#

name a single car that supports j3400 "nacs"

steep creek
#

pretty sure there is no standard as of today, maybe when everyone switches to nacs there will be

astral haven
#

nah j3400 exists

#

but you are correct, there is not a single car on the road that supports it

#

no, tesla doesnt support nacs yet

warped gull
#

Tesla is NACS lol.

astral haven
#

nope

#

nacs is j3400

#

tesla has their own protocol for their own vehicles

#

while j3400 is compatible with nacs, as of today, teslas are not

#

including the cybertruck

#

OOS went to one of the charging manufacturers trying to deploy a real j3400 implementation, plugged in their cybertruck and it didnt work

warped gull
astral haven
#

thats great and all, but just because people confuse two terms, doesnt mean they are the same

steep creek
#

one thing i can say with certainty, i wont be missing chademo lol

#

rarely fast charge anyways but the few times i do its a hassle

astral haven
#

yea i didnt even bother getting a car with a chademo port

astral haven
#

plenty of chargers around for me tho lel

#

and all of them always charge full speed

steep creek
#

leafs here are all on chademo except maybe the newest one, ariya switched to ccs

astral haven
#

on the older leafs, chademo was an option

#

you could chose to not get a fast charging port

steep creek
#

yea there are enough chademo chargers here its just weird with two different types of ports on every station lol

#

ah i see

#

yea the old 24kwh leaf i had was actually imported from cali, wouldn't want to do that again

#

somehow it had rapid charging and chademo

astral haven
#

Yea that's pretty normal

#

I just didn't want to pay the extra grand to option thay

steep creek
#

thats fair

astral haven
#

And I don't like leather seats but I wanted the 360 cameras

steep creek
#

exact same i so prefer the fabric ones, i got 360 too on this one, just missing out on the bose speaker system and a few other things ill never use

astral haven
#

What

#

Oh a newer model?

steep creek
#

yea have the 62kwh now

astral haven
#

Ah

#

Yea on the 2013, it was all tied together

steep creek
#

yeah i remember, uncle had the leather option with the upgraded screen, while ours was a non touch type display

fickle ore
#

I bought a f150 lightning electrical

steep creek
#

in hindsight maybe it'd be better to upgrade because of the heatpump, thing barely kept us warm in the winter

fickle ore
#

Love it

steep creek
#

awesome

astral haven
#

Big gaping hole where chademo would have gone

steep creek
#

ah yeah thats how it looked like

astral haven
#

But you can see I have the 360 there too

#

A Very strange config lel

steep creek
#

lol 360 is really nice though, makes parking a lot easier

#

do you have blindspot detection too?

astral haven
#

Nay

steep creek
#

ah

astral haven
#

That wasn't an option yet

steep creek
#

i see

astral haven
#

Very sad that the aptera won't have a 360 cam option

steep creek
#

oh wow, maybe it'll come later on? i hope so

astral haven
#

Maybe

#

But later on means 2026 at the earliest

steep creek
#

i dont know if i can go back now, having tried a 360 cam

astral haven
#

Same

steep creek
#

well i dont know when exactly aptera is set to launch but possibly in 25, so not too far away from 26

fickle ore
#

me parking my f150 confidently

steep creek
#

this looks oddly american, that sign is in english isnt it lol

astral haven
warped gull
steep creek
astral haven
#

Same

#

They are launching with 45kwh now confirmed

steep creek
#

nice, dont think the aptera is a car that needs super fast charging anyways

unkempt lake
#

Or did you get a pickup for no reason

#

Like do you have an atv or a snowmobile?

fickle ore
#

I cant imagine other car

unkempt lake
#

Too many people buy pick up trucks to never haul anything

#

Or put anything in the bed

astral haven
fickle ore
steep creek
warped gull
steep creek
#

charging is plenty, thats around my home charging stations speed, charges up just fine overnight

warped gull
#

Just hauled 400lbs worth of mulch for the yard last week. 😂

fickle ore
fickle ore
warped gull
#

Im sure you can, but i mean motorized dirtbike, so no lol

halcyon moss
#

Not dirtbikes

fickle ore
#

Yea

#

And I couldnt fit a 65" tv on my old car

astral haven
#

Or you have a bed to stand on lel

halcyon moss
#

Or not a high car

#

Those are super common in nl.

