It sends the movement data at a constant rate

gusty kiln
#

It's not razer but pixart

wheat plume
#

True

gusty kiln
#

All 3395 sensors have that feature

wheat plume
#

Even from other brands?

gusty kiln
#

Yeah

wheat plume
#

But do they use it?

gusty kiln
#

Most do

#

It's yet another marketing feature that has to be checked off nowadays

wheat plume
#

Aha

old marlin
#

motion sync kinda sucks tbh

#

usually it just ends up meaning that sensor data is delayed one poll

astral haven
#

🤷 always a tradeoff between accuracy and smoothness
especially when converting refresh rates

#

Raw sensor mice when lel

#

usb has plenty of bandwidth for sending the raw image data these days

wheat plume
#

Ooo Kde Connect can show the thumbnail image now!

cedar vine
#

does anyone here know if you can use any cable with the logitech dongles or does it have to be the one from the box?

astral haven
#

any usb extension cable will work

#

as long as the extension actually works ofc

wheat plume
#

It's nice they give you one though
If your computer is really far from your desk

astral haven
#

its extremely rare that it is needed

gusty kiln
#

I actually use mine for my monitor kvm

#

So i can swap out keyboard and mice easily

astral haven
#

for a wireless dongle?

gusty kiln
#

Yeah sometime I take my wireless mouse with me with my laptop

astral haven
#

ah fair enough

#

i just have a mouse collecting problem so i have enough mice for each device

Too bad I don't drink coffee

If I did, I'd compare Jacksepticeye coffee with his and see what I like better

#

I need a Pi 5

astral haven
#

no you dont

wheat plume
#

I want a Pi 5

astral haven

😁

wheat plume
#

Make it into a server

#

But I'd have to leave it at my aunt's house to use her router and then somehow connect to it from home

cloudflare is free, my sites are hosted on google, and although I do pay for google, I dont have to for this

wheat plume
#

The day I get a WiFi router will be glorious

#

We got up to all sorts of shit in the house we rented for college on the router there :')

#

We had 2 Pis
We had my old desktop acting as 2 Minecraft servers AND a Linux dev environment all on one machine

#

It was great

astral haven
#

cloudflared will pass through firewalls by directly connecting to cloudflare

wheat plume
#

Makes Sense

astral haven
#

yup
most online instructions will include that by default

wheat plume
#

The power button on the Pi 5 works like a laptop power button...good

It pops up logout options on the desktop when you press it while the system is on

#

Idk why I thought it would just immediately shut down

#

Wanna see what other OS options the Pi has

#

PiNAS is a funny word

astral haven
#

keep in mind alot of stuff assumes rasbian

wheat plume
#

Yep...

#

He no like the Pi keyboard

I assume it's the same keyboard the 400 is built inside of?

astral haven
#

🤷
also wtf apple
the reduce motion option doesnt make navigating faster
but when theres no animation of the same length as the original it just pauses for a quarter second before playing a quick fade animation

wheat plume
#

Oh....there is A, B and C models of the Pi 5??
And do each of those have the 4 and 8 GB ram options too???

#

That's 6 configurations
Don't seem right?

astral haven
#

i havent seen A and C pi5s?

wheat plume
#

This says model b and idk why

astral haven
#

B is like "itx" or "atx"

#

its a board shape

cursive summit
#

Oh shit how did I miss this

#

From the first look it seems like a very similar approach to what was it, autoGPT?

#

Just self-iteration

#

But seems quite a bit more complex than that

#

Really good stuff

#

Self-iteration gives better results

astral haven
#

ai safety experts

"LLMS are safe because they arent agentic"
Microsoft and literally every other ai project
turns them into agentic systems

wheat plume
#

In theory you can have 4 displays on the Pi 5

#

The two hdmi ports and the two cam/disp connectors

astral haven
#

that does depend on the internals, its possible the hdmis are sharing resources

cursive summit
#

cam/disp?

wheat plume
cursive summit
#

What on earth it that

wheat plume
#

Idk xd

cursive summit
#

Yeah idk either

astral haven
#

board to board (flex) connectors

cursive summit
#

Looks like some bootleg vga shit

astral haven
#

very normal for internal video signals

wheat plume
#

They are for cameras and things

cursive summit
#

How do you even connect a camera to that

#

And wtf does disp stand for? Display?

#

So camera to display?

astral haven
#

with a flexible cable

#

its camera or display

#

switchable

cursive summit
wheat plume
#

Idk how to use them either XD

wheat plume
#

But the new official pi camera can connect to them

astral haven
#

you buy the device and it plugs into the port

thick elk
#

Having two camera ports allows for some easier stereoscopic setups

cursive summit
#

Pi 5 is still using some Cortex-A76 or something

thick elk
#

or if you want something with two displays connected to emulate a nintendo ds.

#

of course you could also go the hdmi route

astral haven
#

yep but hdmi connectors are lorge, these flex connectors can fit within the height of a tiny case

cursive summit
#

Huh, they are designing their own I/O controllers

#

Wooting might want to hit Raspberry up for a partnership at some point mm

thick elk
#

Still the primary reason from what I heard was people wanting to run a stereoscopic camera setup.

astral haven
#

yep, and now you can do a stereoscopic camera and display setup!

