they still have a big lead in software and networking for now but for ai/hpc that is dwindling and hardware R&D they aren't really ahead currently

@lavish stone

"That's a great sign! It looks like your computer is correctly using the ASIO driver provided by iFi audio for your ZEN DAC V2. Here's why this is significant:

"iFi (by AMR) HD+ USB Audio": This indicates that Windows recognizes a specific USB audio device driver from iFi. iFi audio is known to provide well-designed ASIO drivers for their DACs."

#

Low Latency:
Your audio applications are likely bypassing the standard Windows audio stack and sending the audio directly to the ZEN DAC V2 through its ASIO driver. This results in lower latency for real-time audio tasks.

still loom
#

It was never done before hardware almost a year before the chip you're talking about though Kekw

ashen spindle
#

apple even did it with the ultra chip lol

still loom
#

Well... good luck using an apple chip for the same purpose 😅

ashen spindle
#

well, it's both gpus glued together, in theory they could

#

wont happen but the R&D isn't that far ahead of other options

still loom
#

But you're looking ahead to something that's not close to the MI300X Kekw

still loom
#

Or are we ignoring that

ashen spindle
#

are you looking at the b200 numbers?

still loom
#

B100, this year

ashen spindle
#

that's HBM3E which a variant of mi300 is also using

#

they already confirmed it, they cant really launch memory that isnt being made yet

ashen spindle
still loom
#

I guess it will never be like that

#

Like put their all in without actually holding back

ashen spindle
#

I mean that's kinda what they are doing?

#

none of them are so stupid as to not sell something they could sell

gleaming oxide
#

ok actually it might be the opposite. I found out that 5035853 broke many systems. On the same day they also launched different updates for "older" hardware which could explain a lot.
however, i cant uninstall the update from that day. Could System Restore do the trick?

formal ridge
#

anyone else have the problem if they are playing valorant and hold tab you cant use A or S to move

#

its only on valorant its az bit wierd

gusty kiln
#

@astral haven how does 1080p look on your 4k monitor? specifically gaming

astral haven
#

Looks fantastic with dlss or fsr, haven't gamed outside of that and native 4k in a while

gusty kiln
#

hmmmm, cuz my use case would be apex at 1080p, no dlss/fsr

#

if I were to get the dual hertz monitor

#

really hope they make a 27" dual-hz soon

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah 1080 to 4k is just x2²

#

So with any amount of good smoothing it works good

astral haven
#

dual hz monitor will look better than scaling

vagrant pagoda
#

I run 3x4k screens

astral haven
#

you can try if you have 4k yourself with integer scaling

vagrant pagoda
#

Is it going to do anything other than integer scaling?

astral haven
#

yea, its integer rather than normal scaling

vagrant pagoda
#

Nvidia just does integer if you set the output res to 1080

#

At least mine dose

astral haven
#

your monitor might, but nvidia doesnt by default

#

Same ui element

#

nvidia will by default output the signal natively, and leaves it up to the monitor to handle

#

you have to tweak with these settings to customize it

it already does that on samsungs without the new update

Quite like my chu 2's even if the nozzle is a little chunkier, they are still the least uncomfortable iem's I have used.

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

Methinks that's a rare case

#

Speaking of janky nonsense, I want NVIDIA to do virtual submonitors.

#

Make Windows think that each monitor is split in half or in four.

vagrant pagoda
#

display fusion dose that very very well

#

used it for like decade"

#

i have may surrounds split in to 1/3 2/3 top to bottom

as they are in portait

and my 2 side screens are triple split in portrait

astral haven

Does it work with the Windows logic to reopen applications on the right monitor?

