#

And they changed the middle ground ones to use the smaller one instead of larger midway through AM4

vagrant pagoda
#

that is what they replaced with ryzen though

reef patrol
#

Not what I'm talking about at all...

vagrant pagoda
#

yes

#

they added a low end slug

#

the stealth

reef patrol
#

They swapped which of the Ryzen AM4 coolers you'd get included with certain CPUs

Midway through AM4 era.

vagrant pagoda
#

yes

reef patrol
#

Skimping.

vagrant pagoda
#

they added the stealth

reef patrol
#

Not just that

#

After there were three models

vagrant pagoda
#

source?

#

they chagned the slug

#

dont remeber them getting smaller

astral haven
#

the difference tho was that intel actually doesnt give stock coolers that arent sufficient
and the intel stock coolers are actual pennies like the wraith stealth, and dont actually contribute to the proce of the cpu unlike the prism

#

and the prism is just not enough for "95" watts

#

tbh if it was actually 95 watts it might even be fine

vagrant pagoda
#

they work fine at 125w

astral haven
#

it throttles

#

at stock

vagrant pagoda
#

with what cpu?

astral haven
#

the cpu it comes with

vagrant pagoda
#

like?

astral haven
#

i forget, but i dont remember any of them not throttling

#

3900x

vagrant pagoda
#

5900 non x is the fastest that has a box cooler

#

4ghz all core is throttle?

astral haven
#

if it cant run cinebench twice without the second score being lower, its throttling

vagrant pagoda
#

no

#

its not throttling unless it going under the non boost speed

#

which is 3.9

astral haven
#

yea thats not how that works

vagrant pagoda
#

yes

#

heat soaking a cooler isnt throttling

#

by that logic every single aio thottles

astral haven
#

ryzen will drop under base clock if you push it hard enough on an open loop

vagrant pagoda
#

what

#

no

astral haven
#

run prime95 on stock and youll see

#

my 5950x is 3.2ghz base and itll drop under 3 if i put the right fft size in

vagrant pagoda
#

you running over power target then

astral haven
#

no?

#

its dropping the clock to avoid going over the power target lel

vagrant pagoda
#

thats what i siad

#

youre going over power target

astral haven
#

i dont consider that throttling

#

at least not cooler throttling

vagrant pagoda
#

yes

#

you dont go over power target in cinebench

astral haven
#

so clock is not a good indicator of sufficient cooler

#

when the clock is heavily variable thanks to the power usage of the program itself you have to ignore it

vagrant pagoda
#

in that review they were getting 86C on the stock cooler

#

which is under tjmax of 95

astral haven
#

good for it?

vagrant pagoda
#

sufficent

#

it isnt throttling

astral haven
#

prove it

#

show the results

vagrant pagoda
#

did you look at the review?

astral haven
#

yep

vagrant pagoda
#

where is it thottleing

astral haven
#

it shows 1 the performance always being lower

#

and 2 it doesnt show repeated results

vagrant pagoda
#

then show me the opposite

astral haven
#

first 3 results are not throttling

#

next 2 results are throttling

vagrant pagoda
#

non of those are ryzen stock coolers

astral haven
#

final result isnt throttling

vagrant pagoda
#

so it has nothing to do with the arugment

#

try again

astral haven
#

yea i cant find anyone running cinebench loops on them

#

but it is lower performance at stock

#

so even on the first run it will be lower performance than a cooler that doesnt throttle

#

the bigger problem is you have to pay for these coolers since they arent as cheap as the intel ones

#

and they include worse coolers on hotter processors too

vagrant pagoda
#

they have had the 4 heat pipe for the 90w+ for ages

astral haven
#

3600x

#

95 watts, full alu cooler until people whined and they gave them a copper slug

#

"95"

#

thats another thing

#

intel fkn actually doesnt lie about the power limits

#

they just let the processors ignore the power limits for short times

#

now thats also stupid

#

but at least theres a claim of precision in there somewhere

#

amd just makes up numbers

ashen spindle
#

yeah idk why amd isnt taking advantage of being much more power efficent on loads and just use real numbers instead of doing the same as intel for categories

astral haven
#

5600x released after r20 which automatically runs in a loop

#

and the score just keeps going down

#

now this isnt better than the intel stock cooler, but amd is costing us money on even these higher end cpus that solidly need better cooling

#

sure 5700g can get a stock cooler

#

same story as the 10400f for example

#

or 10400 non f

#

they throttle a tiiny bit but its not a whole ton

#

5% is the difference between the 5600x and the 5600...

