PowerToy's Launcher > Start Menu > Search Bar

#

Its working solid lately for me but not in the past

halcyon moss
#

useless taskbar realestate

wheat plume
#

it also takes a while to enable after bootup

#

Now it is

ashen spindle
#

more space NODDERS

halcyon moss
#

is the app name in taskbar back?

wheat plume
#

huh?

cursive summit
#

I don't like that title

wheat plume
#

This

pale sigil
#

Love it but feels pointless in windows tbh

wheat plume
#

M,ostly is yep

#

Great for file names though

halcyon moss
#

startmenu does that too

wheat plume
#

not if you know part of the file name

#

thats not the start of it

wheat plume
halcyon moss
#

meh, i'll see win11 when its truly here

wheat plume
#

He said he really likes the Zune UI

#

I havent seen it..... hm

#

why . in one and not the other?

halcyon moss
#

because its not finished 😉

wheat plume
#

I miss Windows phone 8.1

#

The UI was nice

#

Third Party apps also used the same UI design

#

Third party apps could also use your chosen accent color

#

System wide dark theme before android

#

Smooth af even on shitty hardware

halcyon moss
#

it was cool that it could also become a full blown desktop env

wheat plume
#

it could?!

#

I know 10 could but 8.1 too?!

halcyon moss
#

oh yeah, win mobile in general

wheat plume
#

o.o

halcyon moss
#

never used win mobile though

wheat plume
#

I really liked it

#

I had an Android tablet for apps I couldnt get on my phone

#

lel

halcyon moss
#

although my samsung galaxy also has something like it

wheat plume
#

Dex is neat

halcyon moss
#

i dont have a compatible dock

wheat plume
#

You need a dock?

#

Thought it just needed to be plugged in with USB C

halcyon moss
#

well.. usb thing to connect to a screen which support MHL i think

wheat plume
#

mhl?

halcyon moss
#

phone hdmi thingy

wheat plume
#

o

astral haven
halcyon moss
#

oh, well thats a lot better. but either my current usb-c -> hdmi dongle does not work, or an of my screens accept it

pale sigil
#

Quite funny

#

This leak isn't even a dev release

#

It's pretty funny

#

I rekon its an internal meme/naming calling it windows 11

#

Because everything else is named windows 10

wheat plume
#

Sun Valley?

#

i hear that too

ashen spindle
#

well yeah it's still win10 just win11 as the name

#

in the end its just a win10 update named win11 instead of named 2H21

wheat plume
#

im still on 20H2

ashen spindle
#

ok?

wheat plume
#

its been nagging me to update .-. despite suspending them

jaunty cipher
#

lets add another new ui and not change any of the old ones

wheat plume
#

Welcome to Windows on desktop

#

Windows Phone had always consistent UI :P

ashen spindle
#

im on 20h2 and it's not once asked me to update still

wheat plume
#

I had updates pending when I suspended them

#

cause it was about to update and I stopped it

jaunty cipher
#

win11 isnt an update yet, 21h1 is out but its still rolling out randomly

ashen spindle
#

tbf I dont mind not upgrading some of these

#

dont see a reason to give paint a new ui, just keep it as it is and dont touch it

crimson wigeon
#

Besides there already is an updated MS Paint it's called Paint 3D

reef patrol
#

updated

crimson wigeon
#

Fine, completely new

jaunty cipher
#

they dont have to remove all the uis but reduce them to like 2-3, having the old ui and new ui would be fine, as long as there's not 4 types of each and a random bit of metro

#

update them all to ribbon and all the modern apps to sun valley

crimson wigeon
#

That requires effort and collaborating with all the app teams! Can't have that!

jaunty cipher
#

u rite

#

dis why I use kde HappyBOYE

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

oh hey....

#

This happens when you hold down the windows key

solemn compass
#

huh

#

that's new?

crisp granite
#

that's actually kinda cool

wheat plume
solemn compass
#

that's pretty cool. i don't have it

wheat plume
#

Oh?

