I don't do audio memes

#

I just want a really good product

neat oriole
#

Then just wait for schiit restock

#

If it’s actually good I’ll probably start shilling it like I shill the dongle

#

But as of right now it’s got big “flavour of the month” vibes so I’d stay away for now

#

Just be patient

#

Things in the audiophile community that are actually good tend to stay good for a long time

#

Just look at the sennheiser HD600 it’s almost 30 years old and it’s still one of the best dynamic headphones under $500

frozen vale
#

Forgot how pretty Shiit's stuff is

neat oriole
#

Used to sound pretty schiit too

#

But the newer revisions addressed a lot of the problems people had

#

So it’s good schiit now

frozen vale
#

maybe someday when I decide to upgrade from my Bheringer umc204hd...

neat oriole
#

Could get a Motu M2

#

And they stack a schiit Magni 3+ on top

frozen vale
#

not a bad price on the M2

neat oriole
#

M2 is pretty good

#

Headphone output isn’t super powerful but it’s pretty clean

#

Mic amp is good

#

Has a nice little display

halcyon moss
#

it runs fine on everything i;ve tried

#

(I have the DT 770 pro 80ohm on my head right now)

misty saffron
#

you can’t tell me you get good volume

#

with high volume actually being high

halcyon moss
#

uh its almost always way too looud

wheat plume
#

oop

halcyon moss
#

especially on my laptop

#

25% is comfortable

misty saffron
#

interesting...

wheat plume
#

I keep my headphones about 40-50% and thats fine for me

halcyon moss
#

my in ears i need to go even lower though

wheat plume
#

I just learned about "Testacular" :')

#

why that name?? freaking hell

#

package-lock.json being a casual 13634 lines of code

halcyon moss
#

errr. does that mean it has 13k dependencies?

crimson wigeon
#

Well it's probably some JS shit so yes

wheat plume
#

not quite

#

id say about 10k dependencies

wheat plume
#

I cant find a good explaination for what the difference in these files is :/
package-lock.json and package.json

halcyon moss
#

lock is what you lock the version of the deps to

crimson wigeon
#

The lock is for ensuring you get the right versions

halcyon moss
#

so every install would ahve the same deps

#

package.json is more liberal in the versions used

#

so.. installs might not be the same

wheat plume
#

hmmm.

wheat plume
#

cant delete MY OWN FUCKING project

#

help

reef tundra
#

sudo

wheat plume
#

mmm very helpfl advice for windows

reef tundra
#

uninstall windows and install an unix instead

wheat plume
#

:P

#

I dual boot lel

halcyon moss
#

dont do this on a company owned machine

wheat plume
#

I havent got one of those

#

I didnt even meet anyone from the work in person yet

halcyon moss
#

i dont know how it is in ireland, but in NL they cant force you to work on your own hardware :p

wheat plume
#

I am using my own computer despite needing to have signed an NDA :')

reef tundra
#

Damned Unions always giving workers rights ree

wheat plume
#

they no give me laptop or whatever

#

My friend did get a laptop from work though
He has to use that

halcyon moss
#

nda are quite common right? as is signing over the (copy)rights on stuff you create during work

reef tundra
#

NDA is just that you wont disclose trade secrets

ashen spindle
#

NDA in general has nothing to do with using your own hardware or not gloryT

halcyon moss
#

indeed

wheat plume
#

NDA in my case means I cant share any documents from work

ashen spindle
#

yes

wheat plume
#

not sure if the code is considered a document or not

reef tundra
#

yes, as it is a file

wheat plume
#

flashbacks to a few months ago where we had to paste our code into a word doc to send to the lecturer

reef tundra
#

hand in a latex document instead

wheat plume
#

She wouldnt understand wtf it was :')

ashen spindle
#

usually NDA's are quite clear or they can be legally invalid

#

but again, usually just details what you can share or not, I still dont see how that relates to using work hardware

#

unless it stated you are not allowed to transfer it to not authorised devices or smth?

reef tundra
#

Allowing workers to use their own hardware means that you run the risk of security vurnabilities leaking your secrets and unable to do anything about it. Even allowing the worker to intentionally leak it and hide behind this

halcyon moss
#

So, im freelancing, and i need to provide my own hardware in this case, but i am required to have full harddisk encryption

#

and nda, eventhough its all opensource

ashen spindle
#

sure there are multiple valid options, but in this case it's a internship of a student, I heavily doubt many of these places would even give a student access to something that needs that much security :p

halcyon moss
#

you can look at my shitty code on github!

ashen spindle
#

god im glad it's like another year before my code has to be public lmao

#

it's such a mess

reef tundra
#

Freelancing is legally distinct from employee.

