fickle ore
#

Would be interesting to see how they plan to reduce iron oxide, and how efficient that process it and how much energy it takes. Oxidizing iron is 100% efficient and free.

old marlin
#

I doubt they achieve 100% efficiency

#

just because they have to actively get oxygen in the building etc

fickle ore
#

Unless they're placed outside

#

equilibrium

old marlin
#

like right in the open

#

problem is

#

they gain the energy when getting it out of the metallic state by force

#

not the other way around

#

rotating mass is stupidly simple in comparison

#

and effectively has no cost to run or maintenance costs

#

besides checking for stress damage and lubricating it

old marlin
#

well they store energy by getting it out of the rusted state

#

and then gain it back by moving it back to the rusted state

fickle ore
#

How do you know?

old marlin
#

they state that on tier website

#

and it makes sense

#

otherwise you could just gain energy by transforming rust to metal

fickle ore
#

yeah but it's free in that the chemical reaction gives energy out of the reaction, you don't need to do anything other than to collect it 😄

old marlin
#

then wait till it generated energy again

#

and transofrm it again

fickle ore
#

but I don't know how they do it

#

you gain energy by just oxidizing iron, and gain energy from reducing it too if you can somehow change the conditions to anaerobic on a whim

old marlin
#

energy storage has me thinking for the past two weeks

#

which is why that has made me mad

#

since they make exactly 0 claims about efficiency etc whatsoever

#

like ffs

#

can't be that hard

fickle ore
#

Well if they're the first maybe it's wise to protect IP 😄

old marlin
#

they have chemical limits to how much a cubic meter of space could on average store etc

old marlin
#

chemical and physical limits apply here

#

they could just give the ideal number

#

they don't really do anything new

#

besides the use case

#

also I expect to see a limitation for mobile devices for lithium ion batteries in the next 10-15 years in the eu

#

will be fun

fickle ore
#

seems quite new stuff to me from a little bit of googling

old marlin
#

redox reactions?

fickle ore
#

Wikipedia explains it quite well. Interesting tech

old marlin
#

german site has a number on price btw

#

named as a tenth of lion

#

wait

#

it is even stupider than I thought

#

yea okay

fickle ore
old marlin
#

yea

#

basically they just store oxygen

#

unsure where they get the oxygen from in the first place

fickle ore
#

Air and Water

old marlin
#

would assume big ventilation shit from outside

#

water is problematic for that usecase

#

since they would have to replace it every so often

#

probably even every time they want to extract energy from it

#

btw

#

that works the other way around

#

then the diagram on their website

#

kinda sus

fickle ore
#

Yeah I don't think they'll use water for it. Oxygen in air seems much more easier and economical

old marlin
#

wait so

#

why don't they use it to generate power

#

unless density is dogshit

#

iron powder rusts stupidly quick

#

there has to be a catch somewhere in the whole thing

fickle ore
#

Begs the question why is this not considered for hydrogen fuel cells in cars, as this process is quite similar how they extract hydrogen from electrolysis and also since they use HFC's in this battery

#

Maybe it's too small-scale or has big latency

old marlin
#

I would bet shit density

#

I mean big latency would be fine

#

just don't generate it in the car

#

ah wait

#

nvm

fickle ore
#

i don't know how they compare to other types of energy storage

old marlin
#

better than zinc air widepeepohappy

fickle ore
#

😄

old marlin
#

begs the question

#

why was this not done before

#

wait

#

so they store oxygen

#

how do they generate power from the oxygen

#

fuel cell needs hydrogen

#

so I would assume they would have to use water as the oxygen medium

#

so the hydrogen is a byproduct of the rusting process

#

so the power generated by the hydrogen must be lower than the power needed to return the iron to the metallic state

#

the difference could be calculated

#

but i dunno chemistry

fickle ore
#

Iron-oxygen reactions are exothermic aswell as produce hydrogen which is consumed both ways. First the oxidation reaction of Fe produces hydrogen which is consumed by the HCF. Then the reaction is reversed (reduction) and the water produced by oxidation gets used by the HCF and the hydrogen in it is consumed once again.

fickle ore
#

rusting is pretty much free but can be assisted, reduction is also free if the conditions are anaerobic, but they are not, so they must use some energy to reverse the reaction

old marlin
#

uhhh

#

so

#

you see the problem

fickle ore
#

?

#

Nope 😄

#

I'm pretty stupid when it comes to chemistry

old marlin
#

that iron

#

is bound to all components of the water

#

they might do something else

#

idk

#

yea might work idk

#

too many different possible interactions that can happen

fickle ore
old marlin
#

well

#

will have to be the case

#

essentially

#

has to add up somehow

#

which would be fine for storage

fickle ore
#

Oh you mean for storage, not the process of producing energy. I get it now.

