basically impossible to make a decent product that sells well

Just a bog standard mouse with top tier components and decent side buttons that doesn’t come with bloatware.

#

I’d buy.

Paid 65 Euros for the Naga X, completely not worth it, it should be 40 MSRP. To think it's 80 GBP/Euros MSRP. Had to take the grip from an old tennis racket and fashion it on the pinky rest to make it bearable to use. Still the best MMO mouse on the market because it's the only one without some stupid gimmick and a half decent weight.

#

Razer have definitely been treating their mice better than their keyboards, even if it's because they decided to just rip off Logitech

#

How can I get a fairphone in the US

vagrant elk
# glossy sleet does it ship to outside of europe now? or will I have to wait 1234567890 years?

Last I checked it was still Europe-only. I gave up on that and settled on a PinePhone which I don't recommend unless you love Linux. Other decent options are the Google Pixel which can't be repaired easily, I think OnePlus has some cheap options, and in general looking at used phones can be quite cheap assuming it's the cost you're after. If you want a repairable phone the only options I know of are the PinePhone and FairPhone.

glossy sleet
#

arent all phones based on linux? besides apple

vagrant elk
#

Android uses a fork of the Linux kernel so it is technically both Linux and not Linux.

#

Apple used a fork of BSD if I recall correctly.

#

Yeah, I just doublechecked. Apple is using a fork of BSD, Android is using a fork of Linux.

young pecan
#

Lots of forks.

vagrant elk
#

Add enough forks and eventually you can't even call it the original.

young pecan
#

"What do you mean it's DOS?"

#

"Always has been"

vagrant elk
#

FairPhone only ships within Europe.

empty wren
#

If that is the price that is welcome change

vagrant elk
#

$750 is still a lot for a phone.

young pecan
#

Not really.

empty wren
#

I guess if we say phone yea

vagrant elk
#

I think the a series of Pixel phones are a couple hundred dollars cheaper right?

young pecan
#

Once logistics kick in it's a little above what I'd consider good.

empty wren
#

But if we say flagship then nah price is grear

astral haven
#

A series is alot cheaper
But on the other hand it's not flagship

#

Pixel 6 pro w more features

vagrant elk
#

I don't care about flagships, if I did I wouldn't have a PinePhone.

empty wren
#

Also add to mix a ton of top tier phones cost close to $1000 or more

#

Which I really do not see how it can be justified if it does not fold

vagrant elk
#

I just find phones over $500 to be expensive when I barely even use the device. It's just for me to send some messages, maybe do a couple calls and that's it.

young pecan
young pecan
#

Needs to be WAY improved.

astral haven
vagrant elk
#

I know other people use their phones for everything though in which case a $750 phone can be justified.

empty wren
young pecan
astral haven
#

And throw in a top tier sensor module then over 1k is fine

#

Or even 3

young pecan
#

I could do without any cameras, I think I've used mine twice in the last 4 years.

astral haven
#

My phone has 4 top tier sensor modules and a throwaway one

young pecan
#

Yeet the cameras, they're actually pointless on a phone. Slim that bitch down or put better sensors in for facial detection.

vagrant elk
astral haven
#

Best camera is the camera you have

#

And uh
If that camera is actually capable? Even better

vagrant elk
#

I read books physically. I prefer owning the physical book because I'm weird and enjoy the feel of paper, hardback books, and so on.

empty wren
#

In today's time I guess it makes sense

young pecan
#

I far prefer digital. Makes just carrying them around better.

vagrant elk
#

I understand why reading things digitally is popular though. It's far more convenient.

young pecan
#

Taking pictures sure, but do you really seriously need the camera bar on the new Pixel, for example?

empty wren
#

Design element

#

And I already think multiple cameras is useless

vagrant elk
#

I don't use my camera on my phone for anything, I even disabled it with the dip switch and disconnected it from the motherboard. I had to leave it in though just to make it so that there wasn't an awkward hole in the top.

astral haven
young pecan
#

How often is anyone taking photos on a phone that need a great camera? That's the most counter intuitive nonsense in human history. If you're a serious enough photographer that you need something better...

