Clicky dpad, oh interesting
Prolly was posted here before, I remember this whole thing unraveling at least a week back if not before
did I find something being sold for a decent price on CEX??!!!
The computer is an Xi3 X7A/Piston. I made a longer video about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9ZCjMtthqY
portport
I think this is a way to introduce DP to the TV market and get rid of hdmi at last
HDMI should already die and be left in the past where it belongs
I don't use HDMI for my monitors at home
Especially how corrupt the HDMI forum is
I use DP and DVI
DVI is just for my 1080p 60 hz monitor that is probably over 10 years old by now
I don't plan to use HDMI if DP can get the job done
Im already using DP on my Deck Dock
yeah, its just DP ports are a lot more rare :/ especially on laptops
That is quite the misinterpretation of what happend
ive not seen DP on laptop before other than the Frameworks
amd is still in the hdmi forum
Some comment on that video say that such a port only supports lower ress hdmi
nothing there says they were banned
That'd be grand.
That is blocking the implementation in the open source Linux driver
That has nothing to do with banning amd from hdmi
it can chain monitors
Yeah, that
can doesnt mean will
Which is not relevant for TVs in 99.9% of cases
MST adapters are also a thing, that split displayport but implementation of those is shakey.
but yeah the whole audio via dp would be the main issue unless DP supports that
DP 1.4 can theoretically carry up to 32 audio channels it seems
DP does audio just fine
I still think eventually TVs will slowly move to USB-C as it has real benefits.
Just gonna take a pretty long time before we get there
Yes plz
fine then DP
i remember that one monitor that has usb-c ports and they were breaking off all the time
o.o
pretty sure northridge fix even showed how to fix it once

ye
i dont trust usb-c on TVs/Monitors
You've seen usbc right? Most of those support the displayport alt mode. Natively.
Litterally my cheap as chuwi tablet-pc supports it.
It actually surprises me that only this year the first usb-c enabled tv's are hitting the market this year or late last year.
I imagine it would be quite useful for the switch 2 as I imagine it will just use the standard here, just using one cable for everything plugged into a tv.
Apple is sometimes questionable in that regard.
They have really good usbc ports.. Just don't support mst..
Probably too confusing or something
Or some overzelous lead engineer thinking it's a terrible idea and so forth.
The HDMI forum rejects AMD’s attempt to add HDMI 2.1+ support to its open-source Linux graphics driver.