"Huawei Mate60 Pro is definitely a magical phone. When it was first launched, the specifications were 7nm process and 8 cores. However, after the 116 version system update, it turned out to be a 7nm process, 12 cores and supports hyper-threading. Now the latest 121 version system update , and even directly upgraded to the 5nm process, which is really amazing."

Per GSM it's just a 7nm octacore

#

So Huawei is just.. updating specs with software updates?

#

Okay there is some sort of fuckery going on

#

With a software update they went on to match the speed of a snapdragon 8 gen 2, which is a 4nm chip

#

How did Huawei manage to somehow upgrade a chip with 4 more cores, and shrink the core design by 2nm with a software update havo

They delivered us one of the most competitive GPU generations with RTX 3000 and RX 6000

#

And then were exhausted or some shit and decided to drop a dump gen

#

Like, these would be amazing cards if the pricing wasn't so horrible from Nvidia and the terrible decisions with nerfing memory bus

#

AMD are just releasing cards that are just too expensive

ashen spindle
#

cs2 is not the normal game performance

#

the 7800xt loses basically nowhere to the 6800xt and is 150 lower msrp

cursive summit

7800XT should be like, 400$? To be considered a great offer at this point

ashen spindle
#

lmfao

dull rampart
cursive summit

dull rampart

So what gives in terms of AMD market share then?

cursive summit
# ashen spindle lmfao

So, you're saying that the fact that we can find brand new 6800XTs for 530$ or so doesn't hinder 7800XT's reception?

AMD AFMF and anti-lag+ basically

fickle ore

But I mean sheesh, beta was for months and pros have been playing it for longer.. Like WTF?

#

Whole volvo team use Intel gpu or what? Nobody had stutters?

cursive summit
#

I think the biggest issue is just shoving it out the door into the public so that millions of people that used to play GO now have to bother with reporting bugs and suffering stutters

#

Instead of.. people just being invited into the test to play it, if they want to

fickle ore
#

Agreed

ashen spindle
#

yet somehow basically everyone wanted an invite and anyone who had one basically didnt play csgo

fickle ore
#

Definitely feels more like alpha/early beta state to me than full release.

cursive summit
#

So, tough luck

ashen spindle
#

ok so far still a tiny minority so tough luck

cursive summit
#

You can't justify the fact they clearly completely botched and mishandled this launch

ashen spindle

given they are doing daily fixes currently, so give them some time, if it's not getting fixed soon sure then it's an issue

fickle ore
cursive summit
#

In a competitive game btw havo

#

I gave up because I was lagging in A SINGLE PLAYER OFFLINE GAME

#

It would just lag me out, refuse to acknowledge any inputs, and I'd just die to bots lol

#

How do you start to lag in an offline match

#

Just give us back CS:GO until they fix this mess

ashen spindle
#

maybe give them at least like a week and not just 3 days before you yell for a revert

pale sigil
#

Idk man

cursive summit
#

They never should have mishandled the launch like this to begin with

pale sigil
#

It shouldn't be released with this shite

cursive summit
#

Quin, go play it for yourself, see how long you last havo

ashen spindle
#

I'm not saying it doesnt happen or anything

cursive summit
#

Easy to talk when you haven't experienced the absolute mess they launched

#

It's a competitive game

#

Stutters, lag, freezes, bugs, glitches, etc should not be a thing

#

If those clearly exist in test build, why is this being rolled out globally

#

Keep it there until it's ready ffs, what's the rush

fickle ore
#

I literally couldnt play it, vulkan would make me go to 5 fps

#

and zone out for few secs

cursive summit
#

Btw, this game is nowhere near ready for launch

#

VACnet is not a thing, all of the sidemodes like wingman, gun game, flying scout, etc, a lot of the maps are just not there

