Aldi jaffas are not a great representation

old marlin
#

eh

#

I ate real ones

#

aldi and lidl jaffas are good enough

#

imo

#
  • they come in more flavors

nvm

pale sigil
#

Mcvities are real jaffas

#

Different way of making them too

#

The aldi ones are OK

old marlin

wait

pale sigil
#

The difference is huge

old marlin
#

also german aldi and uk aldi jaffa cakes might be different

#

dunno what differentiates the two in your opinion

pale sigil
#

They are the same

old marlin
#

?

young pecan
#

Is aldi in other countries still really good?

old marlin
#

there are 2 different aldis in germany

young pecan
#

In Aus it's actually way better than you'd think.

#

Wait wot?

pale sigil
#

U wot

young pecan
#

2?

old marlin
#

there is aldi north and aldi south

young pecan
#

In... Germany?

#

The whole place?

old marlin
#

they split up after not coming to a conclusion on how to inherit the company

young pecan
#

Wait wait.

old marlin
young pecan
#

Do they inhabit different parts?

old marlin
#

like no joke

#

in the border region you got some overarching "territory"

pale sigil
#

Oh I rmemeber this

old marlin
#

but even internationally they are pslit

young pecan
#

Wait, but in the north there's one and in the south there's another one entirely?

pale sigil
#

I'm on about the South one

old marlin
#

yes

young pecan
#

No overlap at all aside from the mid?

old marlin
#

it is two companies

#

two logos

#

to product catalogues

#

and so on

young pecan
#

Lmao ok.

old marlin
#

lol

#

aldi south is closer to a lidl

reef tundra
#

Two brothers disagreed and spit the company to settle it i believe

reef patrol
old marlin
#

while aldi north is very concentrated on maximising products and profits

#

so their interior etc is often much lower standards

reef patrol
#

Danish Aldi is like visiting an asian market, except it all German stuff.

old marlin
#

lol

young pecan
#

Aldi is a magical land.

#

I can't describe it otherwise.

pale sigil
#

Well either way

old marlin
#

german retail is a complicated subject

pale sigil
#

Aldi jaffa cakes here say from Germany

old marlin
#

walmart learned that the hard way

young pecan
#

Hmm.

reef patrol
#

German retail is no laughing matter - But neither are their jokes for that sake.

young pecan
#

Do you guys have Biltong in Aldi?

old marlin
#

lol

young pecan
#

We sometimes get it in Aus.

old marlin
#

dunno what biltong is

reef tundra
#

They thought to themselves why even bother to unpack the things and make it look pretty. Just put the box on some sheft and its fine

young pecan
#

Dried meat, spiced.

old marlin
#

no?

young pecan
#

Kinda like jerky, but it's better in every way.

old marlin
#

seems kinda high class for aldi

young pecan
#

It is.

#

But we actually occasionally get it here.

#

I've seen it maybe 9 or so times ever.

old marlin

pale sigil

i rarely eat cadbury now anyway

pale sigil
#

not firefox

wheat plume
#

nope

#

its available for every OS

ivory geyser
#

People still use FF?

#

Dont blame you lul

reef tundra
#

Like you have much choice

ivory geyser
#

Had nothing but issues and letdowns with the new Quantum Mozilla ever since I tried it.

#

I do

#

There is plenty of Chromium-based browsers out there.

young pecan
#

Firefox Quantum that bad, eh?

ivory geyser
#

Well

#

It is just... underwhelming

#

It feels like worse Chrome to me tbh.

young pecan
#

Explain.

#

Firefox has always been far, far superior to Chrome.

#

Chrome is easier to actually setup, sure, but Firefox has always been better with effort.

ivory geyser
#

I just want to say first, I dont use EITHER Chrome or FF. Before I get to my critique.

young pecan
#

👌

ivory geyser
#

Well for starters, it is slower - By a lot. Second, the UI is not very nice to work with. Third, adding extensions to FF slow it down more than ANY Chromium based browser I tried. Fourth - I had inexplicable crashes using FF on my comp and laptop - these never happened with any other chromium based browser except for one abysmal update to Brave once.

