#

Article is about Xiaomi phones

#

The image shows a Samsung Galaxy

fair gull
#

so its prob just that samsung has a nice phone to take images of

#

in terms of it showing always on display in big font

wheat plume
#

Xiaomi's one ain't too bad

ashen spindle
#

now look at this and think if it makes more sense to show this than the much bigger samsung version lol

wheat plume
#

True

ashen spindle
#

since it's just for a headline image

wheat plume
#

If I got an aio cooler for the CPU
I assume it would be cooler than the stock fan?

reef patrol
#

Anything is cooler than stock. But a cheaper air cooler might be more efficient than an aio.

wheat plume
#

I've been told the temps my cpu and GPU reach in games in fine....
But I also want to get better fans because the stock ones are loud at idle

#

86C at most

timid chasm
#

you have a lian li mesh something or other don't you?

wheat plume
#

CoolerMaster

#

The entire front panel is mesh

#

And the entire top is a metal grate

timid chasm
#

oh I thought you had one similar to mine

wheat plume
#

No no

timid chasm
#

maybe just built similarly

wheat plume
#

This case is really damn solid

#

All metal

#

Ohh ....

#

Maybe the temps get so high because the front case fan runs at the same speed at all times

#

At idle and in games

#

Since it's only plugged into a power port

timid chasm
#

could be many reasons. Maybe the airflow for your case sucks, maybe your stuff is pointed weird

#

if it's plugged in to power I imagine it's running 100% all the time

wheat plume
#

UEFI or Asus crate can't control it's speed

#

But they can see it's speed

#

They can control the rear fan and cpu cooler

timid chasm
#

do you have a curve set for the cpu cooler then?

#

so it's idle at low temps and faster at high temps

wheat plume
#

Pretty sure I do

#

I can hear that one spin up under load

timid chasm
#

if you set up a fan curve the same program should also show fan rpms

wheat plume
#

Yeah it does

#

I can't control the front fan profile

timid chasm
#

If you want the front fans to act similarly get a splitter and connect them all together if they aren't only molex or something

wheat plume
#

Yeah... Maybe it is only plugged into power because there is no additional controller port

timid chasm
#

assuming you have no more headers that are free

wheat plume
#

Idk if I do or not

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

My friend did the wiring for me

#

I helped put the hardware into the case but I got scared of exploding my computer if I wired it to wrong

timid chasm
#

noctua redux's are cheapish and not that ugly brown

#

yeaah not gonna explode from wiring wrong

wheat plume
#

You can brick some parts though

timid chasm
#

I mean maybe if you force feed some weird psu cables but you have to actually try to royally fuck that up

#

eh

ashen spindle
#

if it's just 12v connection and now pwr pins then they run at max speed anyway so you can't make it go faster anyway

timid chasm
#

sure you can

#

but nobody does without really trying

wheat plume
#

Hmm ...

#

Idk what it's plugged into

timid chasm
#

I guess if you leave your psu plugged into the wall and on and start poking shit something could happen

#

but otherwise good luck fucking it up, imo

ashen spindle
#

look at the cable and then read the manual for the board

wheat plume
#

I'm tempted to ask my friend to help me see if we can plug it into a header that can control it like the other fans if there is one available in the mobo

timid chasm
#

yeah the motherboard manual will tell you everything

#

as will the fans connector

ashen spindle
#

just look at the manual, most likely it's already running at max speed anyway

timid chasm
#

what case is it? You can probably check coolermasters site if it's the defaults

wheat plume
#

I forgot the model name... One sec

ashen spindle
#

case fans wont tell you anything because if they are pwr fans that doesnt matter if they are just getting one voltage

#

so just look at the manual

timid chasm
#

I mean to find out if it even has 4 pins if it's not visibile without opening the case

