@pale sigil is a professional bystander

exotic quiver
#

Ok

#

Either these two

#

Or these right ?

woven laurel
#

why go for an old ryzen chipset?

reef patrol
#

Becuase they already have the RAM and motherboard I'd assume?

#

Could probably find a used 5800X3D though.

woven laurel
#

thats why im asking the question anders

final flame
#

it's a decision of either upgradability or value for the money

exotic quiver
#

B450 motherboard

#

That’s my motherboard

reef patrol
exotic quiver
#

Calslock and ssuvac recommended these

umbral heron
#

If you don't care about ray-tracing and DLSS, 7800XT is very solid GPU, I'd recommend 👍

exotic quiver
#

What’s ray tracing

#

And dlss

woven laurel
#

i would wai5lt for ryzen 8000

stuck surge
#

and cuda cores

#

And reflex

ashen spindle
#

Throwing around random words doesn’t do anything

stuck surge
#

Dlss is superior to any upscaling technology

#

raytracing is just a way to render lighting

ashen spindle
#

power spikes if more or less the same and if you have fitting psu it doesnt change anything anyway

#

driver stability is same for both companies

stuck surge
ashen spindle
#

cuda cores 99% of gamers never use

exotic quiver
#

Is ray tracing and dlss needed

ashen spindle
#

no

stuck surge
#

I have first hand experience with that

exotic quiver
#

Is that import

ashen spindle
#

especially not for esports games

#

raytracing lowers fps quite a lot

stuck surge
#

its important when you want to play games at higher fps/resolution

exotic quiver
#

Ahh ok

umbral heron
stuck surge
#

raytracing is still uhhh gimmicy in terms of that gpus still have years to make rt perforkance bettsr

stuck surge
ashen spindle
#

no??

stuck surge
#

Yes

umbral heron
#

5 years ago maybe duck_sip

stuck surge
#

happened to me and a lot of other people

#

One day i tried to launch mhw and the game crashed at startup because of a driver update

ashen spindle
#

anecdotal evidence doesnt matter or me having no issues on amd and tons of issues on nvidia means amd is perfect

umbral heron
#

Catalyst was a piece of junk software
Adrenaline is ok though

stuck surge
#

This is not anectodal

#

Check amd forums

ashen spindle
#

your experience is anecdotal

stuck surge
#

It was reported here

ashen spindle
#

im not saying it never happens, but nvidia drivers also cause issues

#

hence they are about equal

umbral heron
#

On forums you'll mostly find people complaining, who goes to forums if everything works as intended duck_sip

stuck surge
#

either way i dont care, thats my experience from using both cards

#

Nvidia drivers never failed me

ashen spindle
#

so its literally anecdotal

old marlin
#

nvidia never have issues Clueless

#

amd has never failed me

#

very anecdotal tho

#

I was just lucky and dodged bigger issues

#

same goes for nvidia tho

ashen spindle
#

"this is not anecdotal, it's based on my anecdotal experience"

old marlin
#

amd software is infinetley better than nvidia tho

stuck surge
#

besides that nvidia obviously sucks in terms of that you need to buy like 4080 to have the vram.amount that makes sense

stuck surge
teal mantle
#

i just moved my pc, nothing taken out, no foam inside, and only thing broken is my wifi antenna lmao

ashen spindle
#

do you know how many 4080/4090 buyers had to deal with blackscreens either after a while or since first plugging in the card because they messed up and you had to update vbios on the cards manually?

#

that doesnt mean I now say amd is better just because that one thing never happend on any of their recent cards

old marlin
#

or how many nvidia launches were plagued with hardware issues

ashen spindle
#

space invaders memory corruption will never not be funny indeed

old marlin
#

overheating vram on the back of the card

pale sigil
#

I see we are having the driver argument

old marlin
#

the usual one

ashen spindle
#

not really we just have someone dropping buzzwords

old marlin
#

(funny because it is a stupid problem)

stuck surge
#

I wonder if anyone here has tried using oled monitor/tv for work

ashen spindle
#

yes works just fine

old marlin
#

even though I love my oled at home

#

idk if I would want one at work

umbral heron
#

Nah, for work only IPS duck_sip

stuck surge
#

Im wonderig whether the panel wont just die on you in under a year even if you do all the refresh cycles

old marlin
#

na

stuck surge
#

if you use it 8h a day+

ashen spindle
#

nope

old marlin
#

will prob get burn in

#

but also

#

just buy dell

ashen spindle
#

used my alienware for coding and gaming since release and got no burn in still

old marlin
#

I can seen a 16:9 rectangle

umbral heron
ashen spindle
#

I think I might start to see burn in in one spot because there are 9 white ui buttons I never move but I'll just move that around in the hud and that should be fine after some time again

old marlin
#

right after flying cars

umbral heron
#

You mean helicopters?

