Plenty for a 5090 not from a scalper

#

And the 4.6k already includes the 5090 at msrp

#

For that model

vapid tree

Corsair p3 in a build like that WeirdChamping

gentle osprey
#

Bro don’t even need half of this stuff

vapid tree
#

I mean might as well do it correctly if he's spending that much

#

That psu also isn't... great

gentle osprey

He’s got another 2.9k he can choose another one

vapid tree
gentle osprey
#

Yeah I know about that

distant tapir
#

7,5k budget.... at that point it's arguably very easy to choose parts

#

Esp gpu and cpu

gentle osprey
#

Also hasn’t been updated since 2023

vapid tree
#

I'd still make sure It's at least an B tier on there, especially with the 5090 and It's load balancing problems

distant tapir
#

Just get a 1200W titanium psu

vapid tree
#

Not that easy

distant tapir
#

Or 1600W Smug

gentle osprey
#

I go for tier a gold highlight persoanlly

distant tapir
#

With that budget I'd go for 1600w in hopes of having enough headroom for the fan to not turn on

gentle osprey
#

But I just choose a random PSU on that partpicker list

raw zephyr

that single 12vhpwr is still going to melt šŸ˜…

vapid tree
raw zephyr

i would rather pick the taichi myself

vapid tree
#

carbon is buildzoid approved

and tested iirc

#

With ram that slow he could chose a b650 anyway, the carbon in general achieves better OC's especially when it comes to sub timings though

raw zephyr
#

not like the 9800x3d can go above 6400cl30 anyways šŸ˜…

gentle osprey
#

Basically why I choose the 6000 cl30

raw zephyr
#

have you tried yourself?

vapid tree
#

Running 7200cl34 rn as the kit I got was rather poorly binned

gentle osprey
#

I personally don’t think our friend here is going to be running his at 8000mhz cl34 and put a fan over his RAM

#

But that’s just my assumption

vapid tree
#

Does he have to run 8000?

#

7200 on a 8000 kit runs OOTB with expo

raw zephyr
vapid tree
#

In tarkov for example the increase was rather big, same with marvel rivals

vapid tree
raw zephyr
#

definitely

gentle osprey
#

7200 cl34 is a big difference vs 6000 cl30 in those games?

vapid tree
#

Anything bandwidth heavy like games (especially cpu bound games) will favor the faster speeds

#

In tarkov I went from 120ish avg to 130ish but with way better 1% lows

raw zephyr
#

but very impressive

gentle osprey
#

Hence the fan lol

vapid tree
#

Not saying It's worth the money but if he's gonna be a baller might as well consider this yk

vapid tree
gentle osprey
#

Yeah fair enough

vapid tree
#

don't need the fan if It's in a case (at least if airflow is right)

#

Open bench is always a little rough with memory oc as you wanna keep ddr5 under 70c ideally

gentle osprey
#

Yeah should be alright maybe

#

Although GPU might warm them even more

vapid tree

ye depending on case

Very neat. But... on the other hand with how powerful FGPAs are becoming it feels very nichƩ. Especially since you need to bring your own GPU.

It's harder than ever in 2025 to play DOS and Windows games on original hardware, but a modern ITX motherboard known as the ITX-Llama has recently released - it uses a Vortex X86 System on Module processor package and with old school ports like PS2 Mouse and Keyboard as well as a dedicated AGP slot for connecting up a graphics card, the ITX-Llam...

ā–¶ Play video
vagrant pagoda
vagrant pagoda
reef patrol
#

It's a LOT easier for me to find a working CRT than a fairly specific AGP GPU in these parts šŸ˜›

vagrant pagoda
#

They are cheaper than an fpga

reef patrol
#

And less dynamic.

#

This Llama will only cater to a fairly narrow time in hardware history, and only specific platforms. It won't do say... PPC Mac of the day or various console based systems - while being a lot more expensive.

