#

All you'd really need to copy is save data.

#

You can save just purely the save files, nothing else.

crimson wigeon
#

Or just stash everything in C:\users\name

earnest jay
#

The games will get the rest again during download.

young pecan
#

Also could upload them into cloud storage.

wheat plume
young pecan
#

I personally just have all of my game folders synced to Mega.

earnest jay
#

Not ever game does cloud saves though

young pecan
#

Doesn’t need to.

earnest jay
#

Oh, like that, fair enough.

young pecan
#

Just setup Mega Sync to copy the game data files, yeah. :p

#

Incremental backups are nut worthy.

wheat plume
earnest jay
#

Clever idea, I only have 1 or maybe 2, steam games that don't do cloud save.

earnest jay
wheat plume
#

origin 🀒

earnest jay
#

Ahh.

young pecan
#

Pro tip, use MS Azure with Windows integrated backup schemes to have incremental backups for specific folders and multi site redundancy.

earnest jay
#

Cool.

young pecan
#

Might cost you $10 a month, but it’s fully integrated and can be copied over installs with setting backups.

#

Everyone sleeps on Azure.

halcyon moss
#

you dont reinstall linux every time when this happens right? you just run the grub install script right? RIGHT?

wheat plume
#

Yeah, but when it happens, neither windows or linux shows up in bios

#

so i cant boot into anything

earnest jay
halcyon moss
#

weird, i havent had this in aages

#

and i have a weird dual boot setup too :p

earnest jay
#

Might look into it.

young pecan
#

Their UI is garbage tier, but well worth learning.

halcyon moss
#

azure is a whole shebang of services

young pecan
#

^

wheat plume
#

wierd
It's the most basic dual boot setup possible :')
One SSD for Windows and one ssd for Linux

halcyon moss
#

like aws is

young pecan
#

Heaps of stuff. You have virtual PCs, backup schemes, bare metal servers (I think they still do that), enterprise grade data backups, and a whole host of other stuff.

halcyon moss
young pecan
#

Azure is ridiculous levels of versatility.

halcyon moss
#

dont forget about AWS and google cloud when looking into that stuff πŸ˜‰

young pecan
#

And actually the best part is that it just integrates into native windows. No tools required.

#

But AWS is pretty damn good as well.

#

Their container system is super nutty.

earnest jay
crimson wigeon
#

Yeah all those cloud services are easily available for all nowadays, that's how they get ya

#

Especially with those generous free trials

halcyon moss
#

once they got you locked in... its hard to switch vendor

#

unless you're purely using the docker services and nothing else

earnest jay
#

I bet.

#

I just looked at Azure, and they offer a 12 month free deal, which is a nice sounding starting incentive.

pale sigil
#

out of curiosity, do peeps here still use winrar still

wheat plume
#

nah m8

timid chasm
#

7zip 4 lyf

wheat plume
#

how do I ensure I have the newest version of Windows on my USB drive?

#

The Media Creation Tool?

timid chasm
#

download the latest version, I imagine

wheat plume
#

I will see when the ISO was uploaded

timid chasm
#

I would hope the media creation tool has the newest non-beta version

wheat plume
#

same

timid chasm
#

How many OS installs do you do a week?

#

Don'

#

t lie

wheat plume
#

The Tool gets "21H1" apparently

timid chasm
#

looks like the update tool is May2021

wheat plume
crimson wigeon
#

Mystery solved!

wheat plume
#

Now I got plug in my USB drives to figure out what one has windows on it

#

Ay..first try!

timid chasm
#

so H2 is October-ish release?*

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah it's probably coming out same time as 11 or thereabouts

timid chasm
#

Do they do halves and not quaters? What is H

wheat plume
#

I think they only refresh the ISO every 6 months now

timid chasm
#

Well if it's halves that'd make sense I guess

#

only major updates

wheat plume
#

yeah, 21H1 and 21H2

timid chasm
#

Oh

#

you're one of those

wheat plume
#

?

timid chasm
#

How the fuck are you going to abandon that which was born in your own country

wheat plume
timid chasm
#

using the tool instead of rufus

wheat plume
#

Rufus

#

oh yeah

#

I dont already have an ISO

#

so yeah....use this cause it gets the ISO and burns it in one go for me

timid chasm
#

might as well download it, you'll use it again with how often you install shit

wheat plume
#

no, cause I will always want the latest ISO, since I dont update it any further

timid chasm
#

well then wait a month to install πŸ˜›

wheat plume
#

new release in october?

timid chasm
#

that's when it was in 2020

wheat plume
#

hmmm

#

idk if I can, I need to clean up things at least so idk

timid chasm
#

I'm just giving you shit as usual. Do whatever you want

wheat plume
#

how come the snip and sketch shortcut doesnt open when some apps are focused?