#

pi vr headset when lel

thick elk
#

I have to puke thinking about that one.

astral haven
#

using the facebook tech it could actually be awesome

#

problem is the sensors facebook uses for optical perspective correction are an absolutely horrific amount of money lel

#

but they require practically zero processing power since the perspective correction is optical

#

at least relative to the amount of power needed for the q2 or vision pro

halcyon moss

Heatsink is fine for most applications it sounds like

pale sigil
halcyon moss
#

You generally don't run these at full tilt

halcyon moss
astral haven
#

starts at 4gb

#

pi4 had less ram (optionally)

wheat plume
#

Watching a 4k video puts it into full tilt already

gusty kiln
astral haven
#

also that but even msrp

halcyon moss
#

Oh, you want it as a media center kinda thing

astral haven
#

yea thats just the wrong device for that

#

grab one of the intel n100 boards

gusty kiln
#

Any cheap nas with an Intel cpu will do as well

wheat plume
#

Specifically Intel?

halcyon moss
#

Pi for me is homeserver territory.

astral haven
halcyon moss
wheat plume
#

Oh

gusty kiln
#

Synology started using amd, but without the igpu

astral haven
#

the n100 is intels newest generation, and its incredibly cheap and super efficient

halcyon moss
gusty kiln
#

Yeah

gusty kiln
astral haven
#

the n300 is 8 cores but doesnt really fit on a pi sized sbc because of how much more power it can consume

pale sigil
#

My nas is 512mb ram xd

astral haven
#

In this video we take a look at the upcoming N100 Edge SBC, Powered by a 3.4Ghz CPU and backed by up to 16Gb Of DDr5 this could turn out to be an awesome option for Emulation like PS2, Gamecube, PSP and even WiiU! A small Company known as CompuBench sent over one of the first prototypes for testing and so far it actually a very good single boar...

▶ Play video
#

dunno if its truly released yet

gusty kiln

Yeah

#

I see some embedded ones on asrock website

#

Would be best for diy nas

#

Just need a m.2 sata daughter board

pale sigil
#

Is that casually playing Skyrim

astral haven
#

There are a few minipcs online if you just want a media center

#

Yep

pale sigil
#

Wouldn't say cheap

#

But I also can't find it

#

In the UK

#

Or is it even out

astral haven
#

Dunno

#

But brand new complete systems are under 200

pale sigil
#

Oh

#

This isn't an Intel sold machine

#

Just Intel CPU

astral haven
pale sigil
#

Hmm

#

Might actually be a decent option for me tbh

#

I want to move away from using my desktop outside of gaming

halcyon moss
#

Why

astral haven
#

Uh no, this is nooooot for gaming

#

Oh I misread nvm

gusty kiln
#

Better to get the 7840u mini pc for gaming

pale sigil
#

Not for gaming

gusty kiln
#

But that's much more expensive

pale sigil
#

Me wants to stop using my desktop

halcyon moss
pale sigil
#

Hmm?

gusty kiln
halcyon moss
#

Kek

pale sigil
#

Don't have Samsung kek

halcyon moss
#

But why use a small desktop pc instead of your desktop pc

astral haven
halcyon moss
astral haven
#

Tbh it makes sense if you have a phone without video out

#

Gaming pcs use a ton of power and make alot of room heat to just watch YouTube videos

halcyon moss
astral haven
#

My s21u can do 4k60 lel

#

Get a better dock

halcyon moss
#

Huh, maybe just not 1440p then?

astral haven
#

It does 1440p as well

halcyon moss
#

It's the one in the screen it self

astral haven
#

That is strange

#

The s21u only supports dp1.2

halcyon moss
#

And I use it daily with my laptop and even displayport daisy chained

astral haven
#

Yea it's probably your monitor only supporting 2 lanes for video

#

Or you haven't turned on the high res option

#

Gives you a warning about overheating

halcyon moss
#

Never seen that option

pale sigil
#

And fuck Nvidia

#

Because I can't even run Linux without hassle pepecry

astral haven
gusty kiln
#

Kinda crazy that Google haven't introduced a desktop mode yet

astral haven
#

They have it it's just broken

gusty kiln
#

Oh rip

astral haven
#

But their phones don't have video on the port so you can't use it with their devices

gusty kiln
#

Oof

#

A desktop mode is now a requirement for me in a phone

#

And very few companies have it

pale sigil
#

I considered my steam deck

#

But it's been a shit experience

astral haven

At least by user count

astral haven
gusty kiln
halcyon moss
gusty kiln
#

Maybe more Chinese companies now

astral haven

Unless you want battery life aaand performance

gusty kiln
astral haven

Im hoping I can go sony

gusty kiln
#

Importing?

astral haven
#

What?

terse thorn
#

is using a usb-c to usb-c faster than the cord in the box?

gusty kiln
#

I think I saw somewhere that the Sony phone isn't coming to the us

astral haven
#

No I'm hoping Sony puts a large enough sensor on their next cam to outperform my current phone

gusty kiln
#

Might have read it wrong

gusty kiln
#

Oh

astral haven
#

5 v I think isnt

gusty kiln
#

Yeah 5v

astral haven
#

I want the 1 vi

gusty kiln
terse thorn
#

response time

gusty kiln
#

Nah

terse thorn
#

the cord in the box is faster, or they the same?

astral haven
#

All the same

gusty kiln
#

The only time the cable matter is for tacyon mode and the rgb

terse thorn
#

so if it is on?

#

tacyon mode

gusty kiln
#

Ideally the box cable, but any should work as long as it is not too long and a good quality cable

terse thorn
#

ok

astral haven
#

And it's not really about latency, a bad cable will glitch the lights or miss keystrokes

#

Or disconnect

terse thorn
#

alright, thanks

astral haven
gusty kiln
#

What's the rumor msrp?

