I need some help

#

i've been thinking of getting 128gb of ram

i currently have 16gb but i've been wondering whether or not it should buy it

misty saffron
#

yeah you should

reef tundra
#

I could mod rimworld so much with that much memory

Running the browser

young pecan
#

Most applications just do not need that much, and most of the time there you’ll likely be CPU bottlenecked anyway since what can even use that much RAM is stupid expensive.

Nah that actually is a good browser

Edge still sucks from my 20 minutes using it to install another browser on my sisters new laptop

To be honest windows 11 should run better if someone has a new Intel chip

timid chasm

20 mins to install a new browser? wtf

open > website > download > done

reef tundra
#

No joke it gave a popup how fast it is, freezes totally immidiately, having task manager terminate it. Restart it again, see their promise how stable and fast it is, and hogging 60 to 80 % of the cpu

#

its beyond parody

empty wren
#

Shoulda been 69% usage to at least get something right

shadow minnow
#

But also, how is it with default windows antivirus? Some people say it sucks, some there is basically no point of getting some different antivirus.

empty wren
#

It works very well

#

And maybe even better given it is deeply integrated

reef tundra
#

They all use the same database nowadays

empty wren
#

I guess you will not get McAfee shredder and probably will not want to use since McAfee used it last

reef tundra
#

only difference is how fast they update that database

empty wren
#

But pigging back of Pincus why do you want some 3rd party using storage and CPU

#

For something that almost always is not an issue

shadow minnow
#

Because, tbh, going by rule of not installing shady stuff is one thing, but there is the fact that I play some games, especially mc with bit of mods, so rather have at least some antivirus.

reef tundra
#

Modern browser sandbox themselves

empty wren
#

Also I think Microsoft's implemention is usually fine

#

But other ones can be picked up

#

Only had one issue with Microsoft's with a game

reef tundra
#

Microsoft defender is sufficient for basic scanning, monitoring, and on the fly file scan

empty wren
shadow minnow
#

Still tbh not a fan of having to allow apps to just “make changes in pc” instead of being able to chose which permissions do I allow, and seeing which ones the app wants.

empty wren
#

But for the consumer Microsoft defender is pretty good

reef tundra
#

If you need something more you are pretty much in heavy shit and need to be resued

#

malware bytes or along those lines

empty wren
#

Microsoft really made a big mistake with making admin available in the form it is

empty wren
reef tundra
#

windows has the most basic form of administration control. possible

shadow minnow
#

Not good for security at all though

#

Usually prefer simplicity myself, but when it comes to this thing. It’s just, really not that hard to have the app ask for individual permissions.

empty wren
#

Well it is a desktop computer with a full fat os

#

Not a phone which is quite personal these days

reef tundra
#

Unix uses the read, write, execute for user, group, world to handle permissions. Simple and effective

empty wren
#

Do not think people would be happy with having to grant permission all the time on a pc

#

Especially in the enterprise space

shadow minnow
#

Don’t think it would be an issue if done right

reef tundra
#

System administrators should know about how groups work and add you to the correct groups to accesss all you would ever need and nothing more

shadow minnow
#

For example if instead of current window, you just have pop up with all the things app request, deffaulty ticked. So would not require any extra clicks unless you want to disallow some permission

empty wren
#

Well you can already do that

#

Just not on the start

#

Though again, doing that could break a lot

reef tundra
#

Worst situation is too much permission and they could abuse it

empty wren
#

I mean there is no flashlight app on windows asking for location 🤣🤣

#

If there was then fair case

#

Anyways WindowsOS is not a toy

#

Though Microsoft did at one point have Windows 10S

old shuttle

is anything known about how the Wooting 2 is going to report hall switch status to the OS?

Nothing new there.

old shuttle
#

ok, I'm not a Windows user; I'm also writing a USB HID driver. How does it indicate this at the USB level?

reef patrol

Now we're entering a level where I am not comfortable with the technical specifics - The Wooting appears as several devices. A keyboard and a controller basically. 🙂

These fucking headphones are so close I can almost hear them. They're going from the big town near where I live likely to the smaller town where my mail is actually shipped out from... I'm hoping they'll be here today and USPS isn't gonna do something stupid like hold them over night

reef tundra
#

They are pretty much buying a smart camera with the blave step to make the lens not removable.

shadow minnow
#

Replacement cpu and mobo finally tomorrow

thick elk
#

For me phones are really just tools to be used, why care about an ugly bump.
I fee llike removing the wobble alone makes it a good move.

#

This is also why I hate the move to metal for phones and hate the move to glass after even more.

