Well, let the people chose at least

crisp granite
#

if I'm sentenced to life, I'm gonna go out of my way to make that really damn short

urban lynx
#

you probably did something incredibly despicable to get such a huge sentence in the first place. like, you know, actual murder

#

which in germany btw is limited to a max of 40 years afaik

umbral knot
#

I sadly don't live in Germany so if I murder somebody it's either life or death sentences

If you do not have the money to buy decent pc buy pls or Xbox. If you do, buy pc. If you want a console too, no reason to buy Xbox when you already have pc, but PS has a couple of exclusives which may be a reason

reef tundra
#

If you do not have the money to buy decent pc buy pls or Xbox
that sentence is breaking my brain

pale sigil
#

Considering the prices of xbox

#

Or ps

#

XD

#

No

crisp granite
#

considering the current price of consoles

#

getting a prebuilt is better in every way

pale sigil
#

You could easily guy a last gen second hand pc

#

That would murder current consoles

crisp granite
#

current GPU market go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

pale sigil
#

GPUs aren't a big issue when it comes to pre builds

crisp granite
#

I know

reef tundra

Imagine those fools selling their gpu before the 3000 series even launched

Lately I've been missing consoles

crisp granite

Still software. Idk how did Microsoft manage to make windows interface so terrible when they made Xbox so well

ashen spindle

that doesnt come from it being a pc though, that's more of an issue from not being pre builds that got no testing on it 😛

GM is going all electric

#

In like 30(?) years?

#

Or whatever their plan was

ivory geyser
#

I admit I am not sure what is going to cause more environmental damage at the end... fuel burning or all the car batteries that will get used up.

#

I wish they would have gone hydrogen instead of the electricity.

#

How is that gonna help?

neat oriole
#

Battery recycling will get a lot better by the time that happens

ivory geyser
#

It will happen in 5-10 years.

#

So it better get better real quick

neat oriole
#

Alternatively we make better batteries that don’t require a lot of rare earth metals

#

Maybe we turn to synthetic fuels for a while before going fully electric

#

Who knows

ivory geyser
#

Or we could use the the damn hydrogen you know

neat oriole
#

I think currently we can recycle about 80% of a lithium battery?

#

But it’s still relatively new stuff

ivory geyser
#

No idea

#

I admit I just heard it is an issue atm

#

Not sure HOW much of an issue it actually is

#

I havent read up enough on it

neat oriole
#

It absolutely is a problem that we need to face with electrification

#

Maybe not as much right now because there aren’t that many EVs still

ivory geyser
#

Hyyyyydrogeeeeeen

neat oriole
#

I want hydrogen to work as well

#

But we need to get a green grid before that becomes really viable

#

We have to be careful with synthetic fuels since it might encourage people to be more wasteful

#

But it could be a viable transitional energy source between now and several decades from now

#

Again, we need better infrastructure for any of this to really work out

#

Getting the grid off of fossil fuels would be the best start imo

Once vehicle to grid becomes widespread and utility controlled charging becomes a thing those spikes will go away

@frozen anchor @old marlin I was messing around in Osu! and realized I performed exceptionally well with 500Hz polling instead of 1kHz. I have no idea why
My attempted explanation is that 500 > 1000hz because it creates less after images. So the screen is more clear of mouse trails (increase visual clarity)
Theoretically 1000hz is obviously better than 500hz because less minimum latency.
What do you guys think? Also based on my 10+ benchmarks 500Hz BFI ON < 1000Hz BFI ON. This is only true when BFI is OFF

#

Also attempted to test in other cursor-based game like League and it feels the same way (although League doesn't have concrete scores so it's possible to be placebo)

old marlin
#

Trails are your screen

#

100% placebo otherwise

analog aspen
#

was talking about this

#

1000Hz polling mouse also create more after images than 500Hz

#

I feel like as a gamer I should "know" where my cursor is without looking for it? (noscope AWP, also Osu! top players that have size 0 cursor)
So more cursor images on the screen is just blocking estates of other things