They don't?
I searched the url and got nothing in the channel
Well the clip was not posted before but we just finished that conversation xD
Ah
Oi
I got a job because of Linux
did you get a pair of socks as a sign bonus?
two choices, striped socks or a fursuit
Nope, I had to bring my own
considering the price of a fursuit...
its an aliexpress one
for half a second i considered searching that but no thank you
Holy crap!!!
10 stops clean, 14 with denoising
witchcraft
Is Kingston SNV2S okay-ish?
I'm in dire need of swapping all of my SATA drives to one big NVMe one, because everytime I try to do several things at once while Steam does stuff in background, not only it takes literal hours, but also my PC wants to die and freezes horribly
the low end is very sketchy, but for games who really cares
Hmmm... not ideal
What would be a good and cheap one? Can be PCIe Gen3, I'm still running B450
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-p3-ssd-review
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/silicon-power-ud90-ssd-review
It all depends on what drives one can get & there's probably better test sites out there and might even snag up a Samsung SSD for decent price even the P5 Plus, Firecuda 520, SN770 etc.
I can get P3 Plus for pretty cheap, thanks
P3 plus is a neat drive
Hmm... and how about WD Blue SN580?
SN850 is pretty great
So is 970 Evo Plus
So is 990 Pro or whatever it's called
SN750 is still great
So is SN770
Idk they are all fuckin good get whatever's cheapest
"i want a budget drive"
vex: "how about all of the most expensive drives"
I can pick between P3 Plus, P5 Plus, SN580, Lexar NM620 and Lexar NM790, they are more or less the same price
That's like 2TB NVMe territory
Right now ze germans have this thing close to 150
But that's a really damn good PCIe4
Yeah
the nm790 seems to benchmark the best of your options, but its chinese nand
id probably go p5 plus given those options
Amazon is fucked rn, what's up with the prices and lack of availability
and yes ofc get a better drive if its an option
uuh that is kinda tasty
SN850X is a bit out of my reach, €180 around here
So P5 then?
Caseking sells for 140 an SN770 but no current availability
Oh available tomorrow
I'd get an SN770
PCIe4 drive still
I don't have PCIe 4.0
Get a new mobo too
P5 Plus is Gen 4 too
Anything that sounds cheap I don't care
Crucial is fine but the name sounds cheap
Oh, crucial is from micron, I had no idea
Yeah they are legit
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-p5-plus-m2-nvme-ssd-review
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-black-sn770-ssd-review
It's decent
And no cons, that's nice
I have sold out to Samsung or WD nowadays so I'd just get WD
Drives don't age
Well, cheap ones do but they still last years
I've got KC3000 currently
unless it's for a laptop
Storage is a fun medium imo, you get the best you can get and it'll last like what, 10 years?
Far longer than GPUs for sure
Nah, it's for my tower
I'm quite sick of having, like what... 5 or so 256 and 512 dirt cheap SATA drives there
Listen to the devil on your shoulder and just buy an SN770
I'd probably go WD or Samsung next
Samsung's been making fucky headlines but their flash is still top tier
980 series is a bit bleh but 970 is god, 990 is prolly just a 970 but PCIe.. gen 5?
I don't remember which gen is 990, it's good though
Hmm... it's only 30zł more expensive...
You prolly also get far better flash
For longevity sake, I'd get 770
If 850X is too expensive
samsung 1090 pro when
770 looks comparable to 850X anyways, prolly just shittier bins
The SN770 & P5 plus are trading blows when comparing the tests
sn770 is dramless tho
Anything with a "plus" just sounds cheap
on pcie4 with HMB dramless is fine
but when you are running pcie3 with potentially no dram, the lpddr4 of the p5+ is gonna lose less
Yeah and the SN770 has a ''Game mode''
then get the cheapest one
Ngl I am still running a SATA 860 EVO 5 years later as a second drive
It's just a really nice drive
but the p5+ is pretty solid, even if you have to spend a few extra bucks
Surprisingly, it hasn't lost any value in 5 years
SATA SSDs still comparatively priced to NVMe
Though Samsung since then released 870 line iirc
shame HDD prices have plateaued due to a fixed cost of manufacturing. 16tb still 250+
yea but it used to be $250 for 12tb
now its $250 for 18TB
and soon it will be 20, then 22 etc
if you're talking about those exos on amazon, those might be sketch
4TB SSDs are in mid-200s nowadays, now that's an achievement
150 a few months ago
my exos lasted a year of travelling before throwing smart, then i rma'd and got another 3? years and its still going
I meant the seller might be selling recertified drives as new
For NVME ssds I wouldnt recommend the Samsung 980pro, only had problems with them (had 3)
The Kingston KC3000/Fury Renegade or the Sabrent Rocket 4 plus are a solid choice.
🤷 easy to tell, does it come sealed or not, if its not sealed, rma
you dont want to know what i paid for my first ssd
10 pennies
no one talks about ultrastar drives much nowadays
but apparently the failure rate is really low
350 for 120gb
nope
oof
32nm mlc
wtf
I would be careful with them, recertified drives are in general as unreliable as used ones from ebay.
was 09 or 10
ah
I mean in a raid array in a nas or das, it's fine
buy a few spares
also worth noting that helium generally works or doesnt
And then after one fails, during rebuild of the raid array another fails.
if the seal breaks, you get a bunch of smart
that's why you have backups
I know, but still annoying.
the idea behind helium drives is so simple lol
Toshiba N300 16 TB seems to be the only one under 300 across the board from all retailers
for new drives
seagate skyhawk, n300
329+75 promo
for 18tb
the only question is how is newegg nowadays
this is direct not reseller
and if you trust amazon
293 for a 20tb
thats not amazon tho?
I think you can buy direct from seagate now
240 for 14tb is not bad
unless that specific model have a high failure rate
30TB SMR
pretty sure the 30tb hamr drives are currently cmr?
oh wait it's 32TB SMR
yea
I meant the SMR part
3tb platters is insane
smr is for video mostly
ah
its not really that common tho
Seagate don't own any fabs right?
yeah that's why I was confused
Whose memory are they using
all drive manufactuerer use plates from a now bankrupt japanese company
I was gonna say that Toshiba is just Kioxia nowadays or whatever
wut
seagate had fabs
You talking about Hoya?
they arent bankrupt at all
Hoya makes the hamr platters for seagate
"Showa Denko and Showa Denko Materials(former Hitachi Chemical) merged and transformed themselves into "Resonac"."
hmmmm
current stock value is 4.5 billion usd equiv, they are fine
but only hoya is making the 3tb hamr right now
https://www.seagate.com/news/news-archive/-57-4-million-investment-announced-by-seagate-technology-pr/
seagate has a semiconductor fab of some kind in ireland that they are expanding
not building platters, but some silicon stuff of some kind
seagate makes controllers
right
yup, there are a bunch of pureplay they could have been using tho
but hoya used to just make glass
but in the last 4-5 years they have intragted the entire platter process
yeep, gotta be real good to spin around and coat with atomic precision
and i belive they re the only hamr manufacture
180tb in such a tiny nas would be insane
question tho is if it would be cheaper than cloud storage
yeah especially if you can get a n300/305 mobo
google storage with backblaze backups using a windows box with rsync in the middle
just under 250tb of storage for $250/year