#

So why the sudden rollout of what is clearly not a fully developed product

fickle ore
#

yeah a big fuck up, too bad they are not on the stock market dogekek

dull rampart
#

Damn, stock market is the real voting with your wallet everyone keeps talking about

old marlin

dull rampart

but collectively the stock market does influence company policy in a more real impact than most videogame consumers will ever be able to attempt by 'refusing to buy' given how capable big names are of having a baseline level of sales regardless of quality

old marlin

fickle ore
old marlin
#

If you want actual changes in the way a company is going

#

fickle ore
#

ah gotcha

dull rampart
#

as in, if you invest big time and then 'punish' a company for doing something stupid by selling off shares you won't make an individual impact

old marlin
#

Even then

#

With starfield you would have to be a BIG investor for it to even make a difference

fickle ore
#

No, ofcourse not, but you'd bet there'd have been a 5-10 % drop with the cs2 release state ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Could have gone other way too

old marlin
#

No

#

Valve has no stock

#

Not a thong there

#

They watch player numbers, case and key sales etc

fickle ore
#

thats why I said "would have been" ๐Ÿ˜›

old marlin
#

And how many people complain online

ashen spindle
#

if it lags but people buy skins it would still make stock go up

fickle ore
#

Streamers being the remainder 10% that still open boxes for viewers, gotta make money even if inconvenient

ashen spindle
#

yes thats why CS2 is the third most viewed game with 30% more viewers than valorant on twitch because nobdoy is playing or buying stuff

fickle ore
#

the new release def generated hype

ashen spindle
#

like the bot game I played had no issues, while having xiv in the background open too, watched I think olofmeister? play a game and nothing happend, it's not like every gun shot is giving you a frame drop lol

#

now sure its a 60fps stream only so its not showing every issue but its not like nobody can play

fickle ore
#

I don't have the time nor interest to test that

ashen spindle
#

maybe that works idk, point is its playable and im not going to crucify them for that in 3 days after launch

like yeah its not an ideal launch still

#

but its not like you have no way to play it now

cursive summit

I read that these (Timeless II) are apparently a major disappointment

I mean the looks design part, making the metal look almost like plastic

cursive summit

We were talking about Apple but I guess corsair applies here somehow havo

#

You just started talking about it all of a sudden so I was like, Apple makes plastic looking metal? dogenek

shadow minnow

cursive summit
#

Although I do have questions why do Apple always use glass on the back of their phones

#

Can always just do with metal

#

I guess it feels better? But then cases exist and why wouldn't you use a case

astral haven
#

Wireless charging

#

Anything carbon fiber doesn't work for the same reason

shadow minnow
#

You could use aluminum but it would have to be less than 0.25mm thick

wheat plume
#

Honestly, I never though I would say that compiling something to JavaScript makes it run faster, but I guess there is a first for everything
Brodie Robertson - Linux ON Scratch - 2023

cursive summit
#

It already has a titanium/aluminium body of I think 0.1mm/0.1mm already

#

So, why the glass on top

shadow minnow
#

Structural stability id think

#

0.25 because at the wireless charging frequencies itโ€™s apparently aluminum skin depth

cursive summit
#

Right so something with wireless charging?

#

Plenty of phones with just metal though

shadow minnow
#

Which of them has wireless charging

cursive summit
#

Hm, most of them?

astral haven
cursive summit
shadow minnow
#

Yeah but based on frequency you can have some thickness without too much impact. 0.25 is already huge loss

cursive summit
#

Ok I found one

#

Aluminum frame with plastic back

#

Reverse wireless charging

#

Which.. I have no clue how different that is from normal wireless charging havo

shadow minnow
#

It says reverse wired

cursive summit
#

Tf does that even mean

shadow minnow
#

That it can charge if you plug earphones or sth into it

astral haven
#

Reverse wireless = put earbuds on the back and the earbuds charge

cursive summit
shadow minnow
#

The usb port can output energy

cursive summit
#

"ceramic back or silicone polymer back"

#

50W wireless

#

50W is insane lol

astral haven
#

That's glass or plastic

cursive summit
#

Don't most vendors max out wireless to like 15W or someshit

#

50W is kinda insane

shadow minnow
cursive summit
#

Not glass either

shadow minnow
astral haven
cursive summit
#

Silicone polymer isn't glass either

shadow minnow
cursive summit
#

So, we can do something more than glass havo

astral haven
cursive summit
#

Cause glass is annoying

shadow minnow
#

Ceramics breaks very very easily

#

Possibly easier

astral haven
#

It's just like glass

shadow minnow
#

And I donโ€™t want the feel of plastic on the back of the phone ngl

cursive summit
#

Well afaik they are quite brittle

astral haven
#

Different formulas are different

cursive summit
#

Not even sure what the material properties of ceramics are nowadays

#

But silicone polymer back sounds interesting though

astral haven
#

Practically whatever you want

cursive summit
#

Basically plastic but more sophisticated?