#

Looking mighty expensive

astral haven
#

1300 to 1600 probs

gusty kiln
#

Lol "sustainable packaging"

#

Aka no assessories

astral haven
#

sure but also zero plastic unlike apple

gusty kiln
#

Yeah

#

They still like their clean plastic wrap around the box

#

Unless they stopped that by now

astral haven
#

they dont have it on the iphone now at least

#

bigger thing is more the plastic coated stuffs
its recyclable unlike the plastic films they used to use, but it does use fossil fuels

steep creek
#

Will be cool to see this when it arrives

astral haven
#

now that i have given up on deckard copium, its now xperia copium lel

#

sony is not known for going hard on sensor size

#

their phones are incredibly fast video shooters
4k120hz on all 3 lenses
milc level tracking "AI" autofocus even in video

#

they also support relatively high speed photo burst

#

yea full sensor 30fps burst

steep creek
#

I know they make solid cameras and tvs, phones honestly I haven’t kept up

#

But they feel very well built, and snappy

astral haven
#

except for pro video or as a viewfinder for a camera

steep creek
#

Yep

astral haven
#

and for getting pictures that look natural while still being in focus

steep creek
#

Maybe they need to work a bit on image processing as well, I get it’s aimed towards the enthusiast side but

#

To appeal to people who might not be that into photography, it would be nice

astral haven
#

yea they really need to just default to vivid

#

and pare it down to 2 camera apps at most

steep creek
#

Yeap bright popping colors attract a lot of people , lol

astral haven
#

and sony vivid isnt even that crazy popping

#

i personally really love cinetone, but it doesnt bring the most out of a tiny phone cam

#

in fact you really need excess DR to make cinetone look good

steep creek
#

Yeah I think Samsung is regarded as the go to for vivid screens and photos. Apple also added photographic styles to iPhone not too long ago, but imo it’s not a night and day difference between the modes

astral haven
#

its pretty substantial, but it crushes detail

steep creek
#

I’ve left it in standard all this time hah, I thought it was in vibrant

#

But yeah I see now it’s different

astral haven
#

yea when I got my new phone i took a few test shots and zoomed into shadows and everything besides standard gets rid of detail 😦

#

(work phone)

steep creek
#

Hm I’ll try that when it’s sunny

#

By the way did the phone work well with your monitor

astral haven
#

yep no problemo

#

except for basically none of the input devices working

#

no mouse

#

no trackpad

steep creek
#

Lol it is Apple after all

astral haven
#

keyboard was jank

#

worked well enough tho

#

but no pointing is just unuseable

steep creek
#

Maybe if you have one of those usb c hubs, to connect everything into it

#

But I’m just guessing

astral haven
#

thats what i did

steep creek
#

Ah hm

astral haven
#

apple only supports pointing devices via bluetooth

#

and only if you go into accessibility settings and that bs

steep creek
#

Oh yeah that thing, they handle it that way with the iPad and the floating keyboard, it’s quite strange

astral haven
#

floating keyboard is normal

#

even floating suggestions

#

that happens on my android and is an option on windows

#

but just refusing to use standard usb mice???

steep creek
#

Lol it would make all my mice useless if I were to connect the phone to a monitor

#

I’m surprised you said the keyboard worked, even though it was janky

astral haven
#

keyboards have worked for a while afaik

#

using the lightning to usb adapter for example

#

its really bad to not have keyboard support for accessibility

#

and apple has supported the magic keyboard since release afaik

#

im also getting rather annoyed as to how precise the wireless charging needs to be on this non magsafe case

steep creek
#

I see that’s not too good

#

By the way with MagSafe charging , I’m unsure if this is an isolated case or not, but it did leave a permanent mark on my case

astral haven
#

yea but i dont have magsafe

#

so i cant properly line up the charger

steep creek
#

Yea tried that a couple times, I’ll just stick to wired lol

astral haven
#

yea i love my magnetic usb c connectors

empty wren
#

They have not had the plastic pin housing break?

astral haven
#

ive dropped them and broken them entirely,

#

they are super cheap to replace unlike the port on my phone

empty wren
#

Fair enough redirected point of failure

astral haven
#

These dudes haven't broken yet

#

I've broken these however

empty wren
#

Maybe the cable I got was shit

astral haven
#

yea you gotta get the ones advertised as 20 pin or 100w thunderbolt 40gbps

#

dont actually put 100w through them obviously but you can

empty wren
#

Well I mean the volta cable is not cheap and it could do 100w at least with the version I got

astral haven
#

needs both

empty wren
#

Thunderbolt is definitely better in all regards

empty wren
astral haven
#

no it needs to be advertising 100w and 40gbps at the same time

empty wren
#

Oh

astral haven
#

otherwise its just some of the pins

#

i used to use that type, but its garbage

empty wren
#

I mean that is just specs, that second picture the middle broke down for me in a few months

#

And the pins became more exposed

empty wren
#

And one might think oh no I widened my port but nah whatever the adapter is made from is terrible

astral haven
#

yea

#

that was a problem with the lower pin count adapters

empty wren
#

Oh and a funny thing

#

Lighting was not backwards

#

Like lol how did they manage to do that

astral haven
empty wren
#

Cool 90angle

astral haven
#

yea they have all types on aliexpress

#

even 180 lmao

empty wren
#

Also I have another question do you not worry about pins shorting out from discharge or do you not keep the adapter in when out and about or do you cover it?

astral haven
#

my phone survives the usbkiller so im not worried

empty wren
#

Alright then

#

Been a while since heard that, I remember everything apple pro made videos with it excessively

astral haven
#

if i get water in the adapter, i just cant use it for a while and my phone complains alot

#

but i can still wireless charge

empty wren
#

Interesting

#

I meant from the environment

#

Some people said their port died from using the dongle pieces

crisp granite
#

sigh
as with all good things
they don't ship to canada, and it's a pain in the ass to work around

empty wren
#

Ship the watch?

crisp granite
#

the ID Cooling IS-67XT

empty wren
#

Oh some CPU cooler

crisp granite
#

available on Amazon.com, not .ca
and can't ship from USA to Canada

empty wren
#

That goes for basically anywhere amazon

#

Cannot region jump for delivery of non existent item in local database

crisp granite
crisp granite
empty wren
#

I mean you are not wrong

crisp granite
#

just not available

empty wren
crisp granite
empty wren
#

Damn that thing is slim

crisp granite
#

it's the best cooler that'll fit in my case

empty wren
#

Have you tried an external room radiator mm

#

But yeah looks nice

#

Especially for a loque raw s1

#

If you are still using that

crisp granite
#

yep

#

I'm just...not happy with this

#

this is stupid

empty wren
#

Not sold anywhere else?

