nimble arch
#

Iโ€™ve got a 1150/100 HFC (hybrid fibre coaxial) connection that I use at home anyway. The 5G speeds are a nice backup but equally thatโ€™ll vary. Itโ€™s only just 8 AM here but if I did that test again later in the day, itโ€™ll drop much lower.

#

Plus that was indoors as well. The 5G speeds are generally faster, albeit not by much at times, outdoors.

plush stirrup
#

I can get 1000/40 coax, but that one drops to 20/2 after 3TB

#

and that costs 80eur/m

nimble arch

If my home broadband has a fair use policy, Iโ€™ve never reached it.

And they could take that away at any time I'm sure + they've been known to just limit 600 homes to 10Mbps (instead of gigabit, for some) because they had too little capacity and applying dynamic limits or such was too costly for them... imagine saying that to someone that's paying 80eur/m for gigabit

i am saying more speed isnt always the issue

astral haven

im saying expecting to get gig+ out of the interenet as a consumer isnt an isp issue most of the time

as someone who has had gig+ for a decade

#

but its also a non issue

astral haven
#

๐Ÿคท you can get gig+ whenever you want, just gotta multitask

vagrant pagoda
#

yep

#

the reason for gig+ isnt so one thing goes at gig+

#

its so that when you do 10 things at once youre still getting the max speed

#

it isnt an issue that steam is downloading at only 800mbit

#

the reason you have multi gig is that steam is downloading at 800mbit and you literaly dont even notice

#

i dont even have steam pause downloads while im gaming

#

because a gbit download wont even effect my ping

plush stirrup
#

for me it has some effect on my ping but that's just because coax xD I also just download while I play fps games

I usually lag anyways, not sure if I should blame valve or my ISP, but monitoring shows no issues on my side

They should stop calling it Linux

And just refer to it as SteamOS from now on

#

#

umbral heron
#

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux! SilvervaleNerdges

Tbf, gnu software does what is supposed to.

vagrant pagoda
#

im not saying gnu software is bad

#

stallman is a amazing for free software

#

but he ALWAYS is like linux exists because of gnu, which isnt true

#

Linus had more progress than gnu did on their kernel BEFORE he ever used gnu software

crimson wigeon
#

Except for the longest time you could only compile Linux with GCC, which is very much gnu software, and one of the first things ported was the gnu coreutils and such

vagrant pagoda
#

linus has said many times linux wouldnt exist if gnu had been successful with their kernel or if bsd had been out 6 months earlier.

crimson wigeon
#

Exactly

#

So it exists thanks to gnu

vagrant pagoda
#

but it would have existed with out gnu

#

the lack of any free kernel is why linux exists

#

not just the lack of a gnu kernel

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah and we luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you feel about monolithic kernels) live in this timeline where it exists and is pretty great, instead of being say a BSD where every vendor does their own proprietary changes and contributes nothing back

vagrant pagoda
#

the gnu kernel dosent exist because gnu failed to make a kernel, not because linux exists

halcyon moss
#

Herd.

vagrant pagoda
#

dosent work

crimson wigeon
#

And it doesn't exist because "eh, Linux.. good enough"

#

So it became a research project instead of a properly usable product

vagrant pagoda
#

gnu had been working on kernel projects for almost a decade before linux existed

#

gnu used a nonfree kernel and built the tools, which doomed the kernel support because for 99% of people they use the tools not the kernel so no one wanted to work on kernel dev

#

linus going kernel first made a massive difference for support

#

early gnu was plauged by kerels being depceated by thier manufactures, or just poor hardware support

crimson wigeon
#

And also didn't they want it to be pretty cutting edge instead of using something that works

#

Also known as microkernel

vagrant pagoda
#

the biggest difference between linux and gnu, is in gnu you do you

#

in linux you make youre software work with everything else

#

Linus and his NEVER break userspace motto has been a big part into it lasting

crimson wigeon
#

muh unix philosophy

vagrant pagoda
#

gnu is the opposite

#

its why you need 900 gcc versions

#

it was a huge deal when linux dropped 386 support

crimson wigeon
#

I've never had to use a specific gcc version, my experience is more like "oh yeah we only support (gcc / clang)"

vagrant pagoda
#

in like 2015

#

which is insane

#

and 486 was only dropped recently

#

nah they actually removed the code that made it work

crimson wigeon
#

And I think it probably barely worked, if it all anyway since no one tested it

vagrant pagoda
#

they were emulating 486 calls in software to make it work on 386

#

the fact that all the kernel had to work on a 386 in 2010 is wild

#

yeah it was comapre and exchange

#

they had it software emulated for 3865

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah it was fun running a modern distro back in like 2008 on a 10 year old (or so) computor at the time, even got a composited desktop going but oh god it was SLOW

vagrant pagoda
#

The fact you could compile and run a modern kernel on a non mmx Pentium is wild

crimson wigeon
#

But at some point, legacy compatibility starts to hold things back, just look at Windows for example

