vram usage doesnt mean anything

lyric hatch
#

Yeah gpu will allocate vram without actually using it

astral haven
#

vram usage should always be 100%, anything else is a failure on the games part

sharp badger
#

Ok

crimson wigeon
#

Ok now launch anything else that uses the GPU and oops you filled it completely and framerate is ass

astral haven
#

thats not how memory works

sharp badger
#

Just comparing the usage to AW2

crimson wigeon
#

And yes when I was still stuck with a 4GiB VRAM GPU it was hell running anything modern, it was always full

astral haven
#

perhaps, but have you ever wondered if it was perhaps that the gpu was actually slow?

crimson wigeon
#

How about this, I look at certain object in game, GPU suddenly cools down while claiming usage is 100%, framerate goes to shit, look away: instantly smooth. Restart game: now perfectly smooth at least for some time until VRAM is overflowed again

astral haven
#

people dont understand what vram capacity issues look like
and what they dont look like except in super rare edge cases is low fps

lyric hatch
#

3070 still has a comfortable lead with less vram, definitely doesn't look like vram is the limiting factor here dogekek

astral haven
#

if you have insufficient vram, you should be seeing high disk usage, low detail textures, and popin

#

looooots of popin

crimson wigeon
#

Oh yeah that too

astral haven
#

the only way to know if its vram is if you take 2 identical gpus and swap the chips for lower capacity ones
problem is noone does this
nvidia cuts off cores and memory bandwidth, amd cuts off cores

crimson wigeon
#

And also when I patched the driver to try to stuff more into VRAM instead of allowing it to spill the extreme framerate droppage was reduced šŸ¤”

sharp badger
#

Will have to see how the 3080 compares once the embargos lift

#

Just don't feel the need to upgrade yet but might change during the year

crimson wigeon
#

Hm, the amdgpu driver does have a simple argument to pretend the GPU has less VRAM, perhaps someone who feels like testing could experiment with that to see how it relates to framerate in games

astral haven
#

AMD also had a feature that allowed you to pretend like you had more VRAM and that also increased performance. Even though your VRAM amount didn't change, then it was just using system memory.

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah, I suppose also part of this is the games themselves, how well they handle memory management

astral haven
#

Should nvidia know about this and compensate? Sure. And should they also implement a similar fake VRAM feature? Probably. (Although amd killed theirs)
But they generally match things to the console of the time, and that's exactly all that it needs to be, unfortunately for us.
Last game I know of with actually high VRAM requirements relative to visual complexity was Shadow of Mordor.

wheat yacht
#

I wonder if they’re ever gonna go all out for a gaming gpu

#

Like a new titan card

ashen spindle
#

people dont understand what that means, if the 5090 is basically fully enabled chip there is nothing they can put out as a titan card above it

astral haven
#

Nv72 gaming edition when lol

ashen spindle
#

the 90/90ti are basically titans now they just sold it as a gaming gpu now so people eat it up lol

I thought they stopped doing the 90ti cards

wheat yacht

I heard there was a discarded 4090ti was there ever a reason for that or nah

ashen spindle

"Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claimed in an interview with CNBC that Nvidia had spent around $10 billion in research and development for Blackwell's NV-HBI die interconnect. Veteran semiconductor engineer Jim Keller, who had worked on AMD's K7, K12 and Zen architectures, criticized this figure and claimed that the same outcome could be achieved for $1 billion through using Ultra Ethernet rather than the proprietary NVLink system."
Thought this was an interesting addition to the Blackwell Wikipedia page

ashen spindle
#

sounds about right

#

spending more to keep it in house and lock your ecosystem down is a profitable way if you are a monopoly

wheat yacht

Will Nvidia ever be taken to court for their practices

lyric hatch

There is other stuff Nvidia is getting class actioned for

ashen spindle

lyric hatch

Intel PresentMon

#

It was showed to him by Gamers Nexus aka Steve lol

ashen spindle
#

... how the fuck did he not know about that before, wasnt he doing reviews at some point???

gentle osprey
#

Lol yeah he said that himself, he doesn't know how he didn't know about it before

ashen spindle
#

..present mon is what basically all overlays use as the basis to get the data from

