Pacman only does binary packages so paru whatever that is

today i got a call from erfurt in germany. am germany and company is also german located in germany. first hint that smth was off: english speaking caller. second hint: heavy indian accent. third hint: supposedly from microsoft. fourth hint: we as a tech company have gotten the varus and are in great need of "microsofts" help. so heres what i did: i said goodbyeeeee bye byeeee. hung up. they called back. i greeted them as before. the dude instantly goes "are u crazy motherfucker?" and i just hang up instantly.

not buying an oculus rift S then

ashen spindle

I dont think you should make a decision based on what 1/10000 people might see

crisp granite
#

still

#

just one more strike against it

reef tundra
#

Still, getting banned of facebook and hardware becoming paperweight is a little dependent

ashen spindle
#

ok so jailbreak it and ignore the FB connection all together

crisp granite
#

I don't want that because a new rift S would cost as much as all my peripherals

reef tundra
#

You should not have to break its firmware to use it

crisp granite
#

and if it's an expensive paperweight because of something out of my control, I don't want it

crisp granite
#

that bothers me

#

a lot

#

that also kills warranty

ashen spindle

do they even still sell the rift?

crisp granite

rift S

ashen spindle

thought they stopped production a while ago

yes

wheat plume

my sister's computer.....Mine is almost as dusty tbf

idk

I dont think you can get a shield with 4 socket slots

#

that might be it

#

not sure, sometimes they arent there

reef tundra

The switch can be useful to prevent the pins from welding themselves to the terminal and causing a fire. But you do have to use it and switch it off

just unplug it at the drive and leave the cable there?

how do you secure/separate the admin account on windows 10? do I HAVE to have two accounts?

account management is so much more convoluted with how much they push online accounts :/

halcyon moss

you can set the user access thingy to be more strict and ask for permission more often

And yeah UAC is the answer to not having two accounts

lethal wasp

I was crypto jacked and I want to harden my security

I still have no idea how/why it happened

You don't.

#

You take backups.

#

And make the backup tool not allow mass backups to deter crypto overwriting.

lethal wasp
#

I presume the backup can't stay attached?

reef patrol
#

That all depends on how it interfaces with the PC.

#

I wouldn't leave it plugged in as a drive.

#

Network attached controlled by a background app is preferable.

lethal wasp

still, it infected system32 directly, with no way to trace back to what caused it, is that just inevitible or would it have been avoided if I was on a non admin account?

crimson wigeon
#

I think the limited hardware specs can be a good thing as it forces the developers to actually write efficient software... hopefully...

ashen spindle
#

hahahaha

#

good one

crimson wigeon
#

And then when the time comes to get better hardware blam it'll fly... I wish

vagrant pagoda
ashen spindle
#

yeah but only because those specs dont increase over time like phones

#

a console is stuck at one config for like 5+ years

zenith sonnet
#

I think the task of writing efficient software lies with the software developers
And generally I'd blame lack of expertise for inefficient software

vagrant pagoda
#

back in the early days it was a big deal

crimson wigeon

Think it's just crunch, lack of time and managers forcing new new features constantly because who cares about boring shit like "optimization" just tell the plebs to get better hardware lool

@wheat plume isnt it possible to flash some linux distro on an android phone?

crimson wigeon

ivory geyser

Also, kinda curious: What is wrong with running actual Android on phones?

crimson wigeon
#

Google, probably

wheat plume
zenith sonnet

I think the biggest issue with software optimisation is that it's all very nontransparent
Nobody can see the code, nobody can point out errors

ivory geyser

Just use something like LineageOS.

crimson wigeon

I remember testing Ubuntu Touch on my Galaxy S2 back in the day 😄 the glory days of Android phone tinkering when there were a shitton of different ROMs to flash

But the 99% lows don't improve, either

fickle ore
#

@zenith sonnet then it's very likely it's RAM and/or GPU bottleneck

#

But the test is fucked for showing the 99p since its capped at 300 fps, so whatever throttling there is, its probably shown in the 99p numbers aswell

zenith sonnet
#

I always wonder why nobody does 1 ‰ lows?

fickle ore
#

I thought 99 percentile is 1% lows O.o

zenith sonnet
#

I also learned that there needs to be a space between the number and the % sign

zenith sonnet
#

I guess you could say 0.1 % lows?