#

Although this more about userspace compatibilty

vagrant pagoda
#

You just have to include workarounds is all

#

You can use modern extensions if you include workarounds

#

Like id imagine 3dnow/sse floating point ops are used for all kinds of things

Wootility nor your keyboard has a language. This is entirely dictated by your Operating System. If you're using the browser version of Wootility, then you have to ensure it's not blocking access to your language settings (Brave shield fx), or it'll assume English.

paper quest

#

windows at some point decided that you have to have "languages" under which you have "layouts"

fair gull
digital cliff
#

instead of just having layouts, which in and of themselves are of a certain language

#

fucking idiot design and not helped by the fact that windows goes "LMAO you wanted to use the other language/layout? here, I changed it to a random one for you!" every single boot

crimson wigeon
#

It makes sense, so you can type whatever language you want in a familiar keyboard layout (the language is there for things like spellcheck and autocorrect, predictions, so on)

paper quest
crimson wigeon
#

Can also just hit winkey+space to switch whenever it gets autoswitched for whatever reason

reef patrol
#

It's still in your OS, not the keyboard.

#

So I'll admin that +1 back to 0. Sorry

digital cliff
reef patrol
digital cliff

I don't like the two-tiered menu because not all information is visible to the user

and to have two different keycombos to switch languages and/or switch layouts, or both, is crap

digital cliff
#

fair point but truthfully I'm not sure if most people use spellchecking

fair gull
crimson wigeon
#

Although to be fair, the split makes slightly less sense with physical keyboards, it makes more sense if you think how touchscreen keyboards work

#

Since users of those tend to rely a lot more on autocorrect and such

frozen ingot
reef patrol
vagrant pagoda
#

no idea why

fair gull
#

ok guys the terror is over

#

i just forced it out

digital cliff
#

you could still have a language attached to each one for spellchecking, if you want

#

just have them be visible in one menu to make it apparent which ones are enabled

#

something like this is peak imo, everything is split into languages to make it logical, but all in one menu

frozen ingot
#

I don't know if its because I use one language for the OS and another for the kb layout that it keeps insisting on having two or more keyboard layouts to toggle between

digital cliff
#

I think so yes

#

since I don't think you can have an english OS without "English" being installed as a language

frozen ingot
#

that's not how the programmer intended it to work 30 years ago so it still gets confused

digital cliff
#

and each language needs to have at least one keyboard layout ๐Ÿคช

crimson wigeon
#

There is some weird bug/feature that consistently makes the US keyboard layout (and maybe some others!) reappear even if you don't have it enabled

I think I managed to delet the US layout from the layout "shortlist"

Office isn't the problem. Office 365 (and relying on email servers abroad in a country that doesn't care about rights)

#

I don't think anyone REALLY cares if emails get read. It's having your account shut down with no way to address it.

#

It's not just a case of getting another email address, a ton of services are tied to that exact email, you probably don't have a catalogue of everyone you'd need to send an email to inform them of the new address etc...

I think they removed the ability to minimize notifications in oneui7
stupid watch app has to have a notification or the app won't stay open to get notifications on my watch, and it takes up one of the precious spaces in my status bar

I liked gestures instantly on ios but I still don't love current gestures on android
feels like it's been a thing for longer on ios though, they just moved some things around when they removed the homebutton, so it's a bit better implemented
google still has the hamburger menu gesture in gmail that you can't use if you have gestures on(you can still open the menu but not use the in app gesture)

i feel dumb when nico hands me his phone for a sec and i try doing gestures

I only ordered the Wooting 60HE+ Module and nothing else with it, it still comes with screws, and other things I would need to assemble the board right?

reef patrol
umbral heron

I don't really see why would you use RAID nowadays outside server stuff
0 is useless, because SSDs are crazy fast, and for bigger storage LVM is better
1 is not worth anything because RAID is not a backup Shrug

does the module come with screws needed to build?
