im not saying they should do it

Well I'm looking forward to the removal because it means they'll make the campaign free for a bit how generous! Finally a reason to reinstall that game..

im still annoyed about the last vaulting

for me, someone who hasn't played D2 and would likely be lost without it, as well as those who actually paid for it, it would suck

So much for having control of your settings and all that. Thanks Googol

halcyon moss

how does it even do that?

I... I don't know.

Media volume is at zero. The app has no audio settings. But every time I hit a number key to type in a PIN, it goes CLICK

halcyon moss

does it use the keyboard volume settings? :p

No idea. Nothing - NOTHING on my phone can make sound normally.

If I do this update, my PC will boot into a blank screen.....

#

Cause of the Nvidia driver update and the lack of a Linux kernel update also

halcyon moss

lol arch

#

wy would it though?

wheat plume
#

Because the drivers are built against the newest kernel or something similar, so the headers must match

halcyon moss

arent they build at install time?

and rebuild on kernel update?

wheat plume
#

yeah, built towards a specific kernel version iirc

halcyon moss

i thought thats what the building was for.

ashen spindle

no that's just because linux people want you to build things for no reason pepeLaughter

wheat plume

idk the reason anymore, but I know they need to be updated together

so m1 macbook with linux or normal intel/amd laptop with linux

empty wren
crisp granite

because they're actually really damn good value for money, as far as laptops go

ashen spindle
#

m1 if you have lots of money, wait for alder lake laptops if you don't need one right now, amd laptop if you need one now and don't have insane money to splurge on apple tax

crisp granite
#

M1 macs aren't that expensive considering what you get

ashen spindle
#

if you are fine with minimum spec on ram and storage and all I guess

crisp granite
#

8 gigs of ram is fine for macOS or linux

#

256 gigs is plenty for most users

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

not like that extra GPU core matters either

ashen spindle
#

wasn't even talking about gpu

#

but I'd be only fine with 8gigs if I would use it for like literally nothing but writing and emails

crisp granite
#

I know, but that's one of the upgrades that could bump up the price

crisp granite
#

if you need horsepower, you likely have a desktop that kicks ass

ashen spindle
#

sure but in that case I can do the same with something that cost like 200$

crisp granite
#

that'll have the build of a wet diaper and a screen that probably is better suited for use as TP than a screen

reef patrol
#

This is seriously cool. I wish I had the dosh for one. 😄

fair gull

altho i might go 16 just to be safe and ssd space isnt all too important cause github

i mainly would run.vscode

shadow minnow
#

M1 is cool. I would say if you only need 8gb ram, if it’s in your price range and you would benefit from long battery life it’s at least interesting choice

shadow minnow
shadow minnow
# fair gull and maybe 1 or 2 tabs in ff

For that tbf, maybe if you find some cheaper non M1 laptop. Since I don’t think you would need that much performance and idk about battery life. If you need it and can spend money, probably M1, but otherwise it may not have enough benefits unless you also need some performance

chrome estuary
#

I'd prefer the 16gb for the m1. I have an M1 MBA 8gb

shadow minnow
#

I have M1 pro. It’s interesting. Performance is great, even if some games could use M1 max, for some would be useless.
But also, the fact that performance on low battery mode with battery is same as when plugged in, unless you have both cpu and GPU task (just GPU even if 100% is not an issue)

fair gull
#

an m1 macbook can prob last me like 10yrs for the coding i do

shadow minnow
#

That’s true if you want it long term tbh

fair gull
#

thats the goal

shadow minnow
#

I have had good experience with MacBooks lasting myself

fair gull
#

always go as long term as possible

shadow minnow
#

So for that it may be worth it

fair gull
#

if i need more compute AWS got me covered

shadow minnow
#

M1 may be worth it then. I would say M1 MacBook Air with as much rum and storage as you need (unless it’s “too much”)

fair gull
#

the air only has 8gb ram options

#

the pro has more

#

but thats 1.4k plus aswell

#

ill prob just go for the smallest air

#

cause both macos and debian dont use much ram or cpu themselves

shadow minnow
#

Smallest air is a pretty good value imo

ashen spindle
fair gull
#

insane repair costs lol

#

i forgot about those

#

but tbf

#

most other laptops have a similar problem if the mobo is trashed

shadow minnow
#

But M1 does have some compatibility later stuff where it does not support everything from older OpenGLs, but same apparently is true for some Linux distros

shadow minnow
# fair gull insane repair costs lol

Well, if you get lucky you may not need it, or nearly as often. But otherwise it could be bad. Still unless you break it early dogekek prices should go a bit down for repairs later on