oh wait i forgot to include backblaze
350/ year for dual redundant
where do you see 1tb/1$
ahh
ah rats they increased the price again, its $270
google storage has a plan with 1tb/dollar?
2TB for 100$?
I kinda get Cloud, it's pretty cheap, but tbf isn't it just better to get a home server NAS of sorts
again unlimited for $270, and its capped at 250tb
its a business plan too, which means less tracking but alot of google services are alot lower quality
They weren't discontinued yet?
nope 1650/1660 lingered on for a long time
zowie 540hz is 1200€ 😵💫
that's probably the most expensive TN panel in existence rn lol
ye having the asus rog version as the "budget" option is weird
Why on earth would you want a TN panel
By far the worst of all the panel techs
Even I would rather get an OLED over a TN
Price
Mark, we don't live in 2014 anymore
TN is leading in terms of the Hz race
TN is only for esport audience anyway
the 540hz seems to be not that bad
1400:1 contrast
but ye the 480hz oled seems more attractive
and 95% dci p3
literally no point with this https://videocardz.com/newz/lg-confirms-its-32-inch-oled-monitor-with-4k-240hz-1080p-480hz-dual-mode-is-priced-at-1399
LG details its high-end monitor for gamers Dual-Mode monitor based on WOLED technology. LG has listed their high-end gaming OLED monitor, featuring the so-called Dual-Mode. It basically means that this monitor supports two resolutions and two refresh rates natively, which can be seamlessly switched by users. It is designed for competitive gamin...
costs 200 more
but strobing
too big
27" model
also esport people prefer 24"
coming
the 27inch 480hz seems more interesting
get a larger desk
no t hey dont 😄
they only use 24 because they have to lel
also bigger 1080p is stupid for everyone
a lot of them like to sit really close to the monitor
24" still let them see the entire screen while super close
and they dont have to sit as close if its really big
yeah bc on a shit TN u cnat see shit bc colors are so bad
and brightness not the best yet on oled
thats absolutely not the issue
for events and stuff in bright environments
also zowie at LAN so zowie at home, no need to get used to a new screen
tbf 480 hz no strobe is far safer than relying on strobing being good on that TN
yet they still use strobing
headache wise as well
some do
if you get headaches from even 240hz strobing, you probably wont cut it for esports
can someone make a 24inch 1440p one
or just use 32 4k
lol
27-32" is prob the best size for esports IME and esp with OLED increasing spatial resolution way beyond TN capability. Everyone just thinking about temporal resolution and forgetting other aspects effect clarity as well.
yep
a 4k panel running at 1080p natively 1:4 in hardware is gonna be much clearer than regular rgb stripe 1080p
and larger allows it to be further away for the same fov and ppd
Aye
it sounds weird but I kinda like a tiny bit of motion blur, strobing is hard on the eyes after too long
keep in mind that depends on the quality of the strobing
vision pro causes me headaches, index doesnt at all
i just like 24inch at arms length distance so when switching to a 27inch one i would have to increase the distance to make the monitor fill a similar part of my view
yes
thats why i would like 1440p at 24 :D
this is how i game
just get 27-32 curved
via ips but still
again thats not gonna happen due to the pixel pitch not having any other use
closest you will get is a 32 4k, and you can have black borders
i love 27 4k for text
but i have triple setup and triple 4k is too much for games
love games with render scaling though
ye i use 27 4k as a secondary monitor
50% render scale with aa is dope
Predicting distances in Tribes 3 while moving at 200 kph is hard on a TN
Shadows and colours play too big part in depth perception to predict distances and speed
32 4k main 27 4k secondary and dual 27 4k at work
Tho native 4k into 1080p should help as well
at that point we are in woo-woo territory in terms of diminishing returns lol
repsonse time > hz over 300ish
ig that could be a problem for the tn
lcd does already exist that hits the khz region, as does oled, question is when is it coming to consumer
next 3-5years probably

While virtual reality surely has high performance requirements to maintain a comfortable experience, immersive AR may ultimately require a greater level of performance if we’re to achieve the theoretical ideal.

