Meanwhile my printer cable printer doesn't do that so I can use any random cartridge that fits.

young pecan
#

It’s called an SLA, buddy. You can’t.

#

I wish.

timid chasm
#

Oh you work for people

young pecan
#

SLAs are both great and the bane of my existence.

timid chasm
#

drop them as an employer

young pecan
#

I don’t work for any one person. I freelance.

timid chasm
#

then that's on you 100% lol

young pecan
#

Someone wants you to come in and fix some stupid BS.

earnest jay
#

Most if not all printer brands block non-same-brand cartridges, as the cartridges are where the golden profit is, not in the printer sales. Mew_Giggle

young pecan
#

If it’s a printer? 80% chance HP fucked something up.

#

The cheese melts in the microwave.
The printer melts in the HP.

timid chasm
#

Lexmark for me from now on. I've had like 1/100th the issues and replaced the toner about the same

vagrant elk
#

I love the idea of that printer where you just fill it with ink but I feel like they have something they are hiding. You know, a fatal flaw where it breaks after 2 years "unintentionally" or stops working after 75,000 pages are printed like some companies do.

young pecan
#

M8, of course.

#

But what’re you, random fuck off person, gonna do? NOTHING.

#

We have 0 power here at all.

#

Just have to suffer the stupid bullshit because some rich assholes decided that was key.

vagrant elk
#

This is why I apply for jobs online where I don't have to deal with printers.

timid chasm
#

But what do you expect when printers like that can be bought for like 40 bucks

#

sometimes less

young pecan
#

Same shit happened here.

#

Cheap does NOT mean bad, not in all cases.

timid chasm
#

no but it definitely does with printers

#

every cheap printer is dog shit

earnest jay
#

planned obsolescence is the money making dream come true. 😆

young pecan
#

Yes, by design.

#

That’s the point.

vagrant elk
# timid chasm every cheap printer is dog shit

Do you have any idea how many business printers are setup in the firmware to stop working after 150,000 pages are printed? The only way to make them work again is to have someone reverse engineer it and send it a reset signal for that counter.

young pecan
#

Or.

vagrant elk
#

Those programs only exist for old printers, never new ones.

young pecan
#

Or you rip the firmware chip out and replace it.

#

That also works.

timid chasm
#

that sounds like some serious conspiracy level shit

young pecan
#

It’s actually true, though.

reef patrol
#

Never seen that on a laser printer personally.

timid chasm
#

^

#

inkjet for sure

#

laser printers are god

young pecan
vagrant elk
#

Not a conspiracy. Printers also have tracking features. Every single printer made in 2021 tracks the prints with an ID of the printer, serial number and more.

reef patrol
#

On Inkjets... I have a feeling they'll just clog up well before 150k pages 😄

reef patrol
old marlin
vagrant elk
#

They are put on every single page and can be traced back to you but are done in a way that you can't physically see it.

vagrant elk
old marlin
#

like the HP M555

timid chasm
#

the more words I see the more tinfoil I hear

young pecan
#

Couple printers I was paid to have a look at were lasers that worked absolutely fine. Even pulling parts out and replacing them did nothing. Just the mainboard was fucked, and registering as fucked with new hardware for the same model.

#

I took the board, had the chip swapped with a chip from an identical model. Board works again.

#

The firmware literally kills the printer for reasons.

earnest jay
#

Unfortunately the whole telling a printer by its printed paper is old news. 😆

young pecan
#

No damage beyond heaps of use to the board in question, worked fine.

#

Just replacing one single chip on the board itself made it work again.

#

And that board was turning on, just giving errors and refusing to print paper. Weirdly enough replacing the firmware managed to make it start up again.

#

For something reporting a hardware failure it’s awfully weird that replacing a firmware chip magically fixes it.

#

Unless... that was intentional.

#

Not like it’s an unknown problem.

earnest jay
#

Of course intentional, no money of new sales otherwise. Mew_Giggle

vagrant elk
young pecan
#

Had to grab a new printer, take the board out, take the chip off, and place it onto the 'broken' board.

#

The only thing that changed was one chip swap from a donor board out of a brand new printer.

