The stadia controller also has clicky switches under the d-pad

#

I quite like using it from time to time

wheat plume

Clicky dpad, oh interesting

I think this is a way to introduce DP to the TV market and get rid of hdmi at last

umbral heron
#

HDMI should already die and be left in the past where it belongs duck_sip

latent kiln
#

I don't use HDMI for my monitors at home

wheat plume
#

Especially how corrupt the HDMI forum is

latent kiln
#

I use DP and DVI

#

DVI is just for my 1080p 60 hz monitor that is probably over 10 years old by now

wheat plume
#

Banning AMD from it because they tried to make it work better in Linux

#

.-.

umbral heron
#

HDMI forum shall know the wrath of Linux users

wheat plume
#

when we all switch to DP xd

latent kiln
#

I don't plan to use HDMI if DP can get the job done

wheat plume
#

Im already using DP on my Deck Dock

#

yeah, its just DP ports are a lot more rare :/ especially on laptops

ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

ive not seen DP on laptop before other than the Frameworks

fair gull
#

amd is still in the hdmi forum

thick elk
#

Some comment on that video say that such a port only supports lower ress hdmi

fair gull
#

nothing there says they were banned

ashen spindle
#

That is blocking the implementation in the open source Linux driver

#

That has nothing to do with banning amd from hdmi

fair gull
#

the only downside to DP for TV users is no audio

#

at least last i checked no audio

wheat plume
#

Cant DP also support more monitors at once?

#

Like daisychain them

fair gull
#

it can chain monitors

wheat plume
#

Yeah, that

fair gull
#

can doesnt mean will

wheat plume
#

🤔

#

oh

ashen spindle
#

Which is not relevant for TVs in 99.9% of cases

thick elk
#

MST adapters are also a thing, that split displayport but implementation of those is shakey.

fair gull
#

but yeah the whole audio via dp would be the main issue unless DP supports that

umbral heron
#

DP 1.4 can theoretically carry up to 32 audio channels it seems PeepoShrug

ashen spindle
#

DP does audio just fine

fair gull
#

oh well then lets axe hdmi

#

DP is king

thick elk
#

I still think eventually TVs will slowly move to USB-C as it has real benefits.
Just gonna take a pretty long time before we get there

wheat plume
#

Yes plz

fair gull
#

oh no

pls no

wheat plume

fine then DP

It actually surprises me that only this year the first usb-c enabled tv's are hitting the market this year or late last year.
I imagine it would be quite useful for the switch 2 as I imagine it will just use the standard here, just using one cable for everything plugged into a tv.

And they do mst as well!

I'm in dire need of swapping all of my SATA drives to one big NVMe one, because everytime I try to do several things at once while Steam does stuff in background, not only it takes literal hours, but also my PC wants to die and freezes horribly SilvFacePalm

sharp badger
astral haven
#

the low end is very sketchy, but for games who really cares

umbral heron
#

Hmmm... not ideal
What would be a good and cheap one? Can be PCIe Gen3, I'm still running B450

sharp badger
#

It all depends on what drives one can get & there's probably better test sites out there and might even snag up a Samsung SSD for decent price even the P5 Plus, Firecuda 520, SN770 etc.

umbral heron
#

I can get P3 Plus for pretty cheap, thanks k_kleeheart

pale sigil
#

P3 plus is a neat drive

umbral heron
#

Hmm... and how about WD Blue SN580?

cursive summit
#

SN850 is pretty great

#

So is 970 Evo Plus

#

So is 990 Pro or whatever it's called

#

SN750 is still great

#

So is SN770

#

Idk they are all fuckin good get whatever's cheapest

astral haven
#

"i want a budget drive"
vex: "how about all of the most expensive drives"

umbral heron
#

I can pick between P3 Plus, P5 Plus, SN580, Lexar NM620 and Lexar NM790, they are more or less the same price

cursive summit
#

Cal how much are you spending

#

In euros

#

Or peasantmoney idk

umbral heron
#

I'd wish to spend up to 600zł, so... €150 or so?

