My first AMD CPU was Ryzen 3900X.
I'm not decided on what I want for my 2025 build but it might be AMD again. I'd love a X3D CPU.
So... quite a big mistake.
I got the 5950X which was... A big fat mistake too. Should have gone for the 5800X for basically the same performance.
first pc period was an og pentium
Better wait till 2026. We are in a stagnation era right now.
Either upgrade right now or wait till 2026. There won't be anything good for a while.
My first CPU was a 133mhz Intel 😅
am gonna max out this AM4 rig I have withnin a year or two then ride it out until like 2035 or something
100mhz for me
I like my CPU
For work - all 16 cores work with VMs
For gaming - just disable CCU1 and essentially have 7800X3D

I don't have a gaming PC at all anymore. So I'm not gonna wait for over a year without one. Early 2025 is when I'll have money for a new one and that's when I'll get one. I am unsure if I should wait for 9800X3D or just get 7800X3D though. Idk how late into the year the 9800X3D will release.
I'm not a big gamer these days, I basically only play with friends on occasion
Honestly I can also sit on my 10900K till the end of time.
But I have need to complete the dream so I will be very irresponsible with my money in about 2 years.
It was a Packard Bell pre-built, idk if that company still even exists
ours was built by a local pc hardware dealer that actually still exists
Sucks.
I suppose you could then hunt for dirt cheap used deals.
I bought from them the other day
I absolutely do not need a 9800X3D to hit the performance targets I have... So I might just go for a used 7800X3D.
9800X3D will be 5% faster than 7800X3D
we dont know that yet
If you get one - these are really popular
Well I do.
no you dont
🤨
the product is not out and does not physically exist yet in any sort of stage pat maybe engineering samples
I expect like ~10% more on 9800X3D, seems reasonable
10% best case
you can make expectations but they can be both exceeded or not be met
I'll probably smack a 5950x or one of the X3D ones that fits AM4 into this thing in a year or two
but you do NOT know it
or sooner, if I find some spicy deals
That's my guess, AMD would want to dethrone 7800X3D with their new CPU, more money
Will 9800X3D be the same socket as 7800X3D?
yes
Yeah, AM5
9000x non 3d cpus also use am5
Man AM4 was such a good socket. Literally flawless (after fixes). Kinda wish I was on one right now.
AMD wants to sit on AM5 until 2027, so I think we can expect Zen 6 on AM5 too
Sounds like a you problem.
as a socket it was not great, platform perhaps but thats not the socket
yeah I prefer LGA in that regard, but I do appreciate that AMD doesn't change sockets like intel changes its pair of pants i.e. every goddamn generation
yea personally i far prefer lga, less risk too
You people have monkey hands that you cannot handle PGA sockets?
Surprisingly enough Intel sticks to LGA1700 for 2 gens now
are monkeys known for having shaky hands or something
I've had to bent so many pins back after the AMD cpu coolers have pulled the CPU up with it.
its just a worse design, LGA is much less risk of damaging things regardless if you're clumsy or not
14th gen is not a real gen. They just had to stick to the formula because.. big corporation cannot step out of line even if their life depends on it.
When I got a new CPU cooler for my 5950X the moment I pulled the old one off I didn't see any CPU in the socket for a second.
LGA1700 has alder lake and raptor lake thats 2 gens even ignoring 14th gen...
Sry misread that. But Intel always stuck to 2 gens. So why mention it?
And pretty sure they have used LGA for over a decade now.
Did Intel ever use PGA?
yes
So yeah
Slot 1
wanna see some tech gore ?
am4 chip got stock to the cooler and my friend tried to get it of from the cooler

Hi Akko
I used to have a photo of a 7th gen Intel where the corner of the CPU substrate had been bent almost 45" by the cooler.
hi Calslock
VPN blocker. Lame
Imagine if we had CPU mounted like GPUs
good ol pentium 2 cartridge mounts
Like in the good old days.
yippe my monitor and arms just had been handed to the delivery company
We should get delidded CPUs by default. That's for sure.
that sorta was pentium 2 but not quite
Ah, Pentium II/III
The amount of cooling we lose due to IHS is insane.
our 1998 ibm aptiva had one of those cartridge PII's
mh yes lets go back to direct die so 50% of cpus crack from falsely mounted coolers
the tiny ass fan it had made a horrendous noise after a few years
My auntie had PIII in her PC, great nugget that was
I think she still has it somewhere in the attic
my aunt had our first og pentium can sitting at her place for so many years, eventually scrapped it, I wish I had asked if I could have it again in time
that thing had the first gen 3dfx monster voodoo in it
I hate how we can't have nice things due to people's incompetence.
Even KS CPUs do not come delidded despite there not being a single cooler that can cool those.
tbh it just sat unused in her pretty tiny flat for years so I get why she eventually threw it away
still hurts tho
IHS are a nice thing for 99% of users
most people in fact do not want to direct die cool their cpu
Yeah, that was a good piece of history
Stick some paste, stick cooler, done
it was
our pentium 2 with tnt2/voodoo2 cards met a similar fate
like 10-15 years ago we didn't look at it as future vintage, it was obsolete crap
If we got direct-die CPUs would the performance actually be much better for people with regular cooling who doesn't overclock?
By performance I mean fps.
for gaming much less than something like rendering
Same
most of the heat comes from fully multithreaded workloads which gaming rarely hits
I don't like the idea of CPUs being vulnerable by default. Especially for casuals like me.
so it would need to be a situation where the cores get hit hard enough in a cpu bound scenario that more cooling would actually allow higher clocks for it to be any benefit
Does anyone know if the gpx2 should have a left mouse button?
Okay great cause I got worried for a second haha
cause I just got mine and it has top and right mouse button but no left mouse button
thought it was a defect for a second
so on something like a 14900ks perhaps due to heat density but at most you would get some games getting a tiny fps boost with direct die
in all seriousness yes it should have a LMB
😂
wait wdym it has no left mouse button