why does the GUI resource monitor show a GB more ram being used than what htop shows?!
oldest trick in the book
🤦♀️ im a special type of stupid
idk it weirds me out when companies refer to a product by anything other than what type of product it is
For example, Xiaomi keeps calling this stylus "The gadget"
They just got tired of saying pen over and over again
pen is shorter to type xd
did they just steal the image from apple
nah, thats just how similar it is
you can tell its not apple bc its not that godawful triangle or the raised stand thing
i mean
ye released in 2018
only for the ipad pros
and two ipad airs
ipad pro sized ipad airs, not the normal ones
oh i guess theres no 10.2 ipad air any more
wait if it works on the 10.9 ipad air why doesnt it work on the 10.9 ipad
ffs they have a whole different design
doesnt have pins
or the contacts for them
wait so they do know how to make a proper fingerprint reader
as a user of both faceid and in screen fingerprint, id take the fingerprint any day, and id take both if the opportunity arose
and id take a power button fingerprint over either and both, and faceid+ power button fingerprint over anything
i prefer the way it is rn
cope
🤷♂️
ultrasonic fp has been pretty nice
sitting flat on my desk at arms reach it cant recognize me
i wouldnt mind both but if i can only pick one its face id for me
because for the ipad i am close enough for it to not fail, and on phone the rare occasions it misses the watch unlocks phone for me
ah but then you have to have your watch on
and you also have to buy a watch
and allow anyone standing within a few feet of you to be able to also unlock your device
i admit the times where it was terrible was under covid with facemasks, but after that its been pretty reliable for me
good point with buying a watch tho, not everyone likes them
my main problem is faceid is so slow
back or power button fingerprint is so much faster
front fingerprint is just a bit faster
i think it would feel quicker if they gave you an option to auto unlock the phone once it recognizes your face
because atm you have to swipe up even if it is unlocked
that i admit is pretty annoying
hmm its almost like that was an option with touchid
lol true
do you guys do the thing where your phone is unlocked on trusted wifi
with my underscreen i can just tap my finger on the sensor a few times while im pulling it out and it opens
i guess you can also unlock it straight from the pocket lol
with the iphone i have to actually make the full swipe gesture
again tho at work my phone is on my desk or my charger
faceid doesnt work at a normal distance lying flat on a desk
yea thats fair
even propped up on my laptop it still doesnt
when i am unlocking my ipad in lecture, its on the desk and i always have to hunch over a little to let it see my face
but phone i just hold in my hand so thats fine usually
i guess i just hold my phone much lower down than apple expects
have these fingerprint sensor come far since the s21u ?
found that one a bit unreliable sometimes
interesting
my mom who cracked her screen had hers fail but like...
and it still worked 90% of the time with the cracked screen
does it work with wet fingers too?
sometimes
because that was my main gripe with touch id
the issue with wet more comes from the touchscreen being wet making the phone spaz out, if your finger is wet you are fine
if you arent fine, you probably didnt follow the instructions when setting up the reader, or had a bad screen protector
yeah fair
i mean as long as it lets you in without having to dry the finger im fine with it
but heres the thing
the phone's fkn 1k, give us both!
i can understand not wanting faceid because its an eyesore, particularly when you watch alot of videos, but theres no advantage to the fingerprint sensor not being there besides cost
sure whatever iphone se5 up to the 16 faceid only sure
but the pro models should have both
yea i think they should
and lol with the newer macs with notches i originally thought they had face id, but turns out they only have touch id
you are joking
not even the pro?????
no mac ever has face id currently
im shook
just the sensor on the keyboard
yea and thats good that they have that but notch without faceid???
just do a fkn holepunch
i mean the notch is already there why not add the tech, it already costs well over 2000 usd here for the pro lol
some people are saying the display is too thin to accomodate the sensors but i dont know if thats true
yea
It's horseshit, my pc has them
lmao look at this
Gotta take the rationalizations with a grain of salt
They change, the reason they didn't is because they didn't think of it in time and they are making excuses to not change it
tho the patent for face id in macs was approved back in august of 2023
Oh so they want to change it they just thought about it late lol
the second patent infact haha
yea ive wanted a mac in the past but some things that are a dealbreaker for me, touchscreen to name one
vision i'd like to try but personally going to wait until the tech matures a little more for the price and weight to come down
lol clever
Wouldn't an oculus and a Macbook achieve a better result vs the vision?
no
unless you want to use it for gaming
but for productivity the vision is the only option for the most part
Is the oculus blocked on Mac OS?
dont think so
i mean according to mkbhd the vision isnt... all that good for productivity
no wait not mkbhd
mrwhostheboss
idk I trust people who use it over people who review it once and dont really do AR/Vr outside of it
That's what's confusing me here
Everything the Vision does Oculus does better, even then a lot of task require a lot of typing which would make a regular laptop better
the issue with the vision and productivity is that its only a screen mirror
theres no interactivity
the hardware on the vision is a lot better
hi im brad. and i spent over 80+ hours on a vr headset in a week. Lets recap
Support me: https://bradsmells.com/patreon
#apple #visionpro #spatialcomputing
The Apple Vision Pro has been out for a full month now - time for a deep dive review 🤓 Secure your privacy with Surfshark! Enter coupon code BOSS for an extra 3 months free at https://surfshark.deals/BOSS
I spend a LOT of time trying to make my videos as concise, polished and useful as possible for you - if you would like to support me on that ...
I feel like a lot of the Visions positive reviews come from people who buy everything Apple, and were never going to give it a true review
Like it could have been a rat duck taped to their face and they would still call it the best VR headset of all time
hello I received my wooting 60he but when I play my Z key to move forward it stops working on micro moments on FPS like on Fortnite it ruins all the games I can't play do you have a solution? THANKS
my god no this has nothing to do with mindless apple fan boys
So what does it do differently?
Because I am not going to watch a 2 hour video from some dude I've never seen before just to confirm my suspicion that he was never going to rate it negatively
that doesnt go indepth about anything work related from me skipping through
you can just see at this video history that he's not about apple at all but I cba today arguing about if thats the reason or not
the main issue id have with even getting a vision is that... screen mirroring with a vision pro is dumb
let me use the whole freely setable res of virtual displays and such
and why doesnt clicking work on the screen
its just really underwhelming for anything but browsing and watching content
yes it's far from perfect and as everyone expected basically the devkit like every first gen apple hardware
and even watching content is apparently bad cause its only... apple tv
no netflix no yt app
lots of good to be sure but id rather wait 2 or 3 revisions
also heard theres still a lot of issue with typing on the virtual keeb and how the "cursor" works
The M2 processor is the issue, that thing can only do a single screen. The vision needs something better
But I can see my question of "What makes the Vision better then any other headset" just keeps going unanswered. So I really do just have to conclude it has nothing except that it's a shiny new expensive Apple product the fanboys congregate to only because of the fat Apple logo on the front.
just watch the mrwhostheboss review and youll know the good sides and the bad
resolution alone you dont get from something else
imo it does ar/vr better than any other headset rn
