it's a lot more terrorists than that...funnily enough
Hamas' militant and political wings have tens of thousands at minimum

fickle ore
#

you'd only nuke under existential threat, that's the use case of a smaller defending country with nukes. Now they have none and USA bailed on them.

astral haven
#

but there is no threat

fickle ore
#

wat

astral haven
#

russia cant nuke ukr, and ukr cant nuke russia
the tech to asymmetrically nuke isnt there yet, and if you launch, everyone else launches

fickle ore
#

that doesnt sound right

halcyon moss
#

and mined

astral haven
#

yup, as much as the ukranians arent happy about it, the us is focused on dealing immense economic damage to russia rather than getting the land back

thick elk
#

It's quite simple with nukes, neither Russia nor Putin thinks they have anything to gain with launching nukes, therefore they won't launch nukes.
Breaking Nuclear taboo is a big thing, and small nukes won't significantly help the war effort.
Nuclear powers have a vested interest in keeping the Nuclear taboo intact, especially China. Last thing they want is every country around them that doesn't have nukes to suddenly build up an arsenal.

astral haven
#

money markets for that sort of stuff would be very nice to have, manifold exists but it doesnt have real stakes

astral haven
thick elk
#

I wouldn't bet on any outcome in that regard, the definition of war ends is also vague.
I don't think Ukraine can militarily kick Russia out of the Donbas at least not anytime soon, but Russia could at some point just stop the war, they are free to retreat back to the border.
After all, the Taliban also could not defeat the US army.

fickle ore
#

ofc russia dont want to nuke

#

but ukr having them would be a big deterrent

astral haven
#

how

thick elk
#

Not that much at this point, but it would deter any action that existentially threaten Ukraine. Only to be used in an otherwise hopeless situation.

#

I don't think Russia would get to that point regardless though.

fickle ore
astral haven
#

dag

#

is there any scenario where ukraine is better off at the end by having nukes?

thick elk
#

I think he aims at a scenario where Ukraine always had nukes and Russia refraining from taking the actions they are taking since 2014 / 2022

astral haven
#

sure, but nukes dont change anything there

fickle ore
#

Yeah it might've prevented their war in the first place. Do some cost benefit analysis and it may have been too expensive for Russia to try it, and the numbers would've been more favourable vs another country without nukes.

astral haven
#

what scenario exists where ukraine still exists after using nukes

fickle ore
#

It doesnt need to, they are acting as deterrent

astral haven
#

what are they deterring against?

fickle ore
#

opportunity cost

astral haven
#

the only scenario i see where the russians are worse off thanks to ukraine having nukes is if ukraine nukes themselves

tranquil snow
#

free palestine

thick elk
#

Hey, at least it's not meme_rage tonight

fickle ore
#

waiting... for nvidia earnings

astral haven
#

the problem is the opportunity cost for ukraine is infinite, where ukraine is too close to russia and too small to make the OC for russia to be infinite

Why is Nautilus' file search like the best in any Linux file manager???

I remember seeing the dev blogs for InstantWM

20a and 18a this year? and what products are intel 16?
and the pte lettering? why...

ashen spindle
#

no just 20a this year

#

for products at least

astral haven
#

i wonder what products will actually come out on foundry

ashen spindle
#

well 20a will have some leftover skus of arrow lake

#

or if you mean on foundry as in products from external ones

#

well last I remember is the qualcomm 18A deal not happening after all lol

astral haven
#

doesnt surprise me lol

#

some bleeding edge switching and routing chips would be cool

#

native optical switch chips hype

ashen spindle
#

would be nice

#

but until we get the first foundry product that isnt a meme I'm skeptical

crisp granite
#

Let’s see what happens

#

After hours are going well

#

But what about tomorrow

ashen spindle
#

this is the one im most curious about

#

if we will get 10nm round 3 or intel leapfrogging

astral haven
#

ye, hi na isnt as crazy as the jump to euv itself, but its still a big jump

ashen spindle
#

for nvidia it is a bigger step dogekek

#

or should I say a half as big step since it halves reticle limit so they are forced to make smaller dies by then

astral haven
#

h300super ti is going to be stitched for sure

#

the question is how are they stitching exactly

wheat plume
#

🤤

ashen spindle
#

and how will they do it on consumer chips

#

will we get a meh rdna3 equivalent, something better or much worse

astral haven
#

🤷 will they even bother with consumer any more?

ashen spindle
#

always a chance sure but I don't see them dropping that market this decade

#

but that's just pure speculation because so much could happen till then still

astral haven
#

yea

#

very wide apertures are expensive tho, and its exponential with both aperture ratio and diameter

#

if they are stuck making chips less than 300mm2 they just will...