#

Also cursor might be easier to see due to being less transparent in higher Hz

astral haven
#

top players with 0 size cursor are using absolute inputs of some kind not mice

astral haven
#

there arent any tablets over 250hz afaik 🤷‍♂️

analog aspen
#

Also my last theory is that the polling just takes less CPU power because Osu! And LoL are CPU-bound

astral haven
#

unlikely

analog aspen
#

Channel the RJN of Tablet @frozen anchor in here

astral haven
#

my tablet is 250

analog aspen
#

Yea I don’t know anything about tablet unfortunately

#

@astral haven what do you think

astral haven
#

tablet is absolute input

#

so hz doesnt matter as much as long as its over screen refresh

analog aspen
#

I mean about me performing better on Osu! on 500Hz. And possibly LoL

astral haven
#

probably placebo

analog aspen
#

Placebo for LoL sure

#

Osu! has score system

astral haven
#

🤷‍♂️ my best scores in osu were when i was testing random things out

analog aspen
#

But my guess is if it isn’t true I just got a really out of my mind moment

#

Like lucky

#

Idk

#

Basically I tested by playing a map I know well beyond my capability

astral haven
#

thats not scientific

analog aspen
#

But not too far that I can’t pass it with Relax on

#

Basically to push my tracking to the max

#

Since polling doesn’t do anything about click latency

astral haven
#

again you aint gonna find anything scientific

#

uh

#

wut

#

shouldnt be clicking with the mouse in osu...

analog aspen
#

Exactly

#

That’s why I said Relax mode

#

So that takes out the possibility of my left arm being a variable

#

It’s really whether I can make my mouse move to the right position at the right time

#

I also didn’t use headphone

#

So my tracking is purely eye to arm

astral haven
#

yea no thats not gonna work

#

you are changing faaar too much for you to have any consistency at that

analog aspen
#

What do you mean changing

#

I set up the test

#

Then I stick to it

#

I don’t change the settings in between

astral haven
#

like find a map that you consistently get the exact same accuracy every time you play with 1 set of settings

#

and it has to be at least 40 seconds drain time

analog aspen
#

No I specifically picked a map that I never/barely played on

#

So there’s no muscle memory involved as well

astral haven
#

🤦‍♂️

#

then how could you tell the difference between random variation and luck?

analog aspen
astral haven
#

drain time is time notes are on screen

#

its one of the stats in the top left

analog aspen
astral haven
#

over a minute its nearly impossible to get the exact same accuracy

analog aspen
#

There’s a sweet spot I guess

#

Too little and it’s inconsistent, too much and fatigue can kick in

#

That’s the only problem I worry about with that test

astral haven
#

what sort of acc were you getting with relax

analog aspen
#

~90%

astral haven
#

show me the scoreboard

analog aspen
#

I didnt keep the screenshots

#

I kept the scores in a note

#

Full score, max combo, and accuracy specifically

astral haven
#

what was the highest and lowest accuracy

#

and how many runs

analog aspen
#

Lowest was 80% when I started

#

Over 20

#

But I only kept track of ~10

#

After 10 I feel like fatigue kicked in

astral haven
#

uh

#

yea thats really not enough

#

use your most played song for example

analog aspen
#

One sec

#

Let me pull that up instead of talking numbers on top of my head xD

Honestly idk about the low hz idea

I've tried playing with 1000hz interpolated on tablet and it doesn't make a difference in the cursor trail which is really the only thing potentially distracting for me

frozen anchor

Can't confirm that though

astral haven

I have a question for yall tech heads

#

I'm thinking of taking an old computer and downloading a linux distro onto it called lakka, which is basically just a distro that lets you turn your pc or other mini computer into a glorified arcade cabinet

#

And I'm wondering if there would be a way to essentially set up the equivalent of steam's "remote play together" for such a device, such that I could play old games on it with a friend, but through the internet.

#

Like, basically a way to send controller inputs through the internet to my computer from some other place, and get the system to recognize those inputs as a second "local" controller for all intents and purposes

forest sphinx
#

Just looked up hamachi

#

Wait but like, for retro games the multiplayer support even for lan isn't great

#

thats why i'm asking if you could controller input forward

#

like, we could both have emulators, and both have the game, but if the emulator or even specific rom can't actually connect to anyone else via lan then hamachi or hamachi like programs are still useless right?

thick elk
#

Why not use remote play together? Steam works on linux, remote play together works on non steam games, so it should be possible.