#

I imagine if you had contacts in China you could probably find chips.

old marlin
#

@fair gull intel might actually be cheaper for me MONKERS

fair gull
#

?

old marlin
#

comes down to an epyc rome 7453 or a xeon gold 5320

fair gull
#

lol

old marlin
#

ah

#

for the huge ass NAS

#

which needs a ton of pcie lanes

#

the xeon is a bit cheaper

#

and you loose out on 4 threads

fair gull
#

id go for intel anyway

#

cause in my experience really heavy disk load is just habdled better by intel

#

at least on huge raid arrays

old marlin
#

would prob end up being ZFS

#

so that would be the consideration

vagrant elk
#

Am I dumb or does eighth look weird?

old marlin
#

eighth?

vagrant elk
#

It's the proper spelling but it looks wrong.

#

Yeah I'm just overthinking stupid stuff again. Carry on.

old marlin
#

there aren't a lot of coolers available for socket 4189

earnest jay
#

Liquid cooling, done. Mew_Giggle

#

Have it float in liquid is what I mean.

old marlin
#

with the amount of corrosives that would slowly drift in that liquid it seems like a terrible idea

fair gull
#

in general ud fuck the server hardware for almost ever

earnest jay
#

Aren't there non-corrosive liquids out there for such use?

old marlin
fair gull
#

u still get small metal particulate from bearings and such

old marlin
#

which means we have low amounts of corrosives in the air

#

with an air cooler those go through the system once

fair gull
#

wait so

old marlin
#

with liquid cooling they can accumulate

earnest jay
fair gull
#

if i work at ur place i could just corrode my brain away slowly over multiple years

old marlin
#

nice

earnest jay
fair gull
#

yama sign me up

old marlin
#

you serious?

#

boss sits right besides me, if you want to come over for a few days I can set it up in 5 minutes

fair gull
#

na like i said i cant just take time off rn

old marlin
#

offer will stand

#

just hmu whenever you feel like it

fair gull
#

also pls never put a hand in for some dumbo like me

old marlin
#

we all are dumbos

#

I'm always dumbo

ashen spindle
#

blobhyperthinkfast alder lake coming in september? though I guess they are just getting ready earlier than release more likely

earnest jay
#

By the way, for a NAS, would a Thread Ripper work? As I do know there are mounts for TR4 that are easy to come by.

fair gull
#

technically any cpu will work

earnest jay
#

That's true.

fair gull
#

the requirements come from disk amoumt

#

and in case applicable the required pci lanes like in yamas case

earnest jay
#

Ahh, and TR probably supports less than server CPUs.

old marlin
#

they might just include the mounting hardware

old marlin
#

considering that I also need 3 HBA cards as well as some kind of networking card TR is sadly not an option

earnest jay
#

Fair enough.

fair gull
#

gt710 h4 for example

old marlin
#

there is absolutely no PCIE slot to plug it into

fair gull
#

oh

#

well

old marlin
#

unless I wanna reroute an m.2 slot or some bs

wheat plume
#

I love this shirt :')

young pecan
#

Just mineral oil cool your NAS, 4head.

earnest jay
young pecan
#

Prolly.

#

It looks wack.

#

Works absolute wonders, tho.

earnest jay
#

Yeah, I've seen videos of it being done, but apparently takes days to fully clean/remove the oil. Mew_Giggle

wheat plume
#

I found a script to change the color of the Papirus folder icons

#

so many colors to pick :D

young pecan
#

That shit doesn’t come off.

earnest jay
#

I myself am just sticking to air cooling my CPUs, though was looking at an AiO for a new PC build. Mew_Giggle

young pecan
#

Grab an AIO, tbh.

#

@earnest jay Also if you’re brave grab some liquid metal for the IHS.

halcyon moss
#

what kind of monsterus nas are you guys building? O_o

earnest jay
young pecan
#

Eh.

#

AIO is better.

#

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Noctua.

#

But AIOs are just... mmmmm.

earnest jay
earnest jay
halcyon moss
#

aircooling is just sooooo much easier

earnest jay
#

Eh, AIOs are also pretty dang easy now'a'days.

young pecan
#

@earnest jay Yes.

#

Liquid metal + AIO of a decent kind = damn good performance

#

It’s water, so you’re limited on the thermal transfer from the fins, but it’s not only better but also quieter than an Noctua.

#

And in all honestly they’re equal effort.

#

One requires... 8 more screws.