#

if it's some cheap molex shit then we'll know it's just molex

ashen spindle
#

need to look at the manual anyway to look if it even has any other pwr pins available

wheat plume
#

Cooler Master MasterBox NR400

timid chasm
#

yeah but that's why they make cheap splitters

wheat plume
#

With odd

timid chasm
#

so just 3 pins

#

so now you do what Quintosh said and check your motherboard manual 😛

wheat plume
#

4 is the fan controller headers

#

There seems to be 4 of them

#

Cpu opt
Cpu fan
Cha fan 1
Cha fan 2

ashen spindle
#

3 pin means its not pwm

wheat plume
#

These are all 4 pin?

ashen spindle
#

the fan cable not the connector

wheat plume
#

Ooh

ashen spindle
#

surely those arent even good for mining

timid chasm
#

sounds like they're not good at anything

ashen spindle
#

well must be good at sales if that's how it's going up

timid chasm
#

I don't understand them releasing that gpu. I guess the parts weren't useful as literally anything else?

ashen spindle
#

no it was supposed to only be a laptop chip and makes sense there

#

but they just saw they could make free money

wheat plume
#

Wait....

#

It came with a splitter??

timid chasm
#

molex though so who cares

wheat plume
#

Can't find how many pins the front fan cable has online
I'll have to unplug it to see once I have time

ashen spindle
#

still not quite sure what it is you even want to do

wheat plume
#

If the fan is 4 pin, it's controllable right?
I want to see what header my friend connected it to when we built the computer
And plug it into one of the 4 pin connectors if I can

ashen spindle
#

and then what, turn it down so it moves even less air?

timid chasm
#

some 3 pins are controllable just not the same way

wheat plume
#

The UEFI can't control it

reef tundra
#

You can always control its voltage

#

Atleast I can

wheat plume
#

I want to set it to a slower speed at idle

#

And then let it ramp up when there is load

#

Like the CPU, GPU and rear case fans do

ashen spindle
#

so its about noise and not about cooling it better

timid chasm
#

If your friend used the molex connector then it won't be controllable, afaik

wheat plume
#

Yeah... I'm not sure what he did

#

I should have all the cables in a box anyway, so I can take a look

timid chasm
#

If you have a free header and they used the molex anyway then get a new friend

#

imo

wheat plume
#

Xd

#

We built this is suboptimal conditions

#

On the dining room table

timid chasm
#

that's where I do all my work

wheat plume
#

It's not the best place to build a PC on xd

timid chasm
#

on top of an acrylic sheet 😬

wheat plume
#

Tbf, I did put my computer on my bed yesterday to get more reach in under the GPU so I could disconnect my rgb strip from the Mobo

#

Maybe I shouldn't do that

ashen spindle
#

why not

wheat plume
#

Static discharge.

ashen spindle
#

I mean I always keep it on the floor bc im too lazy to move it anywhere else

#

of what, the outside of the case?

wheat plume
#

I was handling cables inside the case

#

And accidently poked the GPU a few times trying to pull out the cable from the header

ashen spindle
#

I don understand are you also standing on the bed while doing it or what

wheat plume
#

No

ashen spindle
#

you're not getting static electricity from the outside of the case lying on the bed

timid chasm
#

socks on the carpet rubbing them back and forth quickly?

wheat plume
#

No carpet on this floor...
Luckily.... Otherwise I'd have no where to put my computer

timid chasm
#

you can set it on carpet

wheat plume
#

No??

ashen spindle
#

yes

#

unless you are opening the side panel and put it on the carpet with the open side then maybe not the best idea

wheat plume
#

Idk if the PSU fan is intake or exhaust but I do know it faces the ground

timid chasm
#

does the case have feet?

wheat plume
#

Yes but not very high ones

timid chasm
#

otherwise what the actual fuck cooler master

wheat plume
#

I can just about slide my phone under the case

ashen spindle
#

if it has feet it doesnt matter if it doesn then you'd have problems ony any surface and needto flip the psu anyway

timid chasm
#

air is smaller than a phone

wheat plume
#

Yeah

ashen spindle
#

so yeah doesnt matter if its carpet then or not

reef tundra
#

dogekek cant figure out some dc fan

timid chasm
#

marvel lover?