#

Plastics are just the superior material.

shadow minnow
shadow minnow
reef tundra
#

You would be suprised on the range of plastics and unique characteristc

thick elk
#

I know hardly anyone who actually uses a glass phone without a case, whereas it's much more common with something like a plastic.
As for feel not all plastics are the same, my note 3 from 2013 felt pretty great.

shadow minnow
#

Frosted glass on the back for example feels so much better than plastic. Not the biggest fan of glossy glass though tbh. Also stainless steel is quite Pog.

thick elk
#

Metal has the problem of blocking signals, which is generally not desirable, sure antena lines help, but wireless charging if you want that is not possible for example.

#

As for the environment plastic smartphones are really no worse than metal. The main issue with plastic waste is the large quantity of disposable plastics.

shadow minnow
thick elk
#

Stainless steel sides sure, but I would go for a nice plastic back.

#

a big issue with glass as well is that it's cannot deform as much during impact, this leads to a lot of broken phones.

#

The number of specifically glass backs being shattered is pretty damn large.

reef tundra
#

plastic or metal would be wastefull to be left in some remote foreign coutry to polute their drinking water. Or burned to release more carinogenic chemicals than we are aware exist

#

For sustainability there would be a lot more gain in making the phones more repairable, upgradable, and scrapable.

thick elk
#

Phones would be a lot better on that front if the common failure points where easily available / replacable.
I really would not mind legislation that demands replacement parts for certain frequently failing parts to be available. And that installing them should only require basic tools, like a screw-driver.
Batteries for example are always going to wear out over time, so I find it quite insane how difficult replacing them on some phones can be.
Same for screens that quite commonly break and charge ports.

#

I am pretty sure you can still make your phone waterproof if you have those parts be replacable like that.
Especially once manufacturers are forced to figure it out.

old shuttle
#

it's also such a disgrace that we only have AA and AAA as standard rechargeable battery sizes

#

ie, there is no real standard LiPo cell

#

why not take a standardish 8x8x1cm for a large cell and 4x4x0.5 for a small one?

thick elk
#

I wouldn't go that far as that would impact the battery life quite a bit.
Still I feel like with proper regulation a lot can be improved on this front.

reef tundra
#

Biggest reason is maximum use of the empty area with battery but components can just as well be made to do the same. 🤷 Custom battery production of li-ion type is cheap and skilled engineers are expensive. So li-ion batteries were pretty much the filler, Li-po has mostly settled on a standard size for general use.

#

New type of batteries are being researched into. They can be cut in half, punchured, bent whatever it will still work somewhat. Which current tech is notiriously known for.

native raven
shadow minnow
#

Still would be worse. Every device usually has different battery, and having it all based on standards would just make it lot less space effective, unless you would have like 1000 standards

reef patrol
#

It's almost as if you can stack AAs

#

Same thing is valid for any kind of cell.

ashen spindle
#

yeah the focus is on standardS. multiple option, not one

#

and you combine them if needed

shadow minnow
#

Sure, but that would still be less effective than every device having custom battery. Possibly over 10%, especially since some custom batteries are L shaped. Even combining may result in like 20% less capacity. Batteries are imo one thing that should not really be standard, apart from way they are charged I guess

ashen spindle
#

weird how that is not an issue in any sector that has norms, but in sectors that don't, the argument is that norms wouldn't work so they don't try it, almost like it would show the opposite if they did 😛

#

hmmm why does this sound just like right to repair 😛

reef patrol
#

Every time a smartphone or other product is obsoleted, all of the manufactured batteries for those products are scrapped.

(Not to mention how aggressively companies like Apple try and get third party spare parts crushed and destroyed when crossing borders)

Also pretty sure it's the opposite

#

Only Intel board I have is a tachi

shadow minnow
#

Last thing, any way to OC iGPU?

reef tundra
ashen spindle
#

seriously, get it stable first before you want to OC a system without dGPU kek

shadow minnow
#

If it works in the first place feelsKEKman

ashen spindle
#

on your above 1080p screen your ram really won't make a difference if you run iGPU

#

and even with a dGPU using xmp is more than enough on 4k

reef tundra
#

Ram is slow enchance cache hyper_wah

shadow minnow
#

That’s why I want to at least OC the iGPU

ashen spindle
#

you wont see a difference between 10 and 10.01fps OMEGALUL

shadow minnow
#

I mean, if I manage to OC iGPU I may get at least bit more fps. Even though I will most likely have to limit most games to 720-1080p. But any way to do that?

