ivory geyser
#

Lana come on, use head xD

#

What is the company making them called?

wheat plume
#

Their logo is a ship....

#

Oh :')

ivory geyser
#

Good xD

wheat plume
#

So
You saying I'll hear pirate chanty in the background the whole time with these?

ivory geyser
#

Possibly

true quest
#

this is all you will hear

wheat plume
#

Damn
Idk if I'd like that

#

Oh yeh....I had to reinstall vanced

#

I'm also looking at steelseries arctis
Do you need the software running for them you work? A review I'm reading seems to imply you do

neat oriole
#

Gaming headsets sux

#

Unless you want to look like your favourite affiliated streamer

wheat plume
#

I want good sounding for music but relatively cheap headphones for my computer.

neat oriole
#

Budget

wheat plume
#

I play games but mostly music

#

Uh...
Less than €200

neat oriole
#

That’s a decent budget

#

How to ask for advice:

1: Location? We’re not trying to dox you, it’s just that some things are more accessible in some parts of the world than they are elsewhere.
2. Budget? Whatever you’re comfortable with.
3. Do you have any source gear? Owning a competent amp/DAC could mean we recommend better equipment for the price.
4. Where are you going to use these, will it be noisy? Changes what type of gear we can recommend.
5. Previous experience? Could help us find something more suited to your preferences.
6. Main types of music you listen to? Could help us find something more suited to your preferences.

wheat plume
#

Well
It's been 5 years since I've gotten a pair last xd

#
  1. ireland
  2. <€200
  3. no other gear
  4. in quite room next to loud ish computer
  5. I like bass as long as it doesn't ruin the rest of the audio range
  6. wide range of music......
neat oriole
#

It’s not gaming laptop loud is it?

wheat plume
#

Not really
I don't hear it when listening to music unless I'm taxing it real hard

neat oriole
#

What’s your current headphone?

wheat plume
#

Hyperx cloud 2

neat oriole
#

So it’s closed back and you can still hear it

#

Hmmmm

wheat plume
#

I don't want open back

neat oriole
#

Oh well that’s ez, AKG K371

#

No mic tho

wheat plume
#

I think with any headphones I'll hear it
I sit right beside it xd

I don't need mic
I have one

neat oriole
#

Closed backs are hard to make and there are very few that are good

urban lynx
#

insert reiteration of me using sony wh1000mx3 now

neat oriole
#

I wouldn’t recommend them unless you needed the ANC

#

The bass is really boosted on those

urban lynx
#

🄲

#

i feel the bass is a little weak at times, lol

#

i had headphones with more bass tbh

neat oriole
#

They’re bloated but not dynamic and punchy

#

It’s tuned to be used on a plane

#

And I have one, which I only use on a plane

wheat plume
#

I think doge also suggested these AKG to me
But idk about them, they are made from plastic :/
I like the sturdyness of the metal frame in the hyperx clouds

urban lynx
#

so far they were the best i've ever used... 02Think

neat oriole
#

When you don’t have a lot of points of references anything can be good right

#

Preference is also a thing

urban lynx
#

fascinating how you immediatly assume i must only had like one or two other headphones before these.

#

you know what. fuck off.

neat oriole
#

What?

urban lynx
#

i dont even feel like bothering dealing with you.

wheat plume
#

I'm confused

neat oriole
#

Same

#

There’s nothing wrong with liking things with more bass or w/e

wheat plume
#

I like bass
If it's not making the rest of the audio worse

neat oriole
#

Anyways

#

K371 would be the best sounding for your budget

urban lynx
#

to me this is a direct implication i only like them because i wouldnt have much experience.

wheat plume
#

They don't look very durable though

neat oriole
#

They’re relatively durable

#

Wouldn’t survive being run over tho

wheat plume
#

Will they last 5 years? Of being handled everyday and occasionally put into a back pack

neat oriole
#

Probably?