will watch soon ty for quick link
no thats called explaining not defending
he said hes not upset with the price
The phrasing could be improved to appear more neutral.
and that in a few years all consoles will cost this much
I mean all consoles are loss leaders Lana
"i cant control what people spend their paychecks on" doesnt seem like a defense to me
they bet on people buying services and games to make their revenue back
So glad I got out of consoles in Gen 6.
People are mad about the new PS5 pro cuz there's no disk to put in and what not
A fully digital console with a little improvement for 700usd
oh it's going fully digital? F to disks
also in general it makes sense to fully watch a video before claiming what the content says..
no for 80$ not 150
And if it will be available
Sony are scumbags when it comes to this, try for example getting nowadays stick module for Dualsense Edge, it's always out of stock, and once they release tiny batch, everything is bought out by scalpers
he still says the price is not a problem
ffs is it so hard to just use accurate numbers
Linus knows full well how much power a thumbnail and title has.
So... not valid imo 😄
$80/120€
more talking about lana not ltt in general
yeah neither is 150dollars
like the price is bad no need to randomly say its 30% more

it doesnt help complaining about the price if you then use numbers that are off by almost 50%
for the hardware specs the price isn't horrible but its pretty darn underwhelming given the tiny selection of ps5 exclusives
What are the actual differences?
and the pretty small differences in real world quality improvements
for people that alreadt have a pc yes, it's mostly for people who want a gaming option that just work but dont want a pre built at this price
They claim it can run the Graphics preset at the performance preset speeds
I mean, when consoles are this locked down there's not much benefit to extra performance unless the title you're playing has upgrades designed for the pro or performance issues with non pro consoles
60FPS medium settings yey
about 45% faster gpu and much faster Raytracing is the difference in hardware and better upscaling
you're paying a lot for performance improvements you can't use all that much
that is better than 30fps medium at least
fair
ps5 games can look great but I just couldt get myself to play at quality it was a pain to have 30fps
I get really nauseous when playing on console if the game doesnt let me disable the motion blur
I had to quit playing Resi Evil Village on my sisters PS5 after likd 30 minutes cause motion blur cant be disabled :/
A yes. A backplate that you will literally never see 😄
too much crap tacked on to motherboards these days
Backplate? What da hell
they just wanna charge more moneys
Nice io though
yeah that's a lot
but that IO 👀
the clear cmos button is dangerously close to the others lol, i hope its hard to press
I mean, it does protect the board from shorting against the case or something else
won't be a issue if you have a nice case and cable manage properly though
it has no LMB
yeah in all my time building and using computers I've never heard of this happening tbh
afaik on most boards you have to hold it for 5 seconds
all mouses have a lmb...
ah okay then its fine
tbh I don't even use the left and right mouse buttons lmfao
Well this one clearly doesn't
are we talking about the same buttons?
you'd probably have to physically damage the board for it to be a risk
generally because cases are well, designed properly
I hope so
chip away protective coating and such where it can leech current
the lmb is the main thing you use to click
OH I KNOW what your talking about
no no not that one
mouse scroll button i mean lol
left mouse scroll button
SCROLL
it technically can short out if someone installs their standoffs wrong though
or a screw is loose
yeah mb I shouldve mentioned that
You mean when you press the scroll wheel?
those are more common things that can happen
oh yeah no there is no left scroll button
you can click down on the mouse wheel for m3
but not left or right
yeah my bad lol
no worries haha i thought you meant the clicker at first 😂
you good again no worries haha
haha big brain fart of mine lol
it happens youre good lol, i was trying to help my friend yesterday and i completely forgot the words serial number
hahaha happens to the best of us 🙂
I estimate between 1200 and 1500 EUR based on what the previous Godlike boards costed.
Intel version will probably be even more ridiculous. Very excited to see that one.
What do you get from uber expensive motherboards?
high end boards generally have more layers which can lead to better memory speeds, you can extra support for extreme overclocking, you might get more expensive pcie bifurication so you have more options how to use the lanes you have from cpu and chipset
more slots for everything basically and higher speed ram support, error lights, integrated wifi/bluetooth etc.
but with high end mobos the extra features arent really necessary for 90% of pc builders
most of the costs comes from them being limited quantity of higher cost components that just add extras on top
Bragging rights.
oh I didnt notice people were talking about 1k eur mobos 😅 yeah those are probably for like studio machines or generally for stuff that require a lot of gadgets plugged in to the pc
There are expensive server and workstation boards. But there are also uber expensive consumer boards and no they don't have anything that can justify their price.
Even features like 10 gig lan can be bought seperately with add in cards and the total cost will still be less.
I get stupidly overkill expensive boards because I like how they look. And even then I get them on insane deals only (so far anyway).
convenience of not needing to do that is one of the reasons (that you can assume)
but that's usual with literally any product/service
im fine with my cheap af b450 mobo
I'm (not) fine with my overpriced budget B550.
How much was it?
I don't recall - Didn't pay. But B550 was/is just overpriced at the start of the year.
Ah i see
i bought my b450 board for 93 euro in 2020
The cheap Asrock board someone here recommended seems perfect for me.
But I'm curious about one thing. The GPU slot says PCIE 4. New GPUs seem to be PCIE 5. Is this bad?
I got into PC gaming when I was really young glad I did. PC gaming is so much more fun!!
X870E?
yes
Nice I LOVE the IO
i mean im runing on pci-e 3.0x16 and my gpu support 4.0
Theres a good chance that if they are pcie5 you dont need that outside of like AI stuff which hammers the bandwidth
you can run a 4090 on pcie3x16 for like 1% performance loss on average
at 4k
i honestly expected 1.1 and 2.0 to be much worse than that
Apple’s new features have to be targeted towards photographers
yeah
Ah okay so the motherboard being 4.0 is no issue. Good to know.
By the way where did you find this?