also since when can the m2 only do 1 screen
what
also it is really fucking tiring having someone just conclude it's all apple fanboy because they dont bother doing a simple google search when a large space of people that cover XR dont use anything apple at all before this
yes apple is shit, has nothing to do with what this HMD does
i have to say while i wont purchase anything apple myself... using their products is bliss... its 99.9999% of the time just works
as much as that phrase is a meme
if you need it in picture form
just that it's 3600x3200 not 3400x3400 but same result
the most interesting tech for me is how they combine reality with virtual space
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3_zPJCQ70A here's a shorter unedited video for just a quick overview of his setup
I am sure there will be many videos like this. But for now, I wanted to explain why the super power of "making hardware more like software" feels so good for power users
I don't expect normal consumers to do this, yet. Bulk and weight is the biggest issue. But for me, this is so close to what I want: I can't stop smiling
#VisionPro #spatialcom...
"Well it has 2x the resolution as the Quest 3, and only costs 7 TIMES the Quest's price!"
Price is everything in the market, and I suppose I am so critical of this headset because all its advantages are wayed down heavily by that 3500 price tag. Like at that point I might as well buy a gaming laptop and a Quest and I would be way happier
your point was, would it achieve a better result? unless your better result means better value it does not is the thing
$3500USD, AUD is going to be closer to $6000
I still don't get a real answer except you replying with whole fucking videos
yes because it's a lot easier to see the example of how its used rather than me basically typing out what the video is about
an all in one setup like that just doesn't work in the quest, the resolution alone just doesn't make it useable
I also read that the estimated component cost for vision pro is like 1500 usd
probably a bit higher but yes around that
Could be
the r1 was bigger than the original estimation of that BOM iirc
so that adds some cost and then also to keep in mind, component cost is not the cost to make it
Ah yep I see, I didn’t factor that in
raw material cost + cost to assemble it (including testing, repair, QA, logistics like shipping etc.) + development costs of all the hardware (we can say the M chip was already done but R1 wasn't) + software running on it
the screens itself are limited in how many they can make because it's so difficult they also have a line to fix broken ones which is cheaper than getting a new panel but still adds costs
Yeah true, also r&d costs I believe ramped up a lot during development for vision pro
Lots of things that add up for sure
except for text clarity
vision is excellent as a PC monitor
To be fair tho, a regular PC monitor is better and a lot cheaper
but if you want the AR, just absolutely must have it, I suppose you only have that option, just disappointing it can only do one "screen"
neither are true
This I didn’t know actually, you’re saying they try to fix the displays that don’t make it in production?
vision pro AR is garbage
its nowhere near as good as the AR alternatives
vision pro is VR
that was my understanding yes, so if it had a small defect it was worth having people fix it vs having it be a defective yeidl
Ah very interesting
thing is tho the vision pro is actually cheaper than the number of monitors it provides to a pc user
a vision pro costs 3500+ $15 per extra monitor, regardless of diagonal size
if i want just 1 extra 100 inch monitor, the vision pro is already cheaper
and yet I can have 4, + other apps
and since i can touch type, im fine with any random BT keyboard
extra bonus, I get a 250 inch 4k (ish) oled 3d tv
On a Mac it's less clear since you only get 1, but it's still multiple extra browser windows for example
And you also can't use the Mac monitor as a touchscreen
I am sure there will be many videos like this. But for now, I wanted to explain why the super power of "making hardware more like software" feels so good for power users
I don't expect normal consumers to do this, yet. Bulk and weight is the biggest issue. But for me, this is so close to what I want: I can't stop smiling
#VisionPro #spatialcom...
oh yea you only need dongles after the first one
POV: you install Windows 11
I appreciate the weeb wallpaper
sorry noone outside the linux hivemind knows what that means
?
remove Edge
whats not to understand?
Even most Windows users want to remove Edge
im quite confident anyone paying attention and running windows has had that thought run through their head
average windows users use it so little they forgot it existed
average windows users use it until it stops working, and then they never use it again until it forcibly pops itself up
averaga window users doesnt know they are using an OS called Windows so they just open something that looks like a web browser to do their shit in
I use edge on the laptop, gives me good battery life, performs decent too imo
yeah I mean for the most part its chrome now so nothing too bad for that
yep
the popups irritate me to no end
i doubt its an issue when you use edge, but when you dont use edge, edge keeps coming back
lol
I haven’t gotten those for some reason on my desktop, almost never use edge on it
i have had to change default app for pdfs back from edge to adobe at least 7 times on my computer, dozens of times for other users
Oh wait lol I forgot about pdfs, yea it bothers me about that sometimes
That and some html I forgot the name of it file type
not too big of a shocker sadly when looking at what party won the last election
oh wow they’re that cheap now
if only a 1 tb flash drive was very useful
yea, might as well get a nvme enclosure
this baby can hold so many linux distros
i dont want an nvme enclosure hanging off my keychain lmao
maybe one of the 2240 ones but even those are twice the size of these
more like what do you always need with you that’s 1 tb in size
i have a bootable repair stick with just 3 computers' recovery out of the 10 most common ones we have
I remember when I first built my PC and all I could afford was a 128GB SSD, even though I had a top of the line GPU.
Now 1TB SSDs cost less then the RGB features in the case
with a 1tb i could get around 20 of them,
Seems like the consumer HDD is going to go the way of the floppy soon, especially with how some AAAA (tho unoptimsed) games are starting to require SSD speeds
*tape drive
not floppy
Zip 😂
Yup, but just another storage media gone to the wayside
Really?! I thought that would have died around 2014?
havent been paying attention lol
the great tape shortage of 2019 was pretty serious for financial, medical, and science
lawsuits were flying
Oh, I guess I could see Old Banks and Credit Unions still on tape. A lot of their systems are still late 90's Early 2000's based.
lol
most recent version of LTO was released in 2021
18TB raw, 45TB text per $100 cartridge
a small rack server for around 10k can hold 24 cartridges
Yeah that makes perfect sense for back-up media. Didn't know IBM was still involved in development. "LTO Ultrium Technology was developed jointly by HPE, IBM and Quantum"
Everyone uses tape for long term storage. Even tech companies.
It's the cheapest, safest way.
not everyone, it depends heavily on the type of data
i challenge you to find a technology that IBM isnt involved in developing
emphasis on cold
😂 that's true
Emphasis on emphasis.
alot of log term storage is not that cold
google? NSA?
those are the two largest data consumers in the world, both using hdds
its worth noting more bytes of storage are produced of hdds per year than tape
What could Google want to store for posterity?
It's for having the ability to access if needed, not for caching.
same for hdds
Not in the same manner.
Hi, can you advise me on a gaming screen? I play all fps
the quartz lattice polarization crystals or whatever they are called are for posterity
tape only lasts in the #0s of years
Makes for a great coaster too
wont last 10s of years if you do that lol
Sustainable and cost-effective long-term storage remains an unsolved problem. The most widely used storage technologies today are magnetic (hard disk drives and tape). They use media that degrades over time and has a limited lifetime, which leads to inefficient, wasteful, and costly solutions for long-lived data. This paper presents Silica: the...