#

Oh right, GN does those

fickle ore
#

Ahh, everything shows in them, windows background tasks, engine hangs and etc so they can present a misleading picture

zenith sonnet
#

GN does always display margin of error, and do at least 5 runs to rule those out

ashen spindle
#

@fickle ore have you been able to test if new agesa actually fixed usb issues?

#

GB are still missing latest agesa so I couldnt try it yet

reef patrol
#

Holding off with updating my BIOS till I have Lekker. Then I can test if it's fixed or not 😄

ashen spindle
#

does your board have a 1.2.0.2 bios already?

fickle ore
#

@ashen spindle not released yet been waiting for that thing

reef patrol
#

.1 actually.

ashen spindle

yea .1 patch A is what GB also have

but cba trying a half fix so im wating fo r.2

reef patrol

Ughh.... I just googled it.

.2 is the actual fix 😦

Yeah, GB BIOS' are in shambles

It's so frustrating

ASUS has a beta version of the BIOS available, at least on my mainboard. Not sure if it's worth trying to flash since this is my main computer and I'm only familiar with EZ Flash, so if the board goes down I'd not be sure what to do

astral haven
#

You have bios flashback?

#

Cause for that you just need to download the program, unzip, run the exe, and throw the renamed bios file on the flash drive

vast moss
#

I've updated my BIOS using a tool ASUS calls EZ Flash, which you use while the computer is powered on. I haven't had to do a BIOS flashback starting from off though. I don't know if my board comes with a dedicated button for it.

astral haven
#

Flashback requires a dedicated button

#

Ez flash is just like a normal bios update

vast moss
#

That's what I thought. I don't have a flashback button on my board, so my only chance at flashing a BIOS is from the BIOS itself.

pale sigil
#

Corrector erecto

vast moss
#

So basically, while ASUS does have a beta BIOS with AGESA 1.2.0.2 available, it is a beta, so if something goes wrong, my board is effectively bricked.

astral haven
#

Eh usually agesa issues = crashing randomly in windows and games

vast moss
#

I'm downloading the BIOS anyway in case I do decide it's worth trying.

Microsoft last year decided to release the XBOX game pass to compete with the EA play game pass which is now even available on steam. Now normally the xbox gamepass is a service that you pay monthly towards and in return you get access to hundreds of hit games like among us free, fnaf, hello neighbor free and my personal favourite goat simulator...

@cursive summit similar to the disc drive

Including update

cursive summit

Kinda anti-consumer

vast moss

Serialization, I take it

#

This is why we need R2R laws

pale sigil
#

Ye I had to use the pcb from the disc drive and transfer it to a new one

#

To update xD

reef patrol
#

I mean requiring a new authentication token because the CMOS battery is changed is... hardly an issue? Until they shut down that console permanently.

#

At which point you should be able to "pirate" everything you already own fairly easily. But I see the argument.

#

The whole serialized hardware is a much more serious complaint.

old marlin
#

considering how close the PS4 and PS5 are software wise the servers should keep running for a long while

#

BUT

#

nobody has 100% uptime

#

especially home users

reef patrol
#

You're not wrong.

old marlin
#

so if your battery fails

#

and you don't know it

#

and you decide to turn on the PS4 and play some singleplayer game cause internet ain't working atm for you

#

you can't

#

I can see why digital games would be blocked obv

pale sigil
#

Meh

#

Jailbreak ftw

reef patrol
#

Yeah that's fair - A disc based game should run regardless.