#

rtss, frameview etc. all are skins for presentmon xD

gentle osprey
#

Yeah tldr is he's basically saying things like HWinfo64 have a slower polling rate for getting data , whereas this is faster , etc etc

ashen spindle
#

oh god was hwinfo the only thing he used for reviews lmao

gentle osprey
#

I wouldn't think so but kinda sounds like it lol

fair gull
#

is rtss a presentmon skin?

gentle osprey
ashen spindle

skin might be a bit hyperbole but it uses presentmon yes

astral haven
#

rtss is an aggregator, it supports presentmon among others

ashen spindle
#

ah

magic minnow
ashen spindle
#

then again I think even with the overhead hwinfo for enthusiats is more than enough, you can still use gpu busy and such from it, not like you are doing frame analysis lol

astral haven
#

i wouldnt be surprised if hwinfo used presentmon tbh

gentle osprey
#

Yeah that's how he's basically explaining people can use prensentmon is to see if they have a bottleneck etc

astral haven
#

its MIT not gpl, pretty cool

ashen spindle
#

I assume it might use presentmon for gpubusy and such to not redo that but still the much better tool than just presentmons default skin

astral haven
#

heck its pretty crazy that intel is running this

ashen spindle
#

im just flabbergasted how hes only now thinking about how he could use logging software for looking at new hardware

#

guess it just confirms my opinion of just telling people look at his watercooling videos and ignore the rest lmfao

astral haven
#

sure but its worth noting that consolidation in benchmarking is real bad

ashen spindle
#

I would argue looking at benchmarks from someone who very clearly lacks technical understanding might be worse

astral haven
#

gn has chased their own tail into a knot, their benchmarking is nearing uselessness for games now

ashen spindle
#

I just dont think I could trust jayz data when he seemingly still doesnt understand what supported ram frequencies are and when stability is supposed to be guaranteed lol

balmy vector
#

GN is always better

astral haven
#

nah

ashen spindle
#

gn has their own set of issues

#

but I at least trust steve to not read 1DPC stable numbers from a table when running quadrank lol

balmy vector
#

i love jay but i like watching him for the sillyWolfSip

astral haven
#

id guess that jayz's reviews are both more accurate (for in game results) and closer to what an end user gets

#

gn choosing not to benchmark popular games is really dumb

gentle osprey
#

HUB is best

ashen spindle
#

idk I wouldnt trust jay to notice when a setting doesnt get applied like it was in cyperpunk when that and doing correct setups to have comparable accurate data

#

the average enduser doesnt switch between 3 sets of gpus

astral haven
#

sure but i wouldnt trust gn to test realistic settings in cyberpunk (aka settings that the game would select on its own)

ashen spindle
#

thats fine, I can find out when someone else has the game if RT just adds flat 20% on everything and still have consistent data I just look at as a relative

#

I can still make use of that data

astral haven
#

we can, but its still misleading

ashen spindle
#

sure but thats different from being unable to trust the data to be correct

astral haven
#

i trust the precision of gn

#

theres no shot that anyone is more precise than them

#

but precision and accuracy are very different

#

and you need both to be correct imo

ashen spindle
#

and I dont trust jay enough to correctly read the reviewers guide lol

astral haven
#

🤷

#

gn will never publish a scaling factor, and they probably even think its justified since game built in benchmarks are even less accurate than them

gentle osprey
#

If these reviewers really wanted to give us average user results then make a test bench with all the bloatware and rgb software installed possible and a corrupted windows install

#

then run a test

balmy vector
#

my hatsune miku desktop buddy is a necessity

lyric hatch
ashen spindle
#

looool

astral haven
#

crazy thing is gn is the same as userbenchmark practically, yet noone cares, they are a saint

ashen spindle
#

ehhh

#

they dont change tests to make one brand look better

astral haven
#

neither does userbenchmark

ashen spindle
#

yes they did

astral haven
#

nope

ashen spindle
#

or how the ranking is calculated idk what it was exactly

astral haven
#

the tests have stayed the same, and the accurate results have always been up on their website

#

its just rankings yep

ashen spindle
#

which is arguably worse as thats the only thing most users see on an SEO website

astral haven
#

maybe, but all that people see on fps charts is the number

#

and they will buy the cheapest card that meets the number they want

#

if the number is off by 20%, they will be buying a 20% better or worse card than they need

#

its looking like for this gen thats gonna be a fkn grand at the top

#

like they are doing good science, but what they arent doing is providing a useful review