shadow minnow
#

Anyways plastic backs on wireless phones we had for a while but itโ€™s reserved for lower end due to device feel

#

Also plastic likes to scratch

#

Very easily

cursive summit
#

I imagine silicone might be a lot nicer

shadow minnow
#

Matte back is very hard to scratch

cursive summit
#

Idk glass is just.. can we get rid of glass?

astral haven
#

Also if you want a plastic back, you can just get a case

shadow minnow
cursive summit
#

I know it's very resistant to scratches but glass is just bleh

shadow minnow
#

Why though

astral haven
#

Then put on a case...

shadow minnow
#

Frosted glass has nice feel and is very scratch resistant so why not have it

astral haven
#

Glass is very good at protecting the internals, very good at absorbing shock

#

And you can put plastic on top

cursive summit
#

Last I checked Apple and co tend to bind the frame to the glass, so you have to pay a lot more for it to replace it in case glass shatters

#

So, I'd rather there not be glass there

astral haven
#

They stopped doing that

#

And everyone else just uses a bit of glue or tape

#

Also back glass is far better than using the front glass as structural...

#

Samsung
Google
...

#

Think that's fixed now

thick elk
#

For me glass just doesn't do it, and the case argument while valid also adds bulk to the phone.
I just really prefer plastic, why use a fragile material if all it does is push people towards using cases.

cursive summit
#

Plastic is a whole material science in and of itself

thick elk
#

Even the relatively cheap plastic back on my poco x3 pro is fine.

pale sigil
#

Am I the only one who prefers plastic on the back of phones?

#

Bloody hate glass

thick elk
#

I definitely do.

young pecan
#

Personally I love the feel of glass but it's the angles of the phone that do it for me.

thick elk
#

of course plastic comes with the drawback that you need some kind of midframe for structural support of the phone itself.

pale sigil
#

People were annoyed about the Pixel 7a having a plastic back

#

But I was so happy haha

#

Glass is slippy and easily breakable

young pecan
#

Finger skill issue, ngl.

pale sigil
#

If you have a case then it becomes completely pointless.

thick elk
#

I personally never owned a glass backed phone.
My first smartphone had a plastic back, my second one a metal one (arguably also quite stupid) and my current one plastic again.

pale sigil
#

I've had glass a few times

#

Feels nice but I just don't like it and it broke easily

#

Same shit with other phones

thick elk
#

Kind of weird to say that I am still on my third smartphone.

#

Started rather late with the whole thing in 2013 and being on my third in a decade is quite normal I think

pale sigil
#

HTC, HTC, iPhone, iPhone, Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel.

#

Both iPhones were handed down though and one I used for a few months as my htc broke

#

And the second one blew up

thick elk
#

For me Samsung, ZTE, Xiaomi.

#

Yes it's android 8 update was in limbo due to US sanctions at the time.

pale sigil
#

HTC was during the older tech days when android was terrible so my first one after years became horrible, second one sadly became faulty and the camera unusable (known issue).

thick elk
#

It did release eventually and custom roms went to 8 just fine.

pale sigil
#

iPhone 5 was because my HTC broke and iPhone 6s lasted me a year and blew up.

#

Samsung S7 was by far my favorite phone

#

S7 and my Xiaomi are my longest owners phones and both were swapped due to battery issues.

#

S7 I think I would have kept for 2 or even 3 more years but the battery was just unusable.

#

Had to charge it multiple times a day, it was horrible and unreliable, I tried to replace the battery but couldn't and no one else would due to the fragile design, even Samsung broke the screen when replacing the charging port which failed but was under warranty.