old marlin

but blocking physical games makes little sense since they won't ever need a connection if you had a battery

cursive summit

You just can't really jailbreak a PS4

old marlin
cursive summit

Iirc Xbox X jailbreak was never found

misty saffron

cursive summit

old marlin

the series x is just an insane value for consoles

#

if you ask me

#

game pass alone makes it worthwhile

cursive summit
#

Yep

old marlin
#

if you consider it's upcost over regular online fees

#

which are still dumb

#

but like

#

what are you gonna do

cursive summit
#

Which is why if I get the chance, I'll snatch the XSX

old marlin
#

if you own the console you are tied to them anyways

cursive summit
#

I also like that you can just run code on it

#

With the sandbox feature or whatever it was called

vast moss

Not quite related, but am I the only person that thought the Series was just an expansion of the One line when it was announced?

misty saffron
#

😎

pale sigil
#

Nice grill

old marlin

you can run all the old stuff with it

#

use all the old accesories

#

but the new stuff only works with the new console

#

so similar to the PS5 and PS4 in software regards

cursive summit
vast moss
#

I didn’t really pay too much attention to launch, but I saw the S and X in the names and thought they were still Xbox One because of its S and X skews

misty saffron

i don't have a ping pong ball tf

old marlin

hardware wise the series x is just impressive

#

quite honestly

cursive summit

RDNA2 is sick

old marlin

the PS5 has similar chips

cursive summit

Now if only we could have RDNA2 APUs for PCs lul

old marlin

but the series x is just faster overall

I mean

#

I would agree

misty saffron
#

i haven't paid for a single game for my series x

cursive summit
#

Plenty of people in the industry are saying consumers are overpaying

old marlin
#

but the main problem is the cut for publishers

misty saffron
#

only game pass which was about $50 total

old marlin
#

the devs still get too little in most cases

#

sadly

cursive summit

vast moss
# cursive summit All the money goes to the fucking higher ups

Semi-related: a certain game company whose name is more positive than they are deliberately marketed their lower cut, claiming it’s better for developers and would lead to lower-priced games. In actuality, prices are the same and that dev money just goes to the publisher’s higher-ups

old marlin
#

you mean the same certain game company that tried to entirely scam a certain scummy phone ocmpany out of their money and lost

#

while making 1984 references

vast moss
#

Yep

old marlin
#

while trying to manipulate the market on another platform themselves

reef patrol
old marlin
#

cause "the publishers chooses where people will buy"

old marlin
#

at least apple was somewhat in that position when they made them

reef patrol
#

They became what they despised xD

old marlin
#

if you are against right to repair and make 1984 references you esentially became your own meme

reef patrol
old marlin
#

btw

#

germany just invested 700 million in 6G

#

why tf do they do this

vast moss
#

I think that in a way, both companies were wrong in that battle
30% is a pretty large cut (even if it is industry-standard by now), and only allowing software through official channels “for security reasons” is somewhat understandable but still limiting; however, the publisher deliberately broke the rules and deserve their retribution

old marlin
#

5G was a questionable improvement at best

#

6G does literally nothing for us

vast moss
#

There are already 6G talks?

old marlin
#

yes

vast moss
#

damn

old marlin
#

apparently terahertz frequencies

#

with multiple times the speed of 5G

#

but like

#

why

#

completely unneeded in the foreseeable future

#

and terahertz just makes it a lot less useful

misty saffron
#

meanwhile average internet speed in germany is 50kbps

old marlin
#

^

crimson wigeon
#

To finally get ahead of other countries oh hahahahah as if that's gonna happen

old marlin
#

the only major upside is that the connection itself would be possible with under 1ms delays