#

Brave is nice, I agree, but my vote goes to Opera :P

crimson wigeon
#

Meh I'll still keep on using firefox, simply because chromium browsers behave in a way I don't like, like forcing smooth scrolling and not having autoscrolling

reef tundra
#

The web is a mistake

astral haven
#

i dont have smooth scrolling on chrome?

ivory geyser
#

Neither do I...

astral haven
#

and whats autoscrolling

ivory geyser
#

No idea

crimson wigeon
#

Oh cool they did readd the flag to disable that garbage

astral haven
#

mmb and drag down allows me to scroll down indefinetly

crimson wigeon
#

Now if only they'd let me have my autoscrolling (it's when you click middle mouse button)

ivory geyser
#

Vivaldi is lagging like shit on my comp

#

But yes, Vivaldi is also nice

#

From theoretical perspective at least... lul

ashen spindle
#

... you can autoscroll in chrome for as far as I remember

young pecan
#

I currently use Opera GX since you can force it to not use hardware.

ashen spindle
#

like at least 2+ years

young pecan
#

If a better browser had that I'd switch.

crimson wigeon
#

Not on Linux 🙂

ashen spindle
#

ah

astral haven
#

oh yikes

ashen spindle
#

linux? just use vim then KEKW

ivory geyser
#

Opera GX is actually pretty nice browser.

#

My GF uses it

young pecan
#

sigh My windows install is that bloated with misc dev shit that I kinda have to.

ivory geyser
#

Nothing wrong with it.

#

Just a bit too colorful for my tastes

young pecan
#

Eh, I'd prefer something lighter.

pale sigil
#

Misc dev shit = one program + 10 others to run it

vast moss
#

Does the Manjaro installer just not work in a 32-bit FAT formatted disk? I’m trying to install it beside Ubuntu (as I’d like to try something new) and when I boot to the install disk, it gives an error about “unknown filesystem” and GRUB enters “rescue mode”

wheat plume
#

it should, isnt that the bootloader type?

vast moss
#

It might be? I had no problems with Ubuntu, Debian, and Mint like this

wheat plume
#

Odd

#

Manjaro can be strange at times, I have moved away from it

young pecan
#

There any real reason not to use ExFAT?

vast moss
#

I was looking into Manjaro because I’m thinking of moving away from Ubuntu into other distros, and I heard Manjaro was good for cutting-edge software (which is also good since I have an RX 6800 which has its driver in Linux 5.10, which Ubuntu doesn’t support in release yet except if you download it yourself, which I also haven’t gotten to work).

plush summit
#

its based on fat

#

thats a good enough reason to not use it

#

and ntfs is a mess

#

delete

#

@wheat plume that does apear to be the uefi bootloader

#

though it is unmarked

#

usualy the boot folder will have a sub folder named something to represent the installed system

#

unless im dumb

young pecan
#

Iirc ExFAT is minor changes to FAT that work across OSes, no?

plush summit
#

ive done this soooooo many times with arch because i actually care to learn how to do it myself

young pecan
#

Or I’m too exhausted to think straight.

plush summit
#

yes and no

young pecan
#

It’s one of those.

wheat plume
vast moss
#

Perhaps the issue could be that the boot partition’s on another drive (I have a Windows drive and a Linux drive), but again, Ubuntu, Debian, and Mint took finely to that.

plush summit
#

exfat was a refamp of fat that increases the max file limit and the max number of possible files

young pecan
#

Yeh, and how it did that was by changing partition management to allow for bigger chunk sizes?

#

Or again I’m just stupid tired.

#

Autocorrect is helping me so much, omg.

astral haven
#

no aeon

#

they allowed by switching to 64 bit

plush summit
#

all the information on the differences of the filesystems are organized nicely

#

#

that other guy would shit his pants that something is offered for free

#

capitalist scum

young pecan
#

Man, fuck all the things except ZFS.

#

I like ZFS so much.

plush summit
#

@wheat plume there is usually some leading and trailing space at the beginning and end of the partition

#

thats normal

wheat plume
#

ohh

#

hmm ok

#

fedora fan? :P

reef patrol
#

The reason it's not popular is that... almost nothing actually supports it.

#

Your DVD player? Nope. Your NAS? Probably not. Et cetera.

young pecan
#

Yeh, that’s what exhausted brain was thinking.

reef patrol
#

Only use I've ever found for it is to transfer stuff to/from Macs.