old marlin
#

no just this

#

but flying

vagrant pagoda
#

I was amazed Linus wanted a the wall

pale sigil
vagrant pagoda
#

Samsung makes a 150 inch micro led called "the wall"

#

146 inch 220k usd

#

He mentioned it in the home lan videi

old marlin
#

not the first time tho

vagrant pagoda
#

He had 2 extra circuits installed where his screen is just in case he manages to get one

#

As they use a fuck ton of power

#

Granted it will do like 1500 nits

#

150 inch's of 1500 nits is insane

#

Normal imax is 50nit, laser is 80

#

Most mid range home projectors get to that level at 150 inch

#

1500 nits at 150 inch is like 20k lumens of projection

stuck surge
#

i heard that microled can ez do 1000hz if the cable technology gets there

vagrant pagoda
#

Lol

#

Hz isn't what makes OLED/led good

stuck surge
#

i never said that

#

im just saying that the panel can do it right now

vagrant pagoda
#

You would never need 1000hz

stuck surge
#

you do

#

without bfi yea

#

1000hz is about where human vision limits end

#

probably

#

people were saying that about 30hz

#

but its scientifically proven that human eye can recognize shapes at 1000hz

#

and if you want analog real life like experience then you want something that the eye cant distinguish from reality

#

obviously it doesnt apply in the same way to movies which apply ridiculous amount of analog blur

#

but people were saying that you cant see a difference with 60hz to 120hz then 120hz to 240 hz...

#

and we are at 540hz panels

#

and this is still not enough to eliminate blur from motion

vagrant pagoda
#

The 150-200 is the maximum you can actually tell if it's a instantaneous video source like film

#

Issue is display tech isn't instant

stuck surge
#

well movies arent really made in 60hz even

#

so thats out of discussion for now

vagrant pagoda
#

That's a cost reason. Film is expensive and it wears out

#

Running film though a projector faster means it last less

#

So they stuck with 24

#

Film was slower than 24 pre-sound

#

Adding sound to film required 24 to be good enough quality

stuck surge
#

for games i would totally want at least 500hz

vagrant pagoda
#

Nah if you had a instant video source more than 200 is a waste

stuck surge
#

i dont know

#

never heard of people testing 200hz movie on 240hz screen

vagrant pagoda
#

Micro led/OLED at much more than 200 is almost at the limit of what you can see

#

But LCD tech is slower

vagrant pagoda
#

You need more light to capture images that fast

stuck surge
#

well i for sure hope that movies wont be stuck at low hz forever

vagrant pagoda
#

Lots of stuff is 30, 48 and 60

#

James Cameron is famous for it

umbral heron
#

Let just producers choose what framerates they prefer at movies
In case of movies and especially animation more fps doesn't equal better

stuck surge
#

in case of animation

#

its hard enough to draw fluid frames at 24hz

reef patrol
#

draw

stuck surge
#

if you mean 3d animation

#

then its the same thing

umbral heron
#

Both 2d and 3d, it doesn't have to be necessarily fluid

stuck surge
#

but animating models for 120hz woudl be definitely much harder

reef patrol
#

It's not harder to animate in a higher framerate. It takes more render time though.

pale sigil
#

On the topic of monitors though.

#

Im still kinda scared to go qdoled

#

I don't really wanna spend a lot and only have 3y warranty on burn in 😅

stuck surge
#

if new 4k 240hz qleds cost 2x as much as current oleds avaiable

#

im not buying it

pale sigil
#

I mean

#

I'm happy with 1440p/144hz

stuck surge
#

i cant go back after using 4k screen

pale sigil
#

I can and did

#

😅

vagrant pagoda
stuck surge
#

render time is becoming less of an issue when people have access to stuff like 4090, but like higher hz will show flaws in your animation obviously

reef patrol
#

If you consider that "more difficult", then your abilities to rig and animate are terrible. It's just adding more steps inbetween. You have all of the information for each step readily available.