#

:O

earnest jay
#

I just remember a video from Gamers Nexus, which is now reasonably old, that a high end Noctua performed better than some of the higher end 360mm AIOs.

young pecan
#

Being the dude that’s built, torn apart, bastardised, and modded dozens of computers at this stage I can confirm that even doing it regularly an AIO is still pretty easy. Cleaning thermal paste off and reapplying it takes longer.

#

As for that old GN video? Kinda sorta.

#

Running a Noctua big fuck off cooler full bore gives better performance, but it’s audible.

#

Run a 2 or 3 fan AIO and it’ll make no noise and be a little better.

earnest jay
#

I bet it being audible, though a terribly done AIO can be a loud thing as well. Mew_Giggle

ashen spindle
#

I like noctua because I know I can just use it forever because they’ll gladly send you brackets for new sockets so I’ll be able to use mine even if I jump to AM5, lga1700 etc.

young pecan
#

shrugs Any reputable AIO will work for ages and not die.

ashen spindle
#

Yes but not fit on every new platform

earnest jay
#

Also, a Noctua NH-D15S is cheaper than an AIO. Mew_Giggle

young pecan
#

shrugs Do you want performance or performance and silence?

#

If it needs to shut the fuck up, get an AIO.

#

Otherwise the benefits will only be had from hard overclocking.

earnest jay
#

I mainly play with headphones on, and plan on using case fans as well.

young pecan
#

Ok?

#

Are they open backs or closed backs?

earnest jay
#

Closed back headphones.

young pecan
#

Ouch. F moment there.

#

I mean hey, in that case just get fuckin’ anything and call it a day.

earnest jay
#

Hehehe.

#

I'm not an audiophile so I don't care about open vs closed or what have you. 😆

young pecan
#

You don’t need to go hard in to care.

#

Opens are just so much nicer.

#

Makes everything feel more roomy and open, like you’re in a concert hall with a good pair.

earnest jay
#

Eh, don't really care for all that. Mew_Giggle

young pecan
#

Idk man. I tried my old pair of closed backs. Audio quality differences aside they felt awful to actually use.

#

Too punchy even after EQ.

#

All stuffy and muddy.

#

:(

earnest jay
#

Fair enough.

young pecan
#

Tbh tho, while open backs are nice there ain’t much that beats a nice quality pair.

#

My HD800S have massive ear cups, I wish everything had massive ear cups. :(

#

Bring massive ear cups to literally all the things. They’re so plushy.

#

Comfort 100.

earnest jay
#

I myself prefer to isolate myself from the noise around me, and I've heard closed are better at that than open.

young pecan
#

shrugs That’s not really a good description of the trade off.

earnest jay
#

True, but that's for me good enough. 😆

young pecan
#

Open backs are like listening to a real electric guitar. Closed backs are like listening to that one kid with his air guitar.

#

Yes, one isolates noise, but goddamn that is not a worthwhile sacrifice if you can get away with it.

#

If you can quiet the environment around you to tolerable levels it’s a no brainer.

halcyon moss
#

calm down aeon

#

not everyone is like you, ppl can like other things

young pecan
#

But like... if there’s ANY noise it gets through opens.

#

The huge downside. :(

#

Especially keyboards.

#

And forget taking them anywhere outside. That there does not work.

young pecan
#

M8, you know it.

#

It’s the late hours, I ramble at this time.

earnest jay
#

Hehehe, though your rambling has been good for a laugh, I had to keep finding ways of telling you I'm not really bothered that closed don't sound as good as open. Mew_Giggle

#

Besides, I'm fine with the sound that comes out of my headphones, especially because even though they aren't noise cancelling, they still cancel quite a lot of of outside noise and sound, which is a blessing for me. 🙂

halcyon moss
#

27" with 4k and 150% scaling is quite nice

earnest jay
#

I bet, though I'm a 1440p PC gamer myself.

halcyon moss
#

this is pure fr work 🙂
at home i have a 1440p144 screen

earnest jay
#

Ahh, what do you do for work? And I have a 1440p144 as well, but getting a new monitor because my current one is showing age.

halcyon moss

earnest jay
#

Ahh, fair enough.

young pecan
#

I can’t even think right. My filter is long gone.

#

Filtern’t

earnest jay

For me it's only 15:05.

