Other than making micro plastics

#

The stuff used to make Teflon, and its' decompensation products are toxic

old marlin
#

no even then it is quite bad

#

it's not toxic

#

but you can't really get it out of your body

#

since it accumulates somewhere

vagrant pagoda
#

It doesn't get in your blood unless you have an exposed cut

#

It's too inert to be absorbed via digestion

old marlin
#

gets in your lungs though

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes and because it's soft and slick it doesn't do damage

#

And you will eventually cough it out

#

Not saying it's good for tou

#

But it isn't bad as long as it stays ptfe

https://taenk.dk/kemi/english/avoid-ptfe-your-dental-floss
there is a link to the studies

"The study compared fluorinated substances in the blood of 178 women with their consumption patterns such as eating habits and the use of dental floss. The result shows a correlation between flossing with PTFE and higher levels of fluorinated substances in their blood. The study also underlines that more data is needed to establish the connection."

#

thats just one random study

#

If you think breathing dust isn't getting ingested I dont know what to tell you

vagrant pagoda
#

And none of that says ptfe is bad

fickle ore
#

moving goalposts

#

first it was that it is not bioavailable

vagrant pagoda
#

No

fickle ore
vagrant pagoda
#

And it isn't bioavailable

#

The ptfe is being directly introduced to the bloodstream when flossing

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes

#

That isn't bioavailablily

#

Anything can be found in your blood if you put it in the blood

#

Lol

#

If you eat ptfe it will not absorb into your bloodstream

fickle ore
#

You think abrading ptfe or ptfe dust doesnt have nano-micrometer wide particles that pass the blood-brain barrier?

vagrant pagoda
#

Again ptfe is inert

#

The literally use it in brain surgery

#

To support blood vessels

fickle ore
#

Oke bruv, believe what you must. Like said there is no evidence yet, but that is not fact that it doesn't do anything.

vagrant pagoda
#

They literally use PTFE in brain surgery and you're worried about somehow it going from mouse feet into your brain

fickle ore
#

straw man

vagrant pagoda
#

Facts are supported by evidence, that's what makes them facts

#

The fact is there is loads of evidence that ptfe is inert

#

And there is none that ptfe reacts negatively with the body.

fickle ore
#

if you understood what a fact is you wouldn't be touting it here

vagrant pagoda
#

What is a fact to you then

fickle ore
#

Irrelevant to the question at hand. With that said I'm out. I see nothing to gain here. UHMWPE tape is a good alternative to ptfe skates tho, but its not without its issues.

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah lower wear but with higher friction

vagrant pagoda
fickle ore
# vagrant pagoda By your own statement, isn't it just as bad it have pe vs ptfe.

I'm not qualified enough to answer. Maybe. I'm not sure if there is any evidence of polyethylene being endocrine disruptor. There are some papers saying it might be. But it's much more abrasion resistant material than PTFE so the dust problem should be lessened. I can't find the biological human half-life for uhmwpe, so I can't compare the two. Perhaps it is as bad as PTFE on that front since both are highly resistant and inert substances. Microplastics, their breakage pattern and resulting particle size and health effects are another topic.

vagrant pagoda
#

Thing is if you eat any foods made in a factory

#

You are ingesting PTFE and uhmw

#

PTFE is used in contact rated food lubricants

ashen spindle
#

threadripper?

fair gull
#

a cpu way better for the suggested workloads

thick elk
#

Also going threadripper is expensive to start but will be much more performant with cpu rendering.

#

I can see the upgrade making sense, still it is rather expensive for the gains

ashen spindle
#

if its for productivity more cost should easily be made up with the shorter times

fair gull
#

^

thick elk
#

It of course depends on the exact circumstances

fair gull
#

times money

thick elk
#

how much time is lost how much money do you have and so forth.

ashen spindle
#

?

