umbral heron
# cursive summit It would be nice if Steam lowered under 1 million sales share cut to like 12%

Honestly - I don't care
We'd pay the same price regardless, and only few indie devs would get to this threshold, which means AAA studios would get most of the cuts, which means more money for their execs (because people who actually work on games are on salary), so no, thank you
And at least Valve is doing something with the money they are earning from their cut, like literally carrying the whole Linux gaming ecosystem hanaSusSips

ashen spindle
#

Nono you misunderstood, currently only AAA devs get a better cut when it should be indies who take a smaller hit

#

If it’s under 1 mil sales indie devs get 12% and if they explode and get more then they can join the higher tax bracket

#

Steam atm is literally reverse income tax brackets

umbral heron
#

Ooooh, yeah, you're right

#

My apologies SilvervalePrays

ashen spindle
#

and the only reason steam lowered that even is because that was the premise of the epic games launcher

#

they didnt want their big hits to jump to get 20% more money essentially since at that time people assumed epic would put more than 2 people on the dev team for that lol

#

which was nice because thats why ubi and EA decided to at least back onto those stores and probably big reason why r* launcher didnt leave steam either, but it still screws indie devs who have little sales and dont cost valve anything near the 30% they take

#

the point is they could lower the base cut significantly and still have enough money to do all the things they want to do

mild dome
#

Like:

  • AAAA companies make their own launchers: all their launchers wind up being the bare minimum yet at the same time resource hogs and players wind up hating their booger aids launchers so much they refuse to use them. Forcing the AAAA companies back to Steam anyway

  • Indie games try to launch from their own websites: Find that running all the resources to distribute your game is a pain in the ass, and it's cheaper to just use Steam and GoG, which also do to their popularity allows more players to see you

  • Google Stadia: Everyone is revolted by the idea that you have to pay for the game, then pay a subscription on Stadia, a service that if shutdown would lock people out of their purchases forever, from Google, a company infamous of shutting down their services. Stadia gets shutdown after no one uses it

  • The Epic Game Store, a true Steam competitor launches: EGS is so barebones it doesn't even have a shopping cart never mind community pages or reviews, winds up resorting to paying hefty sums of cash to studios to use their launcher exclusively, immediately pissing of gamers who don't trust Epic Games. Allows crypto scams to flood their store with cheaply made unity asset flips designed to sell "NFTs". And although it forced Steam to drop their fees to devs to remain competitive hasn't achieved much more then expending billions of Epic's money

reef patrol
#

Website launched game - What is this, Battlefield? dogekek

#

the flasbacks begin

umbral heron
#

At least Google owned it with Stadia, refunded all purchases and updated controllers so you can use them as BT ones

ashen spindle
#

also all these points are not relevant, if you are a quasi monopol and you are currently being the good guys, you are still a monopol, those things can happen at the same time and need to not be conflated

old marlin
#

small reminder that valve is one of the most profitable companies per employee giggle

#

they absolutely do not need the 30% cut

#

thing is their platform is still so good and ubiquitous that if you actually got a "finished" product it is almost certainly worth it to launch there vs itch.io or something

ashen spindle
#

due to the wolfire court docs we know valve literally had better profit margins than nvidia and apple combined in some years

umbral heron
#

As a customer - I don't care how much cut they take, games will cost the same anyway, and they have best policies for customers out there, so neuroShrug
As Linux user - They heavily invest in Linux gaming ecosystem, so I don't mind

old marlin
#

peepoShrug I would prefer if indies get a better cut

ashen spindle
#

as a customer you do care because especially indie and AA games would literally be able to make another game/patch/dlc if they had 20% more money from sales sometimes

old marlin
#

with AAA stuff I don't care about publishers getting more money

ashen spindle
#

its just the same issue why the EGS premise isnt attracting as many people, its less tangible to see that a lower cut means you get a follow up to your favorite indie game than if you pay 1-$ less

mild dome
#

Part of anti-trust investigations is that they have to prove you are being anti-competitive either through:

  • Selling at a loss to choke out smaller players
  • Contracts that hamstring your customers and clients from using alternative services
  • Using an infrastructure or a technology advantage to keep people out
  • Using the court system to legally beat your competitors to death with legal costs