Though I wish it was 2 hours later, as then my work has ended for the day. Mew_Giggle

old marlin

crimson wigeon

German software engineering kekw

wheat plume
crimson wigeon
#

But I dunno Tumbleweed works good for me

wheat plume
#

I love their naming schemes :')

#

Leap for jumping to each new release
and Tumbleweed cause its a rolling distro :')

young pecan
#

Not really related, but tumbleweed are a fucking terrifying plant.

#

Easily top 30 for super dangerous nature stuff that humanity has to deal with that can’t be classed as a natural disaster.

wheat plume
#

o.O

young pecan
#

Yee.

#

They spread like nothing else, burst into flames with no issues whatsoever, and they clump since they’re spiky.

#

There are videos of tens of thousands of tumbleweed destroying entire crop fields and towns because everything catches on fire.

wheat plume
#

oh gosh :O

young pecan
#

They’re also insanely difficult to remove since they clump and are basically a rolling rose bush, which means the workers get cut super easily which can lead to infection.

#

Since they grow so fast there’s also not really a way to kill them all off.

#

Tumbleweed are actually scary.

wheat plume
#

gosh damn :/

old marlin
#

don't touch it

#

it forgot how network interfaces work

wheat plume
#

I wanna try Fedora someday

#

o?

#

My computer did that a few days ago

old marlin
#

I tried rebooting already

young pecan
#

Is that worse or better than when Windows renames all desktop icons to the same thing?

old marlin
young pecan
#

Ah.

#

That does kinda suck.

#

But... just reconfigure it...?

#

Or is the OS awful?

old marlin
#

I wish I knew how that worked

young pecan
#

Is it standard Windows?

old marlin
#

no

#

cli linux

young pecan
#

Or some kind of sideways fucked Linux distro...?

#

Normal Linux? Debian?

old marlin
#

which also forgot the network config

#

so now I have port 4-7

halcyon moss
#

fedora, aka red hat, is OG linux

old marlin
#

instead of 0-3

young pecan
#

Right, right... and what’s this specifically doing?

old marlin
#

not networking

young pecan
#

No I mean what’s the server for?

old marlin
#

and the network configuration tools don't work

old marlin
young pecan
#

...

old marlin
#

not my choice of OS

young pecan
#

And it’s not a Proxmox server for... reasons?

old marlin
#

proxmox server = VM host

#

not storage

young pecan
#

Which you can attach storage to since it’s a native function?

#

Proxmox is kinda good at that, it’s got some nifty tools.

old marlin
#

it is one of those attached storages

young pecan
#

How tf did it lose functionality and why are you running Linux on it?

old marlin
#

because it is opensuse leap

#

that is the problem

young pecan
#

Y’know what?

old marlin
#

I would have put an ubuntu server on it

young pecan
#

Better you than me.

#

Ok ok wait wait wait.

#

No.

#

No no wait.

#

Ok.

#

So.

halcyon moss
#

ubuntu to rule them all

young pecan
#

You have a VM host which has an external storage bank to store the VMs?

#

Which is in an entirely different server?

#

Or am I confused? I gotta be confused here.

#

@old marlin ???

old marlin
#

no

#

that is basically correct

#

helps with scalability

#

and redundancy

#

since you don't need the one uberserver 3000 that does everything

#

but instead can chuck DL380 G8s at the problem

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah if I wanted a Suse for server I would probably learn MicroOS
Leap just doesn't scream "use me on your server!" to me...
Many people also say YaST is great but I think it's pretty crap

old marlin
#

same

#

ex-colleague set that one up

#

besides some other questionable decisions

young pecan
#

I’m just confused as to why you wouldn’t run proxmox for the VM cluster itself and attach more basic storage solutions. Do you really need something that scales like that?

#

I like to pretend I actually have a valid use for a 16 core game server, but even I’ll admit it’s insane overkill for my needs.

#

Actually proper mass scalable VM solution? What’re you even doing that requires something so robust?

misty saffron
#

shitting on stack is a lifestyle

old marlin
#

like some shitty qnap or wdym

young pecan
#

shrugs Presumably this is in a rack, yeah?

old marlin
#

yes

#

we get dl380 g8s cheaper than diskshelves

young pecan
#

A lot of decent cases will be able to support enough drives for a fairly redundant system.

#

Do you need more than 100TB raw?

old marlin
#

not quite

#

I mean

young pecan
#

And so the problem is...?

old marlin
#

the DL380 G8 does 8-16 2.5" drives

#

that is not the problem

young pecan
#

Even for SSDs you can just double sided tape them together.

old marlin
#

we need more than 1 though

young pecan
#

Enough SATA drives will give you good speed and reliability.