wheat plume
#

my friend works for a bank, they require him to only use the laptop they gave him to login for work
and to use their VPN conection to make sure its actually him while connected

halcyon moss
#

soudns normal

ashen spindle
#

ok, to be clear, did your NDA state your workplace will give you hardware or that you need seperate hardware?

wheat plume
#

no

#

just mentions I wont share documents

#

its two lines of my work contract

reef tundra
#

That is pretty vague and could be unenforceble in some juristictions

halcyon moss
#

then normal law applies

#

oh wait.. i am assuming NL law, which is different from IE law

ashen spindle
#

ok, you said "despite signing an NDA", so that implied your NDA includes you getting hardware :p

wheat plume
#

it doesnt xd

#

its literally 2 lines of the 5 page work contract

reef tundra
#

That is a tiny contract lmao

wheat plume
#

wow xdf

reef tundra
#

The smallest contract I had to sign was like 30 pages

wheat plume
#

o.o

reef tundra
#

signature at every page

#

As proof that I had seen and acknowledged every page. So you dont get the senario of having the contract expanded after the fact

wheat plume
#

oh wtf

urban lynx
#

y'all got large contracts

#

mine was like two pages

halcyon moss
#

25 poages for my current contract

wheat plume
#

:')

wheat plume
#

yeah, but I like wh en he uses something other than windows

#

holy fuckign shit did you just say?

reef tundra
#

eh, scammers bad

ashen spindle
#

die size and die failure rate is interresting, shows how many wafers the console chips really take away from xen3/rdna2 production

reef tundra
reef patrol
wheat plume
#

Does it have to be lynx?

#

Cause that stuff smells like shit

crisp granite
#

true that

#

the "gold" scent especially

wheat plume
#

Yeh....

crisp granite
#

even then, that stuff makes me gag, regardless of stench profile

wheat plume
#

I'd rather smell like fruit than that garbage

Fruit smells great

they were about to start on leilani when fissure 8 consumed half the neighborhood

dunno where things are at these days

#

i miss the rain, im in the dry side of washington now

300 inches annually to 15 inches... rough change

#

but hey, no blasted centipedes

#

indeed. we had a handful show up in leilani. not too bad though. stayed over in milolii on the dry side for a spell though, and omg. they were everywhere

#

you know whats dumb? i miss the frogs. and the geckos.

oh boi....its so different

ivory geyser

I dont like how it overflows the screen

Noooo sir lol

wheat plume

The app windows overflowing the desktop preview?

#

Thats the same on ElementaryOS also

ivory geyser
#

Got a screen/video of it?

wheat plume
wheat plume
#

wait, It doesnt overflow? maybe thats deepin instead

ivory geyser
#

Well that looks much better KEKW

wheat plume
#

YEP

#

Pantheon is such a pretty desktop

#

Such a shame its so hard to get working outside of ElementaryOS ;-;

ivory geyser
#

What is wrong with ElementaryOS?

wheat plume
#

its super slow at updates
Their release cycle is like one release every 3 years

ivory geyser
#

Oof

crimson wigeon
#

Speaking of slow updates
it's new glibc time that means rebuild all the packages!
3334 packages to upgrade, 2 new, 1 to reinstall, 1 to remove. ah shit here we go again

proud nacelle
#

3334
Jesus why do you have so many packages

crimson wigeon
#

Install all the things! But it's also an inflated count since what some distro might have in just 1 package this has in 10

#

Also a lot of random libs and such that I installed to compile something and then forgot about

proud nacelle
#

sounds like you need to clean up your packages. also what distro, if you don't mind me asking?

crimson wigeon
#

openSUSE Tumbleweed

proud nacelle
#

So it is. Well, at least you don't have to compile all those packages.

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah I don't really miss Gentoo

#

I mean I do but not the compile everything aspect

proud nacelle
#

Nope. Gentoo is heading in a terrible direction anyway.

#

I'll have to jump ship soon.

crimson wigeon
#

I have been thinking about trying something different sooner or later, like Nix

proud nacelle
#

Heard about it. Seems nice, but haven't tried it yet.

proud nacelle
#

Stupid question: Would anyone know if DDR3 mac pro ram is compatible with regular motherboards?

reef patrol
#

Sure?

#

It's usually the other way that's an issue. Macs can be a bit picky about RAM.

proud nacelle
#

Right... Is it unbuffered by any chance? If not, I'll just have to keep digging until I find something suitable.