At least with hand drawing, you need to account for motion in a real way and account for motion blur.

#

If you can't double the number of animation steps without considering it a difficult task, your 30fps animation was jank and stuttery to begin with.

Crazy how they even offer a 540h, tn vs oled

wait tn?

vagrant pagoda

wtf why is the tn panel so high

vagrant pagoda

You can drive to the hardest

fair gull
#

i thought we burned all TN panels years ago

vagrant pagoda

As it's a very robust panel

vagrant pagoda

Imagine the color difference between a 540hz TN and a qd-oled lol

You'd think the OLED was HDR in a side by side XD

@astral haven any recommendations for a camera for a beginner that’s not much more than 500$? Videos don’t matter but some might performance would be nice

subjects?

or types of photography?

astral haven

Combine that with the cost savings of getting a phone with a solid camera over a solid camera and a phone without

environmental portraiture uses the same lenses as landscape photos

#

generally

shadow minnow
#

I think they also want to do some architecture and such photos, let me ask but I am not sure if they know tbh

astral haven
#

for $500 its best to keep the phone, using a photoncam supported phone for high quality raws is often a good bet

shadow minnow
#

They currently have an iPhone 12 Pro Max

astral haven
#

if they can say what they dont like about it i can help with that?

vagrant pagoda

Even a 12pm has an amazing camera

😬

i wouldnt say amazing

vagrant pagoda

For how old it is?

astral haven

the 15 pro max gets kinda wrecked by a $400 mirrorless from 10 years ago

at least for photos

video is a different story

shadow minnow

Is what they say

astral haven
#

what?

shadow minnow
#

Same tbh

astral haven
#

the main strength of phones is how you can get all of the background in focus

vagrant pagoda
#

I mean hell you can just wide angle it lol

astral haven
#

nah the wide on iphones is still trash

#

but the main lens is good

vagrant pagoda
#

I ment if that was the only complaint

astral haven
#

yea wouldnt bother with getting anything else

shadow minnow
# astral haven what?

“like you have to be rather close to a person when taking a portrait on my phone (like in portrait mode) and most of the background is obscured”

astral haven
#

so turn off portrait mode?

vagrant pagoda
#

Or step back?

#

They haven't described WHY they have to be that close

astral haven
#

stepping back doesnt help, the iphone still background blurs portraits even from far (ish) away

astral haven

yea

vagrant pagoda

Ah didn't know that

shadow minnow

Turns out they were using portrait mode

They mentioned they’d want higher quality so I guess higher res

could also use the 540hz panel

without the gsync thing and with dyac

rich sand

theres already two 500hz monitors out there. the alienware was a shitty one (Expected) and theres asus

rich sand
rough osprey

it makes the monitor more expensive tho

having the 540hz panel for below 1k would be big

rich sand

in ur dreams

#

also, Displayport 2.1 in new monitors ain't gonna happen until stupid-ass nvidia puts DP 2.1 in their GPUs... i hope its 50th gen

ashen spindle
#

a good gsync module has the advantage of it making sure the panel meets certain standards, but unless they have a never version coming the hdmi limitation does make it kinda useless for that refresh range

#

maybe its the same 540 panel but they bin the batches and its 560 or something just to have the higher number lol

rough osprey
#

isnt 540 one already in a "oc" mode?

#

like you need to enable a extra setting to go from 500 to 540

yeah probably, they all do that at the top but maybe thius one does it further

yeah pointless overdrive modes are so bad

ulmb2 is goated

gusty kiln

I have strobing on my monitor, but it's not a good implementation

yeah, it's got strobing

the BenQ kind, which has an excellent reputation

astral haven

yea only better options are nvidia

gusty kiln

only 2 monitors with ULMB 2 atm

ashen spindle

since stuff will get diminishing returns so newer oled tech will make the drawbacks smaller while keeping advantages like contrast, bit harder to make tn look as nice xd

1440p 360hz OLED soon tm

thats the ppi of 32 inch 1440p which again ive got 32 inch 4k and i dont want to downgrade

astral haven

willing to go with still 4k but further away to keep the same ppd, but would prefer to not downgrade

astral haven
gusty kiln

yeah but is 1440p

#

that one is dual 4k

astral haven

if samsung made a 16:9 that basically was quad 1440p id be ok with that as long as it was 240hz