#

only redeeming thing is i actually think that people might not look at the numbers and just the relative positioning of the cards

ashen spindle
#

yes which is why nvidia always sells due to halo tier and why I think the UB ranking is worse for the average consumer because they look at the top result and then take what works in their price range

astral haven
#

i mean gn just so happens to run into the same problem tho no?

ashen spindle
#

they dont present the rankings different than what their data shows though unlike UB

astral haven
#

kinda

#

gn changes the data to match the desired result, ub changes the interpretation of the data to match the desired result

#

gns results are more trustworthy because the desired result is precise data at the cost of accurate data

#

where ubms desired result is amd at the bottom of the chart

#

but the actual data itself is less doctored even if the result is bad

i think what Monkey is looking for is more akin to the LTSC version than the N versions, the N version only removes media player, which really is not that significant.
LTSC is truly barebones and removes the windows store, cortana, etc. but does require an enterprise license iirc.
It's made for embedded and other mission critical type systems
I use it, when I have to use Windows, anyway

There's lot of FUD that gets posted regarding the whole de-bloating of Windows which usually results in people running random scripts that'll end up breaking something.

I do wish Microsoft wouldn't make it so hard to use Windows 11 with an offline account as it doesn't really hurt anybody. Any OS component/driver control panel that downloads from the store will do so automatically anyway.

I didn't say it was a guarantee in the next few years. I'm saying that there's interesting research being done to help make Nuclear less of a risk - especially economical.

ashen spindle

yeah but you need to make it a lower economical risk for it to match solar/wind first and then it needs to still overtake to make more sense than those lol

thankfully germany had renewables is what you mean KEKW

you can make your house energy self sufficent with hydrogen storage, its just not cheap enough or efficent enough to make sense for everyone lol, its like 50% energy lost but if you are in a house in a forest all on your own without a connection, that could work all year around

too expensive or what

ashen spindle

well the politics at the time when fukushima happened were very conservative so they made sure people dont vote them out for the greens but made sure to keep the coal lobby happy

compact relic

Burning coal is much cheaper i agree but bruh

ashen spindle
#

no its not lol

#

we subsidies coal with like a billion+ each year

old marlin
#

in the end we bet more on gas, which was a mistake imo

#

but at least we also built a lot of renewables

ashen spindle
#

basically it was a effort to take wind out of the sails of a energy movement that people wanted by doing only what benefits them in the ends the most instead of what would be the best long term solution

old marlin
#

ya

#

reason for getting rid of wind power now is to make us more dependant on russian gas

ashen spindle
#

and thus we now have right wing parties using the 15+ year old debt to say wind energy and the green party are the reason our costs went up

old marlin
#

to essentially force us to stop supporting ukraine

ashen spindle
#

this is a nice graph, you can see where solar especiall starts to grow, around 2011 when fukushima happened

#

now imagine all these years we would have put the coal subsidies into more local solar or whatnot

compact relic
#

wasnt there some EU directive basically forcing big buildings to have solar panels in the future too

ashen spindle
#

yeah thats happening here now too for new housings

#

but we basically lost all local manufacturing to china because they put subisidies out for them

At CES, QDEL was the buzzword on everyone’s mind. Short for Quantum Dot Electroluminescent, this display tech uses quantum dots to create light directly, offering OLED-like performance without drawbacks like burn-in or limited lifespan. Despite initial concerns about seeing progress, a prototype emerged, tucked away at TCL CSOT’s booth—a promisi...

ā–¶ Play video
cursive summit
#

Incredible, the faster QDEL comes the faster we can kill off OLED

#

The blue light diode dying fast though is still a big hurdle to overcome

ashen spindle
#

uhh we dont really know what the current issues are with qdel so we dont know what the current hurdles are

cursive summit
#

We know what the 2024 hurdles were and that was the blue color dying extremely quickly

#

And that was a technological barrier that nobody knew if we'd even be able to overcome

#

I hope they figured out anything on that front

vagrant pagoda
ashen spindle
#

its just using quantum dots for the light directly, so nano led sorta

vagrant pagoda
#

qdel is used for both the qd on lcd and qd on el

cursive summit
#

QDEL uses quantum dots itself, it's not used anywhere

#

It's its own technology

vagrant pagoda
#

yeah its been at ces for like 3 years in a row

ashen spindle
#

no this is like the second

cursive summit
#

2024 was the first one I think

#

TCL might have had an exhibition somewhere before that, they are leading on that one

