the story with it:
(the part i forgot about)
my friend had gotten some of these power-lan, internet bridges. basically making the network connection run partially via the basic electric sockets wires.
why? because his router and main internet plug is in his living room, his gaming set up isnt. almost across the entire appartment. when he moved in there, i told him about all the networking options, and the best optimal way to do things, (and how i'd do it) and that was it.
(the part leading up to this)
saturday, he had complained that he cancelled his download of some 20 GB game, because it took him like 6 hours or something. we both know he has booked a fast network, and it shouldnt be that slow. i did not remember nor connect the dots just then. he had cancelled the download in the evening then.
(now where everything falls into place)
so. today, while i was at work, he sent some voice messages i couldnt listen to (due to work) until way in the evening. and a picture.
a peculiar link to a listing of said power-lan adaptor pair he had purchased.
initially i thought he wanted to ask if that's a good deal, like he usual does. but no. in the evening through the voice mails, i learned he IS using those.
he had called his internet tech, asking stuff and like, why his 150 connection only arrives as about 15 Mbits. (barely 2 MegaBytes).
said technician apparently told him that his network card or something was bad, or outdated, and he needed an upgrade, because the router was receiving the correct speed, which he was able to look up with some speedtest, i think by the provider themselves actually.
well.
he called me initially to ask about what network card he had in his computer, because i was the bitch that assembled it for him actually.
obviously this immediatly struck me as odd. it shouldnt be the computer being the issue for some lousy 150 Mbits.

and i told him so.

so i asked him if it was possible to try connecting the computer directly to the router.
apparently he couldnt. because he has pretty much all his wires in tunnels and ties and all. to have it neat and hidden away.
fair enough. i asked him if he had time right this moment.
1h before he had to go to work.

so... yeah.
i crammed into my bag: a keyboard, a mouse, one of the power supply cables, and my own ethernet cable. oh, and my 10m HDMI. and off i went to his place.
first test was just swapping the ethernet cable at the computer for mine.
no change.
then i immediatly went ahead, and unplugged all his stuff (like headphones, speakers, monitors, printer, loop station and MIDI keyboard, oh, and mouse and keyboard obviously)
and put that computer next to the router.
some plugging in, some trying out.

boom. full 160Mbits. 10 more than his plan even said.

i just looked at him, and he just looked at me.

we both knew, i told him so.
