Ubuntu bad because most of the stuff can't be changed with terminal as usual on other distros - Ubuntu wants to do so only though some of its "configurators", and replaces every change made with terminal to previous one

fair gull
#

so... its bad for your usecase

umbral heron
#

Sure, either my usecase, or my habits I got from other distros PeepoShrug

fair gull
#

imo all major OSs at the moment are completely fine on their own

#

also have to say ubuntu must be the one OS trying to become equal to windows/macos for the general population

#

didnt even know it has those mechanisms to revert configurations etc

umbral heron
#

I think it's more of a failsafe for "if user tries to change something with some command they found on the internet but they're not sure what it does", which is perfectly fine for user-friendly OS

#

Just not for my usecase duck_sip

tl;dw features for handheld/mobile devices got carried over to desktop parts accidentally causing it to underperform in longer workloads

cursive summit
#

That's a pretty big bandwidth jump

#

But will the bus width still be like, 512 bit at the very max?

#

4090 is like 384 bit, 1080Ti was 352 bit, it's like the width never really changes

ashen spindle
#

god this going to haunt intel so much harder than we thought

cursive summit
#

@ashen spindleany comments on the GDDR7 tech and bus width never changing?

ashen spindle
#

idk thats not really relevant for consumer products

#

memory isnt the bottleneck

fair gull
cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

idk

cursive summit
#

I mean, while you are right that memory isn't the main bottleneck, it still accounts for a very large part of.. FPS, I suppose

#

80% increased bandwidth would definitely result in two digit performance gains

ashen spindle
#

eh thats mostly for cost optimizing and what not

fair gull
ashen spindle
#

you can get most of the performance with previous gen memory

ashen spindle
cursive summit
#

I don't quite understand why the memory bus never increases

#

Where's 1024 bit bus, is it expensive to do?

ashen spindle
#

anyone want raptor lake refresh refresh?

#

that's right we might get a 14th gen refresh havo

umbral heron
fair gull
#

i think the main reason to increase not increase bus width is specialized controllers and it needs more ram chips iirc

#

also wasnt there rumors last year or so that the next nvidia flagship will be 512bit bus

ashen spindle
#

for all we know they could make some G7X special memory again, and cut that down as they need

cursive summit
#

132 FPS is very nice

ashen spindle
#

it doesnt really matter since they can change that quite late and only really matters to not starve the cores

cursive summit
#

49FPS in Baldur's Gate 3 and 41 in 2077 though I think are the real kickers

fair gull
#

let me guess 1080p

cursive summit
#

iGPU gaming is actually proper

fair gull
#

mid settings

cursive summit
#

Strix Halo will be bonkers

ashen spindle
#

it's still cheaper to get a cheap cpu and cheap gpu for same performance

#

but SFF and similar will be happy

cursive summit
#

That's what people usually tend to test iGPUs on nowadays I noticed

ashen spindle
#

and yeah it's more of a run up to whats coming soon-ish

cursive summit
#

Yeah I think that low end GPUs are very much getting endangered

#

AMD is in a position to manufacture CPUs with the capability of easily running 1080p at all qualities

#

We'll see if AMD can also endanger dedicated 1440p GPUs with the Halo

ashen spindle
#

anyway lets talk more about jokes, who wants to get 15th gen aka core 200 but not core ultra bu still the same core as alder lake? dogekek

umbral heron
#

Maybe it's time to make 1080p tiny PC with 8700G? Think

reef patrol
#

It's nice... in theory. Not much use having an 8800 something APU with no GPU.
You need the APU changes to happen on the cheaper models, so that eSports PCs get stronger.

