#

@ashen spindle what extra layers for pcie4.0? Motherboards been 4/6/8 for years and years 😄

ashen spindle
#

we have 10 layer boards, it means you might need 8 just for pcie4 when it otherwise would be working with 6 etc.

fickle ore
#

What?? most x570 boards are 4/6 and only some expensive ones are 8

ashen spindle
#

uhh idk which one but I remember buildzoid going over some and one was 10 layers, idk which one

#

also yes its obv not the only factor

fickle ore
#

I see zero 10 layer boards

#

I wish they had made 10/12 layer boards for pcie4.0 but one can dream

ashen spindle
#

uh I think it was a z590

fickle ore
#

Yeah, I think AMD not releasing new boards for Zen 3 was a mistake. The usb issues could definitely have stemmed from too little layers for chipset pcie 4.0 or pcie4.0 in general

#

Maybe intel upped the layer count specifically for z590?

It is, yeah. I'm not gonna claim this is smart.

#

But if I play my cards right, which I have been so far, I retire in 3 years.

crisp granite
#

I can't say I like what I'm seeing at all

young pecan
#

Idk, retire at 26 sounds pretty pogchamp to me.

crisp granite
#

you're gambling

young pecan
#

I am, yes.

#

I'm gambling on knowing that I can resell mining cards at around MSRP even in a year if shit fucks up.

#

And assuming it goes well I continue mining for ages.

crisp granite
#

a safety net of sorts

#

but is the damage to your credit worth it?

#

what if regulations change and mining becomes impractical?

young pecan
#

rolls eyes I pay back my debts on time.

#

Makes my credit better.

crisp granite
#

fair enough dude

#

as long as you can pay it off in the end

#

that's what matters

young pecan
#

As far as regulation? Thought of that.

#

Heaps of countries and governments are trying to lock it down and failing.

#

Except the UK.

#

The UK's banking network is trying to make their own currency.

#

Guess who lives in a commonwealth country?

#

Meeeeeeeeeee.

crisp granite
#

and me

#

lucky us

#

I'd like to start mining, but I lack the funds

young pecan
#

I find it semi likely that if it goes full scale with the UK government then Aus might pick it up.
Honestly, so long as nothing goes horribly wrong I'm in the clear.

crisp granite
#

and I genuinely don't feel ready to

young pecan
#

That's the trick, dude.

#

Just gotta dive in face first and carve your spot.

#

Not easy, never safe, never cheap.

#

But goddamn if you do it right.

crisp granite
#

that's the thing

#

I'm not smart enough to nail it

#

I'm too conservative

young pecan
#

I was too, years ago.

crisp granite
#

I'll jump ship the moment I'm unsure

young pecan
#

I learn, Doge.

crisp granite
#

but I know I'll be able to sell the parts of the mining rig for more than I bought it all for

#

so there's something in that, I guess

young pecan
#

Every day of my life I learn. I read, I research, I study, and I relentlessly chase knowledge.

#

Over the past 8 or so years that's rewarded me in ways I'd never expected it to, you should do the same.

#

Confidence in risky decisions will only ever come when you understand the basis of what the risk is.

crisp granite
#

I do all of those as well

#

but I still don't feel 100% certain

#

I never do

#

and that's saved my bacon more times than not

young pecan
#

We're different people, I don't have an answer for you.

crisp granite
#

I know

#

I'm gonna have to figure it out on my own

young pecan
#

For me? I take the risk because I want a future where I can do real good.

#

That's enough for me, just the idea that I have that potential.

crisp granite
#

I want a future that simply means I don't have to worry about anything

#

a perfectly stable future

#

job

#

family

#

savings

#

that's all I really ever want

young pecan
#

Wish I had that.

#

That mentality.

crisp granite
#

I see no use in having more than I can reasonably use

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

young pecan
#

How can you exist being that content?

