At least I don't use Gentoo on my my VPS. I met someone that did that and asked why they did it, they said "Gentoo is the best distribution" at which point I stopped talking to them.

reef tundra
#

You see, the compiler is going brr

vagrant elk
#

That reminds me of a movie where they had a hacking scene and, I wish I was joking, the hacker typed sudo pacman -Syu.

#

No editing or anything. It was just a Linux update to show "hacking".

reef tundra
#

should have typed yay

vagrant elk
#

Okay some products are just getting stupid. I just got a Brave ad for "Heatbit", an electric heater than mines Bitcoin.

crisp granite
#

that is the stupidest pitch I ever heard

vagrant elk
#

No, Doge, you don't understand. The advertisement says it makes me money by having it on!

#

I could imagine the heater just being 10 Bitcoin miners crammed into a tiny plastic shell and like 12 power cords.

#

I know that isn't the product though, the price would be far too high.

reef tundra
#

Technically electric heaters are 100% efficient mm

iron wave
#

Yes.

#

Also my parents think they are over unity for some reason.

vagrant elk
#

I wish I was lying but when I read the brand name "Heatbit" I thought it was a Fitbit with a heater built-in to keep your wrist warm.

reef tundra
#

pepesweat Energy production and transportation is where the losses hide

iron wave
#

Like one that is huge and draws 1KW will produce more heat than a small one that draws 1KW and those both produce more heat than a computer that draws 1KW.

#

That's what they think.

#

So in the winter when I run F@H they yell at me for wasting power.

vagrant elk
#

My PinePhone is being weird. It says duckduckgo.com doesn't work but resolves ecosia.org.

reef tundra
reef tundra
#

Everyone getting solar panels helps to lower that transportation losses atleast

iron wave
#

My parents think they are full of cadmium and lead and will rip the roof off if it's windy.

#

:-D

vagrant elk
#

Nope, my PinePhone doesn't register duckduckgo.com as existing.

#

I mean, my PinePhone does but not inside of WayDroid which is a virtualised Android.

iron wave
#

I've never heard of that, got a link?

vagrant elk
#

Have you heard of Anbox? If so it's just a newer version of Anbox that works more like WINE. It translates Android system calls to something Linux can understand and virtualises everything like that. It's like having an Android phone inside of Linux.

iron wave
#

Android is Linux.

vagrant elk
#

Android is a fork of Linux. That's like saying MacOS is BSD.

iron wave
#

But yeah, I don't like that one if it's what I'm thinking of.

reef tundra
#

Why would they bother if cadmium and lead make them unsellable in the EU under RoHS. Especially you can make them without it

iron wave
#

They run the Linux kernel.

vagrant elk
iron wave
#

Anbox is the one where you need the kernel modules right?

vagrant elk
#

WayDroid requires them as well.

iron wave
#

Oh that's lame.

vagrant elk
#

Most Linux distributions for the PinePhone don't have it through what I have tested so I stick to Arch Linux since it has them not only included but enabled by default.

alienware?

wheat plume

Yep

Meant to run steamOS but valve delayed it so they sent it out with windows

#

Tossed in an Xbox controller also

#

And some games that played well with the case lights

vagrant elk
#

Is that a mini ATX or micro ATX PC?

#

That thing is so tiny it's adorable.

wheat plume
#

Pretty sure its all custom

#

at least the mobo and the GPU

#

the CPU is a standard laptop one

pale sigil

vagrant elk
#

Still an interesting little PC!

wheat plume
#

Yeah, my friend is setting up proxmox

#

Hes got it installed already

wheat plume
vagrant elk
#

Oh, it just uses a mobile platform GPU, neat! Kind of expected with a small form factor but those things are still really good!

wheat plume
#

This is much smaller than small form factor xd

#

my new fucking computer is considered SFF ffs xd

#

and this thing aint small

pale sigil
#

turn it into a nas

vagrant elk
#

Then attach a NAS to the NAS.

wheat plume
#

I'll try to find a photo of my other one

vagrant elk

I've actually seen people do that where they chain multiple NAS('s?) together and then one drive in the one they are connected to is actually like 18 drives or something stupid.