#

but on the other hand we heard a bunch about chiplets so we shall see

ashen spindle
#

heard yes but unlike amd not seen any yet

steep creek
astral haven
#

its just early

#

prior to the advertised yield

steep creek
#

Oh I see

ashen spindle
#

basically as early as you can work on a full wafer without tricks around it

astral haven
#

so yes the risk is higher, to some extent?

#

but apple makes iphone cpus on risk production sometimes

ashen spindle
#

before risk production you might be able to make a chip on the wafer but not a full wafer of it

steep creek
#

Sorta like a trial run, the process before risk I guess?

#

Makes sense though ^^

ashen spindle
#

for the most part its when you can start making chips on the node, though usually wiht lower yield and not really for mass production yet

#

so you'd do engineering samples there

#

but it's all very vague for us on the outside what steps happens when exactly

steep creek
#

I see, but I guess the general concept of risk production is what you explained

steep creek
astral haven
#

well they are?

ashen spindle
#

they are and pre production of a chip isn't always overlapping with a new node

#

so if the node running and you do a chip on it you can make it as soon as you are happy, and you can design the chip and have test vehicles before the entire node can work on the wafer

steep creek
#

Oh yeah my bad I’m mixing things now

#

I appreciate the explanation ^^

#

Reminds me last year, my professor which was a former engineer at intel told me sometimes they used to test cpus on fpgas during late development

ashen spindle
#

yeah engingeering chips have fpgas or parts like it on board so they can try different things without refabbing an entire new chip

#

the amd tour of gamernexus covered that part a bit when they talked about the upbringing of zen1

steep creek
#

I should check that video out don’t think I watched the whole of it

astral haven
#

fpga part is more for the design of the cores and the logic than the design of the node

ashen spindle
#

ye

steep creek
#

Yep

ashen spindle
#

though now that DTCO is becoming a bigger part I'd assume that also is melting together so you can also just test two things from a node instead of two designs

#

50% of the density of N3 scomes from dtco according to tsmc so the co design for the products is becoming insanely important

steep creek
#

Yea I would assume testing now is much more advanced than back then, early 90’s to 2000’s ish

astral haven
#

im pretty sure that the semi industry is moving faster than the test equipment can, id be impressed if they were even able to do the same testing they did back then

#

if they can, it is probably intensely more expensive

#

resolution of microscopes has increased what 2x? in the same time that transistor density has gone up 1000x?

ashen spindle
#

lots of stuff going to simulation, some ancient tools probably still have the UI from 1990 though

astral haven
#

yea, fix the error in sim rather than reality

ashen spindle
#

nice anecdote, amd said the vcache server chips were the best thing they ever made to make chips faster lol so sometimes you have advancements to get your next advancement sooner

astral haven
#

ye!

ashen spindle
#

god I hate that they didnt just put this stream on youtube

#

why do so many companies feel the need to host on their own sites still

#

mostly because I was looking for something and not have 2x speed is making this take forever zzz

astral haven
#

ive seen some folks with universal video 2x plugins in their browser, but i havent bothered to figure them out yet

ashen spindle
#

yeah some might work but then it wont for something else etc.