#

cause it wont open on the media tool

#

hence why its not focused in the screenshots

timid chasm
#

never used that shortcut or tool

wheat plume
#

im big fan of screenshot shortcuts

timid chasm
#

I only ever use ShareX

wheat plume
#

35%

#

I guess I can let most of my photos get nuked

#

idrc about most of them now

wheat plume
#

wut

timid chasm
#

YOUVE NEVER SEEN KUNG FU PANDA

wheat plume
#

I have!

#

When I was like 10

timid chasm
#

hrm, I feel like I was 20 when it came out

#

actually that's probably accurate πŸ˜‚

#

let me check again

#

yeah, accurate

wheat plume
#

that not

#

xd why?

timid chasm
#

24 now?

wheat plume
#

nope

#

not yet

timid chasm
#

well give me a heads up so I can update it

wheat plume
#

LOL

#

thats a few months away

#

funny number goes brrr

timid chasm
#

nocie

#

why the fuck are valve base stations so expensive wtfff

wheat plume
#

idk :/

#

Dont you need 4 of these also?

crimson wigeon
#

"Two or more recommended"

wheat plume
#

Yeah I just saw that

timid chasm
#

I imagine 2 would be okay for most situations but not sure

#

I would think opposite positions?

wheat plume
#

i guess so maybe

pale sigil
#

2 is more than enough for most people

pale sigil
young pecan
#

2 is fine if you aren't doing heaps of stuff or multi limb.

pale sigil
#

not that i agree with the price

crimson wigeon
#

Maybe, although I think that style of tracking is a dead-end

young pecan
#

Oh it absolutely is, but the cheapest mocap suit is 40 grand. LUL

crimson wigeon
#

All in on that inside out tracking

#

I'm sure all the problems about it currently can be fixed

pale sigil
#

idk

crimson wigeon
#

Just attach cameras to the controllers ecks dee

pale sigil
#

how can you fix a controller up close to the sensor

#

lol

#

for example in onward

fickle ore
#

18 mins in queue

#

what u guys got

#

@ashen spindle 6700 xt inc

ashen spindle
#

I got my 6800 already in december...

#

I dont need another lol

fickle ore
#

fuu ;p

ashen spindle
#

but im surprised they added a queue to amd site

young pecan
#

@fickle ore What're you getting yours for?

fickle ore
#

wdym amd shop its msrp i think

ashen spindle
#

he means if you mine or game on it

young pecan
#

Actual MSRP or current defo not MSRP but we'll pretend it is MSRP?

fickle ore
#

498€

ashen spindle
#

or not, mindreading failed πŸ˜›

young pecan
#

Oh holy shit.

#

Nice.

fickle ore
#

496€ msrp

young pecan
fickle ore
#

well idk if I get it

#

im on the queue,

young pecan
fickle ore
#

600€ for 6800 or 496€ for 6700 xt

#

i cant decide πŸ˜„

young pecan
#

Ngl I'd go for the 6800.

ashen spindle
#

well amd would never scalp on their own shop

#

pr backlash would not be worth it

fickle ore
#

I dont play anything worth the 6800's anyway, at those resolutions

#

which one is more hot?

#

cooler*

young pecan
#

shrugs Never build a PC toward today.

ashen spindle
#

go for the 6700, get a big psu and safe the difference for a massive upgrade next year πŸ˜›

young pecan
#

Disagree.

#

6800 since it's basically a 3070 for 1100 AUD.

#

Worst case scenario you have yourself something that utterly spanks games, best case it also pays for itself.