#

I can't do stuff like that.

crisp granite
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

I just don't see the value in more

#

beyond enough

young pecan
#

Hmmm.

crisp granite
#

of course, I'd save for retirement, or surprise costs

#

but I don't need tens of millions for retirement

#

so, why put away that much?

young pecan
#

Nor do I, but I'd like the money anyway.

#

Do something to help people.

crisp granite
#

I'd just give it to charities

#

with the infrastructure to make that money go further

#

better more lives

young pecan
#

I think I'd work on large scale development. Better housing for cheaper, that kind of thing.

crisp granite
#

better than me just winging it

young pecan
#

Charities just put a bandaid on a bad wound.

#

Fixing it requires trillions of dollars and massive change.

#

If I could at least help with that I could die happy.

crisp granite
#

and a few housing projects are a single drop in the bucket

young pecan
#

Indeed, but I'll be damned if I leave this world without making it better than I found it.

crisp granite
#

same here bud

#

but I'd leave it to the professional helpers

#

and I will participate, but not in a position where I can't be sure about 100% of my choices

young pecan
#

You won't get far, then.

crisp granite
#

certainty is what I strive for

young pecan
#

Nothing is certain in anything.

#

Gotta take the failure and learn from it, that's the only difference between being a novice and being an expert.

#

Experts have failed and learned enough times to know their shit.

crisp granite
#

exactly

#

we have educational institutions so that people can fuck up in a controlled environment, putting no one else in danger

#

so that you leave said institution prepared

young pecan
#

That doesn't work like that, man.

#

I can read all day about creating a mining rig and do it under a controlled environment, but life isn't controlled.

#

What if a cable isn't long enough because I got delivered a bad item? A component on the board breaks and I have to replace or fix it? Can't be taught everything.

crisp granite
#

I know

#

but you can get taught enough to bridge most gaps easily

#

certainty doesn't mean learned and done it before

young pecan
#

No, you're right about that.

#

But again, things can change and fluctuate far faster than you're trained to deal with.

#

It's a matter of experience.

crisp granite
#

exactly

#

the more experience you have, the larger those bridges can be

young pecan
#

They'll never be large enough for what you're trying to find.

crisp granite
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

I'll at least try to get close

#

better than nothing

young pecan
#

And because of fear of failure you'll never take the plunge required to grow them further.

#

Not with anything risky.

crisp granite
#

that's why I'd like to work somewhere controlled, where a superior is there to guide when I got a question, or I'm confused

young pecan
#

Mmm.

crisp granite
#

better than trying completely blind

young pecan
#

Nobody is completely blind there, Doge.

#

Just don't go into bleeding edge research and you're fine. :P

crisp granite
#

I never planned on it

#

I'm not creative

#

or smart enough to

young pecan
#

Disagree on that last one.

#

I had a teacher, more of a mentor, years ago. One thing I remember from him is he said to me once that IQ isn't as important a metric as people think.
I was confused at that, IQ is a direct measure to intelligence, how is it not important? Intelligence isn't defined by something as simple as the duration at solving problems of various complexity.

#

My social skills, for example, are completely fucked. I can run rings around most people for the sheer amount of knowledge I have, though.

crisp granite
#

I'm the same way tbh

#

I can't speak to others to save my life

#

but I've corrected my teachers before

#

on canadian history

#

not much more

young pecan
#

Honestly, I look at people telling me they aren't smart, and it confuses me a little.

crisp granite
#

I jokingly told my parents I wanted to be a professional bookworm when I grew up like 10 years ago

#

and they thought I was serious

young pecan
#

Bruh.

crisp granite
#

to be fair, I did read like 6 hours a day back then

young pecan
#

Ah, that does explain that.

crisp granite
#

and...

#

I've toned down that habit of reading way too much

#

somewhat

young pecan
#

I still do a fair bit of reading.

crisp granite
#

still read 2-3 hours a day at least 3-4 times a week

young pecan
#

Did 70k words last night.

crisp granite
#

but it's not a quarter of my life anymore

young pecan
#

Not my all time high, but high enough.