#

2Tb one

cursive summit
#

That's like 2TB NVMe territory

#

Right now ze germans have this thing close to 150

#

But that's a really damn good PCIe4

sharp badger
#

Yeah

astral haven
#

the nm790 seems to benchmark the best of your options, but its chinese nand
id probably go p5 plus given those options

cursive summit
#

Amazon is fucked rn, what's up with the prices and lack of availability

astral haven
#

and yes ofc get a better drive if its an option

analog sinew
umbral heron

SN850X is a bit out of my reach, €180 around here
So P5 then?

cursive summit
#

Caseking sells for 140 an SN770 but no current availability

#

Oh available tomorrow

#

I'd get an SN770

#

PCIe4 drive still

umbral heron
#

I don't have PCIe 4.0 dogekek

cursive summit
#

Get a new mobo too havo

sharp badger
#

P5 Plus is Gen 4 too

cursive summit
#

Anything that sounds cheap I don't care

#

Crucial is fine but the name sounds cheap havo

umbral heron
#

Oh, crucial is from micron, I had no idea

cursive summit
#

Yeah they are legit

umbral heron
#

And no cons, that's nice havo

cursive summit
#

I have sold out to Samsung or WD nowadays so I'd just get WD

#

Drives don't age

#

Well, cheap ones do but they still last years

sharp badger
#

I've got KC3000 currently

gusty kiln
cursive summit
#

Storage is a fun medium imo, you get the best you can get and it'll last like what, 10 years?

#

Far longer than GPUs for sure

umbral heron
cursive summit
sharp badger
#

I'd probably go WD or Samsung next

cursive summit
#

Samsung's been making fucky headlines but their flash is still top tier

#

980 series is a bit bleh but 970 is god, 990 is prolly just a 970 but PCIe.. gen 5?

#

I don't remember which gen is 990, it's good though

umbral heron
gusty kiln
#

990 pro is still 4.0

#

they haven't made a 5.0 yet

cursive summit
#

For longevity sake, I'd get 770

#

If 850X is too expensive

gusty kiln
#

samsung 1090 pro when

cursive summit
#

770 looks comparable to 850X anyways, prolly just shittier bins

sharp badger
#

The SN770 & P5 plus are trading blows when comparing the tests

astral haven
#

sn770 is dramless tho

cursive summit
#

Anything with a "plus" just sounds cheap

astral haven
#

on pcie4 with HMB dramless is fine

#

but when you are running pcie3 with potentially no dram, the lpddr4 of the p5+ is gonna lose less

sharp badger
#

Yeah and the SN770 has a ''Game mode''

umbral heron
#

I only wish that it should be faster than SATA havo

#

My standards are really low

astral haven
#

then get the cheapest one

cursive summit
#

It's just a really nice drive

astral haven
#

but the p5+ is pretty solid, even if you have to spend a few extra bucks

cursive summit
#

Surprisingly, it hasn't lost any value in 5 years

#

SATA SSDs still comparatively priced to NVMe

#

Though Samsung since then released 870 line iirc

gusty kiln
#

shame HDD prices have plateaued due to a fixed cost of manufacturing. 16tb still 250+

astral haven
#

yea but it used to be $250 for 12tb

#

now its $250 for 18TB

#

and soon it will be 20, then 22 etc

gusty kiln

the only question is how is newegg nowadays

astral haven

this is direct not reseller

vagrant pagoda

and if you trust amazon

thats not amazon tho?

#

Toshiba?

gusty kiln

no

they specifically make the platter

I was gonna say that Toshiba is just Kioxia nowadays or whatever

vagrant pagoda

seagate had fabs

You talking about Hoya?

gusty kiln

Showa Denko

#

maybe

vagrant pagoda

they arent bankrupt at all

gusty kiln

vagrant pagoda

astral haven

"Showa Denko and Showa Denko Materials(former Hitachi Chemical) merged and transformed themselves into "Resonac"."

