@neat oriole do you know what a good replacement for sennheiser 180 would be? just looking for potential replacements since I don't trust mine to last a lot longer

neat oriole
#

Could always get a tin T2 plus

ashen spindle
#

nah I hate in-ears

neat oriole
#

Oh I thought the 180 was an iem

#

What’s your budget then

ashen spindle
#

uhh, honestly no clue, I dont need super expensive stuff, wireless and same comfort is what I'm mainly looking at

#

think I paid like 190 for them in 2013?

neat oriole
#

Wireless stuff is difficult to recommend

#

Maybe an AKG K361/371 BT?

#

If you want more features could always just get a Sony WH1000XM3 or w/e

ashen spindle
#

hmm most of them look like they dont have fabric ear pads or w/e it's called, but there are probably options to change that

neat oriole
#

Yeah generally speaking you want to stick with whatever pads came on the headphones since they affect the sound a lot

zenith sonnet
#

Like, beard or whatever is under the pads

ashen spindle
#

well I dont like the feeling of uhh, let me find a picture bc idk what the material actually is

neat oriole
#

Honestly not sure, I assume not much unless you have long hair and wear headphones over your hair

#

Or there’s so much hair it breaks the seal

ashen spindle
#

these things I like

#

this not really

neat oriole
#

There are aftermarket velour pads for the Sony

ashen spindle
#

ahh velour, right

neat oriole
#

And on those honestly they’re not great to begin with so pad rolling probably won’t make them worse

ashen spindle
#

pad rolling is when they are not 100% tight anymore bc it got removed and such?

neat oriole
#

Nah pad rolling is just swapping pads

ashen spindle
#

ah lol weird term

neat oriole
#

Yeah idk why it’s called that

#

But there’s also ā€œtube rollingā€ for swapping the vacuum tubes on tube amps

ashen spindle
#

yeah I have neither dac nor amp

#

well, the sennheiser station thing might have it included? idk

neat oriole
#

Is there a reason you don’t want to do wired?

#

Well all wireless headphones have their own built in dac and amp

#

Along side with radio/Bluetooth receivers and senders

ashen spindle
#

much more comfortable, I can go around the house while not missing stuff, or now during homeoffice I can get food and not worry missing a notification etc.

#

it's just super comfortable

zenith sonnet
neat oriole
#

But idk honestly

neat oriole
ashen spindle
#

they look good yea, but urgh, alexa built in?

neat oriole
#

I don’t think so

#

Mine doesn’t have alexa

#

Are you looking at the WH1000XM4?

neat oriole
#

Hmmm they do support whatever voice assistance you use on your device, but mine doesn’t have Alexa integrated

#

So I’m not sure

zenith sonnet
ashen spindle
#

well I'll write that down as they do seem like a good option, and look into that a bit, maybe non-amazon sites sell them without that trash

neat oriole
#

My only problem with Bluetooth is it sucks on windows for me

zenith sonnet
#

If I wear them properly, there's mostly a seal

ashen spindle
#

yeah personally I wish I could just by the hdr180 again, but ofc they had to discontinue them and I dont think any other model works with the basestation I have

neat oriole
#

Iirc those were radio based weren’t they?

#

So it probably works a lot better than Bluetooth on it’s own

ashen spindle
#

peepoShrug I got no clue

neat oriole
#

If you have a bit more money to spare maybe check out the Audeze penrose

#

It’s a pretty good sounding gaming headset

#

Only downside is short battery life

#

Only 10 hours or something

ashen spindle
#

yeah that wouldnt work for me

neat oriole
#

Or you could probably get a Bluetooth receiver and strap it on to some regular headphones

ashen spindle
#

just looking around incase I need it anyway, maybe I get lucky and these things hold me some more years

#

but thanks for the recommendations šŸ™‚

neat oriole
#

Something like a Radsone ES100 and then maybe a sennheiser HD560S

#

You just tuck the Bluetooth receiver into your pocket

#

It means you’re not stuck to not great sounding consumer Bluetooth headphones

You can use whatever you want with them

oh, the base station is called "radio station" so yea I guess it's radio not bluetooth lol

ashen spindle
#

@neat oriole ah I guess one thing, do you know where I could ask/look for something like mods or other compatible things for the sennheiser station I have? like some forum or reddit? If I can reuse it and would not need to trash it, I'd prefer that