For me my note 3 lasted me until I fell with my bicycle at it's ripe age of 4 and a half years. Granted the GPS barely worked at that point. My axon 7 was just slow at some point and well android 8 was quite old in 2021. So now my Poco X3 pro does nicely.
I did replace the battery on my previous phones on my note 3 I had 3 of them in my wallet.

pale sigil
#

The poco x3 is nice

#

Thankfully this pixel 7a you can replace the battery easily

#

It's just the battery is garbage lol

thick elk
#

Honestly replacing the battery on my current phone seems quite doable, thanks to not having a glass back.

pale sigil
#

Afaik Xiaomi also don't rely on you removing the screen to replace shit on most of their phones.

thick elk
#

Well if you have a glass back to remove, it's barely any better. that being said a screen replacement does require you to tear down everything from the back first.

pale sigil
#

Tbh I considered replacing the battery for my M9T but it's a pita and after I tried out a pixel in the store I realized my m9t ran bad xd

thick elk
#

Generally the most likely part to fail next to the battery.

pale sigil
#

Thank you EU for forcing battery replacements though.

#

Or well pushing for it.

thick elk
#

Oh I noticed the jump to my poco x3 pro in terms of speed quite well. It was really at that point I realized how slow my old one was.

pale sigil
#

I wish I got a poco instead tbh

#

The newer one

#

This Pixel 7a is genuinely utterly garbage if you care about battery.

thick elk
#

I will say that I would never use one with the stock rom though.

pale sigil
#

I love miui

#

I wish I could use it on my pixel

thick elk
#

I recently tried it for a bit and I found it quite terrible to use.
Constant nagging, apps in the background not staying alive when they should.
I have not used it enough to really learn it but enough for me to want to return to an aosp based rom with some tweaks.

#

Wish I could use Micro G but sadly it's incomplete and qr codes on backing apps failing is a big nono for me.

pale sigil
#

Oh ye

#

I can understand that

#

Not sure why they would fail unless you rooted

thick elk
#

First of all if you are rooted magisk hide and such work perfecly fine.
The problem is Micro G does not have all the google play api's, it's mostly fine but the one 2 different Dutch banking apps use for scanning QR codes was not implemented in Micro G.

pale sigil
#

Ah

thick elk
#

Actually the bank I use myself (ING) does not even care about root. Just the one I access via the app at Work (Knab).
But yea that's easily solvable.

#

I probably avoid it even if they fix it, chances are reasonably high that such an issue pops up again and it seems considering this one has been open since 2022 it may take quite a while before such a thing gets fixed.

vagrant pagoda
#

i mean magisk has been able to hide root for years

thick elk
#

Definitely, for as long as there have been apps that detected root have there been ways to hide it from them.

wheat plume
#

Ah....got to love YouTube

Suggesting a video absolutely shitting on the mouse I just got

#

the G305 is absolutely horrible out of the box

tough crypt
#

building my first pc soon hella nervous

wheat plume
#

It's great so far for me
Though the clicks are a bit loud

astral haven
wheat plume
#

Can I mod the left and right clicks to be less loud?

astral haven
#

probably?

#

likely more about resonance in the case, a bit of foam is probably gonna fix it

wheat plume
#

I wanna use it on lab classes...so it'll need to be less loud :/
Already self conscious about the sound of my laptop keyboard when typing

astral haven
#

if you have a laptop, you can use your thumb on the trackpad to click while pointing with the mouse

#

tho i suppose thats alot easier with the lenovos that ive got at work since they have the clicks above the trackpad

#

also this is why i was recommending the mx anywhere

#

the anywhere 3s is 100% silent

#

for example

wheat plume
#

Oh...

#

Good idea

#

I mostly need the mouse for lab classes cause the touchpad on my new laptop is actual garbage :/

#

It's large which I like
But the accuracy is not good
And about 1 in every 15 times I boot the laptop, it glitches out, like full on spasm attack , double clicking..holding down left click, holding down right click.... Moving the pointer across the screen in random directions

#

Takes maybe 3 or 4 reboots to get it back to normal

astral haven
#

go into windows and do all the firmware updates

wheat plume
#

There wasn't any

#

Well
I did apply it cause the touchpad doesn't work out of the box on Windows
So I had to use my wired mouse and plug it in to the the windows setup

astral haven
#

oh its not a precision trackpad?

#

thats really messed up in 202x

wheat plume
#

Going back to the smaller touchpad in my previous laptop
It's so fucking good

#

But almost too small to do any multi-touch gestures :'(

#

But the accuracy is amazing

astral haven
#

does it say windows precision?

wheat plume
#

I never misclick or anything

wheat plume
#

Idk
I don't have Windows in my new laptop anymore

#

And before you say it.....

