jank animations where? havent had that in ages

wheat plume
#

win + tab animation used to be really jank

#

especially wiht lots of windows open

astral haven
#

its still janky for slower computers, happens on my surface pro 4

reef patrol
#

Who the hell uses that shit anyway

astral haven
#

but on faster stuff its speedy

wheat plume
#

I dont on Windows

reef patrol
#

Hurr durr look at me. I use multiple, virtual desktops, because I like having 50 tabs open, and this should be reflected in my desktop setup.

steep creek
#

yeah shouldnt lag on newer hardware

astral haven
#

chromeapps are still apps

thick elk
#

Virtual desktops / workspaces are nice if you switch between tasks and want to basically say, okay I and one with this, I can close all the crap associated.

steep creek
#

i use at least 5 apps for studying at the moment, but never had the need to use more than one virtual desktop lol

#

alt tabbing is sufficient

unkempt lake
#

8.1 was not bad, people just didn't like change

thick elk
#

Even with multiple monitors at work it really helps me to not have a million browser windows open at the same time

#

Windows 8 was garbage, it's UX was most definitely a mistake for laptop and desktop use.

#

8.1 fixed some things but it certainly was not great by any means.

astral haven
#

was fine for tablets

unkempt lake
#

And touch screen convertibles

thick elk
#

Don't get me wrong, you could fix it with a start menu and such but out of the box for most users it was a definite step down.

astral haven
#

and touchscreen aios

steep creek
#

windows 8 was mireable for me, made me switch back to macos

#

came back to windows with win10

wheat plume
thick elk
#

Problem with windows 8 and 8.1 on a tablet / touch screen was at the time most applications were not really well designed for such use.

reef patrol
#

And then Microsoft killed the project šŸ˜„

#

So devs couldn't adapt.

astral haven
thick elk
#

It was meant to replace windows 7, even if it never reached it's market share

wheat plume
#

I love how DeepinOS devs are like FUCK SNAPS

astral haven
#

which obviously didnt happen, but if it did, youd be good

thick elk
#

Still kind of sad touchscreens are not more common place on laptops, using a tabletpc with a keyboard on linux, I find having a touch screen quite useful.
Quick tap mixed in, quick swipe up, often much nicer than using the touchpad.

astral haven
#

yep

#

ive been spoiled by my work which is about half surface pros

wheat plume
#

Ive always wanted a Surface...but the proprietary charging port and the expense of them once you factor in the 250 extra for the keyboard...its not great for the price

astral haven
#

usb c ah yes very proprietary

steep creek
#

lol

wheat plume
#

they use that magnetic shit though

#

not usb c

astral haven
#

so if you buy a replacement psu, get a usb c one?

steep creek
#

you can still charge it through the usb c port

wheat plume
#

they can also charge with USB C??

#

ooohhhhh

astral haven
#

yes

wheat plume
#

good

#

I wanna only need to have one charger with multiple ports to bring around instead of a giant charger with a brick along it for my laptop

#

my current charger can charge my laptop and phone at once and its tiny

astral haven
#

you can even buy a usb c to magnetic power cable

wheat plume
#

ooohh

thick elk
#

On your old laptop, you can probably get an addapter to usb-c, those work quite nicely.

wheat plume
#

oh, my bad....its not 250 extra for the Surface keyboard

thick elk
#

But yea I do hope Minisforum succeeds as I do think the form-factor is great.
Personally using a Chuwi UBook X which is not that performant and a bit smaller, but still perfectly fine for my limited laptop use.

wheat plume
#

its 200 extra .-.

astral haven
#

the keyboard is expensive

#

but the pen is nice

wheat plume
#

200 :/

#

there is a keyboard and pen bundle for 300

halcyon moss
#

You lose one of the usbc connectors charging so prepare to bring a dock

steep creek
#

i know microsoft has deals for students, if that applies to you

wheat plume
#

for the V3?

#

whats the newest Surface gen?

thick elk
#

There are third party keyboards for the surface devices though, don't know how good they are but on the suface they seem like a reasonable option.

astral haven
#

9+

wheat plume
#

9?