Amazon confirms retail packaging design for Alder Lake CPUs Dutch Amazon has started listing 12th Gen Core Intel CPUs. The flagship 16-core CPU named Core i9-12900K is now listed at 847 EUR with 21% VAT.  A Core i7-12700K model is now offered for 641 EUR while Core i5-12600K has a price tag of 324 EUR. […]

vagrant elk
#

I wonder if the 12900k will out-perform the 11900k which was a "complete waste of sand" as Gamers Nexus put it.

ashen spindle
#

ofc it will

shadow minnow
wheat plume
#

Found some photos of it

vagrant elk
#

I mean, the 11900k was worse than the 10900k in a lot of cases and better in others, it was trading blows with its previous generation. I don't know what to expect from Intel until they can start doing stuff with a smaller process, 14nm is near its limits or at least is being pushed to limits that are kind of crazy for the platform.

wheat plume
#

shown next to an SSD box for sort of a size comparison

ashen spindle
#

well yeah because it was a backport to 14nm

#

alder lake is not 14nm

vagrant elk
#

Fair enough. The 12900k is on a new node process right?

ashen spindle
#

yes

vagrant elk
#

Like, for real this time, we're actually passed 14nm?

ashen spindle
#

yes

vagrant elk
#

In that case, I'm kind of excited to see what Intel has made. It's about time!

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

Intel... not on 14nm?!! What a wonderful world!!!

shadow minnow
#

New mode may be around 7nm level but can’t say for sure, also since we don’t know which exactly mode is it gonna be. Should be better than TSMC 10nm but how good exactly is it gonna be, we don’t know.

wheat plume
# vagrant elk That thing is adorably tiny.

the case + cooling is a majority of it's size actually

The black plastic is just the outer part and the computer is inside a metal frame and the whle thing is basically a single board with a 2.5 inch drive bay on the underside

ashen spindle
#

except we have chips from it already so we do know how it does rooDerp1

vagrant elk
#

I don't know why but seeing small computers makes me happy.

#

Seeing large computers also makes me happy. You know, the giant behemoths that are used for custom water cooling loops and such.

wheat plume
#

it is very adorable indeed!

vagrant elk
#

I think my next build if I were to do one will be a small form factor.

wheat plume
#

Im still shocked my new computer is considered SFF

#

cause its fucking massive compared to my old one LOL

shadow minnow
#

Wish you could just make and order (small quantity of) a custom small fan radiator to use it with Mitx mobo in possibly custom mitx case, would be cool.

vagrant elk
#

I forget where it cuts off. 14 litre cases are small form factor for many many people.

#

I think small form factor is misleading because a lot of people take it as "smaller than my giant behemoth" which is quite easy to beat.

wheat plume
#

My friend's case is shorted than mine

#

but a lot wider

#

and his is considered the next size up compared to mine

vagrant elk
#

I've seen some that are extremely small in terms of width and height but then are tall to make everything fit.

shadow minnow
#

My, well, first case apparently has 56l volume lul

wheat plume
#

wow

shadow minnow
#

And it’s not even that big compared to some

vagrant elk
#

Mine is far from small form factor, about as far from it as you can get. The O11D-XL is quite large.

shadow minnow
#

Two thick 360 rads and pump reservoir combo already make it basically full, apart from mobo space. Add GPU and it would seem small

wheat plume
#

never would have guessed that from the name!!

vagrant elk
#

I'm just dumb and type faster than my brain thinks so I often type things that are obvious.

wheat plume
#

is pretty

vagrant elk
#

Imagine that but with no tubing, no water cooling, no RGB. Just a black abyss. That's my PC.

wheat plume
#

oh, this is one of the cases where the mobo is wider than the plate its on so you need a support thing

shadow minnow
#

Like, this already makes it look so small, not a lot of space left

wheat plume
#

Gurl... you wanna talk about black abyss?