Whats the fastest way to import and delete photos from an iphone via pc?
Icloud limits the amount which is dumb.
with the included cable ?
then good luck 🤷
Not move 100 photos at a time.
Hence iOS is garbage.
What kind of junk phone requires a subscription for it to function like an android.
I just ignore the icloud
Couldn't get me to daily a phone that discourages me from pirating all my apps and mp3s.
open network share on your pc, connect the files app to the pc via ip and move them all
That was the carbon you sent right?
Why cant they just allow media access via the lightning cable that disconnects every 3 minutes.
idk I barely have any pictures so I dont quite care
How do I take pictures of images on protected apps on iOS
you dont
Thats stupid.
that was the godlike mobo
do you need screenshots from your banking apps?
Usually
And also stealing memes off facebook.
And videos.
And instagram
Tik tok
pretty sure those apps except banking allows screenshots, can just take a screenshot from the computer if you need to
Ios doesnt let me download videos straight from the yeetube on iOS
Or any other app for mp4 downloads.
But ye
I switch between phones for that stuff.
Cuz people want confirmation.
confirmation... of your bank account?
Zelle xfers
I believe RTX 3090 had the same 2% or so scaling going from pcie 3 to 4. So it's not a given that a 5090 will scale further with it. Maybe pcie bus will never become a bottleneck.
There are several apps which do not allow Screenshots. Banking Apps have an option to allow Screenshots, but Netflix, Amazon Prime and other apps for streaming services usually don't allow Screenshots and especially no screen recording
yeah
How do I get a free keyboard
not at all
Maybe during an office clean up.
Thank you
In the trash
Yeah more or less.
Thank you
Is this good? Better than the Beast Sword X?
You welcome.
i dont know dude
Hey, one time I got a logitech pro that someone threw in the electronics trash, it worked perfectly.
i dont own any beast x mouse
Why would they not allow screen recording on Video apps.
Thats how to properly pirate a new anime and put it on a streaming site xP
You could be smart and record it anyway using a capture card
Here's the thing though.
I don't want to pay for more stuff
a cheap USB capture card costs 20€/$
I just want to download all the junk from my work phone, then sell it.
I love mailsprings tracking if people open emails...
hello I have a question, can I mix two different HE switches for my wooting? planning to put jades on WASD only
works so well when emailing govs

HOWEVER
I never really understand the need to know if people read your stuff or not. Via text message
In v5 Wootility there will be an option to choose the switches you are using, if you chose Lekker then the wasd may be ever so slighty out of range potentially, but Jades shouldn't have an issue as they are approved by us.
with a move like this you are breaking any contract terms, which leads to you getting fired
on the spot
Thank you for the info!
Not like the company wants anything to do with collecting the phones.
Its already off service.
It's their property either way
I dare them to then lmao.
Its like the time we threw all the old pcs into the river.
And gallons of used oil lol.
And by gallons i mean a few thousand.
you have to prove your told them you have it, and they need to come get it with 30 days notice
then its abandoned
in the us
Install the bad amd driver that made you crash, return yours cuz "it glitchy" get an exchange pay the difference profit 🧠
That'd be shady but
Doable
pay the difference for almost no upside, seems bad
Isnt strix better batte try life wise
new laptop prices vs old gen is massive
Didn't notice the from
hes not goin on 20 hour flights so battery doesnt really matter
Watch as it crawls across the floor by itself.
what if it bites me 😦
if it bites you it turns you into another keyboard
You turn into a 60% Dashi
looks like something gamer branded from aliexpress
That's awful
Holy shit
That's a big bite if i can take 40% off me on the spot
Thought i'd be a TLK or a 77.5%
looks AI generated
a sentient UwU
Well, my UwUs aren't sentient and know when to open Spotify or to shut down my PC
just replace the u keys with o
I love simple apps like this
they do one thing and do it well, like make dynamic wallpaper bundles
so now the wallpaper changes when I toggle light and dark theme, cause I found nice wallpaper with a night and daytime version
hey can anyone recommend a good wooting keyboard? for a low price, because ive seem the price of the 80he and i almost fainted
All of them are good, just pick the layout you want
it would be good for shortcuts
I feel like the 60HE was worth the money, but I had to make some compromises
can confirm its great for media controls
im really low rn but im plannig on buying a scyrox v8 as a mouse and a wooting
idk which wooting though
60he it is then?
do you use arrow and F keys a lot?
i use 100% keyboards, but thats because theyre the cheapest from my experience
i have an apex steelseries one ☹️

