It's funny how these are better than ours havo

#

Also YouTube is weirdly pissing me off

#

I think they have trackers on my browser, cause I recently revisited an old twitch streamer that I haven't watched for ages, their content has changed as well that has absolutely nothing to do with my interests

#

I hate cars, I don't like anything that has anything to do with cars as its main focus, however this streamer does and they stream cars primarily

#

So on Twitch, I visited a stream of theirs where apparently EA released some new motorcross game and so I was like "it's EA, it's prolly shit", watched for about 2 hours and left

#

Why now 2 days later is my youtube feed full of EA motorcross game videos

#

This is genuinely concerning

AMD Risc-V processor?

Why is it only 32bit

#

Why's it 28nm?

Is x86 and risc that different lol

The MicroBlaze is a soft microprocessor core designed for Xilinx field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). As a soft-core processor, MicroBlaze is implemented entirely in the general-purpose memory and logic fabric of Xilinx FPGAs.
MicroBlaze was introduced in 2002.

I'm looking for some tips n tricks

cursive summit

knotty summit
#

I need a new mic

#

Something like this

cursive summit
#

Ah, these

knotty summit
#

Nah I'm just looking at a new mic to buy

#

And an arm

cursive summit

You sure you don't want to get a mic arm and something good?

hollow prism

thats an issue in all aspects of this hobby

cursive summit
#

Are you planning to bother with XLR

#

Or do you want some painless USB

knotty summit
#

Painless USB for now

cursive summit
#

XLR far better quality, but USB is more than good enough

knotty summit
#

Yeah I know

cursive summit
#

Well, i have this microphone and I am really happy with it

knotty summit
#

It's for streaming but I don't want to get a heck ton of things on my table as I'm moving a lot

hollow prism
#

HyperX QuadCast

#

not a bad USB

cursive summit

I bought Marantz MPM-2000U for 100 euros

#

If you are streaming, buy proper shit, not gaming trash

knotty summit
#

I know LOL

#

I don't know what tho

cursive summit
#

Marantz is good, AudioTechnica is good

#

Again, I have Marantz MPM-2000U

#

If you have good headphones, I can pop into voice chat and talk for a bit

Legendary AT2020 is nowadays in USB https://www.audio-technica.com/en-eu/at2020usb

cursive summit
hollow prism
#

look up the quadcast im telling you

knotty summit

Quadcast is eh, I don't feel like it's any good

cursive summit
#

You can always be a basic bitch though and get the Blue Yeti

knotty summit
#

It's like agaming mic

hollow prism
#

as far as usb mics go its pretty solid

knotty summit
#

Nah Blue Yeti is shit

cursive summit
#

Nothing really wrong with blue yeti

knotty summit
hollow prism
#

and if money is a limiting factor you only have so many options man

knotty summit
#

Well I'd rather not buy something that I'll switch in about 1-2 yrs

#

And give 100s of euros

cursive summit
#

There's the Movo UM700 and Samson Q2U

#

Rode makes the RODE NT-USB

knotty summit
#

Not only for RGB but for idk, just how it sounds

#

And the fact that it can go XLR too

cursive summit
#

The absolute good quality minimum is at2020 with a behringer xlr interface

#

About 130-140

#

But the quality is far higher than USB

knotty summit
#

Yeah ik

knotty summit

Yeah

#

Also that

cursive summit
#

15$ clip ons are good enough

#

Unless you are actually recording, what's the point of getting a good mic lol

knotty summit
#

I use my 2e clip on for streaming and it's great only issue I have is noise that is sometimes in bg

#

Sound from it is good

#

I don't need some XLR full desk 2nd PC streaming setup

#

I'm doing it for fun for now atleast

knotty summit

like wise

I'll risk it with the mic I sent and hope it atleast works better than my clip on

hollow prism

samething happened to me last month, had to RMA my gpu

steep creek
#

Which one are you interested in, v?