wheat plume
#

Tbh
I should just try to find new ear pads for my clouds

neat oriole
#

Like I said closed backs are hard to do well

#

Good closed backs are far and few in between

wheat plume
#

The only thing wrong is the ear cup padding
Inside and out it's tearing and crumbling

urban lynx
#

sorry, but i'm just annoyed that no matter what you choose to use, there is always people out there straight out shitting on it. and this felt like it was just one more of these.

neat oriole
#

Yeah that’s pleather

#

I’m not shitting on them I literally have one

#

I’m just saying they’re good for one thing and not the best for others

urban lynx
#

well, how am i supposed to know that

wheat plume
neat oriole
urban lynx
#

i mean, when i mentioned i got a ryzen9 3900x, a friend immediatly started going off on me how it was just a waste to me, that i'll "NEVER NEED IT" that it's "SOOO STUPID" and so on.

#

why do i consider that asshole a friend anymore anyway? he keeps pulling terrible shit.

wheat plume
#

-.- wow

neat oriole
#

I mean my friend bought a 3090 to play wow classic

reef patrol
#

xD

wheat plume
#

Uh

neat oriole
#

I can still tell him he’s under utilizing his hardware

ivory geyser
#

Only explanation KEKW

neat oriole
#

He’s on a 1440p monitor

urban lynx
#

also same guy literally told me into my face that nobody fucking cared about me and my shitty bmw, when i mentioned i am not sure if i wanna do something with it. but he kept going on and on and on and on about his freaking Ford Focus, that he wants to tune this and that, and those and whatever the fuck downpipes are.

astral haven
#

"screw you if you have better stuff than me"

neat oriole
#

That’s his problem but like if you never do anything work load intensive a 5900x is pretty overkill

ivory geyser
neat oriole
#

Not saying you don’t just saying people over speccing their gear isn’t uncommon

astral haven
#

the 3900x is alot faster in some random tasks that are heavy on ram (vs the 3800x)

urban lynx
# neat oriole

sorry. let's just say, i felt like you were telling me my headphones were a fucking terrible choice. etc, etc etc.
maybe i read too much into it.
maybe i'm just sick of people trying to make me feel like all i do is bad choice.
... as if i dont already feel like my entire fucking stupid tragedy of a life is one big mistake

neat oriole
#

I’m trying to offer a more ā€œobjectiveā€ view on stuff in the hopes that people get the best bang for their buck

urban lynx
#

part of the reasons i choose the 3900X is actually the base speed to boosted speed, opposed to anything else. lol.

#

if i really just wanted "many cores" I'd gone with the next bigger one, i think the 3950x? didnt it have like 4 cores more?

astral haven
#

the 3950x is overpriced

#

as is the 3800x

urban lynx
#

i mean. after i had some integrated cpu apu BS thing, i wanted to treat myself to something. anything wrong with that?

astral haven
#

the 3900x is the "value" cores option

neat oriole
#

I’m not one of those reddittors that reee at anything that isn’t my thing

astral haven
#

also the 3900x has double the memory write speed of the smaller cpus

wheat plume
#

That's why Ryzens like speedy ram?

astral haven
#

not really related

wheat plume
#

Oh

astral haven
#

ryzens like speedy ram because an internal connector runs at the speed of the ram

urban lynx
#

well, you still might need to tell your bios to actually take advantage of your full ram speeds.

#

like i did

astral haven
#

and when you run the connector at a different speed from the ram it slows waaaaaaaaaaaaay down

#

yea

urban lynx
#

also the faster memory write speed was kind of one of the other selling points

astral haven
#

because technically anything over 3200 is overclocking

urban lynx
#

also, part in hope that i dont need to replace my cpu anytime soon

#

my ram is at 3200 now

astral haven
#

probably with better timings tho

#

anything better than 3200c22 is overclocking

wheat plume
#

I feel like my huge ears would scrap against the speaker grill on the AKG
It happens sometimes with the clouds and they are deeper