#

Either way it's a win.

ashen spindle
#

what was it you said yesterday you're playing? rainbow 6?

crimson wigeon
#

For the AMD shuffle you're gonna want to get a lot of tabs waiting in the queue

#

Since everyone else is doing it

ashen spindle
#

if that's the main game, it's more than enough

young pecan
#

In FPS*

fickle ore
#

@crimson wigeon 11 mins left in queue

#

opens 17:05

crimson wigeon
#

Yes, read the text on the queue however

#

As a reminder, if you arrive before the sale begins, you will be assigned a randomized place in line (alongside others who arrive before the event begins).

#

Thus you need a lot of tabs for more chances

fickle ore
#

eh

young pecan
#

Iirc AMD shuffle doesn't exist for me. :C

fickle ore
#

Im already like first in the line methinks

#

last time it read over an hour

crimson wigeon
#

Yes you'll get to know if you get lucky in 10 minutes

#

Either you get in and can buy something (low chance) or it's "lol more than one hour get fucked"

fickle ore
#

heheh

#

ic

#

fuck it imma get 6800

young pecan
#

Pog.

crimson wigeon
#

Well I got one tab in immediately

#

But...... I kinda want the 6800 XT but it's out of stock

umbral knot
#

prayge I hope you can get it sometime soon

fickle ore
#

buy it for me πŸ˜›

#

I got scammed lololol 1 hour

crimson wigeon
#

Too late that lottery winning tab container is destroyed already

#

I had like 30 tabs open btw, one was 26 minutes and one was 1 minute, all others were 1 hour+

fickle ore
#

Hehe

crimson wigeon
#

If you wanna play this lottery next time..

fickle ore
#

Meh, 1060 rocks lol

young pecan
#

The entire Pascal generation was really good.

umbral knot
#

I used to have a 1060 6g but sold it right before the graphics card shortage started :sadge:

#

damn none of my sadge emotes work apparently

ashen spindle
#

should said you want something, I passed up on a rtx3080 at 700 last week bc I couldn't be arsed atm πŸ˜›

fickle ore
#

german dollars I imagine

ashen spindle
#

prussian money or gtfo πŸ˜›

young pecan
#

M8.

#

Didn’t lemme buy it.

#

I’d slay a bitch for a 3080 at that price.

ashen spindle
#

I mean if you want I can keep an eye on the next batch that should come in 2 weeks or maybe 1

young pecan
#

<3

fickle ore
#

I think I just want an amd 6700xt/6800 tbh πŸ˜„ If you're feeling generous and find one, I can buy it from you πŸ™‚

young pecan
#

Heavily appreciate it, my guy.

#

I have nowhere I can actually pick up cards that drop in other countries and it’s almost physically paining.

ashen spindle
young pecan
#

3080s for 2600 AUD. -_-

ashen spindle
young pecan
#

Idk what kind of actual clown tries selling them for that much, or what kind of joker is buying them for that much.

#

Fun fact, we had a limited run 3090 a few days ago for 7.8k.

#

1000 made, hand crafted and very beautiful.

#

But literally more than a halfway decent car.

crimson wigeon
#

Desperate people in these desperate times

young pecan
#

Fuck knows why. Just... hang around in stock drop discords. kekW

wheat plume
#

Do I have to do anything here?
Or do I just click next on this partition?

#

I want to clean install windows

#

So maybe I delete these two partitions and tell it to use the free space?

crimson wigeon
#

You've done so many reinstalls you should know at this point how you like it

wheat plume
#

Yeah
Bit it's always been to blank drives

#

Not one with windows already on it

#

So I just had to format it and it worked

crimson wigeon
#

If you do that then it'll just stash the previous installation into windows.old so you can revert to it if desired

wheat plume
#

Do what?

#

Just click next?

crimson wigeon
#

Install to a partition with Windows already installed

wheat plume
#

Oohh

#

So to fully clean install
I need to delete the drive 0 partitions?

crimson wigeon
#

Sure

wheat plume
#

I'm happy I have drive labels

#

Ok
I deleted both partitions
Made a new partition on the free space and now it's giving me this

I think that's good now

#

This screen is new....

reef patrol
#

Yeah it's the precursor to what they want in 11.

#

It basically pre-installs shit based on what you pick.