#

Yeah sounds good

#

I’d be fine with that too most likely

ashen spindle
#

yup thats why m3 pro got nerved compared to m2 pro, too much value cant have that in an apple offering

vagrant pagoda
#

I mean

#

They perform faster

#

Minus the cuts

vagrant pagoda
#

How is that nerf

ashen spindle
#

the offering relative to the rest of the stack got nerfed

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah but the cut to more e core will give better battery life

#

The leaks are it's 14% faster single thread like all the M3, but only 5% faster multicore

steep creek
#

Max 14” starts at 4350$ here😬

ashen spindle
#

m3pro literally has less transistors than m2 pro lmfao

#

its not a worse chip sure

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes it has more e cores than the M2

#

For the 12 core

#

6:6 vs 8:4

ashen spindle
#

still got an obvious cut to save on cost and/or get people pushed towards the other options

vagrant pagoda
#

Thermals

#

Etc

steep creek
#

I’m curious to see how fingerprint resistant the space black one is lol

vagrant pagoda
#

I think the difference is because the p-gpu pairing wasnt great for the pro

#

So they lowered p cores

#

M2 pro was 8:4 with 19c GPU, max was 8:4 with 38c gpu

#

Now it's 6:6 with 18 and 12:4 with 40

#

M3 at 4:4 with 10

compact scaffold
#

it starts up for a few seconds then turns off

#

I know nothing about computers btw

ashen spindle
#

not like its a console lol, plenty of people that could do with more cpu and same gpu

vagrant pagoda

Now it's better scaling

vagrant pagoda

vagrant pagoda
vagrant pagoda
#

shadow minnow
ashen spindle
#

Lot of vram
wat

vagrant pagoda
ashen spindle
#

yeah thats not apple specific though

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes it is

#

What other true APu can you get ?

ashen spindle
#

anyway, chips are expensive, the pro was offering relatively good deals before, whats so hard to imagine they wanted to cut costs when they can

vagrant pagoda
#

That isn't a console

vagrant pagoda
#

They didn't downgrade it

#

Lol

ashen spindle
#

I didnt say it's worse than the m2 pro still

vagrant pagoda
#

It just didn't get as big of a bump as m3 and m3 max

#

The stack has better scaling now

wraith swan
#

Yes

ashen spindle
#

the pro was cut down inside the m3 line compared to the others

vagrant pagoda
#

The max is a monster now lol

#

I mean I've used a M1 8gb

#

Zero issues with daily tasks

steep creek
#

upgrading the base m3 from 8 to 16 only saves about 300 ish euros from the m3 pro, so might as well get that then imo

vagrant pagoda
#

M3 will get longer battery life

#

And you're going from air to pro

steep creek
#

thats true, but im fine with anything over 10 hours personally hah

vagrant pagoda
#

The base M3 is silly in the pro though

#

And what's the base ram in its competition

#

Oh yeah 8gb of solder ram

#

Which is way way less useable

#

Lmao

compact scaffold
#

And is the battery the like silver coin looking thing

vagrant pagoda
#

Macos almost better with 8gb than win 11 is with 16gb

analog sinew

Question: To pick up the 14th gen refresh now or wait till late next year for 15th gen to release? (currently have i7-9900k , does the job but im at 100% utilization on most title and when streaming)

ashen spindle
#

Personally I'm waiting for Zen5 earlier next year

#

15th gen will be towards the end of next year too

#

not earlier

cursive summit
reef patrol
#

hollow prism
cursive summit
ashen spindle

hollow prism
#

yeah, you're thinking zen5 is gunna come out on top over the 15th gen when they both release?