#

Because eff fudging with NTFS and EXT drivers back and forth.

astral haven
#

its extremely useful for sd cards

young pecan
#

ZFS for all the things, pls.

astral haven
#

zfs is a gigantic pain for anything portable

#

and theres no way to fix that

young pecan
#

ZFS Micro SDXC edition.

#

Gimmie.

astral haven
#

that would be horrific but i do want to see it lel

plush summit
#

btrfs is not stable

#

its got a while to go

astral haven
#

the problem with zfs is its designed to be slow

young pecan
#

Just stripe 20 SDXCs together in GLUSTER.

wheat plume
#

Strange, Fedora uses it as default now

young pecan
#

I wanna see the train wreck.

astral haven
#

that means that its awful for any compute limited scenario

young pecan
#

Hmm.

#

I wanna see someone stripe together like 40 USBs.

#

400 USBs.

#

Fuck it, all the USBs.

vast moss
#

OK, so if the file system isn't the issue, any other ideas as to how trying to use the Manjaro installer leads to a filesystem error and throws GRUB into rescue mode? I already verified the checksum (SHA1) and it looked good.

#

Trying to write the iso to another drive now, going to see if that'll work.

wheat plume
#

Try ArcoLinuxB and pick up the ISO for the desktop you want

reef tundra
#

Just go to the source and get the arch iso

#

But it should be able to run on a usb stick lol

#

The boot section is formatted with fat32 because grub likes it that way

#

Simple and universally agreed upon standard to support

#

But its pretty simple and old

#

Windows

#

hehe

#

Only the boot has to be fat though the rest of my partisions are ext4 :)

wheat plume
#

O hek

reef tundra
#

Who needs fedora when you got arch

#

Linux foundation uses fedora mainly if the brain serves me right

wheat plume
#

I thought they used Mac?

reef patrol
reef tundra
#

Atleast it is an unix machine

wheat plume
#

Yeah....
M1 is pretty damn impressive

reef tundra
#

Risc processors are quite more effecient. Also helps when you can afford to make the chip custombuild

astral haven
#

there arent any high end processors who arent risc to some extent

reef tundra
#

Also saves a lot of work having to deal with making it backwards compatible with the 8008 or something

astral haven
#

and the arm isa is cisc btw

reef tundra
#

No?

astral haven
#

arm has alot of compatibility bs at this point

#

arm is cisc

#

all processors tho at this point are risc

astral haven
#

its a few hundred

#

throw in neon?

#

got another few dozen

#

the arm isa in the end on modern processors is around 1k instructions

#

x86 including all the extensions that exist (there are no processors who support all the extensions) is only like 2k instructions

#

actual risc isas have like 30 instructions at most

reef tundra
#

There is an difference between how the instruction exists. Combining the instructions and calling it a new instruction is kinda the fundamental idea of it.

astral haven
#

even risc-v is large at 50

reef tundra
#

You could make a turing complete isr with one instruction

astral haven
#

you could

#

but theres a balance to be made

reef tundra
#

Wont be the fastest or practical to work with

astral haven
#

and imo the cutoff to be even considerable as a risc isa is 100 instructions

#

now

#

the processor being risc is another story

#

100% of high speed processors are risc type processors

reef tundra
#

RISC is more than the instruction set they made 7 fundamental rules

astral haven
#

risc has parts

#

but an isa can be a risc isa

#

and a processor can be a risc type processor irrelevant of the isa

#

and counterintuitively the more risc the isa the more cisc the processor

#

because if you dont have as many instructions, you are forced to create dedicated paths for more of them

#

its no longer possible to make a cisc arm cpu (fast)

#

same story for x86

#

it is possible to make a risc risc-v processor because it still has more than 1 instruction lel

#

but

#

you dont need to

#

you can make a cisc risc-v processor
and thats what most of them are

reef tundra
#

I found it. I wish control f works on books

#

The design principles of RISC is to make all the instructions directly executable by hardware. Maximaze the rate at which instructions are issued. Instructions should be easy to decode. Onlu loads and stores should reference memory. Provide plenty of registers.

