The genius of the holy steve jobs shant be questioned

#

In October 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with cancer. In mid 2004, he announced to his employees that he had a cancerous tumor in his pancreas.[161] The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually very poor;[162] Jobs stated that he had a rare, much less aggressive type, known as islet cell neuroendocrine tumor.[161]

#

Despite his diagnosis, Jobs resisted his doctors' recommendations for medical intervention for nine months,[163] instead relying on alternative medicine to thwart the disease. According to Harvard researcher Ramzi Amri, his choice of alternative treatment "led to an unnecessarily early death". Other doctors agree that Jobs's diet was insufficient to address his disease. However, cancer researcher and alternative medicine critic David Gorski wrote that "it's impossible to know whether and by how much he might have decreased his chances of surviving his cancer through his flirtation with woo. My best guess was that Jobs probably only modestly decreased his chances of survival, if that."[164][165] Barrie R. Cassileth, the chief of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's integrative medicine department,[166] said, "Jobs's faith in alternative medicine likely cost him his life.... He had the only kind of pancreatic cancer that is treatable and curable.... He essentially committed suicide."[167] According to Jobs's biographer, Walter Isaacson, "for nine months he refused to undergo surgery for his pancreatic cancer – a decision he later regretted as his health declined".[168] "Instead, he tried a vegan diet, acupuncture, herbal remedies, and other treatments he found online, and even consulted a psychic. He was also influenced by a doctor who ran a clinic that advised juice fasts, bowel cleansings and other unproven approaches, before finally having surgery in July 2004."[169] He eventually underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy (or "Whipple procedure") in July 2004, that appeared to remove the tumor successfully.[170][171] Jobs did not receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy.[161][172] During Jobs's absence, Tim Cook, head of worldwide sales and operations at Apple, ran the company.[161]

In a post from the Freedom Convoy 2022 Facebook page, the organization said the trucking convoy is “anti government mandates,” explaining they oppose any vaccine mandates — not just the one for truckers. That message, however, has become muddied as the movement grows.

One of the groups associated with the event, Canada Unity, has produced a pseudo-legalistic “memorandum of understanding” they plan to present to Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and the Senate, which they mistakenly believe would force the government to rescind COVID-19 public health measures, or force the government to resign en masse.

I can't believe people are seriously arguing that it's a $1k difference.

Hell having to play at 60fps over a month due to my loop dying made me want to gouge out my eyes.

wheat plume

60Hz = smooth but not as responsive feeling in game
120Hz = smooth af but very very responsive in game

serene oxide
#

It happened en masse the day we all moved from CRTs to LCDs with HDMI. We dealt with it just fine, competitive CS didn't suddenly just go down the crapper.

reef patrol
#

CSGO players don't need to apply. They're playing at 800x600 at lowest quality at 300hz anyhow dogekek

I can see a pixel moving!

And somehow, we all managed to even compete in FPS games when literally video cards that could hit 60fps on them were top of the line.

serene oxide

serene oxide
#

The Vega 64 could peak above that as well.

ashen spindle
#

yes it's nothing new but I'm looking at good cards dogekek

#

and even that was rated for just below 300w

#

and the 3090 is also still a thing with 350w

serene oxide
#

with the drivers that fixed the peak consumption issues, I think he ran another article about it about 2w afterward

#

my vid cards were running at 300W rated capacity back in 2012 lol

#

back in that 1.5y period where SLI/crossfire was actually cool and thought to be not an awful idea

#

dual 6870s and that FX chip I mentioned

ashen spindle
#

sure the thing is even thermi used just scratch 300W and after that it went down for a while

#

but not we are going up to 400+

serene oxide
#

oh, I mean rated

#

I'm sure peak was higher

ashen spindle
#

yea, 480 was rated just below 300 iirc

#

but now we might have a 480 again, a 480W TDP rating dogekek

#

would be fitting since it's the rtx 4080

serene oxide
#

transients measurement wasn't really a thing back 10y ago, but I imagine the differences between one 300W-nominal card and another are in a reasonable range when it comes to those <1ms >400W peaks.

ashen spindle
#

probably ye

serene oxide
#

long way around to saying, 1000W was pretty much the top of the top end necessary 10y ago, about the top end necessary 6y ago, about the top 3y ago, and about the top for stuff now -- I'm not sure I see that getting that much farther out of hand 3y from now.

ashen spindle
#

the difference is that we now are getting better solutions that can use that much power without overheating

#

so what wasn't coolable in the past and be used now

#

then we get to add on we are moving towards multi chip gpus

young pecan
#

You’d think so, but we’re having a return to extremely high power components and a return to dual processor components.
On top of that we can actually cool it.