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

I think zen5 will be on top as well as 2-3 quarters out earlier

reef patrol
#

They announced the whole link thing a while ago. And we had a whole debate about it then. havo

hollow prism
#

prices isnt the issue, i just want the best possible piece of hardware i can get at the time so i dont have to buy another one for 5-6 years

ashen spindle
#

zen5 server chips are out in the hands of first big customers which is why I think CES is a time they could announce it and release some weeks later

hollow prism
#

alright i guess ill hold out for a bit longer and see the bench marks and pricing of zen 5 compared to 14th gen

#

waiting a few months sounds alot better then pretty much a whole year for 15th gen 😂

#

Had to use my old 970 ftw3 for a few weeks waiting for my RMA to come back O_o

ashen spindle
#

oh no haha

hollow prism
#

trying to play modern warfare at like 30-40 fps was fun

#

but we back to 100+ most of the time with the strix 3080

#

everything is good in the build besides the damn 9700k holding it back

thick elk
#

You could just get zen4 right now, waiting is something you can keep doing forever because there is always something new around the corner.

#

Considering the competition value wise I doubt zen5 is going to make huge waves.

hollow prism
#

oh yeah we're all to familiar with the tech catch up game 😂

#

but thats exactly why i wait for 5-7 years between upgrades to get the most bang for my buck because i can't be bothered upgrading every year

thick elk
#

I mostly skipped the last gpu generation because the price may drop. Now I bought an overpriced 7900xt which later dropped in price.
Honestly I am at peace with it.

hollow prism
#

yeah that was me with my strix 3080, had to enter the newegg shuffle for it but it was a bundle with a motherboard i dont even use

#

but it was a card i knew i wanted so i sent it and actually got picked surprisingly

#

should have sold it years ago but its just sitting around for now...

thick elk
#

What mobo is it?

hollow prism
#

ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-Plus WiFi 6

#

1464 for the bundle

#

so 1200 for the card and 300 for the board about

thick elk
#

Kind of sucks as a motherboard, one gen later and you could have gotten a decentish upgrade for cheap cpu wise a but 11th and 10th gen, not really interesting at all.

Guess the lack of emulation support in the past put them at a disadvantage

Either that or the game is scripted different, cuz even some games on Xbox classic old ones have their quirks

Those are not games I have actually played either.

hollow prism

the x3d's weirdness when it comes to high ram speeds

#

true, just didnt know if what i said earlier made sense and it just so happened he made the exact video a few hours later

ashen spindle
#

like I assume with a 3080 you're not running a 1080p60hz screen right?

#

in which case fast memory wont even matter

hollow prism
#

correct

#

well 50/50

#

one 1440 and one 1080

cursive summit
#

Hell no

#

1440p

hollow prism
#

4k isnt worth playing even if you could

#

unless its a single player game i guess

#

but nothing competitive

#

and i can confirm the strix 3080 can't support 4k

#

well maybe 60 fps

ashen spindle
#

yeah 1440p means you barely even notice the difference of jedec or OC'd ram so no issues even if you get a board/ram combo that doesnt do high frequency

#

and that is assuming it all stays the same

#

but of course both amd or intel could have other issues for any new release

hollow prism
#

this is true

#

but yeah for my "normal" use case the different would be minimal

#

just a fair bit of reports of weird issues when booting with higher frequency ram on the 3d chips

#

we're talking about ram not a cpu

ashen spindle
#

yes, those are the ram speeds you get on ddr5

#

and the ram controller in the cpu matters too

thick elk
#

Been a while since I last a JayzNonSense video.
The 7950x3d is not the best CPU though.
Wouldn't surprise me if his cpu didn't actually run stable at -30 offset.

ashen spindle
#

It definitely isn't a one off, that is true

#

but it both got better and higher resolution means memory is less important, with v cache doubly so

cursive summit
thick elk
#

Actually got somewhat similar issues from what he described for a bit. But figured it was unlikely to be memory related as they mostly happened during idle, where I would expect memory related crashes not to be centered around my pc idling.
Bumped the offset a bit and it fixed it.