#

Still ripping through Ward.

#

Had to reread Worm tho, missed a few details.

crisp granite
#

nice

#

I mainly read history textbooks, if you can believe that

young pecan
#

Hmm. Like what?

crisp granite
#

can't think of a title off of the top of my head

#

but I was reading my mum's uni textbooks at the age of 13

#

taking notes

#

extracting the common ground within the text

#

and other texts I've read

young pecan
#

Recently got some neurology textbooks from the high seas.

#

It's interesting, but not for work, y'know?

crisp granite
#

yeah

#

as with almost everything

#

it's only interesting if you don't deal with it on a daily basis

#

or

#

if it is interesting even then

#

you've struck a gold mine, stick with it

young pecan

I really need to read up on audio engineering. :L

I love how Apple are marketing the iMac speakers as "room-filling audio"

Yeah.... EVERY SOUND fills a room, you could drop a plate off a table and have it shatter and that fills the room with sound. But its not good sounding sound

reef patrol
#

In Apple's defense they didn't coin that phrase or what it means.

#

But they're definitely lying 😄

wheat plume
#

I know :')

#

They arent lying, it WILL fill the room

#

but that doesnt market how it sounds

misty saffron
#

i'd expect those speakers to be really good

#

after homepod

#

they clearly have good audio engineers

wheat plume
#

I find every home assistant speaker sounding pretty dang good

reef patrol
#

Sure - If you're sitting in front of it. "room filling" is a huge stretch.

wheat plume
#

my friends echo sounds great

reef patrol
#

Room Filling implies you can do a small party.

wheat plume
#

My speakers get super loud but they arent the best sounding

reef patrol
#

LCDs ruined speakers.

#

Everything is now so thing, you can't really fit traditional parts. So they make compromises and work on new tech.

Your run of the mill Smart TV definitely needs a soundbar to sound remotely as good as any random CRT.

misty saffron
#

lg puts nice speakers in their tvs

reef patrol
#

"Speakers" (Random example)

wheat plume
#

ok, no way that sounds good

misty saffron
#

well, mine is way thicker at the base

reef patrol
#

With how thin laptops and the iMac are now, you can't expect them to cheat physics 😄

misty saffron
#

not the base but the bottom

reef patrol
#

I mean ultimately the iMac IS basically just a giant iPad.

misty saffron
#

hey my ipad pro sounds really good

reef patrol
#

Across the room?

misty saffron
#

maybe not that good

shadow minnow
#

Not even talking about iPad or MacBook, Even iPhone has pretty good speaker, so iMac with all the speaker may sound pretty good

shadow minnow
#

Also who knows how is it gonna be with Atmos, since two normal homepods were pretty good at emulating surround sound, and with the format well done, basically anything can sound surround, which is very rare though

pale sigil
#

i would

honestly

#

ye

wheat plume

I do want to try out MacOS, but I dont want to spend almost $900 to try it out

and I dont have a spare machine to try it on

#

cause it wont install on my computer cause nvidia gpu

#

:P

reef patrol
#

The M1 has killed this for now going forward.

wheat plume
reef patrol
#

Doubt it'll be that soon given how many Intel Macs are still around. But it will definitely mean M1 specific Macs can't be emulated for a long time.

ashen spindle
#

not the entire OS but it could be certain features already

wheat plume
#

how long does it take for a mac to no longer get OS upgrades?

vapid zodiac
#

according to apple, about 3 seconds

reef patrol
#

Uh... 8? 9? years?

#

Big Sur the current version will run on as old as 2013 machines give or take.

wheat plume
vapid zodiac
#

just to catch up on that audio quality from home hub thing, dont get a homepod for audio, get a echo or google home and buy decent speakers with the difference in price

reef patrol
#

However the issue with Apple is that once they cut support, they cut it hard.

wheat plume
#

yep

reef patrol
#

Lot of stuff starts breaking and your access to apps is VERY butchered.

vapid zodiac

also that os updates will slow down your system "to ensure longevity" or some other bs

astral haven
astral haven
wheat plume
astral haven
#

Well yes?

ashen spindle
#

more like microsoft dont have any reason to get you to upgrade the hardware?