#

I guess I should explain myself if anyone is interested, but I'm looking for DDR3 ECC unbuffered ram for an AM3+ system. Amazon has given me 0 results which are correct, and mac ram for whatever reason keeps appearing. If that works, I'll just grab that instead. Ebay has some results, but I haven't had good experiences with it in the past.

ashen spindle
#

is your system even able to run ecc ram

proud nacelle
#

Yes. I've verified in the BIOS and the manual for the mobo.

#

It's an iffy topic though. AM3+ chips support it, but motherboards weren't required to.

ashen spindle
proud nacelle
#

So my understanding is that even if the option is there, there's no guarantee it's actually using it? What the hell.

#

Well that makes me wonder if it's even worth getting ECC ram then. Would I just be better off buying a newer system instead?

ashen spindle
#

why do you even want ECC

proud nacelle
#

Reliability really. I'll be switching to a AM4 in not too long, and I wanted to convert this one into a server.

#

Hell not even reliability, but accuracy

ashen spindle
#

ok then, what is it you want to do on the server that you need it

proud nacelle
#

Gonna be using it as NAS. Also gonna be running a HTTP daemon of sorts. Might also toss an FTP in there as well as a VM.

#

Not quite sure why you're asking though.

ashen spindle
#

yeah you're gonna have 5 power outages/issues before you get an ECC saveable error there, not really worth the hassle unless you happen to get some imo

proud nacelle
#

I'm not worried about power outages, I'm worried about bitflips.

ashen spindle
#

I know, I am saying those are way more likely

proud nacelle
#

If the system goes down, I don't care (because it's gonna be family content). What I do care is if some images or videos I upload get fucked on the way there.

#

I am aware

#

Anyway, mobo is a sabertooth 990fx r2.0. If anyone has experience with it and can confirm ECC actually works, I'd appreciate it. If not, I'll just have to take a risk and try it.

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

mansen we are talking about DDR3, and I know what it is, I was asking about his specific usecase xd

#

and yes, 8bit error correction is part of the ddr5 spec

reef tundra
#

Nice

reef patrol
#

I still can't stop giggling at those 1x1 pixel tracking cookies.

wheat plume
#
ashen spindle
#

welcome to, 2010 I guess?

#

probably even earlier

#

like I'm glad it for whatever reason gets more attention, but that is far from being new or unknown xD

reef patrol
#

I give it a couple of weeks before both Google and Mozilla force it away 😄

ashen spindle
#

yeah I guess more attention means the browser will have to deal with it instead of the user needing plugins

reef tundra
#

its a nice PUP not malware i promise

reef patrol
#

Like... asking for a favicon every time Chrome visits a site, without telling the server it already has it. And then caching it outside of the normal standards for bookmarks.

#

You can't track my favicons if I have NO favicons.

crimson wigeon
reef tundra
#

Linux is safer yet again

#

Safety by obscurity ftw

ashen spindle
#

yea, the linux version is safer when the linux version doesn't exist KEKWDisco

crimson wigeon
#

I do wonder why browsers aren't consistent across operating systems though thonk

reef tundra
#

Different way of interfacing with the operating system. But that is mostly concern for the browser engine

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

..lana

#

please

crimson wigeon
#

I dunno, not being vulnerable to this seems pretty decent to me

reef tundra
#

Its bloat

#

So good that brave doesnt include it

proud nacelle
#

I could have sworn this wasn't news to anyone.

#

I remember hearing about it ages ago

#

If you don't want to deal with favicons : don't bookmark stuff. Or go use a text based browser or something.

#

Or use a non-existing magical fix it all browser.

urban lynx
#

... bookmarking stuff?

proud nacelle
#

As in, don't bookmark links.

#

Also it's funny people care about this when there are many other worse leaks currently existing.

#

Like, for example, using chrome.

urban lynx
#

uh, you talking to someone who hasnt bookmarked a thing in her browser for years

reef patrol
#

🤨

wheat plume
#

I dont bookmark, I just keep tab open :')

proud nacelle
#

I find that hard to believe.

#

But good on you if that's true.

urban lynx
#

if my computer wasnt off, i'd show you, lol

wheat plume
#

my computer isnt off but in the wrong OS to show you

urban lynx
#

also, lana can confirm: instead of bookmark. i just leave tabs open

#

lol

proud nacelle
#

But tabs close when the browser closes.

wheat plume
#

nah

#

you can tell it not to close them

proud nacelle
#

Oh you're using that? Jesus

urban lynx
#

ever heard of "reopen tabs"?

proud nacelle
#

I have, but my goodness was that awful back then. Swore to never use it.

urban lynx
#

my 386 tabs would like to know your location

proud nacelle
#

Just save the webpages

#

For crying out loud

#

What happens if the profile gets corrupt?