You seem perplexed, what bothers you

Change isn't always positive

#

I have a good reason I don't like 11

#

I don't like UI, at all

#

Or the extra hardware tax

#

Or extra spyware they keep implementing

#

More bloat, etc

#

I virtually never had a good PC up until my late teens, do you have any clue how much PTSD after all these years I still get after opening task manager?

#

XP was like 200mb of RAM, 7 used up to a gig

#

Now 10 is like 6-8 gigs of RAM just idle

#

I hate bloat

misty saffron
#

windows 11 ui is much better than 10

#

also, that

cursive summit
#

11 is just a shite attempt at copying mac and I have no interest in it

ashen spindle

11 doesnt use more ram and allocated ram != ram used that the OS blocks and doesnt give you if needed

cursive summit
#

Why are you trying to gang up against my dislike of 11 anyways, I'll just stick to 10 LTSC once 10 expires

#

After that I might just use Linux or whatever

ashen spindle
#

oh you can prefer 10 over 11 all day, but if you say things like it eats more ram that just is false information

dusky herald
#

i mean 10 LTSC is better than plain 10 if you want more security updates for it

#

think itll probably last through 11's life unless they decide to make 11 LTSC

cursive summit
dusky herald
#

might as well use arch linux or gentoo then

#

with nothing but a window manager and barely anything installed

misty saffron

i mean i use arch on one of my gaming laptop's partitions but i run full on gnome and a decent amount of things installed so its far from lightweight

steep creek

You’ll see that macOS “uses” almost all of the memory while just in safari for example. Doesn’t mean it’s running out of memory

ashen spindle

so install a script that makes task manager show only the ram your tools use so it's less but just shows false information

would make it better then by that logic

vagrant pagoda
#

I am thinking of going back when I get am5

#

The igpu will be more than enough for desktop use in linux

dusky herald
#

at least you know 10 LTSC exists instead of using normal 10 after it loses support

cursive summit
#

I've known about it for a while tbf

vagrant pagoda
#

What we need is vfio GPU support

#

Then you can single GPU it

#

What's wrong with a framework

cursive summit
#

Maybe Apple can one of these days release PCs with proper discrete GPUs and then I can be a mac gamer

#

But hey, that will never happen

vagrant pagoda
#

None of the 3 big GPUs work on arm to start with

dusky herald
#

apple only pretends to care about gaming on mac

vagrant pagoda
#

So macos support is slim

#

Apple might make a workstation GPU though

steep creek

And Apple I’m pretty sure wants full control of the hardware & software

Apple really cares about gaming, believe

cursive summit

But muh resident evil 8

dusky herald
#

yeah but a lot of games just dont care about making mac compatible versions

#

yes theres a decent chunk that work but a mac isnt really a gaming machine because of that

cursive summit
#

I doubt mac users really game in general, they prolly have a windows for that

dusky herald
#

my mac is basically just a working laptop

#

i mean i do have a couple games on there but its mostly just emulation

ashen spindle
#

valve was willing to basically do wine on mac but apple doesnt want to give up control so it's not fair saying valve is the one not doing it

cursive summit
#

I fail to see much use in using a mac anyways even in working scenarios, why would I downgrade from my windows rig

ashen spindle
#

and macs are expensive but that doesnt mean owners all have the money for a 4090 pc for gaming in addition

dusky herald
ashen spindle
#

I would bet apple is making it hard on the sales cut

#

yes

astral haven
#

if you can convince your users to pass the dark pattern messages that apple puts in the way

steep creek
#

It might probably happen eventually, when intel mac spare parts run out and they become vintage lol

dusky herald
astral haven

you

dusky herald

either that or through brew

astral haven
#

gotta remember most users are not you

dusky herald
#

i always seem to forget brew exists lmao

#

even though i have it installed and working through my spotlight replacement

ashen spindle
#

it's all about making it work for the dumbest acceptable user

#

not for people who know cmd commands on comand

astral haven
#

i install all of my apps on mac via MDM, and id be shocked if that wasnt more common than via package lmao

dusky herald
#

(raycast is the spotlight replacer i use)

ashen spindle
#

its about people even knowing that exists lol

dusky herald
#

honestly though i find i just open the command line to use brew anyways

dusky herald
#

yeah i dont think the average user is gonna figure out how to install brew

#

let alone something like a tiling window manager (which ive set up on my mac, specifically yabai)