@ashen spindle can I output 2x 1440p 144hz on a USB 3.2 Gen 1?
Or 1x60hz 1080p and 1x1440p/144hz
Or even a 1440p ultrawide 144hz with a 1440p 144hz.
I dont remember which name is what at this point so you'll need to find a list or matrix online that deciphers that
or perhaps check total bandwidth since usually they just talk about 4k60 or such
Boasting dual 8-Channel ES9039SPRO DACs, dual 8-Channel THX AAA 788+ amp technology, and multiple inputs/outputs — including HDMI ARC — the K19 supports native playback of audio files up to 768kHz 32Bit PCM/DSD512. With its dual 8-channel THX AAA788+ amplification, the K19 is able to effortlessly power headphones with a wide impedance range - delivering up to an impressive 8000mW of power output.
8 channels though????
Oh wait it's dual-8 channel

Chat can i remove switches from here do I need to remove the plate
or for just driving tons of dacs that are tuned for differente freqencyes
I believe so
it is easier to remove the switches if you remove the plate
although if you're only swapping out a few a switch puller will do just fine

for all the germans here. a really interesting talk about surface notebooks and potential hazards for electronics attached via USB
Aaaaand with that said warp-terminal is permanently gone from my PC
To not support middle click paste in a terminal smh my head, back to Yakuake it seems
i guess macos has a lucky break with copy/paste cause cmd+c and cmd+v works fine as its not ctrl
Linux forums are something else
Something something, mind hacking.
Idk neural tech just seems inherently a privacy breach
Im in ur ear, reading ur thots
Invasive neural tech imo should be illegal in non-medical scenarios
I mean you have a smartphone with you at any time basically
At least it doesn't know what I think every microsecond
but yea we live in a time where countries are proposing laws to get you in prison eternally for saying "the wrong thing" on the internet without clear definitions
Which is inherently anti-human lol
Thankfully lawyers exist, and there's nothing they hate more than "without clear definitions"
Meh whatever, there's a good saying in my country, "you will lie in your bed the way you made it"
If we are so intent of destroying our society then, meh, not my business
Neural tech though is a particular threat cause eventually we will be implanted on birth per laws just to keep everyone in line
Should be a global ban outside of medical cases
imo it should at least need a physical on/off switch that striahgt up cuts power to it
I am glad neural tech can bring disabled their functions back
But "augmenting" humans? Hell no
Madlads added Ray-tracing to lavapipe
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Mesa-Lavapipe-Vulkan-RayTracing
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/25616
Lavapipe?
CPU-based graphics driver on Linux
Software rendering mostly
I suppose that's useful for.. ehh..
Non-hardware-accelerated applications?
Browsers and stuff?
browsers are hardware accelerated
Useful for old legacy stuff and fallback when GPU is not available, it's usually pretty basic driver
Now they slapped RT on top of that
Seems rather useless
in 10 years you might think, oh im glad they have software raytracing so i can run this old shit on my new hardware where they dont support this old shit anymore
i’ve already accepted that sooner or later people will have no choice but to get an implant anyways
what’s the alternative? being a comparatively “worse human”?
On a more serious note, yeah
Such an augmentation will become the mark of a more capable human within a society
na it will be more like someone with fake lashes using Iphone
guys is tachyon mode just buggy ? sometimes my keyboard just presses random keys by itself
@karmic hedge did you order the ifixit thing yet?
i remembered they have a better kit than the mako kit which is the pro tech toolkit (best would be the right to repair edition due to some extra tools) as it includes spudgers, suction cups, esd wrist band and all such for opening smaller devices that dont just fall apart without screws and need some prying.
comes with a mako kit ofc
they also offer a fabric roll for this kit where you basically get a nice rollable carry case for all the tools so they stash away nice
Actually I ordered the red one I sent you yesterday a few hours ago
Because I got the whole set for 27€ incl. shipping and ifixit parts seem to have shippingcost whereever I order it and are generally a bit more expensive
I'm willing to try out the quality of the EZARC product, if its terrible I can just RMA
I love Linux sometimes
I had to update PC and KDE6 broke half of my configuration and bindings, cool!
Also wallpaper-engine plugin stopped working, and I can't change wallpaper at all, neat!
Glad I'm planned to do fresh install tomorrow regardless
You know what?
Time to make up with GNOME, I'll miss wallpaper-engine a bit, but there's so many useful extensions there, that I want to try again
yeah tbh i think i prefer gnome more too
tho not that im really using linux that much anyway, but KDE just has so many issues with compositing and wayland, etc
Allegedly Plasma 6 that just dropped this week fixes a lot of wayland issues
Wayland was one of their main focuses
How do I downgrade to 5?
Involuntarily
There is some bugs still 😅 maybe wait a few weeks
I just did pacman -Syu as one does, and ended up with broken desktop ;-;
Lanaaaaa
Is there a way to run wallpaper engine on GNOME?
windows vm :>
I found this repo, dunno if it works, time to find out https://github.com/Almamu/linux-wallpaperengine
Anyone recommend some good keycaps or got some links wanting to swap mine out
its out now
Look around here https://www.alexotos.com/keyboard-vendor-list/
ive seen this link twice now but never found the section to buy any caps