No, this isn't a Linux issue
The touchpad was just as garbage on Windows

astral haven
#

yea im aware

#

but also boot up windows and see if there are further firmware updates now

#

a bunch of laptops take 6 months for all the launch bugs to be fixed

crisp granite
#

Get a MacBook next time

#

:)

astral haven
#

or a windows precision trackpad

wheat plume
#

I can just check the website
Got to login to my account and go to the support page to select my device
Then they send me a zip file with a bunch of drivers

That's how I got the touchpad to work on Windows

astral haven
#

yea but thats not always the full situation

wheat plume
astral haven
#

lenovo pushes a ton of firmware updates via windows updates

wheat plume
#

But then going back to linux would undo that?

astral haven
#

firmware updates

#

bios

wheat plume
#

Oh

#

Right yeah

astral haven
#

also ECM updates

wheat plume
#

ECM?

astral haven
#

the microcontroller that runs the lower level stuff in the laptop

wheat plume
#

If Windows had a live session you could boot into from USB
Then I'd check for updates

astral haven
#

it does

wheat plume
#

But it just boots directly into installer :/

astral haven
#

the difference is the installer and the live boot are different things

#

it makes the windows installer smaller

wheat plume
#

How boot into live session?

astral haven
#

you make a windows to go usb

#

rufus supports it tho you have to download the iso direct from microsoft instead of the customized one from the media creation tool

wheat plume
#

Oh ...

#

That's an idea for next weekend

#

Cause I'm not bringing both laptops to my aunt's house

#

The touchpad is so so damn good on the previous one
I wanna swap them ;_;

astral haven
#

will say i havent tried windows 11 to go, it might not work well, ive used a 10 live since release

wheat plume
#

Got to love how Rufus is Irish

#

Hek yeah

#

You can tell cause the website is jank looking and doesn't adapt to phone screens either

astral haven
#

I think thats more its a desktop program that is likely to never be needed or useable on a phone

wheat plume
#

Yeh xd
I just make fun of Irish websites cause most of them are either garbage looking or not fully functioning, or both

warm night
#

rufus is great but ventoy changed my life

wheat plume
#

Ventoy ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

warm night
#

truly

wheat plume
#

Idk how it even works but it's magical

astral haven
#

ventoy is not particularly compatible with secure boot

#

its pretty awful for diagnostics

warm night
#

it worked enough for me at least, it booted and whatever but secure boot is not really something im too bothered about

wheat plume
#

I don't have secure boot on

astral haven
#

yea ventoy is ok for your own computer

warm night
#

i just use shims and whatever to make windows 11 happy and linux actually boot with secure boot enabled and go about my day

astral haven
#

but windows to go you can plug into any computer and without even power cycling you can boot into your own os

#

at least if its a windows or mac, linux might need a power cycle

wheat plume
#

I'm thinking of installing it to the external HDD I have

astral haven
#

and chromebooks windows live support is also jank

wheat plume
#

So I have portable Windows on HDD

astral haven
#

thats a really bad idea

wheat plume
#

Hmmm?

astral haven
#

windows on hdd is pain

#

especially now

wheat plume
#

Yeah I know
I just need it to check for driver updates on my laptop

warm night
#

dunno how i lived with it for so long

astral haven
#

do you really not have any 64GB+ usb3 drives?

wheat plume
#

I have a 64gb one

warm night
#

if youre on linux fwupd might support your laptop and i think that does various firmware updates and stuff if you're wanting windows to give you a firmware update

#

think i saw firmware mentioned earlier

#

if not ignore me i am delusional

wheat plume
#

I tried fwupd but it said there was no updates

Idk if that's true or it didn't support my laptop

astral haven
#

you are correct quadrilateral but i was more meaning not just the bios

warm night
#

lets go

#

i got something somewhat right

warm night
#

theres a list of supported devices somewhere

wheat plume
#

I doubt mine is on there

warm night
#

what is it

wheat plume
#

It's a semi custom OEM build

warm night
#

a

wheat plume
#

From PC specialist

astral haven
#

what is the odm?

wheat plume
#

Uhh.....
Some place in China I can't find information about even after typing the name and address on the underside of the laptop into Google Maps

astral haven
#

pegatron? clevo?

wheat plume
#

Nope

astral haven
#

linkie?