#

Page 64 Structered Computer Organization by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and Todd austin. 6th edition

astral haven
#

Yup

#

That's a risc isa

#

A risc processor minimizes cisc instructions from the isa into their fundamental units, speeds up those fundamental units till they are able to all be done within a cycle through ooe or prediction of whatever speedup tricks you want, and spits it back out hopefully faster than a cisc processor of that isa could

#

There are two different concepts here

#

Risc isa is what you are thinking about

#

But that doesn't translate to hardware

reef tundra
#

The book also points out that the name means reduced instruction set computer, which It believes that few people think the size of the instruction set is the issue but name got stuck.

astral haven
#

Computer as in the verb not the noun

#

Afaik

#

Which is why risc processor is grammatically possible

#

The software peeps always conflate risc isas and risc processors

reef tundra
#

With they main idea being even if it takes four or five instruction to do what a cisc does in one, with risc instructions being 10 times faster it would be faster.

astral haven
#

Sorry computer adjective not verb but you understand what I meant

#

And so any isa that combines multiple copies of the same simple instruction into 1 more complex instruction would no longer be risc right?

#

Aka vector programming

reef tundra
#

The goal is to make as fundamental instructions possible and abstract them together into something more complex

#

If you can add two numbers together you can multiply and do exponents by repeating the same simple instruction

#

The hardware could focus on making those instructions as fast as possible while humans can blob them together into more abstract instructions

astral haven
#

yes thats all 100% correct

astral haven
#

you 100% get what a risc isa is

#

but arm is not that

#

might have been at one point

#

not any more

#

extensionless mips is risc

#

arm v4? v5? v6? and earlier are risc
i forget when arm started adding vectorized instructions

reef tundra
#

The isa would still stay risc as it still ends up with the simple instructions in the end.

#

That is what programming languages are pretty much

astral haven
#

so x86 is risc since the instructions are ran as those simple instructions in the end

reef tundra
#

Not really as it becomes an abstraction layer on top of the ISR

astral haven
#

wut

reef tundra
#

x86 instructions -> compiler/translator -> native ISR

astral haven
#

native isr?

#

the isrs i know are integrated services router and interrupt service routine

reef tundra
#

Yea, microinstructions are a thing aswell

astral haven
#

what is this isr you are thinking of

reef tundra
#

Isa (instruction set architecture)

astral haven
#

whats isr?

#

or did you mean isa

reef tundra
#

yea

astral haven
#

ah

#

so x86 isnt risc because of that compiler/translater to the native isa?

reef tundra
astral haven
#

panda

#

im aware that you can read a textbook

#

understanding is a different story

reef tundra
#

When it has to compile or translate the x86instructions into those simpler instructions the ISA would be risc like. When it directly runs those complex instructions then it doesnt.

astral haven
#

ah theres the misunderstanding

#

the isa itself is not the part where the requirement for compilation or translation takes place

#

any isa always can be run without compilation or translation on a large enough, slow enough processor

reef tundra
#

The ISA is what is can run on hardware. ideally

astral haven
#

the isa is the instructions given to the hardware

#

it is not in charge of how those instructions get executed

#

they can be done in order or out of order, with dedicated paths for each instruction or not, or with prediction or not

#

thats not up to the isa

#

thats up to the architecture

#

the microarchitecture specifically

#

being the logical architecture of the processor

#

risc isa and risc processor are independent

#

(risc processor referring to the microarch and actual physical design level)

#

(and risc isa refering to the isa)

reef tundra
#

The ISA would be looked up in the microstore and turned into microinstructions.

Be rich it helps

crisp granite

#

dang

so a store

or at least shipping to hawai'i

#

dang

Or someone with a log and a peddle to cross the pond

crisp granite
#

here it's amazon or memxpress/CAN PC

#

and the prices are shit wherever you look

#

wut?

reef tundra

That sounds odd

crisp granite

I'm in canada, the nearest micro pp centre is a solid day of driving away

#

plus customs

#

customs

#

fucking hate crossing into yankland

#

too many questions, too much bullshit

reef tundra
#

They got some goofy predident as well

crisp granite
#

not really

#

we got some

#

but they're all small

#

and have pretty shit selections at shit prices

reef tundra
#

Just like my ...