#

If you skip it you get the "old" barebones install

#

Fewer apps.

wheat plume
#

Now it's asking me to sign up to a game pass subscription

#

No thanks

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

It takes more than several minutes that's for sure

#

Oh... It got the wallpaper that I applied today loaded

#

But I don't have sync enabled why tf

#

Oh.....
I'll need to remember my fucking login for Nvidia drivers

ashen spindle
#

manual install doesnt need an account

wheat plume
#

Last time I tried the manual install it failed

reef patrol
#

I remember talking with Quinn about this, comparing URLs.

wheat plume
#

Oo

ashen spindle
#

doesnt change the fact GFE is not a driver and the driver itself doesnt need an account πŸ˜›

reef patrol
#

Sure - But once Experience is in, it insists on login to update drivers πŸ˜„

earnest jay
#

You can always manually download the drivers by going to nvidia geforce website and then download drivers subpage.

#

No GFE needed.

reef patrol
#

Not needed - But forced in πŸ˜„

#

The left one sneaks in GFE with no option to avoid it. The right one retains the toggle.

earnest jay
#

I always download through the left one, and I always get to option, in the installer, if I want to also install GFE along with the driver, for me that's not really a hassle.

reef patrol
#

@solar hinge remembers πŸ˜„

solar hinge
#

Yes fuck you windows store

#

Die

#

Filth

wheat plume
#

I don't have Sync enabled

Why it have my wallpaper??!!!

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

Nope
I nuked the drive

solar hinge
#

Have to do 'advanced search'

wheat plume
#

It happened last time too

#

When I first installed windows on this computer

reef patrol
#

Then you must have synced somehow πŸ˜„

wheat plume
#

I don't think so

gusty scaffold
#

thinks 'emerge nvidia-drivers' so much easer

reef patrol
# wheat plume I don't think so

It literally cannot appear out of nowhere. It has some kind of logical link to your data. This is a computer, not sorcery πŸ˜„

wheat plume
earnest jay
#

Automagically.

wheat plume
#

And only syncs wallpaper

#

Cause nothing else is set to what I had before

ashen spindle
#

well, in theory with enough bit flips it could happen without you doing anything OMEGALUL pray for the exact cosmic rays

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

Lel

#

Oh
Now I have this useless shit in my taskbar

ashen spindle
#

then disable it...

earnest jay
#

Welcome to 21H1.

ashen spindle
#

you could've had it disabled with less time than it took to make a phone picture of it lol

wheat plume
#

I need to remember how to disable it

earnest jay
#

But complaining is more fun. Mew_Giggle

wheat plume
#

So I need to look up online how to cause I forget

ashen spindle
#

right click on the task bar...

crimson wigeon
#

Yes the right click, very undiscoverable

wheat plume
#

I also mean the meeting button

#

That's not turned off with right click

gusty scaffold
wheat plume
#

True

#

I love ArcoLinux

#

If that isn't obvious already since I talk about it so much

#

That also let's you install Nvidia drivers during install

gusty scaffold
#

first time here, so not managed to notice it yet @wheat plume . Sure you can install nvidia driver automatically in Gentoo/Funtoo too, just add it to your USE flag and start your installation, just don't expect everything been installed the same day 🀣

wheat plume
#

Yes xd

#

The entire system just froze when I installed Firefox

#

It's mad at me for not using Edge

thick elk
#

I could use gentoo some time but I can't be bothered to remote compile it and doing it locally is just not practical when actually using the system and only having 6 cores

#

Also arch works just fine, so why bother changing.

#

My current install is 4 years old or so.

gusty scaffold
umbral knot
#

but the bitcoin tho

thick elk
#

At night my system is turned off, I do have a server with a 3570k@4.7ghz I could use.

gusty scaffold
#

I'm too lazy to turn off

thick elk
#

I just shut down and flip the switch, I like not looking at lights from my bed.

gusty scaffold
#

don't have computer in bedroom

umbral knot
#

The entire reason I yoinked my sister's room as soon as she moved out for college

thick elk
#

The sad part is that I had 2 rooms for a while but teenage me thought one is enough and now my mom uses it as an office.

#

Still it really doesn't bother me, it can be quite comfortable at times.