Fsr3 support
like, do you have one app where you need to use the arrow keys and other buttons at the same time. if yes, it'd be best to avoid the 60HE. I haven't really touched my DAW in a year because of ti
idk man, i just play games and do some tech related things some times
i dont use shortcuts so maybe the 100% isnt even my thing
furthest i can go is ctrl alt supr
then the 60HE could be enough for you
alright
i'll get it when i have money 😭
There, that takes you to the config link to pick what you want on the 60HE
i need the scyrox mouse this week because my logitech's cable is awful
thank you
Get the G305 mouse, its cheaper and just as good most likely
ive seen everywhere that for the price, the scyrox v8 is incredibly good
Fair, I dont want to start yet another multiple hour debate about mice 😅
Everytime mice or headphones are brought up, it happens
haha its fine
Im just gonna try and snatch a sora v2 when its available
i have no idea at all i just see recommendations
What does the Scyrox mean by "3 mode"?
and wtf does "web page driven" mean???? XD
multi-terminal synchronization
sounds like some shit a hacker in a movie would say to sound smart
you know how the wallpaper engine has some wallpapers using websites?
so i think thats the driver
yeah... why tf does a mouse meed access to a web page?
Oh, they mean web app to configure it?
yes probably
i haven't seen videos on it
and the mode thing might just mean that you can turn on different modes for different things
The translation is horrendous
like the competitive mode it advertises
it probably has better response but consumes slightly more battery
I approve of the idea though
TBH I cant figure out wtf this is meant to mean
i camt see it
PTM7950
its blurry
Where?
what does it say?
PTM7950 where to buy 😭
amazon
It means they are not selling preorders but only once it's in stock and ready to ship
oh, thats good
ES?
yes
Extremely following hands
ah, there we are, that did mean its configred with a website :D
Hopefully it arrives tomorrow
nice, where will you put it
Scenter.
So... it smells?
LOL
I did add thermal paste but idk maybe the screws are screwed or pipes are vent
woah then thats good as hell no?
yeah, it can be good, means it can work on any OS
no need of installing any program?
yep
Hyori just discovered chinglish advertising
no, this is just the most poorly translated one ive seen in ages
fr
I've seen a lot worse
😅 oh my
Btw they don't say if its the 7950 aka the one that melts
I've posted this one before but its worth a re-read

any wireless pc headphones with an app for customization?
i have a pair of sony ones but the app is only for mobile devices
why yes I like to trigger fast, off to mastodon I go
The only customisation you should need for headphones is EQ, which you can use EquialiserAPO or similar for
Sennheiser had good cheap ones but they doubled the price since i asked for refund and ended up getting a new pair for free after a year, did pay shipping twice cause I didn't know return to amazon to get amazon edition was a scam and they would only give a small amount of money
triggers so fast you'd think its dysfunctional
i was exactly thinking about sennheiser right now
pc38x
So Sennheiser only had their original version which costs 30% more and I fot a upgrade for free
But they are tighter on my big head

are they comfy?
they have both profiles right
like audio and microphone?
The amazon ones weren't has tight but i heard of ppl who decided to stretch the normal one with books
ive seen the pc38x around but theres only a yellow version and it looks like you were the lemon guy from adventure time
The price did skyrocket so wait till goes down if u go for those
Nah
I got hd 599 white

white??
damn
Good enough
Had amazon version
dont they get dirty
Free upgrade after more than a uear