It doesn't even provide "slower" CPU options like 33mhz and below, so you still have a PC that's too fast for a lot of older games, and you'd need to use CPU eating tools and pray.

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah and if it was an fpga it couldn't do any of those systems in addition

reef patrol
#

Yes it could?

vagrant pagoda
#

The analog sections required would mean you'd need a new base board for them

reef patrol
vagrant pagoda
#

There isn't a fpga core for those 3d adapters though

reef patrol
#

Anyhow - Back to the point I was trying to make. It's way too expensive and difficult to source exact parts, for the narrow specification it does.

vagrant pagoda
#

Well other than voodoo 2

#

Which wouldn't work on this

reef patrol
vagrant pagoda
#

Also you have never tried to buy a voodoo 3

reef patrol
#

I haven't? Oh that's a bold assumption.

vagrant pagoda
#

OEM ones are 50 to 75 bucks

#

And available

reef patrol
#

And untested, and pushing 30 years.

vagrant pagoda
#

And ?

#

They are very reliable

vagrant pagoda
#

Don't confuse voodoo 1/2 to the later stuff

reef patrol
#

That sure is a take.

vagrant pagoda
#

How many have you owned?

#

You can throw a $20 banshee in here and play tons of games

#

Or even better don't get a voodoo

#

Just get a g400/200 and brute force the 3d with the super fast CPU

#

And then have cleaner video output and likely the most reliable pre-2000 GPU ever made.

#

And there is no argument that a g200/400 is unreliable or expensive

#

As working oem ones are ewaste.

vagrant pagoda

Glide was never better visually, the hardware was faster. You can just get a new cheaper non 3dfx GPU.

#

If you get a 9.0c GPU you can even run nglide on 98

#

There are other glide wrappers but you need to go game to game basis

What is this noise? Needs new coolant? Pump? Air bubbles? Cable touching the fan? Bad fan bearing?
AIO: Deepcool ls520

ashen spindle

#

#

Though now it works with the old poe switch again???????

#

I did unplug and change ports and all when I tried it and nothing changed and now it just works

rain quiver
vagrant pagoda
#

Also did all the ports die or just that one?

vapid tree
# rain quiver Top

Aight that's good, you could try using fan control to see what it is. Should be able to control the pump via that as well, if not bios

vagrant pagoda
#

Also make sure it's not the cable

ashen spindle
#

No it just works again lol

rain quiver
#

Yeah i gotta do it with my fingers because my 3 fans are daisy chained so i cant turn them off individually by setting their fan curve to 0

#

And for the pump, the noise only happens under load i feel it might be a bad idea to put my cpu under load load with my pump at 0%

vapid tree
#

I see ye just stopping them with your fingers should do the trick

#

Doesn't sound like It's the pump tbh more like a bearing or something got between them

rain quiver
#

I hope its not the pump tho cuz you cant buy that aio anymore i dont think

vapid tree

unplugging the fans completely is also an option and see if it prevails under load

frozen ingot

it gud

fathom venture
ashen spindle

And no it’s the best gaming cpu

fathom venture

I already have another pc as my workstation by my company so I don’t need a pc that can do rendering and stuff, only gaming

So I don’t need any balance

gentle osprey

vagrant pagoda

lol

vapid tree

I had to return my tx 1000 titanium cause of transients

#

My brother in christ the TX line in general is their high end line

vagrant pagoda
#

also was it transient response or ocp

vapid tree
#

Just cause one is the most expensive doesn't invalidate the rest of the line. If 4 out 5 in a line aren't good It's not a good line

frozen ingot
#

outside of ssds and such I haven't seen that many chinese pc brands

vapid tree
#

Was on my old 7900xtx tbf but still shouldn't be an issue.

vapid tree
fathom venture
#

And also let’s say I go for godlike, what difference will it make? I was planning to go for carbon/taichi like you guys recommended

vapid tree
#

No difference at all besides IO

#

Carbon and godlike have the same nvme layout as well iirc

vagrant pagoda
#

id imainge it was ocp

#

was it a crash or shutdown?