#

If it's weekend, kinda decent weather and you're on a highway.. You see lots, with 2 bikes. Electric bikes usually

zen 6 🤨

ashen spindle
#

yeah zen5 is just the same packaging wise

#

that is just waiting to be released

#

6 will not use the same io die or packaging anymore

mild dome
#

Hearing about Zen 6 makes me want to delay the upgrade I am planning from Zen 3 5900X to Zen 5's x800X3D
However no doubt then Zen 7 will be on the horizon

ashen spindle
#

5 x3d likely isn't out till Q1 next year

#

6 is in 2026

#

also 6 could be on a new platform that costs more

#

and internally they are working on zen 8/9 so feel free to wait till next decade xD

thick elk
#

I would not fixate on one generation / chip. Just wait for it to happen. I remember waiting for Bulldozer and get a 3570k instead. Whenever you feel a sufficient leap has been made and the need arises, it's time to upgrade.

ashen spindle
#

yeah in the end even the most accurate leak is just a leak

#

and even lets say zen5 is 50% better, the price might make you still not want it xD

#

mostly should be used to gauge if it makes sense to wait some weeks if you aren't in a hurry to upgrade

thick elk
#

Either way generally over the last 2 generations the x3d chips have proven to be worth the wait but even that is not certain to always hold true.

ashen spindle
#

well the only thing that could happen here is the base version is soo good the x3d bonus isn't worth to wait for xD

#

if the base ipc only improves a little bit the cache will still lift the same amount

thick elk
#

That does not mean the price will be right though

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah

thick elk
#

Worst case: china attacks taiwan and we get the mother of all chip shortages

ashen spindle
#

think then we have slightly more issues than just a new pc xD

thick elk
#

Not likely but just to name an extreme

#

I am just saying it, there are always outside factors that can happen too. Natural dissasters, booms and so forth.

ashen spindle
#

yeah but then you can also start thinking about how that affects your ability to get bread next week so it's not really worth considering after all xD

cursive summit
thick elk
#

Maybe but noticable shocks have been somewhat common in some regularity, so it is something to take into account looking further into the future.

ashen spindle
cursive summit
#

I mean, my platform do you mean AM6 or so or 700 series chipset

#

AM5 will prolly survive till Zen 7

ashen spindle
#

am6, am5+ idk something new

#

lol no chance

cursive summit
#

AM4 lasted 4 generations-ish

#

3 + 1 refresh

ashen spindle
#

ok but that's not really relevant

#

if they need a new socket for technical reasons it doesnt matter if the previous socket had 17 gens

cursive summit
#

They did promise longevity with AM5, so I expect at least 2 more arches on AM5

ashen spindle
#

they promised support through 2025

thick elk
#

I do believe AMD sees value in keeping the platform for as long as possible. It certainly hasn't hurt their sales.
Board partners also seem on-board with continuing to sell old motherboards.
But yea once there are good technical reasons to switch they will.

ashen spindle
#

it helps but if they make a new platform and then show improvements people arent going to be as mad as intel where new platform but new gen is just the same happened so often

#

but there is just 0 chance zen7 is still on the same platform xD

cursive summit
#

Well Zen 7 prolly not

thick elk
#

Of course, it's not just about people being mad, it's about it generally boosting sales.
Older people upgrading cpu's longer motherboard production runs lowering costs and so forth.
DDR6 seems like such a point where moving to a new chipset makes sense, as AMD has generally preferred a clean switch over supporting 2 versions at the same time.

cursive summit
#

Zen 4, 5 and 6 I hope will be on AM5

ashen spindle
#

z6 would fall into the ddr6 release time so that would be one reason

cursive summit
#

Wasn't it a while after DDR5 was released that it was even adopted?

ashen spindle
#

it just depends on how it's designed for

velvet radish
#

Wtf is zen guys

#

is that short for ryzen?