#

Bruh.

astral haven
vagrant elk
#

I prefer using an actual dedicated camera.

young pecan
#

Why are you even using a phone then? Even a tiny actual camera is going to spank the shit out of a phone.

astral haven
#

That's a 1mm by .6mm smd

young pecan
#

It really super will.

vagrant elk
#

In almost every single case it will.

young pecan
#

Grandmother is a photographer professionally.

#

Her collection is amazing.

astral haven
#

Tiny camera have limitations

vagrant elk
#

I've only ever seen extremely niche cases where, without editing, the phone wins because of post-processing. Throw the camera's picture into some editing software and it wins.

young pecan
#

And they'll still be better than a phone just because of the lens distance.

astral haven
#

Again microscope and telescopic

young pecan
#

Anything even remotely expensive (going anywhere past $300 AUD) is going to absolutely ruin a phone.

astral haven
#

That's very much not true

#

Not without a lens collection

young pecan
glossy sleet
#

fair phone will probably start shipping to other countries when they build another thing thing there

young pecan
#

That's more of a 'use a tool for it' moment.

empty wren
#

Ultra wide is better in my opinion and can do double duty

astral haven
vapid zodiac
#

the phone cameras are very good for their size but still wont beat a proper sized sensor

young pecan
#

Sensor size and lens distance play the biggest factor.

vagrant elk
#

You just need a lens for the use case.

astral haven
vapid zodiac
#

just use a sem 5Head

empty wren
astral haven
#

Not on opencamera

#

Which is what I use because it allows more zoom

young pecan
#

...

empty wren
#

But the real reason phone cameras are so good is because you can use filters and send it to Snapchat

vagrant elk
#

Who uses Snapchat?

young pecan
#

A microscope doesn't record things with a sensor. Pepega

empty wren
vagrant elk
#

Imagine using social media. dogekek

astral haven
young pecan
#

Usually when you aren't professional.

#

But hey, if you're doing something for profession you should probably be using really nice equipment if you can.

astral haven
#

Yes but a digital microscope is better for your neck

young pecan
#

The customer is always the risk of a karen.

astral haven
#

And a digital conversion kit is the cost of a phone and a $20 bracket

young pecan
#

...

#

A phone with a 12MP camera being... how much remind me?

#

Between 500 and a grand or something, aye? (AUD)

astral haven
#

Something you already have

#

Again it's about the tool that you have on you

young pecan
#

Point being if you're doing component level repair for any reasonable amount of time it's probably a pretty worthwhile investment.

#

And a decent microscope for that job is a couple hundred or so.

#

And WAY better than a phone (which is both less good and more expensive) and an adapter.

astral haven
#

If I'm repairing a $200 nic it's cheaper for me to actually just buy the nic on eBay than to buy a microscope and fix it

young pecan
#

Not really.

#

Budget option is maybe 200 AUD.

#

Which is 140 USD.

#

Note also you'd have a good tool to fix future component death.

#

And hey, maybe the chip you need is between $10 and $50 or so.

astral haven
#

Ah but my time is worth something

#

And I'd also need a new component tester because my multimeter can't see this cap

young pecan
#

Indeed. Save time by having good tools if you're already going to do the job?

#

Actually how much is a component tester?

empty wren
#

Can be more useful than that

astral haven
#

Actually probably I'm just gonna return it lol

#

What

#

Periscope landscape???

empty wren
#

The camera that is square with mirrors in a phone

astral haven
#

Landscape is usually wide angle

#

Periscope is only useful for zooooom

empty wren
#

You could use it to take a picture of where you cannot go, but landscape is not the best word unless if vegetation is very abundant

#

Some areas are protected or I do not think anybody want to jump into the Grand canyon

astral haven
#

Anyways my phone goes from 16? to 110 mm physically (35mm equivalent)

empty wren
#

If only super resolution algorithms were present on phones would make more use of multiple cameras

astral haven
#

And my phone is smaller and lighter than every single one of my lenses

#

Even the cheapest Canon kit crap

#

Have you considered gcam?