frozen ingot
fathom venture
vapid tree
fathom venture
#

Because both look very premium and recent Asus rog motherboards have had issues with them

vagrant pagoda
#

thats ocp

vapid tree
#

High end boards are more of a trap than anything, you pay a lot more for minimal improvements in overclocking

gentle osprey
#

Yeah those are already overkill esp if you’re not OCing like that

#

Godlike is beyond overkill

vagrant pagoda
#

its a pre at3.0 so its ocp on the spikes.

fathom venture
frozen ingot
#

the modern motherboard market is lowkey a scam

vagrant pagoda
#

7900xtx can do 700w+ transients

frozen ingot
#

particularly the "high-end" segment

fathom venture
#

Should I get factor oc 5090? Or should I just oc later? Will it be the same?

vagrant pagoda
#

all pre 3.0 psu's will do that

vapid tree
#

But nowadays even $150 boards are enough to run a 9950x

#

The higher you go the more you pay for looks and premium features you'll most likely will never use

gentle osprey
#

Yeah anything over about $300 is overkill nowadays unless you need the IO or slots etc

vapid tree
#

yup. 250-300 is the sweet spot if you want all the connectivity and premium features one would need on a gaming rig

frozen ingot
fathom venture
gentle osprey
#

Well you don’t really need either of those tbh

#

You can get something cheaper

#

And still be fine

fathom venture
gentle osprey
#

Intel has been slacking since 12th gen

vapid tree
#

Carbon shouldn't be 700

gentle osprey
#

Yeah isn’t it like 480-500

fathom venture
#

My cpu reaches such high temps now

vapid tree
#

400 over here but even that is a lot tbh

fathom venture
frozen ingot
#

what you seemingly get on the top shelf mobos over the models one or two price points below is more heatsinks/rgb covering its surface

fathom venture
#

Oh wait I think I’m confusing two different motherboards

vapid tree
#

It's even the x870e

#

Honestly extremely premium board for the price lol

gentle osprey
#

That’s what I was gonna recommend tbh

vapid tree
gentle osprey
#

Could save $80 if you wanted and get the x670e

vapid tree
#

^ equally as good

gentle osprey
fathom venture
#

I mean it’s still high end though? But the meta pc guy told me the if u want the best go for godlike, that should be the best but he didn’t really explain why, does that make any difference at all? Like in terms of performance, or is it just for the show? And how is motherboard even a flex though? It’s always cpu gpu right? I don’t care about the aesthetics on motherboard I just want it to have a good build and give the best possible performance, basically the best motherboard FOR my system

gentle osprey
#

Mans just wants you to spend more money lol

#

It’s mainly a flex

#

To have a godlike

frozen ingot
#

there's no point in going for "the best", aside for where it actually matters like on the cpu/gpu model

vapid tree
fathom venture
gentle osprey
#

No

#

And you’re gonna cover it up anyway

#

With Ram and cooler and GPU

fathom venture
#

That’s what I’m saying carbon looks just as good, it’s a premium build too right?

gentle osprey
#

Yeah or the tomahawk we recommended

#

Tomahawk is very good value

vapid tree
#

The difference is looks mainly. While yes you get better power delivery and better "parts" there will be no difference in real world usage. These boards mainly get made for youtubers and marketing.

fathom venture
#

Yes yes my first choice was tomahawk

vapid tree
#

Tomahawk at It's core is very close to the godlike in terms of parts btw as It's already way overspecced for ANY am5 cpu there is and will come

fathom venture
gentle osprey
#

Yeah a lot of mobos are actually overspecced nowadays and the expensive ones just don’t really make any sense except for very niche things

vapid tree
#

I think so as well but there's always people that just blindly but the most expensive thing. There aren't many of those boards made for that reason as well