#

.-. I hate my body

neat oriole
#

I’d give them a shot

#

Return it if you don’t like them

astral haven
#

buy them somewhere that has free returns like amazon lel

neat oriole
#

Also AKG very cheap in EU

#

For some reason

wheat plume
#

€111 from thomann de

astral haven
#

yea 150 (usd) msrp iirc?

neat oriole
#

Yeah

#

Stuff like the K612/712 are super cheap in EU compared to NA

astral haven
#

should be 121 eur

urban lynx
#

well, i wish you all the best on finding your perfect headphones, i'm just gonna hide in shame and try to sleep myself into a better mood.

wheat plume
#

No..?

astral haven
#

urban lynx
#

why do i feel like i did then? 🄲

neat oriole
#

K712 is like $400+ in NA, <€200 in EU

wheat plume
#

My night night message wasn't sarcastic

#

If that's what you think

urban lynx
#

no it isnt that

#

it's literally just my mind being like "you fucked up" to me

wheat plume
#

Sleep !

#

I need too

#

Oh
The k371 are metal reinforced
But where? Only the headband or the cup swivel too??

#

A metal bracket extends from the headband and holsters an AKG-branded adjustment piece, which is unfortunately plastic.

#

Oh rip
The actual adjustment is plastic

@neat oriole What would you consider an upgrade from the K702 or K712?
Sundara seems to be the only real option I found if you don't want to shell out for an HD800S?

What are you looking for

#

I personally prefer the Sundara to the 712 but it’s a much more analytical sound

Idk if that’s your jam

It is

Also would need new AMP/DAC

neat oriole

If you’re EU just get a meizu dongle and a Schiit Magni 3+

Schiit is probably out of stock tho

K371 best closed back for its price, just doesn’t align with your tastes

What's the difference between the Sundara and Ananda?

hard thicket

cheap for amp standards

neat oriole
#

It’s pretty expensive for source gear

hard thicket
#

if you compare it to rather professional gear, it ain't that much tbh

neat oriole
#

I think to justify that you probably should have like 2k+ headphones

#

I mean what even is professional gear

#

You can mix on anything

#

As long as you know what you’re doing

urban lynx
#

from how i understand "professional" often is more of a marketing term

neat oriole
urban lynx
#

most often combined to describe that this certain product comes with extended warranty or customer services as part of the price

#

it also sometimes is supposedly used to identify an item to be made of "higher quality"

neat oriole
#

Some things are definitely ā€œproā€ but in terms of audio I feel like that term doesn’t apply as well

#

Not to mention most ā€œproā€ headphones suck for music

urban lynx
#

yeah that's true

#

friend of mine wants some yamaha monitors, they supposedly give everything back as was recorded.
now for him i'd say it makes sense if he uses it together with his music making hobby.
but not if he wants them to just enjoy it...

neat oriole
#

I mean studio monitors are different

#

Speakers as a whole is very different

#

Headphones are simple you just throw them on your head

#

Speakers you gotta worry about room acoustics

#

But I mean even relatively inexpensive studio monitors in a well treated room will give most high end headphones a good run for their money

urban lynx
#

yeah

#

i mean, a mistake i see some people do with their (computer) setups, is placing the subwoofer right under their desk...

neat oriole
#

It could just be they don’t have the desk space

urban lynx
#

i mean, yeah

#

but tbf, i dont even have space under my desk

#

🄲

#

and just with that my phone just came falling down from my desk, since there is also no space ontop of it

old marlin
#

I doubt you will get an old batch by now

stoic grove
urban lynx
#

speakers are often refered to as monitors as well

#

if you look at like a 5.1 or 7.1 system, all the speakers found on the sides and backs also usually are titled monitors

stoic grove
#

damn i didn't know that

#

lucky 10,000 and all that

urban lynx

astral haven
#

What?