#

dc hater, eh

wheat plume
#

I'm not smart when it's related to electricity like a fan is
I get it needs 12v so I plug it into a 12v motherboard connector but if I want to be able to control it in software I need some other port

reef tundra
#

More voltage -> More rippums

#

untill it smokes up

#

and dies

ashen spindle
#

if it's not a pwr fan you cant use a pwm port to control it, simple as that

reef tundra
#

when you go way over its voltage limit

#

like taking a 5vdc fan and hooking it into the 24vdc

crimson wigeon
#

It's like overclocking your fans

reef tundra
#

It span alright

#

many arcs

#

for about 5 to 10 seconds

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

or you just do what dane did and look on the web what fans they are

reef tundra
#

You can force any motor/fan to work on pwm mm

wheat plume
#

I tried

#

It doesn't give that info anywhere

#

Just the fan size

timid chasm
#

I assume it's coolermaster fan 20031171-gp

ashen spindle
#

thanks

timid chasm
#

that's images I get when googling coolermaster nr400 front fan

wheat plume
#

These are RGB

#

It's not these fans

timid chasm
#

2000311410GP maybe then

ashen spindle
#

those fans arent even the one he named so yeah ofc it's not those??

timid chasm
#

This is from gnd-tech but it's not with ODD. I wouldn't think that would matter but maybe variations

#

The fan uses a standard 3-pin power connector. The preinstalled fan at the front of the case (2000311410GP) appears to be a bit higher quality and features a 9-blade design and is rated for 1200 RPMs at 0.16A. At maximum power, this fan should be almost silent.

wheat plume
#

It's definitely not silent

timid chasm
#

maybe your bearings suck

wheat plume
#

Idk

#

The model number in the photo doesn't match the quote

#

I just looked at the fan in mine
It matches the photo model number

reef tundra
#

There should be a model number on the face of the fan

fair gull
#

ez fix dont use coolermaster fans

reef tundra

nice sticker

#

or even engraved if they went fancy

fair gull

buy nice and expensive noctuas

wheat plume

CoolerMaster 200031171-GP

reef tundra
#

!google !!

ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

Yeah
They are 3 pin

#

Can't control it's speed then

fair gull
#

yes u can

#

most motherboards i know of let u use dc mode to control 3pin fans on a 4pin header

timid chasm
#

to the bios!

ashen spindle
#

not in form of using a curve though and only set values

#

so not useable unless you restart the pc before you go from idle to heavy tasks lmao

young pecan
#

Just run it at 100% all the time. WeSmart

fair gull
#

weird my asus board gives me a curve in dc and pwm mode

ashen spindle
#

hm what board is it?

wheat plume
fair gull
#

ngl idk it was one of the better omes 3 yrs ago

ashen spindle
#

maybe the newer once are a bit fancier and have sperate regulators for that

fair gull
ashen spindle
#

definitely doesnt sounds like a feature for budget board then

wheat plume
fair gull
#

oh no the mobo was a few hundred quid iirc

reef tundra
young pecan
#

Hmmm.

timid chasm
#

I thought mine did too but I know I definitely swapped all mine out to 4 pins at some point

#

a bit late on which fan it is

young pecan
#

Wonder is the Steel Legends board has it. That's prolly one of the best 'budget' high ends out there.

reef tundra
#

The white cable will be the enable/speedcontrol

#

Just make sure not to connect the white one to the 12v or GND

fair gull
#

only to 240v

wheat plume
#

mine does not have a white cable

timid chasm
#

usually the plastic prevents that

reef tundra
#

If you reverse polarity of the two power cables it will just spin the other way

timid chasm
#

moorv

wheat plume
timid chasm
#

wonder why it's so loud

wheat plume

fyi careful searching blow in the gifs. It's mostly NOT that^

reef tundra

Disconnect the fans if you clean them

wheat plume

I will asks my friends if they might and hope it wont rain tomorrow to blow the dust out

reef tundra

they become generators when being spun

wheat plume

ashen spindle

no need to put it outside with a cloth either

halcyon moss

PYTHON DOES CARE

wheat plume

Python doesnt care?