#

threadripper is way ahead of this still

fair gull
#

unless we look at single core benchmarks for productivity... a threadripper will probably easily be way ahead of intel

fickle ore
#

Gratz for the upgrade

fair gull
#

welp the stock 7995wx easily beats the i9-14900k

thick elk
#

Not saying there is no uplift just questiioning the middle ground of spending €600+ on an upgrade for productivity when there are much stronger gains to be had for more money.
Just seems like a weird middle ground with a significant power increase.

fair gull
#

i did read

ashen spindle
#

more curious why the old system was a 12700k and not older TR if its for production

fair gull
#

threadripper

ashen spindle
#

threadripper

#

xeon-W then, same thing on intel just worse

fair gull
#

oh right xeon-w still exists

ashen spindle
#

why not intel workstation then, they also had options and now have some more

#

just trying to understand the usecase

fair gull
#

no one said that

ashen spindle
fair gull
#

its just a weird choice when you know you mainly do productive workloads

ashen spindle
#

I assumed gaming since that makes the most sense, if its not for that I'm just wondering why not a workstation setup if its a workstation

fair gull
#

its like using a lamborgini when you work for DHL and need to deliver 300 parcels a day

ashen spindle
#

I'm not even saying its a bad purchase because I dont know what you do that's why I'm asking

#

because it seems like a not ideal choice to most cases

thick elk
#

That being said a serious threadripper or xeon W is a lot more expensive and it depends on exactly how much money you have / rendering time.
Productivity cannot be generalized as it's often fairly specific.

#

That said It seems like a niche middle ground where the 14900k seems the best upgrade path.

ashen spindle
#

well if hes not saying whats it for I assume it's just a troll anyway, there might be some case where it makes sense, which is why I'm asking

#

that's why literally my first comment was a question

thick elk
#

Fair enough.

ashen spindle
#

but seems more like a troll than a genuine thing at this point

cursive summit
#

That's really damn high for AMD

fair gull
#

no one shat on your purchase

ashen spindle
#

how is asking a question shitting on it

#

if it makes sense its a good purchase, in most cases it would not be that is why I'm asking what the use is

#

but I'm not going to pretend that if you say you just put a 500$ bill on fire that I'd not call that stupid xD

thick elk
#

I would not call it $ 500 as the 12700k still has resale value

ashen spindle
#

no I meant as a case of literally doing that

#

if something is stupid I'm not sugarcoating it, if it has a use then I'm not shitting on it because it makes sense

fair gull
#

idc if they wasted money or not. im just interested why a self admitted productivity setup uses a mainly gaming opriented CPU (after telling us thats WE dont look at productivity benchmarks)

#

my assumption is it was a gaming setup and its just repurposed now

#

or trolling

thick elk
#

That itself is not surprising, as not all productivity workloads have enough time loss from using mainstream product to warrant the investment. Nor do productivity workloads always have to be professionally.
If rendering gives you an hour or two of downtime a week, cutting that in half for a certain amount of money may be worth it, going all in for a much more expensive upgrade would not be.

#

But yea circumstances would be good to hear here as it could be a good or bad upgrade depending on them.

ashen spindle
#

wouldnt even take a full sentence to mention that though unlike being all smug about "hurr I knew youd say that"

wait, apple and gaming? well.. if they manage to pull that off i am swtiching to mac

cursive summit
#

It doesn't make any sense to ignore gaming

#

Mac is a very big marketshare and devs 100% want to release games there

#

Just.. well.. Apple silicon isn't the best and you have to I imagine nearly completely rewrite games to play well with Mac, not worth it

hasty thunder
winter creek
#

i just want the OS. no need for their hardware

reef patrol
umbral heron
#

Well, MoltenVK works
And Valve isn't really keen on supporting gaming on macs, given the delay in new Steam client release and ditching support for CS2 for macs
Maybe Apple wants something akin to mobile ecosystem on macs, so they'd control it better

