honest pilot
wheat plume
#

OH GOSH NO, the way they add in the arrow keys on the 63% model is by making the rows narrower

#

I hate this

honest pilot
#

If i use my keyboard just for gaming is the 60he then better than the 80he?

midnight summit
#

for example, would you like to access the arrow keys without layers?

honest pilot
#

Why is 80he better?

wheat plume
#

8k polling

honest pilot
#

Yes i asked

#

But is it just the poling rate?

wheat plume
#

80HE = larger layout + 8k polling
60HE = smaller layout + more case / modding support + 1k polling

honest pilot
#

I dont thing i will mod my keyboard a lot i think the only thing would be the keycaps

#

The 80he would cost me 20€ more than the 60he if i say i dont need keycaps because of my steelseries keycaps. So should i pay the 20€ more and get the 80he for 200€

midnight summit
#

I wouldn't use those keycaps to be fair, i'd rather get the stock wooting 80he and change the keycaps afterward

honest pilot

ashen spindle
#

well not listed as pcie device because its not connected via pcie but yes similar to that

#

well they are quite literally on the cpu silicon

#

no its not part of the cpu core

#

its a seperate block on the SoC

#

the npu is part of the SoC tile, thats the tile that has HDMI, usb etc. logic in it

#

think like an APU but instead of integrated graphic its just integrated npu

#

on stuff like amds monolithic strix its set up like this

#

well yes and no

wheat plume
#

Ah
So the useless npu is taking up space on the soc

Ffs

ashen spindle
#

the physical size doesnt mean much since stuff like cache and analog logic dont scale donw

wheat plume
#

Sand xd

ashen spindle
#

so if you have a 3nm cpu core with idk 120million transistors on on mm2, that means you pack as much of that into the cores, but for the memory phy that might only be 10m tr/mm2

#

because you dont need your hdmi connector to run at 5ghz

#

so theres no point making it with smaller transistors when its easier and cheaper keeping it big

iron wave

I'm going to guess no one has info on this but: does anyone know of a PCI-e switch that could do PCI-e 3x4?

ashen spindle
#

@astral haven probably knows that best

#

what exactly do you need one for

astral haven
#

There are dozens of options

iron wave
#

The idea is to shove multiple devices into a M.2 slot.

#

So 2 PCI-e devices sharing 4 lanes from a M.2 slot.

astral haven
#

Non m.2 pcie devices?

iron wave
#

Yeah but that's not a huge deal, you can just use OCuLink and other silliness.

astral haven
#

Well if you are OK with M.2 there's a screaming deal on a U. 2 quad m. 2 carrier on eBay rn

iron wave
#

Oh?

astral haven
iron wave
#

Oh that's U.2.

astral haven
#

Yea, nab 3 m. 2 to oculink and a oculink to u.2 and you'll be good to go for super cheap

iron wave
#

That's kinda crazy.

#

I wonder what that huge BGA is.

astral haven
#

There's a thread on sth
I think they posted the lspci

iron wave
#

Unfortunately that's quite a bit more beefy and huge than my silly plans which is just 3x4 -> 2x3x4.

astral haven
#

This is probably the smallest PCIe 3.0 option in general

#

The 2.0 single port switches are smaller

iron wave
#

Hm, that's mildly unfortunate then.

#

I guess this is more of a crazy server sort of thing, but with how few lanes consumer chips have I was hoping there would be some options.

astral haven
#

For full on PCIe slots not really
There's a consumer u.2 to quad m. 2 but its only x2

iron wave
#

Honestly looking for chips for a stupid project to bikeshed.