#

idk if that's a thing

neat oriole
#

There probably aren’t many mods for them out there but maybe headfi? Those wireless sennheisers never really caught on

ashen spindle

yeah didnt really see them anywhere

neat oriole

ashen spindle

I mean mine are going strong for 8 years now, im only looking at options in case they die

#

and the part that worries me is the plastic arc holding it together, nothing about the wireless

neat oriole

Sennheiser plastic is pretty solid

@digital cliff sorry, was busy with life: can't say i've had that problem before, so not sure why it's occuring. did you try it on another instance by chance? part of the problem may also be the js player. tor is also known for just killing connections randomly, even when they're in the process of doing something (aka connection reset or something of the like). honestly, it sounds like you might be better off with one of those desktop youtube players. last time i checked there were plenty that exists on both windows and linux, just gotta find them.

cursive summit

Not the bass boosted shit but genuine good bass

neat oriole

cursive summit

Anything like that in the 200-350$ area?

It’s one of the few good bassy closed backs

It’s built like trash but you’re paying for that sound

If you want something like it but built a bit better you move up to EMU Teaks

#

Which start at $450 with a $50 add on for removable cables

cursive summit

pale sigil

I'm still debating between HD650, 6XX, Sundaras, 1990s and K712s

#

Need a pair I'll likely never replace unless broken

neat oriole
#

If reliability is a concern get 650/6XX

#

1990s sibilant af

#

712 not bad and it’s really cheap in EU

#

Has a coloured tonality but it EQs pretty well

#

Sundara is pretty good too as long as you get the newer ones

#

But reliability wise it’s kinda hit or miss

cursive summit
#

Sounds like Sundaras are best šŸ˜„

neat oriole
#

I’d say the 2 safer choices here is either the 650/6XX or Sundara

cursive summit
#

I heard Sundaras sound better right?

#

Thing is, is it even worth upgrading from K371s anymore for any meaningful change

#

I already think these are good headphones

#

Maybe just slap an amp and a dac on these and call it a day?

neat oriole
#

Sundaras aren’t necessarily better just different

#

It has slightly better bass extension and is overall more ā€œanalyticalā€ sounding, but you give up the more accurate timbre and more dynamic sound

#

650/6XX also have better scaling and works with tube amps whereas sundaras don’t

#

It really comes down to what you want

cursive summit
#

Why don't Sundaras work with tubes?

neat oriole
#

A lot of it comes down to output impedance issues

#

Tube amps generally have really high OI and it fucks the sound of the sundaras

#

650/6XX being a high impedance headphone aren’t really affected by the high OI of tube amps

#

If anything most tube amps will bring up the bass slightly on the 6XX/650

cursive summit
#

So as for this point

neat oriole
#

If I’m being completely honest

#

K371 and 361 are pretty mediocre headphones in the grand scheme of things, they only stand out because their competition is white hot trash

#

Like I said there’s like 4 or 5 good closed backs under $1000

#

Closed backs are just hard to make

cursive summit
#

Ngl I don't hear too much difference between the Takstar Pro 80s and the K371

#

There's some extra detail on the 371 but not that much

#

Sound stage is wider but again, not that much

#

If I were to spend money again, it should be a pretty massive change šŸ˜„

neat oriole
#

I mean if you like bass you could try CALs or even IEMs

#

IEMs usually seal way better so the bass is a lot more impactful in most cases

#

And CALs just slam hard

cursive summit
#

Again not really gonna pay for a sidegrade

#

My income's not on the high side

#

Something makes me think maybe saving up for something really high end like a second hand Focal Clear is the right choice

neat oriole
#

Clear is good

#

Only thing bad about it is the replacement pads are $200 a pair

cursive summit
#

I saw second hand Clears going for 800$

#

Will take a few months getting that amount but we'll get there lul

neat oriole
#

New Clears have been released

#

So old clears will probably come down in price

cursive summit
#

Clears will prolly need a pretty strong DAC to run em right?

neat oriole
#

Not really

#

You can drive them with an Apple dongle

#

They’re pretty easy to drive

#

But I mean a $200 schiit stack or atom stack will be plenty

cursive summit
#

Hm, here I thought I'll need even more monez for the Topping D50

neat oriole
#

D50 not really worth unless you want bluetooth

cursive summit
#

Weird, that DAC is generally well received

neat oriole
#

It’s ok

#

But I personally don’t think it’s a significant enough of an upgrade

#

Nah not Sony

#

If you want high end closed backs you go ZMF

#

Or Fostex

#

K371 is better in that price range

#

The Fostex TRX00 was $320 at one point and that slams

#

Shame it’s discontinued and now goes for $600 on eBay

#

But I mean EMU teaks are $450-$500

#

Those are great

#

None of Sony’s recent stuff have been competitive really

#

No not the T50

#

Those suck

#

I’m talking about stuff like the TH-610 or 900

cursive summit
#

Hold up

#

So, if this is still going

#

I won't need to pay for customs

#

Ah yeah that's over lul

neat oriole
#

Yeah they ended that like two years ago?