#

Not to mention, those tabs don't actively get saved (last time I check it keeps track of the url, but doesn't keep the content of it). So you're sending a request every time.

#

now i that i am older and more exhausted due to work, i dont manage as easily

also the weekend cyberpunk released? i put in about 46h from friday to sunday evening. actively.

ah yes

Just Dance and Dance Central are literally the only games I have played that work 100% flawlessly with the Kinect
Even Microsoft's own games have issues with it

no because the pcie4 issue is seperate

they are talking about both

ashen spindle

but maybe it leads to a common root cause

#

also the issue jsut being on usb3 ports seems like a different issue

fickle ore
#

idk its a mess. like for example on 1.9.0.0 I had no issues with drop-outs but installed 1.2.0.0 and first thing booting in bios I could barely move my mouse. It was gone after increasing FCLK -> which increased SOC voltage so I feel like it may be related to voltage somehow but idk

ashen spindle
#

definitely has multiple issues yea

fickle ore
#

1.9.0.0 had no issues with c-states on for me, but 1.2.0.0 c-states couldve been the issue. its all over lmao

ashen spindle
#

really hope they can find more new devs so that they can a) fix this and b) not have similar issues once AM5 arrives

fickle ore
#

shit actually, u know what changed

#

from 16gb to 32gb ram.. that was the catalyst for mouse not really working properly at stock setting

#

#

hmm hmm.

wheat plume
#

oo, thats not a bad idea, to start in that screen

rugged pelican
#

Maybe I'll have to consider going back to gnome again thonk

#

Recently switched back to KDE

wheat plume
#

:P

#

WM are neat but I dont want to spend the time to setup the many config files for everything

rugged pelican
#

I tried the WM life for a while a couple years ago, got a bit fed up with it

#

have resorted to the DE simplicity with tiling WM plugins

wheat plume
#

I like gnome desktop a lot
but they way it handles QT apps is janky

rugged pelican
#

yeah, is kinda similar with KDE & gtk apps, but at least in that case they have a bit more built-in support for gtk

#

never really bothered me either way tho

#

once I got themes all set up properly then it was grand

wheat plume
#

I think GTK apps in Plasma work and look perfectly fine

rugged pelican
#

yea, helps a lot that they actually have built in theming for gtk

wheat plume
#

^^ Yep

#

Im using Kvantum to set QT theme on gnome currently :/

rugged pelican
#

oof

#

I think with my last gnome setup I just didn't even bother lul

wheat plume
#

Dont blame you :')

rugged pelican
#

can't really beat kde system settings tho, miles ahead of gnome settings

wheat plume
#

I wanna go back to Plasma, but it doesnt like nvidia GPUs very well

rugged pelican
#

the fact that you need tweaks to even access some necessary settings is a bit ridiculous

wheat plume
#

I fear it will be worse on 5.21 cause they focused on Wayland more than anything else

#

Plasma: no like nvidia gpu
Wayland: no like nvidia gpu

rugged pelican
#

oh yea, I'm currently running with an old nvidia gpu from a mate til I can get my sweet sweet amd gpu. Is a bit annoying, but only issue I really get now is vscode terminal sessions and some apps corrupting like fuck when I wake from sleep

wheat plume
#

🤔 my issues on Plasma is stuttery mouse movement in game and some games crash after about an hour

#

doing anything else is fine

rugged pelican
#

🤔

crimson wigeon
#

I'll def give the G another shot too but I probably won't end up using it since I'm too lazy to figure out how to port my wlroots/sway hacks to it

wheat plume
#

👀

rugged pelican
#

haven't got that, only thing I got with games was csgo fps randomly going in the shitter til I switched window modes after a couple matches. But a mate of mine got that on a similar nvidia gpu and he defo wasn't on plasma

#

ngh hackerman

crimson wigeon
#

Same with the Plasma although they actually seem to want to have the ability for fullscreen'd games to have proper vsync off so my hacks probably not necessary in the future

wheat plume
#

you can already turn vsync off for fullscreen apps

crimson wigeon
#

Wayland throws a wrench into that since as far as I know all compositors (except my hacked sway) enforce vsync regardless

wheat plume
#

o

rugged pelican
#

am looking forward to the day when wayland can actually fully replace xorg

wheat plume
#

yep xd

crimson wigeon
#

Maybe soon they'll finally come to an agreement on basic shit like letting apps grab global hotkeys reeee

wheat plume

oh, speaking of Plasma 5.21
I need to upgrade to that on my laptop

Thats what I get for not running updates for 3 weeks .-.