#

fucking hell. the Go is a horrible deal

#

600 for Pentium Gold and 4GB RAM

halcyon moss
#

4gb lol. That's impossible

thick elk
#

The cheapest go is pretty bad yea

wheat plume
#

The cheapest Surface 9 is 1,329

astral haven
#

what currency is that?

wheat plume
#

Euro

#

8gb ram 256 storage

astral haven
#

that seems strangely high

thick elk
#

She lives in Ireland prices are somewhat higher there

wheat plume
#

16GB RAM is 1,699

#

core i3....

astral haven
#

btw the storage is upgradeable with just 1 screw

wheat plume
#

for 1699..... wtf Microsoft

#

gimme a freaking i7 for that price please

steep creek
#

the base surface go 3 here is 1067 usd, i5 with 8gigs and 256 ssd

astral haven
#

they dont have an i3 option?

#

pro

wheat plume
#

is there a non Pro Surface 9?

astral haven
#

no

wheat plume
#

ah...

astral haven
#

theres the sq3 which is garbage

wheat plume
#

q?

astral haven
#

but its i5 or i7 practically

#

qualcomm

wheat plume
#

o

astral haven
#

incredible battery life

#

heres the pricing

steep creek
#

base pro 9 is like 1430 usd

wheat plume
#

I hope the Minisforum V3 is actually a good price...

#

and comes with keyboard case like the other Surface competitors

astral haven
#

its going to be rather expensive

#

comes with keyboard and pen according to the teaser

wheat plume
#

hmm...I thought minisforum had decently fair pricing though??

wheat plume
astral haven
#

its got usb4, and a mux for the usb c video in

wheat plume
#

mux?

astral haven
#

thing that allows video from 2 different sources

wheat plume
#

oohh

astral haven
#

its a rather expensive chip

halcyon moss
#

Mux is that there are hardware lines to display between igpu/dgpu. Otherwise dgpu is routed via igpu, and that's costs frames

wheat plume
#

oooohhh

astral haven
#

thats its main use, but not whats going on here

wheat plume
#

whats it used for here?

astral haven
#

video in from outside of the chassis

#

via usb c

halcyon moss
#

That's cool, keeps it kinda useful when the pc inside isn't

astral haven
#

its unknown if the touch functionality also gets routed to the usb c port, but if it does, id be very hype

wheat plume
#

I hope it would!!!!

astral haven
#

tbh id be shocked if it didnt

wheat plume
#

Lingong

ashen spindle
#

on intel? not for a while

#

arl still has e waste without it

astral haven
#

they are changing avx to be variable length with avx10, and in theory that would allow the e cores to run the instructions without the speed boost from having more registers and wider instruction path

reef patrol
#

Dunno, don't care.

ashen spindle
astral haven
#

hey they could make it work

#

heck they could make any processor avx512 with microcode it would just be incredibly slow

ashen spindle
#

well you see, no, becuase it's already starting to be a mess in the spec itself and HPC people are already mad at intel for not makin 10 as clean as it was first shown lol

astral haven
#

They could make it work on the processor side

#

It just would be a bad look because it would be avx512 slower than avx2

ashen spindle
#

looks like R2 is a patent troll company

#

also why can none of these articles ever link to court decision in these cases jfc

#

reports about lawsuits are always a mess

wheat plume
#

R Studio is a mistake

#

so much fuckign Haskell

#

ITS ALL HASKELL

#

UGHH

halcyon moss
#

Who cares. It's dependencies. Install and uninstall when done

#

That's what package managers are for

wheat plume
#

does pacman support wildcards??

#

pacman -R haskell*

halcyon moss
#

Just uninstall r studio

#

And the orphaned packages should go as well

#

At least.. That's how a sane one would do it

wheat plume
#

forgot what the package name is .-.

halcyon moss
#

Anyway... You're doing r now?

wheat plume
cursive summit
#

Why are you doing R

timber mantle
#

Perhaps she's a pirate

halcyon moss
#

R is for statistics and data visualization

cursive summit
#

I am aware since I had to do R once upon a time

#

RStudio was pretty interesting to work with

#

But, why

halcyon moss
#

Soon we'll hear, wtf arrays start at 1 in r?

ashen spindle
#

nono, you skipped the part about the complaints about the UI of r studio

halcyon moss
#

It doesn't follow my obscure and barely working KDE theme!

cursive summit
#

It's not

It's Hackintosh havo

wheat plume

halcyon moss
#

It also isn't 20years ago now is it?

wheat plume
#

fair

#

wait...plasma supported VRR since 2 years?!