crisp granite
#

not feeling like getting scalped hard and importing it from HK

crisp granite
#

also way more expensive than I'd like and overkill for my needs

empty wren
#

So you considered itmm

crisp granite
#

I considered a 120mm AIO
the one mounting point for it wouldn't work as I'd need tubes stupidly long

#

the mounting point is on the outer shell, components are mounted on the inside spine
so disassembly would require tubes long enough to be able to pull the inside spine out enough to expose the CPU mount, take that off, and finish disassembly

#

probably doable with a custom loop, but I haven't found an AIO that'll work

#

hm... actually
might work

empty wren
#

I wonder why so many people go for aios

#

Someone at work

#

Aio

crisp granite
#

hm

#

...35cm

#

probably long enough

#

ah yes the bad idea is formulating

empty wren
#

Also why are no small reservoirs and pumps

crisp granite
empty wren
#

Will look into that in December

#

Want to water cool my ghost

crisp granite
#

got a tophat?

empty wren
#

Bought it hated it

#

Pass

crisp granite
#

large top hat, specifically

empty wren
#

I did I thought

#

Color did not match

#

The alignment was terrible

#

Not to mention I bought new and was sent used

#

Like wtf

crisp granite
# crisp granite large top hat, specifically

that's the one real way to have a loop in a ghost without getting an ITX length card (could do a waterblocked FE NVidia card tbh) and a 120mm AIO nestled in whatever space you have left

#

ah...if money were no object...

tough crypt
#

cant wait for my new pc parts coming soon : )

empty wren
#

There is space in there

#

Ish

astral haven
#

"space"
"ish"
more of the ish and less of the space

crisp granite
empty wren
#

Yes quite lovely doge

crisp granite
#

nah I'm just...

#

damn the world has changed

#

I fondly remember playing metro 2033 on intel HD graphics like it was yesterday

#

because it was

empty wren
#

Damn

crisp granite
empty wren
#

Intel HD can run that

crisp granite
#

low settings, 720p

empty wren
#

Yeah but still

crisp granite
#

24-30fps

empty wren
#

Good enough

crisp granite
#

on HD520

ashen spindle
#

and intel hd runs the game at low fps instead of arc not running things or crashing havo

astral haven
#

eh

#

rose colored glasses

#

the stuff that doesnt run on arc also cant run on hd

#
  • more that require VRAM
ashen spindle
#

I think halo runs without having the artifacting that arc does on it and such

#

but yes its mostly a joke

empty wren
#

Halo MCC does not run well on arc sadly

astral haven
#

oh sure but for every game that artifacts on arc, there are 10 that dont launch due to not having vram on GEN

ashen spindle
empty wren
#

I play at 1080p never had an issue unlike my 970

astral haven
#

cs2 ran at like 25 fps 1080p all low on my 3090 until i updated my drivers

crisp granite
#

lmfao pathetic 💀

astral haven
#

updated drivers and its never dropped below 200 at 4k

empty wren
#

Oof talk about optimization

crisp granite
#

no CS2 mac port yet so I haven't actually played

#

...valve being buttheads

empty wren
#

You have a PC doge a PC

crisp granite
#

love that thing

astral haven
#

clicking heads in cs2 feels like cheating
im making flicks i never could before, but im struggling so hard with spraying now

crisp granite
#

talk to your urologist

astral haven
#

but also i didnt play csgo for most of 2 years

#

so im probably just incredibly rusty and forgetting how good i was

crisp granite
#

that happens naturally as men age

astral haven
#

that also cant run cs2?

#

probably not considering its an online competitive shooter

crisp granite
#

...the macbook pro just has the best screen, touchpad and speakers out there

to get comparable would cost more than just getting a macbook pro

astral haven
#

and the workshop is still not available 😦

crisp granite
#

best thing for watching movies in bed

astral haven
crisp granite
#

I hate touchscreens with a passion lol

astral haven
#

Copium

crisp granite
#

for me, the fact I don't need to get my nasty paws all over my screen is a boon

astral haven
#

and a laptop with a nice enough hinge is a tablet 😛

crisp granite
#

and yes, seriously

astral haven
#

first its objectively not

crisp granite
#

fingerprints are fucking awful

#

you don't need them on your mac

#

the finish of the screen and body (space grey) already are

astral haven
#

You dont have to use it lmao

#

but it makes my work significantly faster

crisp granite
#

then you prioritise that, for yourself

astral haven
#

but what tradeoff does the touchscreen bring to a non touch user?

steep creek
#

I’ve noticed fingerprints are more visible on MacBook screens than something like a surface, or yoga for example. Both screens are glossy so perhaps it uses some type of coating?

astral haven
#

yea apple doesnt coat their screens properly since they arent expecting people to touch them

crisp granite
astral haven
#

lmao says the apple user

#

it adds pennies

crisp granite
astral haven
#

an apple user?

crisp granite
#

Fym, hold my vodka

astral haven
#

apple spends more money on their inefficient machining of aluminum than any touchscreen would cost

crisp granite
#

better than injection molded plastic

astral haven
#

depends lel

#

it certainly isnt more durable

#

and its not as light as MG alloy

#

did newer macbooks fix the motion performance or is it still shit like the m1 screens for the response times

astral haven
#

its slightly better

#

still a jellowy mess compared to anything hfr (from most other makers)

ashen spindle
#

bc lol

astral haven
#

yea dunno how fixed it is, but laptops are really awful compared to most things

#

the surface laptop studio is relatively ok but id be shocked if it was faster than the first 120hz overclocked samsung tv lel