gusty kiln

hmmmm

vagrant pagoda

but seagate and wd make platters

#

as dose showa

astral haven
vagrant pagoda

but only hoya is making the 3tb hamr right now

astral haven
#

not building platters, but some silicon stuff of some kind

astral haven
#

right

vagrant pagoda
#

for their drives

#

including ssds

#

remeber they bought out sandforce

astral haven
#

yup, there are a bunch of pureplay they could have been using tho

vagrant pagoda
#

but hoya used to just make glass

#

but in the last 4-5 years they have intragted the entire platter process

astral haven
#

yeep, gotta be real good to spin around and coat with atomic precision

vagrant pagoda
#

and i belive they re the only hamr manufacture

astral haven
#

180tb in such a tiny nas would be insane

#

question tho is if it would be cheaper than cloud storage

gusty kiln
#

yeah especially if you can get a n300/305 mobo

astral haven
#

google storage with backblaze backups using a windows box with rsync in the middle

#

just under 250tb of storage for $250/year

gusty kiln
astral haven
#

oh wait i forgot to include backblaze
350/ year for dual redundant

gusty kiln
#

where do you see 1tb/1$

astral haven
#

no

#

"unlimited" is 250tb, and unlimited is $250/yr

gusty kiln
#

ahh

astral haven
#

ah rats they increased the price again, its $270

fair gull
#

google storage has a plan with 1tb/dollar?

cursive summit
#

2TB for 100$?

#

I kinda get Cloud, it's pretty cheap, but tbf isn't it just better to get a home server NAS of sorts

astral haven

its a business plan too, which means less tracking but alot of google services are alot lower quality

like im not missing the inscreen fingerprint sensor

astral haven

as a user of both faceid and in screen fingerprint, id take the fingerprint any day, and id take both if the opportunity arose

#

and id take a power button fingerprint over either and both, and faceid+ power button fingerprint over anything

rough osprey
#

i prefer the way it is rn

astral haven

rough osprey
#

🤷‍♂️

gusty kiln

ultrasonic fp has been pretty nice

its super reliable in my experience

#

even from off angles

astral haven
#

sitting flat on my desk at arms reach it cant recognize me

steep creek
#

i wouldnt mind both but if i can only pick one its face id for me

#

because for the ipad i am close enough for it to not fail, and on phone the rare occasions it misses the watch unlocks phone for me

astral haven
#

ah but then you have to have your watch on

#

and you also have to buy a watch

#

and allow anyone standing within a few feet of you to be able to also unlock your device

steep creek
#

i admit the times where it was terrible was under covid with facemasks, but after that its been pretty reliable for me

#

good point with buying a watch tho, not everyone likes them

astral haven
#

my main problem is faceid is so slow

#

back or power button fingerprint is so much faster

#

front fingerprint is just a bit faster

steep creek
#

i think it would feel quicker if they gave you an option to auto unlock the phone once it recognizes your face

#

because atm you have to swipe up even if it is unlocked

#

that i admit is pretty annoying

astral haven
#

hmm its almost like that was an option with touchid

steep creek
#

lol true

gusty kiln
#

do you guys do the thing where your phone is unlocked on trusted wifi

steep creek
#

i would but dont have that

#

but yea i see the benefits of a finger sensor

astral haven
#

with my underscreen i can just tap my finger on the sensor a few times while im pulling it out and it opens

steep creek
#

i guess you can also unlock it straight from the pocket lol

astral haven
#

with the iphone i have to actually make the full swipe gesture

#

again tho at work my phone is on my desk or my charger

#

faceid doesnt work at a normal distance lying flat on a desk

steep creek
#

yea thats fair

astral haven
#

even propped up on my laptop it still doesnt

steep creek
#

when i am unlocking my ipad in lecture, its on the desk and i always have to hunch over a little to let it see my face

#

but phone i just hold in my hand so thats fine usually

astral haven
#

i guess i just hold my phone much lower down than apple expects

rough osprey
#

have these fingerprint sensor come far since the s21u ?

#

found that one a bit unreliable sometimes

astral haven
#

havent noticed an improvement

#

went from 21u to 24u

#

ive also never had it fail

rough osprey
#

interesting

astral haven
#

my mom who cracked her screen had hers fail but like...