#

They don't get bought all too often

frozen ingot
#

there's so much cashgrab fluff products in the pc hardware segment now tbh

vapid tree
#

Always has been

vagrant pagoda

vapid tree
vagrant pagoda
frozen ingot

you barely had gaming peripherals for pc until the mid-late 00s, let alone gaming branded mainboards and such

vapid tree
vagrant pagoda

tomahawk is a mps and the godlike is Renesas

vapid tree
#

They're not 1-1 the same but both way beyond overkill

LOL

vapid tree

It's again just marketing

vagrant pagoda

the tomahawk is 80a and the godlike is 110a anyway

neither are 50

vapid tree

Ah right mb still ridiculous for that socket.

vagrant pagoda

yeah saying the vrm is enough on both is one thing, saying they share componets is wrong

I've been searching a good ahh mic, I was thinking to get a fifine k688. The issue comes around the fact that it's only available on US and UK amazon, which cannot be dispatched to me. Lovely.

digital cliff
#

where you at

#

you can get the K688 on maxgaming and on aliexpress so your statement is just a lie šŸ¤”

#

both of those places ship to pretty much everywhere else except north korea

wild coyote
digital cliff
#

sooo I guess make one :3

wild coyote
#

Do you know if their mixer is good? It looks pretty decent for a low priced one

digital cliff
#

what would you really use it for?

wild coyote
#

Mainly to control audio

#

peposhrug If it works, it works

digital cliff
#

I don't see a reason to have one

wild coyote
#

It can connect with headphones as well

digital cliff
#

well if you don't mind subscribing to the questionable DAC and amplifier in it, sure

wild coyote
#

If you have any decently cheap mixers that I can use for controlling audio and what not better, please do provide since I'm up for suggestions

digital cliff
#

what is your setup right now and what do you mean in detail when you say "controlling audio"

wild coyote
#

Like right now, I got a razer headset (which does echo friend's voices unless I get their shitty software to have certain settings)

#

And controlling audio, as changing the volume, mute, etc for mic and if possible, for headphones too

digital cliff
#

so changing the volume of the mic is something you never need to do in a casual environment, you set your gain once and that's it forever -- and the K688 has it's own touch-mute button

#

as for changing volume on the output (headphones/speakers), you really want a separate amplifier for that. I don't know of the quality of the amp in the SC3 for example but looking at it, I imagine every euro of the 60 they ask for it went into pretty lights and cool sliders instead of a robust amplification solution with low distortion

wild coyote
#

What do you recommend for an amplifier? Hopefully it doesn't break my bank hm

digital cliff
#

I'm not very well versed in that truth be told, I have a Schiit Magni but that's about 100+€. I'm sure there are cheap and good, simple options for you out there from one of the chi-fi competitors in the market like fiio and topping

#

when I looked into it it seemed like the 100€ pricepoint was well-saturated, not sure of what's the cheapest you can go without it starting to defeat the purpose

wild coyote
#

mmm

#

I'm gonna try looking for more microphone options before I buy it from aliexpress, considering their prices are... meh

digital cliff
#

yeah, I got the K688 not long ago on a mild discount, I like it but it is a tiny bit quiet, I have it on +4.5dB in software to get to a nice level

#

an interface of somekind would be nice so I could turn up the gain in the preamp but I don't have one so I'm just using the USB on it

wild coyote
#

I got 200 euros cash and I simply want to find something that's not too costly and works just fine

digital cliff
#

for your mic setup or does that want to include everything else as well?

wild coyote
#

For the mic setup

#

I am getting more money later on for a new headphones which are gonna be a DT 770 pro

digital cliff
#

I'll give a recommendation then to the K688 (+optionally the BM88 low-profile mic arm, REALLY nice for the price) and connect it just with USB so no interface needed