#

Fact that makes me kinda regret my decisions atm is that M1 pro MacBook i have for now is better in every way compared to my pc apart from storage capacity. Tbf it does not support all apps but even display is better than my pretty expensive display, apart from maybe pixel switching time

fair gull
#

linux 5.13 is the first kernel that supports m1 silicon

#

apparently not all too much is implemented yet tho

shadow minnow
#

Pretty sure parallels also has some Linux stuff supporting it but not sure what all

fair gull
#

ya no if anything bare metal

#

if i want vms i could just get any laptop and ruin my perf

shadow minnow
#

But also metal seems to have some advantages if done well compared to OpenGL. At least on 2017 MacBook Pro, it ran way better, like almost two times with war thunder through metal

fair gull
ashen spindle
#

that's not what he meant with "bare metal" lol

#

also opengl is kinda dead since like 4 years, you'd kinda hope it doesnt perform better

shadow minnow
fair gull

opengl got superseeded by vulcan

Why is file explorer on windows so slow? I mean, considering speed of my ssd, it sometimes takes windows as long as if it was reading every single bit on the ssd to find files, as if it had no directory or sth with just file names and links to said files.

reef tundra
#

The metadata written within the file, implemented in Vista, is also utilized in Windows 7. This can sometimes lead to long wait times displaying the contents of a folder. For example, if a folder contains many large video files totaling hundreds of gigabytes, and the Window Explorer pane is in Details view mode showing a property contained within the metadata (for example Date, Length, Frame Height), Windows Explorer might have to search the contents of the whole file for the meta data. Some damaged files can cause a prolonged delay as well. This is due to metadata information being able to be placed anywhere within the file, beginning, middle, or end, necessitating a search of the whole file. Lengthy delays also occur when displaying the contents of a folder with many different types of program icons. The icon is contained in the metadata. Some programs cause the activation of a virus scan when retrieving the icon information from the metadata, hence producing a lengthy delay.[29]

shadow minnow
#

Why can’t it first load files matching your research, and only then go on to do this stuff so you both see what you are searching for faster, and so it doesn’t go through every file even though most of them don’t match the things?

#

Like I searched for one thing. Got two results in total after over 2 minutes. Under 10mb combined. So no idea what took it so long, unless it went through metadata of every single file to then only show 2.
It’s not like there were any videos so stuff like that either, mostly just apps

My guess is legacy bloat and lack of need to improve the thing.

I'm seriously tempted to snag a gaming laptop. Sure i've got a pretty badass desktop but I want it for when I'm heading up to my buddy's place and some other reasons but the issue is they're fairly expensive and it would be rarely used.

#

but god damn the MSI Stealth 15M is pretty

chrome estuary

here's the thing

#

they're not out yet

wheat plume

True ;-;

chrome estuary

plus i wouldn't be able to get one until late next year probably

#

I want something for new years.

wheat plume
#

I must look up that laptop now

#

I dont like the speaker grill design xd but the rest is real slick!

chrome estuary
#

with amazon, i can get it for 280/m for 5 months

wheat plume
#

hmmm

chrome estuary
#

i mean i really really don't need this

wheat plume
#

144Hz with a 1660TI

#

most games wont run that fast

chrome estuary
#

i don't think we're looking at the same laptop

mine showed a 144hz with a 3060

the 15M has multiple versions it seems

chrome estuary

i'd only consider it because of amazon's monthly payments

i'm not sure if it's a prime only thing or what

wheat plume

hmmmm??? why the price difference?

two different things, cost two different amount of moeny

they're different chassis, different models, etc.

ashen spindle

what is so weird about that

chrome estuary
#

ugh shit i can get the gf65 for monthly payments too and it would be like 40$/m less.

wheat plume
#

it seems the only spec difference is the CPU

#

so if you need the extra power then go for the Stealth

#

Maybe the batteries are different sizes too, idk

cursive summit

Stealth chassis is completely different

A lot thinner

More engineering costs

wheat plume

yes

You're looking for a laptop with a 3060?