crisp granite
#

still got mem express and canada computers, better than nothing I guess

#

mhm

#

but stock is shit

#

always

reef tundra
#

If you label and pretend it to be real

crisp granite

they had like 3 in the entire GTA

Good ratio, if your lucky might even see it in the news one day

crisp granite

and funny thing

#

no store here has any GPUs to sell

#

we've ran out of everything

#

even 1650's and RX570s

reef tundra
#

Not even some geforce 250

crisp granite
#

we just have the shitty display adapters in stock

#

like gt 710s and gt 1030s

#

corrections

#

we don't have any gt 1030s anymore

#

we got a few gt 210s

reef tundra
#

Even better

crisp granite
#

bruh

#

lucky bastard

#

ok

reef tundra
#

Cant have shit in detroid

crisp granite
#

there was a lineup from canada computers a solid 500 metres long

#

for 3 gpus

#

so

#

about 200 people walked away empty handed

#

after 12 hours

#

of waiting in the cold

reef tundra
#

I guess they all got to see the box that day

astral haven
#

good news guys theres a new gpu coming out that will probably be available for everyone who wants it

crisp granite
astral haven

pretty much doge

crisp granite

mhm

I'm lucky I guess

People will pay over that to be even get it

Just something cheap to run

Cause a 5600x needs a gpu to run

wheat plume
#

wait, isnt that running on legacy drivers already?

broken pollen
#

Idk

reef patrol
#

The 710? The monitor card? 😄

broken pollen
#

Its just to run

#

5600x doesnt work without a gpu

reef patrol
#

Mhmm

broken pollen
#

I'm not trying to pay £700 for a 3070

#

Idk that in dollars

#

But when i can get it I will

#

But knowing stocks it may just be wise to wait for 4000 at this point

#

Would the 710 be able to run word amd stuff 🤔

wheat plume
#

LOL OFC

broken pollen

It has 2gb of memory I think

#

Okay good

wheat plume

anything can run Word

even without a dGPU

mmm sfx

should've gotten that for better airflow in my case tbh

#

i'm a fan of the corsair ones since those come with braided cables?

#

im not sure if its the rest of their sfx lineup that includes them

#

i bought a kit of the same cables they use for their sfx in my case, fits snug and works well for me

#

custom sounds cool but a bit too much work for me

#

well, its just cables made for use in itx systems

crisp granite
#

noice

reef tundra
#

The technical specs is very detailed and went out of their way to have all the information at one place.

#

It is annoying to know some specific information and if you get lucky find it in some pdf or cad file

#

Also an good sign they give 3 years warranty on the coolers and fans and 5 years for the case. More than the legal minimum, so they have some confidence in the quality

#

Europe has it set to 2 years

urban lynx
#

damn.
the more i learn the more i keep hating the american system

reef tundra
#

That principle falls apart when the seller is hiding the problem or lying to them.

urban lynx
#

why do you thinj cdpr is facing a lawsuit atm 🥲

#

their stocks crashed so hard kekw

reef tundra
#

You can sue anyone for anything.

Other than the government giving an fine and refunds. People expecting to get damages is quite unlikely.

#

Being disappointed or unhappy is not considered damage. And refunds are being given out

#

Mobile games sweating

astral haven
#

those companies dont have shareholders usually

reef tundra
#

Its interresting that the ads can come up with an better game than the actual game

#

Had a few times the ad seemed worth checking out and instantly realising it being some generic game

urban lynx
#

oh yeah.

#

i just gave up on finding a good mobile game

#

i did enjoy fallout shelter though

astral haven
#

i have this globesweeper game that is minesweeper on a globe

urban lynx
#

ever played minesweeper with a 99*99 field and minimum amount of mines.
and your first click immediatly was the mine?

astral haven
#

i play smart minesweeper versions that regenerate the field in the background if that happens lel

urban lynx
#

thats my luck

astral haven
#

make your own luck

reef tundra
#

The first click is pure luck

urban lynx
#

i'msleepy

reef tundra
#

I remember some 3d zombie shooter with pretty good gameplay for what it was runnin on

#

Now it is a few original ideas and a few thousands clones

reef tundra
#

It is also interresting the double standard. Content creators have to keep their content advertiser friendly. While the ads are .. pornographic..

misty saffron
reef tundra
#

Would be the simples way to solve the first tile being a mine

#

Minesweeper is 95% skill 5% luck

astral haven
#

most modern minesweepers have removed the luck aspect

thick elk
#

depends, you can set it up where there are a decent number of times you realky have to guess in older ones. However, the first click in windows never hits a mine

misty pier
#

seems cool

ashen spindle
#

definitely won't be cool though KEKW

shadow minnow
ashen spindle
#

gl with the cooling if you oc that pos KEKW

#

also why not just a z470 board?

zenith sonnet
shadow minnow
ashen spindle
#

do you need multiple pcie4 devices?