#

just dualstream it if you want your own website zzz

astral haven
#

some exec wants to get their moneys worth for the cisco video streaming box or whoever they got

ashen spindle
#

maybe they should tell cisco unless they fab something they wont use them or something

astral haven
#

nah its not ciscos fault, the exec probably bought it for a bajillion bucks and wants to get the moneys worth

ashen spindle
#

im jsut trying to find where pat talked about wanting to get lisa to fab on intel

#

to get the context exactly

#

eh fuck it im not bothering with this player

steep creek
ashen spindle
#

intle foundry connect

steep creek
#

This was at IFS direct connect I believe

ashen spindle
#

ye it overlaps but separate events

steep creek
#

Ah

ashen spindle
#

toms is also fine for the most part if you check and the author isnt mathew

#

would be really funny if Ms stays customer, licenses zen/rdna for next gen xbox and then fabs it on intel lol

ashen spindle
#

god that would make some of the weird fanboys on twitter mald so badly

steep creek
#

He seems very optimistic about it, well I don’t mind the competition haha

#

“Intel is opening its doors to the industry at large with the goal of being 'the world's foundry,' and Gelsinger has previously stated his desire to work with everyone in the industry and named names.”

ashen spindle
#

I guess since amd has bought xilinx and pensando those might make sense to fab on intel if price/volume fits

#

no risk of IP theft if its products that intel doesnt make

astral haven
#

what

#

did altera go away or something?

ashen spindle
#

I mean kinda

#

remember they are spinning of PSG

astral haven
#

right i forgot

steep creek
#

The fpga software still exists I guess but don’t know anything beyond that

astral haven
#

but still suing based on that would be so intensely easy that there wouldnt be any point

ashen spindle
#

its funny though literally talked to someone earlier today who had worked on altera things in school and didnt look at the hardware side in 10 years and didnt know any of this happened when I said altera is kidna dead lol

steep creek
#

lol

ashen spindle
#

and 9 years ago or so intel ate it and now they are spitting it out again

steep creek
#

When we worked with quartus last year, lots of menus in the program were still just named altera, modelsim too

#

Guess they don’t care much about renaming it that much

ashen spindle
#

but yeah fair point they do still kinda own it but unlike cpus/gpus that would be more something that I could see being made on intel

#

if it's just some DPU that just needs volume

astral haven
#

but also lets be clear, intel does use networking ip directly

#

xeon d has native phys for very high speed stuffs

ashen spindle
#

do they have anything like the ma35d?

astral haven
#

you mean the one built into every cpu?

ashen spindle
#

dedicated add in variants not the decoders in cpus

astral haven
#

nay they killed that product line years back

#

but its still ip that does go into their cpus

ashen spindle
#

yeah but something like that sounds possible for amd to put on intel fabs

astral haven
#

sure but it wouldnt be any different than a cpu or gpu

ashen spindle
#

more wont happen till they are a entirely separate company and pat isnt in charge

#

ehh I mean if it's used for packaging or some based tiles or some chiplets with not that important ip I could see it happen

astral haven
#

i can see it happening for mainline cpus if the node is good or cheap enough

ashen spindle
#

not while its not a legally separate entity and tsmc isnt massively fumbling

gusty kiln
#

damn RTX video enhancement uses like 70-80W

astral haven
#

eh, i suspect if intel is cheap enough, and sufficiently integrated to eda tools, and they give a good enough deal, amd will switch even if intel is slower

astral haven
gusty kiln

I still don’t know what you are trying to do so I literally can’t answer it

crimson wigeon
#

Unfortunately, I can't definitively tell you whether you should enable or disable DTS SMM on your laptop without more information. Here's why:

What is DTS SMM?

DTS SMM stands for Digital Thermal Sensor System Management Mode. It's a technology on some Intel processors that allows the operating system to access more granular temperature readings directly from the CPU's internal sensors. This can potentially lead to more accurate and responsive fan control.

Factors to consider:

Your laptop model and BIOS version: Different laptops and BIOS versions may implement DTS SMM differently.
Your operating system: Not all operating systems fully support DTS SMM.
Your cooling system: If your laptop has a good cooling system and you're not experiencing thermal throttling, enabling DTS SMM might not make a significant difference.
Your thermal preferences: Some users prefer quieter fans even if it means slightly higher temperatures, while others prioritize keeping their CPU as cool as possible.

What you can do:

Consult your laptop's manual or manufacturer's website: See if they offer any specific guidance on DTS SMM for your model.
Search online forums: Look for discussions about DTS SMM on forums specific to your laptop model or brand.
Experiment: Try enabling and disabling DTS SMM to see if you notice any difference in performance, temperatures, or fan noise.