#

My computer

#

the only light in the case is the GPU power indicator led

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

ooohhh

shadow minnow

shadow minnow

vagrant elk

The only light in my PC is the white LED for the motherboard start button.

wheat plume

Do you have lighting options in your BIOS? Mine were buried under I think it was the F9 menu with no other way to access it. Took me quite a while to notice it was there.

ashen spindle

go to your boards website and look in the manual to see how to disable it

vagrant elk
#

I do get motherboard error codes while it's booting though so if it ever has an error I know what caused it.

Once it's booted they turn off.

Imagine having an inferior data transfer speed with your proprietary connector so you use USB-C on all your devices but are hanging on for your life with the last device that has it, your phones. Meanwhile the EU is knocking on your door requiring everything to be USB-C so even if you tried to revive it and make it better you can't.

shadow minnow
# wheat plume I fucking HOPE that law passes

It’s bad as a law imo tbh, since it’s kinda thing that countries or EU should not have control over even if it’s better, since it’s not really gonna reduce waste or anything. Also I kinda wish iPhones would go portless tbh.

wheat plume
#

portless

#

wtf no

#

ok, at least a charging port cause fuck wireless charging

shadow minnow
#

I don’t use the port basically at all

vagrant elk
#

Definitely not port-less. Never.

wheat plume
#

Wireless charging overheats the phone like crazy

shadow minnow
#

And rather more battery and Apple Watch level waterproofness for me tbh

vagrant elk
#

I need that for transferring data quite consistently across my devices.

wheat plume
#

KDE Connect

#

<3

#

can send shit wirelessly from computer and phone

vagrant elk
#

I can't use KDE Connect with the Cosmic desktop environment that Pop!_OS has sadly.

wheat plume
#

yeah, you can

The GSConnect gnome extension

vagrant elk
#

Yes, Pop!_OS now has their own desktop environment. It is a fork of Gnome but they feel it's different enough to call it their own.

shadow minnow
#

Especially if they would make like high frequency short band transfer thing so you could have MagSafe thing with high transfer speeds. I mean, wifi 6 is already in theory faster than lightning and with very short distance wireless data transfer you would maybe be able to match usb c speeds

wheat plume
#

does it have a system tray?

vagrant elk

Huh, Avanna over here teaching me new things.

wheat plume

here, try it

vagrant elk

What do you mean by system tray?

wheat plume

where app indicators live

vagrant elk

At the top, yes. They also have a MacOS-like bar at the bottom which is optional.

wheat plume

THEN THIS SHOULD WORK! its gnome underneat

vagrant elk

Tapping the super key brings up a launcher now instead of the applications menu which is actually quite nice.

You can still open the application menu by clicking it in the top left if you prefer.

wheat plume

It lives in the gnome dropdown

my phone on 71% battery
good to know

#

@vagrant elk If you have regular KDE Connect installed, remove it, cause this extension includes it

vagrant elk

I have a feeling that I'll be using it a lot between my PinePhone and Pop!_OS.

shadow minnow

Very likely not buying 13 pro max but wish my phone had its battery life.
But also the new cameras and 10-120hz

wheat plume
#

Then get the regular 13

shadow minnow

Just skipping 13s most likely

May go for like 14 pro max but after that I don’t expect to buy a new phone in at least two to five years

shadow minnow
vagrant elk
#

Always keep your phone for as long as you can stand to. It substantially reduces e-waste. I hate e-waste.

shadow minnow
#

My phone is not going to waste after upgrading at all

vagrant elk
#

Always sell the old device, keep it around, give it to someone else, or recycle it as well.

ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

Sadly, the condition my mom left her previous phones in.... you cant do shit to make them useable again

#

.-.

shattered glass, broken displays, the metal back dented

vagrant elk

I just absolutely hate e-waste. If someone can still make use of their old devices, I'll encourage it in any way possible.

shadow minnow
#

My phone probably just will go to family phone cycle, actually only reason I was considering upgrading that soon this time lul

vagrant elk
#

My sibling loves Apple phones so every year that they get a new phone they keep the old one and they somehow manage to have multiple of them dead at the same time. With them having I think 3 iPhones sitting around now and 2 iPods, they always have a device for iMessage.