#

Oh wait I do have an extra room in the attic already

wheat plume
#

The Nvidia driver is 722mb

#

Dannnggg!

gusty scaffold
#

I have to leave for a while...

thick elk
#

Use it for soldering / 3d printer / things like that.

umbral knot
#

my bedroom also doesn't have good ac so with a pc in there it gets unbearably hot in the summer

wheat plume
#

I manually installed the drivers

#

AND IT LAUNCHES THIS SHIT once done the install

halcyon moss
#

dont log in

wheat plume
#

it wont lemme use it without login .-. Time to quit it

old marlin
#

geforce experience is the devil

wheat plume
#

Do I need to reboot after the install?

old marlin
#

no

wheat plume

oook

#

Wootility install time

#

Done :D

#

Om

#

What tf

#

Help ;_;

reef patrol
#

go into troubleshooting?

wheat plume
#

I did

#

Won't lemme do anything cause I'm not connected to a network

#

It just tells me that I haven't chosen to connect to one and that's the only issues it shows

misty saffron
#

those are.. some interesting issues my isp has

wheat plume
#

O.o

#

You gone over the fair usage policy limit?

misty saffron
#

we don't have that

#

hahahahahahahahah

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

Idk wtf to do .-.

#

Guess it's reinstall time and not install that update

reef patrol
#

Toe be faire neither does wess.

#

Plug it into a cabled connection. xD

wheat plume
#

Hah
Nice joke Mansen

#

You know my only option is mobile hotspot to get internet

reef patrol
#

I have suggested using an AP at least five times at this point πŸ˜„

wheat plume
#

I'll have better wifi next week

misty saffron
#

there we go

#

only took a call to tech support

umbral knot
vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

Waiting for all Windows updates to apply then I install the driver and st eam

vagrant elk
#

Meanwhile Linux comes rather updated out of the box so there's very few things to update.

wheat plume
#

Yep!

#

That my next install on the other drive

vagrant elk
#

New hard drive or SSD?

wheat plume
#

oh hey...

#

you can tell it not to install GFE

vagrant elk
#

Mhm! It's just really annoying sometimes.

wheat plume
#

HD Audio Driver?

crimson wigeon
#

Yes..?

misty saffron
#

oh

vagrant elk
#

For my GPU there are two versions (not Game Ready and Studio), one which has that option and one which automatically installs GeForce Experience without asking.

misty saffron
#

intellicode actually works

vagrant elk
#

HD Audio is basically just a driver for monitor audio as far as I can tell. I've never used it.

wheat plume
#

that scared tf out of mee

vagrant elk
#

Screen flicker?

wheat plume
#

I forgot the screen flashes and turns black for a few moments when the driver is installed

vagrant elk
#

I've never had that happen on Linux but Windows seems to do that every single time I update the driver.

wheat plume
#

yeah

#

Linux applies the driver on next reboot

#

iirc

vagrant elk
#

Here's a fun key combination for Windows in case you ever have graphics driver issues. Do Windows + Control + Shift + B. I've never had to use it before but some say it's useful.

wheat plume
#

O.o I see

vagrant elk
#

Windows + Shift + S if you want a screenshot as well. Just Control + V to paste it somewhere.

wheat plume
#

Yep

#

I assign print screen key to the screenshot bar

#

firefox got fucked during drive install

#

had to restart it.... I guess GPU acceleration is on by default

vagrant elk
#

I turn GPU acceleration off for everything. I've had a bad experience with it in most programs.

#

Then again I am an extremely unlucky individual so there's that.

wheat plume
#

Time to install Steam :D

#

RIP Start menu, it no wanna open

#

it do that sometimes ;-;

vagrant elk
#

I had it completely break shortly after I setup the administrator account and requiring a password for everything to run as administrator. I had to restart to fix it.

#

Logging out and logging in didn't fix it for some reason.

fair gull
wheat plume
#

I love the new Library page <3

#

now got to go through the Library and make sure it knows they are all installed

vagrant elk
#

Is that new as of today or is that a beta version? Mine still looks old.

wheat plume
#

beta

#

its so wonderful

#

oh, got to make D: the default library

vagrant elk

I've been a part of the internet for too long. I read D: and instantly thought of the face, not the drive.