Ive used tabs and its fine

halcyon moss

you better not be fucking mixing tabs and spaces in a file

wheat plume

oh

#

mixing

#

I dont do that

reef tundra
#

Make will care

halcyon moss
#

anyway, the mighty pep8 says use 4 spaces as indents

wheat plume
#

yeah, a lot of markdown / json type languages care

halcyon moss
#

and so we all use 4 spaces

wheat plume
#

2 space indent isnt very easy for me to read if its a large file of code

halcyon moss
#

i prefer 4, but js seem to have settled on 2

reef tundra
#

I let vim figure it out. I tell it what the formatting rules are and off it goes

wheat plume
#

Oh, you can even change it on the fly inside the editor window, no need to go into the settings, NEAT

Im perfectly ok with the stock editor in both gnome and plasma

halcyon moss

ive never had it break on me in YEARS

fair gull

space indentation lol

tabs are superior

wheat plume

o.o it seems my specific wifi / bluetooth card is vulnerable to a bluetooth exploit .-.

ashen spindle

reef tundra

Tab enjoyer

fair gull

tabs are better cause they can be whatever width

#

be ot 1 space, 2, 4 or 273

crimson wigeon
#

Tabs are the way to go

#

Easier to work with, and you save a few precious bytes too!

fair gull

plus as i said everyone can set it to their prefered indentation amount in spaces

halcyon moss
#

precious lol.

reef tundra
#

You could douse your pc in petrol too..
why do fires mysteriously occur with me around

halcyon moss
#

it breaks if you use tabs to indent to format though

#

which.. almost every toold does

reef tundra
#

Run your code formatter to enforce whatever formating you have to

wheat plume
#

Ah yes, the phone that comes built in with a long term bankruptcy feature!

fair gull
#

my formatter doesnt break

wheat plume
#

TIL some laptops do not have a CMOS battery

#

Then how are BIOS settings stored?

reef patrol
#

On a chip that doesn't rely on electricity to store settings.

halcyon moss
#

i cant imagine not having that on :p

wheat plume
#

two chips, interesting

pallid totem
ashen spindle
#

now I do want to see some m2 nvmes with a cmos on them

reef tundra
#

Either in some ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM, flash or similiar option. Likely EEPROM or flash memory

#

CMOS battery is mostly for keeping the RTC running so the time stays ticking even on poweroff

#

Nowadays we have solutions like the internet to do that for us

pallid totem
ashen spindle
#

because it would look stupidly funny dogekek

#

just thinking about having a battery bigger than the silly stick it would be on looks funny in my head lmao

pallid totem
#

The battery is just a battery. It's called a CMOS battery because it powers a CMOS based circuit, in this case a CMOS memory circuit. CMOS is a type of low-resistive load electric circuit design. 😉

fair gull
reef tundra
#

thonk Also CMOS retains its state so long as there is a charge left on the gate. Need to have some discharge circuit or leakage current to remove that charge. Thus the conductivity of the transistor. Even static charges can make em conduct current

pallid totem
#

Most modern laptops don't have it stored in NVRAM at all, they store it in EFI partitions.

#

But yes, as someone else mentioned, RTC is still a thing.

#

(And they likely run it off the main battery, with a chonky capacitor to keep it going for a while if you yeet it)

reef patrol
pallid totem
#

Ah yeah, some also store in SPI Flash.

#

(I'm looking at you, AMI)

reef tundra

SPI is just a communication protocol?

pallid totem

There. Brain derailed. 😛

pallid totem
# astral haven It's very common to just call it spi

From the context I was speaking in, I was expecting SPI to be sufficient to qualify what I was referring to, but clarifying never hurts. And SPI is used in more ways these days than just flash or multiplexing. So it was a fair cop.

reef tundra
# pallid totem That doesn't mean you're not screwed if Paypal goes tits up suddenly one day tho...