#

and it still worked 90% of the time with the cracked screen

steep creek
#

does it work with wet fingers too?

rough osprey
#

sometimes

steep creek
#

because that was my main gripe with touch id

astral haven
#

the issue with wet more comes from the touchscreen being wet making the phone spaz out, if your finger is wet you are fine

#

if you arent fine, you probably didnt follow the instructions when setting up the reader, or had a bad screen protector

steep creek
#

yeah fair

#

i mean as long as it lets you in without having to dry the finger im fine with it

astral haven
#

but heres the thing
the phone's fkn 1k, give us both!

#

i can understand not wanting faceid because its an eyesore, particularly when you watch alot of videos, but theres no advantage to the fingerprint sensor not being there besides cost

#

sure whatever iphone se5 up to the 16 faceid only sure

#

but the pro models should have both

steep creek
#

yea i think they should

#

and lol with the newer macs with notches i originally thought they had face id, but turns out they only have touch id

astral haven
#

you are joking

steep creek
#

nop

#

was just as surprised lmao

astral haven
#

not even the pro?????

steep creek
#

no mac ever has face id currently

astral haven
#

im shook

just the sensor on the keyboard

astral haven
#

yea and thats good that they have that but notch without faceid???

#

just do a fkn holepunch

steep creek
#

i mean the notch is already there why not add the tech, it already costs well over 2000 usd here for the pro lol

astral haven
#

Yea

#

At least the vision __ will likely all have retina scanning

steep creek
#

some people are saying the display is too thin to accomodate the sensors but i dont know if thats true

#

yea

astral haven
#

It's horseshit, my pc has them

steep creek
#

lmao look at this

astral haven
#

Gotta take the rationalizations with a grain of salt

#

They change, the reason they didn't is because they didn't think of it in time and they are making excuses to not change it

steep creek
#

tho the patent for face id in macs was approved back in august of 2023

astral haven
#

Oh so they want to change it they just thought about it late lol

steep creek
#

the second patent infact haha

astral haven
#

Lovely lol

#

I'm not buying a Mac besides a vision __

steep creek
#

yea ive wanted a mac in the past but some things that are a dealbreaker for me, touchscreen to name one

#

vision i'd like to try but personally going to wait until the tech matures a little more for the price and weight to come down

astral haven
#

Same lol

#

I remote into my Mac at work so I can use my touchscreen

steep creek
#

lol clever

mild dome
#

Wouldn't an oculus and a Macbook achieve a better result vs the vision?

ashen spindle
#

no

#

unless you want to use it for gaming

#

but for productivity the vision is the only option for the most part

mild dome
#

Is the oculus blocked on Mac OS?

ashen spindle
#

dont think so

fair gull
#

i mean according to mkbhd the vision isnt... all that good for productivity

#

no wait not mkbhd

#

mrwhostheboss

ashen spindle
#

idk I trust people who use it over people who review it once and dont really do AR/Vr outside of it

fair gull
#

he did use it

#

for a month

mild dome
#

That's what's confusing me here
Everything the Vision does Oculus does better, even then a lot of task require a lot of typing which would make a regular laptop better

fair gull
#

the issue with the vision and productivity is that its only a screen mirror

#

theres no interactivity

ashen spindle
#

the hardware on the vision is a lot better

fair gull
#

and the keyboard doesnt get passed through

#

so you can see your hands thats it

ashen spindle
fair gull
mild dome
#

I feel like a lot of the Visions positive reviews come from people who buy everything Apple, and were never going to give it a true review

fair gull
#

his review of 1month using it for everything

#

including travel, work and play

mild dome
#

Like it could have been a rat duck taped to their face and they would still call it the best VR headset of all time

raven oriole
#

hello I received my wooting 60he but when I play my Z key to move forward it stops working on micro moments on FPS like on Fortnite it ruins all the games I can't play do you have a solution? THANKS

ashen spindle
#

my god no this has nothing to do with mindless apple fan boys

mild dome
fair gull
ashen spindle
#

you can just see at this video history that he's not about apple at all but I cba today arguing about if thats the reason or not

fair gull
#

the main issue id have with even getting a vision is that... screen mirroring with a vision pro is dumb

