For me, direct extruder setup brings more benefits compared to Bowden setup. Namely the higher temperature the hotend can be, able to grip flexible filaments and less oozing. But the more mass your hotend weighs, the less acceleration it can achieve. Thus making higher speeds less ideal compared to bowden setups

highly recommend you dont use stock. from all my reseaRch its old af marlin and doesnt even have thermal runaway protection

its the main reason i switched to the mriscoc custom one cause its just better

To my knowledge Ender's always came with thermal protection. But you're definitely right that it's old and should be upgraded. I personally prefer running Klipper over marlin due to ease of configuration and performance I get from a old 8bit board