#

but like

#

you are connected to the internet still

misty saffron
#

5g is utterly retarded

old marlin
old marlin
#

like 6G has literally nothing

vast moss
#

I know the US is pretty good with internet speeds, but I have only ever seen my home network reach 200 KB/s once, maybe twice

misty saffron
#

research into possibilities of cellular working better indoors? no, speed go fast

old marlin
#

the US has problems with data caps

old marlin
#

obv 6G can do that as well

#

but nobody needs those speeds atm

crimson wigeon
#

But it's 1 G more and supahfast

old marlin
#

and nobody even has that with 5G yet

#

like

#

do one thing at a time

misty saffron
#

i'm talking about cellular actually working through thick walls

old marlin
#

and don't build the new tech over the test areas of the old tech

#

again and again and again

old marlin
#

basically

#

6G would be much worse

misty saffron
#

exactly my point

old marlin
#

since they use terahertz

#

higher frequency = higher loss

misty saffron
#

i'm no expert in this shit

ashen spindle
misty saffron
#

but prioritizing speed over fixing problems like "oops i moved 1 meter to the left and now my 4g doesn't work" is retarded

old marlin
#

there are a couple

misty saffron
#

can 5g at least serve more clients with 1 station?

old marlin
wheat plume
old marlin
#

imma just ive you the first one

#

oh btw

#

is supposed to be the successor of 5G in 2030

#

so they giv emoney providers can use up till 2025

#

that money will totally go to research dafoe

wheat plume
#

WHY TF do they want 6G??!! Not even 5G is ready for the masses yet .-.

misty saffron
wheat plume
#

yeahhhh

old marlin
#

Bundesregierung, can I have 700 million?
to make 6G?
yeeeees
actually pays managers like a boss

twin hound
#

You just have to realize that things progress faster than they used to.. 2G -> 3G -> 4G -> 5G ....

old marlin
old marlin
#

I guess that making it is necessary

#

but spending money on 6G before 5G even is somewhat implemented is just stupid

misty saffron
twin hound
#

Smart cities, self-driving cars etc

misty saffron
#

😎

old marlin
#

also 6G requires a shitton of basestations

misty saffron
#

people also have to realize most of the features don't require gigabits per second lol

old marlin
#

self driving cars is the biggest meme of all atm

#

that was the selling point for 5G

misty saffron
#

my dad is a perfect example

old marlin
#

but I bet that in 2030 we won't have interconnected self driving cars

misty saffron
#

thinks he needs at least 300mbps for his online phone game to work well

old marlin
#

heck by 2025 we might get the first decent EVs from companies not called tesla

twin hound
#

someone in 2000 would bet that we wouldnt have handheld PCs in 2010

old marlin
#

or in 5 years

#

mind you

misty saffron
#

streaming fortnite from phone

#

obviously

old marlin
#

in 5 years will be mass produced EVs essentially for the first time that are not open beta

#

that is not guessing

#

that is the official dates for stuff like the ID.5

misty saffron
#

why do self driving cars need 5g

old marlin
#

so basically the first things that are not in early development plattofrms

old marlin
#

which they are not for now

#

but will be where it will go obv

#

BUUUT

misty saffron
#

retarded

old marlin
#

the cars themselves should be the connection points

misty saffron
#

you can literally use wifi tech for that

old marlin
#

and not some random antennas

twin hound
#

Why everything has to do with entertainment and watching videos? The communication costs (time) for smart applications is a pain for developers... many apps utilize AI by computing stuff on the cloud

old marlin
twin hound
#

The tradeoff between computation-communication is a real problem for professionals that make your stuff work

misty saffron
#

your algorithm is shit if it requires super low latency or super high speeds

old marlin
#

many apps utilize AI by computing stuff on the cloud

#

name me one

#

that needs a shitton of data throughput from the end device

#

to a cloud server

#

at that point you could just stream the entire UI

#

even if the end device has a 4K screen 4G would be enough for that

twin hound
#

devices using sensors, for medical reason... hmmm

old marlin
#

your phone could essentially be a thinclient

twin hound
#

ex there is an app for CGM

misty saffron
old marlin
#

literally what kinda sensors do you need to fully load 4G networking

#

also

misty saffron
#

human dead because of 50ms latency??

old marlin
#

if you rely on stuff like 4G etc

#

you might as well just stay home

#

since the networking points can easily get overloaded

#

5G did not improve on that

#

6G will improve on that just by needing a lot more networking points

twin hound
#

what about volunteer computing?

old marlin
#

cause the coverage is worse

misty saffron
old marlin
#

like

misty saffron
#

people with medical conditions not allowed near the queen

old marlin
#

do you use folding at home on your phone whenever you go around and don't use it?