#

2023 macbook pro 16

#

">99% of all devices are better"

#

yea laptop studio isnt that much better
still actually under the static perceivable limit rather than over lel

empty wren
#

Anybody know how to properly use CRU, coulda sworn I had it work on my surface pro 4 but does not seem to work on my new laptop?

astral haven
#

does it show the resolution of your screen somewhere at least?

empty wren
#

1920x1080 at the detailed resolutions

#

Which is what windows says is present in the settings

astral haven
#

and its on an intel igpu?

empty wren
#

Uh some uhd one I think

#

Surface pro 4 has one too

astral haven
#

does it use the new control panel?

empty wren
#

You mean the command center?

astral haven
#

ye

empty wren
#

Yeah it has modern command center

astral haven
#

if yes, can you add the custom resolution in there?

empty wren
#

Well I wanted to overclock the hertz

#

Like I did to my surface pro 4 since yall conversing reminded me

astral haven
#

yea can you do that?

empty wren
#

On the control panel?

astral haven
#

custom resolution yea

empty wren
#

But monitor refresh rate?

#

Well I give up on it today, an option is not popping up

astral haven
#

you should be able to set both at the same time
CRU is a very heavy handed tool, you only want to mess with it after you have a stable OC

#

also many laptops use lvds screens rather than EDP
and lvds usually isnt overclockable at all

#

usually

empty wren
#

Hmm

#

Unfortunately cannot find much on Len40a9 so probably is an lvd

astral haven
#

Looks like there are higher models with 4k60 screens, it's possible they use edp on all to minimize parts

#

And keep pcb design easier

empty wren
#

Makes sense

astral haven
#

But yea there should be an option to add a custom resolution in the control panel, add it in with just 1 or 2 higher hz

#

If the option is missing, then and only then consider messing with CRU
But have an external monitor available

empty wren
#

Lol global settings is completely blank😵‍💫

astral haven
#

No Nvidia?

empty wren
#

No because it is a ultrabook

astral haven
#

The msi gs32 shadow had an Nvidia gpu

empty wren
#

That is cool

#

I just wanted a laptop with a decent keyboard Lenovo makes those

astral haven
#

It also had a pcie x16 slot on the back which was alot cooler

empty wren
#

Hmm that sounds very interesting

#

If you plug in

astral haven
#

Last model was 2016 😦

empty wren
#

Oof that is a long time ago

astral haven
#

Yea 😦

empty wren
#

Maybe framework will come up with something later similar 🤷‍♂️

astral haven
#

They really shouldn't, besides the cool factor of old style docking, oculink is just a better option

#

Nyways if you do wanna mess with cru, I can help you with the whole being safe while messing with that stuff
Feel free to ping me

empty wren
#

Cool I appreciate itmm

astral haven
#

Interesting the scuff mark from when I dropped my earbuds once is missing after Sony sent them back
They also aren't paired to my phone
They probably replaced the buds and not the case

#

Wtf sony
Default settings are noise canceling or ambient sound
None isn't an option without the app

empty wren
#

Is there not a physical programmable button to swap between them

#

Fiddling with the app seems a bit inconvenient

astral haven
#

yea, tapping the left bud switches between them

#

but it doesnt have "none" by default, it cycles just between noise cancelling and ambient sound

#

i forgot that even was a thing since i last set up these buds 2 years ago

#

i also wish you could change it from cycling to toggling
double tap doesnt do anything for some reason

empty wren
#

Interesting you use none

astral haven
#

yea the ambient sound doesnt help battery life and makes anything you play sound worse
the noise cancelling is even worse for battery, and is too good at cancelling for use day to day

empty wren
#

Yeah you make a good point

#

You must also have a good seal too

astral haven
#

with the xm4s its hard not to get a good seal

empty wren
#

My pixel buds pro go into the ear but with no sound and noise cancelling on I can hear people quite well

astral haven
#

the foams are excellent, and sony has always given me replacements when i asked

empty wren
#

Hmm I think Google offers foam tips too

astral haven
#

foams are very easy to mess up but i think sony did a good job

empty wren
#

Maybe this is an earbud issue but do you ever get a headache from using noise cancelling headphones

astral haven
#

i have the wf1000xm4s they are earbuds

#

but i havent had it on either these or the n400ncs

empty wren
#

Probably varies person to person then

astral haven
#

fyi anyone who says n400 noise cancelling doesnt work needs to try them in the subway
it works incredibly well you just need very very loud noises

#

so no it doesnt actually work that amazingly but shh

empty wren
#

For loud noises it definitely works well enough

#

If it gets loud at work

#

I can go into noise cancelling

empty wren
astral haven
#

yea the xm4s quiet everything down

empty wren
#

Like what?

astral haven
#

individual settings for individual commands

empty wren
#

Not sure I follow what you mean

astral haven
#

by default it just has a few preset options

empty wren
#

Do you mean equalizer?

astral haven
#

no for the touch controls

empty wren
#

Hmm

astral haven
#

i cant set doubletap to do something specific

empty wren
#

Damn wow

#

I expected like 5

astral haven
empty wren
#

Sony is slouching in the software department on that

astral haven
#

heres the selection "playback control"

#

and now you have seen 100% of the available options besides none

empty wren
#

That is a weird way to do volume

#

Maybe more reliable than what pixel buds do

#

Also how does the system know what function you are in

#

Like can you toggle noise canceling when listening to music?

astral haven
#

you set it here in the app

#

you get to pick these for each bud

empty wren
#

Oh you have different functions for each

astral haven
#

yea fortunately

#

its the same 3 options tho

empty wren
#

Cannot be hard to implement swipes

astral haven
#

i think the sony is just a touch detection sensor

#

not a touchpad

empty wren
#

Ahhhhhhh

astral haven
#

maybe different on the xm5s

empty wren
#

Are your sony ones also able to connect to multiple devices?

astral haven
#

yep

#

that was a firmware update that i am very happy they added

empty wren
#

Nice

#

I cannot wait for Google to push out the conversation update

#

Basically when the wearer is detected to be talking the buds will get out of noise cancelling

astral haven
#

sony is supposed to have something kinda like that but it doesnt work

empty wren
#

Hopefully they fix it in time

astral haven
#

in time for what
its gonna finish charging in the next 15 mins lel

crisp rune
#

shit~ man

astral haven
crisp rune
#

k

astral haven
#

gonna try again, maybe its not happy with my hub?