#

if not, no point in z590

reef patrol
#

Gotta love how they basically added a "B550" chipset to Intel xD

shadow minnow
#

Well, wanted to use gpu and ssd on pcie 4

ashen spindle
#

yes you can do that on most z490

shadow minnow
#

But even if z490, will probably go for aorus master cause of couple of features. Will decide which one base on feature and price difference.

#

Maybe z490 master/xtreme will go on huge sale after z590 is out, and will be lot more worth it. If z490 xtreme is gonna go on sale for same price as z590 master for example, do not see point in getting z590 master

#

Would be really Pog if that was the case, z490 xtreme has SMT ram, thunderbolt....

ashen spindle
#

wtf is smt ram

#

and why do you want to go tiger lake? your room that cold you need another 250W heater?

shadow minnow
#

Not sure if Ima go RKL, will see when reviews come out

ashen spindle
#

what resolution to you plan to game on, 1080p or higher?

shadow minnow
#

4K

ashen spindle
#

ok 0 reason to go with tiger lake

#

like actually no point

misty pier
#

max out that gpu

shadow minnow
#

Will have to see yet. If the 11900k does not cost lot more than 400€ and will perform same as AMD CPUs when both OCed, may go intel.
For GPU im planning to go 3080/ti.
I really hope 3080 ti comes out as I like modding some games and 10gb vram at 4K may be near limit with some modded games

ashen spindle
#

get a 5600x and you get the same performance

#

like that is nothing unknown

#

the ti seems to be quite delayed now btw

#

if anything it's even be better incase the increase memory latency on rocket lake is real

shadow minnow
#

Will see yet. But if all the amd CPUs have same performance ima go for intel just for the fun with OC...
Will have to see reviews.
Also do not care about delays much, also waiting for 3080 ti and for Hdmi 2.1 4K 144 monitors, maybe eve spectrum to come out

ashen spindle
#

the OC wont change anything at 4k

shadow minnow
#

Do not care that much if it changes everything

#

That much

ashen spindle
#

so you want to oc to use more power for no gain

#

like what

urban lynx
shadow minnow
#

hmm, Looks like some small features got cut down from z590 master compared to z490

halcyon moss

it talks cable or telephone to the isp

yeah

shadow minnow

Hmm, I see wifi 6 router for 60€ here

misty pier

that explains it

think you could use it as a modem and hook it up to another router if you plan on getting another one

or just split it and get a dedicated modem and router

pale sigil

i feel like ive been tricked by my ISP, they put me into a 18 month contract instead of a 12 month one pepecry

for the last 6 years its always been 12 months renewal for discount

and no one mentioned it when i was leaving

that it was for the next 18 months

Save the receipts 😄

pale sigil

not really

not that bothered

#

i have it all recorded etc

#

i dont mind being in an 18 month contract

#

just tell me

#

i dont mind them

#

i went from paying 38 quid to 29 and doubled my speed

#

so im more than happy....

#

i know it doesn't affect them

#

but personally saves me a lot

#

and gets me further than other isps

reef patrol
#

No such thing here. Although short, you're always bound here. Usually 3month or 12month.

pale sigil
#

usually 12 here

#

which is why im annoyed

urban lynx
#

i know of "first 12-24 months, after that monthly cancel-able

#

since they often offer a cheaper rate the first 6-12 months

pale sigil
#

pretty much

#

which is why im so annoyed its 18 months

ashen spindle
#

that sounds like you are getting a contract about something you didnt want int he first place if you plan on getting rid of it so soon again?

pale sigil
#

Basically i say i leave

#

They try to keep me

#

lock me into 12 months

#

Which was my plan

but was annoyed they didn't tell me it was now 18m

urban lynx

had you like half a year of remeining contract before?

pale sigil

no

urban lynx

like they ADDED these 12 months

pale sigil

had no contract

urban lynx

oh ok

pale sigil

urban lynx

where are you taking it from that in 10 years there wont be private owned cars in europe anymore?

#

last i checked even these car sharing services werent doing so great

#

at least i havent heard anything about those in ages

and there certainly is nothing like this around me in a +60min radius