cursive summit
#

When they do, I'll be considering Mac then over Windows

rough osprey
#

lets see if they can release a good gpu first

cursive summit
#

Discrete one? The costs will be massive lol

#

They should collab with Intel for dGPU tech

#

I imagine Intel would be relatively cheap for them

rough osprey
#

or make the integrated one good

umbral heron
cursive summit
#

Or AMD, AMD has done dGPUs for them before

#

AMD is known to be really cheap and friendly with Sony, Microsoft, etc

#

Hmm, 90$ isn't a bad deal

old marlin
old marlin
#

salnotes zeros are stupid cheap

reef patrol
old marlin
#

yea obv

cursive summit
#

Tbf Mac could be a serious problem for Microsoft if Apple starts taking gaming seriously

#

But then again Apple lost Nuvia so Apple silicon will prolly go to shit so they are useless long term havo

umbral heron
#

One can dream...

old marlin
#

apple just doesn't have enough horsepower atm

#

and if they release a dedicated gaming system it will essentially be a console like thing

cursive summit
umbral heron
#

Apple could go Nintendo route, aiming for more casual player base, they have plenty of horsepower for that

rough osprey
#

they like mobile gaming

cursive summit
#

Oryon looks incredibly powerful

#

Could be a really big breakthrough on the mobile performance front for Android

#

Uh, right

#

I hope this fails and Oryon sees release

ashen spindle
#

Lawsuit won’t be done by the time it’s released and release is later half of 2024 so it’s competing against other stuff than they compare to now

cursive summit
#

Not much will release by 2025 though

#

M3 will, which we expect to be mediocre

#

Zen 5 which so far sounds like a +20% or so IPC uplift, pretty good but Nuvia seems to have it beat from the benchmarks Qualcomm provided

#

Arrowlake prolly will release, which again is prolly going to be ass

#

Battlemage? Might be integrated into iGPUs in mobile but I have little faith in them competing seriously

#

RDNA4 tbf could be interesting for mobile iGPU market

ashen spindle
#

What numbers did you look at to think it has zen5 and ARL beat

cursive summit
#

Qualcomm's own numbers they released

umbral heron
#

Intel may stir a bit in the GPU market, especially if they'll aim for low/mid-end market

cursive summit
#

I have heavy doubts Arrowlake or Zen 5 will compete with this at ultrabook level

#

Battlemage or RDNA4 isn't touching that either at ultrabook levels

ashen spindle
#

We meme about arrow lake because of the limited performance increase, not because its still so power hungry

#

And yes the gpu suite to test was 3dmark wildlife?

cursive summit
#

Wildfire Extreme

#

Which is pretty damn demanding last I remember reading

ashen spindle
#

No wildlife if some mobile suite from them

#

This isn’t firestrike or timespy

cursive summit
#

Again, I think that Snapdragon X Elite will be a major shakeup in the ultrabook market

#

Neither Intel nor AMD are ready for that thing

ashen spindle
#

Lol

umbral heron
#

Imma wait for independent benchmarks, not press releases dogekek

cursive summit
#

Gaming laptops and desktops will be just fine, that's not what Qualcomm are aiming at, methinks

#

But tablets, ultrabooks are getting pretty powerful

ashen spindle
#

This thing comes out when ARL is a thing and MTL likes Matches it in gpu already

cursive summit
#

AMD is ready for a shakeup of their own in fact

#

Strix Halo imo will be a big release

#

Been waiting for a product like Strix Halo for YEARS

#

And it's finally going to see the light of day next year, very big pogs

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

Top performance is not an increase, doesn’t mean it can’t be super power efficient or similar

cursive summit
#

But I think Snapdragon X Elite at low power levels will be unbeaten next year in mobile market

#

Intel in general does seem a bit clueless, not sure what they are good at anymore

#

Seems they are focusing on chipmaking fabs nowadays rather than releasing good cores

#

Servers Epyc are just better, Threadripper rips through Xeons, AMD sort of makes Intel consumer stacks look silly for the amount of money Intel wants for them

#

Mobile Intel I think is a bit better for now? More adoption for Intel there

umbral heron
#

I still don't understand why is Snapdragon X Elite
Windows on ARM is still wacky at best, and legacy app support, the very thing why Windows is so popular, is lacking heavily

cursive summit
ashen spindle
cursive summit
#

Microsoft tends to work with Intel/Nvidia/AMD to improve the OS experience for new features

#

Qualcomm could be the new big 4th player

umbral heron
cursive summit
#

Why do they need rosetta 2?