#

I sold - so - goddamn many PCs with APUs in the 1060 days for families who wanted their 10yr old to start gaming.

cursive summit
#

I wonder what the pricing is on this

#

Since when does PCIe matter anymore

ashen spindle
old marlin
#

with no HT on higher end parts

ashen spindle
#

I mean, arrow lake is taking away HT yes

cursive summit
#

Ok the 8700G is a bit hard to swallow at $329

#

That's X3D pricing

ashen spindle
#

but we might get a refresh-refresh before

cursive summit
#

I have a spare B450 board and I think 16 gigs of RAM, I wonder what low-cost GPU and CPU I could get for entry level "TV box" build

#

4K, minimum gaming capabilities at native, indie titles and oldies, YouTube, movies

#

Would have to be SFF

umbral heron
#

Hmm... Maybe 5600G* would do?

cursive summit
#

Well I doubt old APUs would cut it at 4K

#

Maybe.. Arc 380 with some R5 5500?

umbral heron
#

If you want only to stream at 4K and play light games, it should be enough

cursive summit
#

I suppose that'd be the way to go

#

Idk how much are 6600XTs and such nowadays

On all other devices yeah that’s true but the macs are surprisingly nice

you can get significantly faster charging using one with more juice

maybe not ridiculous 20 minutes to full battery like some of those chynaphones but 20% to full in about an hour at least

I’m using the 20w brick with my phone and it’s okay up to 50-60 then it slows down a lot

crisp granite

cursive summit

Phones charge at set speeds, while you should prolly find a charger that matches those specs, i.e can actually deliver 30W cause I think chargers go in "gears" and allow for not dynamic but set amounts of power delivery

#

If you go overboard, phone will only charge at set speeds, say, 30W

But I dunno if a charging brick which is rated for 120W but doesn't get a 30W mode would charge at 30W exact and not like, 25W, I wonder

The initial versions of the USB standard specified connectors that were easy to use and that would have acceptable life spans; revisions of the standard added smaller connectors useful for compact portable devices. Higher-speed development of the USB standard gave rise to another family of connectors to permit additional data paths. All versions...

There doesn't seem to be much difference between 25w and 45w for samsung when charging to 100%. 45w is faster in the mid point but levels out at the end.

that sounds very german at least

thick elk
#

In the netherlands things are pretty free in that regard, only if you publish footage of a person do things get more complicated.

#

Also no you are not allowed to just film and record your neighbours lawn. Only really a problem if he complains.

#

and you don't act on that.

#

Commercially there are more restrictions, but at work our security camera's filming most of the streets around the bulding is seen as a good thing mostly.

halcyon moss
#

That would be Austria. It's technically illigal over thetd

frozen ingot
#

iirc you can't have a camera installed filming outside your building/premises here if it observes a public space

#

or at least it used to be like that, nowadays with people filming publically with smartphones everywhere it would be trickier to make a case I guess

thick elk
#

In the Netherlands on paper filming public spaces is mostly not allowed, unless you can justify it.
For example in an area with a lot of break-ins / crime.
This does apply for where I work at least.

Another thing would be as long as nobody complains or if you act upon the complains if they do occur its fine.
As always laws are only as good as their enforcements.

astral haven

like its fine for video but its pain for reading text

steep creek

yeah i can imagine

astral haven

also the fov is too small, 50% bigger would be real nice

steep creek

hm im reading its 40 degrees thats small yeah

only vr type device ive tried is quest 3 and that got me really dizzy, so i think ill hold out for sometime

oh i thought all the beyerdynamic pros had detachable cables

tiny jasper

but the cable is a 3.5 cable with a 6.25 adapter

tiny jasper

is not detachable

#

YES

astral haven

make sure the adapter is fully seated

tiny jasper
#

I double check ofc

astral haven
#

once you are sure, turn up the volume of the evo
first make sure the volume in windows is maxed

#

then click down the main volume button on the evo and turn it to the right to increase the volume

#

be aware that on new devices, the 6.25 can be really hard to fully plug in

tiny jasper
#

I always use the maxed level volume on both device (Windows and the EVO) and is still playing muffled, i dont know why is strange and still belive is because the OHM

astral haven
#

oh also on the beyerdynamic, the 3.5 to 6.25 adapter has to be screwed in, if its not fully screwed in, it might not make proper contact