#

In that case yeah

#

I was scratching my head for a bit

old marlin
#

will be either 100% - running costs like pumps etc

#

or absolute dogshit

fickle ore
#

haha yeah

#

Now I really need to know how they reverse the reaction

old marlin
#

on another note

#

this is VERY worrying

#

in 2013 they set up ground water measurement devices

#

measured it at around 2.5 meters on all of them

#

now they can't even detect the ground water at 6 meters

#

which is the lowest depth they could measure

fickle ore
#

I don't read german 😦

old marlin
#

ah

fickle ore
#

What caused it? Nestle or some mining company? 😄

fair gull
#

both

old marlin
#

#

idk

#

apparently it got so hot

fickle ore
#

Ahh

old marlin
#

that the rain sometimes does not even reach the ground

reef patrol
#

Nestle, definitely Nestle.

old marlin
#

nestle can't pull that shit in germany yet

#

since water is not privatized here

#

almost was recently

fickle ore
#

Our country nearly sold our waters. Finland has ALOT of water.

old marlin
#

with the japanese trade agreement

fickle ore
#

To nestle.

old marlin
#

didn't come to fruition luckily

fickle ore
#

same

#

people rallied here

#

after seen the california nestle incident

old marlin
#

not against that one

#

here at least

#

north atlantic trade agreement was right at the same time

fair gull
#

privatized water

old marlin
#

which was even worse

fickle ore
#

I think London or UK sold its water

#

😄

old marlin
#

lol

fickle ore
#

kek

old marlin
#

yea uhhh

#

apparently we would need a lot of months with over average downpour to even restore the ground water levels

fickle ore
#

They mght fill or might not. Who knows. Uncharted territory ;&

#

Takes time.

old marlin
#

true

fair gull
#

cant we ask nestle to sell us water from the us

old marlin
#

we absolutely can

fair gull
#

so we just ask em to help fix the groundwater levels

fickle ore
#

:D:D:D

#

who is stupid enough to privatize water

old marlin
crimson wigeon

fair gull
#

fickle ore
#

brits too

#

hehhh

old marlin
#

nah

#

corrupt politician brits

#

corrupt politician germans at least realize that the general public would support the otherwise stupid "ecological" protestors

fickle ore
#

ground water and relevant aquifers are getting pretty contaminated too near big cities, idk what they plan to do

#

I'm excited to get to work on reducing contamination/purify already contaminated aquifers

old marlin

old marlin
old marlin

it isn't unhealthy to drink

no one is going to accept that as a repair

its going to cause more ewaste

Sure commercial repair services won't do it

vagrant pagoda

I don't count stuff that gets reused as ewaste

Welcome to California
Where all of that is state run

vagrant pagoda
#

most places dont have that option

#

it ends up in the ground

ashen spindle
astral haven

Here in Cali we just give it to the state

vagrant pagoda
#

then where dose it go?

astral haven
#

State funded recycling facility

vagrant pagoda

and then?

astral haven
#

Wdym?

#

The state sells the materials and electronics to businesses

#

But thing is, on the way it goes through certain facilities
And uh
Those facilities is where most of my networking gear came from shall we say

#

I have a friend who just goes to the local facility, pretties the ewaste up, and sells it for way under market price on craigslist and ebay

#

When I blew up my 6400 from overclocking it, I bought the replacement from him

wheat plume
#

TIL that Visual Studio was 32 bit until the 2022 version

astral haven
#

You can install either one?

wheat plume
#

Apparently the application was 32 bit despite being able to build apps for 64 bit also

ashen spindle
#

well yeah, why would it need to be 64bit to compile 64bit

wheat plume
#

So it can use more than 4gb ram if it has to

ashen spindle
#

..that is a completely different point?

astral haven
#

And a 32 bit application can use more than 4gb of ram as long as you are properly instancing

#

And even if you aren't there are tricks

ashen spindle
#

are you sure you are not mistaking VS with VSCode?

#

there is no 64bit visual studio up till the next version

astral haven
#

Does it install in program files even tho it's 32 bit?

ashen spindle
#

idk I don't really pay attention to where it is lmao

#

all I can tell you is that there is no 64bit version of VS19 or earlier

astral haven
#

Cause I had visual studio in program files and in program files (x86) and that gave me a headache

#

Oh
It's just the main exe that is changing

wheat plume
#

Why is my Discover feed offering 3d models of current Olympic athletes?

astral haven
#

There were already large parts of vs that were 64 bit just not the main executeable

ashen spindle
#

well sure, it wasn't a single module, but you could run into memory limits etc. with big projects

astral haven
#

Ye it can't open files over 4gb

#

But like

#

That takes some severe amounts of code
That really should be broken up

wheat plume
#

I can't try the AR aspect cause my room too dark

#

No

It's a 3d animation

#

What's a "Microsoft Edge HTML Document"? Are they trying to create html documents that only work on Edge???