Or does it do it's own

vagrant pagoda

pretty sure it dose it all

astral haven
#

Interesting

#

I can probably just buy a copy on Steam to test it out at home, and if it works at home it'll probably work at work

crisp granite
astral haven
#

i dont think anyone has one lel

crisp granite
#

...yike

#

reviews seem to be that it is a decent index competitor

#

comparable to a reverb g2

#

I would get a g2
but I can get a fresh and in box cosmos for the price of a g2 used

vagrant pagoda
#

isnt cosmo only 90hz?

crisp granite
#

that is correct

astral haven
#

and g2 is higher res afaik

#

neither are oled

crisp granite
#

not going to splash out for a bigscreen beyond

#

little too expensive for my tastes

astral haven
#

personally id wait to see what sony is cooking with the psvr2 pc

vagrant pagoda
#

i dont count the g2 as its inside out

astral haven
#

new firmware update actually makes the psvr2 work on pc with minor hackery

vagrant pagoda
#

inside out isnt comparable to one with real tracking

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

yea for now

#

very possible that sony can make a passive adapter work with a future firmware update, and they will sell it as a pigtail

vagrant pagoda
#

why would they

#

they want you to need a playstation

#

hence doing the game stream thing

astral haven
#

why would they unfuck the functionality on pc to begin with via a firmware update?

#

before you needed to do hacky bs to make it even consider working in vr (not in 2d mode)

vagrant pagoda
#

the current issue isnt intentional

crisp granite
#

inside out...um...definitely subpar but setup and teardown is a lot easier

astral haven
vagrant pagoda
#

thats what requires the hack to get working

crisp granite
vagrant pagoda
#

with amd it works

astral haven
#

neither work

#

amd can be hacked to work

#

nvidia cant

vagrant pagoda
#

yes amd works with a virtual link adapter

astral haven
#

and more hackery

crisp granite
astral haven
#

nope

crisp granite
#

they have actual virtual link ports though

vagrant pagoda
#

on windows it needed hacks

crisp granite
#

weirdchamp

astral haven
#

the thing isnt an actual headset

vagrant pagoda
#

on linux its plug and play

#

the new firmware update makes windows work

astral haven
#

on nvidia it appears as a 2d device (as sony and nvidia intend)

vagrant pagoda
#

only on amd though

astral haven
#

it still doesnt work

vagrant pagoda
#

it dose on amd

#

as up the update on windows

#

it always worked on linux

astral haven
#

ok so its a vr headset right?

#

either you and i have very different definitions of work or you dont understand what the support does

vagrant pagoda
#

if you plug it into a virtual link adapter into a linux radeon 7xxx machine it will work

#

now with the update

#

if you plug it into a windows radeon 7xxx machine it works

#

works means as a steamvr headset

astral haven
astral haven
vagrant pagoda
#

Does the latest PSVR2 firmware allow nVidia GPUs to be used? It's now possible to use the PSVR2 with AMD cards (with a VL port or adapter), without a DP-AUX emulator "dongle". It's not possible to use PSVR2 with nVidia without the "dongle", still unknown if it can be used with it

astral haven
#

and i dont mean 1 dude on reddit says its working, or a picture of the headset in steamvr, i mean actual vr, so including moving

crisp granite
#

iVRy...right

vagrant pagoda
#

ivry makes the only one

crisp granite
#

honestly, I want to see what Sony's official headset support (if at all) for PC looks like first before I hop on that bandwagon

vagrant pagoda
#

sony hasnt released an offical one

crisp granite
#

yet

#

they supposedly are cooking up something for PC

astral haven
#

the only difference between nvidia and amd right now is that on nvidia its a 2d hmd, and on amd you can hack it to be a 3d hmd

crisp granite
vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

ivry hasnt said they have psvr2 working yet afaik only psvr1 (by my definition of working)

vagrant pagoda
#

they released it for sale

#

because it works

astral haven

lol

#

psvr1 sure

#

idgaf about the psvr1

vagrant pagoda
#

there is a store page for the fucking psvr2 version

crisp granite
#

shhhhh, reading is difficult

vagrant pagoda
#

they must of pulled it today

astral haven
#

point is wait for whatever sony is doing or get a quest 3, unless you are only gonna be doing sit down vr