#

What version you on?

solemn compass
#

ehm

#

21H1

wheat plume
#

O.o
Wtf then

#

Strange
I'm on 20H2

solemn compass
#

hmm

#

weird

crimson wigeon
#

PowerToy

wheat plume
#

Oh

cursive summit
#

21h1 gang

#

I wish there was a way to change Windows edition without reinstalling Windows

#

But to my knowledge, there is none

crimson wigeon
#

Pretty sure you can step up to pro at least from home

reef patrol
#

Yep even.

astral haven
cursive summit
#

Yeah but that doesn't really work when it comes to kms activated ones

#

Which apparently is intended

reef patrol
#

Duh?

cursive summit
#

It works when it comes to downgrading

#

Eh, it's fine

#

I just miss group control

crimson wigeon
#

Couldn't you just switch to a non-KMS key and editionswitch then back to KMS?

cursive summit
#

Ehh I don't really have a physical license or a digital key

young pecan
#

Use a hack tool.

crimson wigeon
#

If you don't have a real license why wouldn't you just activate the best edition from the start?

young pecan
#

Or just download a tool and activate with that.

cursive summit
#

And I didn't really care that much UNTIL I needed pro license features lul

solemn compass
cursive summit
#

What

#

You know what Windows doesn't? lul

solemn compass
#

you can find codes on the internet if you just search for "windows 10 {version} cd key". this code will be valid for about a month. but if you activate it with KMS again, problem solved

#

you put in the code, click upgrade. voila

#

something like that

#

i did it twice last year

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah those generic codes are well known

cursive summit
#

Eh?

#

Generic codes don't really work anymore do they

solemn compass
#

i did it beginning of the year and a year before that. sooo

#

it did work quite recently

crimson wigeon
#

They will only activate you if there's a valid hardware genuine thingamajig for your computer on MS' servers

solemn compass
#

needed to do a lot of digging, but i found one

#

i even have enterprise now

crimson wigeon
#

If piracy is too much effort just buy a cheap key from ebay or something pepelaugh

solemn compass
#

so 🤷

cursive summit
#

Ngl

#

Literally took me 1 windows search

#

And like 1-2 mins to find a key lul

solemn compass
#

sometimes it's easy, sometimes hard 😛

cursive summit
#

Surprised that they work with 21H1

solemn compass
#

same

cursive summit
#

Well the key was ||9GHGP-VNWYW-P6YX8-JH7RH-KHJXG|| thonk

#

The shit

#

It went from 0 - 100

solemn compass
#

wow

crisp granite
solemn compass
#

hmm

crisp granite
#

this is why I never fuck around with any dev builds

#

it's not always gonna work smooth

cursive summit
#

Oooh

#

Lack of user permissions

solemn compass
#

aah

cursive summit
#

I just need to run it through cmd

solemn compass
#

that will do it

cursive summit
#

With elevated privileges

#

Hmm

#

Doesn't work

#

Multiple keys that do trigger the installation screen, just fail

#

Well shit

#

It errored me out but

solemn compass
#

Lol

cursive summit
#

Isn't technically the workstation edition superior to normal pro edition? lul

solemn compass
#

Yea thats the shit. I made it work for like 3 weeks. But then kms activation just makes it happy again

#

Ehm i guess?

cursive summit
#

Yeah for me it seems to be activated automatically

solemn compass
#

Yea nice

#

After some time it will figure out its an invalid code. So just prepare for that

#

But just reactivate and its fixed

cursive summit
#

Noice

#

Basically

#

"higher-end version of Windows 10 Professional for expensive PCs with powerful hardware."

solemn compass
#

Damn

cursive summit
#

Contains mostly server end or like CAD focused features

#

So, same shit as professional

#

But with cool high end tech lul

Grey hat hacking?

reef tundra
#

No, black hat

astral haven
#

Well not sure about that

#

Hacking off the password of a criminals computer is white hat
So preventing people from committing a crime preemptively might be white hat too
But grey would also work

reef tundra
#

No, it impedes the freedom

astral haven
#

Freedom has limits

reef tundra
#

Then let the justice system deal with that

astral haven
#

That's why I said grey hat not white hat

reef tundra
#

Its still criminal to spread and top tresspass into computer systems

#

they can be criminally procecuted under the legal system here

#

It even falls under cracking which has harsher sentencing

That's what grey hat means

pepesweat

reef tundra

I use the meme but never actually played the game

empty wren

She was being harassed for context

reef tundra
#

Even Obama is confused

empty wren
#

Thing is also they were approached and confronted about it

#

Whatever I guess, phone was cheap but nice in some ways

#

It look like Aiden Pierce's phone

reef tundra
#

But why was it taken?

empty wren
#

She was being harassed

reef tundra
#

Theft?