#

I still see no issue.

old marlin
#

buying raid controllers is more expensive than dl380 g8s

#

even buying HBAs

#

for IT mode

young pecan
#

shrugs Comes with more moving parts that fail.

old marlin
#

so we could do like 10+ drives in ZFS

old marlin
young pecan
#

And I’ll be honest, I do not believe in the slightest that you need a system this robust.

old marlin
#

besides, don't think I have seen any of the servers have a single fail

young pecan
#

I’m 99% sure there are maybe a handful of people in this entire server that need such a system.

old marlin
#

or a few dozen k

#

depending on the VM

young pecan
#

How so? Hosting stuff for people?

old marlin
young pecan
#

Ah, that do be making sense.

old marlin
#

machine server crashes and the parts in the machine are garbage

#

we had a blackout today

#

caused quite some damage

#

because some pumps were not running

#

and we had a spillover

young pecan
#

Right, right. Now my only question is if you’re running an electroplating company how did a blackout kill off your business?

old marlin
#

not a home setup obv

young pecan
#

Iirc that kind of operation wants some robust power storage and delivery to do emergency shutoffs.

old marlin
#

build a grid storage size USP?

ashen spindle

Just enough to not damage shit.

old marlin
#

not happening

#

draws too much power

young pecan

Srs? What for the pumps and shit?

old marlin
#

well

#

was a total blackout

young pecan
#

The whole assembly I heavily doubt you could UPS it.

old marlin
#

got basically no UPS for the whole machines

young pecan
#

But just the pumps to prevent spillover? Valuable.

old marlin
#

I didn't design the thing peepoShrug

young pecan
#

Spillover sucks. :/

old marlin
#

well

#

nothing catastrophal

young pecan
#

Well, by definition is doesn’t suck.

old marlin
#

still costs money

young pecan
#

Kinda sucks tho.

#

Just pull a Saturn V, m8.

#

Run everything against multiple systems.

#

Fuck, I wish life was that easy.

old marlin
#

lol

#

I mean

young pecan
#

Then again that was a super insanely complex system.

old marlin
#

usually that would be a solution

#

double breakers etc

young pecan
#

Everything right up until computing needs to take place.

#

That’s always an annoying thing to solve.

#

As far as the server though? Power shut off and yeeted the network config?

old marlin
#

ye

#

was too long on some of the UPS

#

so some crashed

young pecan
#

No config backup?

old marlin
#

you wish

young pecan
#

...

#

Config is like nothing in space.

#

Why not?

old marlin
#

ik

#

we have backups of the other ones

young pecan
#

Wot

old marlin
#

that ex-colleague is the problem

young pecan
#

And no backup of the basic networking?

#

The fuck happened when designing it?

old marlin
#

idk

#

wasn't my idea

young pecan
#

Ball got dropped hard.

#

Idk how anyone actually doesn’t just do those kinds of backups.

#

Just...

ashen spindle

cant drop what nobody picked up to begin with WeSmart

young pecan

Fucking backup everything.

old marlin
#

idk how someone delays development of hardware for over 2 years

#

he managed to do so though

young pecan
#

WOT?! xD

#

...

#

2 years of no development at all?

old marlin
#

well

#

ther was development

ashen spindle
#

wait so you're working for intel manufacturing?

young pecan
old marlin

yes

young pecan

Thank fuck.

ashen spindle
#

is he yeeted or did he leave to another company to ~~earn ~~steal even more?

young pecan
old marlin
#

my boss told him that he will get yeeted

#

and he then left himself

young pecan
#

Anyone with that little brain power isn’t contributing much to anything important.

#

Don’t do shit for 2 years and somehow fuck up basic maintenance and safety.

#

How even?

#

DIDN’T EVEN BACKUP BASIC CONFIG.

#

sad mental pain noises

old marlin
#

The thing is

He would have 3 free months of paid offtime essentially

#

Instead he went himself

ashen spindle
#

well, maybe he thought it would look better for his next job interview

reef patrol
#

Well that's a new one.

#

Windows Gamepass games are locked down so tight, I literally cannot take ownership of the game's .exe files.

misty saffron
#

you can use a kernel driver to unlock

reef patrol
#

Gesundheit

halcyon moss
reef patrol
#

Can't argue with 9 months for free though.