#

they dont sell you the pc

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

Which is a good thing because otherwise you get an apple situation where the hardware is designed to fail muuuch more quickly

vapid zodiac
#

that wasnt a one time thing...

#

theyve been doing it for years

astral haven
shadow minnow
#

While you have support, one kinda advantage of MacOS is you can run windows on it but not the other way around

astral haven
#

You can go the other way around tho

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

There's alot more hardware that runs macos than doesnt

#

Worst case you runnit in a vm like linus

vapid zodiac
#

macos is just reskinned linux

pale sigil
#

The whole apple slowing old devices down was exaggerated

shadow minnow
#

^

pale sigil

I mean

#

From a GUI point of view

ashen spindle
#

exaggerated yes, wrong no

pale sigil
#

Linux tries to copy MacOS

#

lol

#

or well

#

distros

#

mostly

reef patrol
#

But they don't have any control over that situation.

astral haven
#

Not linux

ashen spindle
#

sure but unlike apple they arent directly in control of the hardware line and have a big reason to push it

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

It wasn't exaggerated btw

shadow minnow
#

It was

astral haven
#

You just haven't used one of those devices

vapid zodiac
shadow minnow
#

I literally have

astral haven
#

Once the battery gets under 50% useable lifespan the performance tanks hard

pale sigil
#

Ye

astral haven
#

It actively lags on the home screen

pale sigil
#

But thats not apple doing it in a evil way

ashen spindle
#

yeah it wasn't for no reason you're right, it was because they are shit at making it easily replaceable and dont want users to service their own device

pale sigil
#

its just pure logic

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

I mean it was in the end getting people to upgrade their phones because the battery died

wheat plume
astral haven
#

Customer had the phone for 2 years and it was at 45%

ashen spindle
#

it was a "good fix" because they purposefully made a bad design in the first place

astral haven
#

Swapped the battery for them and it was as if they had an entirely new phone

pale sigil
#

ofc

#

Apple are anti consumer af

astral haven
#

They would have had to pay apple 130 us

pale sigil
#

but the point of the battery shit

#

was to prolong battery life

#

at a cost

reef patrol
#

"Security"

#

If no one can swap parts in your product except for the manufacturer, it's more secure.

astral haven
#

That means that you don't know how to properly handle software security

reef patrol
#

Because you know... we have an absolute plague of third party repairmen installing malware into your thumbprint reader or the speakers on your Macbook.

#

The whole battery/LCD discussion is a bit more interesting. Cause Apple always get blamed when a phone blows up, even if they didn't have anything to do with the replacement.

But until they sell official OEM parts, they don't have a leg to stand on.

astral haven
#

Nah the problem isn't malware it's installing a fingerprint sensor that allows you infinite retries

reef patrol
#

Linus did a video on right to repair the other day and basically shut Apple down hard using well reasoned arguments.

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

or at least allow people to buy the same parts, they dont have to directly sell them

astral haven
#

Not apparently

#

Otherwise you wouldn't have a problem swapping fingerprint sensors

reef patrol
#

That's not why.

#

It's because every "important" part has a serial number that is tied to the main PCB.

#

They have to match or the phone throws a fit.

astral haven
#

That is what Apple did yes

reef patrol
#

LCD, Battery Thumbscanner and so on.

astral haven
reef patrol
#

You used to be able to clone the serial from one part to another, but Apple made it harder.

#

Now all you can do is solder off the broken sensor part and splice it with the working, important bit.

astral haven
#

Well no you cant

reef patrol
#

Could - My info is about a year old.