#

Not enough people bought it to justify the costs I guess

cursive summit
#

Is the Drop 02 amp for 85$ even good? šŸ˜„

neat oriole
#

Nah

#

Just spend $15 more and get an atom

#

Or Magni 3+

cursive summit
#

Heh

#

Looks like

#

With shipping I will be paying 57 euros customs

#

So total is

#

For the 6XXs in EUR

#

Might not be that bad to actually get the 6XXs

neat oriole
#

I mean

#

650 is €280

#

And you’ll have way better customer support

#

Since sennheiser doesn’t actually handle any of the support requests for drop sennheiser products

cursive summit
#

Isn't the 650 an older product and objectively worse? šŸ˜„

neat oriole
#

What?

#

Where did you hear that bullshit

cursive summit
#

Aren't the 6XX's derived off the 650s?

misty pier
#

i kinda want to try out the hd560s

neat oriole

No they’re repainted 650s

#

Exactly the same thing as a 650 but blue and cheaper if you’re in NA

#

And also nicer box

#

But sound wise identical

#

Age doesn’t matter

#

HD600 is like 24 years old

#

And the closest thing to an overall upgrade is $1200

#

650 a bit younger at 18 years old, again still one of the best headphones under $1000

cursive summit
#

So 650s are better than the 600s right?

neat oriole

Different

#

650 a bit warmer

#

600 a bit more ā€œneutralā€

They’re pretty similar

127 kbps might sound very low but Opus is really very good and doesn't need a whole lot of bits to sound good

It doesn't sound good on YT though.

are the cables different?

they only go in one way

crimson wigeon

oh ok then

reef patrol

I've shown you pics before xD

cursive summit
#

Bigger one is power smaller one is data

#

Both are shaped like check marks āœ…

wheat plume
#

It comes with the power SATA cables

I had to buy a data one

reef tundra
#

SATA specifies a different power connector than the four-pin Molex connector used on Parallel ATA (PATA) devices (and earlier small storage devices, going back to ST-506 hard disk drives and even to floppy disk drives that predated the IBM PC). It is a wafer-type connector, like the SATA data connector, but much wider (fifteen pins versus seven) to avoid confusion between the two. Some early SATA drives included the four-pin Molex power connector together with the new fifteen-pin connector, but most SATA drives now have only the latter.

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

ahh right

same on my hard drive

I think Vio misspoke. It didn't come with Sata data cable šŸ˜„

tbh, at first i thought the search function would be useful. like a quick search from my computer.
but the function is bloody useless

i'm faster going through my drives via the file explorer than this search function

sudden glacier

can't you already access it by opening start menu and starting typing?

ashen spindle

its pointless bc you get the search anyway by clicking the startmenu or just hit windows key

sudden glacier

what's the difference between clicking on search vs clicking on start menu

ashen spindle

you start with the search UI

ashen spindle

so I guess for people who dont know you can do it that way

ivory geyser

how the fuck can people work with just putting whatever shit onto the desktop?

sudden glacier

ashen spindle

nope, I dont even know what's in my startmenu

ivory geyser
urban lynx

also tbf, i dont really work on this pc.

KEKLEO

ivory geyser

ashen spindle

Documents folder is useless, it has all kinds of fucking apps saving into it.

sudden glacier

true quest

k

ivory geyser

Yea they shouldnt.

#

But they do

urban lynx
#

then what is "desktop" ???

reef patrol
#

Shouldn't save what... documents into documents? They absolutely should imo. Not a fan of apps sneaking into %appdata% though (Looking at Chrome, Spotify and others)

sudden glacier
#

yea i prefer when my user settings are easily accessible from games

ivory geyser
reef patrol
#

They're a kind of document.

ivory geyser
#

Yes they ARE, but programs dont GIVE A fuck.

urban lynx
#

to me using the file explorer view is much smarter.
has all the info like last edited and shit on better listing, than the desktop itself

ivory geyser
#

They do it anyway

reef tundra
#

They document your failures

ivory geyser
#

So that whole folder is useless.

reef patrol
#

And to be fair Microsoft DID make a folder for game saves specifically but almost no one uses it šŸ˜„

sudden glacier
#

rocket league uses it in my case

#

very rarely games use it

reef patrol

I know of two games that use it.

