warm night
#

im not good at wording things am i

#

because that is definitely right

smoky frigate
#

who need grammer anyway

warm night
#

if they dont screw it up then its fine

#

👍

cursive summit
#

They managed to compose neurons into code?

#

Oh apparently I misinterpreted it, this is somewhat even bigger

#

This would essentially give us some ideas how to implement ways to figure out how an AI model works, how it came to conclusions and how can we manipulate the interim decision making to improve the models

#

Since for whatever reason, we don't know how they really work

old briar
#

I heard that there's software out there that's going to emulate a pianokey press on the wooting?

#

going to make a virtual accelerometer for each key press to determine how loud a piano sound is?

astral haven
wheat plume
#

Sad...only AAC

smoky frigate
#

AAC isn't bad at all, I dunno about android's implementation tho

astral haven
#

its not great compared to any of the other options tho

#

even base aptx is better

#

hd, ll, and adaptive as well as ofc ldac and ldhc all are better

old briar
astral haven
#

👍 yea its prolly got alot of info to look at even if you dont have feedback to give right now

old briar
#

now I'm wondering if wooting's gonna make a mouse to pair with their bleeding-edge keyboard
one of the things I really enjoyed about Razer is the Hypershift integration (I can press Fn on the keyboard and the mouse goes into the alternate profile)

ashen spindle
#

probably not

cursive summit
#

Speaking of

smoky frigate
astral haven
#

virtually

#

switch back and forth and the difference is obvious

smoky frigate
#

not really

astral haven
#

lucky you

#

for many of us it is

#

i will say it matters less the worse the device is

#

for the high end tho like n300 and the headphones, its kinda important

smoky frigate
#

I'll take your word for it

astral haven
#

if you cant hear it, you dont need to worry about it

#

and for stuff like youtube its solid

smoky frigate
#

people can't often tell in ABX tests either

#

for reference

astral haven
#

yea the codec is better than lower bitrate stuff

#

now compare it to aptx adaptive or ldac

#

even ldac 330

#

(where ldac goes up to 990)

#

like sure if apple was stuffing aac320 over bluetooth that would probably be fine

smoky frigate
#

why even use lossy compression if you're gonna use bitrates that high

astral haven
#

because you need error correction for wireless

#

and its still significantly lower than raw

#

yea well opus in bluetooth when?

smoky frigate
#

open standards in hardware design? lol never

astral haven
#

youd be surprised it can happen

#

sbc is at least an open standard

smoky frigate
#

about listening tests: forgive me for being very skeptical of claims when every ABX test I find gives satisfactory results for AAC at a certain bitrate

astral haven
#

oh its satisfactory definetly

#

and its far better than sbc

smoky frigate
#

aka close to imperceptible

astral haven
#

but compare when its in bluetooth

#

it would be if it were running at 320

#

but its not

#

also keep in mind offline conversion vs realtime conversion is a very very different quality level

smoky frigate
#

okay, I can accept that

tender totem
astral haven
#

its just like sbc too

#

sbc in theory is fantastic

#

incredible bitrate

#

96k

#

16 bit

#

but thats not how its implemented

#

its always 441 variable bit depth and under 100k

smoky frigate
#

afaik it depends on a lot of factors. if you throw enough bits at it, it should be transparent

astral haven
#

sure

#

but bluetooth doesnt allow that

cursive summit
cursive summit
#

I have heard of Fidelios and that they are alright

#

But pretty sure that there are far better headphones at that price

smoky frigate
#

I'm hearing good things about philips at that price point, but it's been a couple years since they released

smoky frigate
astral haven
#

KLEER
thats the name of the tech i wish would come back

#

kleer was fkn goated

#

literally just raw audio data with minor protocol overhead
could pair multiple headphones to the same transmitter

#

no compression, incredibly low latency thanks to skipping compression

#

all around awesome

smoky frigate
#

sadly, the best technology is often not the ubiquitous one

astral haven
#

only problem is it cant be integrated into bluetooth

#

and bluetooth has so many options

cursive summit
smoky frigate
#

I have no idea what you mean with that non-sequitur lol

cursive summit
#

Nice term that doesn't make any sense

#

You did know that audio products can use the 2.4GHz band for wireless connectivity, have been using it and are very good at it?