empty wren
#

And the police(security) took it for evidence

#

More like internet bullying or threats

#

But they did not need to take it all

#

Since it was messages on some platform

reef tundra
#

Are they prosecuting them then or done filing it into evidence?

empty wren
#

Nah

#

They took the phone

#

And said nothing

reef tundra
#

Then why are they holding it for evidence.

empty wren
#

No idea the security was a moron

reef tundra
#

I think it just got stolen right under your nose

empty wren
#

Police abuse power

empty wren
#

Thing is even confrontation like I said appealed to nothing

#

Even after a looooong time

#

Whatever america it is

reef tundra
#

Normally it only needs to be taken into evidence if they are needed to prosecute someone and it cannot be proven to be credible when you offload the evidence onto a usb stick or something.

empty wren
#

I mean even still, they could have taken her account

#

But that said they did nothing and said nothkng

#

Basically kept the device

reef tundra
#

Yea, that would be sufficient level of proof that the evidence is credible and actionable

empty wren
#

Exactly especially with the messages being saved on a server and not locally

#

Cached locally yes

reef tundra
#

You dont want the evidence to be able to be questioned in its source. Best source would be the central server or copy of either end

#

Burn it into a cd and dont see that to be contaminate after you give it a seal

empty wren
#

Such an option was not given, even if a little more was done would have made sense. Otherwise as it stands security man takes phone¯_(ツ)_/¯

reef tundra
#

With functional justice systems you can choose to not pursue to press charges and submit the evidence

empty wren
#

Ah then must have been carelessness

#

Oh well not a big deal then in this situation

reef tundra
#

Here they can only seize private property with warrant of the court. (Or suspecting it be of criminal source.)

empty wren
#

If a citizen gives up an object to an officer without a warrant it is still legal right even if the citizen is not fully aware of the law?

reef tundra
#

First off, bad practice. second of all, you should be able to demand repossession of the items when they are not formally seized by the court.

practically you can give items to anyone if you want. Police should not have special privilege to private property except when enforcing a warrant. Otherwise it should be as if two private individuals are interacting

#

The whole case seems a little unorthodox

chrome estuary
#

I don't know what the fuck is going on but my ping to ISP has literally doubled recently.

#

instead of about 15, it's 30 now. Everything is taking forever to load and it's horribly annoying

chrome estuary
#

Smithville, Local ISP for my part of Indiana. It's literally the only thing we can get.

young pecan
#

Ah, America.

#

Idk how the ISP fuckery even got so bad in the US.

#

How it was allowed to slide so extremely far into complete screwry I will never understand.

#

Like, everywhere in Aus you have a choice of 7 ISPs.

#

Even in Telstra owned lines you have a choice of 4.

chrome estuary
#

Smithville is really good. Juuust not where I live.

#

of course

chrome estuary
#

so. Should I get a 3070 for 1200$?

reef tundra
#

I wouldnt

young pecan
#

USD, I assume?

chrome estuary
#

well unless they magically come back in stock (and even with china's shit going on), that won't happen.

#

USD

young pecan
#

Mmmmm.

#

Do you plan on mining with it?

chrome estuary
#

no.

young pecan
#

In that case no.

chrome estuary
#

i personally think mining is a meme

young pecan
#

That price ONLY makes sense if you mine on it when you're not gaming.

#

Mining will reduce the price to something reasonable over time, end of story.

chrome estuary
#

you're not going to get a new card anywhere near MSRP.

#

no matter what

young pecan
#

Then you don't buy one for 3 years.

chrome estuary
#

anytime in the near few years.

young pecan
#

Or you mine on it and it becomes reasonable.

#

The fact of the matter is that cards don't exist for reasonable MSRP since all of them are useful for miners and preexisting gamers.

#

Unless you mine nights to make up the difference it makes zero sense to buy a card atm.

reef tundra
#

So miners are the problem

young pecan
#

rolls eyes

#

Lovely deduction you have there, too bad it's 85% wrong.

chrome estuary
#

closer to 50 at best

young pecan
#

Nah, I'd say miners and gamers are each a solid 30% of the issue rn.

chrome estuary
#

if it weren't for this horrible mining craze, the reduced GPU production due to the virus wouldn't've been as harsh

young pecan
#

Kinda.

#

It's not really the GPUs in shortage, it's all of the electronics.