shadow minnow
wheat plume
#

I just wanna see how incredibly smooth iOS will be on 120Hz

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

6 MONTHS?!!!

#

WTF

#

WHY

vagrant elk
#

I'm a tech enthusiast and the only two things I have to replace in the near future is my router and network switch since they don't work on 230V.

wheat plume
#

Tbh, that sounds like effort
Its a pain to reinstall and resetup shit on the phone

#

Especially auth apps and accounts

vagrant elk
# wheat plume WHY

They were those people that somehow get a brand new phone and then the same or next day have a smashed screen, bent phone, and you can clearly tell they abuse their devices.

shadow minnow
# ashen spindle sorry but thats just a dumb sentence

True. Makes no sense idk why I wrote it. Wanted to basically say that I tend to like new devices even though I won’t be able to upgrade for long but realized my old devices always go to someone else and everyone can basically give or sell their old device so yeah, that really was a dumb thing from me to say.

vagrant elk
#

My landlord is a perfect example of an Apple phone abuser. She gets Apple Care every time she gets a new phone and the moment new phones are in stores she intentionally breaks her old phone to the point of being potentially impossible to repair and demanding a brand new device.

wheat plume
#

o.o

#

ew

vagrant elk
#

Instead of doing that she could sell her old phone and get the new one for $500+ less but whatever.

shadow minnow
#

Tbh I wish I would not have to worry about my phone. The surface is so nice but to scared to ever have it caseless. Wish it just would not break lul
My 6s plus has managed to survive so many drops that I don’t get it tbh, but since then became lot more careful

vagrant elk
shadow minnow
shadow minnow
#

Also my silicone case is falling apart after not even one year

#

I guess I will get it replaced, especially since apart from warranty MagSafe does not communicate with phone on the case for some reason

vagrant elk
#

The way my landlord does things currently she basically drops her phone, throws it at sidewalks as hard as she can and hits them with hammers until it doesn't turn on anymore. Then she demands a new phone because to her Apple Care is amazing or something. Absolutely terrible for e-waste.

wheat plume
#

Can I punch her?

#

plz...

#

Until she no longer works

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

Yes! Perfect

ashen spindle
#

maybe first beat up apple for making them so fragile and unrepairable in the first place since that would not work if they could be fixed easier

shadow minnow
#

My lightning cables and earphones could become waste unfortunaty though. Cabled earbuds used to hate me, and also was not the worst at breaking lightning cables. Which MagSafe has solved. No more cable coming from down side of the phone is just great

wheat plume
#

I currently have a pair of wired earphones ordered from Amazon that arent dispatched yet

#

(been 4 working days since ordering them ;-;)

shadow minnow
vagrant elk
#

I'm kind of excited for the PinePhone to get Qi charging but I am wondering what specification it will be. Currently they use 15 watt USB-C so if it's anything less I'll be avoiding it. If it's anything more I definitely want to use it since it will speed up charging quite a bit.

ashen spindle
#

dear god do not start to pretend like apple is not doing it's best to make any sort of repair impossible

vagrant elk
#

^

ashen spindle
vagrant elk
#

Apple is the worst.

ashen spindle
#

cant even replace it with literally an identical phone's parts

shadow minnow
#

I am saying it’s getting pretty bad with repairability and should be definitely better

vagrant elk
#

Same with Samsung, Huawei, and virtually every other phone manufacturer these days.

ashen spindle
#

you said "it’s bad but not as bad." when they added features to make it worse than the 12...

vagrant elk
#

Samsung doesn't even let you unlock the bootloader without disabling what was it? Your camera or something stupid?

wheat plume
#

camera

#

yep

shadow minnow
wheat plume
#

meanwhile, Xiaomi don't care if you unlock the bootloader or install custom ROM
As long as your problem is not caused by doing that while under warranty

ashen spindle
#

" still usually more easily repairable than certain other companies" what other companies adds software to block replacement screens form another iphone

vagrant elk
#

People make fun of my PinePhone but listen, if I can have a device in this day and age that happily lets me do anything I want without that stuff and has schematics available and has easily replaceable parts and a manual on how to do so I will take it any day regardless of the performance.