#

Oh you actually need to enable the assistive touch button
Then mice work with an incredible amount of lag

#

Scrolling is backwards

#

Ofc

#

External touch pads don't work

#

Unless they can emulate a mouse which is pain

#

So ofc the scrolling is backwards

#

And the lag holy smokes

crisp rune
#

ture

astral haven
#

Oh it's just the external display being incredibly laggy

#

Yea natively on the display it's fineish

steep creek
#

Ahah I see, that’s surprising. Lag on the external probably would make me stop using it

#

Backwards scrolling is something I’ve tried but never could get used to

cursive summit
#

What on earth is that

#

Why would anyone want that

old marlin
#

"yes"

#

calling it an "ai pin" is just admitting they have no idea what it is

cursive summit
#

Well it's a pin

#

In a broad sense

old marlin
#

and it is not an ai

#

cause that is not how an ai works

#

The Humane Ai Pin is the screenless, standalone device and software platform built from the ground up for AI

#

aka

#

android

#

with no screen

#

cursive summit
#

I'm having a hard time comprehending what does it do that something like a smartwatch doesn't

old marlin

includes AI-powered optical recognition and a laser-projected display,

💀

#

laser projected displays have never gone wrong

cursive summit

So it's just a smartwatch but worse havo

old marlin

it looks alright ig?

cursive summit

I don't see it being a smartphone replacer though

old marlin

in reference to how shit the kickstarter wrist phones looked

that demo is so bland

oh god

cursive summit

I mean it's an alright idea

old marlin

oh nvm

#

well yea

#

sure is an idea

cursive summit
#

What REALLY surprised me is that this is an actual thing that's happening https://twitter.com/rowancheung/status/1698467447228031021

Microsoft just filed for an AI-powered smart backpack patent.

The backpack not only hears you but also sees what you see.

Imagine a hands-free digital assistant that understands commands, can access cloud information, AND interacts with other devices.

Here’s the rundown:

#

AI smart backpack 😳

#

So take the pin and just make it massive lol

#

Although as I am virtually never not wearing backpacks, this is actually appealing

old marlin
#

lol

#

the pin seems better than that

cursive summit
#

It does seem better

#

A backpack is virtually an outside-only wearable item

#

Why would you really need the ability to "interact with other devices" outside

old marlin
#

I personally don't think we will go away from displays long term

cursive summit
#

Relatively successfully too

old marlin
#

eh

#

a picture is worth a thousand words is very true there

#

if you want your shopping list

cursive summit
#

This thing comes to mind

#

Samsung's portable projector thing

old marlin
#

having it displayed visually is a LOT quicker and more comprehensive than having it read out

old marlin
cursive summit
#

That's a projector?

old marlin
#

a projector is a display

cursive summit
#

What now

old marlin
#

it's not a monitor

#

but a display

cursive summit
old marlin
#

have you seen the resolution

#

it is a crutch of a display

cursive summit
#

Samsung Freeplay is not a display in any traditional sense

#

It's a projector

#

Which does display contents, but it's not what we correlate to a display like a 27" monitor or a TV havo

#

Although projection instead of physical reproduction with pixels is getting quite a bit more popular nowadays in consumer market

old marlin
#

I mean

#

anything displaying visual contents is a display

cursive summit
#

So, the AI pin is a display

#

Calling it a pin is still weird though

old marlin
#

yea but it is not really using it's display capability

old marlin
cursive summit
#

I do think that the whole notion of AI assistants is kinda cool

#

But wouldn't it just be easier to stuff it into phone software anyways

#

Or a smartwatch for that matter

#

Needing a separate item like a pin, which is very small and imperceptable tbf, is a bit of a hassle

#

The backpack sounds like just a meme though lol

old marlin
#

the backpack seems really odd

cursive summit
#

I do wear backpacks outside every single time though

#

So.. maybe they are onto something?

#

But you'd wear a watch or have a phone on you far more often so the pin makes more sense in that matter, it's a universal accessory

old marlin
#

reposted it in another discord

cursive summit
#

Also it's by iPhone engineers so that pin might be worth keeping some tabs on

old marlin
#

and they had a very valid concern

#

they gave it one week until it lands in a washing machine

cursive summit
#

Oh I bet those things would be easily IP68

old marlin
#

ip68 is not necessarly good for washing machines DANG

#

because ip ratings are stupid

#

and in some cases ip65 is better than ip68

cursive summit
#

Well yes IP ratings are a bit weird at times

old marlin
#

also they only rate with clean water

#

not soap etc

cursive summit
#

But I wouldn't be surprised an IP68 could easily survive a washing machine

old marlin
#

which is a problem

thick elk
#

Also not higher temperatures if you wash using that

old marlin
#

usually is just a waste of time and energy

#

besides the point anyways

cursive summit
#

I wish there were waterproofness testing labs for the public to see the results for

old marlin
#

the detergent is horrible for any electronics

thick elk
#

Hygiene / underwear but yea

cursive summit
#

Cause ngl, I like to take electronics to the shower to just scroll about while showering