Outer Worlds and Kingdom Come.

ivory geyser

There is fucking "Microsoft hardware" in that folder....

there's even a folder for games in your user folder

steam should tell devs to use that folder

You have one in your user folder. That's it.

urban lynx
vagrant pagoda

there is the documents library

#

and a documents folder

reef patrol
#

Oh you're thinking of that old "shared documents" stuff-.

urban lynx
#

tbf. i try to keep as much OUT of my C drive, as possible

reef patrol
#

Documents has always been user specific.

#

That's... the one everyone's been talking about the entire time? What have YOU been talking about? šŸ˜„

urban lynx
#

the last shown screenshot above is under my (user) folder.

reef patrol
#

We don't? Games put their shit there šŸ˜„

vagrant pagoda
#

@digital cliff you are confusion the documents library with the documents folder

#

starting in NT

#

documents/mydocuments is a library

reef patrol
#

Never heard of it.

vagrant pagoda
#

and it generally points to /user/name/documents

#

you can change it

sudden glacier
#

mine points to one-drive so i keep my stuff with me between pc and laptop

reef patrol
#

But that just changes the location of the documents folder.

#

Your games will break if you do that without moving their data with it.

#

And start placing new shit there.

vagrant pagoda
#

that is the properties for the document library

vagrant pagoda
reef patrol
#

I moved my entire user folder to F:

reef patrol
#

We can't all avoid playing video games or using Microsoft Office. Sadly šŸ˜„

ashen spindle
#

"the tools you show are not ones I used, so I'm very confused why I never saw them on my pc" is what you are saying essentially

vagrant pagoda
#

thats the technical terms

reef patrol
#

Your screenshot calls it the Documents folder, the OS refers to it as the documents folder.

#

If you want to be pedantic by all means. šŸ˜„

#

Regardless - Moving the "documents library" simply puts your Documents folder somewhere else. Windows (and apps) will still store whatever they feel like there.

halcyon moss
#

%appdata%

reef patrol
#

It becomes even more fun when apps hardlink to a location. Like how Paradox Interactive insists on using C: users. It doesn't respect relinks or %username/documents%

crimson wigeon
#

Libraries are a feature introduced in Windows 7 basically letting you have a folder that has the contents of many folders.. Windows 10 has libraries hidden by default and reverted to showing only the singular folders because barely anyone used libraries

vagrant pagoda
#

the fun thing is after xp they dropped My from my douments every where the user can see

#

but internally its still mydocuments

reef patrol
#

Windows is a big old mess.

crimson wigeon
#

Yes in the name of backwards compatibility with poorly written apps there are a lot of invisible links like that

#

Just like how Documents and Settings invisibly links to Users

reef patrol
#

It insists on having 32bit specific app folders, it insists on using three different subfolders for Appdata that no developers or users seem to understand or respect šŸ˜„

#

And lets not even get started on REGEDIT.

Why ryzen? You already have ARM based hardcore in fpgas

#

I believe its the ZYNQ line or somethin

#

Even an dualcore Cortex-A9. tsss

astral haven
#

the amd patent is about even closer integration

zenith sonnet
#

I think they will integrate FPGA capabilities into their Zen cores at some point

#

xeanoa the instinct cards are only useful for fp64, and eth doesnt need that

zenith sonnet
#

It's basically reprogrammable hardware accelleration

reef tundra
#

They are very closely integrated on the Zynq. its baked in the FPGA mesh fabric

astral haven
#

its not about the compute vs memory bandwidth itself, it just doesnt need fp64

#

thats not that closely attached panda

zenith sonnet
#

Then make an FP64 based coins rooNom

reef tundra
#

Otherwise it would make no sense and they would keep it an softcore processor completely made up by the fpga matrix

#

fpgas are programmable lookup tables in the end

astral haven
#

like we arent talking about putting it in here

#

we are talking about putting it here

reef tundra
#

They put the ARM core onto the FPGA core. so it can interface with its IO and use it however it wants

astral haven
#

yea panda

#

thats what the first one is

#

thats not what amd is trying to do

#

they are throwing it in the back end of the cpu