#

apparently neofetch even detects yabai is running and lists it as my WM

#

are people even actually scared by the warning popups that macos shows when installing any app via dmg

#

im honestly not sure

#

usually though i get more suspicious if an app asks me to right click open it cause that means its unsigned

#

wait what button

#

i dont remember having to enable a setting to install dmg apps

#

ah

#

most apps i install from dmg arent unsigned

#

usually im more wary of an app if it is unsigned

#

iirc yabai came unsigned but i realized i was setting it up wrong and i actually had to enable it through brew services

#

ah i see i dont use much FOSS stuff on my mac aside from like yabai and libreoffice and a handful of brew packages

#

my linux install has more FOSS apps installed but yeah

#

actually i forgor i have krita and gimp on my mac too just in case i need them for some reason but usually i use the art program i actually paid for

#

oh hey a fellow affinity user

#

honestly affinity is like an absolute photoshop killer im surprised how little i see it around the place

#

i like how affinity adds actual features and shit a lot of the time

#

meanwhile photoshops just cramming as much AI as they can into the program

#

like i cant tell you how useful fill and pattern layers are and im shocked photoshop doesnt have them

#

and thats just like one of the more basic features affinity has that have been around for ages

final flame
#

Affinity is alright, not necessarily a Photoshop killer

dusky herald
#

i mean it basically killed photoshop for me

final flame
#

Still has the need for a lot of qol

dusky herald
#

i get its not gonna replace photoshop as the industry standard

dusky herald
#

yeah thats why i switched to affinity

#

but also i find all the affinity exclusive features that arent in photoshop are invaluable to my workflow

#

funnily i got certified in photoshop in high school and the certification basically beat into my head how important nondestructive actions are when editing in photoshop/etc

#

and well affinity has infinitely more nondestructive options than photoshop

#

so the switch was a nobrainer

#

im honestly not sure if the channel mixer adjustment layer is in photoshop but imo its the most powerful adjustment layer in affinity

boreal kiln
dusky herald
final flame
#

Specifically adjustment layer

dusky herald
boreal kiln
#

ya last time i tried affinity the moment i think you went to develop the raw and load it in it was pretty much baked and you had to go all the way back to make adjustments unlike in photoshop where i could just reopen acr and make minor changes without having to start all over

dusky herald
#

honestly i think they should add hsv versions of the hue, saturation, color, and luminosity blend modes into affinity like krita has
that would basically make it the perfect art program imo but its not like absolutely needed i have techniques to pull stuff like that off regardless and with better quality / more options using channel mixer shenanigans

final flame
#

Camera raw is absurdly powerful when you add it to a smart object

Not to mention the flexibility of nesting objects with smart objects, idk if there even is a limit to how much you can nest within

#

Since it's a psb file format for smart objects I can imagine you'd probably be only limited by the maximum file size of psb

dusky herald
#

nondestructive raw is done by setting the output to a RAW layer from the develop persona

#

apparently it works now for me but it used to be greyed out in the past idk why

boreal kiln
#

i think the last time i tried it was around 2020 or something

dusky herald
boreal kiln
#

and i think the UI at the time was quite different from what im use to in photoshop

dusky herald
#

oh also @boreal kiln do you use a glass mousepad at all? or by glass in your bio do you mean glass skates

#

cause im curious how glass mousepads are

boreal kiln
#

iv been using photoshop for like 20+ years now

boreal kiln
#

its been interesting to use it

#

like tracking is awesome

#

but the micro adjusting and stopping is the bit i need to work on a little atm

dusky herald
#

you just gotta get used to the rest which takes a bit but i find once you get used to it its a far more powerful ui