Oh.... wtf?

fair gull

classic linux errors

wheat plume

yes

fair gull

that game

wheat plume

oohh
I can just launch BFV and thatll install Origin for me

#

fair gull

thats been a thing since forever tho

and its not origin anymore

wheat plume
#

yeah, I know
I just tried it manually and it no do

wheat plume
fair gull

its ea-app now

wheat plume

🀒 ew

vagrant elk

Wait life is strange released a third game in the series?

wheat plume

origin is much better name

fair gull
#

origin isnt very oiriginal

#

unlike ea-app

vagrant elk
#

At least it isn't Ubisoft Connect.

#

Ubisoft Connect makes it sound like you're connecting it to your phone or something but it's their launcher.

fair gull
#

oh noe

wheat plume
#

origin likes to disappear a lot

fair gull
#

the download manager did turn to shit tho

vagrant elk
#

Life is Strange True Colors seems interesting. The new main character is kind of cute too.

#

Borderline impossible to not call her cute.

wheat plume

she is :D

#

O.o

You can swap between BF1 and BFV from ingame

#

Thats really neat

Wait, im not logged into Origin launcher yet but it still logged me into the game

They did but there have been numerous workarounds found since.

There's a mining program that unlocked them to about 80% mining power but I may have that value slightly wrong.

#

I still have a 1060 6GB so yeah, a 3060 should last quite a while.

#

There are some programs that take out the difficulty and are basically just one click but I don't know how good they are.

#

Not sure if it lets you pick the mining pool but the GUI is extremely basic. Enter a wallet address and hit "start mining", that's basically it.

wheat plume

Hmm
Should I try btrfs? On my next Linux install

thick elk
#

What would be your reason for using btrfs

wheat plume
#

Easy backups

thick elk
#

If you don't plan to use a storage array or actively use COW there are better options.

#

shadow copies are not backup's per se but they can be really great

wheat plume
#

Timeshift had a new update to allow it auto backup before updates
And make an entry on grub just incase to boot back to before the update

thick elk
#

Alternatively if you have plenty of ram ZFS is still more mature than btrfs

wheat plume
#

How much ram is plenty in this case?

#

Yeah.... Timeshift also calls them snapshots

thick elk
#

I don't know exactly but zfs uses quite a bit of ram, so if you are often at the last gig or 2 of ram it may not be the best option.

wheat plume
#

I have 16gb

#

And use up to 12gb when playing Minecraft and have YouTube and discord open also

thick elk
#

oh scrap the memory thing, that's mostly about deduplication / performance for multi-disk arrays, probably the same on btrfs.

#

Just remembered old sort of standard knowledge of using 1gb per tb but it's not really that accurate most uses.

#

As for snapshot's vs backups, snapshot protect you against a subset of what backups protect you from, but are easier to recover.
I would not call them useless, they just won't help you with hardware failure, if however accidentally you do # rm -r * on / it's still very much a great thing to have.

crisp granite
#

today on the "WTF" show

#

I just bought a bunch of apple products because...might as well, and I need something portable

#

shockingly wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be

#

also got a free pair of airpods included with my iPad

#

bought an iPad air, 64gb storage and wifi, the keyboard folio, apple pencil and gratis airpods because...gratis...not even $1300 CAD all in 🀨

#

I'm actually impressed

#

I thought I'd be spending that much on the iPad alone

thick elk
#

The iPad Air is not that extreme in terms of pricing. Still, I personally would never buy it.

vagrant elk
#

Meanwhile if I had $1300 to spend it would be a Thinkpad T430.

crisp granite
#

well, yes

#

but also...iPads are tiny, and that's kinda what I need

#

something super portable

#

only bummer is that I couldn't get the French Canadian ISO layout for the keyboard, had to go with US ANSI

#

:(

thick elk
#

Every time I tried to use one it has been an excersize in frustration. Even moving files around between devices kind of a pain

#

on android I have kde connect, just transfering over usb, usb-otg, micro-sd. Neither of those work on iPad

crisp granite
#

Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

#

it was getting that or an iPad pro, which was too expensive for my tastes

thick elk
#

Last time I wanted something more portable I ended up with a cheap chuwi tablet-pc, actually not bad. Sure it's not the highest quality, lightest, nor is it fast but it does the job.

#

Probably better productively than an android tablet + keyboard which was my other option.