I am done.
Fuck KDE 6
New KDE needs backend for phonon-qt6, and there's no phonon-qt6-gstreamer, no phonon-qt6-mpv
Only phonon-qt6-vlc
And it automatically replaced my default video app from mpv to vlc
👏 indeed fuck Linux
Fuck kde in general
DANGGGGG
just over 500£ for that?
UK, calm your booba
this, that last point, that is utterly unforgivable, genuine "time to buy mac" moment
it is always a time to buy mac moment

unironically such a great OS
great hardware as well
I'll deffo do a hackintosh one day, if hardware and software compatibility will allow so once more
If only Apple wasn't so anti-repair and anti-consumer
I don't mind macOS though
one thing that annoyed me when i had a mac was how hard it was to clean the screen lol

Clean the screen?
yes, fingerprints and other smudges really took some time clean

though im not sure how thats much of a news piece given how they are the only ones that could fulfill the criteria since tsmc and samsung aren't quite an american company lol
@ashen spindle Yeah intel can keep failing a lot for USgov to stop caring about them
yeah and they dont need the most bleeding edge chips so they have time enough to make the nodes work
Well thats only good bc this is super important for them as a company
tablet review featuring cat butt xd
lemme clear my browser history then I can walk you through the OS

Here's a little exclusive of my fluffer, just for you
heyyy can i get some help
Enough of #🐱│pets for now
Yeah, call 911, or visit a local GP they will be there to assist you
@umbral heron how did you get plasma so early??
Usually Arch suspends major desktop updates for at least a week or two
I did pacman -Syu
[2024-03-07T15:58:39+0100] [ALPM] upgraded plasma-meta (5.27-4 -> 6.0-2)
There's no plasma5-meta unfortunately ;-;
Are you on testing repo?
Nope - core, extra and multilib
It's already 6.0-2 in extra anyways https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/plasma-meta/
They usually do
And they should, until more qt6 backends are available
And not force vlc for both video and audio
FINALLY