Nah bro
They aren't rubber
i have a pair of sony wh1000mx4 but whenever i use them i also need a separate microphone
Mine too
also are they wireless
But I have a hyperx microphone
oh they dont have a microphone?? damn
Tbh any microphone is better than a headset microphone
i know but its more comfy
i need a microphone tho
lat one broke it was a cheap one from amazon
U can hear me talking to the microwave 2 meters away
damn
have you seen the logitech mic
talking to the microwave
????
that looks like a nut
I got the round cheap hyperx like 4-5 years ago
Works better than when I bought it
I myself have razer headsets with a pretty nice mic quality
i used to have razer peripherals but i threw all of them away
they last a lot but i didnt like them
plus the apps for keyboards and things is
horrible
The stabilizer that came with the arm for few bucks does not fit my thicc microphone tho
I have IEMs, but I need a mic
and I won't be using my damn webcam mic just to talk to people
Indeed iem’s ftw
i do not buy webcams
i want a cheap one for the funny mic
I do, cuz I'm talking to friends n shit
but equalizerapo can do that
does it sound funny
Me with my cheap auna b900 mic
if I had some sort of phone stand and a proper long charging cable, I could just use my phone as the webcam
HyperX mic aren't bad
I want that NT-USB mini mic
that is NOT cheap
I mean its a quality product soo
right
Imo i wanna get a new mic as well bc mine picks up every little sound so nt-usb with a arm is the way
the first thing i need before buying any peripherals is a pc
im on a shitty asus laptop they paint as "gaming laptop" for marketing
i already got the parts i want for a pc to make in a near future but its expensive as hell
its going to be worth it though
Good luck soldier
My friends have all been begging me to get a new mic
My 8 year old blue yeti has been dying for such a long time
It sounds so ass
I I have Astro a40 tr, comes with mic , and works great
this one the one that "says" ptm7950 on the title but is like 35€ and 0 rating
just buy from lttstore?
Don't use thermal pads. Get proper paste.
what are you planning on cooling?
Yeah thermal paste is tried and tested
pads are typically used to cool stuff like memory chips but even then I'd use putty instead, less hassle and lasts longer
ptm7950 does tend to reliably outbenchmark less janky thermal pastes
it is actually a paste, it just comes as applicator sheets, and is a solid when cooled below room temperature and becomes more liquid the hotter it gets
and most of them
plus my pipe provably bent so fk
idk temps were cool but lil later boom temps up
maybe its the fans since this laptop fans design is motherfkr
the ptm stuff isn't a pad it does melt and basically is a paste then
and you put it on dont have to have people argue about how much to apply lol
I thought GN settled that 6 years ago
you think facts stop people from arguing?
And is the random ass one they linked further up "ptm stuff" ?
Don't jump into the jungle. Just buy any old paste and call it a day. No gamble.
oh I didnt see if anyone linked one I just saw lttstore/ptm mentioned and thought it was about that
Hisense showcased a 136-inch & a 163-inch MicroLED TV at #ifa2024, quoted to have an ultra-high refresh rate of 7680Hz, although this likely refers to the PWM frequency of the pixels.
When they putting that in monitor form at a price under $2000
Best we can do is a 163 inch monitor.
parents just bought a 55" miniled tv with 144hz
not sure what they need that for because they never game
Does Lossless Scaling work with videos?
I'd love to watch movies in 60 fps.
I wouldn't, looks all wrong
honestly it makes a lot of movies look worse
amd had that as fluid motion video like a decade ago
I disagree.
anyone remember 2014
it works for some not at all for others
24 feels and looks like motion blur, duplicated images and just headaches and eye strain.
real
same up video upscaling, works for some movies better than others
24fps on an OLED is the true defintion of eye cancer.
Yes. Terrible on CRTs too.
so in the end its a combination of what you watch, what you use to upscale/interpolate and what you personally prefer
It's bad on everything really.
high refresh rate has ruined our youth smh
Can't believe 24 FPS movie standard is still around to this day.
'it looks cinematic' and '60 fps looks wrong memes' is part of why.
People aren't used to 60 fps movies I get it.
Delusional freaks.
higher frame rate makes everything look more real and makes it super easy to notice cgi and movie props
But it would be so much better if people did get used to it.
which ruins the vibe on fantasy/scifi movies completely
I bet ya'll would watch movies in 2x speed too if you could
No that is true brainrot.
We want better clarity. Not worse..
But if you watch it at 2x speed at least you get 48 fps.
needs subway surfers on bottom half of screen too
and asmongold reacts in another
Kinda sad I missed 48 FPS avatar movie.
Hopefully it will maintain the tradition of rerunning for a decade like the original.
its not about getting used to, it's a preference
I've seen higher framerate video for most of my life, believe it or not
it still looks bad for movies imo
and a lot of people prefer lower framerate because it makes everything look more movie-like and cinematic instead of just an obvious movie scene
I want high refresh rate when I game, but that's about it
unlike video games you dont always want a clearer image for videos and the fact that people often dislike it is not only because they are used to it
the fact its on 24 instead of 25 or something yes thats because 24 was found to be the miniumum without exploding costs
but 60 to 120 can be very jarring to people and that was shown in the movies made in 12 that people didnt like for multiple reasons
yeah I dunno it just breaks the immersion to me, cheapens the whole thing
could it mean film tech would need to be updated and then have better framerates and a better image that isn't jarring? sure but idk if there has been research into it and twitter arguments arent going to convince me
Does this look bad to you?

The blue planet reflects clear rays far off, as if a giant eyeball staring at us from the distance.
The blue feels intimate and familiar, so familiar that one would almost develop fear upon seeing it.
The planet is going to embrace its destiny, which shall be determined by humanity, not Honkai.

its anime so yes
cartoons are a completely different subject
seriously though, this is a cartoon, and a video game
Animated movies are also made at 24 fps.
A native high refresh rate movie:

It looks much better at 60 than 30 or 24.

you good?
my cat jumped on my keyboard
(though the movie is mid and doesn't have any interesting visuals anyway)
wasnt that the movie made in 120?
Yes.
not gonna say it looks bad but it still looks a bit off to me
Sadly there's no 120 fps release of it to see.
like its made for tv rather than the cinema
it looks unnatural and wrong
especially when something is moving fast
my brain connects high framerate video with things like home video recordings or live news footage or something
I want to say it does look a bit odd but I watched it with that in mind so idk if it's just my brain doing what I think it should do
And that's what I mean by getting used to it. If high framerate movies got normalised I think everybody would go 'jesus christ I can't believe I defended 24 fps before'.
I dunno, you can enjoy both for different reasons or contexts 🤷🏻♂️
idk if thats true
its easier to make realistic looking scenes with lower fps
I watch like almost 0 movie content and this looks odd
if I was looking for certain details in a video I'd prefer as high resolution and many frames as possible, but I don't watch movies with a forensic mindset
Please set the playback video quality to "HD" (either 1080p48 or 720p48 on supported browsers) to watch the high frame rate version of the clip.
The example shows the effect of different frame rates, comparing 24 fps and 48 fps directly side-by-side: while 24 fps results in the softer, slightly blurry cinematic look, 48 fps results in a more cr...
look how weird the flicking looks at higher fps
yeah am not a fan
and its way easier to notice someone is holding a camera and turning
yeah the camera movement becomes a lot more obvious and jarring
like it looks filmed and not cinematic
nah in that one the lower fps is more jarring to me
I prefer right. Left looks bad especially when the camera moves. Such obvious stutter.
that might be the worst part to me, it becomes a lot more obvious its filmed with a camera whereas you kinda tend to forget that with slower framerate
I mean that doesnt sound like a bad thing?
'it looks filmed'