smoky frigate
#

I have not been bitching about the frequency band, nothing wrong with it

cursive summit
#

Well you hate bluetooth, move to 2.4GHz

#

If you find the 3 odd products that actually use the band for wireless

smoky frigate
#

??? whatever you say boss

astral haven
#

bluetooth ofc is 2.4

#

as is kleer

#

the frequency is meaningless

cursive summit
old marlin
astral haven
#

and ofc vex links sennheisers absolute worst option in the category

cursive summit
old marlin
#

yea

#

"2.4ghz" usually just means prorietary protocols

cursive summit
#

Could have sworn it was some sub-band judging with how shite the technology is

astral haven
smoky frigate
#

see, I used the term non-sequitur because what you said made no sense in the context you replied to

cursive summit
#

Well it's an "efficient" protocol so.. eh, it does its job

smoky frigate
#

to you maybe

cursive summit
#

Don't like bluetooth, get sennheiser's wireless

old marlin
cursive summit
#

Pretty sure sennheiser's wireless is lossless or someshit like that, long range and else that bluetooth isn't

old marlin
#

sennheisers is an analog signal

astral haven
#

oh sure its about the product features, its been wiped from the internet for the most part

astral haven
old marlin
astral haven
#

the rs220 are kleer based with dsss on top to make them more resilient

old marlin
smoky frigate
#

what the hell lol

astral haven
#

the rs180 and rs220 are digital

young pecan
smoky frigate
#

that ought to be a disaster for people with identical pairs next to you

astral haven
#

as is the rs160?

cursive summit
young pecan
#

From when?

cursive summit
#

Idk, 2010s?

#

Pretty old

#

Discontinued afaik

young pecan
#

For audio stuff? Lmao no.
Audio moves so slowly.

old marlin
#

high end low latency headphones are still a shitfest

astral haven
#

they have become a shitfest

#

they didnt used to be

cursive summit
#

Pretty sad that something as good as a Bathys only uses bluetooth

old marlin
#

Bathys?

young pecan
#

Can't get why you'd do wireless, tbh. I had decent wireless back in the day and they sounded like complete crap.

astral haven
young pecan
#

Didn't know it at the time but these days? Yike.

old marlin
cursive summit
#

To some the best

astral haven
cursive summit
#

And still bluetooth only wireless

young pecan
old marlin
#

bluetooth can be good nowadays

cursive summit
#

Has anyone made some pluggable-in adaptors for some lossless 2.4GHz connection to appliances like PCs or phones?

astral haven
#

aptx adaptive is incredibly good

cursive summit
#

Afaik DACs are still relying on bluetooth

astral haven
#

ldac 990 is also pretty solid

young pecan
#

You literally can't do lossless wireless streaming.

astral haven
smoky frigate
ashen spindle
young pecan
#

The only actual lossless data you'll get is TCP and then you stream that over resistant backend.

astral haven
#

did aeon also mute me?

#

would make sense considering neither him nor vex want to be right

young pecan
#

Just put the fucking mic down when you go take a shit.

ashen spindle
#

who says anything about discord

#

and my mic is a deskmic

smoky frigate
young pecan
#

See now that belongs in r/cursedcomments just like you.

old marlin
old marlin
#

even lossless formats are only an approximations

smoky frigate
#

seems weird when 1X CD speeds are enough for lossless audio 😛

astral haven

different definitions of lossless

lofty pivot
#

the better bluetooth connections are honestly pretty decent these days. It’s not wired but it’s solid

young pecan
#

Technically doable.

#

Nobody want a 4 minute song being 800MB.

old marlin
#

even then

#

an approximation

ashen spindle
old marlin

you can store a single second analog recording to infinite fidelity

to infinte storage space

coarse oxide
#

Anyone have any advice? Nothing I do lets me reset my pc, keeps giving me the cannot reset error

smoky frigate
#

well but then analog is not lossless

lofty pivot
#

Been using a bluetooth dac/amp for iems when I’m moving about the house and it’s been quite a nice experience

astral haven
old marlin
#

no reason you couldn't

astral haven
#

yep

#

kleer is digitally lossless for example

#

its a shame it was proprietary

ashen spindle
smoky frigate
astral haven
smoky frigate

well but that's beside the point

astral haven

yep

lofty pivot
ashen spindle

I'm still fearing the day mine break and I dont know what to get now lmfao

astral haven
#

i bought an extra 2 rs220 for when mine die

ashen spindle
#

I'm just hoping whenever they die we have something thats at least as good, I have just about that much faith that a decade later new stuff is equal xD

astral haven
#

i have no hope now considering its over 10 years now

old marlin
lofty pivot
#

I went full IEMs these days just because I found headphone hair annoying and I got tired of cleaning headphone pads constantly

young pecan
#

Bruh it's digital sound, if it's not absolutely fucked it's the same.