crisp granite
#

so wait for Sony

vagrant pagoda
#

there are videos of it working on pateron

#

but i cant bebothered to figure out how to rip them,

astral haven
crisp granite
#

but sitting is for shrimps and incels

astral haven
#

sit down vr is a type

crisp granite
#

I am aware

astral haven
#

so will you be playing sit down games and experiences or roomscale stuff

vagrant pagoda
#

the ones you dont need anymore lol

crisp granite
#

roomscale...none of which interest me

#

wait...

astral haven
#

if you arent doing the roomscale style games, then the tracking is muuuuuuuuch less important

crisp granite
astral haven
#

especially since most of the sit down style ones dont even use the tracked controllers

crisp granite
#

wtf

astral haven
crisp granite
#

then roomscale...

#

hard to call standing in place "roomscale"
but sure

astral haven
#

sit down is like simmer stuff

crisp granite
#

there'll be some of that too

#

but mainly shooting things

astral haven
vagrant pagoda
crisp granite
#

odd question

#

yes I can move under my own power

#

I'm not the average Texan

vagrant pagoda
#

i ment in what ever game youre talking about

crisp granite
#

most I'm interested in rely on joysticks for movement

#

but use tracked controllers for aim

vagrant pagoda
#

what game

astral haven
#

if it uses tracked controllers its almost certainly not classified as sit down

vagrant pagoda
#

yeah what game would you shoot sitting down with controllers

#

ww2 turret gunner sim lol

crisp granite
astral haven
#

again you can play sit down vr games while standing

vagrant pagoda
#

f4vr isnt seated

crisp granite
#

yes...

astral haven
#

the classification is more for headsets, the cv1 with its original tracking setup you couldnt turn around and still have tracking

crisp granite
vagrant pagoda
#

you can walk around in f4vr

#

its 100% roomscale

astral haven
#

games that are fully playable like that are probably fine on any inside out tracking, but for a shooter, presumeably fast paced, its really worth getting the stuff designed for it

crisp granite
astral haven
#

i wouldnt even be surprised if the psvr2 made over 20% of the population sick when doing fps style gameplay

crisp granite
#

I am immune to motion sickness

#

(is what I keep telling myself)

astral haven
#

you tried vr before?

#

and i mean for more than half an hour and while moving your head around

crisp granite
#

a few times

#

a while back

#

2019

#

probably better now, no?

astral haven
#

remember what headsets

vagrant pagoda
#

f4vr is also terrible to comparing tracking do to the engine barely able to keep smooth in 3d

crisp granite
astral haven
astral haven
crisp granite
#

not the Rift S
just the Rift

astral haven
#

cv1?

vagrant pagoda
#

the og rift had ir cam tracking

#

not as good as lighthouse, but better than inside out

astral haven
#

the cv1 is actually pretty fantastic besides being incredibly low res

crisp granite
#

would be the CV1 then

#

good but I am not going to try to hunt one down today

astral haven
#

quest 3 is about on par tracking wise vs 3 station cv1 and its better than 2 station cv1 afaik

#

cosmos is almost certainly worse

crisp granite
#

I do expect that to some extent because of the inside out

#

and I'd still rather inside out

astral haven
#

sure

#

but you probably want it to be good

crisp granite
#

serviceable

astral haven
#

the q3 is known good

#

vision pro is excellent but lol

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

i mean for controller tracked vr its about the same level of pain as a reverb g2 lol

crisp granite
#

so those games are on TWO platforms I don't intend to touch

astral haven
#

i recommended a g2 to a friend who said they didnt want to play games, just art and modeling
then they got addicted to games and bought the full knuckles kit to get servicable controllers lol

viscid ember
#

Does anyone think they can help me?
I have a problem with one of my new keyboards (The yunzii al66)
For some reason the windows and alt keys are switched.
Additionally the software does nothing to help. It doesn't even work

cursive summit
#

Is it one of those shitty keyboards that use VIA for configuration?