RTX 4080 SUPER gets the first review As we mentioned, NVIDIA has delayed the release of RTX 4080 SUPER reviews. The exact reason for this delay is a simple mishap with Founders Edition sampling. Some cards simply arrived too late to give every reviewer the same amount of time for testing. As a result, the […]

ashen spindle

unkempt lake
crisp granite
#

At least a few percent

#

Either way, it’s a 4080 at a lower price

ashen spindle
#

and also reviews were originally out yesterday so reviewers would already have drivers for that

unkempt lake
#

That this card is supposed to be

#

And 2% to try to catch up to the xtx in raster

#

That's what was expected

#

Reminds me of when the 2080 super was released and I was faster than it with my overclocked 2080

#

4080 super is just the 2080 super again, a very slight boost

#

And a price drop

ashen spindle

5% more cuda cores, yeah lower price basically same performance

Im choosing between g pro 2 or the pulsar x2h

unkempt lake

wintry pier
#

Yeah true

unkempt lake
#

I'd probably go for the g pro 2 cuz im already stuck running ghub for my headset

#

😛

#

And i've had no issues rmaing to logitech before

wintry pier
#

Alr thanks was curious because this is my first like big purchase for M and K

unkempt lake
#

Having a company take care of you when you have an issue i think is an important thing so if i know they have a decent rma system and i had a good experience with it i prefer going with thay

#

Pulsar i have never owned or used one of their products nor do i know what their rmas are like

#

Maybe look it up and see if they're rated to have good cs

wintry pier
#

Will do thanks yet again

unkempt lake
#

Logitech has decent cs and rma, only issue is they take a bit to respond at times

#

So yeah i'd go logi if you have another logi peripheral like a headset since you're already stuck running ghub or go pulsar if thay's not the case

#

And if pulsar has good cs/rma (i have no idea personally also one thing to remember is people tend to post negative things more often than positive things)

#

It does seem cheaper than the logi so it may be a nice choice @wintry pier

On one hand RPis are selling out as soon as they are in stock
On the other, they kinda lost relevance and there's a lot of other SBCs on the market https://hackerboards.com/

RPi is meant to be universal SBC, but in the end every missing functionality you have to add with new PCBs, HATs etc. whereas at this point it's better to just go with certain purpose focused SBC
Raspberry is still ahead when it comes to software, but official support is still spotty at best, it took them ages to bring Raspbian to 64-bit, and for now for example proper support for WPA3 still does not exist

if you are getting vr sickness in alyx, its the computer or the headset, the game is by far the most accessible game with movement

reef patrol
#

Didn't it use to?

Could have sworn you had to move manually, and that was what dictated if time was slow or not.

old marlin
#

What

astral haven
#

no, you either move your body or you teleport

old marlin
#

I thought you only teleported in vr

astral haven
#

theres no vr movement system

thick elk
#

Yea basically that

reef patrol
#

Oh in the VR game

astral haven
#

yes

reef patrol
#

Like I said "used to" meaning the normal game 😄

astral haven
#

what makes people sick in vr is moving when your body doesnt

#

and alyx's system is by far the best example of that working

#

but it has pretty high requirements, and you cannot have much latency

#

quest is just not good enough

thick elk
#

It helps for sure, but doesn't completely solve it. I was using a Valve Index

astral haven
#

yea then it was the pc

thick elk
#

Even after gpu and cpu upgrade, as the frametimes were fine

astral haven
#

its super hard to hold 120 in alyx even on a relatively high spec pc

thick elk
#

Could be, but I think the main reason was probably that I forced stick movement and then tried teleporting to see if it helped when I was already getting vr sickness

astral haven
thick elk
#

I should try it again sometime on my current system with teleport movement, to see if it is better now.