As far as I know Steam's only crime is being better then everyone else

old marlin
#

yea too bad the entire plattform sucked so much giggle

#
  • sweeney said some very sus shit surrounding it
cursive summit
#

Does EGS have a Workshop yet? Steam Workshop is amazing

ashen spindle
mild dome
#

EGS is also partially owned by Tencent, a Chinese mega investor that's quite suspicious

umbral heron
#

Fortnite has something like that dogekek
In the future we will be launching games straight from Forknife, mark my words

old marlin
#

since the ones that would actually benefit people the most would be the ones that do not get the better cut

ashen spindle
mild dome
cursive summit
#

Doubt that much would change if Valve had to lower their share they take, what, Gabe Newell will be unable to buy yet another megayacht?

umbral heron
ashen spindle
mild dome
#

Tell me the news

old marlin
#

last I checked the thing they hung up on was steam forcing you to not resell steam keys for your own game for less than the steam price

#

although afaik you don't pay the 30% cut so you earn more money

ashen spindle
#

Wolfire was explicitly told by Valve that Valve would delist the title from Steam if sold at a lower price on other storefronts.

old marlin
#

from how I understood it they only mentioned that about steam keys but that is something else

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

also valves operating margin since 2009 has been between 70% and 85% fwiw

umbral heron
old marlin
#

yea obv

#

cause otherwise you can make a competing storefront to steam while using steams services

ashen spindle
#

idk sounds to me more like an issue that would not happen if your store is superior anyway on merits alone so no reason to have that clause

old marlin
#

you could always undercut peepoShrug

ashen spindle
#

for example if your base cut is 12 like egs not 30% it wouldnt be worth it to sell keys elsewhere so its not that hard to think of how they could do that

old marlin
#

running a webstore is dirt cheap

#

it would be absolutely worth to resell with a 5% cut

#

if you don't have to host anything but a webstore and a mailing system to send out a steam key

ashen spindle
#

and steam offers things like points for customizing profile and all that, so steam has things they offer you for spending money that those resells wouldnt have

#

sounds to me at least like something that could very well go forward on merit and then have people who crunch nubmers for a living present that to a court

old marlin
#

giggle are you trying to tell me that steam points actually are a selling point to anyone

ashen spindle
#

hell yeah they are

umbral heron
#

They are kinda... useless once you buy stuff to decorate your profile
Only that you can buy a badge once every 6 months neuroShrug

mild dome
#

Ok so now I got interested in reading into this case and yeah
They are not bitching about being unable to lower their prices on other platforms like Itchio, or GoG, but instead are bitching they can't sell Steam keys for less even though Steam is providing them with literally all their services

cursive summit
#

I never understood what that whole point thing

#

It's just flexing I guess? I don't get the need for that

#

Steam though is amazing cause don't they also provide code for making self-hosted servers work for games?

cursive summit
#

And interconnect through Steam services?

#

Steam is great for developers, they just charge a lot for it

ashen spindle
#

I mean, just take how often lana posted about getting different steam deck loading things with steam points duck_sip others do that with their profile and its not like valve couldn't add more benefits

lost carbon

cursive summit

old marlin
# old marlin hell no

you can buy profile customizations and the cosmetics you can get from trading cards (outside the "achievements")

#

most "useful" thing is seasonal badges

fair gull
mild dome
#

The trading card system was kind of cool with the art, but man it was kind of annoying to use
"Hey man, now that you played that game you purchased 12 months ago, here's 4 cards that are all the same, you can sell each card on the market for 1 cent each, and buy the other 12 your are missing for 5 cents each, good luck!"

lost carbon
#

no collecting just use steam normally and open up a normal marketplace

#

Wayy easier

old marlin
#

wanna guess how many of my foils have listing in the market

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah lets not forget the steam market that valve takes a cut out of for just moving a database entry from one profile to another dogekek

old marlin
#

oh actually nvm it was just bugged

#

only one does not have one

#

but also

#

how many people know that the cards have a full artwork lol

mild dome
old marlin
#

that katamari cow for example

ashen spindle
#

did you know if you sell some rare skin like a cs knife for 1500 on the market valve charges you 75 for changing the entry from your account to the buyer dogekek