empty wren
#

Yeah even on a camcorder a picture of a moon looks so good zoomed into even in digital

astral haven
#

Ah shoot the moon isn't out tonight

empty wren
#

What you wanted to become a wolfman tonight?

astral haven
#

I could show you what a phone can do

empty wren
#

Is it continuous long exposure

#

Or some kind of zoom?

astral haven
empty wren
#

Oh interesting

astral haven
#

Here's a pic I took of the moon a few nights ago

empty wren
#

Just a question

#

You do not have a Huawei phone which pulls internet images and then gives you it as the shot taken of a moon?

astral haven
#

This was a few nights before that when the moon was red for some reason

vagrant elk
#

Discord compression really doesn't make the pictures look good.

astral haven
astral haven
empty wren
#

Hmm can you upload that to google photos for a second?

astral haven
#

The problem is that you need 300mm equivalent
And those lenses are suuuuuper expensive

astral haven
empty wren
#

Ah nevermind

young pecan
#

Yeet it into dropbox or something?

#

Or Mega?

astral haven
#

They really aren't a whole ton better

#

It's all infinity focus in theory

empty wren
#

Still looks alright, acceptable with how much distance it looks to be from you

astral haven
#

If your infinity focus is calibrated well it should just work

#

Let's put it this way
My phone can outperform my eye at everything but speed

#

It can see smaller, zoom further, and record better

#

It can see better at night too

astral haven
#

Because if you have too large a sensor it will move too much for you to be able to take a clear image

empty wren
astral haven
#

This is about what I see compensated

#

This is what my phone can make out

#

And this doesn't have a tripod

#

The big problem with large cameras (DSLR or milc) is that they cant stabilize for shit

empty wren
#

Hence why I see people carrying tripods

astral haven
#

Long exposures require a tripod with a full size camera

#

Easy as that

#

But that's not true for a cellphone

empty wren
#

Actually eh

astral haven
#

A good cellphone

empty wren
#

Yeah software can somewhqt compensate

#

But if you want a non blurry or messy photo still a tripod is good for phone long exposure

astral haven
#

No not even software compensation
I mean actually how phones do long exposure

empty wren
#

Like a minute?

#

Or how do you mean

astral haven
#

Gcam will take sequences of images then composite them in software

empty wren
#

Oh

astral haven
#

Digital cameras will physically expose the sensor for that period of time

empty wren
#

Ah

#

I see your point now

#

Though still I will say you can mess it up

astral haven
#

Ofc

#

But it's alot harder

empty wren
#

It can be made a lot harder with motion photos as well

astral haven
#

Yup but ibis doesn't really help with long exposures :/

#

I've seen comparisons

#

Like don't get me wrong a proper milc or DSLR will slaughter a phone in many circumstances

#

But the problem is that I have a phone on me now

#

And my very tiny camera weighs 6 pounds because of my microscopic collection of lenses

#

And God you have no idea how expensive close focusing lenses are

#

Fuck I just totalled it
If I spend any more money on my camera I'll have spent more on it than on my phone

#

And only 2 out of my 5 lenses support autofocus

vagrant elk

Not sure about the high-end 3D printers but the lower end ones use a metal/plastic mix to make the circuitry which is less electrically conductive than pure metal traces.

vagrant elk

They just use cheaper materials and are more limited in size.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sintering#Sintering_of_metallic_powders

Not the ones which work with metal directly.