ashen spindle
#

probably SoC settings or igpu section in the intel XTU

#

still won't make a difference though OMEGALUL

shadow minnow
astral haven
ashen spindle

yea

on 1080p maybe, not his 4k monitor

crisp granite
#

wait...ikaS haraS

don't even try to use an iGPU at 4k

it won't end well

1080p is pretty much hit and miss with iGPUs already

csgo and such aside at least year

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

I know, it's still an upscaled mess at 30fps max OMEGALUL

#

yeye it works and it' s better than decade old stuf blah blah, doesn't make the setup any less ridiculous

astral haven
#

🤷‍♂️ just don't max settings

#

You'd be surprised how well games run on xe

#

Even 10th gen was very often quite playable and 11th gen is twice as fast and then ram improvements

crimson wigeon
#

but if you're not running 4k 240fps ultra everything what's even the point?!

ashen spindle
#

look man if a setup has more expensive ram than my cpu and ram combined and runs a watercooled iGPU for 4k I'll make fun of the setup 😛

#

yes it works and is usable, still hilarious

crisp granite
#

this is like the polar opposite of those extreme CPU bottleneck builds

#

instead of having a super weak CPU getting overloaded by the top tier GPU at the current moment, you've got a balls to the wall, enthusiast CPU...

#

running off of it's iGPU

#

makes sense given the current market, but otherwise, pretty much only for the lols

crimson wigeon
#

You bought the CPU you're gonna use the whole CPU

astral haven
#

In this market what do you want...

ashen spindle
#

I mean, I could make a pc with scalped gpu price for the same than his mobo/ram/cpu combo and it'd be decent

#

so at that point I don't think using the 11900k's igpu for a 4k120hz is a "solid option"

astral haven
#

Ah but fuck scalpers

#

And it can handle windows desktop and YouTube at that resolution

ashen spindle
#

I mean with retail "scalped" prices not ebay scalpers

#

and idk about you but I don't think a >2grand pc (without gpu) is a good deal for a youtube machine

astral haven
#

🤷‍♂️ I spent 14 grand on mine with a gpu

#

And for windows desktop use his system is faster sometimes

ashen spindle
#

kinda doubt you get to that price without like a quadro or other workstation related things

astral haven
#

Lotta storage

ashen spindle
#

ok, so not primarily gaming focused

crisp granite
#

SLI 3090s, tens of terrabytes of really high end SSD storage, threadripper, etc.

#

very possible

#

very impractical

astral haven
#

Nah 1 3090

#

And I do nothing but watch YouTube videos on it these days

#

5950x

crisp granite
#

it's your money, spend it how you want

#

but that does make me cringe considering just how good that would be for gaming

ashen spindle
#

but an overpriced system for what it is, isn't suddenly a better value just because someone else has an even more ludicrous setup thonk

astral haven
#

Also tbf I'm including monitors and vr

#

And since I do use VR that does reduce the waste a bit lmao

astral haven
shadow minnow
shadow minnow
crisp granite
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

shadow minnow
#

If you don’t want to do anything that requires performance not really

crisp granite
#

it's that hardware is scarcer, but jackasses are scooping up what is there, scalping or mining on more than what is reasonable

shadow minnow
#

For 1000€ for example you can get a really good laptop, and even play more basic games on it (actually getting more fps than me since I have no dGPU feelsKEKman )

crisp granite
#

if miners, scalpers, and all that fucked off

#

we'd still have shortages

#

but it wouldn't be this bad

shadow minnow
#

Now some things are even getting in stock

#

Even if scalpers did not exist

#

Atm the biggest issue imo is raised MSRPs

crisp granite
#

that's because of shortages

#

and scalping

#

the stores know the GPUs will sell regardless of price

#

so why not raise the price a few hundred?

shadow minnow
#

Well they don’t sell as much instantly. Sometimes lasting for weeks now. So hopefully the prices are slowly gonna return to normal

#

If not

#

Well I have an iGPU feelsKEKman

crisp granite
#

I mean a few hundred euros or so

#

not more than double the MSRP

#

I don't even think that would be very appealing to a miner

shadow minnow
#

Hmm, makes me wonder, how much would an iGPU make a week by mining. No LHR, definitely worth it lul

astral haven
#

Basically nothing since the memory is so slow

#

CPU mining is almost profitable
And 11th gen is the least unprofitable iirc besides epyc

shadow minnow

crisp granite

intel lost a shitload of face, got a lot of flak, and were hypocrites of their own damn claims

besides, it ain't gonna become the standard, every other fab will keep using nm till we need something smaller

reef tundra
#

No you just misread they claims they retroactively edited

crisp granite
#

but...to most of the consumers...it looks a bit better...after the fallout?

shadow minnow

I mean, it makes sense for like next two nodes. Since 10nm superfin is kinda better than 7nm. But also the intel ads lately are just a joke.

reef tundra
#

Always blame the consumer blobhyperthinkfast

crisp granite
#

at a glance, "intel 7" looks a lot better than 10nm

ashen spindle

well they did put out a roadmap so time to treat them like AMD during bulldozer

shadow minnow
young pecan

Core voltage on your gen is usually something like 1.3 to 1.4 volts at very most.