#

In case you are wondering, yes btw.

wheat plume

And os prober isn't finding it either

thick elk

maybe you can fix it with grub os-prober

#

wheat plume
#

Nope

thick elk
#

Windows can restore / repair the bootloader via it's iso I think

wheat plume
#

Ooohh
Can it?

crimson wigeon
#

Sounds like you did something real real stupid, like nuke EFI system partition

crisp granite
wheat plume
#

I'll try that once I finish this download

wheat plume

crisp granite

wheat plume

I need Windows too for college documents and software sometimes
And I needed it for work

crisp granite
#

emulating is a no

wheat plume
#

I hope that the iso can fix the bootloader
Cause I can't be assed to try anything else

crimson wigeon
#

How about not nuking it in the first place

wheat plume
#

I wanted to reinstall
It was out dated and also had some issues with drivers

thick elk
#

I rarely use my windows install but I just have it on a separate SSD.
I may just move it down to a smaller sata one and claim the tb nvme one for actually use, however I don't really need more storage right now.

wheat plume
#

Yeah
I have two SSDs

#

Well
3
But ones for storage only
No OS

thick elk
#

Having windows contained on it's own disk / partition table helps a lot here.

#

Windows can do what it wants and you just boot into it via grub which can probe it just fine.

crimson wigeon
#

Doesn't really need much probing anyway since you can just start bootmgr.efi, or is it bootmgfw.efi

#

(which is what Grub does anyway I bet)

thick elk
#

Most likely, still having one command with os-prober doesn't require you to bother with ti.

reef patrol
#

Be vevy qwuiet. We're burning wabits.

thick elk
#

It's quite funny how Intel is basically nuking their own AVX 512 by using little cores that don't support it.

crimson wigeon
#

Why would you want to run such instructions on the schmall cores?

ashen spindle
#

you could emulate it instead of not having it at all

thick elk
#

There is no need for these instructions to run fast on the small cores, however if a process that calls on them crashes that's not nice.

ashen spindle
#

because next core will have it again

#

so we get it on consumer, then a gen where its removed, then its back

#

its just a mess

crimson wigeon
#

Wouldn't such an instruction cause the thread to get punted over to chonk cores?

ashen spindle
#

it's disabled in big cores

crimson wigeon
#

oh.

ashen spindle
#

both cores need to support all instructions

crimson wigeon
#

That's stupid

thick elk
#

It's just a clusterfuck to deal with on a process level otherwise

crimson wigeon
#

Then again so is AVX512

thick elk
#

Just in general segmenting instruction sets is stupid.
It's basically makes sure they are only used in certain specific workloads.

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

yeah uh, I happily say I have no clue about taht, I can tell 512 on consumer chips is dumb waste of area

#

but not anything beyond that lel

astral haven
#

avx512 consumes no area

#

as soon as you have sufficient bandwidth and fpu/ipu counts it's free

ashen spindle
#

idk if you are serious or if that's sarcasm from the crossed out lines

astral haven
#

It's a fact that is very unpopular so I'm whispering it

ashen spindle
#

how is it not taking up area when you need dedicated area for it though?

astral haven
#

There is only "dedicated area" on Skylake and that "dedicated area" is an extra fpu that also is used for avx2

crisp granite
#

Initial impressions of apple ecosystem stuff as a whole...I think I might become an apple shill

astral haven
crisp granite
#

This stuff works...so easily

ashen spindle
#

so in skylake it takes like 10% die area just for the avx512 part, does that meant afterwards it's being integrated into other parts akin to RT units in rdna2 that barely need extra area compared to nvidia?

#

I can't find an ice lake die shot like this anywhere sadly

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

hm that still sounds like not including it would open possible better design choices to improve other instructions

astral haven
#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it's about core width, you just need to meet the minimum then you are good to go

#

Skylake is 3 wide by default and avx 512 requires 4

#

Ice lake is 4 wide by default already

#

And rocket lake is 6 wide

#

The better your ooe the more width helps outside of avx
Avx just allows you to get the ooe parallelization hardcoded pretty much

#

Actually tho come to think of it it does add a number of 4096 bit registers

#

Oh no

#

+16 512b registers

young pecan
reef patrol
#

Same as your CPU.

#

I use MX2 because it's locally available.