Sintering or frittage is the process of compacting and forming a solid mass of material by heat or pressure without melting it to the point of liquefaction.
Sintering happens naturally in mineral deposits or as part of a manufacturing process used with metals, ceramics, plastics, and other materials. The atoms in the materials diffuse across the...

vagrant elk
#

I know, like I said above they use the cheaper materials. One of them is a material mixed with graphene so it's electrically conductive but not as much as metals. Mostly good for prototyping with the cheap printers, the big ones are if you want actual production-ready PCBs.

reef patrol
reef tundra
#

Graphene? Other than great performance in the lab it has yet to show its use for the cost

reef patrol
#

Not like your inkjet printer is printing one colour at a time either, or the plumbing would clog and mix up for weird hues.

reef tundra
#

Remember to get a hardend nozzle with reinforced filament :) brass is pretty soft

vagrant elk
#

Graphene was used in a mixture with other materials to make it conductive but it's far more common to make a weird mix of other materials to get the same effect.

reef tundra
#

Charcoal finely ground up not enough?

vagrant elk
#

There are various conductive filaments available today. For 2D prints, the most commonly used material is ink containing a metal such as silver. As well as this, conductive variants of most filaments exist, such as ABS, PLA, HIPS, or TPU. These filaments contain graphene, which allows them to conduct electricity, although not as well as metals.

vagrant elk
#

I was mostly just quoting this article.

reef tundra
#

What is the resistivity of the filament anyway?

vagrant elk
#

I actually don't know, the article doesn't say unfortunately.

#

The cheaper 3D printers for PCBs use filaments with graphene or ink that has silver in it. The more expensive ones do actual metal traces.

reef tundra
#

I wouldnt even bother if electroplate coating would be adequete. Might serve as base to stick the copper/silver/other metal to 🤔

old marlin
vagrant elk
#

I just thought the technology was really interesting and that I'd share.

#

I feel like PCB prototyping would be extremely good with the cheaper printers. Yes, they require multiple nozzles but they would be extremely good for quickly making board changes and arriving at a final version faster than waiting for production somewhere in the world and shipping.

reef tundra
vagrant elk
#

Worth noting as well that it's possible to 3D print the PCB and do the traces with a separate machine or by hand if you so desired.

reef tundra
#

Can do some light cnc work if you have the know how

vagrant elk
#

You just have to leave trenches for the traces.

reef tundra
#

Just dont hope to cut steel :)

vagrant elk
#

Well with 3D printing there is no CNC work required. Just put trenches in the model being printed and it'll leave trenches for you.

reef tundra
#

Can do both ;)

wheat plume

reef tundra

Would rather deal with direct bank transfers than paypal

vagrant elk
#

The goal was to have a website provider that is:

1.) Cheap
2.) Has options for payment processors and doesn't force PayPal
3.) Is reasonable and ideally doesn't skim more money off the top of every transaction

#

In the case of WordPress it's dirt cheap and it lets me use basically any payment processor, many of which support Icelandic businesses. It also doesn't force user tracking on my website and doesn't skim money off the top of purchases.

I want to get the ones that just plug into the back directly

old marlin

then the rules are pepeg

#

just like in minecraft

#

hardware abuse and software abuse should be equally bannable

#

you don't actively press the button by spinning a wheel really quick

sage lodge

the only game that allows a macro for that kind of thing is Doom, where the rate at which you spin the wheel actually affects the outcome so they just made a macro to make it fair

aka

make a giant flywheel

sage lodge
#

borderlands is frame rate limited/game speed limited (and it’s mostly for carpal tunnel prevention since you can achieve the same result from a mouse click or dual binds)

old marlin
#

attach a fast mcu

#

why are dual binds allowed

but not macros

still bs

sage lodge

cause the game allows them

dual binds as in bind 2 buttons to the same action

coming from a game that doesn't recognize more than 7 a second

point stands

hardware abuse should be as bannable as software abuse

the general idea of the rules is that anything that is simply repeated presses of the same key is free scrollable but something like a menuing macro would be banned

old marlin
#

so why do you need scroll wheels

#

if a macro that imitates the inputs of a scrollwheel would be ok

sage lodge
#

the other thing the free scroll hardware does is limit you to only 2 inputs on that wheel at once