AMD GPU perform better on Linux due to better mesa drivers and shit
read again what I said
Still, their mobile GPUs aren't... great
In terms of what?
doesnt matter if they get a bigger boost they just arent great
power efficency, performance, compatibility
Hmm
including their smart shift or whatever it was not working great, where it dynamically regulates power if you have amd+amd
Are the web apps you can make in Safari on a Mac isolated from the main browser window?
Also
$1300 for a laptop with 8gb ram and 128GB storage is fucking absurd
Especially when it's $400 extra to get 16 and 256GB .-.
Apple need to stop claiming to be pro when you can't do pro shit with their base config
Don't worry - 8GB on Mac is the same as 16GB on other laptops
trying 6.8 rc cachyos LTO kernel tomorrow, for those 1-2 extra frames wooo
Well, it is more efficient than Windows im sure but still absurd
Huh?
try cachyos kernel gamers, it's fucking good
x86_64 v3 repo? no problem
link time optimizations? there u go
nvidia modules included? HELL YEA
But... I have AMD GPU
friendly community of turbo nerds too, they like fun and provide windows 10 fonts so you don't have to have an iso even
(its an arch repo but they have a distro too)
really feel like I'm getting whiplash here sometimes, is this macos 8gb talk related to the video from hours ago or did the amd linux laptop mention it
Nah
My YouTube is cluttered with videos about the new M3 MacBook Air
Which is 1300 for 8gb and 128gb storage which is fucking garbage for that price
They can set RAM prices as high as they want, since they embed it in SoC...
Oh
It's 256gb base
Still bad
yeah same as the m1 and m2
Yeh :/
no part of the base spec improved since m1 introduction
including the soc itself for the most part lol
Also what genius thought about separating SSD controller from memory dies
in theory you can gain benefits from it
in practice all it does is making it unrepairable
I looked if I have some apple memes that are appropriate but there is just nothing, I have nothing to say lawl
What happened to keeb talk
the discord server is refocusing to linux talk
Archived
keeb 60he and I think one other got archived
keebs_talk, 60he and uwu channels
Most of the stuff from there belong either in general or community_support anyway
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/visionos-1-1-tries-to-make-personas-less-unsettling-plus-other-apple-os-updates/ this will be interesting to follow
just to see how much they can improve on the negatives with just software changes
I thought callum moved things around again
Oh, just noticed I have this funny useless slider in tray
Maybe it's not useless
Some monitors allow that
Apparently
Useless in my case though
Blessed be heavens! https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/phonon-qt6-mpv-git

More about making it just how I like it, nice and clean
MPV MASTER RACE
I have a strange issue with mpv on fedora though
It doesn't have window decorations and I can't resize it because of that
And the window is flat with no shadow when focused
It's really strange
But the app works fine other than that
mpv is faster, with wider device and codec support natively, as well as some more high performance options (i use multi GB caching for all videos)
it also has far and away the best hdr support ive found in a video player
highly debatable
its the only video player ive ever used that hasnt messed up either conversion
and also hasnt messed up either native
Indubitably
if you have the money... i can only say sure its overpriced but the experience is still great except maybe 1 or 2 hiccups i had over the past 2 and something years
isolated in what way
they are their own window but nothing more
not that safari is good anyway
use arc on mac and be happy
KDE 6 "working as intended" pt.3 - if you disable floating panels, then there's a gap between maximized window and panel
that's what you get for using plasma!
and yeah apex ran just fine on proton experimental bleeding edge, it ran just fine on latest proton 8 before the update
Used 8.0 before too, I dunno what they've changed that it stopped working, but I guess we will get hotfix soon so it'll work back there again
If your login to account in the website will you go logged in when you visit that site in the main Safari window?
Same for extensions
It completely ignores panel height
Always maximizes window with 64px gap from the top of the screen
peeps like to bitch about gnome shell.. but its working, and isnt rewritten every year :p
I'm doing the whole spring cleaning today, and switching to GNOME then
Just waiting till SSD arrives
8gb isn't great on MacBooks
idk works fine for me
compiling and running stuff
while browsing and watching videos etc
i only have issue with the compile time and time it takes to run code test suites
i have the m1 air and it's the best laptop i ever had the chance to come by
the most basic cheapest model too
i really dont know why people hate on it just cause it doesnt have 16gb of ram... its not a gaming machine
for longevity i understand 16gb of ram, but i will just buy a new model by that time
well even with longevity in mind... apple can optimize anything for these
the same way they optimize iOS for their phones and tablets
but yeah by the time this doesnt get updates anymore itll still work fine for general use and i will prob have replaced it long ago
well as i said its overpriced yes but its also the best experience i ever had with any device period
sans icloud even
It should be 16gb, 8gb is just not enough, idk what you're doing on yours but all I ever hear from people is complaints and I've seen it in person how awful it can be.
Don’t need 16gb just for gaming but the issue is that 8gb of ram cost apple maybe 20$ at most and they charge like 200 for it
currently im doing a chrome browser with over 50 tabs, 3 visual studio code windows with 3 node servers running, fork (git client), navicat pro, 2 terminals, slack app, discord app, gather app, postman app, obsidian app and mail
If it was a reasonable pricing option it would be fine
Pricing was already a scam there for more ram
like i already said overpriced yes
but i cant say i ever had any issue just because of ram
my main issue if anything is cpu power
Sure but that goes hand in hand, for some people it’s fine, for some it’s not and then you are forced to buy overpriced upgrades so the base price isn’t really what you can get it for anymore especially with some models where more memory comes with a forced chip upgrade
Like when I can buy single unit 8gb lpddr4x for 10 bucks apple quantities would be low single digit cost
i cant complain i paid like 750
Oh yeah you can get a good deal on it, still valid to complain though that they cheap out on a piece that makes it not fine for a lot of users to milk them more
no one said its not valid. callum claims its crappy to use with 8gb
when in fact its not
on 8gb ram???
I was using 9gb ram last night on my laptop with IntelliJ, Discord, youtube music, firefox, 4 PDF files open and a bunch of file managers open
Swap goes brrrrr
Overall 8gb isn't that bad on macs sure
im on Linux xd
But it's still not hard to run into issues and I personally won't ever go with 8gb
Which is also kinda shit at it
the only way i can see me running into issues is gaming, heavy video editing or otherwise extremely ram intensive tasks
cant imagine anyone with general compute needs running into issues
im currently at 19gb used