#

So IP68 is a must

old marlin
#

bruh

cursive summit
#

That's why I'm going with Sony next cause they have multiple IP certifications so I'm really confident those have no problems with waterproofing

#

Well, water"proofing", more like just general resistance

thick elk
#

IP 68 is rated to drop in a tank of water, ip 65 is to protect against jets of water.

cursive summit
thick elk
#

That is good.

cursive summit
#

Hahaha I went to look up if my Poco is 53 or was it 55

#

It's IP53 so I don't take it nowhere near any water

#

This is literally my experience with software updates

#

A very nippy, great phone completely ruined with software updates

#

Planned obsolescence should be a crime in EU

old marlin
#

you love to see it

#

I will avoid miui now anyways

thick elk
#

I agree running a custom rom on my poco x3 pro

cursive summit
old marlin
thick elk
#

It's also naggy and somewhat buggy

cursive summit
#

That's why I'll go with Sony next just cause Sony stop providing software updates after 2 years

old marlin
#

it has no separate volume slider for calls

cursive summit
#

Software updates aren't a good feature, they are a nuisance

old marlin
#

it constantly suspends every app not active right now

#

even when you tell it not to

cursive summit
young pecan
old marlin
#

an iftt script to unmute my call to not miss a wakeup call is really useful if it only starts after I unlock my phone

thick elk
#

You can always run banking apps on that, without root on roms. And with root hiding it has always been perfectly possible.

old marlin
young pecan
old marlin

especially since phoens typically are 2fa devices

cursive summit

I never said anything about security updates

umbral heron

young pecan

Software update literally is security updates, 4shed.

cursive summit
#

Those are good

old marlin
#

reminds me

#

seen a funky phone today

cursive summit
#

I hate content patches, so android updates in a version upgrade sense

old marlin
#

has a removable battery with the wireless charging and nfc coil glued to it

#

screen is absolute ass though

cursive summit
#

Not sure why we moved away from the concept in the first place

fading cloud
cursive summit
young pecan

Just a thin boi battery that slides out of the bottom of the phone.

old marlin

if they can still have over 80% capacity after 1000 cycles they don't have to be removable

fading cloud

God damn

cursive summit
#

My wife's S20FE that I gifted her is already gimped lol

fading cloud
#

Geez, not that I would buy samsung

thick elk
#

The point with safety net is if you have root you can mostly just tell apps you pass it.
I have used root for ages and used it with a bank app that checks for root and safety net for years without much trouble. (outside a brief window where things had to be adjusted)

old marlin

every company does

Apple's shit

young pecan

Apple fucks up just as much as anyone else does.

fading cloud

yeah even apple makes sometimes botched updates i would imagine.

old marlin

apple doing throttleing updates was totally not a court case

old marlin

not at all

cursive summit

Last I checked my old iPod 5 is still hella fast havo

fading cloud
old marlin

just doing that it not ok though

old marlin
cursive summit
#

Buying a phone with the least years of android version updates and great internals is how things are done pepeyes

#

Sony is great, just 2 cycles I think of android version updates and several more years of security

old marlin
#

what

#

why would that change anything

#

if they wanna throttle you they will do it

young pecan
#

Honestly out of everyone I'm not leaving IOS. The rest of the stack has too many compromises in either functionality or stability.

cursive summit
young pecan
#

Just can't do it.

cursive summit
#

They notoriously don't release updates

#

Sony's support is bad, in a good way

old marlin
#

ios usability is complete ass imo

cursive summit
#

Why I also heavily regret getting a Samsung Tab S8 Ultra

old marlin
#

could stand a total of 3 days last time I tried it

fading cloud
# fading cloud Honestly I dont have an issue with that one, I am 99.9% my huawei phone does it ...

The battery is quite toasted, cant hold shit anymore only like 4 hours at best.
Slow, less slow in the performance mode.

BUt I am suspecting the NAND and the battery is toast, I did a storage speed test and at first it got 130mb/s but dropped to 14mb/s which suggests that the storage module will fail.

But the phone cost 500€ got it a 3 months later for 300€ *in 2018
And for 300€ it was a insane phone, better than my 800€ phone now

old marlin
#

but people cope a lot over that shit

cursive summit
#

You mean swipe for back?

old marlin
#

the thing everyone has been doing

#

yes

cursive summit
#

That shite is enabled by default on android nowadays

#

And is complete cancer

old marlin
#

not everywhere

#

I like it

#

in miui it is bound to the launcher

cursive summit
#

I despise having to disable it

old marlin
#

which immediatley makes it horrible

young pecan
#

Swipe back is fine when it works correctly, like oh i don't know, IOS. KEKW

old marlin
#

ios is just a mess

young pecan
#

Swipe back has worked flawlessly there since like IOS 7.

old marlin
#

my brother needed over 30 seconds to find out how to close his keyboard in discord

young pecan
#

Yeah that's not an IOS issue, in network engineering that's what we call a Level 8 problem.

fading cloud
young pecan
#

That is insane.

#

What?

old marlin
#

why do you have to swipe that down

#

instead of using the back gesture

young pecan
#

You don't? Just click anywhere on the screen.

old marlin
#

didn't do it

young pecan
#

Like in IOS.

#

Literally just click anywhere on the screen that isn't the keyboard.

cursive summit
young pecan
#

Vex knows.

cursive summit
#

Or just the back key lol

#

That works

young pecan
#

It's real hard to get more intuitive than 'click the thing you want'.

cursive summit
#

I hope Android doesn't ever disable the menu keys at the bottom for home, tabs and back

#

Cause I refuse to use swipe controls

young pecan
#

Skill issue.

cursive summit
#

Usability issue

young pecan
#

If you can't swipe from the side of the screen that's a skill issue. KEKW

cursive summit
#

I hate swiping

young pecan
#

What OS are you running specifically? Might just be jank.

cursive summit
#

MiUI on Poco

young pecan
#

THONK I need to google that.

cursive summit
#

I just don't like the whole thing swiping, I grew up with good old Nokias

#

I like tapping

#

Swiping is tiring

#

Nothing can ever replace a good old button

young pecan
#

Right so we're using a garbage Chinese sub brand phone with Chinese garbage sub OS?