#

There's one of the ASUS TUFs with a 3060 afaik for cheaper

chrome estuary

not really

#

also i saw it, it's not got monthly payments

#

total cost to a point isn't my problem. I can afford it either way but I'd rather not dump out a grand at once

cursive summit
#

Loan?

#

Dell offers payment options iirc

chrome estuary
#

nope. Amazon has this 5 monthly payments thing. Fairly useful and i've done it before on things.

cursive summit
#

Dell has this financing thing where they allow you to pay off a thing within 6 months for no additional costs

#

Just if you get a Dell, reinstall the BIOS and OS to get rid of bloatware lul

wheat plume
#

nope, my last laptop is Dell and the audio drivers autoinstall Dell's WaveProMax software and makes the headphone jack not work .-.

it doesn't have to be at ultra max high fuckin 1080hz extreme fidelity vr level

chrome estuary
#

y'know i could do an eGPU and just pop out my 3070ti if i could find a caddy that would support it

wheat plume
#

If you buy a better GPU for your computer and its the same brand as the current one, do you need to purge the drivers and reinstall them or can you just pop the new GPU in and itll be good?

#

Like if you had a nvidia GPU and you buy a better nvidia GPU

#

or the same for AMD

ashen spindle
#

think about it for a second

#

do you install a 1660 ti driver or an nvidia driver

chrome estuary

wheat plume

the nvidia website asks you for the specific GPU details

#

I got to tell it I have a 1660

you really don't need to give it

unless you have some really old fuckin gpu or a quadro or something

wheat plume

ashen spindle

nah 4 isn't out till end of 22

and unlike 4 you dont need a new board for 3d

cursive summit
#

Main thing about the CPUs nowadays, is that you get like what, 20% uplift gen to gen?

#

GPUs tend to have a lot more than that, and it's quite unlikely you'll bottleneck a modern CPU at all to be fair

#

8C/16T is plenty fast so if you need a rig just get it now to be fair

chrome estuary

that's why i skipped 3rd gen zen or whatever it's called

Ehh I don't think Raptor Lake will drop DDR4 support

we know rdna3 is going to be multi chip gpus

and they will still be pcie cards, and the way those are made is limiting the ammount of heat you can transfwer from such a socket

so when nvidia can go Thermi 2.0, amd physically could not do that

Cause I haven't done much research there

USB-C GPUs? lul

cursive summit

Well at some point we'll advance to a more "lossless" solution

ashen spindle
#

why

cursive summit
#

"the way those are made is limiting the amount of heat you can transfer from such a socket"

#

That sounds like a drawback at some point we might move to a different transfer interface to replace

ashen spindle
#

bruh we are talking about home pc format not cloud vendors putting server racks under liquid cooling for the entire chassis

cursive summit
#

Infinite power lul

chrome estuary

so i'm debating between that G15 from dell or the m15 from MSI
the msi comes with an i7-11375h (4c8t)
the dell comes with an i7-11800h (8c16t)

both are rtx 3060s

dell comes with a 1tb m.2
MSI comes with a 512 m.2

i hate to put looks into something like this but i love the look of the msi stealth compared to the dell.

i just wish dell wasn't cancelling this deal in 17 fucking hours

#

Man people undervalue the importance of TB, I can't buy a laptop without TB

chrome estuary

well never mind i can't finance the fucking thing

because dell's financial services are either completely fucking useless or something went wrong

cursive summit

I'd consider myself a representative of the new generation, and I despise using my phone for anything other than basic functions lul

Internet, youtube etc is phenomenal, but that's where that ends

such info very private

fair gull

in general false whois usually voids the domain should it be reported as the registrars usually have contracts stating it has to be your actual info

reef tundra
fair gull
#

most registrars have to block it due to gdpr so the "whois guard" they usually included it by default

fair gull
#

if you do it intentionally due to criminal activity on the site

#

yes it could lead to bigger charges

#

if you just do it cause u didnt know that since years its very hard to obtain actual whois data from most registrars u might get away with losing the domain name

ngl the internet is in a strange state

not just stuck between ipv4 and ipv6

#

but also domains and ips are in a weird spot

what info to make public and what shouldnt

theres valid reasons for public whois but also a lot against it