#

Seems that their keyboard is wireless and relatively mid-range priced, Wooting doesn't seem to be in their interest

viscid ember
#

I would get wooting but it is out of my budget

cursive summit
#

You bought a shit keeb it seems, unfortunate

#

Get a Ducky next time

viscid ember
#

the keyboard is actually really nice its just the software

cursive summit
#

Duckies are nice

viscid ember
#

everything but the key mapping works

cursive summit
#

Or actually, a Keychron

#

Keychrons are very well built and priced

#

A lot of good brands that aren't named "Yunzii" like an Amazon scam

viscid ember
cursive summit
#

Where you at?

viscid ember
#

I was doing some research and it looks like Im the only that is experiencing the windows alt switch

viscid ember
cursive summit

Uh, Seychelles?

Mauritius?

viscid ember
cursive summit
#

Ah, that little pot of everything

viscid ember
#

basically everything but proper tech stuff and clothing

cursive summit
#

How are imports there?

viscid ember
#

so so, not the best but I found a little shop with a few keychron, akko, ajazz and some other more popular brands

#

but they really overprice it

cursive summit
#

First two brands were good, idk wtf is ajizz

viscid ember
#

Idk I saw some good stuff about them

#

I contacted the support team and Im just waiting for a response, Im not sure if they'll be any help tho.

#

I FIXED IT

#

oh the software works now too

#

yay indeed

iron wave
#

Wrote a super crappy Sudoku solver.

I'll make it a little less bad later in the day.

cursive summit
#

Dunno how I'd write one on the spot, prolly would have to figure it out

#

Especially making it scale dynamically to bigger grids?

umbral heron
#

Brute force sudoku dogekek

iron wave
#

You just group the cells into columns, rows and blocks and track the numbers in each one.

cursive summit
#

Well yeah I know how Sudoku works, dunno how I'd write a script and how I'd want it to flow

iron wave
#

I used a 9 bit wide bitfield stored in an int to make it easier.

cursive summit
#

I suppose you complete a block first, then move on to second block, then third until row is complete, then move on to another row?

#

Dunno if that's efficient

umbral heron
#

For each field check and save which numbers are allowed there
If there's only one allowed number there insert it into the field
Repeat duck_bopping

iron wave
#
    public void refreshPencil() {
        for(int y = 0; y < cells.length; y++) {
            var row = cells[y];
            for(int x = 0; x < row.length; x++) {
                var cell = row[x];
                if(cell.value() != -1) {
                    cell.pencil(0);
                }

                var setRow = rows[y];
                var column = columns[x];
                var block = block(x, y);
                int pencil = 0b111111111;
                pencil &= ~setRow.values();
                pencil &= ~column.values();
                pencil &= ~block.values();
                cell.pencil(pencil);
            }
        }
    }

    public boolean step() {
        boolean changed = false;
        for(var row : cells) {
            for(var cell : row) {
                if(cell.value() != -1) {
                    continue;
                }

                var pencil = cell.pencil();
                if(Integer.bitCount(pencil) == 1) {
                    int value = 32 - Integer.numberOfLeadingZeros(pencil);
                    cell.value(value);
                    changed = true;
                }
            }
        }
        if(changed) {
            refreshPencil();
        }
        return changed;
    }

It's super stupid.

umbral heron
#

It's even better, ANDing 9bit fields is pretty genius though duck_bopping

marsh glade
#

I learned recently about sudoku rings which blew my mind

iron wave
#

The next step would be to track stuff like if a cell can only have a number in the same row/column you can pretend that number exists in that row/column.

I don't like Java at all havo

iron wave
#

Java is great.

cursive summit
#

I'd rather Python

iron wave
#

22 just came out with the best new features since 9.

#

Python is god awful.