#

well below 200 and realistically more than normal people ever need already

steady sail
#

Overall for that u can use voicemeter

check if you don't want a longer USB cable as well, if your PC is far from where you're gonna mount the arm, you might need a lot of cable

wild coyote
#

It's pretty close

#

Like right next to me

alright, just remember the arm itself is like 80cm already so if it's much further than half a meter from the mount point I'm not sure it's gonna be enough

okay it says it comes with 2.5m cable, I forget where mine is so I just looked it up on the fifine website

#

should be enough in almost all cases I guess

vagrant pagoda
#

Different mic but still USB

#

My arm is mounted to my monitor mount and comes over my monitors and for a while every time I used my webcam it would destroy my mic quality lol

#

Then instead of a USB extension I got a quality 4m USB cable and it fixed it

digital cliff
#

oh interesting

#

I never tried the included cable, I bought a 3m random chifi cable with my order on aliexpress because I wanted a white one to go with the white mic and arm and that seems to work perfectly fine

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah I don't have that exact mic but I have a USB mic on an arm and had an issue with cheap cables

#

Which makes sense, the arm isn't grounded to the mic, so if you have a long cheap/unshielded USB cable it will pick up a bunch of noise

#

Like back in the day when USB 3 would nuke your wifi and wireless mouse/keyboard

Plasma is better on desktops

halcyon moss

i preferred gnome when i used it on one of my laptops it ran so much better than plasma

wheat plume

Gnome had touchpad gestures working out of the box
Virtual desktops set up also
Much larger hotboxes for targeting with touchpads

None of gnomes UI widgets have tiny hotboxes like some of plasmas do

halcyon moss

wheat plume

Menu bar + title bar

#

Same window control button layout as Windows too

#

Same default minimize behavior
Same default task manager behavior in the taskbar

#

The only Linux desktops that arent Windows-like are Gnome, Budgie, xfce's default layout and whatever one that HaikuOS uses

.. Blackbox, fluxbox, all the tiling ones

#

But if you consider a desktop the whole suite of apps and tools.. Then yes

wheat plume

yeah, I meant desktops xd not window managers

ashen spindle

yeah its not much to support and some older games dont run without it, sucks

glad im keeping my 40 lol

#

F 50 series

#

"This means that the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 (and all other RTX50 series GPUs) cannot run games like Cryostasis, Batman: Arkham City, Borderlands 2, GRAW 2, Mirror’s Edge, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Bioshock Infinite with GPU-accelerated PhysX. Instead, you’ll have to rely on the CPU PhysX solution, which is similar to what AMD GPUs have been offering all these years."

#

to name a few

ashen spindle
#

borderlands2, arkham knight games, I think one.. yeah that lists more xD

#

no

#

a few of them can switch over some wont run with the fallback at all

#

iirc batman games are part of the ones that wont run without it

reef patrol
#

And I did post about this earlier today, just not to an article šŸ˜„

gentle osprey
#

someone made a list

reef patrol
#

So I guess now we can add "PhysX hacks" to the list of required skills for posterity.

gentle osprey
#

Indeed

rough patrol
#

wow there is some big hitters in there

ashen spindle
#

some will need hacks some will need you to have a second nvidia gpu to run physx now xD

#

better keep your 4090 to run it as physx accellerator for your 5060

reef patrol
#

Today's lesson once more: Don't sell nVidia anything.,

sharp badger
#

Games that at least I'll probably never play again but yeah support for it would be nice for those who want to play them

ashen spindle
#

its also not a lot to ask a 2000$ gpu to support at least a fallback

sharp badger
#

Yes

ashen spindle
#

if any x86 cpu can still run some of the first versions of DOS you would expect nvidia cards run nvidia software

reef patrol
#

But that's what happens when a company cares infinitely more about profit uber alles than making loyal fans I guess šŸ˜„

lyric hatch
#

They still work without PhysX or does every AMD card not work in those games either dogekek

reef patrol
#

Which for a game like Mirror's Edge is a damn shame.