either way the 48fps looks better but if I on the sniper video set it to 20fps it looks nicer to me there
yes, I don't want to be reminded someone stood there and shot it
you could digitally add image stabilization on higher frame rate footage
so idk
I just want to be immersed in the movie
wait wait, smoother movement/higher fps makes it more obvious to you its filmed?
movie scenes arent supposed to feel like camera pov
I don't get it. I don't feel that way at all when I watch it.
real eyes don't perceive stuff in a set framerate to begin with
the lower it is the more jarring it gets
Built-in VRR
To be honest the biggest problem I have with 24 fps movies is display induced stuttering and blur.
If there were none of that it would be much better.
Looks like shite.
theres supposed to be blur, thats why high fps movies look so unnatural
Blur is a very camera thing to have
they do have this uncanny offness to them
You never question it when you see live television.
Depends on how they film. The shutter speed. But your sample-and-hold display adds extra and it gives me eye-strain.
that's because I know am watching live television, that style of shooting doesn't translate well to the cinema, imo
people say it looks unnatural to them and it's a hypothesis that would make sense that seing higher fps would get rid of that but I dont really see any evidence or tests on that
it makes me feel like am still watching live television or a home video when its supposed to be a movie
Agree to disagree I guess.
you havent seen the lighting tests?
nope
So you want low fps for the movie to look like a movie and to not actually look like eyes perceive things
yes?
literally yes
ty
So it's not about being immersed and more about tradition and being used to it?
no its about immersion
it puts me in a different mindset, a high framerate takes me out of that
and ruins the immersion imo
high fps makes everything look so fake and an obvious movie scene its impossible to be immersed
quite the opposite
don't get me wrong I love high refresh rates for gaming where I'm actively in control of things, there 60hz feels jarring
for movies its almost the opposite
at 24-30 fps its harder to spot whats fake and whats not = more immersive scene
High fps straight up make it look closer to how you would perceive it if you were there yourself
perhaps but that is a skill issue
I bet the next generation won't even have this discussion.
Cause they grow up on 60fps
that doesn't nescessarily mean its better
lol what are you talking about, the 24fps argument is well over a century old
More immersive though
to you, not to me
And 48fps has never been a thing until fairly recently. And more TV uses it.
Well, digital filmmaking is like ~20-30 years mainstream by now
analog tv was 60 fields per second
to me it feels like am watching an episode of americas funniest home videos or something
That because you are used to 24 fps
yes and it becomes much easier to tell fake props apart from real things
Not because they are better
I'd argue 4K is just as much to blame for that.
Prob more even
and the camera movements aswell, being too fluid makes it extremely easy to notice someone's just holding a camera
funny how we talk so much about preference this and that with keyboards but when it comes to enjoying a medium its suddenly no you're not allowed to enjoy this style better because this other style is technologically superior
Very easy to fix in editing
there are many factors to that yes but high frame rate is a big part of it
Sounds to me like a camera operator and equipment not tuned to the flow for 48fps, not an inherent technological and perception difference.
Not saying you can't prefer it, but the reasons you gave were just bad
yeah its a shame most high fps films fail to do that
tell people they can't enjoy vinyl because its much worse than digital streaming in quality
the folks who want to use it for artistic effect can do that all they want, its perfectly allowed
see 3d animation using animation on 2s and 3s
we are just saying, do the better when you use it
or they're wrong for doing so
24fps no motion blur looks jarring
24fps motion blur looks fine imo, my brain can fill the missing bits in just fine
Not saying they can't enjoy it
But if they say it's just better they are wrong
My eyes and brain can blue just fine. No need to force them to do so artificially 😄
well they can still perceive it as better
and 48fps no blur makes everything look uncanny
It's fine is it's some well
any artist mastering on vinyl in 2024 deserves to remain irrelevant
if they want 24fps for artistic effect, or heck even for budgetary reasons go for it
the problem is defaulting to it
to some people an album sounds better with rolled off highs, higher noise floor and pops and crackles
they should if they want to, it's their work
master it on a mixing desk at the very worst, best case do it on the computer
yep
ye 48 not looking like a movie
torturing their staff to make things worse for everyone is not ok
if they want to release on vinyl, go for it, but dont make everyone involved have to deal with that mess
although the issues of 24fps with fast screens is still there
if that's what they're being paid for then they should do it or find another job
well thats what happened
noone masters on vinyl any more
you master on a proper medium, then you just press the result
I dunno maybe one day 60fps movies will be more readily available and produced but its likely going to take a lot of time to win people over
Vinyl is low-fi but some are in heavy denial about that.
vinyl's a bit different comparison though because people mainly buy them to have a physical copy
yep
but shooting in 24 is like mastering on vinyl
you can shoot at 120 and get your resultant movie at 24
lo-fi best fi
just like how you can record your music in wav and still get it pressed to vinyl
and a lot of tinkering with stabilization and blur and props and cgi
CDs are a thing
to make them look realistic
skill issue
I think people mostly buy vinyl for the feeling of it these days
But ig artists also released stuff on casette in rhe early 2000s
as far as physical copies go, a CD would be superior in most regards
..which are also being commonly sold
but CD sound quality is inferior to vinyl