#

I think Sharp also are doing progress on it, can't remember

vagrant pagoda
#

boe had one in like 21 or 22

ashen spindle
#

tcl didnt even have anything before today, sharp made the previous years one

vagrant pagoda
#

and samsung before that

cursive summit
#

But yeah I hope they do make a major push, QDEL is incredible

#

The price and performance is just so incredible it'll be the natural successor to LCD panels

vagrant pagoda
#

i mean it has the same burnin issue as oled

cursive summit
#

Though the barrier is gigantic, the blue quantum dot has low lifespan, far lower than OLED

ashen spindle
#

boe had AMQLED which is similar but not the same I think

cursive summit
#

When they overcome that, and it's probably as difficult as inventing the blue light diode, we'll have the next gen panel tech that obsoletes everything

cursive summit
vagrant pagoda
#

i mean it will be a while before its better than microled

cursive summit
#

Not currently

#

Microled with QDEL being a thing is not even worth pursuing

#

Microled is insanely expensive and has no real benefits over QDEL

#

But that's theoretical

vagrant pagoda
#

other than the fact that microled has zero burn in and image retention issues

#

which qdel and oled do

ashen spindle
#

qdel is just a different approach to solving oled burn in issue

vagrant pagoda
#

current qdel has WORSE burnin than oled though

ashen spindle
#

nothing says its guaranteed to take over if you can just make oled not die in a normal lifespan

#

so for all we know qdel might never make it to market

cursive summit
#

Yes, current QDEL is worse than OLED by a long mile and we don't even know if it's fixable

vagrant pagoda
#

the down side for microled is cost

cursive summit
#

But if they fix the blue light problem, it'll be several times longer living than OLED

ashen spindle
#

oled needs to fix something they are improving on rapidly, qdel needs to even work and then be improved on

#

its nice tech and I hope it works well but I dont even think its likely it kills of oled lol

vagrant pagoda
#

qdled is where i see it going

#

all hail nakamura

cursive summit
#

OLED is still pretty expensive, though it's getting cheaper, QDEL has the benefits of being with higher theoretical longevity, just as good of a picture and being insanely cheap to manufacture

#

Again it's pretty funny that QDEL can just be.. printed, the cost is insanely low

#

But man if it isn't just sad the main problem with it is potentially unfixable

vagrant pagoda
#

how do you think they make oleds?

#

they print them

#

and how do you think they put qd on oleds and microled?

#

printing

cursive summit
#

Except it's nowhere near as cheap as QDEL is purported to be

vagrant pagoda
#

the issue with qdled is literally the qd burn in

cursive summit
#

I wonder what the refresh rates would be on QDELs

#

I have not seen anything on that front

vagrant pagoda
#

same as oled and microled, as fast as the driver

cursive summit
#

We can hope

vagrant pagoda
#

its a balance of heat and speed

#

faster display = more heat

cursive summit
#

It's non-organic so maybe heat would be less of an issue

rough osprey
#

oh no qdel again

vagrant pagoda
#

qds hate heat

#

how do you keep skipping that

ashen spindle
#

I think you are too hung up on the organic part of oled, thats not the only downside they have lol

vagrant pagoda
#

the two big downsides of oled is they hate heat and the cost

ashen spindle
#

from what you could get and what downsides there are I would almost see qdel as basically another oled flavor from consumer viewpoint, if they make it into a product

vagrant pagoda
#

oleds dont last long, burn in, have retention and arent bright all due to how bad they are with heat

#

right now qdel has the same issue, but even more extreme

#

its why they arent making just normal led lighting and such with qd

#

all high power leds are just different phosphors on uv or blue leds, qd are more efficient than phosphor

#

but they cant take the heat

        # Now we zip to encrypt
        $ZIP_CMD $TEMP | pv -L 200M > $BACKUPNAME
        chmod 700 $BACKUPNAME

        # Move to the backup folder
        mv $BACKUPNAME /$BACKUP_FOLDER/$BACKUPNAME

        # Cleanup
        cd
        rm -rf $BACKUP_TEMP
}

so i have this as part of my bash script to backup server stuff

#

but for some reason the tar ball fails and "cant be opened as archive" a the end of it