#

let me use the whole freely setable res of virtual displays and such

#

and why doesnt clicking work on the screen

#

its just really underwhelming for anything but browsing and watching content

ashen spindle
#

yes it's far from perfect and as everyone expected basically the devkit like every first gen apple hardware

fair gull
#

and even watching content is apparently bad cause its only... apple tv

#

no netflix no yt app

#

lots of good to be sure but id rather wait 2 or 3 revisions

#

also heard theres still a lot of issue with typing on the virtual keeb and how the "cursor" works

mild dome
#

The M2 processor is the issue, that thing can only do a single screen. The vision needs something better
But I can see my question of "What makes the Vision better then any other headset" just keeps going unanswered. So I really do just have to conclude it has nothing except that it's a shiny new expensive Apple product the fanboys congregate to only because of the fat Apple logo on the front.

fair gull
#

just watch the mrwhostheboss review and youll know the good sides and the bad

ashen spindle
#

resolution alone you dont get from something else

fair gull
#

imo it does ar/vr better than any other headset rn

#

also since when can the m2 only do 1 screen

#

what

ashen spindle
#

also it is really fucking tiring having someone just conclude it's all apple fanboy because they dont bother doing a simple google search when a large space of people that cover XR dont use anything apple at all before this

#

yes apple is shit, has nothing to do with what this HMD does

fair gull
#

i have to say while i wont purchase anything apple myself... using their products is bliss... its 99.9999% of the time just works

#

as much as that phrase is a meme

ashen spindle
#

if you need it in picture form

#

just that it's 3600x3200 not 3400x3400 but same result

fair gull
#

the most interesting tech for me is how they combine reality with virtual space

ashen spindle
#

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3_zPJCQ70A here's a shorter unedited video for just a quick overview of his setup

I am sure there will be many videos like this. But for now, I wanted to explain why the super power of "making hardware more like software" feels so good for power users

I don't expect normal consumers to do this, yet. Bulk and weight is the biggest issue. But for me, this is so close to what I want: I can't stop smiling

#VisionPro #spatialcom...

mild dome
# ashen spindle if you need it in picture form

"Well it has 2x the resolution as the Quest 3, and only costs 7 TIMES the Quest's price!"
Price is everything in the market, and I suppose I am so critical of this headset because all its advantages are wayed down heavily by that 3500 price tag. Like at that point I might as well buy a gaming laptop and a Quest and I would be way happier

ashen spindle
#

your point was, would it achieve a better result? unless your better result means better value it does not is the thing

mild dome
#

$3500USD, AUD is going to be closer to $6000

#

I still don't get a real answer except you replying with whole fucking videos

ashen spindle
#

yes because it's a lot easier to see the example of how its used rather than me basically typing out what the video is about

#

an all in one setup like that just doesn't work in the quest, the resolution alone just doesn't make it useable

steep creek
#

I also read that the estimated component cost for vision pro is like 1500 usd

ashen spindle
#

probably a bit higher but yes around that

steep creek
#

Could be

ashen spindle
#

the r1 was bigger than the original estimation of that BOM iirc

#

so that adds some cost and then also to keep in mind, component cost is not the cost to make it

steep creek
#

Ah yep I see, I didn’t factor that in

ashen spindle
#

raw material cost + cost to assemble it (including testing, repair, QA, logistics like shipping etc.) + development costs of all the hardware (we can say the M chip was already done but R1 wasn't) + software running on it

#

the screens itself are limited in how many they can make because it's so difficult they also have a line to fix broken ones which is cheaper than getting a new panel but still adds costs

steep creek
#

Yeah true, also r&d costs I believe ramped up a lot during development for vision pro

#

Lots of things that add up for sure

astral haven
mild dome
#

To be fair tho, a regular PC monitor is better and a lot cheaper

#

but if you want the AR, just absolutely must have it, I suppose you only have that option, just disappointing it can only do one "screen"

astral haven
#

neither are true

steep creek
astral haven
#

vision pro AR is garbage

#

its nowhere near as good as the AR alternatives

#

vision pro is VR

ashen spindle
astral haven
#

thing is tho the vision pro is actually cheaper than the number of monitors it provides to a pc user