Additional notes:

Enabling DTS SMM might slightly increase power consumption.
Disabling DTS SMM might make your fan control less responsive, especially under heavy load.

I hope this information helps!

how do I do that...does firefox also have a --window-size launch flag like Chrome?

wheat plume
crimson wigeon

That sure is a bad name if one wants to easily find it in a search engine

fair gull
wheat plume

idk, to enable highlighting for .zshrc in nano I had to include the sh file

fair gull
#

pretty sure nano has specific aliasing on how to treat .zshrc and such

wheat plume
#

added this to .nanorc

fair gull
#

the list of how to determine syntax highlighting is:

  1. just look at file extension
  2. look at magic bytes if available
  3. analyze file and try to determine the syntax highlighting
fair gull
wheat plume
#

yeh its the one for sh

imma file it one sec

    }
}
cursive summit
#

Tbf Nvidia's GPU controls were so convoluted that it's insane

#

You have the ancient looking app

#

And the new one

fair gull
#

no now someone could pass a negative number

#

and then your factorial function doesnt work

#

cause youd have to add to negative numbers

ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

then how would you refactor it?

ashen spindle
cursive summit
fair gull
#

no

ashen spindle
#

no that would still break it

fair gull
#
private static int factorial(int n) {
    if (n >  0) {
        return n * factorial(n -  1);
    } else {
        return  1;
    }
}
#

if you wanna correctly handle negative factorials you could implement that but most people dont need any negative factorials

#

(mainly cause its not defined behaviour)

astral haven
#

i mean imaginary numbers are "defined"

fair gull
#

yes but there is no defined factorial function for negative numbers

#

the only implementation ive seen strips the sign, does the factorial and then adds the sign back

astral haven
#

thats probably the least awful way to handle things

fair gull
#

its better than someone i saw posting a float factorial where you specify step size

#

especially fun since computers are so good with floats

astral haven
#

ikr
i started looking into the math theory of negative factorial and i think its better that it just be 1

fair gull
#

i think so too

#

if you wanna get really fancy you can just do a ternary for that function as well

astral haven
#

In mathematics, the gamma function (represented by Γ, the capital letter gamma from the Greek alphabet) is one commonly used extension of the factorial function to complex numbers. The gamma function is defined for all complex numbers except the non-positive integers. For every positive integer n,
Derived by Daniel Bernoulli, for complex numbe...

fair gull
wheat plume
#

o.o

#

wut dat

#

ternary... never saw this before

fair gull
#

although youd probably want to look into big integers for factorials as they explode fast

wheat plume
#

oh wait, I saw this before in JS

#

and my Android app I used it too to check which radio button was selected xd

fair gull
#

well in JS you can really golf factorials

wheat plume
#

you can really what?

fair gull
#
const factorial = (n) => !n || n * factorial(n-1);
#

code golfing it making code as small as possible

ashen spindle
#

aka usually bad practice for junior roles because it makes it less readable

fair gull
#

actually

fair gull
#
const factorial = (n) => +(!n || n * factorial(n-1));

is more complete as it converts anything below and including 0 to 1

fair gull
#

compilers break it down no matter how i write it and make it perform probably exactly the same

wheat plume
#

so knowing how to do this is basically show off points?

fair gull
#

code golfing in my experience is more of a fun activity these days to flex knowledge on languages

wheat plume
#

YEAH LOL

fair gull
#

not really show off points but usually involves deep knowledge of languages to optimize code to a point where it cant be shorter

wheat plume
#

fair

wheat plume
fair gull
#

how so

wheat plume
#

I know what it does but not how this syntax works

#

how do you pass a number to this?

fair gull
#
function factorial(n) {
  if (n > 0) {
    return n * factorial(n-1);
  } else {
    return 1;
  }
}

is the exact same code but !n in the small version basically converts the number into a bool meaning 0 or smaller is false otherwise true which gets inverted by the ! in front giving us true for 0 or smaller and false for the rest. if its false then the || gets run and thus calculates n (a number bigger than 0) times itself - 1 given to the factorial function (this way we cant multiply anything by 0 or a negative number). the worst part is the +(...) which in js gets interpreted as +number so true gets converted back to 1 instead of printing true

#

the right way to do the +(...) thing would be Number(...) but thats more characters than +