Often enough you see 1.32 volts vcore and that’ll push as far as you want.

shadow minnow
#

Atm running 5200mhz all core at 1.4
Didn’t try if I can get lower yet though. But cinebench all core could spike at 73C. Also voltage sometimes spikes to 1.46 even in static mode.

young pecan

Exactly.

Looks fine, tbh.

Any further improvement will only give you very marginal improvements to synthetic.

I’d just stay where you are and call it a day.

shadow minnow

But my conebench all core score was low. Maybe since I am using iGPU the issue is that I have wallpaper engine on. Sounds like a joke, but even YouTube got buggy with wallpaper engine at 4K 144 HDR lul

There’s been some dump of those recently.

Bad ROI from 3090s.

#

And since you’re watercooling it’s a GPU that you can actually run.

shadow minnow
#

Can’t do 5300 MHz at 1.4v ;-;

#

Adaptive voltage can go to crazy values

1.475 does not crash instantly. Guru 3d got to 1.535, makes me wonder if I can do 1.5V with no crash or not. Definitely won’t try anything further though.

#

Can’t ;-; I guess I will have to settle for 5200mhz all core

#

Yeah not gonna try 5300 MHz. Can get 5200 at lot lower voltages. Gonna push 5200 as low as I can and stay there I guess.

Why is adaptive voltage so high. Sometimes it wants to go to 1.6v, always gotta disable it asap

shadow minnow

Any idea why does hwinfo and XTU show extremely different numbers from what I have set and what aorus monitoring stuff does? Like, it shows CPU going to 1.7v, which I definitely don’t want to happen. Also how to fix?

shadow minnow
#

Well, main things is, are these values safe?

ashen spindle
#

idk I never used xtu or an 11thgen

shadow minnow
#

What about hwinfo

ashen spindle

look if you want to play with OC you really need to make sure you understand what those things mean and not punch in numbers you findon the internet

#

or you'll need another cpu soon

#

and the video explains the why it happens

shadow minnow
#

Sure, but question is, is it safe since it happens? Pretty sure I was able to change this behavior in XTU but idk if I can in bios. Also, I think I saw that video once.

ashen spindle

idk I have no clue what you set, what the bios values are etc.

shadow minnow

I think I may have found what’s the issue

Hopefully

Welcome to modern voltage control

Don’t have discord on pc

astral haven
#

I'll tell you if that's the correct value

#

Ok so picture of screen

#

It's not easy to figure out what numbers are correct

shadow minnow
#

Don’t wanna risk it, 1.7 is too high. XTU didn’t have this issue with voltage set to static.

astral haven
#

Yes it did

shadow minnow
#

Nope

#

Sure it was not completely the same

#

But it didn’t go up more than 1.43

astral haven
#

You need to set voltages properly, otherwise the reported numbers will be incorrect

#

Xtu doesn't set them properly

shadow minnow
#

So how to set them?

astral haven
#

You only want to use xtu to decrease voltages from stock

#

Depends on your mother oard

#

Ask in the CPU overclocking channel for your specific board

#

In the overclocking discord

#

But manual vcore set to 1.375 with loadline set to 3rd from the lowest setting would work

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

No

#

There's a bunch of different modes

#

It has to say "manual"

#

Not override or static

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

Manual exists you just have to find it

#

Dude

I'm alot more experienced than you

May be one issue with XTU, however uninstalled it and because of this great OS can reinstall it neither uninstall what’s not allowing me reinstall.

astral haven
#

You need to listen

shadow minnow
#

But also may not work if I don’t manage to uninstall one thing with intel XTU

#

and I just can’t

astral haven
#

If xtu can change the voltages, something is wrong

shadow minnow
#

Why? XTU has voltage in settings

#

And I think the XTU profile may not be properly uninstalled. Which could cause it. Issue is, I can’t reinstall XTU to check it.

astral haven
#

I'm telling you information fam

#

I don't have time to explain how vid works

#

Put it to 12V and you can be sure it will be enough

#

and that it is dead

shadow minnow
#

Issue is it’s too much. I found the good voltage, just can’t set it to it.

reef tundra
#

Why even bother

shadow minnow
#

Also that 1.250V is definitely not OCed iGPU lul

shadow minnow
#

Gotta love windows. Just can’t find a way to install XTU again to reset profiles to make sure it’s on board default

astral haven
#

Xtu runs as a service, if the service is gone it isn't setting anything

Would be nice for people who wanna colour match their GPU to their noctua CPU.

#

Also GPU fans are always fucking trash because they're so low profile, thats why deshrounding GPUs shows such huge cooling improvements

#

Kinda totally pointless is they only do it for 3070 8GB though