shadow minnow
wheat plume
#

PinePhone would be great if it wasnt as powerful as a phone from 2010

vagrant elk
#

My main reasons for enjoying it is simply the openness since what I do doesn't need high performance.

wheat plume
#

Fair

vagrant elk
#

I understand the concerns with its performance though, I agree, it would be nice with a stronger processor.

shadow minnow
vagrant elk
#

Don't forget that it isn't just phone companies either, car companies, farming equipment companies and many other industries love making your device impossible to repair.

ashen spindle
#

yeah but this is not about that, this is trying to show the apple fanboy that apple is indeed not better than others in this regard 😛

vagrant elk
#

Only mentioning it because so many people think it's just an Apple issue or just a phone industry issue. You guys might know better but others don't.

shadow minnow
#

True. Also that’s why I mentioned the s21 thing. Because tbh mostly only ever heard of iPhones bad repairability being and and never really knew it’s worse with other flagships phones.
Now I am not by any means saying that makes the bad repairability justifiable.

vagrant elk
#

While other phone companies are bad, it's Apple that are often leading the charge in making reparability worse with others following when they see they can get away with it.

#

That isn't to say it always Apple, just that it's often Apple. Other companies like Samsung seem to be making their own waves with anti-repair changes lately.

shadow minnow
#

Apple really can sometimes lead bad changes for most consumers. Like 3.5mm jack and charger in the box.
Also ironic how some companies released ads against it but followed lul

shadow minnow
vagrant elk
#

Well, the funny thing is that people have it engraved in their mind that a removeable back and battery make the phone bulky or prone to water damage when that is far from the case. Companies just do it to screw customers over. There's no excuse other than saying "that's so 2010" which is just an out-of-touch take.

shadow minnow
#

Saw some people saying that people should bear consequences of not being careful enough and just buy a new phone if they brake it or apple care, and that repairability does not matter.
Now that’s what I call a fanboy lul

shadow minnow
vagrant elk
#

Why I prefer the PinePhone over other devices:

REPAIRABILITY (schematics and parts are everywhere, not just from Pine64)
I only call/text with Signal and Session because apparently I'm old or something and people use apps and want extreme performance

vagrant elk
shadow minnow
#

I kinda need iMessages and FaceTime.
But still prefer iOS so not really an issue for me.

shadow minnow
ashen spindle
#

I feel like you are adding complex sounding issues that aren't issues really

vagrant elk
#

What? The PinePhone accomplishes wireless charging and a removeable battery with no issues at all. There are pogo pins on the top of the phone which allow other features like wireless charging, adding bigger batteries, and so on with cases that have connectors. That's it. That's how wireless charging is implemented.

#

By top of the phone I mean top half on the inside of the phone.

ashen spindle
#

if a camera can use a directly removeable battery and make it waterproof a close case like a phone wont need anything special to make it waterproof and replaceable with some extra steps

vagrant elk
#

With some O-rings and other similar measures it's quite easy. Basically what Quintosh said.

ashen spindle
#

and that's just taking what other things on the market already do, now imagine what apple's engineers could come up with if they looked at that instead of ways to obstruct things on purpose

Mac theme?

wheat plume
#

White-Sur

vagrant elk
#

If so it's a pretty good one. Actually had me convinced for a second that it was a Mac.

wheat plume
#

I have to use the non-transparent version of the theme

#

cause it gets fucked up by nvidia drivers for some reason

#

The theme dev is aware of this and doesnt know how to fix it yet

vagrant elk
#

I don't blame them, NVIDIA is a mess on Linux.

wheat plume
#

^^

vagrant elk
#

It's a nice theme though! I like the pink accent.

wheat plume
#

They made a Firefox theme too, you can have it look like Safari before and after macOS Monteray

vagrant elk
#

They did a good job of it then.

#

That's pretty good.

wheat plume
#

very!

vagrant elk
#

Of course it's an anime profile. Everything is these days.