#

Slow weird scripting language.

cursive summit
#

Duality of programmers

iron wave
#

The GIL is really brutal.

#

Look here, in the top left cell you know that there is a 7 in the top row so you can just assume that there is a 7 there in the other two cells to the right. (They already have 7s placed, but it gets the idea across)

#

I should change this code to make it work with base 9 and base 16 Sudoku too.

#

I'm honestly not entirely sure how I should implement that...

#

I guess bitsets in each row and column of a block.

cursive summit
#

What's a "base 16" sudoku?

umbral heron
#

Wouldn't just changing to 16-bit value work?

iron wave
#

0123456789ABCDEF and 16/16.

umbral heron
#

Hexdoku

iron wave
#

You could do base 4 too.

#
12|34
41|23
--+--
34|12
23|41
umbral heron
#

Make it work for every base n² hyper_wah

iron wave

It's not quite that pattern.

steep creek
#

take userinput where you ask for which base lol

iron wave
#

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 6², 7², 8², etc..

#

Honestly base 25 is probably the last "easy" one.

#

With a half decent solver you can generate puzzles too, just randomly fill a puzzle with valid values and then randomly delete a bunch of stuff and if it can't solve you deleted too much stuff.

cursive summit
#

Do asymmetrical sudokus too

umbral heron
#

36 would require some changes I reckon

int pencilU = 0b111111111111111111;
int pencilL = 0b111111111111111111;

Unless you go with i64, then maybe

That'd work too dogekek

#

World's ending on Tuesday!

umbral heron
#

I think so? Although I'd have to check if it matches sets
It may not, since hexdoku has even number of sets, but maybe...

umbral heron
#

Ok, so it won't work for even base sets, but it will for odd base sets
For 4x4 it won't work, because we don't have central set to subtract from (A+B)-(AxB) set
For 5x5 (A+B)-(AxB)-central set is equal to 144, and (A-B) set is equal to 36, and since we have 4 36 sets, then 4x36=144

Indeed, but that's something an artist would be able to do, I don't expect an AI to just suddenly be better than most artists hah

I had an idea, I'll feed a song into GPT, make an extremely detailed summarization, and feed that into Suno and see if it matches the original track in any way

I am a sucker for quality 1990s instrumental shoegaze and such songs are hard to come by

jfc what a PR nightmare.

sweet cairn
#

If so, it is kinda sus that their new PSUs only have a 3 year warranty.

unkempt lake
#

XD

#

They're already a shell

#

With their gpu and mobo divisions gone

#

Not even updating the bios on their 13gen mobos lol

sweet cairn
#

It's all been downhil for them for a while now. A real shame, used to be legends.

unkempt lake
#

They've always been an average company

#

With just a good customer service

#

Their products have never been reliable and they've had issue after issue almost every gen

#

1070/1080's catching on fire and having thermal pad issues

#

20 series cooler issues

#

3090's with bad solder dying

sweet cairn
#

Fair, but I'd rather an average product with amazing support than a good product with average or below average support.

#

I'd rather drug my nuts through broken glass than ever deal with ASUS.

unkempt lake
#

I agree service does matter

#

But i think calling EVGA legends is far fetched

sweet cairn
sweet cairn
unkempt lake
#

Evga stopped being a great company after like 2014-2015

#

When 10series launched it was the start of their downfall

sweet cairn
#

I never owned any EVGA products but it almost feels like a cult classic whenever I see people talking fondly about them on reddit etc

#

Other than Noctua, I hardly see people who are such huge fans of a specific brand with pc components.

unkempt lake
#

Sapphire/XFX on the amd side?

