astral haven

ashen spindle
#

yes I want to use mpv as a player

#

https://github.com/peldas/mpv-sub-scripts basically this script that someone found does what I want, have the video player skip to the next subttile the moment none is currently displayed, so I can play a video and people never stop talking essentially, without manually reencoding it

GitHub

Two mpv scripts for automatically pausing after each subtitle line and skipping intervals between subtitles, with included blacklist - peldas/mpv-sub-scripts

umbral heron
#

Oooh, I see
They don't work with Windows version of mpv? Playing video through VM without GPU passthrough may be miserable hanaSad

ashen spindle
#

oh the video itself works fine if I just play it without the script

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

I want it in a VM so its contained if I download something bad and cba using windows in a VM

#

for just playing the video the virtualbox works without issue

#

so I have currently two issues, one is the virtualbox shitting itself when I close it and want to open it, but I ontice I put it into the virtualbox folder which needs admin perms so that might be fucky and I put it into a different path now

#

and that the script doesnt work for me but for someone else, which I suspect that the mp4 file just doesnt have the subtitles saved in a way that mpv can interact with them

astral haven
#

ctrl right arrow should manually skip to subtitle if mpv can read them

ashen spindle
#

pressing v should also hide/show them but it doesnt hide them for me that's why I suspect it cant read them

astral haven
#

rip

ashen spindle
#

so for now I'm checking if I can find the episodes in a different container

astral haven
#

burned in subs :/

ashen spindle

I'm already spending too much time on this I dont want to manually do that all the time lol

astral haven
#

well ive got a vmware license so ill be fine

#

but this sandbox stuff is real slick

ashen spindle

so got an mkv file and the subtitles can be toggled so that was definitely the issue but now I can trigger the script so next troubleshooting zzz

marsh pewter
ashen spindle
#

true, I would gladly turn american for that

marsh pewter
ashen spindle
#

okay using a filepath outside the virtualbox install folder seemed to work for the vm to not shit itself upong opening it again and using an mkv file seems to work, the script isnt quite working yet but I can fix that somehow if I know it worked for someone and mpv can read subs now

ashen spindle

Yeah but the DiY market could vanish overnight and neither Intel nor amd would care from a sales point

It also seems for zen5 an additional stepping was needed for the x3d SKUs so they literally had to wait before they could get dies that can be used as a base

plucky tapir

plucky tapir

There are better alternatives. Better in every way.

#

Look at the indoor scenes in Alan wake2 and you see where it’s a good option that you can’t do otherwise

Because it’s such a dim environment the closest you could come would be static light being baked in but then you have non accurate shadows when things move or the day cycle goes on

late grove
# steady sail Cp77 is the only game where i can understand the Ray Traycing

Everything that Cyberpunk did with RT can be done with raster at fraction of the peformance cost. They just chose not to do it. Same goes for every other game with RT. With some of the worst examples being Control where they straight up do not use SSR or basic cubemaps on highly reflective surfaces that then gets "fixed" with RT.

steady sail
#

for me control looked better without RT than with RT havo

final flame
#

I mean, a lot of things can be pointed to the lazy developer argument
the amount of games that are just ungodly unoptimized and are unplayable without moderately good hardware as the minimum

I would say lighting is the least of our concerns

umbral heron
#

There is
Smear the screen with Vaseline SilvervaleCool

late grove
#

There are multiple "cheats".
For RT reflections you can use camera reflections (or planar reflections as they are also called). By putting a camera into the reflection surface that then renders what it sees. This tech has been used since late 90s.
For RT shadows you have stencil shadows, most famous for appearing in Doom 3 and FEAR. They scale with any resolution and can realistically be put on every object from every dynamic lightsource with negligible performance impact on today's hardware.
For RT AO, you can pre-bake all of that and only update it when necessary.

umbral heron
late grove

RT reflections in 1999 woooo

It amazes me how you are just at the peak of the dunning-Kruger curve constantly without even considering there’s something you might not know

late grove
#

It amazes me that you still bother replying to me.

final flame
#

it always falls down to money, and the only way to stop this from happening is to stop buying games that are like this
which thankfully we're starting to see this happen

late grove
#

Why not? You expect it to be less demanding than ray tracing?

#

Maybe if you put it on every shard of glass and every raindrop then sure. But that obviously won't be necessary.

ashen spindle
#

They scale with any resolution and can realistically be put on every object from every dynamic lightsource with negligible performance impact on today's hardware.

Have you considered taking over as epic‘s lead graphics programmer since none of them seem to know about this solution with 0 issues

# fickle ore all of those are solved

uh... i don't think click latency is solved these days, because the GPX2 comes at a 180 ms click latency while every other high end mouse gets way below 150

ashen spindle
ashen spindle

neither are pre- and post travel solved, because there are a couple of new mice which have none at all, making the buttons not very spammable

ashen spindle

at this point it's not a great idea to go on a ddr4 platform anymore unless you are REALLY budget constraint if you want to keep performance up for newer titles