Or maybe I'll stay with this setup forever and keep piling on the hacks and eventually make it a full on DE kind of system

I think I might try out linux on my pc one day, but only once they finally add solid SR-IOV etc. so I can just use looking glass when needed

not bothering with it till then

Idk what that is!

Hopefully sometime this century..

nvidia originally said ampere would have it

intel actually has promising stuff in the pipeline with oneAPI

So all they are selling is their wireless division?

Then I guess that's not as important as their professional audio products

I think so. Stuff like the HD600/650/800S are under the pro audio division iirc

PSP when I was 10/11

Afterwards when it got an overhaul in 2011 (didn't have any knowledge of PC's back then), it got replaced by an A4-5400

safe heath

The US infrastructure is a laughingstock

safe heath
#

i've got tmobile home internet coming on monday, but the best im hoping for is 40mbps down, the service here isn't great

but hey, $50/mo for a 40mbps backup line for when my shitty microwave goes down? yes plz

40mbps? that is shit

so, yeah...

safe heath

on my $450/mo line im "guaranteed" 100/20, most of the time if runs 60/5, on realllllly good days i get spikes up to 280/90 but that's on the clearest days when nobody is on

#

and it goes down for a few hours a week because the company doesn't understand how to build redudancy

#

i could get gigabit fiber! if i wanted to pay $1600/mo on a 5 year contract...

crisp granite

wow

and wait 9 months for the build-out

crisp granite

luckily, my area should have fibre laid within the next 5-7 years

safe heath

since they provide the backhaul to the microwave tower

reef tundra
#

I dont know how much the contract was but currently the download is 250mbps

safe heath
#

im hoping within 7 years fiber won't matter that much for rural anymore, thanks to starlink and its eventual competitors

reef tundra
#

Pretty much always

safe heath

which isp?

reef tundra

safe heath
#

ah ya, the dutch have infrastructure

#

the US

has...

#

um...

reef tundra
#

Monopolies

safe heath
#

well more than just that.

#

we have wide swaths of unoccupied land between our major cities that cost a fuckton to string lines over, so the cost of our infrastructure is substantially higher than that of most of europe. combine that with monopolies, then ya we're fucked

right? its insane.

#

Unless you mean their older stuff

cursive summit
#

Uhh no?

#

At least I doubt so?

#

Doubt a leadership change would fuck a product line

wheat plume

Still incredibly good I'd say

cursive summit
#

Just DIY them yourself

wheat plume

Girls only care about aesthetics 😄

#

When I first turned on my LG CX, I nearly came my pants from how amazing the sound was

#

My gf was like "yeah I don't really care"

misty saffron
#

i can totally relate to that

wheat plume
#

blobhyperthinkfast dont LG phones have DAC in the headphone jack?

misty saffron
#

you'd be surprised

#

fuck dacs

#

we listening to digital signal

cursive summit
#

@wheat plume The LG phones actually have quite good DACs

#

The Velvet has a dual DAC

#

Some other LG phones like the G8x I think, have a quad DAC

#

Beats me

misty saffron
#

makes you think you didn't overpay

cursive summit
#

Apparently that's what the option looks like

Quad DAC actually works like any other amp-and-DAC combo. The amplifier generates a lot more power than your standard headphone jack, thus giving LG devices the ability to power higher impedance headphones like the 300-ohm Sennheiser HD600. Meanwhile, the DAC portion supports audio files with up to 32-bit audio at 384 kHz sample rate (as of the LG V60).

misty saffron
#

brb wearing high impedance headphones outside

#

i actually don't understand why the fuck they have to care so much about audio

#

in phones

#

99% of people wear wireless earphones

frozen vale
#

can you even find a file like that?

misty saffron
#

and at home you'd usually have an actual dac+amp

#

and if you don't i don't think you actually care enough about having good sound

cursive summit
#

I don't

#

But I love audio

#

Simply don't have the money for that

frozen vale
#

same, also hard to shop for considering how many people believe in magical cables

The ess chip in LG phones isn’t that great

@wheat plume the only person who thinks Samsung buying AKG ruined AKG is probably dank pods. AKG did themselves in with shit headphones a few years before Samsung bought them. The newer stuff like the K361/371, N400, Galaxy Buds, Buds +, and Buds pro are pretty good.

cursive summit
#

Galaxy Buds are AKG designed?

neat oriole
#

AKG/Harman tuned

wheat plume
#

they got the AKG logo iirc

misty saffron
#

at the same time i doubt they needed akg to make something good

Austrian Audio, the company formed by ex AKG employees, has put out nothing but junk.