#

Found this interesting, it's as you said Quin

#

The demand is there, sadly, but supply is non existent eh

#

Some local listings also appeared, 0 supply

ashen spindle
#

Demand isn’t there, if you have 10 units that’s not demand if it’s sold out that’s overclockers and co wanting it even if it was -50% lol

cursive summit
#

Well even if the few units sold out, there's still than old fashioned, dare I say "brainwashed" folk that always buys Intel no matter what

ashen spindle
#

Sure that’s always the case

cursive summit
#

I have a hard time figuring out under what circumstances you'd buy Intel not just out of being a fan of that company but of necessity, something AVX? Isn't in AVX Intel actually worse than AMD nowadays or something like that?

ashen spindle
#

Chipset/platform if you need connectivity

cursive summit
#

With connectivity, do you mean PCIe lanes?

#

I remember that being a bit of an issue to some users of Ryzen where they are somewhat pushed to buying Threadripper for that reason

ashen spindle
#

Thunderbolt ports, if you are limited by the chipset links etc.

cursive summit
#

Isn't USB4 effectively the same somewhat

#

Or did they push out TB5 yet with the 80gbps bandwidth, then there's I suppose a real advantage there

ashen spindle
#

Just the amount of ports and pcie lanes. Some camm2 boards so people going for mem speed would be a reason too

cursive summit
#

Oo, the legendary CAMM2

#

I heard so much good about it that I'm still wondering if it's replacing DDR

ashen spindle
#

It’s still ddr

cursive summit
#

Well, the conventional one

ashen spindle
#

Just not on dimms

cursive summit
#

Maybe by 2030, who knows

thick elk
#

SO-DIMM is probably the first to go, already losing ground and laptop manufacturers have an interest in having these modules be exchangeable.
Not for user upgrades, but because it makes it easier to have different sku's in assembly.

Servers probably not very keen on moving, as DIMM's are far better for density in a rack configuration and large amounts of memory.
That leaves the desktop, probably be a matter of price premium vs performance gain.

Could be that on the high-end it wins pretty fast but the lower end could remain on DIMMS for a long time.

My guess would be DDR7 would probably no longer use DIMMS on the desktop, with DDR6 being where it transitions.
If that's the case late 2020's early 2030's seams reasonable.

ashen spindle
#

server will keep it yes, I dont see DDR6 coming to desktop

#

theres a big chance after ddr5 we get lpddr6 on lpcamm modules

thick elk
#

I can see it happen in the sense that DDR6 DIMMS may be cheaper, and it could very well be that desktop architectures still support it.
As a budget option?

fair gull
#

i actually hope its all camm modules for ddr6

ashen spindle
#

it would be cheaper if laptops and desktop share the same so lpddr6 would lower costs for them since they also dont need to make a ddr6 memory controller for desktop then

cursive summit
#

I am still of the cope that HBM is the future

ashen spindle
#

its just entirely worse for desktop in any aspect

cursive summit
#

Vega was fairly good with HBM, pricing wasn't that bad either

ashen spindle
#

its not a cpu

cursive summit
#

And there's theoretical benefits there for productivity or something

ashen spindle
#

latency matters much more on cpu side than bandwidth

cursive summit
#

I suppose just due to the way HBM is constructed latency is pretty bad

#

Though the speed is pretty great

#

HBM I still see having its place on GPUs

thick elk
#

Apart from latency, HBM is not something you just slot in some module next to the cpu.

cursive summit
#

If they figure out the latency, HBM on an APU would be incredible

#

Strix Halo 40CUs, 16GB of HBM4 on a chip

#

I'd love that as a SoC

thick elk
#

You require tsv's or an interposer, is never going to be a cheap solution, when you go down that route you start competing with other things.

cursive summit
#

Wdym by license out, it's a JEDEC thing which is like, a massive initiative where AMD and such are part of

#

Idk the specifics but idk why they'd need to pay JEDEC for it and not just Micron or Samsung for making it

#

Or SK Hynix for that matter

#

Yes

ashen spindle
#

they arent going to figure the latency out more than ddr ram, its literally made as a tradeoff to have more bandwidth instead

cursive summit
#

I think Intel recently (year or two ago) did a combined solution of CPU + GPU + VRAM on a chip