#

im so confused

cursive summit
#

is that bait?

#

GDDR7 is already in production, and rumours are that RDNA4 will not use GDDR7

#

Tech just takes a while to adopt

ashen spindle
#

Zen {number} is the micro architechture of the ryzen chips

velvet radish
cursive summit
#

And I don't think DDR6 is yet released or I haven't heard of it, so when it goes into mass prod it's like what, +2-3 years until a motherboard with such support comes out?

ashen spindle
#

that doesn't matter if rdna4 was designed so the extra gains from gddr7 wouldn't be worth the delay they wont use it

#

if zen6 is made with new IO design and would benefit from ddr6 it could be worth adding some months of validation for it

cursive summit
#

Just stack the DDR6 on the CPU 😄

#

Preferably HBM3e but I suppose DDR can work too

ashen spindle
#

why would you want hbm on your cpu

#

do you want slower cpus

cursive summit
#

Cause HBM3 is extremely fast?

#

Faster than DDR I think

ashen spindle
#

it has high bandwidth that's the name

#

it doesn't have low latency

cursive summit
#

Would you be able to make it low latency by stacking it on top of the CPU die?

ashen spindle
#

you would be able to make it overheat the chip below it quite fast

cursive summit
#

Cause it'd be kinda cool to have a combined CPU - RAM - GPU - VRAM product

#

But you'd prolly need it to be threadripper sized

ashen spindle
#

in fantasy world maybe not in whats possible with physics

cursive summit
#

Well, Strix Halo is already halfway into that

#

Wait a second, what will Strix Halo's VRAM be

#

It's not going to have any on its die so nothing fast like GDDR6

ashen spindle
#

lpddr

cursive summit
#

So it'll just take VRAM from the RAM like a normal iGPU?

#

But that's far slower than GDDR

ashen spindle
#

it's a normal apu just bigger

cursive summit
#

Memory bandwidth will definitely be a major bottleneck

#

Strix Halo could be a product that would have great benefit from on-die VRAM

ashen spindle
#

probably not

cursive summit
#

Thought it doesn't have to be stacked on top

#

What if it's kinda chiplet-like

ashen spindle
#

it's still an apu not a flagship that is memory starved

cursive summit
#

It'll have an insane amount of GPU CUs on the level of mid-range GPUs

#

VRAM speed at that point seems like a major concern

#

LPDDR5X isn't that fast

ashen spindle
#

you also arent going to clock it like a dgpu if the entire chip has a lower tdp than navi33

#

n33 is 190w

cursive summit
#

It's like 40W-120W

ashen spindle
#

and that isn't really a bandwidth starved gpu

#

so you lower it by 70W, then you remove the power used by the other parts of the SOC

#

and you end wiht like half the power budget

cursive summit
#

I suppose if 780M can play games at 1080p medium at acceptable framerates, just slapping 4x more CUs could push it to 1440p high

#

Strix Halo is just super exciting, even if it's a mobile product for whatever reason

#

There's a market for APUs that are that strong, they could make a lot of money by selling one for 400ish

ashen spindle
#

the laptops it will be in will be a lot more so it's worth it for that, then if that sells you will see more

#

but just like the current 8700g and co, for desktop it's cheaper to get a dgpu at that level still

cursive summit
#

Even if it's mobile only, some peeps will still stick it into a NUC

ashen spindle
#

yes something like that will probably be the way if its coming in any non laptop variant

cursive summit
#

@umbral heron Oi darling, do you by any chance specialize in VMs? havo

#

I have ran a few VMs by now but all of them were always rather.. 10FPS or so?