#

Not hating, just surprised that anime profile pictures are everywhere.

wheat plume
#

you install it using install.sh and you can pass it many arguments to customise the theme to your liking
Which is how I have round corners and purple acent color

vagrant elk
#

Attention to detail in an install script? That's uncommon but welcome!

wheat plume
#

yeah! and it gives proper feedback as it runs

vagrant elk
#

The PinePhone install script to encrypt the drive only gives me the option to pick if I want ext4 or FAT32. I chose ext4 for obvious reasons.

wheat plume
#

OR, you can run the script with dialog boxes instead so you have a gui to choose what customisation you wanna apply

vagrant elk
#

If it has lots of flags and options I'd definitely use the GUI.

#

Depends on how it's implemented though, sometimes TUIs can look good and provide all necessary information. It's rare but I've seen it done.

wheat plume
#

Ive never used the GUI actually xd

#

you still got to use the script to make it use dialogs :P

#

I do like that this is an option

vagrant elk
#

That's an awesome option to have too since everyone will want something different.

wheat plume
#

And if you run the install script more than once to try different options, you can tell it what to call the theme in the Tweak Tool so you can know which is which

#

so like WhiteSur-Purple or WhiteSur-Pink-Round etc :D

#

TBF, this theme creator does this with all their theme, not just this one

vagrant elk
#

Extremely useful option I never make use of properly. I always end up naming things "idk 1", "what is this", "how does this look" and "I hate life" just hoping that I remember all of them and what they do.

wheat plume
#

Ive been switching between WhiteSur and Fluent quite a bit

#

Made by the same person

vagrant elk
#

I did similar things with my code when I used to code all the time, it wasn't very useful for other people. Useless comments like "I can't figure this out because I'm lazy, suck at coding, my brain hurts, haven't slept in a day and have already gone through a full pot of coffee, fix it later you ..." you get the point.

#

Theme creators have always been interesting for me. There have been some that make a theme and just want it to look nice while others have taken a scientific approach which takes years to "perfect" despite the fact that the changes are not noticeable to the end user.

wheat plume
#

not to mention, this creator goes out of their way to make an icon pack + wallpaper set + firefox theme + plasma desktop version for ALL THEIR THEMES

#

Making an icon pack seems like a massive pain in the ass, cause there is thousands of apps out there

#

Ive seen icon packs go up to like 70MB in size

vagrant elk
#

I wish I could remember what theme it was. I think it was GTK candy or something. I had it for every single program and absolutely loved it. The icon pack, browser, colours. It was just lovely.

wheat plume
#

oo wow

vagrant elk
#

It is not GTK Candy. I can't remember the name.

wheat plume
#

Candy is currently an icon pack

vagrant elk
#

I just remember that the icons were coloured and were outline-based rather than full on icons.

wheat plume
#

Customised and ported to newer version by ArcoLinux :D

vagrant elk
#

Firefox in particular was beautiful.

#

I would check but it isn't available for Gnome, only for KDE.

#

Sweet KDE!

#
wheat plume
vagrant elk
#

I don't know why, I just loved Sweet KDE. I thought it was wonderful.

wheat plume
vagrant elk
#

The top bar didn't look right otherwise.

wheat plume
#

This makes Firefox look like Epiphany browser xd

vagrant elk
#

It is scuffed with that theme, I know.

wheat plume
vagrant elk
#

I love Nord, just wish it was a tad bit more black and less blue.

wheat plume
#

(There is Nord Darker, iirc)

#

its not official but it exists

vagrant elk
#

Seems like Nord themselves have multiple palettes which I actually didn't know and some of them look like colour palettes I would use.

wheat plume
#

I got a fucking spam email written in Irish

#

Wtf :')

#

I wanna open it to see all of it but I won't cause it's in the spam folder

vagrant elk
#

I actually find it weird that just by switching from Outlook to ProtonMail I went from getting multiple spam emails a day to getting literally nothing in 6+ months. I think it's just because it's an uncommon domain but maybe they just catch spam and outright block it. No idea.

wheat plume
#

Stenography

#

First time I heard of that

vagrant elk
#

At least it's cheap. I wonder if it would come with a case.

wheat plume
#

It seems to be just bare pcb with a thin cover on each side

vagrant elk
#

Reminds me of that weird keyboard we discussed a while back.