its not
lel
the dynamic range of a CD is significantly greater
vinyl sells better then cds lol
Purely objectively CDs sound good while vinyl shapes the sound a lot
maybe im still living in 2000
vinyl will impart a lot of imperfections of the medium onto the sound
CDs sounded better even in the 90s
They have since they released
vinyls do look really cool tho
big disc of art that also has music
the best quality you can get out of a perfectly calibrated vinyl is about 9 bits of DR
cd is 16 now, and with the shitty dacs of the 90s they were still capable of 12 bits of dr
listening to the same album on vinyl and CD, on big speakers, with my setup the vinyl often sounds more pleasant and for the lack of a better term, multilayered
but every turntable setup is different
less is more
maybe it was the shitty speakers cd devices used to have back then that messed me up
I can enjoy listening to a tape recording over a digital one because I like the timbral impact the tape medium has, but its still objectively worse
There's a blind test out there where people who said they prefer vinyl ended up mostly preferring CD even though when they did it sighted they preferred vinyl. Placebo and power of imagination is strong!
yes but you could use the info on the cd to press a vinyl that would sound the same as your vinyl
once youve vinyl'd the music, you cant get back what the cd has
much like 24fps is objectively worse than 60, but I still enjoy it more as a movie medium
That's fair
using a cd isnt the same experience ig
but is that even true?
i claim you enjoy 24 fps movies because the movies you like are 24 not the other way around
if the movies you liked were all 60fps, you would be saying the opposite
I dunno we've been shown some examples and comparisons here of movies I've never watched
and I preferred the 24fps rendition
Yes. It's in their imagination. Their ears like CD more while their eyes prefer vinyl.
Alright everyone. For next week's movie discussion, I expect everyone to watch the LOTR trilogy in 24 and 48 fps respectively. I expect notes to have been taken.
big plate better
Was that even masterred in 48?
again you are still thinking about it backwards
the movies you like are 24fps right?
Ik hobbit was in 60
i just watched lotr a week ago cmon 😭
I honestly don't know. I only ever watched the movies in cinemas.
hobbit was 48 🤮
lotr looked better on 24fps than hobbit on 48fps
There are sadly no releases of the Hobbit in 48.
What will be on the test
and it was interspersed 48 with 24
but tbf hobbit looks worse even at 24fps
i feel like 24fps are too much
most of them probably
15 looks better
Ah
hobbit is a meh movie period, meddling with the framerate ain't going to save it
so if you look at 24fps content, you are associating that more closely with the other 24fps content you watched right?
Interpolatin
as you said however, thats not movies
I still firmly believe that if high refresh rate movies got normalised people would look back on them defending 24 and think 'wow can't believe I defended 24 fps'.
Animation is better with 16fps
nah, it would be like vinyl or now starting to be tape bs
its usually 12 fps
Less is better
I can't think of the Hobbit without thinking of that one time Ian McKellen broke down crying in this horrifying non-set
Animation is better with good characters and story
If it has those, who cares how it was animated?
^
the filmmaker is always right
No
no
lol
Nothing beats the classic saying of 'it's old, clunky and expensive so therefore it has to be better'.
Idk, but why characters gotta be extra spicy.
Art can just straight up be bad
the audience is always right
what is preferred is better
that would be sad
true disney star wars is shit at any fps
Ya nah I don't need jiggly in my Adventure Shows.
Unless its queens blade.
Because if im watching queens blade i know what i got myself into.
the prequels are still the worst thing ever, they look like video games and it's just utter nonsense
the problem however is the audience doesnt know what they want, its the artists job to try to find it
The saddest moment
yeah imagine sitting in this all day and being forced to act at nothing
vfx on the old movies isnt great either xd
on the 70s and 80s ones sure, you can see the compsiting seams
Unironic question: 1 000 fps movies when?
but they were smarter in hiding it
when we get the tvs for that
nah, it comes to theaters first
Subtick in movies when
the orb or whatever its called is already 120fps
Is there a 120 fps release?
"release"
the content shot for the orb is all 120fps
but the only place you can see it is in the orb ofc
Oh. Idk what the orb is.
Wasn't gemini? In 120fps?
yea, shown in a very small number of theaters as such
inside of the vegas sphere is a theater
Orbius
Vegas sphere?
Sphere (also called Sphere at the Venetian Resort) is a music and entertainment arena in Paradise, Nevada, United States, east of the Las Vegas Strip. Designed by Populous, the project was announced by the Madison Square Garden Company in 2018, known then as the MSG Sphere. The 18,600-seat auditorium is being marketed for its immersive video and...
the meme thing
Ah.
so i need one of these at my home to watch the 120fps movies?
i mean yes but also no
you just need a theater and a license for a movie, the orb company is just the only one i know who is continuously producing 120fps content
gotta fill the backyard somehow
Me pondering my pondering of the orb
so with the old movies the seams in the effects were sometimes visible, but then they put them on screen for maybe a second or two
Do you think YouTube will support 120 fps anytime soon?
the prequels had entire minute long scenes set in PS2 looking hallways, fucking horrible
damn the sound is kinda bad lol