#

so if you want to do 3 things at that speed, no can do

#

also, in the multiplayer speed runs it facilitates one of the more clever tricks where you drop 20 fake copies of the gun you’re holding

reef tundra
#

I would let macros be, use em if you think its the meta. Any setup can be copied by others if they want to.. :)

sage lodge
#

the general rule is one button press = one in game input

#

which is pretty fair

#

the wooting multi actuation point macros kinda break that rule? so idk if they’d be allowed

reef tundra
#

Especially at professional level with all the hardware made identical 🤷 The crowd wants the best gamers in the competition

sage lodge
#

the other reason scroll wheels are allowed is since you can do it non free scroll, it’s just harder

old marlin
#

forces you to use certain hardware

#

"just build the giant flywheel that can input a 4k inputs a second"

#

"just write a software that can do the inputs for you"

#

although those are both less intrusive in how you play the game ig

sage lodge
reef tundra
#

Its most interresting when the rules are more lax for me. More adapting strategies and scene.

sage lodge
#

yeah, the scroll thing dates back to hl2 bhops

reef tundra
#

As long as anyone can do the same, it is all fair game to me

old marlin
#

anyone can write the macro, build the flywheel and buy the g502 as much as the next one can

sage lodge
#

i think most games where it’s permitted, it’s not the thing that actually makes the speedrun work

reef tundra
#

Exploits would be fine, if anyone can use it and isnt some instant win kind of deal

sage lodge
#

that’s why DOOM requires a macro, since it’s what makes the speedrun so fast

#

not using it is an instant disadvantage

#

same reason some games are ran with an fps cap

old marlin
#

unless you wanna get health issues

#

not really a compromise

reef tundra
#

🤷 They choose to not do the macro, they lost fair and square. *if they had the opportunity

old marlin
sage lodge
old marlin
reef tundra
#

%any

sage lodge
old marlin
#

so you either use a stupid method, a method that risks your health or use a mouse that you don't wanna use but are kinda forced to

#

nice

sage lodge
#

you can also use a normal mouse wheel

reef tundra
sage lodge
#

the game only allows a certain amount of inputs per tick

#

so over some number it doesn’t matter

old marlin
#

ok

#

so the free spinning aspect of the wheel is irrelevant

sage lodge
#

just makes it more comfortable

old marlin
#

aka the whole feature is useless

sage lodge
#

i use free scroll more for textbook pdfs

reef tundra
#

Also keep in mind that professional level/athletes is the only place it would matter enough to bother

old marlin
#

aka

#

holding mmb and dragging your mouse

#

but worse

#

well yes

#

but the people that make the rules are the ones that abuse it

reef tundra
#

Having a computer also assists in the situation

old marlin
#

until someone takes the stupidity of the rules to a peak

old marlin
reef tundra
old marlin
#

yes

#

aka

#

the giany flywheel

#

inputting stuff at superhuman speeds

#

but you started turning it with your own power

#

so it is completely legal

#

ig

reef tundra
#

You would have to sacrifice the ability to more finely tune with macros, and a button which could have done another task instead. I guess so long as the input are initiated by the players. Someone has to choose to the end result thonk

#

I just don't like Rust at all

#

Well, I like some of the ideas but the language echh and the gorillions of microdependencies

vagrant elk
#

Rust is a good language but it has the same issue that C++ has: you struggle to read other people's code in a lot of cases. I prefer C solely due to the readability of the language and how easy it is for other developers to come along and understand your code.

crimson wigeon
#

I just want to try this simple looking TUI app whoops it just took forever to compile and ate a whole goddamn GiB of storage

vagrant elk
reef tundra
crimson wigeon
#

Best is when a dependent crate somewhere uses a native library except an old incompatible version and I'm not even sure how to get started patching that

vagrant elk
#

I have issues with Rust as a language, I'm waiting for Zig to reach the 1.0 release and then I'll learn the language since it is literally a drop-in memory-safe C replacement.

It might actually give me a reason to get a development machine that runs Power9 or RISC-V.

crimson wigeon

reef tundra
#

Once couldnt read a floating variable because it didnt have expliicitly defination of 0

reef tundra
vagrant elk
#

I was more so thinking that with SiFive's RISC-V processors you can specify exactly what you need for an MCU or something else and get a processor which is capable of exactly what you need.

