Was sort of a famous failure case with the Debian installer until (including) 11, where they refused to ship anything that isn't open source -- including the amdgpu firmware.

With 12 they split a new repository from non-free called non-free-firmware and packages from that one are now allowed in the installer.

That toggle was always there. The issue was getting the installer to display anything in the first place.

No, non-free has been part of the official repros for a long time. Can't swear on the toggle, since I tended to use the unofficial-but-hosted-by-Debian installer images that did have that toggle for many, many years.

But on AMD the installer simply wouldn't show up, because it didn't have the firmware to initialise the GPU so that it could display anything.

Nope.

And that is why I know that those fancy new cards won't do anything without the firmware.

I don't really know when it started. AMD was just a clustermess back then that nobody would touch those GPU with a ten-foot pole on Linux.

It has to do with a lot of 'driver' functionality being executed on the card itself and all that code needs to be loaded into the GPU on initialisation.

A.k.a. the 'firmware'.