#

Whenever those 2 are brought up its because of their similar CS approach to evga's

I almost bought a Sapphire+ 7900xtx, partly because it could fit in my case, partly because it looked the best and partly because like you said, lotta people swear by them,

atomic hornet

Often they are just relatively cheap, XFX that is.

unkempt lake
atomic hornet
#

Never had the displeasure of needing warranty support on my gpu, but good to know.

unkempt lake
#

I used to work in a pc repair shop and well... dealing with parts still under warranty being returned to us by customers

#

I've seen a how lot of companies operate for their warranties xD

atomic hornet
#

That is fair, how do the other board partners factor in here?

unkempt lake
#

MSI here in Canada is pretty good also had a personal experience with them got a free replacement on an out of warranty mobo

sweet cairn
#

My latest warranty headache is trying to return an RM100e from Corsair. I've settled on just buying a new PSU and then selling this one because it technically is completely fine. It just sounds like trash and is driving me crazy. I can hear it all the way across my house.

unkempt lake
#

I know a lot of people shit on MSI because of their shady practices during the crypto times

sweet cairn
atomic hornet
#

Most I hear people talk shit about is Asus nowadays

sweet cairn
#

Especially for Mobos at least.

sweet cairn
# unkempt lake ASUS and GB are horrible

I avoid them on principle. When I built my last computer, a lot of people kept trying to make me spend less and go with a random ASUS or GB part, but am like nah I refuse to budge.

unkempt lake
#

It may not be pc hardware but the worst company i ever had to do and rma for was

#

Acer

#

Holy shit

#

Acer was so bad

sweet cairn
#

Isn't acer and asus the same company, or were at some point?

#

Same with asrock

unkempt lake
#

Asrock is also terrible to deal with

sweet cairn
#

The only GB product I have is a monitor, but thats because I need the KVM feature. The only other brand that does it afaik is ASUS, so it was pick your poison moment,.

unkempt lake
#

I have a gigabyte motherboard in my pc currently lol

atomic hornet
#

Actually a long time ago I had to go through warranty with Acer, it went fine. but that was in the late 00's so there is that.

unkempt lake
#

I had an msi mobo break and needed my shit back up asap

#

So got this gb mobo for cheap (it was 2021 and im on z390 so this board which was worth like 400$ at launch was on sale for like 175$ and no one wanted z390 back then) i didn't really care about warranty as i just needed something asap and this i could just go pick up locally

atomic hornet
#

I don't often have to deal with manufacturer warranty, last time was for my PSU went to bequiet directly because I had to ship it to germany either way, and the store was more annoying to deal with, also went fine.

But generally don't need warranty often.

#

If I do, there is always the store.

unkempt lake
#

But yeah that replacement msi mobo (that got replaced for free out of warranty) now lives in my dad's pc

atomic hornet
#

Also fine in the case of BeQuiet was 2 weeks turnaround time, I had a perfectly fine back-up psu so there is that.

unkempt lake
#

Couldn't be assed to swap out the gb and msi boards xD

atomic hornet
#

As for what I currently use:
PSU: the replaced bequiet,
GPU: XFX
Motherboard Asrock
Monitors: 2x Gigabyte 1x Asus 1x Dell, all out of warranty.

vagrant pagoda

this is why i have used silverstone for ages

that you can ignore if doing custom cables

they do use a standard 6pin pcie for the molex/sata

Im planning on buying one but would like to know if it's worth the price

but

sweet cairn
vagrant pagoda

they connect the 3.3 and 5v though the ground side of the pcie pinout

so you would only endup grounding out the pcie though the ground of the hdd

unkempt lake

#

Was super worth it

And i also got the 7900xtx

Cuz well 4080 and 4090 were just too expensive imo

unkempt lake
lyric hatch

Can anyone explain if it’s visually noticeable between 4K native vs 4K DLSS… like I can’t tell any difference rather than way better fps

teal garnet

yeah it looks like a lower res

sweet cairn

It really comes down to cost but most people blindly suggest shit without taking context into consideration.

unkempt lake

The 1080ti and the 2080 were the same perf at release

unkempt lake

1080 ti performs closer to a 2060 in modern games

umbral veldt
sweet cairn

I will say DLSS in 4K is pretty good.