#

damnnnnn GG plasma

#

Meanwhile, Gnome devs arent pushing it for Gnome 46 cause they cant settle on a UI design to add the settings into the desktop

#

even though the feature works

ashen spindle

and that's why linux isnt for gaming yet dogekek

ericsson didn't really have a foothold in the hip market until the T28/T10 etc

mild dome
#

In true Apple fashion. A multihundred dollar accessory practically required for a multi-thousand dollar product that for most other manufacturers add on for free and for replacements only charge 1/10th

astral haven
#

well to be fair it has a pretty large speaker, and is going to be an insanely low volume device

dim light
#

well, it’s a custom made product just for devs…

astral haven
dim light
#

which is for basically a purchasable prototype that cost 12x the strap :D

mild dome
astral haven
#

but most other headsets also require it

dim light
#

yeah but it’s a not a vr headset

astral haven
dim light
#

it’s a spacial something something

mild dome
#

The USB-C port could have been included on the display itself like other headsets. Could have had a high-speed uplink with DP like other headsets. Could have had flexibility like other headsets

dim light
#

it only works with iphones and macbooks and can’t do pc vr

#

if you’re into vr that’s just not a device you should buy

mild dome
#

For like 1/5th the price

dim light
#

but what would you hook it up to? it can’t do pc vr

astral haven
#

^

dim light
#

like it’s not a ā€œvr headsetā€

astral haven
#

it very much is

dim light
#

it’s a $3500 prototype of a spacial display more or less

astral haven
#

just locked down so the only vr apps you can run are apple ones

dim light
#

it’s its own thing, i think

astral haven
#

no

#

i tried it, its a vr headset

mild dome
#

That's my complaint, the Apple VR headset could have had full capability like other headsets. Apple could have added it on for not much extra cost/weight since it's already got a whole ass computer.
They chose not to because it would cut into their future plans to charge a gorbillion dollars for everything a real VR headset does

astral haven
#

nah

#

they dont want it to do serious games at all

#

they want it to be an ar headset, it just isnt

#

its very much vr still

ashen spindle
#

its like most first gen apple products a dev kit for what the future product should be like

mild dome
#

It could've done both

astral haven
#

potentially

#

but its not that easy

#

and it would get absolutely trashed

#

it is very much not a great experience if you move too quickly

mild dome
#

The only issue with it doing both is that the headset isn't well secured to the head, which could've been fixed with a better headband

astral haven
#

have you tried it?

#

its pretty yikes

dim light
mild dome
#

What's wrong, low framerate or loose headband?

astral haven
#

the framerate is fine, its just very high persistence

#

blurry in motion

dim light
mild dome
#

Wait but it uses OLED, how did they fuck it up?

astral haven
astral haven
dim light
#

ah

#

still

#

idk why everyone is so up in arms about it

astral haven
#

the index is .02ms of blur
the quest 2 and 3 are also .02ms of blur
the vision pro is probably closer to 2ms

dim light
#

it’s $3500, no point in buying it or even taking it serious

mild dome
#

Thing is people are buying it and heaping praise on it.
Since we start hearing about it constantly we start complaining about all the things it does wrong, and why it shouldn't be praised

astral haven
#

well yea
it made me sick after less than half an hour of sitting down

#

its definetly the best vr headset pretending to be an ar headset that is also self contained

#

and the eye tracking is very solid too

#

alyx on the vision pro would be very nice probably

#

the hand tracking would need to get better as would computers

#

the problem is that its nowhere near powerful enough

#

the quest has 1/4 the pixels

dim light
#

eh… if you really want one, they found a hole in the OS so a jailbreak might come… and then maybe pc vr ;)

crisp granite
#

Of course it is

#

I’m just glad it’s also on PCVR

#

Because I love what meta is doing…as a shareholder

astral haven
#

like sure the m2 is faster than the xr2g2
but its not 4x faster

but it got metal

Gnome devs have a merge request for VRR but they are debating among themselves how best to add it to the settings UI .-.

crisp granite

@ashen spindle

#

Deckard copium?

#

Gonna nag you for some every time the new metro gets mentioned

astral haven
#

samsung google partnership probably coming sooner :/

ashen spindle
#

lmao nothing new, bradley is only using his vision pro atm and nothing big in steam sourcode happening

crisp granite
#

I do not want my first VR gaming experience to be on the 3500 dollar chastity belt

ashen spindle
#

seriously, make a meta account with no info, get a quest 3 and enjoy it for much better value

crisp granite
#

I’m secretly super paranoid about that

#

Would rather just have a pure PCVR headset

ashen spindle
#

if you ever used alexa or siri or whatever they got more info than any vr headset would ever get from you

ashen spindle
#

never been in the same room as someone using it so it picked up your voice?