#

This is something I thought about for a while, but just haven't gotten around to actually do.

pale sigil
#

Do you think covering a glass side panel with cardboard will be fine? Xd

thick elk
#

gaming time is somewhat limited and I nowadays tend to focus more on one game than scattershot.

astral haven
#

make sure you disable virtualization when playing, for flatscreen the minor improvements are whatever, for vr, minor performance penalties can be the difference between half an hour and fine forever

thick elk
#

Should also look into if the situation has improved on linux with VR, used to be somewhat problematic. Rebooting for it also puts up an extra barrier.

astral haven
#

oh yea linux probably wont work well

digital cliff
#

it's still garbage afaik

thick elk
#

Okay good to know

astral haven
#

and older amd cards are also out

6000 or newer or nvidia

#

and ive heard issues on 6000 too

#

so ymmv

thick elk
#

Using a 7900xt + 7800x3d so that should still be fine. Only thing that does throw a wrench in things is windows really likes to do background processes if you haven't used it in months.

#

But really it's all something that can be overcome, just a collection of hurdles that make me less prone to play a vr game.

astral haven
astral haven
pale sigil
#

So ye

thick elk

At some point I will get back into it but I would have to say for a while, my gaming time is VR time. At the very least I can be sure that I won't be over consuming.

Try .local

cursive summit
#

localhost?

thick elk
#

The difference between .local and .internal is that .local is not intended to work with dns but .internal is.

cursive summit
#

I have no clue what .local is or how it works

#

Just typing ".local" in address bar simply does a search

thick elk
#

connecting to a device on your network it could be something like hostname.local

#

that's how it was meant to be used

#

let's say you have a sever called garbageserv with a webinterface, you could go to garbageserv.local and connect to it that way.

cursive summit
#

Mmmm I sure love my garbage sewers

thick elk
#

.internal is meant as something you could point to on a dns-server on your router, lets say you want to host an internal web-page you could use somewebapp.internal and have the dns point to the right place in your local dns-server (for example on the router).

astral haven
thick elk
#

It can work yes, but it is not meant to be used like that.

astral haven
#

no, thats the only way it can work

thick elk
#

it's meant to be used with mDNS / zerofconf

astral haven
#

uh since when?

#

just because mdns inherited the old standard doesnt mean its exclusively for that

thick elk
#

Either way as far as I understand the icann decided on .internal as a distinct name meant to be resolved via a dns-server where .local would remain outside of the dns and is used for devices announcing themselves.
Even if it were an old standard it has esteblished uses now. So good to keep them separate to avoid conflict.

astral haven
#

Yup
Most folks have switched dns to .localdomain
Pihole uses .LAN

thick elk
#

Now we have .internal as an official standard.

What’s the difference between the 60he + and the 60he cuz if I want I can just get it shipped now but it says it will be the prebuilt 60he not the 60he+

it would be so fucking funny if IFS opening up is only going to be used for packaing and nobody using the nodes lol

cursive summit
#

How can you use it only for packaging without using Intel nodes?

#

Aren't those foundries configured for Intel's own designs?

ashen spindle
#

the article describes how the packaing works

cursive summit

They kinda did not

so you have your answer

its fine

qhd

reef patrol
fair gull

so its not a gpu issue but your expectations are the issue

reef patrol
#

What CPU do you have?

cosmic thunder
#

i have intel core i5 10400f

#

planning to upgrade to 15th gen

reef patrol
#

Lowering the settings might be a temporary solution.

cosmic thunder
#

its already at the lowest

fair gull
#

also i think i saw even 4090s struggle with the game on lowest settings

#

not going over 200fps

#

(at qhd ofc)

#

i think the only way to get to over 200fps in general is frame generation

cosmic thunder
#

that fps boosting feature using ai?

fair gull
#

its not fps boosting but making up new frames that the game has not given to the graphics card

#

so they may or may not be whats actually going to happen

#

or has happened