theres probably already a test video or two already
I haven't watched the prequels since I saw them on my crt tv
although can we please get high bitrate normal fps streaming before higher framerates
Can't one technically already make 120 fps YT videos by recording in 120, then slowing down by half and on YT watching at 2x speed?
you say that but i dont think thats even an original shot
remember the only sources for the original films are 🏴☠️ or vhs
most of the bad cgi looked good on that
in the 90s and 200s, mr lucas remastered all the stuff dozens of times
that's scanned from a 1983 theatrical print
yep I remember all too well
dude went nuts with his retouching
that looks entirely too clean to be 4k83
Btw does that still work to double watch time
i just rewatched the versions on disney+ and they looked a bit mid
these should be the newest ones or
it's an uncleaned 1080p scan
it looks rough and that's how I like it
well perhaps that section of the movie where its mostly a white screen is dramatically less crunchy than the other parts
but holy smokes that was a painful watch
i did rewatch 4k83 a few months after it was released
ooh 4k80 is out now, im gonna have to go watch that now
What's 4k80?
- google exists
- a 🏴☠️ of the original star wars movie released in 1980
I always get the "grindhouse" releases that were not cleaned, like with vinyl I kinda like the grain
and this looks more like it, and this is a fully practical shot
the compositing shots are the ones where the quality starts to die, and thats because the film literally cannot handle what they were doing to it
Spaceballs > star wars.
the prequels did the opposite and look like hot garbage
except the moments that people remember now are very much post remaster
with the CGI characters dancing with band in episode 6 and we see this creatures' uvula as it screams right into the camera, yes
that was the low point
my dad went to an original screening, rewatched with me a dvd version (~20 years ago) , and i showed some of the somewhat denoised 4k77 scenes (~2 years ago) and he was super shocked by how much worse it looked than he remembered
eh it was eastmancolor stock, what can ya expect
not the grindhouse bs, i showed him the corrected and denoised stuff
the blu rays were made from the camera negative whereas the 4ksomethingsomething are from 35mm prints that were constantly used
of course they do not measure up
never seen the blurays
making a 4k from those is only a second-rate option in lieu of a proper release
yea but neither me nor my dad had seen the blurays
he has seen original, dvd, and 4k77
and ive seen dvd and 4k77
I dont think blue ray would make star wars better.
SD footage tends to look pretty good on a 15khz CRT
Thats like trying to make speed racer 60fps.
Speed Racer aka Mach GoGoGo
projector not crt, and the projector i showed him on was only barely better than the absolute trash he had back then
I dunno, I never watched the fan made 4k versions, cause I don't think they can be all that impressive
dirty 1080p is great tho
is there a complete grindhouse? i never really cared to look for it
ok so a rasbery pi is not good to run a vpn
a 3b or 4 should be able to do 20mbps?
yeah I got a little collection of analogue SW rips, grindhouse versions of the original 3 included
i mainly use my oracle server tho
including turkish star wars cause that's official
but i wanted a vpn for my home but it seems to perform the same as my routers openvpn server
wow what a surprise, a random router cpu is about as fast as a pi
latency is horendious on my pi tho for some reason
Another reason was so i can install stunnel
I almost forgot, Turkish Star Wars has been properly scanned by now too
neat
ive never seen a grindhouse end to end, i couldnt make it 10 minutes through 4k77 corrected but not denoised
the only versions I couldn't find yet are rips of the 8mm home versions of SW
they look like complete dog shit
so when referring to media, crunchy is when you have jpegged or blown out the image in some way
grindhouse versions of film prints are intentionally leaving everything crunchy about the film, including tears, burns, dust, noise
So like when you upload a photo to instagram with an android phone and they intentionally scrunch the fidelity.
thats crunchy
grindhouse would be if someone took that, printed it on film, then you scan the film
Like when you download a sexy limewire fanart and print it on a cheap inkjet.
again
yeah basically a straight film scan, how you would see it in an 80s theater more or less
grindhouse in this case is specifically referring to film
Sounds like the booty hole posters my card shop sold.
Or like when you copied movie on tv to a VHS.
But
The its broadcasted via antenna.
So the quality is extra bad.
nah, most theaters are dramatically more careful with handling their film than letting it get covered in dust and bs
grindhouse is called that because once the film is over, or heavily used, it would be sold for cheaper to a grindhouse, where it would be shown until the film snapped, degrading the quality far more than a regular theater would see
Like bootleg Barny the Dinosaur tapes.
Or like when you bought kungfu movies from the mall stalls.
Then you find out its just half of each ipman movie playing out of order.
What do you guys think about run0?
it solves a problem that I, a desktop user never had
so whichever is used is all the same to me, as long as it doesn't have a longer command, like that filthy pkexec
I think it's pretty nifty, the biggest problem with it is that it doesn't cache that you authenticated recently like sudo does. I suppose that is part of the security model working though.
alias pke=pkexec
I wonder if people will complain that it's systemd again