#

Why?

neat oriole
#

So you don’t blow up your ears

astral haven
#

So it can't output line level?

neat oriole
#

You can get most iems to 100db+ at max tilt with a dongle

astral haven
#

That's very odd

neat oriole
#

No it’s just half power

astral haven
#

Oh so as a dac that doesn't matter

zenith sonnet
#

Should I look out for a Modi 3+, or something else?

neat oriole
#

Modi is good

#

Don’t get multibit tho

neat oriole
astral haven
#

That's very odd tho

neat oriole
#

EU do be like that

astral haven
#

There should be no reason to change chip

neat oriole
#

I mean android phones have built in volume limiters for the same reason iirc

astral haven
#

It already intentionally limits itself on android devices vs apple and windows

#

Don't see why it couldnt globally limit itself in the eu version

neat oriole
#

Apple devices don’t have volume limiters like android so the matching dong does

zenith sonnet
#

So, I'm subscribed to stock updates for the Magni 3+ and the Modi 3+, and got a dongle and Sundara in the cart. Time to wait rooOWO

astral haven
#

No that's not true ares

neat oriole
#

Sundara might struggle a bit on the dong

astral haven
#

The eu iphones have digital limiters

neat oriole
#

Hmmmm

astral haven
#

Yeah sundara can't run off just the dongle

neat oriole
#

It’ll run just not well

astral haven
#

Built in motherboard amp might actually work

neat oriole
#

Nah

astral haven
#

Youd be surprised

neat oriole
#

Mobo audio sux 99% of times

zenith sonnet
#

I got an X570 Aorus Master, not sure how well it does

astral haven
#

Again you'd be surprised

#

Oh yeah gigabyte throws great amps in there

neat oriole
#

Throwing a good chip doesn’t mean much

astral haven
#

Don't install the gigabyte drivers tho

neat oriole
#

Implementation is important

astral haven
#

Their software is fucky wucky

neat oriole
#

If you just line up 20 opamps sure it’ll make sound but it’ll be compressed as hell

zenith sonnet
#

I also got a E10K atm
But my wife's K3 is fucked, maybe it'll go for a while longer

astral haven
#

Gigabyte uses reference implementations most of the time

#

Which are solid

#

My gigabyte board sounds great when running relatively low sensitivity stuff

neat oriole
#

E10k is pretty outdated by modern standards

#

But idk maybe it’ll do the Sundara ok?

#

@zenith sonnet if you don’t want to wait ifi stuff might be viable

#

They’re UK based so probably easier to get than Schiit

zenith sonnet
#

I can wait, my current setup still works

neat oriole
#

Something like the ifi zen can is a decent option for EU folk

#

It’s a little expensive but that’s just how EU rolls

zenith sonnet
#

It looks so hideous, I don't want it on that grounds alone

neat oriole
#

Ifi hip dac is not bad either but it’s quite warm sounding

#

And I wouldn’t pair it with iems

#

More or less yeah unless you want to import it yourself

#

Schiit at least has some distribution in EU

#

I think Schiit Modi supports optical

#

4th one from left that looks like optical

zenith sonnet
#

@digital cliff Come wait with me for stock

neat oriole
#

So it’s USB, Toslink, and Coax

old marlin
#

that is spdif

#

not coax

#

spdif = toslink

#

only difference is that toslink is optical

#

also toslink really doesn't offer anything over USB

wheat plume
old marlin
#

doesn't that proove my point?

neat oriole
#

I’m just repeating what’s on the web page

old marlin
#

toslink just uses more fragile cables

#

and has some limited capabilities

#

nothing long range either

#

cause it uses PC which makes it unviable for that

neat oriole
#

He asked for optical, I figured Toslink is optical, I posted a picture of the back and listed the 3 different types of imports that’s listed on the page

old marlin
#

yea

#

name me another optical audio interface

#

there is none

neat oriole
#

Well idk what you’re getting worked up over

old marlin
#

people pretending that optical must be better

neat oriole
#

Did I ever say that?

old marlin
#

no

neat oriole
#

GES_QuestionMark ok

old marlin
#

cause some people confuse spdif with toslink

neat oriole
neat oriole

DACs make far more difference than I expected tbh

#

even upgrading between them

#

where/how can I find a uk header for this transformer?