#

i wonder if the mouse and keyboard can control the internal menus (since its a smart tv)

smoky frigate
#

I can connect a wireless usb keyboard and control my projector running android that way, so probably

astral haven
#

yea but samsung is beyond lazy

smoky frigate
#

the lazy thing would probably be to just take a ready-made solution that worx lol

astral haven
#

which wouldnt have that

smoky frigate
#

what do these run under the hood?

astral haven
#

a normal usb hub would allow them to put the ports on the spec sheet

smoky frigate

oh my god what the fuck

astral haven

this has bad idea written all over it

you sure?

gusty kiln

at least 1 mainstream one

#

prob more, and defnitely a lot of smart watches with tizen

astral haven

im pretty sure that all of their feature phones ran it

according to wikipedo, it's just the Samsung Z series

gusty kiln

idk it happened for like 1 year then disappeared

damn up to Z4?

astral haven

they had a full series that ran for 3 years

gusty kiln
#

what market was this sold in?

smoky frigate

it was 80 bux when it was new...

astral haven
#

ooh the samsung nx1 ran tizen

#

the nx1 is actually an incredible mirrorless camera still

smoky frigate
#

weird to think a camera could host a web server. the future is truly now

astral haven

meh that used to be more common

#

my sony a5000 runs full on android, with actual android app support*

smoky frigate

oh, then it's probably Sony that made those

vagrant pagoda

It is how it worked, but it wasn't just that

astral haven

actually nope!
it was an official sd standard

its for when your fkn manufacturer yeets the sd reader from your laptop and phone -_-

smoky frigate

hehe, the last laptop I had came with it broken. not quite, actually, it would work under mysterious circumstances sometimes

old marlin

umbral heron

That too duck_sip

#

Wootility web would work on Firefox if it'd support webusb pepecry

thick elk
#

PWA apps I never really used. but webusb I do think firefox shouldn't be so stuborn about. Yes they are a security risk, but no more than the alternative.

#

That being said having a chromium based browser to control webusb devices from time to time is fine.

umbral heron
#

If it's so big security risk then they should just make it a toggle in settings, the same one there already is to set up tracking protection

#

For PWA apps I have to use Teams in work, and there's no Linux native app, so PWA it is

old marlin
#

I mean chrome just asks you "do you want to connect"

#

can't imagine a toggle being more secure than that

umbral heron
#

Yeah, but for those security nuts, so they could just toggle it and don't even bother with Firefox asking for permission
I have a feeling they'd complain about FF asking even more, "what if I miss-click it" duck_sip

umbral heron
#

Something like this would to the job

reef patrol
thick elk
#

Personally I think firefox should support webusb however it being a security concern cannot be denied.
The value of being able to control usb devices platform independant without require a separate program makes it worth the risks.

#

Especially since it already exists and chrome uses it.

reef patrol
#

As always - Make things an option, not a default and no one gets hurt.

umbral heron
#

Mozilla why?

fair gull
#

because mozilla and apple have security concerns about those apis as google just forced them into chromium

#

so webkit/safari and firefox wont have it

#

(google refuses to cooperate with both on making a secure standard btw)

umbral heron
#

I get that IT guys think of regular user as someone who can't even hold a hammer, but come on...

fair gull
#

im on mozillas and apples side on this one. if not for google cant just put whatever they want out there as a standard and force everyone to implement it

fair gull
#

and having worked tech support i also think people cant hold hammers

umbral heron
#

True pepecry

reef patrol
fair gull
#

because they want to just make the chrome one more secure ideally

reef patrol
#

That's just a lazy deflection.

#

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it stop jumping off a bridge. Even if you put a big fat sign warning people that doing so will harm or kill you.

You can't gatekeep people, because then they will look elsewhere for an open gate.

umbral heron
#

They kinda make it sound like it's hardware designers fault, because they don't make devices handle USB protocols properly

thick elk
#

I personally think with webusb, the benefits outweigh the risks but I cannot deny there are real security risks.
For example if someone were to clone wootility on a domain called wootility.dev then unsuspecting users who got there download the driver and it includes malware.
There are no good options to truely secure it, other than implement it and work with an active whitelist of services that are allowed to use it.