#

Everything is in short supply to the point that cars can no longer be produced in good numbers.

ashen spindle
#

mining is just a convenient thing for people to put blame on

reef tundra
#

Mostly the silicon I remember

chrome estuary
#

Other than GPUs, CPUs, Consoles, etc...

ashen spindle
#

no mining would still mean we are in a gpu shortage

chrome estuary
#

I can go out and buy practically any other electronic i want.

ashen spindle
#

like, people dont mine on a ps5 and you cant find those anywhere

#

the automobile industry has issues because they are lacking chips

young pecan
#

Ethernet cables and the such are in plenty, but I can make those half blind with shitty tools.

ashen spindle
#

look at the lead times wooting has for the next HE runs because it takes 6 month waittime to get the sensors they need

young pecan
#

It's the damned chips. ._.

reef tundra
young pecan
#

@chrome estuary But no, don't bother buying a card for 3 years or buy one and mine overnight on it for about 7 months to either break even or reduce to MSRP. Those are the good options, everything else is either bad value or scalpers.

#

That be the world we live in rn.

#

And I say that including the NewEgg raffles for MSRP.

#

The MSRP they give is still WAY above what the card should be given it's performance.

#

Minimum $200 above, I've seen some pushing $400 above on some raffles on different sites.

#

Fucking BS a 3070 should be 1.1 grand USD. ._.

reef tundra
#

They should be available

young pecan
#

I just wish I'd had the foresight to put 60 grand into mining 3 years ago.

#

I kick myself, I actually do.

misty saffron
#

i wonder if it’s possible to just solder on two more memory chips onto this to upgrade

#

or if the capacity is fixed in controller

young pecan
#

I mean... can the controller do it?

#

Even then you could just replace the controller for the cheap, maybe. Can you reflow?

reef tundra
#

Technically, if you can get the controller to talk with it and integrate it

misty saffron
#

i’m wondering because the two places for memory chips are already prepared

#

literally a minute long soldering job

reef tundra
#

BGA does need hot air to pull off

young pecan
#

shrugs Should try it.

#

Kinda curious now.

reef tundra
#

Add some flux, remove the old solder, add fresh solder and hot air the chip in place

#

atleast that is what I would do

misty saffron
#

why not just plop the chips onto that right away

young pecan
#

Remember, guys.

misty saffron
#

there is solder there already

young pecan
#

The bigger the glob the better the job. 👌

misty saffron
#
#

question

#

where is the second m.2 slot

reef tundra
#

Mosly due to the solder being somewhat oxidised. Making the solder less wettable and wanting to turn liquid

misty saffron
#

under the giant fucking heatsink?

young pecan
#

Probably.

#

Yeah, under the panel attached to the chipset cooler.

reef tundra
#

Check the manual for the board layout

misty saffron

reef tundra
#

Also check if there is no notes that tell you some pcie slot wont work when you use the m.2

no i’m about to prepare 20 m.2 ssds for test pcs at work

reef tundra
#

Also what can be important to know if they are chipside or cpu side and if you care about that at all

misty saffron
#

god i just want to connect it so i can install windows

reef tundra
#

Any slot would work then

misty saffron
#

the chipset fan actually has a heatsink

the fuck

reef tundra
misty saffron
reef tundra
#

Like a proper one?

misty saffron
#

and a thermal padlet

reef tundra
#

not a puny aluminuim thing

#

Interresting

#

Havent seen the chipset having any significant cooling in a while

misty saffron
#

actually good job assrock?

reef tundra
#

Does it output that much heat then?

misty saffron
#

quite a bit yes

#

i have disabled the fan until 80 degrees though

#

look at that ssd thermal pad though

reef tundra
#

Hmmm. I mean heat does cause problems for data storage

#

SSDs dont output that much heat though

#

maybe for the new pcie5 ones?

misty saffron

the data could burn

reef tundra
#

First problem would be the data becoming less reliable and corrupted

misty saffron
#

the data could burn

reef tundra
#

Send the virtual fire brigade then

misty saffron

reef tundra

@golden girder Hi Rocky! (I tried to send you this as a DM, but you have turned those off, so:) I’ve been thinking of packaging up https://wooting.helpscoutdocs.com/article/83-guide-configuring-xinput-support-for-the-wootings-under-linux for easy Linux distribution. I was thinking to put the .service and .rules file in a GitLab repository and add a Makefile to put them in their proper places with some flexibility for individual distributions. Since this is relatively simple configuration files (ie., it’s questionable how much they could be under copyright to begin with), I was thinking of going with a CC0 license for the repository. Would you accept this (as the original author)?

