That being said I think later driver updates / patches did close the gap.
For example the 5700xt outperforms the 2070 in the witcher 3. the 580 also outperforms the 1060 with quite a bit.

the better question is, why doesnt DP just work in 2020? I still get the "black screen input boot loop" thing every now and then where my monitor tries to detect the input, almost gets it, then fails and restarts the process. Never had the small annoying instability issues with HDMI

Thanks to the cache the 6000 series cards seem to be able to edge out a few more FPS than other cards in CPU limited scenarios

@ashen spindle for throughput? cpu and gpu work parallel by default so depending when in time cpu can pass off the frame to the gpu. Better cpu would just have slightly less input lag even if it's GPU bottleneck, so the total frame count might not chance too much but the frame is done earlier compared to real time

Say you have a 100% gpu utilization bottleneck scenario, it means, depending on the driver, 1-3 pre-rendered frames. Let's say it takes 10 mS to render a single frame and 5 mS for the CPU SIM. Now, with default settings (3), because CPU completes the SIM at 5 mS, it leaves the GPU behind. Your throughput in a GPU scenario is then not bottlenecked by the CPU because there are always at max 3 SIM frames you can render straight from, so there are no feeding issues. Your throughput is thus fine from the GPU side (FPS), just extra latency from real time.

But, if you had even less CPU usage, by 5%, those CPU Sims would take 4,x mS instead of 5mS. You'd still have 3 pre-rendered frames to render from and throughput would be unaffected, but total latency would be slightly less. If it's instead driver delay, then throughput is affected (FPS).

What changes that equation is if you force hard-sync to lower overall latency at 4k reso (reduced buffering in games) then your throughput is affected, even at 4K (cpu time + gpu time), since you can't render SIM ahead then. So a more powerful CPU, or less usage % would improve overall FPS there.