DLSS in 1080p is a hard pass

unkempt lake
sweet cairn

and in 1440p it's a mixed bag

unkempt lake
#

Devs aint optimizing for pascal anymore

umbral veldt

frozen ingot

so yes linux is more capable now than in 2007, but is it easier to use? no not in the slightest lol

fair gull
#

pretty sure even linus torvalds said he cant see linux based OSs become a mainstream desktop OS unless theres a big shift in how things are done

frozen ingot
#

the userbase is the problem essentially, a large portion of it doesn't want to see it become a pleb OS and takes pride in gatekeeping it

fair gull

i use linux quite a lot especially from the cli but i still cant get over how unnecessarily obtuse the desktop experience is

frozen ingot
#

yup, eventually what got me fed up with trying to bother as well

#

for a server I'd probably have more time for it

ashen spindle
#

I mean there are reasons I dont use linux but pretending nothing got easier since 2007 is a bit insane when there are a decent amount of desktop options that work just fine for common tasks

fair gull
#

the issue is that those desktop OSs like mint or ubuntu come preinstalled with those common things.. if you try to install more or find an alternative to what you saw in videos where its mostly windows etc its quite challenging

#

its better than in 2007 but still not on any level where it can compete with how easily macos and windows are used by a layman

ashen spindle
#

yeah I'm not saying it works flawlessly but compared to 2007 you can very much just use those

the comparison was how it was in 2007 not vs current windows

even 2007 windows is several magnitudes better than a current linux desktop

ashen spindle

fair gull
frozen ingot
#

you'd have to dig around quite a bit to find those changes at least

fair gull
#

even in 2007 it had the most common tools preinstalled

id say most of the changes are things you really need to work yourself into and know that they particularly exist

frozen ingot
#

yep ubuntu and its deratives were well established by then

fair gull
#

for example what lana mentioned with wayland and pipewire... the normal user doesnt even know what these are if you name them.

#

so if they google something particular to those but with very generic terms you quickly run into issues

#

lets say how to output sound on 2 headphones ubuntu

#

and suddenly you gotta know what specific software for this is actually installed

astral haven
#

And windows does it automatically without you asking rofl

fair gull
#

no?

#

but its easily googled

#

and the ui for the sound settings is virtually unchanged since XP

astral haven
fair gull
#

i did but it doesnt duplicate audio output

#

windows apps can only send audio to one specific audio device

astral haven
#

Oh yea
But it outputs audio to 2 different headphones

#

Depending on the app

fair gull
#

yes but i meant as in both headphones output the exact same audio at the same time

#

or even speaker/headphones or whatever combo

astral haven
#

That would be useful
Something microsoft does on its own without asking (that we notice) often isnt

fair gull
#

but the point is while linux distros may have a lot of under the hood changes that are generally good since 2007 till today... the desktop users experience is basically unchanged and just getting more complex everytime the under the hood software changes

wheat plume
#

Plug in two headphones and only one will play audio

astral haven
#

Read the rest of the convo

wheat plume
#

Especially plasma and gnome

#

And budgie

astral haven
#

In what way

wheat plume
#

Installing software is a lot easier now

#

Especially since most distro use Flatpak too
Just open the software app and search

#

Click install

fair gull
#

ok how do i know what software to look for

wheat plume
#

You can browse categories

#

To find things

#

If the name doesn't show up

fair gull
#

ok so i watch a video on yt see a software that has functions i want and then just browse categories until i find a linux equivilant that sort of works the same