#

They actually have the E31 and E34 which are intended for specifically signal processing and are intended for use as an MCU.

vagrant elk
#

ARM and RISC-V processors are good for MCUs though assuming you are pushing the electronics to their limit with 8000hz and such.

vagrant elk
#

I just think that RISC-V has one major advantage over ARM which is the ability to specify the exact amount of cache you need, whether or not the debug console is easy to access or requires a password, what kind of cache you want, how many floating points you need and so on.

#

You can tailor it to your exact needs which is nice but I'm sure the customisation would cost a lot more than a standard ARM CPU.

vagrant elk

He's done 3 home server builds if I remember right, this one included of course.

At the time of building this PC I bought some of the better overclocking parts on the market such as the motherboard and RAM. To be honest I just sorted power supplies by 80 Plus rating which I now know thanks to Gamers Nexus that it is NOT a way to determine which power supply you should buy.

#

I am actually extremely happy that I accidentally got a good power supply. Looking at the box it's safe for use in all countries by just replacing the power cord. That's huge if I ever decide to move.

#

That would probably look weird due to the video artifacts

reef patrol
#

Eh? No that is how to get perfect scaling 😛

#

One pixel becomes four.

I need a very small ethernet cable xD

Nothing unusual. You see super short ones that go from one rack to the one above everywhere in servers.

But to answer your question in a SINGLE channel (please don't crosspost), depending on when you ordered you're either in Batch 1 or 2 and that determines when your board arrives. 🙂

I know most cities are quite bad though. If I lived a tiny bit more South the entire city is depressing. Homeless people everywhere (I don't hate homeless people, just saying that it makes the city look grungy and hints that the city may have underlying issues), needles on the sidewalks and streets, constant fights. It's bad.

crisp granite
#

I mean...yeah, avoid the sketchy elements

#

of course, the sketchy elements can come to you as well

vagrant elk
#

Can't even enter a mall there without walking past at least 10 people that are using needles.

At least you're positive about it. I can tell by the extremely enthusiastic "woooo".

crisp granite

that was...sarcasm

at least, I think it was

vagrant elk
#

Mine was sarcasm, yes.

crisp granite
#

so was my statement

vagrant elk
#

I know.

crisp granite
#

honestly though, every city will have a bad area

#

it's life

#

just stick to the better areas

vagrant elk
#

I think it has something to do with population. The smaller the city I visit the less bad parts there are and the cleaner the entire city seems to become.

#

Definitely isn't solely based on population but it's likely a factor.

crisp granite
#

yeah

misty saffron
#

hahaha fun fact

crisp granite
#

it's a piece of the puzzle regardless

that was in a really wealthy area

vagrant elk

I used to help homeless people by buying them food when my shift was over but then I started noticing homeless groups popping up. It would be 10-50 people all over the city with the exact same clothes, sign, bible, and so on asking for money. Since that started around the time the pandemic started I haven't trusted anyone.

crisp granite
vagrant elk

They were groups pretending to be homeless just to be clear.

I learned that when I also learned my grade 10 aquatics class had 5 naloxone kits between us, in a fairly privileged area

#

out of 20 kids

#

5 of us were prepared to help someone with an opioid OD

#

and one person I knew, not personally, just in classes and such actually did OD after school, learned a week later he dropped dead

#

very wholesome

misty saffron
#

5 of them are prepared to help you?

#

damn

I re-installed Pop!_OS (I learned that this is apparently the proper capitalisation and grammar) and let me just say that I am not going back to Fedora. It feels so much better.

#

I just had to tweak the dock a bit and now I have my own Linux version of MacOS.

misty saffron
#

pov you’re a linux user

crimson wigeon
#

Mmm... distro hopping..

vagrant elk
#

I am and I will shout it from a mountain top if I have to.

#

I am not a distribution hopper.

#

I was using Pop!_OS for almost two years but the update to 21.04 broke my installation. Caused such a headache that I switched to Fedora Workstation for almost a year, switching back to Pop!_OS now because I prefer their layout and way of doing things.

#

I use Arch (btw) on my PinePhone though.

I have no idea what that means.