#

i know in the past though the various snappable ui bits were under view and not window like they were in photoshop, you might have used a version of affinity where this was the case

#

they are under window now though

boreal kiln
#

what the performance like these days with it ?

dusky herald
#

im going to admit ive had some performance issues from time to time with affinity, probably cause theres often tons of stuff open other than affinity on my computer

#

and sometimes ive just worked with absurdly massive canvases which can cripple it when you have buttloads of layers

boreal kiln
#

windows or mac?

dusky herald
#

macOS, m2 macbook air

#

i kinda blame the fact i have a macbook air too

boreal kiln
#

i dont think its that tbh

#

photoshop runs find on a base m1 air for my potable setup

dusky herald
#

ive only really had performance issues on canvases multiple tens of thousands in horizontal/vertical resolution with thousands of layers

#

youre likely not gonna run into problems unless you really push it to its limits

#

also usually those performance issues happen when i work on said massive projects for long periods of time, as long as you save and reopen to clear the undo history it shouldnt overload

boreal kiln
#

most times ill use my desktop for editing over the air

dusky herald
#

but yeah you should be mostly fine

astral haven
dusky herald
#

i mean i have a project in affinity thats like 34k*12k pixels with like roughly 2000ish or more layers

#

thats the only project i have that causes affinity to crumble after editing extensively

astral haven
#

surprising

#

yea im only dealing with around 4x the resolution

dusky herald
#

yeah but also thats like 2000 layers of that

astral haven
#

maybe theyve improved in the past 2 years?

dusky herald
#

also affinity can open that insanely massive project just fine

astral haven
#

yea affinity was ez pz

dusky herald
#

its just affinity crumbles any time i duplicate roughly 1500 layers on accident on that massive canvas

astral haven
#

literally 1 layer, i just wanted to make some basic edits

dusky herald
#

which is expected cause it has to load 1500 layers into ram/swap

astral haven
#

its only a 700MB jpeg, shouldnt be that bad

boreal kiln
#

i dont think iv seen a jpg that big before

dusky herald
astral haven
boreal kiln
wheat plume
dusky herald
final flame
#

More like why are you not optimizing your layers at that point

dusky herald
boreal kiln
#

digital drawings ?

astral haven
final flame
#

I rarely go over 100 layers, and I almost never go over 200

astral haven
# astral haven

took a video at 200mm 1080p, scanned over the scene, separated out every frame into a jpeg, upres'd the jpeg with topaz, then fed the result into ICE

final flame
#

Nesting anything that can be condensed into a smart object when I can

boreal kiln
#

ice is so good for stitching

dusky herald
#

i think affinity doesnt exactly have smart objects

cursive summit
dusky herald
#

maybe i should try placing an .afphoto file inside of an affinity document

astral haven
cursive summit
#

I was always of the impression VMware was a bit of an overrated company

#

Looks like they have alright security engineers working for them

boreal kiln
astral haven
#

yea this image (i took) is tiny compared to the serious stuff

dusky herald
astral haven
#

i aint got a 2 gigapixel camera lol

dusky herald
#

oh

boreal kiln
dusky herald
#

iirc affinity actually has a great panorama stitching feature but i doubt itll beat out a specialized stitching program

#

you can actually refine the stitch after the automatic stitching to make it look better

astral haven
#

affinity cant handle even stitching just a few 108mp images from my smartphone, much less thousands of pictures that you need to do supertelephoto stitching

astral haven
#

yup

dusky herald
#

yeah then i dont think it'd work for gigapixel stuff

astral haven
#

most stitching programs including photoshop do

#

many can handle 400mp source files and stitching 3-4 of them together, but if you are starting with thousands of images, it just dies