#

because for windows macos you can literally just google this

#

and itll give you 200 more apps

wheat plume
#

You can Google "office app for Linux" and it shows libre office, wpd, only office, etc etc etc

fair gull
#

ok and then it says use apt

wheat plume
#

Or just go to the office category in the software app

fair gull
#

and suddenly that app software thing is useless

wheat plume
fair gull
#

that was an example but ok itll say flatpak

#

or snapd

wheat plume
#

Yeh

fair gull
#

great still useless then to have the software install thing

wheat plume
#

And you click download
It'll download the ref file
And you click to open it and the software app will open and you click install

fair gull
#

yes will 100% work for all linux software

wheat plume
#

Quite a lot of most often used apps
And the list is getting larger each week

fair gull
#

you know the same way downloading an exe and running it works for all windows apps

#

since years and years

astral haven
fair gull
#

lol

wheat plume
#

Dafuq is that app

fair gull
#

something a user might want to use

#

for taxes

#

and sees youtube tutorials for

wheat plume
#

Windows only software
Yeah
That ones an issue

astral haven
#

It's only the most common tax prep software

fair gull
#

the fact is the layman (so not you lana but a random person picked of the street) would just use google and youtube to find software that they wanna use and tutorials. and most of those will only exist for macos/windows. if there is a linux software it will most likely be either convoluted to install due to requiring bash scripts in the cli or such OR there will be no tutorials around (meaning they would prob not find it and try it)

wheat plume
#

Most people trying to install software even on Windows just type the app name into Google and go from there

#

So yeah
That doesn't always work on Linux. But usually the solution is easier

fair gull
#

exactly and then its as easy as download 1 singular file and itll work

delicate cliff
#

just ordered mine is the time accurate?

astral haven
#

Quickbooks seems like it's got an online version but I've never seen anyone use it before

fair gull
#

linux needs to change to accomodate literal deadsimple ways of 1 click installs basically

#

otherwise it just wont take of as a mainstream OS

wheat plume
#

That issue would be solved if all the apps were in Flatpak

#

Or AppImage

#

Those are simply download and install

#

No issues

fair gull
#

i mean via googling

wheat plume
#

Yeh
Google
Go to app website
Download Flatpak ref or AppImage
Click it
Opens the installer
Click install
Done

fair gull
#

just so we dont get an the install software store thing can do it then

#

even nicer would be adopting the macos approach but windows doesnt either so its ok

wheat plume
#

MacOS
Android
iPhone

Some windows users

They are all used to launching the software app and typing the name of the app and clicking install

#

That's how it works most of the time on Linux too

fair gull
#

ngl

#

i never searched anything in a store in macos or android

#

i just go to google

#

google it

#

and click install

#

and its done

wheat plume
#

??

#

Even on Android it takes you to the store even after going on the app website

fair gull
#

yes but i never actively open the store

wheat plume
fair gull
#

and a yt video can literally put a link to the software in the description which might take me to the store but i never actively search in the store

wheat plume
#

That's an odd way to do so

#

Using a YouTube tutorial to install an android app from play store

fair gull
#

thats how i always do it cause googling is way better as i can read reviews, watch videos etc

#

just as if id download an exe or such

#

all a store gives me is images and some text from the devs

#

no real user experience

#

also a lot of macos apps still use DMG files not the app store

#

(i prefer those anyway cause its free portable app versions)

rocky canopy
#

you do what?

fair gull
#

literally a search someone would do... the os name and a generic search

#

and with both windows and macos its very easy to install the software just from a search like this plus you get the benefit of often times seeing comparisons etc without going back and forth a lot

rocky canopy
#

i see

fair gull
#

id really hope for linux to get better with this in the next 10years or so as it would bring device prices down a lot

wheat plume
#

By at least 100 Euro yeah

fair gull
#

well 50-150 id say

#

the OEMs get quite a huge discount on keys

wheat plume
#

They don't pass that discount on to consumers though

fair gull
#

so for home editions not much saved but the laptops that come with pro by default could see quite a good discount

wheat plume
#

Google voice typing is still awful

#

Or maybe it's just my accent. Who knows

fair gull
#

idk never had success with it myself

#

although siri also dislikes me and misunderstands my stuff