#

btw this worked before i added pv to limit bandwidth to 200Mib

vagrant pagoda
#

tar cvpzf

fair gull
#

huh is that cause i dont give it an output filename?

vagrant pagoda
#

tar predates dash for optional options

fair gull
#

weird worked fine before modifying it

vagrant pagoda
#

to encrypt

fair gull
#

to keep permisions and what not

#

the zip at the end only encrypts the contents and headers

#

at least from my testing with restoring from the backups tarballs worked better

vagrant pagoda
#

you mean like a tar.gz lmao

fair gull
#

i mean i wish tar offered encryption and header encryption

vagrant pagoda
#

gunzip supports multiple files

fair gull
#

no issue for me at this point

#

script already ran fine

vagrant pagoda
#

more like that isnt what tar was made for

fair gull
#

so as long as i can limit bw usage now itll be perfect

vagrant pagoda
#

tar is for tape backup

#

tape systems generally had thier own compression techs

#

they are better than defalt as they exploit the tape system

fair gull
#

hmmm should i gz or let zip compress

vagrant pagoda
#

so it would be bad to compress before sending to tape

vagrant pagoda
fair gull
#

does gzip offer the same algos?

#

so fast

#

what the crap is going on

vagrant pagoda
fair gull
#

blazing fast tar moment it seems

vagrant pagoda
fair gull
#

uh no pretty sure its SSD backed

vagrant pagoda
#

odd its slow

#

tar generally is disk limited

fair gull
#

im limiting it to 200Mib with pv cause if i let it go full 1.5gib then some game servers crash

#

(especially mc hates me writing full speed to the disk)

vagrant pagoda
fair gull
#

and the man page makes me even more confused on the dash options

#

oh i see it supports all 3

pale sigil
#

ok these are speeds with it in my office and me in my bedroom so i will take the temp win

vagrant pagoda
#

pipes are why windows can never be taken serious as a sever

#

barely

fair gull
# fair gull so fast

figured it out... forgot to add a K after the variable containing the limit in Kib

#

so it read it as bytes

#

powershell is really nice

#

did massive automated reencoding with it a while ago including auto removal of unwanted subtitles and such

#

im still contemplating using powershell on my linux server

#

cause bash sucks

vagrant pagoda
#

also why not just umask at the top instead of 3 chmods

fair gull
#

the issue im trying to avoid is things changing while i tar. so i copy the data first as its way faster and then tar the "snapshot"

vagrant pagoda
#

use zfs from the start

fair gull
#

not an option at this point

#

but yeah idk if its safe to just copy the folders as they are without changing perms to 700 on the temp backup folder

#

mainly cause i dont fully understand permissions in linux with folders and such

vagrant pagoda
#

i mean what is it for?

fair gull
#

it backs up important things like nginx configs, certs, mail server, bitwarden vault, game servers and such

#

well my main issue with understanding perms is if you can list/read/write to subfolders if the parent folder is for example 700

#

like if i have /a/b/c can i just read/list folder b and file c even if a is 700 and im not the owner

#

mainly concerns this backup stuff

#

as i put things into new folders that can contain sensitive data

#

well there is some freinds who have their own users

#

yeah well i need to copy it to a temp folder first

#

and that temp folder is what im mainly worried about

#

yeah i cleanup

#

but the whole perms on root of the temp is what i dont fully understand

#

ye my main issue is the whole can you still access files in the folder if youd know the path somehow

#

so if i have /temp/something/file and file is 777 but temp is 700 then they cant access file in any way

fair gull
#

well tar is still giving weird errors

#

ill have to debug it tomorrow

Is it possible to unbind a key but still have custom keybinds for it or just like not make the key respond?

#

I have removed most of the keys from my numpad other than the numbers themselves cuz I wanna try some keybinds

#

But I assume it doesn't work since they're unbound?

digital cliff
#

uhhh I don't really understand what it is you want to do

spare panther

Like these keys. I disabled them because I don't use their normal functions, but I still wanna be able to bind them into something else

#

Is there any way to do that?

#

Or do they need their standard function

lyric hatch
#

Just rebind them to something else it overrides whatever it was binded to previously it doesn't do both simultaneously

digital cliff

yeah you unbound them

but.. you want them bound

so bind them to what you want em to do giggle