#

Why would that be an issue? They're not conductive. And unlike the CPU you need to cover the entire die.

young pecan
#

Could do anything, even liquid metal.

reef patrol
#

By the time you've scraped it out to cover the entire surface, it's too thin to run anywhere.

young pecan
#

You just need to be VERY careful and precise.

reef patrol
#

And use a nail polish sealer that has the right stuff.

young pecan
#

Dot on the die method doesn’t work for GPUs, you gotta have it covered thinly and extremely accurately.

reef patrol
#

Yep. Something like this.

#

Like uh... buttercream on a cake. πŸ˜„

astral haven
#

Meh

#

Just use whatever it really doesn't matter much on ambient

fair gull
#

doesnt really matter

#

iirc gamersnexus did a test of spread vs a few other types and they were all within like .5℃

young pecan
#

Dies in general require a much more accurate and thin layer.

fair gull
#

thats what u say

#

has anyone ever tried

reef patrol
#

Yes.

#

Direct die CPU also needs the same treatment or some cores will have terrible temps.

astral haven
#

That's absolutely untrue, there is no practical difference as evidenced by laptops

reef patrol
#

If your dies on a laptop only cover the center, you're going to hate the temps.

#

That's a objective fact.

astral haven
#

That's not an "uneven coating"

reef patrol
#

Ah yes - Moving those goalposts.

astral haven
young pecan
#

I mean... so long as the die is fully covered and has attached thermal transfer then it should be fine, no?

reef patrol
#

Yes.

young pecan
#

Just more consistent if the paste is spread on a die.

astral haven
#

As long as there is sufficient paste it's fine

reef patrol
#

Spreading it out manually is what ensures full coverage as opposed to gambling on pressure doing it for you.

young pecan
#

I’ve seen some trippy shit, idk how one fucks up thermal paste, but goddamn it happens.

reef patrol
#

Visual confirmation is the citation you need.

young pecan
# astral haven [citation needed]

Basic physics, dude. If you apply pressure to thermal paste like an idiot (screwing the cooler down in a spare, for example), it can very slightly fuck up the spread.

#

Though anyone experienced enough to be doing it can probably not fuck up.

reef patrol
#

Doing the ole dot is most likely going to suck on a traditional GPU die. Cause it won't spread evenly over the die, only in a pancake pattern. So now half of the die isn't covered.

astral haven
young pecan
#

Even with that much force you can fuck up the spread if you screw it down wrong.

#

This was proven by GN.

astral haven
#

What

young pecan
#

No idea when this vid was exactly, but it was around the original TR days.

astral haven
#

Threadripper is not direct die

young pecan
#

The spread patterns then they had a brief stint into laptops.

#

Turns out cross tightening is the most consistent (obvs), and square can in certain circumstances, do weird spread.

reef patrol
#

Anyhow - If you enjoy risking having to take apart a GPU because you fucked up the thermal spread due to 5 seconds of laziness. By all means. I'll continue to manually spread it evenly across the die to avoid ever having to wonder.

young pecan
#

Y’know, and for liquid metal as well.

#

Only the most stupid of people does pressure on liquid metal.

astral haven
young pecan
#

Thank fuck it’s uncommon.

astral haven
#

Oops wrong reply

young pecan
#

Ngl liquid metal is great.

astral haven
#

But yea liquid metal isn't about pressure it's about surface tension

#

You don't spread the lm you are just wetting the surface

#

Holey smokes that was tough to film

reef patrol
#

You absolute ARE spreading it though xD

young pecan
#

young pecan
#

Smh... LUL

astral haven
#

But yea the holy grail is in die microfluidic cooling

young pecan
#

Actually why don't we do that?

astral haven
#

Cause microfluidics is hard

young pecan
#

It's established we can make 3D processing dies, running a little tiny heatpipe through it would be easily possible.

astral haven
#

And doing it inside a CPU is even harder

young pecan
#

Expensive, but possible.

#

The tech isn't limiting anything there.

astral haven
#

The problem is the lithography of the microfluidics and the liquid used

#

You can't actually use water :/

#

Not without adding a diffusion barrier

#

Which could break down if it's too thin and reduce thermal transfer if it's too thick

young pecan
#

Ahh.

astral haven
#

Tsmc and AMD are working on it literally now tho

young pecan
#

Will be interesting if it works.

astral haven

Tsmc already announced rnd on it and AMD has had parents for years