#

I no longer work as a repair tech 😄

#

And the newest iPhone that was worked on was the 8. And only just.

astral haven
#

As in the physical "can"

#

It's not physically possible to resolder either the touch Id chip on the fingerprint sensors or the display controller on the display ribbons

reef patrol
#

My colleague who did nothing but micro soldering would disagree. He basically did nothing but patch up damaged flex cables 😄

vast moss
#

I’ve seen folks like Louis Rossmann and Jessa Jones do microsoldering of that sort

reef patrol
#

Anyhow - Don't know, don't care anymore. I won't touch a modern Apple product with an iron poker 😄

astral haven
#

There's a difference between patching a slightly damaged cable and swapping one of those hundred Ball chips

#

Rossman literally just said it wasn't possible 2 days ago

reef patrol
#

I don't believe I ever said that was being done 😄

vapid zodiac
shadow minnow
#

But also, HomePod mini is imo pretty good speaker, just the normal sound is pretty good. As a smart speaker, well, Siri, for me it does everything I need since only commands I use is play, set lights and that’s all, but otherwise lul

#

Apple has least issues with this afaik, especially compared to Amazon smart speakers lul

ashen spindle
#

not really they are all equally bad at that

#

once we get decent hardware and I can run it locally, I'll gladly use it for home automation

vapid zodiac
#

theyre all large companies that all have antitrust issues

ashen spindle
#

but nothing in cloud

vapid zodiac
#

and again, dont buy a homepod for the speaker, buy it for the siri (aka, dont buy it) because you can get one of the cheaper alternatives and spend the difference on a really good set of actual speakers

shadow minnow
#

Well, Apple policies are kinda, some people suggest Siri is so bad compared to other smart speakers because of lack of collected data lul but that may not be truth at all.

vapid zodiac
#

siri is bad because its extremely limited and beacause the voice recognition is... terrible

ashen spindle
#

apple takes your privacy as serious as they are a green company

#

aka big in pr, nothing in reality

shadow minnow
vapid zodiac
#

its a decent speaker but for the money you can get better ones

#

significantly better

#

i mean, if youre happy paying more for a objectively worse product ¯_(ツ)_/¯

shadow minnow
# ashen spindle aka big in pr, nothing in reality

Well, they still may take it seriously, as if they didn’t, number of lawsuits and stuff like people talking about it, if serious things against it would be found out. But also things like Apps having to ask for tracking approval, Apple may not be doing it for privacy, but result for end customer is the same, same with all the environmental stuff.

ashen spindle
#

result for end customer is the same

#

hahah

#

hahahahah

#

no

same with all the environmental stuff.

wheat plume

shadow minnow

shadow minnow
#

But also default camera app

young pecan
#

A phone, though?

wheat plume
#

ye

shadow minnow
#

Yes

young pecan
#

Do you have a redmagic phone or something insane?

shadow minnow
#

Apart from ultrawide the photos are pretty good, even low light, although the low light is not comparable to cameras like cannon r5 at all, but that’s also mainly because of crazy high ISO that camera has, although this phone has lower smallest iso

shadow minnow
young pecan
#

Huh.

#

Pretty cool.

#

Kinda insane, but still cool.

#

Not just take an actual camera, tho?

#

If you’re even bothering to use Lightroom you must have some kind of high quality use for the pics?

shadow minnow
#

One thing is that I don’t have any use of it, and another that I usually just take pictures randomly when Walking somewhere... camera would be too heavy. Also don’t edit that often in Lightroom, just when I have some picture that imo looks really good, and want to improve it even more, which is not often at all lul

young pecan
#

Ah.

#

Yeah, I getchu. That makes sense.

#

Have you looked into the few modular phones about?

#

One of them can actually be 40% by mass camera. It’s nutty.

shadow minnow
#

Not really,
One thing that seems really interesting though, and I hope to see in future on some phones are the liquid lenses.
But also don’t get the increasing mp, at least for me, 4K is already high enough, and rather have higher pixel pitch allowing for better low light performance.

vapid zodiac
#

the issue with phone cameras is that the sensor is just tiny, youre never gonna get as good dynamic range as a dedicated camera

#

which is why i still dont get why people buy phones "because the camera is so good"

reef patrol
#

Because unless you're a dedicated photographer, you're not going to be lugging your DSLR with you everywhere.

