I bet that in the base regions with his current mic he can get some pretty good improvement with free software.
Besides that I have not tried foam or anything like that, but eq is really a big thing as room effects on speakers are rather huge.

But using my relatively cheap measurement microphone and loading up a tuned eq profile really makes a night and day difference