gentle osprey
#

yeah apparently it sucks in BL2 as well

old marlin
#

DANG and doesn't matter for borderlands 2 at all (it always kills perf in that game)

gentle osprey
ashen spindle
#

its great in bl2

#

and there you can force it to use the cpu path

old marlin
#

I always had perf issues

ashen spindle
#

but the arkham games wont work with that at all

old marlin
#

no matter what card I used

#

in bl2

ashen spindle
#

perf is not great but it looks great and plenty of people take the hit for it

old marlin
#

no like

#

it goes sub 60

#

in a game that otherwise runs on a few hundred

ashen spindle
#

I know quite well, I ran it on a 1080 with my 770 as physx card xD

old marlin
#

it runs sub 60 on my 3080ti

#

with physx on

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

yes but iirc you can force it to run on the cpu path with the fluids

#

the reduced one always was the default even on amd and such

astral haven
#

interesting, i thought i couldnt get it working at all on my 6670

ashen spindle
#

it's been a few years since I was disappointed enough with bl3 lol so dont remember the details

#

I just do remember there was some way to force the cpu path

astral haven
#

yea but im pretty sure they skipped on some effects, dont remember being able to get the fluids working on my old radeon card or on my friends pc, even if the debris still worked

unkempt lake
#

It just didn't have hardware acceleration

#

I swear i replayed batman and could turn it on

astral haven
#

it wasnt using the gpu at all, pure cpu

unkempt lake
#

Ah

#

Can nvidia cards not just use it on the cpu

astral haven
#

yes but the problem is usually they skip on some effects that are too heavy for a cpu

#

and in those days nvidia was pushing those effects hard so they were usually pretty flashy and noticeable

ashen spindle
#

bl2 had very nice cloth destruction and fluids that only work on the gpu level effects

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

no the higher levels had much better options

#

like the flags to shoot werent even there without the higher physx tier

#

like around the bunker level

vagrant pagoda
#

i remember doing driver hacks to get nvida to work as a physx card with a 9800gt as only physx

#

that was after i had to upgrade from a dedicated card

#

as the og phyx cards got outpased by cheap gpus fast

astral haven
#

afaik it was already worse at launch

vagrant pagoda
#

nah i had one at launch it worked in all games

#

but by 2010/11 it would choke

astral haven
#

yea but it was a 6600? of some kind and there were some faster 6700 series cards for cheaper?

vagrant pagoda
#

it was never a gpu

#

but once nvidia added cuda support it was about that fast

#

when ever the second batman game came out

#

11 i think

#

the ppu would choke

#

they did have a prototyle 8800 or 9800 based one after the buyout

#

but it never made it out offically

astral haven
#

i thought that the "ageia core" was actually just an nvidia gpu with custom firmware

vagrant pagoda
#

nope it was mips

#

there was a second gen one that was a 8800 or 9800 that was shown, but it never happened

astral haven
#

"it was mips" nvidia used a mips architecture until they switched to a risc architecture just a few years ago

vagrant pagoda
#

tey didnt even use a ppu XD

vagrant pagoda
#

fx 5800 is the same transistor count 125m, and node 130nm, but die size is 182 vs 199

astral haven
#

would have been 6000 series

#

but i cant find any of them that match either

vagrant pagoda
#

also pci

#

with no bridge chip

#

basicly knocks out all the gpus it could even be close to

astral haven
#

geforce 6 needed bridge?

vagrant pagoda
#

yeah agp or pcie only

#

and agp was bridged

astral haven
#

oh hmm

#

oh wow yea that doesnt line up, i didnt think tsmc was willing to do that for such a small player but if they had asus do it for them, that makes sense

vagrant pagoda
#

but batman and bl2 are the onyl games its good in

astral haven
#

"dell"

#

knowing what i know about dell now id bet on asus making the boards for them

alot has changed in 20 years tho

magic numbers you have to have, but are patented so you gotta jump through some hoops to use them

vagrant pagoda
#