#

You always have your phone with you - Fewer photos missed.

okay, bad relative to something you could get for the same money

misty saffron
#

comparisons only focused on specs will always be flawed

vapid zodiac
#

who said i was basing it off specs?

#

audio quality is objectively better on a good set of speakers that cost the same as a homehub

misty saffron
#

let me fix that then

#

comparisons only focused on audio quality will always be flawed

vapid zodiac
#

what else are you gonna compare with speakers?

astral haven
#

It's worse than a chromecast audio + speakers that cost the same price - the price of a chromecast audio

misty saffron
vapid zodiac
#

i plug in, press setup button, gj done

misty saffron
#

then you try to figure out where to best put speakers in the room

#

echo isn't very good

#

i will have to argue beamforming will always beat "i play sound in one direction"

vapid zodiac
#

and the homepod is gonna scan your room for acoustics and tell you where exactly to put it?

misty saffron
#

no, it just sounds the same in every part of the room

#

it's that simple

vapid zodiac
#

so its just a omnidirectional speaker?

misty saffron
#

a 7 tweeter speaker with beamforming

vapid zodiac
#

or is it carefully listening to its output echo, and adjusting to make it sound the same?

misty saffron
#

yes, that's what the microphones are for too

vapid zodiac
#

idk why youre trying to defend this, you will get better audio quality out of a dedicated set of speakers that cost the same as a homepod (or less)

misty saffron
#

that's like saying you don't need a case for the pc because it's cheaper and it works better without one

astral haven
#

No it's like saying your case doesn't need a spoiler cause it doesn't need to be aerodynamic

shadow minnow
#

I was also talking about HomePod mini and it’s sound for a price. But even HomePod, pairing two for Dolby atmos

misty saffron
#

i have two with my apple tv

#

😛

shadow minnow
vapid zodiac
#

idk how youre getting 2 speakers to use atmos considering the standard requires 4 speakers

astral haven
#

Nah

misty saffron
#

it's 14 speakers, actually

astral haven
#

Atmos only requires 2

misty saffron
#

quite a bit more than 4

shadow minnow
astral haven
#

No it's not hollow

misty saffron
#

beamforming is a bit more complicated than you think

astral haven
#

No it's actually alot easier

shadow minnow
#

That, it has speaker facing to different sides, beam forming is not as good as having speakers in more locations, but better than nothing

#

And also, with really good Dolby atmos videos even my phone sounded like producing sound from behind lul

misty saffron
#

time to shill the surround sound feature in airpods pro

shadow minnow
#

Wish I had more use for it

misty saffron
#

sad apple still hasn't implemented airpods surround sound in apple tv

shadow minnow
#

But even the phone has pretty good surround sound, and since I 99% use just one AirPod at a time, phones surround audio sounds like magic lol

misty saffron
#

99% certain ios is their testing ground though

#

eh, surround sound is always going to sound great in earphones

#

we only have 2 ear holes

shadow minnow
#

But yeah, since humans only have 2 ear holes, you could theoretically create perfect surround sound just with headphones with two speakers

#

But that would need a lot of measurements and individual adjustment

#

Wish more companies were doing stuff like Sony with ps5 audio too

misty saffron
shadow minnow
#

Does not have to be as long as audio from one earcup does not travel to the other one, and if done correctly

astral haven
#

You need good precision (imaging) and that's not a cheap thing to do

shadow minnow
#

Adjusting one headset for one person, you just need microphones in ears of the person, in earcups, and play some sounds, and theoretically with possible help of AI, after some time, delays and frequencies should be possible to be adjusted for the person for not such a high price, with not lot of time spent, even though it would not maybe be as precise