#

You find some fantastic idiots.

smoky frigate
#

Some casuals will claim this is voodoo, but I promise you it's not. If you have a combination modem and wifi router, all those billion settings on the router actually affect your mouse movement. Things like "readyshare" for media sharing and all the others. If you just want a single setting to test this theory, one of the more egregious ones is "Airtime Fairness." Toggle that on and off and you'll notice an immediate effect where having it on the cursor is slower. biggest brained post I have seen this year

young pecan
#

Nah that's not brain dead. It implies there was a brain there in the first place.

smoky frigate
young pecan
#

Has this energy. It never developed in the first place.

young pecan
#

No you don't, stfu.

astral haven
young pecan
#

I'll allow it for analogue valve amps since those do change the sound, but you aren't hearing a difference in cable. That's mental damage.

lofty pivot
#

Audiophiles have the oddest people in their communities sometimes. They’ll just recommend products to each other that neither person has tried half the time

astral haven
smoky frigate
young pecan
#

Siemens E88CC gray NOS ‘65 for me. I love that thing.

smoky frigate
young pecan
#

I wanted a ‘63 but I wasn’t about to double my price for it.

smoky frigate
#

what's cool about audio in linux is that the driver can expose some settings in the chip that you don't get on windows drivers, but that's kinda it

young pecan
#

More of a development and/or gimmick thing though.

#

Fun to watch.

smoky frigate
#

maybe. de-emphasis is a kooky feature to have, dunno what DAC filter does but I would guess it's the low-pass filter. I've never seen that able to be customized!

#

for somebody, somewhere, this has to be useful

astral haven
#

does the emphasis actually do anything?

smoky frigate
#

lemme see

astral haven
#

in spdif, emphasis is 3 bits of data that mostly just get ignored

#

oh no there are 3 data bits for different things, 1 of them is emphasis

smoky frigate
#

yeah, it does something. it's a holdover from 80s noise cancellation tech. it used to be called Dolby on tapes.

astral haven
#

it used to do something
do modern dacs still respect it?

#

mine doesnt at least

smoky frigate
#

if I enable de-emphasis on this chip, it reduces high frequencies, aka it's good if I'm listening to the Quake 1 CD music lol (that one has pre-emphasis)

astral haven
#

hunh

smoky frigate
#

I'm not aware of any other CDs that use it, for some reason Quake 1 had it

astral haven
#

yea when i feed my dac the emphasis bit from my src2496 it does nothing

devout raptor
#

what should I do with the dlss sharpening slider?

#

will maxing it just ruin how the game looks

astral haven
smoky frigate
astral haven
smoky frigate
#

(at least it simulates it)

astral haven
#

interesting

#

well my dac ignores it

#

might be implemented internally, but if i feed it the bit it doesnt do anything

my favorite was a guy who swore he could tell CD rips apart based on the CD drive they were ripped with

astral haven
#

that may have once been true

#

different drives had different quality of error correction, throw a scratched disk in there and one may have issues where another is fine

#

especially with like the 50x readers or whatever

smoky frigate
#

mid-2000s were a dark time for CDs, I hated these overly fast drives

I had a CD crack in a 52x drive once

fickle ore
#

Hm I wonder if anyone can help me. What's the correct device if I need my active speakers and headphones connected to my PC, liek something in between so that I dont need to always unplug/plug

#

Something with passthrough for the active speakers?

#

yeah sure, but I dont have the physical slots on my pc to connect both speakers and headphones

#

yeah im asking what kind of device is good for in-between

#

or an amp that has passthrough for active speakers

#

idk if it exists 😄

fickle ore
#

haha just looking for the cheapest possible solution

digital cliff
#

lots of headphone amps also have RCA out but I don't think they discriminate between the output

#

i.e. they'll send to the headphones as well as to the RCA

#

think something in the <100€ category will do

#

I almost got the behringer 302/502/802 at some point, think those are a solid pick depending on how many channels you need

#

they are very functional, not very pretty on your desk though

fickle ore
#

My issue with my headphone amp before was that it was amping the active speakers so basically double amped and the hiss from speakers was soo loud

#

some kind of ground loop maybe

#

Im not sure if such a device exist that has RCA passthrough

#

Maybe the mixers do?