#

Just trying to break through the initial "we don't want you to access the game folder" stuff for now though 😄

#

I can take over and copy everything but the .exe files.

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah, just complain to the game devs that they should enable it then you get the enable mods button which should give you full control

halcyon moss
#

Still can't believe halo remaster is that many gb.

crimson wigeon
#

Alternatively if you can pull out all the files you can probably register it in development mode for full access

#

That may or may not be a bit more locked down nowadays..

reef patrol
#

Can't touch the .exe files as I mentioned.

#

Windows won't let me take over ownership or anything.

crimson wigeon
#

Because UWP .exes aren't meant to be run directly like that (even wrapped win32s!)

reef patrol
#

It's not just the game app either. It's even the UnityCrashHandler .exe xD

reef patrol
crimson wigeon
#

Probably part of the reasons why people rejected UWP in the first place heh

reef patrol
#

I would be very curious to see if replacing the non-existent .exe files with cracked ones from a scene release would work.

Purely for science of course. Not like I mind launching the game through the Xbox app at all, or that I couldn't just buy it outright on Steam or Epixx.

crimson wigeon
#

I wouldn't be surprised if it worked..
Oh interesting seems like they've locked it down even tighter.. not even system is allowed to read the executables

reef patrol
#

Yep.

earnest jay
reef patrol
#

Well yes - That much has been obvious 😄

earnest jay
#

Hehe, and besides, the UWP games tend to run like shite, at least imho. Mew_Giggle

reef patrol
#

So far it would appear that at least as far as Humankind goes, the UWP build is older than the release one.

#

So I can't do a simple file swap.

crimson wigeon
#

That too, developers seem to treat the winstore versions of games poorly

earnest jay
#

I think that's because they are tied to the console version.

reef patrol
earnest jay
reef patrol
#

So they can send the same build to Steam and Microsoft at the same time, and the UWP build will be a week behind.

crimson wigeon
#

Not really, they do allow (and even recommend) plain old win32 builds nowadays

earnest jay
#

Good to hear.

misty saffron
#

anyone got ida handy?

I was seriously thinking about finally trying linux earlier today and this only pushes me a little closer to finally trying it

wheat plume
#

haha

#

Oh?

crimson wigeon
#

You've got nothing to lose but time!

crisp granite
#

ffs, even DLSS support on linux is a game-changer

#

metro exodus NATIVE release

wheat plume
crisp granite
#

shit, really should at some point...whenever I get another SSD because dual-booting is a fuck no

wheat plume
#

Iam dual booting

#

two SSDs though

crisp granite
#

I have two SSDs, both with windows files...

#

so, I need to secure a third SSD for linux to avoid scary drive fuckery

wheat plume
#

ahh right

#

Windows does mess with the other drive too... there is a parition window created on my Linux drive when it installed :/

crisp granite
#

well then

#

I guess a screwdriver can prevent that issue, have two separate sets of drives and swap em out as need be

wheat plume
#

I think

#

Hang on lemme check gparted

#

hmm, i guess not

#

It happened with Pop OS though

crimson wigeon
#

Look at you leaving 4.49 whole MiB unallocated

wheat plume
#

idk what that is

#

I just let ArcoLinux install itself

#

Well, I choose if I wanted a swap partition or swap file

#

Clearly, chose the swap partition

#

oh, it has a partition on my Library drive... wtf

crisp granite
#

better idea

#

I have an old laptop lying around

#

I'll just install popOS on that

crimson wigeon
#

Good idea

crisp granite
#

something to play around and familiarise myself with

wheat plume
#

Pop is great on laptops

crisp granite
#

and if I'm really sold on it, install on my main desktop

#

and...run a VM for windows games?