#

It doesn't have to be physically on top of the CPU as just on the die

ashen spindle
#

what license are you talking about, hbm is literally deceloped by amd and then accepted by jedec

cursive summit
#

AMD made HBM? That's cool

#

Do they still make it? Or was it an invention from GloFo days

ashen spindle
#

they never made it it was made with sk hynix

cursive summit
#

Which is why when you said licencing I was very confused lol

#

It's a JEDEC standard which is why I was confused

#

Other than DDR and HBM I can't remember another memory standards

#

Maybe NAND? Cause Samsung privately designs them?

#

Anyways if you give me a solution of 8 CPU cores, 40CUs of capable graphics and 16-32GBs of HBM3/4 I'd be extremely happy with that kind of small size package

#

Intel recently did something like that I remember but I think those were canned

ashen spindle
#

xeon cpu mac with hbm yes

cursive summit
#

HBM3e is just as good at speed anyways

#

Great for crunching numbers, Vegas were insane at mining, and that was 2

thick elk
#

I do wonder if we will see hbm again on consumer gpu's.
Scale of production has gone up with the AI boom, would not be out of the realm of possibilities for them to return to the consumer space.

cursive summit
#

Well technically you can buy a rack of Nvidia H100s and that's an HBM3 solution innit?

#

It's consumer available, not consumer priced dogekek

#

HBM seems reserved for AI solutions as long as that "bubble" as Quin calls it persists

#

DDR seems satisfactory? Nvidia and AMD should just bump up those bus width numbers

#

Cheap HBM in the shape of H100s?

#

Idk how that's too cheap havo

#

Well I'm still interested in seeing this AI bubble crash

#

I for one kinda doubt it's a bubble

#

But meh we'll see

#

I see that as a narrow minded approach, it's creeping into everywhere by day

ashen spindle
#

its supply constrained market and HPC used hbm on h100/200 mi300 anyway so even a crash wouldnt make hbm available in cheaper

#

and it wouldnt cause a change to gpu roadmaps either

cursive summit
#

60% of videogame companies or something like that are already heavily affected by AI

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

even cheaper hbm wouldnt make it to consumer cards

cursive summit
#

But I am still interested in seeing where AI leads, I am hoping for a revolution rather than a bubble

The keys on the keyboard are determined by windows.

The keyboard send key number 64 is pressed. Windows than has a mapping from that key to an actual input.

That mapping can be configured in windows for every language.

switching from gnome to KDE after encountering a persistent multi-monitor bug

#

I'm not finding too many bugs with KDE this time around, it's really pleasant

thick elk
#

Which one? I have encountered, oh encountered in gnome, having a couple in kde I am too lazy to report / hard to pin down.

#

One where one of my screens stays black until it disconnects / reconnects itself Regression in 6.2, the other at work where. displays connected to the igp have a corrupted mouse cursor on non qt6 applications when switching between cursor types. That one I worked around by making the igp primary (gpu was just display out mostly)

#

Oh and plasma crashes still a thing.

smoky frigate
#

after an hour or two using multiple monitors in gnome, the right monitor freezes, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive. so I'm staring at a desktop I can't interact with, and nothing but cold rebooting works. running fsck and losing whatever I was doing at the time I have zero tolerance for. I like gnome, but I will ditch something faster than a hot potato when it takes my game progress with it 😛
not a single issue using a single monitor btw

thick elk
#

Hmm that seems like something that has to be config or system specific.

#

At least plasma safely restarts itself if the shell crashes

smoky frigate
#

it does not happen under KDE, so I don't know

thick elk
#

Could try on gnome with a new user / clean user directory?