#

is it a standardised thing?

reef patrol
#

Just put an adaptor on the plug itself?

lethal wasp
#

it has a removable plate though

#

I was given the wrong one with my order ages ago

thick elk
#

toslink does offer complete electrical isolation over usb. In some setups this can be a factor. USB can cary over electrical noises and audible ground loops. If that's a problem, you will hear it. Ground loop isolators or messing with wat power comes from where can also help. But optical audio has real. world benefits and is not some audiophool voodoo. Mostly with speakers due to the higher get gain.

Of course if you don't suffer from this there is 0 point.

astral haven
#

Toslink also cheap for super long cables

lethal wasp
#

a good dac prevents these issues, optical is largely obsolete afaik

#

I was sceptical of use powered dacs but it's just about filtering

#

the topping D10 was cheap asf and matched my £250 el dac which I refunded

#

cheapy cables can pick up crazy amounts of EMI

#

replacing my stagg rca cables with even amazon basic ones fixed an annoying buzzing from my studio monitors

reef tundra
#

Optical is not obsolete. Fiberoptics are the high-tech solution of the internet. For its high-range low-signalloss (if calibrated and welded correctly). Good lines can carry signals 100s of kms without repeaters to boost the signal again. Copper loses signal every meter, suffers from crosstalk, powerlines can cause noise, high-energy photons from deep space creating voltages in the wire. Optical is practically immune from EMI. The only problem is the higher cost for the laser, connectors, fiberoptic and modems. USB has an 5 meter cable length as seen in the specification(real life may be differend).

astral haven
#

A 25m usb cable costs 50, a 25m toslink cable is like 10

#

(you can do longer usb with an active cable)

#

And toslink is plastic and uses leds as a light source

#

It's pretty much the same price as a 3.5mm jack to implement electrically

#

Other thing usb is able to do is lower latency

#

Since the dac can communicate to the host device that it supports a lower latency

old marlin
#

@reef tundra toslink is not fiber-optic

#

Toslink is a polycarbonate rod

reef tundra
#

Fundamentally, it is still a fiber carring a signal through optical means. Plastic optical fiber is not as good in terms of attenuation, light scattering etc. but atleast you dont pay 50 euros per connector and plastic withstands more bending and stretching.

zenith sonnet
#

So, ya'll are saying I should ditch the USB cables and use optical instead?

old marlin
#

Provides no benefit

#

Instead of a lower data cap

#

Since it runs a protocol from the 70s

reef tundra
#

Depends on the situation and the requirements. The main problem with optical is that it does not carry power. Not sure what you specifically mean which one you mean with the protocol.. and whether it regards to the software and/or hardware side.

misty pier

yeah i don't want to brick my system so i'm not testing out insider

stoic grove
#

windows is called windows because it had programs that can pop out as.. well windows.

#

windows 10x doesn't have that

#

its windows without windows

#

its a tablet os mainly but also for touchscreen laptops and in theory normal computers too

misty pier
#

so its like a continuation of windows 8?

#

just better?

stoic grove
#

yeah kinda

#

it also doesn't support windows programs outside of the store

#

like windows 10s

#

or S-mode now

thick elk
#

It plans to support them but in a containerised environment.

stoic grove
#

thats good

#

I think its cool to see a new windows, but I'll be honest it takes out some of the things that I think makes windows cool. BUUUT it also is what I think is good for windows' future

#

desktops are becoming less and less a part of every home and most casual people are opting for just phones or phones and simple laptops like chromebooks. This is windows ChromeOS basically.