The Dutch Government has put in place a mechanism that essentially guarantees the account holders will at least receive their lost savings up to 100 000eur per account holder per bank. Anything above that is lost, but you would at least be guaranteed to get your savings back that was still on your account. With PayPal I don't see them insured through this method or any method. Once they declare bankruptcy money goes bye bye.

#

Then why does it hold money?

#

So it is an loan?

misty saffron
#

i would tell you that as per russian law everything that functions like a bank must be a bank

#

but paypal isn’t russian

reef tundra
#

Which they can default on with 0 consequences mm
Just like a medieval king would with the Jewish Bankers.

pallid totem
reef tundra
#

So what value does paypal add to the whole transaction? more costs?

reef patrol
#

What's a cheque? We haven't had those for decades xD

pallid totem
# reef tundra So what value does paypal add to the whole transaction? more costs?

Paypal's a payment processor, first and foremost. They enable you to charge money for a service or receive a donation without having to establish a merchant account with major credit card providers. Back when paypal started, there were precious few payment processors that didn't require you to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to accept payments.

misty saffron
#

i still don’t entirely understand why the fuck instant card to card transfers aren’t a thing in europe

young pecan
#

Lmfao what class was this?

misty saffron
#

EVERYONE uses those in russia

misty saffron
#

definitely not everywhere in europe

young pecan
#

About 5 seconds from any bank card to any other bank card.

pallid totem
#

Sweden has them too. I can't speak to the rest of Europe.

misty saffron
#

ask a german, they’re still in the stone age

reef patrol
#

Well that's Germany in a nutshell.

pallid totem
#

Germany barely has contactless.

reef patrol
#

They still prefer paper money to cards. That's how backwards they are.

young pecan
#

Bruh, what even? I mean props for information density, but who uses those anymore?

misty saffron
#

at one point i spent 30 minutes convincing a german i can send money just by knowing the card number

reef patrol
#

Can't do that here - Cause you should never fucking know someone's card number. You know their european bank account number, or a phonenumber tied to such.

young pecan
#

PayID is nut.

misty saffron
#

you shouldn’t know someone’s card expiry date and security code

#

russians had no problems with sharing the card number

reef patrol
#

Or the card number.

#

🤣

misty saffron
#

to be fair though the antifraud systems are much more advanced here

reef tundra
young pecan
#

Wym? It’s just the hardest part to guess. Pepega

misty saffron
#

actually it’s not

reef patrol
#

Look - Having a talking bear coming to your house to maul you is NOT anti fraud.

young pecan
#

Factually it will be? I don’t see a way to guess the card number faster than you can guess the expiry and pin.

pallid totem
# reef tundra Like mastercard, ideal, afterpay or visa offer?

If you want to process Mastercard or VISA payments yourself, you must be a legal entity, be PCI compliant, sign contracts and pay rather high transaction fees. That's what most people would like to avoid. And thus why Paypal got its popularity so fast.

misty saffron
#

nothing stops you from bruteforcing the card number

#

everything stops you from bruteforcing the expiry date and cvv

young pecan
#

1 to 999 for the pin, all year/month combos within 4 years of the card expiry, that’s a LOT easier to do than the card number.

misty saffron
#

yes, good luck with having more than 10 attempts though

young pecan
#

You’d be amazed. LUL

pallid totem
#

Yes, MC/VISA/other card providers have created easier solutions in the last handful of years, but they are still not easy to implement. But there are more competing payment providers now, such as Stripe.

misty saffron
#

no, i definitely won’t be

#

it’s obvious a card is being bruteforced

young pecan
#

Oh it is.

misty saffron
#

because, you know, you have the card number

young pecan
#

I mean you’d be surprised how inept some banks can be.