Hard to tell now who else has contributed to it. From my side it's minor anyway, like only the comments and the text would be protected anyway. The rest depends on the syntax of the commands and so on. I structured the commands in the way to have them in-line with the normal structuring.

So I don't care and you are free to do it from my side. I collect the info, testet it, I tried to create something simple and nice. So for the time it's maybe nice to mentioning my Discord ID but I don't care. On the other side it wasn't my initial idea.

On the other side I doubt it's useful to put time into this. I informed Wooting a while ago what changes are needed to the xpad code to support the Wootings directly. I can't tell how the current state is. Like if they already suggested a code change or not because it can take a while until it's included in a new kernel version.

WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 or VP9 video codecs and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis or Opus audio codecs.

The WebM file structure is based on the Matroska container.

wheat plume
#

o.o

reef tundra
#

Why create a new file type (.webm)? Why not use .mkv?

Since WebM is a subset of Matroska, it has fewer allowed stream types and features than Matroska.

A distinct name gives us a way to easily refer to the subset, and gives users a way to associate a piece of content with a client having known-good support. Google Chrome, for example, may or may not be able to decode filename.mkv, but it will absolutely play filename.webm -- provided filename.webm conforms to the WebM guidelines.

ashen spindle

reef tundra

young pecan
#

Why tf would one use SSDs for Chia?

#

Iirc that runs on PoC, no?

#

Once plotted it’s just set and forget passive.

astral haven
#

Yes but plotting takes a tooon of time

young pecan
#

Weeks, I know.

#

But integrating any SSD into that adds weakness that ends up causing more problems in the end.

astral haven
#

You plot on a ssd then transfer to a hard drive to passively earn

young pecan
#

Eh, that’s doable I suppose.

#

In that case you maybe want 30TB of NVMe storage and hundreds upon hundreds of TB of HDD.

astral haven
#

That's literally how the software works

#

Sure but the ssds will die

#

That is the problem

#

That's why optane

young pecan
#

Sounds pog.

#

Mmm. How long would the NVMe SSDs last?

#

Let’s say each is writing 150TB of shit, that still earns obscene amounts if you’re capping 20 SSDs.

astral haven
#

A qlc drive lasts a month ish max, a tlc ssd will die in 3 ish months

#

Per gb of plotting it uses over 100gb of writes

young pecan
#

Ah.

#

Optane looking kinda tasty then.

astral haven
#

Yup

young pecan
#

Actually, what about just running it off DIMMs? How quickly do those die?

astral haven
#

Dimms are expensive asf

young pecan
#

No shit, but what’s the lifespan?

astral haven
#

Unknown

young pecan
#

Mmm. That’d be an interesting experiment.

astral haven
#

Basically depends on the die

#

The big problem is the ram to CPU core ratio

#

The high density sticks are crazy expensive

young pecan
#

Was thinking what if you made an Epyc server specifically for creating plots and offloading them?

astral haven
#

And the cpus with high memory support are also dumb expensive

young pecan
#

Maybe 10 grand or so for the PC.

#

1TB of RAM included.

#

4TB maybe 25k.

#

Keep everything else minimal.

#

Right, after some google it looks like the very best system doing dimmdrives has a plot time of 4 hours.

#

NVMe SSDs can do about 7 hours.

astral haven
#

Uh what

young pecan
#

Yeh.

#

Apparently it’s really CPU limited and the coin is resistant to applying infinitely scaling things.

reef tundra
young pecan
#

And by that I mean relative speed. DDR4 versus NVMe.

astral haven
#

Optane can be plotted at 15 minutes per 100gb...

#

As in optane nvme drives

young pecan
#

Mmmmm.

reef tundra
#

Yup, waybackmachine has an archive of the older mod list and the poster was a moderator with full perms

ashen spindle
#

if you just keep what you have, the chance to earn something decreases rapidly over time as others keep on making new plots, to outspeed that you need to constantly replot everything

young pecan
#

Ah, and therein lies the issue.

#

10th gen works with advanced optimus

crisp granite
#

way cheaper than building a desktop now, at least

#

Dunno if Alienware did it

#

But advanced optimus is a gpu feature that just needs to be included, not CPU dependent

#

Either way advanced optimus is a cheaper alternative to a mux chip, and mux chips date back to the 2005s

#

I'd recommend not Dell or HP if possible?

#

Need thunderbolt?