#

More headroom for power usage.

serene oxide
#

While that's true, cooling solutions also improved between, for example, 10y ago and 6y ago

#

and 3, etc -- still didn't see power draw increases.

ashen spindle
#

the coolers on the chip yes but I mean the heat distribution in the chip package itself

young pecan
#

^

#

That has remained about as bad.

serene oxide
#

I mean both as well.

ashen spindle
#

we are getting denser and denser chips and before there was not big need to improve that part as much

young pecan
#

But due to chiplets, a new technology, we can do it now.

serene oxide
#

Then again, I do have a soft spot for the heat spreading on the old P2s... #ancient

young pecan
#

If you can fragment your dense packages over a larger area you can absolutely consume more power.

serene oxide
#

Moore's Law has demonstrated that those gains have been continuous over time. Chip manufacturers have of course always had vested interest in their solutions being more coolable, because that directly maps to the speed they can print on the outside of the box.

ashen spindle
serene oxide
#

I literally won an argument with a Sun VP back in college (at a party I really should have never been allowed into) over that. Moore's Law was dead then too, except it turned out it wasn't. 🙂

ashen spindle
#

though I'm just waiting for the second half of the year so we can see the actual power draw and I really want to see how they try to spin it into something good dogekek

#

maybe jensen will say now he can use his GPU oven and have it powered by other gpus

serene oxide
#

but remember that the 10nm to 7nm die process upgrade Intel did bought them a 12% power draw improvement

serene oxide
#

new advances happen all the time, which is why it's valuable to take a longer historical view of that stuff when trying to guess future trends

#

if it is something that is likely to move, it's likely to have moved before, and vice versa.

ashen spindle
#

ehhh yes thats true but the thing is those power comparisons are usually not made at the high end of powerdraw on those nodes

#

but that all doesn't change that we already know that next gen gpus from both sides are drawing more power

as long as they're made uniformly among the items being compared, there's not necessarily a reason to think that where they're made along the power draw curve will make a difference in the %change. That article you posted didn't look at a particular end either, right?

ashen spindle

sure but that was just to show an example of advanced cooling inside the chips and not an entire node

next gen = rtx 40 series and rdna3

serene oxide
#

gpus, sorry

#

my bad

ashen spindle
#

since we're still on about gpus I thought

#

we're not getting a 400W cpu for consumers soon I hope lol

serene oxide
#

yes, the next step in GPUs is likely a higher power one. But that's what I'm saying -- over the long trend, the ups and the downs balance out. This time, the perf/watt improvements (which they are advertising) are outweighed by the sheer increase in die size. Next time, perhaps not, and the needle goes the other way.

#

Been the trend for an awful long time, over a lot of "but this time it's different"s. So I guess I'm just saying I'm not holding my breath. 🙂

#

I'm expecting to be happy with a 1000W PSU for a good long time.

ashen spindle
#

well they are hitting the reticle limit on team greens side so at least the gen after cant draw more from just having a bigger die

#

OMEGALUL ok found a silverstone strider 1200W titanium for 210€

serene oxide
#

and apparently team red is bragging that the chiplets aren't cooler because they're easier to cool -- they actually consume less power than a comparable monolithic die solution and therefore themselves run cooler. https://wccftech.com/amd-rdna-3-gpus-to-be-more-power-efficient-than-nvidia-ada-lovelace-gpus-navi-31-navi-33-tape-out-later-this-year/

There are new rumors surrounding AMD RDNA 3 'Navi 3X' GPUs that will power the next-generation Radeon RX graphics cards lineup.

#

So while the next power consumption bump is up, I'm guessing the one after is, if not down, at very least neutral.

ashen spindle
#

yes rdna3 will take less power than rtx40 though both will be an increase compared to now

#

but that's just down to first gen product not having years of trials on how to best cool it so they are getting limited by what they can achieve on first run of it

serene oxide
#

yes, because less power per performance but lots more performance.

#

I mean, you could literally say that for every prior architecture release as well 🙂

ashen spindle
#

ehh sure but not to the same degree

#

different uArch is not the same as different packing when it always was just one die you had to cool

#

cooling one chip will always have some similarities vs cooling multiple

serene oxide
#

we've had plenty of different uarchs and different chip packs. They're all baked into Moore.

ashen spindle
#

would you prefer stagnation so even 5 years later you wont get something new?

serene oxide
#

Splitting chip components isn't a new thing.

If I can't physically get a card, it doesn't really matter if it's 2020 or 2025 tech. I can't get it. 😄

ashen spindle
#

that's like complaining about the latest monitor tech costing 10k and you only having 100 to spend on a screen

#

yes you wont have the money for it but you need progress lol

serene oxide
#

AMD's chiplets aren't cool new shit because they're separate. They're cool new shit because they're 3D. That is a big deal.

ashen spindle
#

I am only talking about GPUs still xD

fickle ore
#

Maybe with RDNA3 AMD will finally have drivers that can have HAGS enabled

ashen spindle
#

when did we have a multi chip gpu in the past?

serene oxide
#

The fact that they got stackable chiplets for vcache working is a huge deal.

#

All the earliest consumer GPUs were multi-chip.

#

Hell, it used to be that you couldn't even do 2D and 3D on the same chip. 🙂

ashen spindle
#

ok im talking about chips from after I was born dogekek how much power did those draw though?

serene oxide
#

as with all of these: as much as they possibly could. 🙂

#

Hence the constancy of Moore's.

ashen spindle
#

but how much was that? if it's not in the same ballpark as the coming 400+W I would wager there is much less existing knowledge to build upon compared to power hungry monolithic designs

serene oxide
#

For more recent -- were you born when the Geforce 6 series was out? 🙂

#

there were separate texture processing units and fragment processing units on the NV40 GPUs.

ashen spindle
#

you mean this?

serene oxide
#

This is before they moved to the on-die "processing clusters" methodology.

#

yup, I think the 6600 was an NV40.

#

the 6800s definitely were.

There is not much you can do to conduct electricity better than adding more copper and/or switching to silver.

#

Why not use a thicker conductor and not need to deal with the heat.

Or multiple cables

Which is effectively the same

That doesnt matter, if it can be accessed publically it has to comform to the safety and national guidelines

We don't have any limits on acceleration or even care to legislate that