crisp granite
#

not that I recall

#

I don’t talk much in public, nor do I visit others with smart devices

ashen spindle
#

even if it's just someone who have it enabled on their phone in their pocked and it picked you up talking that's more likely than a quest sending any valueable info that it takes from you

astral haven
#

and you can always just turn off internet access to the quest in your router

crisp granite
#

…fine

astral haven
#

it also afaik can be manually firmware updated via a pc?

crisp granite
#

I’ll get a quest 3 and tamp down EVERYTHING

astral haven
#

if you can wait, theres definetly gonna be more headsets

crisp granite
#

I can

astral haven
#

so no reason to get it until the game is out that you want to play

crisp granite
#

I got a backlog of VR games and won’t have a lot of time or space to enjoy them for years

#

Hence waiting for deckard

ashen spindle
#

yeah if you want to wait for unspecified time there will be something better, but out of all the options currently available I can only recommend the quest 3 due to price and all

crisp granite
#

bleh

#

hopefully that one can run metro redux at 60FPS 720p

ashen spindle
#

also aside from price, anything more expensive isn't even better really, index knuckles are nice but I'd rather have the quest3 screens because it has less lense flare

crisp granite
#

Even after the OLED model?

crisp granite
# astral haven bigscreen?

That’s my backup ā€œmoney is no object and I can theoretically use it well into the 2030sā€ headset

ashen spindle
#

yeah bigscreen I guess, but idk if that even ships to the eu?

#

also not something you're getting anytime soon even if you order now

astral haven
#

i do very much think that the vision pro competitors from the android phone makers will be very interesting

ashen spindle
#

hopefully, competition is always nice, but thats just not a current product

marsh glade
ashen spindle
#

wrong company mark

marsh glade
#

Especially the Nasdaq today. The S&P was the leader with Nasdaq as the sick sister, but as of today those roles have reversed

astral haven
#

amd is getting big orders from ai companies
ARM is not

marsh glade
#

Here have an annotated chart of the Nasdaq for what exactly has happened over the last week or two

ashen spindle
#

sure but if arm wasnt going to say they expect a 30% increase in revenue in the coming quarter the market doing whatever it does on those graphs wouldn't have caused such a jump

marsh glade
#

Don't fall into the trap of applying a piece of news after the fact to explain what has already happened

#

If AMD rallies on the news, then people will attribute it to the news being "received well by investors" but it is precisely equaly as likely that AMD could have tanked on the news release and people would have been more than happy to say "it was priced in"

#

The market only ever does one of two things:
It reaches for liquidity
or
It rebalances inefficient price delivery

ashen spindle
#

it's still not AMD we talked about šŸ˜›

marsh glade
#

Oh

#

ARM, AMD, doesn't matter haha

astral haven
#

and we arent talking about investment advice, we are talking about tech companies we are interested in

marsh glade
#

Market went up because there are willing buyers at higher prices

ashen spindle
#

and its not news its from its earnings report

marsh glade
#

Earnings report = news

astral haven
#

financial statements arent just news

ashen spindle
marsh glade
#

The release of information, whether that's news or earnings or the CEO shitting in a park, is just cover by which to reprice to liquidity

astral haven
#

yea but that statement is circular

marsh glade
#

It's only circular because you're looking at it from the wrong angle

#

Trades can only be executed if they are on the books. Trades get placed on the books either as limit orders or market orders. Price is moved such that traders are forced to engage, and "news" is used as a cover to "explain" that movement.

#

People buy above old highs and sell below old lows

#

That is the actual reality of the market

astral haven
#

same could be said to you
you only think its logical because you are only interested in the market

#

I am using the market as a divining rod for reality, not using reality as a divining rod for the market

#

or even worse using the market as a divining rod for the market

marsh glade
#

What I love about the markets is that they cannot lie. The truth that is printed on the charts is forever, and how one does or does not engage with that truth is as binary as anything can be. You either bought, you sold, or you did nothing. Set in stone, forever.