#

and even then

#

you get a pack of data

#

and work on that

misty saffron
#

volunteer computing on a portable device kekw

old marlin
#

your phone would not even be able to calculate so much data to fully saturate 4G

#

not by long

misty saffron
#

battery life and thermal efficiency are bigger problems than internet connection speeds

twin hound
#

The thing is you are criticizing technology advances, but you are not offering a better solution.

#

Well there is also ongoing research about batteries

#

Look into nuclear powered batteries

misty saffron
#

better solution: develop better algorithms instead of rushing out something completely unnecessary

old marlin
#

fucking implement the current standard fully

#

when I go to the train station/mall in my smaller city

#

I get 4G

#

but it is completely overburdened

#

so not even discord messages will load

#

german network providers don't develop any software or hardware for 6G anyways until 2025

#

when it is supposed to take over in 2030

#

so they will just yoink the money

pale sigil
#

Basically 5g here is what 4g was meant to be

#

XD

misty saffron
#

internet-connected cgm software is also a very bad example by the way

old marlin
#

I still don't get a ton of 4G

#

and most often when I get them they are overburdened

misty saffron
#

interpolation is a thing

old marlin
#

cause I won't be the only one using it

twin hound
misty saffron
#

extrapolation is also

twin hound
#

They are deploying 5G but you also get the full 4G by them doing that

misty saffron
#

you don't need measurements at these exact points in time

twin hound
pale sigil
#

"super fast 4g"

old marlin
#

that would be a good solution

pale sigil
old marlin
#

if they were to not only deploy 5G where 4G is already deployed

twin hound
#

But that's already happening

old marlin
#

and I have to fear that I don't get a mobile connection in my village in a few years

#

cause all the old stuff gets shut down

#

that is actually what is happenign atm for a lot of people in germany

pale sigil
#

Nein!

twin hound
#

Well starlink is also an option

old marlin
#

just 5 years ago I had 0 mobile connection

twin hound
#

But the thing is that there more companies doing that

old marlin
#

when I still lived at my moms place

twin hound
#

are*

old marlin
#

needs a shitton of sattelites

twin hound
#

Well that's not an argument

old marlin
#

the results are not bad for sattelites

pale sigil
#

Just 5 years ago I got my own connection to my room living at my mums place aPES_LulLaugh

misty saffron
#

really excited for 5g

old marlin
pale sigil
#

Longer than 5 but lols

twin hound
#

Dude look how many satellites

#

are there

old marlin
#

yes

#

now every provider on hte world put up a couple hundred more

pale sigil
#

@misty saffron you're Russian so you can't be counted in this argument

#

Russia is poo

old marlin
#

only 6k up rn

#

2666 in use atm

misty saffron
#

if not all

twin hound
#

I am in Greece and in my cottage I get 2G

misty saffron
#

you're really excited for 5g then aren't you

twin hound
#

and DSL of 2mbps which disconnects like a million times a day

old marlin
#

starlink phase 1 is planned for 1.5k satellites

twin hound
#

we have 5g in athens already

pale sigil
#

Isn't Greece like

#

Shit

old marlin
pale sigil
#

For technical stuff

old marlin
#

greece is like

#

bankrupt

misty saffron
old marlin
#

most of all

misty saffron
#

5g in big city just for show

#

while the rest of the country has 2g

old marlin
#

yea

twin hound
#

well athens has half the population of greece

old marlin
#

exactly what I meant

#

like

#

athens had 4G

#

now they have 5G

twin hound
#

But the thing is

old marlin
#

in germany 2G is mainly shut down by now

twin hound
#

I now get 3g/4g in my cottage

You have to understand that urbanized areas are going to get everything first