#

Kek

cursive summit
#

It's so garbage that @pale sigil loves it

young pecan
#

Wow and that might mean something if that was a sample size in a few thousand.

fading cloud
cursive summit
#

just forcing them into swipe mode only is just alienating users

young pecan
#

I grew up with key phones as well, they're fine and all but swipe is just plain better for a bunch of things.

cursive summit
#

Hard disagree

#

Brain rot take "swipe is plain better" havo

young pecan
#

You wanna read the whole sentence before calling brain rot?

#

Bro is telling on himself that he can't read properly.

cursive summit
#

Nah I was just immitating what you usually do when you disagree dogenek

#

I will forever prefer good old tactile click

young pecan
#

Right, the difference is I actually read the sentence and call brain rot when the whole point is brain rot. KEKW

#

No swipe is better for a few really nice things, buttons are better for others.

thick elk
#

I don't mind gestures within apps, I just like the system navigation to use the buttons.
Especially when there is just too much vertical space relatively speaking on a modern phone anyway.

young pecan
#

With a modern smartphone I'd go swipe first because the benefits outweigh the downsides.

thick elk
#

I always hold my phone with two hands with my fingers mostly just using the bottom half.

young pecan
#

Mm I might be a little odd there.

#

Left hand holds the phone, all 5 fingers on my right hand do stuff on the phone.

#

Gestures and functionality are really goddamn simple when the phone always responds the same way and you can actually use them accurately.

thick elk
#

Never given them a good long try honestly but I will say I do like to use swipe gestures in apps themselves.
I am also not a typical user. Just like button navigation, especially with long / double press bound to different functions.
Long press back to kill double press app switch to switch to the previous app, and again to switch back.
And most importantly my fingers are naturally in the region.

I will also say my launcher is kiss launcher which may factor in as well.

#

so when I press home I am immediately faced with a keyboard to type the app I want to launch

young pecan
#

Yeah that makes sense.

fading cloud
thick elk
#

I care about a few things mostly.
Accidental activation, time to do certain actions (mostly go to home, switch to last task and switch back, open task switcher (even if the current one is garbage))
While only using the bottom half of my screen.

#

Any action involving that half just takes longer by nature of having to move my hand to a different position

fading cloud
#

You will get used to it. Id say I am as fast as before

thick elk
#

Hard to judge I mostly turn animations off in general

fading cloud
#

Ok

#

It throws me off without animations haha

young pecan
#

Yeah nah that's fucked. LUL

fading cloud
#

Tbh my Sony phone buggy wouldn't surprise me if that also contributed to it

old marlin
#

discord always is

thick elk
#

Little experience with discord on my phone.
Just use the browser version on my desktop.

fading cloud
#

I swipe back and the menu opens so , when the action is send to move back I get the same screen

thick elk
#

I will say either way it would be best if everyone settled on one mode of input.
If gestures didn't exist apps would have complete freedom of using their own gestures.
if buttons didn't exist well actually not much would change for apps.

fading cloud
#

Hence buttons on top are hard to reach

thick elk
#

I like the solution firefox has, simply put the nav bar on the bottom, it just makes much more sense for a mobile browser

fading cloud
#

There are many trade offs so everyone decides for themselves what is best

#

Personally I don't like a nav bar on the bottom

#

Like Firefox and there it starts

#

I don't like it you like it. What's best now?

thick elk
#

True, maybe I am forced to switch eventually. I can work with gestures, I just really like using buttons. Also just trying gestures they look indeed jankey without animations.
I will also say that I did notice some problems scrolling.
As my thumb moves a bit diagonal it can trigger the back gesture moving up.
But yea tastes do differ.

young pecan

No that's about right.

ashen spindle
#

Pcie to m2

cursive summit
#

I suppose pcie to u.2 is also a thing

ashen spindle
#

That’s why boards should just use more pcie instead of m2 slots bc these things exist

cursive summit
#

But these pcie to m.2 seem really gimmicky

cursive summit
#

That just makes a board longer

young pecan
cursive summit
#

My gigabyte b550 itx has 2 m.2 slots and a full length pcie16 while being a tiny ITX

#

Native m.2 slots are better than just more pcie slots, no?

young pecan
#

Nope.

#

Like let's put this into perspective, aye? 2 M.2 slots can hold 2 drives. A single x16 slot can hold anywhere from 4 to 8 drives depending if you want onboard logic on the card.

#

And let's say you choose to use a much higher capacity U.2 drive and want the resiliency that enterprise offers? Well you can choose to adapt PCIe to U.2 where as M.2 to U.2 is just a worse adaptation.

#

Or say you want to use a network card, capture card, sound card, etc. There are plenty of things that can connect to a PCIe interface and shit all that'll go from M.2, so why would I want more M.2?

cursive summit
#

Isn't the whole thing with PCIe that there's also a limited amount of bandwidth that a CPU can handle?

#

I think we call em "lanes"

young pecan
#

Mhmm, and M.2 use those same lanes.

#

An M.2 slot uses 4 lanes, a PCIe slot can use up to 16.

ashen spindle
#

That’s why it’s better to just give you x16 and you use it however you want

young pecan
#

Exactly.

ashen spindle
#

Harder to take 4 m2 slots and combine them into one if you want a other x16 device

young pecan
#

Mhmm. And remember some devices can't run on 4 lanes an M.2 slot offers.