#

Is that like, the VM experience or should it run like native

umbral heron
#

When I used KVM on Linux to make a Windows VM with GPU pass-through it ran pretty much like native
I never had more than 15fps in VirtualBox though dogekek
And I don't really know how Microsoft Hyper-V experience looks like

cursive summit
#

Yeah I am with HyperV

#

Though I had a similar experience running Linux Mint through VMWare, it just wasn't anywhere near native

#

I suppose I might just have misconfigured VMs, disabled features or something on my BIOS

#

Or Hyper-V is just slow

fair gull
#

are we talking hyperv on a normal os or their hyperv server versions

cursive summit
#

Normal OS

fair gull
#

oof

cursive summit
#

Ah so I'm guessing it's not great

fair gull
#

well

#

sub optimal id call it. their windows server hyperv editions are serviceable as they cut out all the DE and WM stuff that makes windows kinda shit and also a lot of other services etc.

#

ideally youd run some linux with kvm or ESXi

astral haven
#

if you run a single windows vm on hyper-v server its identical

umbral heron
#

It shouldn't be that slow though
Maybe try tinkering with GPU Partitioning? Really cool feature, thanks to Windows running underneath
Dunno how it works with AMD/Nvidia GPUs, since they don't allow for SR-IOV for some reason Sadge

cursive summit
#

What's GPU partitioning, never heard of it

astral haven

hyper-v is pain for gpu virtualization

Uh

#

This just seems like it'd screw something up

astral haven
# fair gull yes

well thats screwed up
theres no way for there to be a difference besides different config or minor updates

cursive summit
#

Especially since idk how Hyper-V even allocates GPU in general, there are no options unlike VMware which did let me tweak GPU allocation

fair gull
#

idk i couldnt pin point any difference except the base image

astral haven
#

gotta understand that enabling hyper-v on regular server causes you to boot the full fat hyper-v kernel, and your main os becomes a high priority primary vm

fair gull
#

im aware that it changes how the windows environment is setup but... i tell ya we got free perf out of nowhere

#

i only even tried this because we had perf issues i never had before

astral haven
#

why did you set both up at the same time?

#

wouldnt you just take the 2019 server you had in production and test against a new hyper-v server install

fair gull
#

well we had 2 servers to be setup the same for 2 different companies

umbral heron
fair gull
#

but ran into a wall with a DMS/NAS solution to be setup on both

astral haven
#

interesting

cursive summit
fair gull
#

disk speeds just never reached what they should so we reinstalled 1 on hyper-v server

#

and that somehow fixed it

astral haven
#

san > nas change my mind

astral haven
fair gull
#

well the customer insisted on synology cause they used it before

#

so i set it up in a vm after alot of pain getting that to work

#

surprise surprise they dont like their os running on non synology hardware

astral haven
#

yea :/

fair gull
#

so i said fuck it and just used hyper-v server directly since then

#

although it did mean we could charge extra on future stuff cause now we also sold a management pc with a windows desktop to be sat in the server room to manage hyperv locally

#

i wish i could have pushed for a linux host system

#

but my boss was scared of it

astral haven

vagrant pagoda

It's really not worth the hassle unless you have a damn good reason

for gaming, kvm is far more versatile

vagrant pagoda

hey guys, trying to figure out what monitor to get. my 240hz 1080p 24inch died on me, so im trying to decide if a 1440p 27inch 240hz would be better? however considering im only on a 3070ti it wouldnt run 240fps on warzone 2/3, which as of now is my main game however I do play CS and apex. Would 1440p be that much better for clarity at spotting enemies further away? or is 1080p fine and the extra hz worth it. i consider myself fairly competitive however not e sports level obviously.

smoky frigate
#

if only I could add custom transcoders...

thick elk
#

Just wondering why are you using the transcoders?
When I still needed transcodes I just had a shell script transcoding my whole library to move it to my phone.