only luck is making a bot that checks amd.com yourself

fickle ore
crisp granite
#

I mean

#

I think the main issue

#

is that you can't get your damn hands on one rn

#

any card available at MSRP will sell

#

even if it is absolute stagnation

ashen spindle
#

I take quasi-stagnation that has more than the gen before over getting scammed like rtx20xx series tbh

crisp granite
#

true

#

the RT performance on RTX 2000 is a joke

#

I was considering getting a 2080ti

#

for 1080p 60fps RT gaming lul

ashen spindle
#

like sure it is 30% more for 20% higher cost or what it is, they also literally couldn't make a better card with rdna1

#

so it's value stagnation, not really actual stagnation

crisp granite
#

which is fine

#

because at this point, the norms no longer apply

ashen spindle
#

ok but thats not the point

#

the pure rasterization perforamce was not in line with the cost upgrade

#

even if we were to take a cut off of the cost for rtx die area

crisp granite
#

cost doesn't matter at this point

#

any card at MSRP is a stellar value

ivory geyser
#

RTX is a waste of time, money and resources.

#

DLSS tho...

#

That is a completely different question

fickle ore
#

This gen is pretty big difference, but only because of gatekeeping SAM... The cards itself kinda mediocre over last gen but I'd take it. Yeah the 3060TI/6700 xt are greedily positioned

ashen spindle
#

gatekeeping SAM
wat

fickle ore
#

coz the fuckers wont release it for prior gen

#

If they released SAM for 1-2 prior gen it would be fine

#

heck I wouldnt upgrade then lol

thick elk
#

For me it's mostly I have quite a bit of money from work I have to spend on things like hardware and I wanted a decent step up, but I sure am not going to pay those insane prices for a 6800xt.
Maybe I should buy a valve index as I don't want this to stack up by too much.

ashen spindle
#

if you happen to play games that benefit it maybe

#

I have to disable it because I prefer not losing frames in Apex lol

fickle ore
#

that's why I used the phrase I

ashen spindle
#

also I don't really see it as gatekeeping when it wouldn't work stable

fickle ore
#

rtx isnt worth to me until it's not vendor specific

thick elk
#

I do expect prices on the high end to normalise at some point, be it still over msrp but not as bad as it is now.

crisp granite
#

rn, nothing is lul

#

just because everything comes pre-scalped

thick elk
#

Scalpers are just a symptom.

#

Right now the margin of distributors and stores are really high.

#

I really would not mind AMD and Nvidia raising their prices as long as there is a shortage.

#

Basically the whole chain does not compete on price anymore.

#

board partners are happy to sell their highest margin models, distrbutors can sell their stock anyway as can stores.

#

I personally think it's perfectly fair if in situations like this AMD just increases their selling price / msrp and slowly drops it as the market normalises.

#

It's simply the equilibrium price for supply and demand

#

if a store raises it higher there will be a cheaper card available, if they drop it they sell it instantly making less money.

ashen spindle
#

given that you can still sometimes buy them for the actual MSRP, no, the added cost is not effectively the msrp

fickle ore
#

tbh the only games im gonna play for 2020-2030 gonna be probably pantheon, diablo2RE, diablo4, OW so I can wait a long long time for prices to stabilize

thick elk
#

I really think, especially in case of AMD it would be for the best if they just increased the price at their end for a while. At the very least it gives them an incentive to prioritise the more lucrative gpu's more.
Same goes for nvidia to some extend.

ashen spindle
#

that would be msrp of an AiB then anyway peepoShrug

thick elk
#

The end user would not pay more if the price increases from the top down, just the margins of the whole chain below would go down.

#

However I do think contracts with board partners could prevent that.

ashen spindle
#

that and it doesnt make sense to ignore an entire segment you can win over, just to have some better earnings in a quarterly report

#

thats how intel ended up where they are atm

zenith sonnet
ashen spindle
#

by chasing report numbers over longterm plans

thick elk
#

Maximum prices don't really work. As long as demand outweighs supply there will always be scalpers to rectify that.

#

Honestly I mostly just dislike the way Nvidia operates with their drive to control everything. AMD and Intel are much better in that regard. That would be my reason to prefer them over Nvidia. The main reason I want to buy an AMD card as my next gpu is simply because I don't want to deal with nvidia linux drivers.

ashen spindle
#

but why should I give a shit about RTX when I want raster performance BlueBreadThinking not like they have a non rtx option so I could ignore it

#

ofc I only look at rasterization performance then

#

16 series has something I can upgrade to from a 1080?

#

would be news to me

zenith sonnet
#

How much of the price hike do we actually owe to TSMC, not AMD? I reckon it's not a small slice

ashen spindle