#

It runs natively, no?

#

Or is there some sort of emulation/translation layer there

halcyon moss
#

...

umbral heron
#

Overwhelmingly large share of apps on Windows are x86 targeted

#

That's why Windows 10/11 have WoW64, to run x86 apps on x64 OS

#

And with swap to ARM...

cursive summit
#

Can't be much worse than going from 32bit to 64bit havo

umbral heron
#

Oh, it will be much worse
With 32 -> 64 bit it's more or less memory mapping
With 64bit -> ARM it's whole new architecture

cursive summit
umbral heron
#

If they are to build whole ecosystem from the ground why just not swap to Apple, who already has it all established?

cursive summit
#

Who needs to swap to apple?

fair gull

old marlin
#

options for those will be windows and linux

wheat plume
#

companies caring about putting Linux on their laptops?? nah that wont happen ....

#

Well, Dell already did on some of their laptops I guess

fair gull
#

except it already is a thing for every big laptop brand?

wheat plume
#

every
no?

fair gull
#

theres always windows/linux(usually ubuntu) and no os

halcyon moss
#

yeah one or 2 models maybe

fair gull
#

i can only speak from the distributor side as i had to always watch out to order windows models

halcyon moss
#

but yeah.. doesnt matter much as you can install linux pretty easily

wheat plume
#

Dell, Lenovo, Hauwei... they are all I know who have Linux on some models

fair gull
#

hp, sony and asus also do

#

acer i cant exactly recall we didnt sell much of them

halcyon moss
#

freedos option is always fun

fair gull
#

oh thats another one yeah

#

thats usually sold as NOS though if youre a distributor

halcyon moss
#

that the.. we cant have it boot into nothing option

fair gull
#

yeah

#

NOS literally means no os

#

and its comes with freedos... an os

#

lol

halcyon moss
#

stop taking things so literally :p

fair gull
#

what world would we be in if it would be clearly labelled

#

smh

#

youre right

#

but yeah idk how it is in their own stores/online stores but they all definitely manufacture those 3 flavors or win/linux/nos

halcyon moss
#

not having to pay for windows is nice, but at oem level it doesnt make a huge difference

fair gull
#

well i was happy to buy nos devices for easier setup and the fact i dont get some dumb home or pro license we wouldnt have used

#

since it was usually deployed with an mak license

old marlin
#

I mean the ones that matter are dell, hp and lenovo PeepoShrug

#

all of them will give you basically any device with linux if you want it

fair gull
#

i dont actually think they have a massive incentive to push windows besides customers want it

old marlin
#

well they have to make sure their machines are windows compatible

#

by having tpm etc

#

whatever else ms asks for

#

and windows will be the most popular option

fair gull
#

yes but i dont think they get paid to sell windows over linux or nos

old marlin
#

ig also makes it easier for them to have their tools bloatware preinstalled

umbral heron
old marlin
#

but idk

fair gull
#

oh yeah their tools are usually all win only

umbral heron
#

HP has a lot of their drivers for Linux too strangely enough
But not that bloatware apps they include with laptops

old marlin
#

drivers are not the issue

fair gull
#

their drivers or the suppliers they buy stuff from that have linux drivers anyway

they rarely have custom drivers

they can improve the design

we likely are just gonna see pretty much the same chip for the steam deck desktop unit