#

Moving to a larger micro-sd has made that redundant

#

I always saw transcoders inside music players like that as a redundant feature.

smoky frigate
#

if I do that, I will have very little space left on my phone, and I need that for work/photos

thick elk
#

Still is your music player the best place to transcode? or are there better dedicated solutions?

smoky frigate
#

I used to have foobar2000 do all that work for me, I would transcode everything that's lossless and copy everything lossy, using the same folder structure

#

worked remarkably well, but it looks like I need to advance to shell scripts too now 😛

umbral heron
thick elk
#

Basically my script, made simplified versions to copy the few files that were not flacs next to it, because I was to lazy to make it all one script.
If I were to make this again I wouldn't just write it in shell, and could very well leverage ffmpeg instead of directly interfacing with opusenc.

smoky frigate
#

hrm, this is way above my skill level but I will copy it regardless, thanx

hell yeah even more webservers

#

people should just start using caddy

old marlin
#

people should host their webservers on a vw caddy

fair gull
#

having recently switched i do like it more than nginx despite having used nginx for ages. the simple fact it automatically does HTTP->HTTPS and automatically gets all SSL certs for configured domains etc makes it so much nicer cause my configs arent full of garbage just to set those 2 up.

#

also feels slightly faster

halcyon moss
#

treafik seems a popular option for that as well

fair gull
#

yeah i heard a lot about treafik as well but havent used it personally

#

in general i feel like nginx will loose marketshare in the future

halcyon moss
#

auto ssl with nginx and docker is a bit of a pain unfortunately

fair gull
#

i mean even always having to do the http redirect explicitly is shit imo

halcyon moss
#

true

fair gull
#

like these days you have to use https and ssl certs to just be available on the web

#

and for the 1 or 2 internal domains i wanna use http only i can still explicitly disable those 2 things for that 1 specific domain

raw zephyr
#

but for anything outside of docker it's dumb

Oh damn

That just doesn't look fake

Stock footage market sure does appear to be nearing its death

It feeds on literal stock footage.

So uh... might want to hold off a bit.

Still, most people would not look into the footage with eagle eyes and spot artifacts

#

If this is used as stock footage, hell during some youtube show or whatever for like a 3-4 second clip, it's absolutely perfect for that usage

fair gull

yeah

especially with how customizable it is over existing stock footage

also saw some basketball video of theirs which was really impressive since it understood like spatial placement of objects even if it fell apart right after by having a second basketball phase through the hoop

I decided to give Lollypop a whirl as an audio player, and I think it may even beat Strawberry for me. it automatically downloads artist pix too, but only from Spotify. so if the artist isn't on spotify, it takes the first vague match it can find, leading to results like this

i've just been on mpd+ncmpcpp forever, gave some graphical players a whirl at some point but never really liked any to settle on something

@marsh pewter ill tag you here, cuz its not about 60He anymore, I would love to hear your opinion!

100% pushing the limits is great, but pretty important for a mouse? It will become more accurate, but it blows up your battery life.. New mouses with 4k (some claim 8K), but are worse than other mouses that say 1k/2k/4k polling rate, so not all polling rates are the same?

Dont get me wrong, for the wooting im happy that it gets "updated" (Who cares about battery life when you plug it in?), like customers always want something new or something "better", but will it really make a difference where we as humans aren't that accurate or fast to response?

# snow bronze <@1058228726237777941> ill tag you here, cuz its not about 60He anymore, I would...

its possible those mice that are promising 4k-8k polling dont have the scanning to back it up. its also up to QC and overall latency that makes a mouse good or bad.

wooting pushing the limits is pretty neat and while at the end of the day it isnt really needed, without wooting pushing the limits we wouldnt have HE boards in general. now 8k polling is pretty overkill, but in the current tech market they sorta had to do it, otherwise another brand would come out with a true 8k polling HE keyboard and would pull people away from wooting (at least thats how I see it)

smoky frigate
#

why not make a ps/2 keyboard if the latency is so important

you could even get a PS/2 card to support it lol

ultimate latency reduction right there, gamers