#

I guess 3 options isn't binary, but you know what I mean šŸ˜‚

astral haven
#

sure

#

but it would be difficult for me to care less about the market

#

i use the second derivative of the market as a notification of interesting news in reality

marsh glade
#

The question was asked, "Wtf happened with XYZ" to which the answer was, it went up because there were willing buyers at higher prices

#

Nothing more, nothing less

astral haven
#

yes but thats not what we were asking

#

the interesting part to me is, why were there more willing buyers

marsh glade
#

Because it was priced above old highs

astral haven
#

and to be more specific, was there anything in reality that caused buyers to be more willing

marsh glade
#

Silly humans think of that as "strength" or "momentum" or because they were short and were forced to protect their position by closing at a loss

#

The number of buyers or the volume of buying is neither known nor relevant

astral haven
#

to the market

#

but im not interested in the market

#

my interest is in the technology

marsh glade
#

You're looking for the narrative

ashen spindle
#

the price went up after earnings so the earnings must have been something that wasn "yup same exact thing as we told you last time and you were expecting" so the question is what part of arm made that possible

marsh glade
#

I deny that assumption

astral haven
#

we know, but you are only looking at the market itself

ashen spindle
#

so you think if the earnings call would have said they make half as much as expected next quarter the same thing would have happened?

marsh glade
#

Look at any major economic news release, you can have "good" numbers and the market moves higher, you can have "bad" numbers and the market moves higher. The reverse is true too, you can have "good" numbers and the market move lower, and you can have "bad" numbers and the market move lower

astral haven
#

so what did i say about that

marsh glade
astral haven
#

which i already addressed

#

can you find where I addressed it

marsh glade
#

This may come as a surprise to you, but my explanation of the reality of what happened as I perceive it, was not addressed to you

#

So no I'm not going to circle with a red marker where you've provided your own opinions on what matters to you

hopefully itll be a memory one

astral haven

actually if you can use the keyboard in that mode, it would be unlikely that touch wouldnt work

steep creek

ah

and no battery in the pen

the s pen is the same tech

steep creek

yeah it has a capacitor if im not wrong

astral haven

kinda but no

steep creek

aha?

astral haven

the capacitor is for bluetooth, the actual pen signals are created by the screen and pen electronically resonating

halcyon moss

astral haven

yes and no

#

s pen has remote features with the button

#

remote needs charging

steep creek

right i see

astral haven
#

but the writing itself doesnt need charging

steep creek
#

now im kinda curious, dont think we've studied this in class yet

halcyon moss
#

My wife has it, never uses it.

astral haven
#

i can pick up the wacom pen that has been sitting in my backpack for 2 years (i have collected a bunch over time) and use it on my screen immediately
Or at least that was what i was going to say but i cant find the old pens, i only can find my new pen which i use every few weeks

unkempt lake
#

People write?

#

With pens?

steep creek
#

almost every day yes

astral haven
steep creek
#

though to be fair some of these pens charge up so quick i dont know if it would be noticeable for students at least if they need to be charged or not

astral haven
#

found it, the silver one i harvested from a phone going to ewaste, black one came with my phone

steep creek
astral haven
#

they are rather small, and the black one requires a special case to use it

#

well to keep the phone and pen attached

steep creek
#

ah yeah this is the s21u pen right? after that i believe it could be stored inside the phone

astral haven
#

correct

steep creek
#

i see

astral haven
#

i cant use them any more since my case has magnets, and the magnets interfere with the writing, (fixed in newer versions of the case)

#

white circles around the dead zones for the s pen

steep creek
#

ah yeah i did read some complaints about using a magsafe case with the s pen

#

looks fine though, deadzones seem okay for quick note taking

astral haven
#

the problem is the pointer is pushed away from those spots

steep creek
#

oh hm

astral haven
#

i have bad handwriting but its not thaaaaat bad

steep creek
#

yea i guess i can see why that becomes an issue now

astral haven
#

before i used this case, i also turned the phone sideways for notetaking

#

and uh not an option now

reef patrol
#

Hand...writing?

astral haven
#

im slow to type on my phone

#

and you cant always dictate

#

also sometimes you need to draw diagrams

steep creek
#

not too fond of note taking math lectures on a keyboard lol

astral haven
#

anyways the new pen also allows you to use it as a shutter button and do other stuff, and since its always in the phone, it should be much easier to always have available

#

those features require charging the small capacitor inside

steep creek
#

yeah ive seen some of those features they're nice

#

i read about it a bit and it makes more sense now

#

i'd like to have some remote actions with the apple pencil, like being able to use it as a pointer, or remote for presenting slides

#

that would be really nice

astral haven
#

unfortunately you cant use it as a pointer

#

you can just make gestures in the air to take actions on the phone

Extra bonus, 6ghz is hard to push through walls, meaning that there's less interference

ashen spindle

yeah but also means the server is not behind a wall so might as well just take the one meter cable dogekek

astral haven