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

wheat plume
#

Keep in mind, Pop OS has a seperate ISO for if you need NVIDIA GPU drivers or not

crisp granite
#

yep

crimson wigeon
#

Can't wait to try that VM trick when I manage to get a new GPU

crisp granite
#

downloading the ISO without because this is going on an intel iGPU machine

wheat plume
#

good luck with anticheat though

#

Unless you spoof it so low level

crisp granite
#

I play singleplayer games, where there really isn't a need for it

crisp granite
#

I just hope stalker 2 and far cry 6 play nice with linux

#

or at least...run, even with terrible performance loss

wheat plume
#

Glorious Eggroll's version of Proton seems really great for most games compared to the Valve made one

#

OFC, it updates slower cause they need to first wait for the Valve version to release

crimson wigeon
#

GE updates way way faster bruh

crisp granite
#

heh

#

found a USB flashdrive

#

this sucker has my drone licence on it

#

fun

wheat plume
#

Use Ventoy

#

so you can keep any amount of ISOs on it and choose what to boot into

crisp granite
#

shit, I don't have any flash drives big enough for the ISO on hand

wheat plume
wheat plume
#

My Arco ISOs are really old.....

crimson wigeon
#

Well it doesn't have to be on flash storage

#

Like I don't have any thumb drives big enough and thus just use spinning rust in USB enclosure for the big bois

wheat plume
#

8GB drives should be enough for the ISO USB

crisp granite
#

I only have 2gb drives lying around

wheat plume
#

o.o

crisp granite
#

exactly

#

welp, I'll do some digging, see if I can find something larger

wheat plume
crimson wigeon
wheat plume
#

IT DOES????

#

Is that the same version that ElementaryOS Odin launched with recently?

#

I hope that's a VM issue

but with shaders I dont have things like that happen either lmao

mono JITed code has nops as jump targets everywhere

ashen spindle

Yeah but it also doesn’t concern me because I don’t care about the jitted Code really kek

#

And I either use Roslyn oder unity which is a customized mono anyway

#

Or gets turned into cpp

misty saffron
#

the above code is from unity mono

oh boy don’t get me started on il2cpp

ashen spindle
#

I doubt I’ll ever be in a place to care about optimisation and/or security of my unity code tbh

misty saffron
#

is your name nikita buyanov by any chance then?

ashen spindle
#

No because their issues is not something that needs JIT understanding or anything that low level lmao they just need to have it work differently

#

vagrant elk

Of course. All serious companies do. Windows is a joke and should be renamed to Winblows.

wheat plume

all serious companies....

My bank running Windows XP is crying in the background

vagrant elk
#

I have no idea why so many banks run windows XP

wheat plume

Yep .-.

vagrant elk
#

Same with healthcare industries. Just... Why?

wheat plume

id be less not ok with it, if it was windows 7

vagrant elk

At least the Canadian healthcare records of every citizen haven't been leaked like they were in Singapore.

wheat plume

and Ireland recently .-.

The HSE got hacked

vagrant elk

really fucking easily

I think that is partly to blame as to why my birth date is wrong on my covid vaccination certificate .-. No where will accept it cause that;s wrong information now

vagrant elk

I get to go through the joys of changing all of my legal documents twice and having a mandatory background check and fingerprints taken soon. Going to be a great experience that I'm sure won't screw me over in any way.

wheat plume

vagrant elk

I have to change them twice but I am only allowed to do one change at a time and each change takes like 6 months. It's absurd.

Some countries are even worse though so I guess I can't complain.

wheat plume

ooh..... Pixel 5A dropped

vagrant elk

Mhm! I saw one at Best Buy.

#

At least I think that was a 5a. Either than or it was the regular Pixel 5.

wheat plume

Same design as 4A

vagrant elk
#

Yeah, the design is kind of sleek.

wheat plume
#

I like that its made of plastic

vagrant elk
#

I saw an OLED Samsung 8k TV at Best Buy for $2500 CAD and I almost cried. The pictures were so beautiful but I couldn't afford it and don't have room for it.

wheat plume

woah

#

ooo 5A is metal!

#

Thats amazing

#

I miss metal phones

vagrant elk

Metal phones feel great every time.

wheat plume

I had a Xiaomi redmi note 5 pro

Then I had a Mix 2S

vagrant elk

I don't mind plastic phones if necessary but I prefer metal and if metal isn't possible then I'd generally prefer glass.

Unfortunately the PinePhone is plastic but I can take the back off and remove the battery which I like a lot.

wheat plume

misty saffron

you want to know the two reasons i know as much as i do?

wheat plume
#

also sure :P

misty saffron
#
  1. i am smart
  2. refer to reason #1
wheat plume
#

haha :P

vagrant elk
#

1.) I bought an Alienware PC which had a lot of software and hardware issues. I was too cheap to pay for tech support from a local computer store so I taught myself how to fix it. Took a few months but I got it fixed.