#

Had some wild iszues on plasma with huge memory usage like that in the past.

smoky frigate
#

but it should be mentioned that the left monitor is a 360hz flat panel and the right a 20 year old CRT, so there is a huge delta

smoky frigate

this is not nvidia's fault, they have been recommending the open kernel modules for a few versions now. I stayed on the closed ones, because frametimes were better

smoky frigate

they were problematic for a long time tbf but the driver have gotten pretty good lately

I'm hard pressed to find problems tbh. the issues I have usually come from me thinking I know better, lol

I dunno mään, been running pretty good on wayland since version 555

#

they make a lot of progress really quickly after dragging their feet for several years

#

but tbf, so did wayland devs

#

what issues with current linux drivers are you thinking of?

#

honestly if I plug my still-supported vega 56 into the computer I have more issues, cause the linux driver can't do 360hz since kernel version 5.9

#

it could do it before, it can do it on windows, but not since then!

thick elk
#

Do you still have issues running mesa at the same time as nvidia? as in monitors on gpu + other ones on igp. Does overclocking / fan controll finally work without a silly xorg dependency?

#

Some things besides. broken wayland I encountered in the past.

smoky frigate
#

I haven't found something that does fan curves yet, but you can set them fixed in nvidia-settings

thick elk
#

Which as far as I understand is still tied to xorg.

smoky frigate
#

I tested it, it works under wayland

#

but you have to use the terminal program

thick elk
#

Okay, they have definitely improved over the last year and a half.

ashen spindle

get the flawless widescreen app, that removes the black bars and fps limit

#

and no

#

well, it can run it but not at any good framerate

tight scaffold
#

Ye I saw some comparison and rt doesn’t make any difference only makes some darker places more dark so ima run ultra no rt

#

And with the app I can’t play online I like online cause of the messages

hasty thunder
#

tbf, you're going with a resolution that keeps the height at the same pixel amount while the horizontal amount of pixels increases. Ofc it introduces black bars

ashen spindle
#

no elden ring puts two black boxes on the side to keep the resolution 16:9

#

yeah if you want to keep online play you can use it so you have to decide what you prefer

tight scaffold

Yes 3440 has black back but 2560 doesn’t but stretched to non shooter games hurts

hasty thunder

well, 2560x1440 is a perfect 16:9 ratio

So I bought a mouse which is set to 500Hz polling rate by default, out of the box, and can be set to 1k in software. The software is a Zip. I downloaded it without extracting anything and threw it in https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload to check for viruses. From what I see it should be a safe download but I'd like a second opinion.
I don't know if I can send Zips here so I'll send a link to the website with the scan analisys:

Someone needed an option to buy in bulk for cheap

#

Just assist me with my initial question if you have any imput to share

cedar fog
#

Just some random Chinese brand

stark prawn
stark prawn
# cedar fog

They returned the old reply system as “forward”?? 🤣

cedar fog
#

no it's just cooler looking

jaunty marsh
#

What is it flagging

#

As it is probably an unsigned driver

stark prawn
stark prawn
#

You can see all scans

jaunty marsh
#

Uh try opening it please

#

If it comes up with a warning

#

Then don’t proceed

stark prawn
#

ofc ofc

cedar fog
#

Its not flagging

jaunty marsh
#

Then why bother

cedar fog
#

0/68

jaunty marsh
#

Omg why bother

stark prawn
#

These are the mice I’ve tried so far but this is the only one that had some red checks in “Relations”

Mice:

  • Microsoft Silent BT
  • Logitech MX Master 3S
  • Logitech G203 Prodigy (discontinued)
  • Logitech G Pro Wireless (x2)
  • XUNFOX H8
  • VXE R1 Pro Max
  • Attack Shark X5
  • Attack Shark R1
  • Keychron M3 Mini
  • Longbao LB-M1 Pro