#

You know, the one that sounded way better than it should've.

wheat plume
#

Ooohhhh yes

#

:')

iron wave
#

I just spent like 2 hours trying to optimize code because a library that collects real time data was only giving me like 20% of the generated data.

The basic example has the problem and the vendor supplied program that you can use to capture the same data doesn't have the problem.

How fun!

OLED has had VFR before this too.

shadow minnow

iron wave

There are like 30 different types of screw in the phone with different lengths.

chrome estuary

What shitty practice. Just permanently lock the fucking bootloader at that rate

You put a slightly too long one in a short hole and you brick the phone.

iron wave

It's hilarious that they where ordered to pay the 30% though.

#

For breach of contract.

shadow minnow

Only thing they achieved was apple having to allow other payment processors or links to websites but not sure if they still aren’t entitled to their cut on that

iron wave
#

They aren't.

#

Epic needs to pay up because of the contract breach though.

chrome estuary

Didn't they both lose?

Technically

iron wave

It's so weird that Android is pretty much more secure than iOS at this point even though you can sideload anything you want.

shadow minnow

By the way Aeon, I had nothing to do yesterday and learned about nuclear just because you seem to love it so much. Apparently nuclear is deemed safer than fossil fuels, at least in the metric of kilowatt hours generated to deaths. Coal, oil, natural gas and others are far worse. Just not sure what to say on the waste because that stuff has to be stored safely for thousands of years.

pale sigil
#

That's the downside really

#

Waste

There needs to be ways to reprocess

Nuclear is extremely safe compared to Fossil.

And tbh storing waste is pretty braindead since you can take the original fuel from the ground.

And then you bury the used fuel.

Uh, if you fuck up too bad, don’t think worse fuck up with fossil can match that.
Talking about short term, it’s for sure different with long term, where fossil really sucks

young pecan
#

How're you gonna accomplish this with nuclear?

shadow minnow
young pecan
#

Short term we raise global temps by 3 degrees and cause massive global flooding, killing tens of thousands of people per continent at a bare minimum and uncountable animal life.

#

With fossil.

reef tundra
#

Like next century at our rate

young pecan
#

With nuclear maybe we get a few Chernobyl's here and there.

shadow minnow
#

I mean, that’s long term. Short term meant like singular disaster happening short period of time. But sure, long term fossil is worse

#

Short term meant sth like Chernobyl

young pecan
#

Even short term fossil is worse than something like Chernobyl. shrugs

reef tundra
young pecan
#

Let's say short term is within 10 years, for argument.

#

@vagrant elk What're the annual death counts of fossil again?

vagrant elk
#

I just woke up an hour ago, not able to properly think or remember things yet. Sorry.

young pecan
#

Hmm.

vagrant elk
#

Those kind of metrics are generally easy to come by though.

latent mural
#

deaths due to fossil pale in comparison to the fact that the vast majority of the people living breathe dirty air

#

don't have to die for it to be awful

reef tundra
#

Keep in mind the high carbondioxide is causing cognitive decline

shadow minnow
shadow minnow
#

Now I am not defending fossil at all just curious if there is anything on that scale that can happen short term

reef tundra
#

Atleast modern guidelines would not deny it happening

young pecan
#

Idk if that counts as immediate, but it's more than any nuclear has ever done.

reef tundra
#

Keep in mind coal is also radioactive and usually to just be released in the air. Radioactive decay is conciderabily worse in the body than being around it lul

young pecan
#

Eat anything emitting alpha and prepare for death. KEKW

reef tundra
#

Depends on the dose and how well your body can handle the amount of necrosis in the time

#

The weighting of alpha paricles to be 20x the gamma decay. ICRP

I genuinely am still amazed how you are watching endless hours on how to do things on linux distros but assume on windows there is no option other than clicking the one thing it directly shows you

wheat plume

TBF, I spend maybe an hour or two at most trying to figure things out on Linux

and not very often

misty saffron

sorry how much

wheat plume

Sometimes its things like messing with themes and whatnot

ashen spindle

and that is about how much I spend on windows settings in an entire year maybe lmao so a quick google/youtube search surely would show you a quick tutorial on how to change registry or w/e the first result is to pause them for longer