#

definitely needed

old marlin
#

peepoShrug I mean they basically pioneered it

#

sure, cut could have been smaller

#

I doubt they expected it to explode as much as it did

ashen spindle
#

I mean they raised the max prices you can list something for and could have changed the cut at the same time since its the same cost for them

umbral heron
#

Reason why people sell high-value items outside of Steam market hanaSit

ashen spindle
#

yup

mild dome
#

It's dumb that valve charges by percentile, but that's the way the cookie crumbles, and apparently no one else can make a competent game store marketplace

ashen spindle
#

lower cut or cap it at a certain amount or anything would mean people are more likely to use steam market, which means both less scams and more sales that end up getting taxed

umbral heron
ashen spindle
#

I think the market sales are just 5% flat iirc

umbral heron
#

5 for Valve, 10 for developer nod

ashen spindle
mild dome
#

EGS is like: "Instead of using your items on a database, we used an NFT. So it's yours to own,
But also we own the blockchain that your item is on so it's more like an extremely inefficient private database but you use ethereum to buy the tokens instead"

ashen spindle
#

yeah I forgot about that

old marlin
#

still not sure if it was legal for ubisoft to pay employees bonuses in nfts

#

sounds a lot like company scrip to me

ashen spindle
#

so yeah the only markets that are super active afaik are TF2, dota and CS skins which is valve games so they really do take more like 15% of all market sales lol

#

so that just shows my point being even worse than I thought xD

old marlin
#

there are some other popular ones like rust

umbral heron
ashen spindle
#

but lets say they keep that, just another point showing why they really could easily afford to lower cuts on game sales very easily

mild dome
old marlin
#

it's basically exactly like scrip

#

Company scrip is scrip (a substitute for government-issued legal tender or currency) issued by a company to pay its employees. It can only be exchanged in company stores owned by the employers. In the United Kingdom, such truck systems have long been formally outlawed under the Truck Acts. In the United States, payment in scrip became illegal in...

mild dome

old marlin
umbral heron
old marlin
#

if you wanna resell it you can only do so through ubisoft, paying their fees etc

mild dome
#

Yeah sorry I thought you meant like Ethereum NFTs, which although still shit can be freely sold to another sucker

old marlin

they can be sold to another sucker

but only if you can find one

and even then only on the ubisoft blockchain that thing was on

What's stupid is it was clearly still underwarranty and idiot just tossed it into an ewaste bin outside instead of like... warrantying it

It was like late 2017 thing was barely a year old lol

And no wasn't a rig that had been brought into the shop

because on desktop you can get the same or better performance with an aircooler while it costing less, making less sound, having no chance to have water issues and only not working if you want tiny from factors

Without being an expert. I think you can get a better, more square air cooler.
The motherboard seems over the top? B650 not doing it for you in terms of sockets?
4TB NVME? I mean it's your money. I would go for a 2TB one and a massive harddisk for slow media storage. Could even chuck games you don't use over there on occasion if your internet is slow.

tight dragon
charred nexus
deft raptor
#

There's a crazy deal about 4tb nvme if you live in Canada

tight dragon

I only say that because I can see the openings, unless that's just for the design itself.

charred nexus

cursive summit

For a similar price, it's a general upgrade

And you'd save about 70$ over NH-D15

#

I don't see why you need X870E either

deft raptor
tight dragon
#

I'm not trying to future proof, although I really should keep it on the table

cursive summit
#

If you just get a B650 you can get like 450$ off

deft raptor

The acceptable max amd chipset would be x670e, no more

cursive summit
#

Trident Z5 Neo, great binned memory usually, try checking for DDR-8000, sometimes they can rarely be on a bargain deal for 200ish

deft raptor
#

x870e will always demand high premium and bigger board size for no reason for someone that does have one gpu

wise condor
#

Anyone know if any keycaps that match the optimum case aesthetic in an ISO layout. Real pain in the arse trying to find a good match.

cursive summit
#

I'd nowadays steer clear from Samsung, but 4TB for 270$ is a decent deal, would check for SN850X or such

tight dragon
cursive summit
#

Toughpower GF1 iirc when I checked though has horrid overcurrent protection

#

You could get a tiny bit better units for a little bit more

tight dragon
cursive summit

And honestly, since you are already spending an insane amount on the motherboard, if you save 450$ on that and another 70$ on cooler, you can try looking for a 4090

cursive summit