#

afaik windows10x is largely rewritten but I'm not 100% on that

vagrant marsh
#

i dont think we will see a new windows any time soon. microsoft knows that maintaining different OS's is expensive and time consuming, since different updates needs to be made multiple times for different compatibilities

#

its almost not worth it

thick elk
#

I think 100% rewrite is nothing but marketing, I am sure they changed some portions of the code but most will stay intact.

vagrant marsh
#

also, we are way past the era where everyone just did whatever to make stuff work. look at flash. flash was made to make websites work with a universal code. dont need flash anymore because stuff is more generalized now

crisp granite
#

@vagrant marsh my head is going to explode

vagrant marsh
#

you didnt took the asperin as i told you to, did ya

crisp granite
#

nah

thick elk
#

If anything with a 100% rewrite it would make sense to switch kernels to either linux or bsd, as maintaining an inferior kernel architecture takes a lot of reasources and why not leverage what litterally everybody else uses.

vagrant marsh
#

well, then its your own fault, you sadistic sick freak

#

you machochist

stoic grove

if they had to choose they would almost certainly choose bsd

vagrant marsh
#

FUCK

stoic grove

if they used linux they'd have to open source some of their kernel

vagrant marsh

now that i got my icons centralized, i need to get used to not scrolling all the way to the left to click on them XD

stoic grove
#

the world is too cruel for the BSD license

thick elk

They would have to but that may not be relevant Linux due to it's gpl nature does have a lot more resources poured into it and is mostly better because of it.

crisp granite
#

I really am one

stoic grove
#

anyways the windows kernel is a garbage heap of shit from the last 3-4 decades but it's actually a really crazy and kind of cool kernel

if only for the fact that it's so different

#

it's whole subsystem setup is pretty cool as I understand them

thick elk
#

It's not just the kernel itself but also the driver model and other things around it that keep it down.

stoic grove
#

yeah

#

my bad

thick elk
#

Drivers especially are the root of most problems.

stoic grove
#

have you heard of ReactOS?

#

not much at the moment

#

someday when it gets to xp level compatability though I would imagine it would become pretty useful for companies who don't want to or can't upgrade

#

also retro gaming

crimson wigeon
#

Eh, NT is pretty decent at recovering from graphics driver fuckups..

#

But really I'd rather have a microkernel based system so no driver can bring down the whole system

quasi shoal
#

ey boys hz stocken jullie geen wooting ones meer

bless you

kernel development

#

barely any of the cool stuff in nt is documented

#

by looking at reactos you get an idea of what is going on

#

Anyone wanna buy a wooting one iso without switches aPES_LulLaugh

misty pier
#

crisp granite
#

pale sigil
#

Might be able to find a spare set somewhere

#

pale sigil
#

Anyone want a wooting one iso with prototype switches!

crisp granite
#

oooooooo

#

what switches?

pale sigil
#

You'll have to pay for the privilege of knowing!

crisp granite
#

these wouldn't happen to be "light as air switches", would they?

pale sigil
#

Nono I'm serious hahahaha

crisp granite
#

actually

#

what are they

#

at least tell me if they're linear, tactile or clicky

pale sigil
#

Linear

crisp granite
#

flaretech blacks then

#

or just some flaretech linears you did a spring swap with

#

nice

pale sigil
#

Nope

#

To all

#

I had a proto board

#

Of the wooting one which was used for testing

#

Before mass production

crisp granite
#

so the switches are just a super early trial run

#

so smooth as butter

pale sigil
#

Sold the board to Tony

crisp granite
#

since the tooling was really new

pale sigil
#

Switches are different but yes early trial run

crisp granite
#

wait

#

different how?

pale sigil
#

Have to pay to find out

crisp granite
#

hm

#

this or a 2HE

pale sigil
#

Tony has the privilage of having a extremely rare variant of the one

#

Original wooting one

#

Oh

#

Wooting HE

crisp granite
#

ye

#

it's a hard choice

pale sigil
#

For real though I'm considering selling it with the spare switches I have

crisp granite
#

a true proto board

#

or a brand new 2HE board

pale sigil
#

It has keycap but it's german aPES_LulLaugh

crisp granite
#

that doesn't bother me

pale sigil
#

Oh it's not a true proto board

#

Only the switches are

crisp granite
#

ah

pale sigil
#

Tony has the true proto

#

Or will do

crisp granite
#

hm

#

this is difficult

#

Price?

pale sigil
#

Oh ugh, idk, £100?+ delivery, the pcb/keeb itself has never been used

ashen spindle