#

a vision pro costs 3500+ $15 per extra monitor, regardless of diagonal size

#

if i want just 1 extra 100 inch monitor, the vision pro is already cheaper

#

and yet I can have 4, + other apps

#

and since i can touch type, im fine with any random BT keyboard

#

extra bonus, I get a 250 inch 4k (ish) oled 3d tv

#

On a Mac it's less clear since you only get 1, but it's still multiple extra browser windows for example

#

And you also can't use the Mac monitor as a touchscreen

#

oh yea you only need dongles after the first one

just to see how much they can improve on the negatives with just software changes

I have a strange issue with mpv on fedora though
It doesn't have window decorations and I can't resize it because of that
And the window is flat with no shadow when focused

#

It's really strange

#

But the app works fine other than that

final flame
#

mpv is eh

#

potplayer and mpc hc are better

astral haven
#

mpv is faster, with wider device and codec support natively, as well as some more high performance options (i use multi GB caching for all videos)

#

it also has far and away the best hdr support ive found in a video player

final flame
#

highly debatable

astral haven
#

its the only video player ive ever used that hasnt messed up either conversion

#

and also hasnt messed up either native

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah I use sm player which is mpv

#

For HDR stuffs

and yeah apex ran just fine on proton experimental bleeding edge, it ran just fine on latest proton 8 before the update

umbral heron

Used 8.0 before too, I dunno what they've changed that it stopped working, but I guess we will get hotfix soon so it'll work back there again

i have the m1 air and it's the best laptop i ever had the chance to come by

#

the most basic cheapest model too

fair gull
#

i really dont know why people hate on it just cause it doesnt have 16gb of ram... its not a gaming machine

raw zephyr
#

for longevity i understand 16gb of ram, but i will just buy a new model by that time

fair gull
#

well even with longevity in mind... apple can optimize anything for these

#

the same way they optimize iOS for their phones and tablets

#

but yeah by the time this doesnt get updates anymore itll still work fine for general use and i will prob have replaced it long ago

pale sigil
#

I don't hate on it

#

Just the price

#

Id love one

fair gull
#

well as i said its overpriced yes but its also the best experience i ever had with any device period

#

sans icloud even

pale sigil
#

It should be 16gb, 8gb is just not enough, idk what you're doing on yours but all I ever hear from people is complaints and I've seen it in person how awful it can be.

ashen spindle
#

Don’t need 16gb just for gaming but the issue is that 8gb of ram cost apple maybe 20$ at most and they charge like 200 for it

fair gull
#

currently im doing a chrome browser with over 50 tabs, 3 visual studio code windows with 3 node servers running, fork (git client), navicat pro, 2 terminals, slack app, discord app, gather app, postman app, obsidian app and mail

ashen spindle
#

If it was a reasonable pricing option it would be fine

fair gull
#

all working flawless no issues

#

also m1 with 8gb not anything brand new

ashen spindle
#

Pricing was already a scam there for more ram

fair gull
#

like i already said overpriced yes

#

but i cant say i ever had any issue just because of ram

#

my main issue if anything is cpu power

ashen spindle
#

Sure but that goes hand in hand, for some people it’s fine, for some it’s not and then you are forced to buy overpriced upgrades so the base price isn’t really what you can get it for anymore especially with some models where more memory comes with a forced chip upgrade

#

Like when I can buy single unit 8gb lpddr4x for 10 bucks apple quantities would be low single digit cost

fair gull
#

i cant complain i paid like 750

ashen spindle
#

Oh yeah you can get a good deal on it, still valid to complain though that they cheap out on a piece that makes it not fine for a lot of users to milk them more

fair gull
#

no one said its not valid. callum claims its crappy to use with 8gb

#

when in fact its not

wheat plume
#

I was using 9gb ram last night on my laptop with IntelliJ, Discord, youtube music, firefox, 4 PDF files open and a bunch of file managers open

pale sigil

#

when will people get that windows likes to overallocate ram

pale sigil
#

Overall 8gb isn't that bad on macs sure

wheat plume
pale sigil
#

But it's still not hard to run into issues and I personally won't ever go with 8gb

pale sigil
fair gull
#

the only way i can see me running into issues is gaming, heavy video editing or otherwise extremely ram intensive tasks

#

cant imagine anyone with general compute needs running into issues

halcyon moss
#

im currently at 19gb used