Looks like hashmap duck_sip

wheat plume
#

yeh in a DBMS

#

IDK WTF the last few lines mean

#

for 1st record etc etc

fair gull
#

its simple maths

#

In computing, the modulo operation returns the remainder or signed remainder of a division, after one number is divided by another (called the modulus of the operation).
Given two positive numbers a and n, a modulo n (often abbreviated as a mod n) is the remainder of the Euclidean division of a by n, where a is the dividend and n is the divisor....

umbral heron
#

Phone is being used as hash function input
So, you take phone number from first record, do mod 10 on it, and it gives you the bucket where you should store it

#

Then second and so on

#

Mod 10 is simply put last digit of a number

wheat plume
#

so, this stores record data as hash instead of the actual data?

#

that cuts down on storage space but surely it makes it harder to process when needed in a query?

umbral heron
#

Nah, it still stores data, but uses hash to figure out where to store it

fair gull
#

it basically just is a function to split up a big dataset into small sets. and running another phonenumber through the hash youd know which small set to find the record in and then you can query against a smaller set

umbral heron
#

Also hash functions are irreversible, so... kinda hard to store data that way duck_bopping

fair gull
#

ofc you can do this hashing up to where your input results in the right entry right away

ashen spindle
fair gull
#

otherwise you may as well query without hashes if hashing takes too long

Of course, if they allowed people to use it, they may as well have had a bios option to enable avx512 by disabling the ecores.

ashen spindle

more like it shows they never fixed the avx512 issues alder lake had

AMD would in this case probably just have made it a bios toggle and label it experimental or something.
That would of course have been best. Still without issues the chips run at lower frequencies with avx512 and enabling it would require some extra validation runs, not needed on the chips with it enabled.
So it could also be a choice here, even if avx512 no longer has issues.

I would buy a 7900xtx if it weren't for the idle power draw and general power draw

#

I mean they are, sales aren't that great

#

lol what else are they going to do

multi die isnt causing any issue

gusty kiln
#

I was agreeing with you

ashen spindle
#

and yeah CES announcement I think

gusty kiln
#

they are = they took the L

Ray-tracing dogekek

ashen spindle
#

rdna3 is selling better than 2 ironically

rough osprey
#

lol

#

Didn't the latest drivers not fix idle power?

gusty kiln

#

we're still 3 gens on nvidia away from raytracing being worth it I'd say

umbral heron
#

I dunno, I couldn't care less about ray-tracing, in most cases it looks nearly identical to well made cubemaps

ashen spindle
#

more if we talk full rt scenes

umbral heron
#

There has to be dark environment with lots of reflective surfaces and light sources to really see the difference

ashen spindle
#

to make it so you can do a scene with rull RT without fallbacks you need a lot more samples, and then its not about making it look much better but having the ability to cut away cubemaps when you get light just from having the lightsource where it is

umbral heron
#

At the cost of lots of computing power and dedicated hardware, so not that great of a trade-off

ashen spindle
#

I mean that's what gpus do with rasterising currently

#

big chips dedicated for that

gusty kiln
#

RDNA4 will finally reach 4090 perf

ashen spindle
#

I'm more curious about how well nvidia can make the transition to multi chips when they have to

#

high-na euv halfs the reticle limit and currently big nvidia gpus are basically max die size chunks of silicon

gusty kiln
#

also AMD licked 141 today but it seems a lot of people cashed in

umbral heron
#

Nah, I remember start of 3D accelerators duck_sip

ashen spindle
#

but dgpu is still the least important market for amd so it's getting the lowest priority

gusty kiln
#

no one is anymore

ashen spindle
#

amd is less a graphics company than nvidia is xD

umbral heron
#

AMD is also in CPU and embedded markets after all

yeah 360hz will do that

data center is amds biggest net profit and its growing

gusty kiln
#

qualcomm or intel with the largest amount of GPU per individual device?

umbral heron
#

Xilinx is mostly FPGA PeepoShrug

ashen spindle
#

yeah embedded includes xilinx now

ashen spindle
#

then you include mi300 being the fastet ramp to >2Bil they had and that is going to be even more data center revenue

umbral heron
gusty kiln
astral haven
#

pretty sure its qualcomm now

gusty kiln
#

yeah i would guess qualcomm

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah easily with igpus

astral haven
#

yea by a huge margin

gusty kiln
#

but we are forgetting apple

#

wait

astral haven
#

nope

gusty kiln
#

whats the apple vs andorid market share?

astral haven
#

apple makes less than half the money

umbral heron
#

70/30 worldwide?

astral haven
#

and average sold apple device price is over 2x the average android device sold