#

You can no longer switch default browser....
Instead of simply selection your preferred browser in the list
You need to manually change file association for html, htm and pdf to that browser

shadow minnow
#

Kinda ironic, how even Apple with iOS has started going a bit towards allowing you to set non Apple default stuff, Siri deliberately asking for preferred music app… while Microsoft is doing, well, this…

ashen spindle
#

yeah I kinda doubt you can not change default browser

#

they already got sued enough for that in the EU

#

also I'd rather say it's ironic a linux user is complaining windows has more granular settings now kek

astral haven
reef tundra
#

Slap em with an anti-trust

shadow minnow
#

TBH sometimes these lawsuits go too far. Possibility of preinstalled apps not allowed to allow for competing, which would be really Inconvenient , or stuff like NFC being open source, which could cause each payment processor making their own app, and it not being compatible with others, at the end not benefiting the customer at all.

#

But also kinda cool thing with iCloud + in this iOS beta is, that now when creating new account anywhere, I can automatically have my mail hidden, and redirected, by one click, same as with generating password. Also each website having separate email afaik.

misty saffron
#

in this ios beta? the feature existed in "sign in with apple" for years

shadow minnow
misty saffron
#

yeah if only icloud mail didn’t suck

#

knowing the rats responsible for leaking emails by just signing up with “service-name@hw.gl” is still much nicer

shadow minnow

Why would it? You just have it redesigned to your normal email address, does not have to be iCloud.

old marlin
#

but if you can't get CPU upgrades

#

what does it really offer over a regular laptop

#

how often do you need to swap around ports

#

and wouldn't some kind of adapter work for those presumably rare cases

reef tundra
#

Why would you care to upgrade the cpu.

old marlin
#

to not have to buy a while new laptop in 5 years

#

or less even

#

maybe 3 years

reef tundra
#

Wouldnt you also have to get a new mobo, power delivery system, cooling, and whatnot in that case

halcyon moss
#

its more repairable.. thats fore sure

reef tundra
#

That is always a plus... if the components are available in the first place

thick elk
#

Personally I find these modular connectors to be a bit of a gimmick, as they do take up more space, they could have gone with a sane default instead and would have had more IO.

want 2 usb a, a sd port and of course the mandatory charge port: no external display for you. Want ethernet and 2 external displays? no more usb for you

#

Granted there are laptops with worse io but even at the form factor they could have gone for something more space efficient.

shadow minnow
#

Yeah. Would be cool if they went with having pcie pins there, and each connector would have built in controller, to take up just as much space as it needs.

thick elk
#

Just comparing it to my current laptop, it has vga, hdmi, 3x usb-a, sd slot, ethernet. Or even the cheap tablet-pc I got has more io (microsd, micro-hdmi, 2x usb-a, usb-c, separate charge port)

#

If it had 6 expansion ports it would be a different story but 4 is just not a lot

shadow minnow
#

Yeah

halcyon moss
#

I agree, modules are a bit gimmicky

ashen spindle
#

IO modules are hipster dongles

reef tundra
thick elk
#

If I would design a laptop with modules, I would make sure there is a baseline IO config for most uses and then add maybe one expansion bay for different use-cases.

#

make it pci-e based

wheat plume
#

RN they require you to buy 4 expansion cards

thick elk

and would you look at that I reinvented express cards

yeaaaah good catch Drakonen

fair gull

isnt u.2 the shit servers use on backplains

old marlin
#

yes

fair gull
#

ya SFF-8639

old marlin
#

has 2 problems for this usecase

#

not hotpluggable

#

and not enough pcie lanes

fair gull
#

it is

old marlin
#

yes

fair gull
#

u.2 is the protocol

#

plus theres u.3

#

u.3 has 4 pcie 4.0 lanes

old marlin
#

u.2 is as much of a protocol as m.2 is

#

so not at all

#

the drives use nvme

fair gull
#

psure the connector is the exact same between u.2 and u.3

old marlin
#

but to make that hotswap you either need additional hardware in the backplane or server hardware

#

which would allow pcie hotswap

old marlin
#

u.3 just has an updated pcie standard

#

so they needed something to classify that

fair gull
#

so weird

#

that they use pre existing connector specs

#

and "upgrade them"

#

without really changing the connector

#

altho tbf

#

usb did the same for 1.0 and 2.0

yeah I need to take pH/redox/mV out

yea uhhhhh

#

maybe try splitting up your data

fickle ore
#

;________;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

reef tundra
#

Also would consider if there is a need for graphing a value in the first place if not relevant or it does not show significant trends or passing critical thresholds

fickle ore
#

It's very critical trying to prove a theory

#

Yeah I need to think of something else

reef tundra
#

Maybe it helps to split it up in days, per value, ratio between values, group related factors together

fickle ore
#

these were pretty straightforward when you have just couple variables

#

I think that graph is quite fine right?