#

its actually awful how in 10 years nothing has come to replace it

boreal kiln

this was about 12 photos for the stitch in photoshop low res sample

cursive summit
#

This is MediaTek trying to outcompete Qualcomm

late shell
#

Cause I heard with the latest Apple M chips the capacitors or something are so tiny that they can't go any further with the tech we have

ashen spindle
#

nah thats not whats happening

late shell
#

Ah, phones aren't my field, sorry

ashen spindle
#

they latest process node just isnt as great so the gain is less but it's not just that

late shell
#

I do computers as a hobby so I hear about what's going on sometimes

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

but we still get more transistors and smaller hardware chunks for years to come

late shell
#

It's amazing how small it's all becoming

#

I find it fascinating how quickly things progressed once we made computers

cursive summit
#

I cannot fathom how MediaTek is planning to have more than 8 hours or so of battery life with 4 giant performance cores, and 4 extra smaller performance cores

#

This doesn't make any sense

late shell
#

New battery tech or maybe a way to make the CPU more efficient?

cursive summit
#

What new battery tech

#

Batteries have been stagnant for decades

ashen spindle
#

simple, they dont use 4 of the same cores they have 3 lower clocked ones

late shell
#

Idk, there could be something

ashen spindle
#

not like they all run at total powerdraw all the time

astral haven
#

and they also have 4 efficiency cores

late shell
#

I was just guessing

#

Makes sense for it to be 4 weaker cores but how does that work but now I wanna know how they did it and how it works

astral haven
#

same way everyone has always done it

ashen spindle
#

lower clocks

astral haven
#

less cache, smaller compute units that run slower but use less power

ashen spindle
#

smaller cores that are made for lower clocks so more efficent but cant clock as high even if you give them more power

cursive summit
astral haven
#

and so does the 9300

cursive summit
#

This thing has 4

late shell
#

Ah, I obviously don't know the technicals of this

#

I just build and tinker

#

But I find it all neat

cursive summit
#

Per early reports yes only 1 X4 will run at "normal speeds" other 3 will be like, 2GHz or thereabouts

astral haven
cursive summit
#

That still doesn't excuse the fact these are 4 giant cores on an SoC where competitors only use 1

astral haven
#

difference isnt that big between big and small cores

#

and the difference is zero if the core is idle

ashen spindle
#

3 big at 2.8 vs 3 small at 3.2

#

its not like small cores are more efficent even at much higher clocks

#

you can also just donwclock the big ones

cursive summit
#

Considering X cores are far bigger than A720s? That's a big difference

astral haven
#

its just not

cursive summit
#

A lot more cache on the X4s over small cores

ashen spindle
#

so? die size doesnt linearly correlate to power consumption at a given clock

astral haven
#

a720 uses about 20%? less power at the same clock

#

and it does not like high clocks

#

id actually be shocked if the power usage was measurably different between an a720 at 3.2 vs a x4 at 2.8

cursive summit
#

X4s consume a crap ton more power though

astral haven
#

look at the graph

#

as the power increases, at the high end of the graph, the a720 becomes more power for the same performance as the x4

ashen spindle
#

it uses more power at higher performance, so just limit it to that part

on 1 core

#

the other 3 are 2.85

cursive summit
#

That's pretty damn insane considering 3.4GHz is peak boost clock as far as I can find

astral haven
#

paste the whole picture again, i thought he had unmuted me but it seems not

ashen spindle
#

you posted the link yourself vex so you should know what the cores are put at lol