#

Some backends literally just let you attempt guessing forever. No checks.

reef tundra
#

The cardnumber is actually self referential. So you can determine if it even is even a valid number

misty saffron
#

when i said russian banks are on crack i meant it

#

i’ve had a transaction get blocked where i tried to send money to a different card of mine

#

same cardholder name and everything

#

instantly got a call from 900 asking “wyd”

old marlin

May have changed in the past couple of years. I was there pre-Covid, after all. But there was certainly a lot of places cash was king and card more hit and miss.

old marlin
#

ah

#

well

reef tundra
#

The new pinautomaten should work with NFC nowadays so it can also work with mobile payments

old marlin

shops are forced to give you a receipt nowadays

#

didn't use to be the case

so a lot of bakeries etc just got card terminals that also print receipts

Cash still is super popular though

reef tundra

In the netherlands you get them offered but most people refuse or just trash them

#

receipts i mean

old marlin
#

Same

#

A lot of supermarkets used to gove you a choice

#

Now they must print them

reef patrol
#

Can't refuse them here - You want a receipt of what you bought, you get an added receipt for the card transaction.

reef tundra

Only real reason to get the receipt is for sending it to your employer to reimburse you for

Or you know... keep a basic groceries budget.

pallid totem

ashen spindle

it is way over 10x as fast though

is that a UE4 thing? because I have bigger UE3 games that also dont have it

Any .PAK based UE game. UE3 doesn't have to use PAK files, no.

Dead by Daylight: 99 PAK files, totalling 54.03 GiB.

Hopefully it's just those built-in car audio systems

fair gull
#

so can anyone explain to a normie like me why web3 emails are supposedly better

pallid totem

Well, that would depend? Web3 is more an umbrella term for upcoming web technologies, so it would come down to how whatever email provider/software is being made aimed towards the 'platform' is providing.

crimson wigeon
#

Blockchain

pallid totem
#

But given the basis of blockchain and cryptographic security web3 is underpinned with, it'd likely be verifiable identity of sender and distributed... distribution that would be parts of it that is actually desirable.

#

Not that we can't already do this with regular email, mind you.

young pecan
#

I think the thing about web3 is that it becomes normal.

#

You can do it with currently deployed tech, it's just that nobody does.

fair gull

how does blockchain guarantee the identity of the sender

#

as far as i understand ur credentials can still be stolen

young pecan
#

It guarantees it if you're smart and don't give away your private key.

But there's some funky shit you can do to guarantee it.

#

Like binding it to accounts and multifactor.

fair gull

doesnt account mean centralization?

shadow minnow
wheat plume
#

oh, so if im not doing water cooling or AIO then I dont need to care about that?

ashen spindle
#

lower models make less profit so it makes even more sense there

shadow minnow
#

Just saying that lower models are really over what they should be.
While 3080 is already higher end and pretty good value so the change doesn’t matter as much imo.
As with lower ends ones.
Since with budget cards you really care about budget

ashen spindle
#

but at msrp those cards are a improvement over previous gen in relative pricing

#

lack of entry option isn't a reason to have a more expensive mid range card become cheaper just so there is a cheaper model

shadow minnow
#

Sure but compared to 9– series same models pretty expensive.
Though better solution would be if they just released more lower end models probably

crisp granite

the xx40, xx30 and xx10 series?

#

those were basically display adaptors for basic PCs

ashen spindle

"same models" but naming doesnt really mean anything

reef patrol
#

Static pressure is all about being mounted to something that obstructs - like a radiator or a thick dust filter.

#

Airflow is all about blowing air around in an empty void. Typically fans are either marketed as one or the other for mounting on radiators or somewhere like the back of the case as exhaust where there's nothing to require more pressure.

solar hinge
reef patrol
#

I assume it's down to the shape of the fan blades and the frame? And of course the motor inside.

pallid totem
#

(Also probably helped by me adding more exhaust fans and thus lowering pressure inside the case, it's a relatively tight case with few places for free airflow into it.)

Hard to say if they're AMAZING RAM based on that information. BUT - For gaming it doesn't REALLY matter. We might talk 1-5FPS difference at most to amazing RAM sticks.

Chances are if they some day need 32GB they just buy 2x16 themselves. Or go straight to DDR5 and need new RAM at that point any way.