Question/Riddle for all y'all:
Which filesystem should I use for external SSD, given I want to hold potentially sensitive data for a few days, and to be able to connect it to PC and Android phone?
I do have a backup, but I'm going back home for a few days, and it's family stuff, photos, that kinda files, I want to copy to my parents
ext4 is out, because Android says it doesn't support it on external drives
exFAT also out, because some files were corrupted last time I wanted to copy them (disk is fine tho, works with no issues with ext4), fine for smaller USB sticks, for 1TB disk not so much

cursive summit
#

Why not just FAT with one of those Samsung T8s or whatever they are

#

They just released new ones

rough osprey
#

fat32?

cursive summit
#

For.. data security I guess?

rough osprey
#

i mean what other options do you have lol

i think android doesn't like ntfs

#

This thing came out recently

#

umbral heron
#

And there's a lot of videos there
It wouldn't be an issue overall
But mom wants to have some photos on her tablet

halcyon moss
#

Exfat then?

umbral heron
#

Thing is exFAT gives up after 100GB copied or so with my disk
There's no issue when formatted to ext4 though

cursive summit
#

Just Raid0

halcyon moss
#

Btrfs?

#

Xfs?

#

Or.. Reiserfs?

#

I assume by pc you mean windows. And that really limits your options

umbral heron

halcyon moss
#

Ah! Hm

umbral heron
#

Maybe f2fs? Seems like Android likes it

cursive summit
#

Quick google says EXT

#

Whatever that is

halcyon moss
#

What's erofs

umbral heron
#

ext2/3/4, filesystem Linux uses
And Android is a-ok with it on internal partitions, but it doesn't accept it as an external drive

cursive summit
#

I don't see why NTFS or exFAT are a bad choice

#

For data security you can just encrypt, obviously

umbral heron
halcyon moss
#

Some sources do say ntfs is supported

cursive summit
#

I saw that, and I'm unsure if your disk is just faulty or you didn't try enough

halcyon moss
#

But yeah.. Exfat is the only sure option.

umbral heron
#

I've used it today with exfat partition on it, nearly full to a brim, worked flawlessly

If so, Imma just go with ext4 and copy files in portions with some exfat USB stick uwu_cry

halcyon moss

Can you use 2 partitions

so its more like 70€ for me

ashen spindle
#

it will be better for longer bc it has more vram so if you want new titles that will make it a better option

cursive summit
#

Just get the 7800XT

ashen spindle
#

that just doesnt make sense if you look at the prices

potent arch
#

yea i think imma buy the 6800

#

it would barely fit my budget of 1000€ so thats nice

#

imma wait for black friday tho incase any better deals pop up

cursive summit
#

Well 6000 series gets AMFM but not hypr-rx

#

Kinda missing out on features in exchange for value

ashen spindle
#

paying 100$ more for the option to have one tick isntead of multiple settings is not a good value lol

cursive summit
#

Not what I said

vagrant pagoda
#

Now that's a toaster

cursive summit
#

You lose the tick for value

#

Hypr-rx is cool but idk if it means enough for a budget shopper

ashen spindle
#

hypr rx is basically just a combination of existing things you can already use, you dont really lose out on something

cursive summit
#

You do

#

You cant run any of the hypr rx features together manually

#

Pick one, not all of them

#

Oh and also, anti-lag+

#

Big feature on Radeon 7000 series

hey guys i'm new here and i have a quick question about keybinding, can I in any way change the key bindings of the shift key? ex. if i press shift and 1 i get !, can i change it to get a different special character? Thanks πŸ™‚

ashen spindle
#

the OS handles that so you'd need to change how the OS interprets a key or use a macro for that

trim ember
#

I'll look in to it, thank you πŸ™‚

shadow minnow
#

That’s not the same thing I am pretty sure

#

Cache is a separate thing

cursive summit
#

Sounds the same

shadow minnow
#

Far from

#

Rebar is just sell ssd to GPU direct interfacing, this is different, this is about programs allocating GPU cache

ashen spindle
#

no encode just a decoder?

cursive summit
#

Lol those comparisons vs M2

#

Not big, as expected

wheat plume