When it’s zero out of 68

stark prawn
jaunty marsh
#

Oh 💀

#

My bad didn’t see that

#

Download dbg64

stark prawn
# cedar fog Its not flagging

then i guess that's just what the software uses to track the movement?
I don't know, I never deep dived on Mice software because I rarely use it

jaunty marsh
#

And delete it

cedar fog
#

Yeah but having a singular flag is not a big deal

jaunty marsh
cedar fog
#

especially from the lesser known anti viruses

jaunty marsh
#

It’s virus total 😭

stark prawn
jaunty marsh
#

Yeah that

stark prawn
#

have you?

jaunty marsh
#

yeah i use it to crack stuff

#

tho i dont condone it just if admins look

#

try use it on the web driver then you can delete the keylogger

stark prawn
jaunty marsh
#

stay safe mate

#

do it in a virtual machine

#

oh and if you dont understand codee

#

dont bother

stark prawn
#

Guess I'll make a new one for Win10

cedar fog
#

virus total constantly has false positives

jaunty marsh
#

rather safe than sorry

cedar fog
#

having a singular av flag isn't a big deal in the first place

jaunty marsh
#

i use it often and i aint ever seen that

stark prawn
stark prawn
shadow minnow
#

Any thoughts on Epiphone Les Paul standard?

cedar fog
#

reanalyzed the file

#

doesn't show up as flagged anymore

#

it was just a false positive

stark prawn
#

you're rehecked?

#

How could it be fixed in a matter of minutes?

cedar fog
#

last scan for that particular file was 3 months ago

#

virus total just stores file hashes in a database

#

anti virus providers usually get updated etc

stark prawn
#

yoo right

#

it's not LIVE

jaunty marsh
#

I just ain’t ever seen keylogger

cedar fog
#

the more worrying flag is the .lnk

#

so still

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

stark prawn
#

Actually this:
But going in relations immediatelly finds 2 files

cedar fog
#

yeah the 2 relation flags are .lnk

stark prawn
wild coyote
stark prawn
wild coyote
#

Send the link to me

#

the virus total one

stark prawn
wild coyote
#

That's a zip file

stark prawn
#

That's the link for the first scan

wild coyote
#

That doesn't help

stark prawn
#

Yes, it's a ZIp

wild coyote
#

A zip file scan is useless, as it only archives files and nothing more

#

but I shall check anyways whatever I can

stark prawn
#

Should I have "extract all" then bundle them in for scans instead?

#

as that doesn't run anything only pulls them out

wild coyote
#

Nah, just lemme deal with the ones I've been provided

stark prawn
#

ight

cedar fog
#

i mean i just downloaded it to my pc

stark prawn
#

and?

#

the software inside the zip

cedar fog
#

it seems fine the only flag is a .lnk file which is used to run the uninstaller from the start menu folder

stark prawn
cedar fog
#

just runs the uninstaller ;p

#

just a false positive

stark prawn
#

I remember Windows marking Ubisoft's Ubi Play app when I tried to install Rainbow 6 xD

#

They warned me "yo this is a suspicious program, watch out"

stark prawn
cedar fog
#

no flags

#

the one flag for

#

is just another mouse from the brand

#

safe to assume they use the same software

#

hence same flags

#

and it reanalyzes as zero flags

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

stark prawn
#

I've just reanalyzed them

cedar fog
#

yeah like i said from the get-go

#

usually can ignore virus total for only a few flags

#

especially if its not big av providers

#

it even uninstalls better than some other programs

#

10/10

stark prawn
#

Nice. Ok, thanks for the help guys

stark prawn
umbral heron
#

More info > Run Anyway

stark prawn
cedar fog
#

I always hit more info run anyway

#

get that shit all the time

#

I think defender has like their own list of applications

#

and they check to see how many people use it etc

umbral heron
#

Heuristic analysis, yup nod

stark prawn
#

then I'm throwing the programme out

little silo
#

What mouse and software?

umbral heron
#

I like how Wooting and several other companies started trend on web-based configuration software duck_bopping

balmy vector
#

It’s good for everyoneduck_bopping

stark prawn
cedar fog
#

it's sad that some of them aren't fully functional

#

without software running constantly