digital cliff
#

yeah headphone amps normally act as pre-amps for speakers if you wanna use em that way but a good one should not give a noticeable hiss

#

mixers basically just take inputs and send em to the output and you can control each input's volume in the mix from 0-100

#

sometimes they have more outputs as well

#

just gotta find a product that does the thing you want

fickle ore
digital cliff
#

what's your setup looking like now anyway?

fickle ore

PC 3.5 mm in splitter to 2 rca (speakers) and then I plug it off and switch 3.5 mm headphones when needed

and its too much hassle and im lazy

#

behind the pc, mobo slot 3.5 mm

digital cliff
#

in that case with no external dacs or amps in the chain, you could just get some cheap splitter that has a toggle I think

got a link? 🙂

I have Steam Deck, and my desktop also had Linux and Windows on it, dual booting from 2 SSDs

I also got emulation stuff installed on my SD card, so I can pop that in and play retro games

vernal bridge

i see, ive wanted to try going full only linux and virtualize win to play games but

#

i dont think i'll manage lmao

wheat plume

Careful, if you use a VM to play online multiplayer games like COD, BF and Fortnite etc etc, they may ban you for using a VM

vernal bridge

wheat plume

Yeah, just use X11 and you will be fine

warm night

but its not like your computer is unusable and its completely garbage

smoky frigate
warm night
#

youd rather use AMD, yeah, but nvidia is alright

#

in games you wont even know

wheat plume
warm night
#

on the desktop AMD really does do better though

wheat plume
#

^

#

ye

#

AMD is better for Linux overall, even the drivers are baked into the kernel so no manual installation needed

#

On Nvidia, you need to install the drivers yourself

#

unless the distro gives you that option during OS install

smoky frigate
#

I need to digress there, AMD was always more of a mess on linux than it ought to be for me

warm night
#

hm?

#

interesting

wheat plume
#

odd

warm night
#

my laptop is AMD, though I've never gamed on it desktop use was perfect

wheat plume
#

I know Minecraft will run better on AMD than NVidia due to the Mesa drivers

smoky frigate
#

it would not support 360hz on linux, games tended to be glitchy

warm night
#

interesting

#

didnt know about that

ashen spindle
warm night
#

well i mean everything on the desktop is still gpu accelerated

#

its not like the desktop environment is software rendered is it

#

on nvidia I'd get random bugs that just arent present using an amd gpu

ashen spindle
#

unless you do something weird it's not using the 3d render pipeline

smoky frigate
#

desktop environment is gpu accelerated (at least on gnome)

warm night

yup using gnome on the laptop

wheat plume

ashen spindle

you're not telling me notepads are rendering while using a depth buffer for shadows xD

crimson wigeon

Oh yeah probably most fancy crap is disabled becuse it's not needed

wheat plume
vernal bridge
smoky frigate
ashen spindle
#

will depend on what you use, multimonitor seems also still be an issue with high refresh rate

#

and amd works fine for a friend on linux where high fps isnt glitchy

#

so still not a one shoe fits all

smoky frigate
#

yeah I only use a single monitor. X11 is better for gaming, but it does only draw a single screen on multiple monitors, so there are issues associated with that

wheat plume
#

ooo tiny !!!

ashen spindle
#

god I hate descriptions like that

warm night
pale sigil
#

So fucking expensive

warm night

yea i set some

so i have them stored in multiple different places

so i dont ever lose it

because i cant deal with the compositor at 60hz for some reason

smoky frigate
#

understandable, since I have a 360hz screen, 60 looks like liquid shit to me

warm night
#

same but on 144

#

though im thinking of sidegrading to a 120hz or something 1440p panel

#

well ig upgrade

ashen spindle

just upgrade the second screens to match hz ez

smoky frigate
warm night

hm

#

might try

wheat plume
#

Why do all the Tuxedo portable laptops have Intel CPUs? ;-; only their gaming ones have options for AMD

thick elk
#

Just lowered my idle power consumption by roughly 20w Before I had issues with it on plasma but now it works fine after forcing a software cursor.
Plugging in 2 of my monitors on my igp.
Decreased the idle power by 40w or so on the gpu at the cost of 20w of power consumed by the igp.