#

But when I have 30 elements it gets a bit harder, idk how could I display 30 elements in a graph

reef tundra
#

Divide and conquer approach might help

fickle ore
#

Perhaps

#

@reef tundra Thx for trying but I think this will have to do, I already have like 20 pics :/

reef tundra
#

Also dont forget you could do mathmatical functions as well on the input data. Get ratios, constants, certain factor.

fickle ore
#

Yeah I'm doing another pic based on %-change

reef tundra
#

Main goal when I make em is to visually display trends, relations and such

#

Also fun tip humans are terrible at reading pie charts

fickle ore
#

A much better graph, maybe I'll just use that x6

halcyon moss
#

3d graphs suck and are very hard to read

fickle ore
#

Agree, but there is no way I can put all my data on 2D if I want to condense the amount of pictures in a paper

#

Unless you have an idea?

halcyon moss
#

ok, wild ideas.
heatmap?
vectors?
scatter plot?
bar chart with usage of color?

fickle ore
#

I have no experience of doing heatmap&vector graphs. Bar maybe, lemme check

halcyon moss
#

you have 3 dimensions.. does it matter how accurate it is? or is it more of a portrayal of change?
x,y are a given
z could be color, size, numbers

fickle ore
#

that's all the data in a bar graph, I don't know if colouring is of any use..

halcyon moss
#

colors in that graph are not that useful anyway, too many

fickle ore
#

default colors

#

just testing wildly

#

scatterplot?

halcyon moss
halcyon moss
fickle ore
#

xD

halcyon moss
#

i tihnk youre gonna end up with lots of bar charts. maybe make them real small?

fickle ore
reef tundra
#

A radar chart is a graphical method of displaying multivariate data in the form of a two-dimensional chart of three or more quantitative variables represented on axes starting from the same point. The relative position and angle of the axes is typically uninformative, but various heuristics, such as algorithms that plot data as the maximal total...

halcyon moss
#

radar does not work for time bases charts

fickle ore
halcyon moss
#

wait, im forgetting the 3rd

#

ok i give up, back to my own work :p

#

oh, 3rd dimension is lots of graphs :p

#

have you tried a table and coloring it for intensity? (and thats how you have a heatmap :p )

fickle ore
#

@halcyon moss Thanks for help. I don't wanna take your work time too much 😄 Imma try that and see what happens

halcyon moss
#

you could also color for relative change.

fickle ore
#

Like main color for each type and then subcolor within than maincolor for relative change?

halcyon moss
#

no main color

#

but.. colors can be hard to read, so be careful

reef tundra
#

What if you use a table, and use colour to emphasise change. (gray= no (significant) change, red=decrease compared to previous data point or startingpoint, green=increase ...). One axis has all the relavent chemicals and the other the values over time. With the cell itself having the value?

halcyon moss
#

thats a better explanation of what i was hinting at

reef tundra
#

Could even use the colour intensity to be able to show drastic changes with intense colours and mild with pastel like tint

halcyon moss
#

but maybe first.. just map 0-100 to color intensity.

reef tundra
#

It would also help with certain variables having enourmous changes and fucking up the scaling of the rest

#

As they would be seperately, atleast you can do that

halcyon moss
#

but.. dont make it too hard to interpret.. the change chart is not a "standard" chart i guess

reef tundra
#

It should draw the attention to the information it visualises as quickly as possible. The quicker critical information can be pointed to the better. Give or take 3 seconds maximum, is my guideline

if you install that cover on them the hot air can't even get pulled away by the fan

wheat plume

When I have my speakers plugged into my Switch and my computer at the same time, using the volume keys on my keyboard also changes the volume of the Switch

#

Nice!

old marlin
#

that is the only way it can get air out of that crevice

#

there are no holes on the side

#

the additional SSD essentially sits in that crevice and cooks iself

#

ah also

#

backside of the PCB

where there is basically no airflow in the first place

#

the SSD sits on the opposite site

#

you mean the mobo the SSD won't touch?

the controller which is the critical part doesn't even face the mobo

it sits in a tub

Sure - Microsoft may have decided to use a short and relatively unpopular M.2 length, and decided to put it in the middle of an ASS technician time.

But it's still a lot better than having a main drive that is literally SOLDERED to the motherboard, and which will likely brick the console if dead, no matter if you have a secondary NVME installed or not.