#

god discord is still taking ages to uplod some messages, it just doesnt want to do the whole picture

cursive summit
#

Alright, I did some cross-comparisons and I will concede the point

#

Wait, no I won't

#

A720 is rated for 3.0 GHz max

#

At which point per Arm's graph it would be more powerful than a low boost X4

#

X4's on Mediatek are already boosted to close to 3GHz with 3.4GHz being max

astral haven
#

more power for the same performance isnt a good thing

cursive summit
#

The A720 here is virtually just substituting A500 series cores at very low boost clocks, 2GHz

ashen spindle
#

you also barely ever have all cores are full power so it's not like you can just compare it 1 to 1

astral haven
cursive summit
#

X4's are still at pretty damn high boosts, 2.85GHz on 3 and 1 at 3.25

#

Battery life is not going to like that

ashen spindle
#

don't think he read the legend of the graph dogekek

cursive summit
#

I did you muppet

astral haven
#

i mean it would have been nicer if the legend included numbers and units but so be it

cursive summit
#

At max power of A720 outdoes X4 in power efficiency and performance

#

Mediatek are going nowhere near 3GHz clocks with A720, they are for whatever reason clocking them at 2GHz only and completely omitting A520 cores

astral haven
#

the a720 on sd8g3 is 3.2ghz

and the a720 uses more power at 3.0ghz than a x4 at the same performance

cursive summit
#

So by downclocking some X4 cores and leaving 1 X4 core towards max clock, if anything Mediatek is shooting themselves in the foot by not using 2.8GHz or so A720s, you get less performance and less power efficiency

#

Again it makes no sense for Mediatek to use 4 X4 cores on a smartphone chip, Android isn't necessarily known for great battery life anyways

ashen spindle
#

uhhh no, at max a720 on that graph it uses MORE power than an x4 for the same performance

cursive summit
#

That's why I said around 2.8GHz

#

So that you are actually more power efficient than X4 at this spot

#

Why use X4 at all

ashen spindle
#

that is SiR not clocks on the x axis

cursive summit
#

What's SiR

ashen spindle
#

spec int rate

cursive summit
#

Isn't that representative of overall performance?

astral haven
#

facts: sd8 gen 3 gets good battery life, and the cores from the mediatek are more efficient at the rated lower clocks than the ones on the 8 gen 3 at their rated clocks

final flame

Replacing the normally liquid electrolyte with a solid one

cursive summit
#

That'd be cool, call me when they are implemented in consumer electronics

astral haven
#

theres also the graphene cathode batteries, got one of those in my backpack right now

#

most are currently graphite, but graphene is more efficient and lighter

ashen spindle
#

I just wish they would have some useable sodium or reflow batteries for home storage by now

#

would like to just not have big Li ones in the basement

astral haven
#

reflow im not so sure about

ashen spindle
#

yeah not most excited but redflow or something from australia has stuff working it seems just still not at scale production

#

like ye realistically I'm not worried about it blowing up but I'd rather not think about the Li fire situations if something else goes bad and starts it

astral haven
#

im happy to have lithium batteries as long as they are iron rather than normal heavier metals

#

sodium iron should be super cheap too

ashen spindle
#

maybe not first gen due to scales, but even if it needs more space for home storage that's totally fine still

#

might not be a choice for cars for a while but it's not like we need the super solution for every area at once

astral haven
#

even for cars actually tbh

#

we just need better charging infra for commutes

ashen spindle
#

I mean for cars if it gets twice as heavy it's not great for some time

astral haven
#

if the battery price is 1/4, for half the storage at the same weight, thats solid for cheap cars

#

my car's price (and the new model of the same car) is half battery

#

dropping from 40k to 25k for 100 miles of range is not bad at all

#

add on modern aero and you can get back to 200 miles of range sometimes

#

an aptera would go from 25k to closer to 15k with still around 150 mile range

#

and sodium iron is probably gonna be closer to 70% rather than 50% at the same weight

#

oooh and thats vs NCM not lifepo4 that aptera uses

#

so probably closer to 200 miles at the same weight rather than 250, but solid decrease in price

astral haven
#
rough osprey
#

would expect this more on a7 s iv

astral haven
#

nah, a7s is sensitivity not speed

rough osprey
#

its video tho

astral haven
#

no

#

a7s is sensitivity first video second

#

it just so happens that insane iso performance is good for video