#

Let's see if there are more issues, but so far seems to work fine.

ashen spindle
wheat plume

smoky frigate

File: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf

   Identifier "AMD Graphics"
   Driver "amdgpu"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection``` this is likely to fix all your outstanding tearing issues, awesome setting
warm night
#

amd

#

would be great if i had amd on my desktop xd

smoky frigate
#

oh woops! then you are FUCKED

warm night
#

gonna upgrade to amd eventually so ill try remember xd

thick elk
#

There are older types of usb to hdmi dapters that actually run over usb those may work but most usb-c display adapters work the same and if the decks' dock does not work, neither would any other one.

smoky frigate
#

(I don't actually know, I just haven't tackled multi-monitor on nvidia yet)

warm night
#

having mild tearing on the secondary monitors isnt really a problem for me

wheat plume
#

you check both boxes

#

and reboot

warm night
#

or i can go down 14hz and just get 120hz on the main

#

24 even i can do math

#

probably wont even tell a difference

thick elk
#

I used multi monitor just fine on Nvidia, tearing can also be fixed on xorg, the only thing that does not work is adaptive sync on multiple monitors under xorg or actually having a usable system using kde plasma under wayland.

wheat plume

oh, if I use it for Display Out, I wont be able to charge it at the same time

I'd rather be on xorg at tbh

smoky frigate
# warm night having mild tearing on the secondary monitors isnt really a problem for me

1. In NVIDIA XServer Settings, disable OpenGL flipping, then set ForceCompositionPipeline=On for both displays (Display Configuration -> Advanced... will need to save to X.org configuration file).
2. Put the following in /etc/environment (144000 = 144 Hz, adjust accordingly to the highest refresh rate between your monitors):

KWIN_X11_REFRESH_RATE=144000
KWIN_X11_NO_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=1

This results in perfectly smooth, tear-free animation on the high refresh rate display, and lower framerate, still tear-free animation on the other display. Note that I am leaving out the "KWIN_X11_FORCE_SOFTWARE_VSYNC=1" setting, as adding it results in dropped frames.

Thanks to the kwin developers for making these options available!``` I remembered this post on the KDE bug report page, try this

smoky frigate

I don't use adaptive sync or HDR

still strange that Valve choose to use X11 for Desktop Mode, despite game mode being Wayland

warm night

hm interesting

i think with plasma 6 theyre putting a lot into Wayland

wheat plume
#

They have support within GameScope compositor for HDR

thick elk
#

I mean Wayland is simply the way to go, yes it takes a damn long time to be there for every usecase. But Xorg just lays to rot right now.

warm night

xorg is gonna be very much still used until nvidia gets their shit in order with Wayland

wheat plume

^

warm night

but we should really be pushing Wayland as much as reasonably possible, best way its gonna improve is to make xorg no longer an option

I think fedora are thinking about dropping x11?

smoky frigate

warm night
#

yeah that's fair

thick elk
#

From what I heard it works fine in Hyprland according to my brother.
Of course you will not have overclocking or certain config options.

#

I personally don't mind the current situation, for desktop use vsync is not bad to have and adaptive sync is a thing.

Not saying everyone should switch right now but the time will come.

Wayland vsync off has been a thing I've had for years since it was a hard requirement for me

Also something that is possible under wayland or will be soon for everyone that does not use Gnome.

I heard KDE can disable it, but not gnome

well the issue i have is that linux as its base is a nice idea like most unix style OSs but they splintered ecosystem AND that a lot of users are quite elitist is just annoying

umbral heron

Oh yeah
Ask someone about a weird issue and most of the time you'll get "figure it out by yourself" as an answer
But try to explain someone some Linux stuff in light and not-very-complicated-way they'll flock like seagulls, that's wrong, thata wrong, imagining convoluted situation they've only encountered

fair gull
#

like id switch to linux if googling for issues would be easier, the OOBE would be better and the general ecosystem would be made for general users and not people who want to constantly tinker with their OS so it keeps working as it should

#

theres still a good chunk of audio and video issues on linux

umbral heron
#

For audio issues I have solution that hasn't failed not once for 2 years I'm on linux - install pipewire, if it's not working switch to pulseaudio
And for video mpv does everything
I do constantly tinker with my installations, but it's mostly to figure out easier solutions than there are available on Internet

fair gull

more in the editing sense i mean

like mixing audio, video streaming and muxing

umbral heron

umbral heron
#

One thing that became more standardized, systemd, has split community most probably the most
For one I'd actually be happy for single linux specification

digital cliff

nah it's just normal people and then the systemd-hater contrarians

i.e. vocal minority hating on it

umbral heron