2.) I installed Linux when I started university and very quickly became red pilled from Luke Smith, Mental Outlaw and many others.

wheat plume
#

Ah yes.... Luke Smith the meme god

vagrant elk
#

The thing that started the spiral was Luke's video on LibreSSL and Void Linux.

wheat plume
#

My previous computer is Alienware... Lasted a really long time! But I think it would still be working if I replaced the CMOS battery

wheat plume
vagrant elk
#

Mine came out of the box with a memory leaking issue, BIOS issues, GPUs which had such unstable drivers that they crashed more than 10 times per second, an SD card slot that never worked properly and there was one other thing I can't remember.

wheat plume
#

O.o ooohh wow

vagrant elk
#

I didn't feel like paying to get it fixed so I figured it all out myself.

wheat plume
#

Oh, Void is not a fork either, ok! neat

vagrant elk
#

At one point I thought that DIMM was RAM and tried shopping like that. Slowly learned about SODIMM, DDR4 and all of that.

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

Ah...

vagrant elk
#

I was so red pilled at one point that runit and what is the other one called? S6? I thought they were too bloated and started using suckless init.

#

I do not recommend.

wheat plume
#

Imagine needing to patch your init system for basic functionality that the suckless devs think it doesnt need

#

recompiling it each time :O oh no

reef patrol

misty saffron
wheat plume
#

oh wow

vagrant elk
#

I fell for those websites once but it asked for me to pay for an anti-virus software that in reality was a rootkit. That was what got me into security of computers.

#

I only realized when I ran the program and instead of "cleaning" it said "injecting".

wheat plume
#

meanwhile, installs Valorant, that has anticheat that runs at ring 0

misty saffron

and you still install rootkit acs

Then if any malware hits, none of those files are impacted or changed.

you know the ac companies can be sued to hell if they are found stealing your private info, right

Young people are hilarious.

I went to our local retro (game) store. PS1, PC games on Disc, Comics etc...

While I was browsing PC games, someone actually came in asking for the "diskette PC games" - The storekeeper did a double take... she meant CDs.

LOL

misty saffron
#

ah yes, the cd diskettes

wheat plume

vagrant elk

Hm, my cassette can't seem to fit in this disk hole.

misty saffron
#

can you really find anything nice in this kind of stores?

wheat plume
#

Somehow, LGR can

reef patrol
#

This is not a random stuff store.

vagrant elk
#

That's if you have a local electronic recycler that sells them back to people in a refurbished condition. My area has lots of electronic recyclers but all of them send them off to be melted down for metals and such.

#

I seriously need to find out who's vehicle keeps doing this. The car alarm goes off every single morning at the same time for over an hour and then goes silent. It's rather annoying when you're awake.

vagrant elk

pale sigil

But his approach on the pandemic stuff lately bothers me

Which in not a fan of

vagrant elk
wheat plume
#

It's is default now in ArcoLinux too, so they have a package for it in their repos

vagrant elk

I seriously wish Windows had something similar instead of relying on websites like this.

wheat plume
#

Yeah... They are working on WinGet

#

Its a package manager CLI

#

I believe its available to try out already but it has basically nothing in the repo so far

#

I just love this theme though <3 Especially how each corner has its own color when resizing a window

vagrant elk
#

That is really nice.

#

A tad bit too colorful for my liking but still really nice.

wheat plume
#

Why is the AUR version also installed?!

vagrant elk
#

Hmm, I'm not sure what would cause that.

#

Maybe the arcolinux repo is just a pointer to the AUR for that package?

wheat plume
#

That is possible but IDK, I havent noticed it ask to build this package during updates

#

Oh wait, this is bin in the AUR too

#

so it doesnt need to build

vagrant elk

Probably a pointer then I would assume.

When I set gimp to use system theme it was pure gtk

#

now its using light Breeze theme

#

Did you run the prerequisite commands to install needed packages?

#

``pacman -S rofi python python-dbus python-setproctitle python-xlib python-gobject gobject-introspection

pacman -S appmenu-gtk-module
``

Sweet! I've been using it a lot lately because I've noticed that my eyes start to hurt late at night if I don't use it.

You do it on a compositor level, probably

Or you could do it at a lens level with gamer glasses. 🙂

#

They are just marketed terribly.