#

also name and address could be legal contact not actual manufacturer

steep creek
#

At least with this one it doesnโ€™t look like the grill is trying to compete with the ge90โ€™s in air intake

wheat plume
astral haven
#

why not get one of the more well known odm devices ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

do you know the model number your laptop is based on?

wheat plume
#

Cause I couldn't find a laptop with these specs for the same price as this one
That also had this slimmer form factor

astral haven
#

just be patient

#

anyways too late for that

#

model number?

wheat plume
#

16gb ram
1tb SSD
Core i5 10th gen
Design doesn't look like it's from 2008

โ‚ฌ580

wheat plume
astral haven
#

screen diagonal?

wheat plume
#

I think 13?

astral haven
#

they dont seem to have much 13
maybe 14?

wheat plume
#

If I can remember my password I can login and check the spec list for this build

#

Oh
It's 14

astral haven
#

well shoot
i searched all the 14s and they seem to have removed all the 10th or even 11th gen laptops from their website

#

lovely

wheat plume
#

Ohh

steep creek
#

Can perhaps use the way back machine if itโ€™s helpful

wheat plume
#

50.8Wh
Oh that explains it

astral haven
steep creek
#

Understandable

wheat plume
#

Wayback machine + Chinese website = slow af

astral haven
#

the wayback machine is slow in general for unpopular sites

#

but sites that dont even retain old data means that even finding out the right webpage to search would be a nightmare

steep creek
#

Yeah it to be honest took quite a while to load the Apple.com website too, canโ€™t imagine it on lesser known ones

wheat plume
#

This is the last fw update in their website

astral haven
#

yikes

#

uhhh

steep creek
#

Aha

wheat plume
#

This is what they sent me to get the touchpad working

astral haven
#

my 8th generation laptop had updates in 2022

wheat plume
#

Also need this to get the SD card reader to work

#

Funny how both of these work without issue on Linux

astral haven
warm night
astral haven
warm night
#

was a fun experience fresh installing to realise i had 0 networking ability

astral haven
#

both are very problematic on both oses

wheat plume
#

Yes
But the touchpad literally didn't work on Windows until I download and installed those drivers

Windows didn't even know it was actually there physically

#

Device Manager didn't see it

warm night
#

that's unfortunate

astral haven
#

yea that means its not a windows precision trackpad

wheat plume
#

No shit
It's not at all precise

astral haven
#

and any trackpad that isnt windows precision on windows is just gonna be pain

#

no not talking about precision the ability of the device
"windows precision" is a spec for touchpads

wheat plume
#

Yeah I know xd

steep creek
#

I really underestimated the precision trackpad features. Just setup the four finger gestures they work quite well

astral haven
#

my external trackpad isnt particularly precise, but since its windows precision its pretty nice to use

fair gull
wheat plume
#

Touchoad Gestures in Windows are nice
Too bad the laggy jank animations ruin it entirely for any desktop navigation gestures

fair gull
#

cant install a driver for a device thats not visible

#

well you technically can but it doesnt do anything

astral haven
#

and the animations are only laggy on slow computers

steep creek
#

I think theyโ€™re alright in windows 11, in 10 I wasnโ€™t too fond of them

wheat plume
fair gull
#

which is not too unsual

astral haven
#

also thats not entirely true, you can have a driver package that tells the ecm to enable the device physically

fair gull
#

touchpads arent that fancy

#

they are ps2 devices on almost all laptops

#

same for the keyboard

astral haven
#

only on the garbo touchpads

fair gull
#

ah yes synaptic and elan

wheat plume
fair gull
#

the garbage companies

astral haven
#

its not about the companies tony

#

its about the drivers they use

#

if the touchpad pretends to be a ps2 mouse, and interprets everything internally, it will not be a great experience compared to a real windows precision touchpad

#

elan and synaptics make precision touchpads, but they just use the windows drivers for them afaik

wheat plume
#

Do Windows Precision touchpads work on Linux?

astral haven
#

yep

wheat plume
#

Ahha

astral haven
#

its an "open" standard

steep creek
astral haven
#

the problem is that windows has poor palm rejection

wheat plume
#

I don't really use the virtual desktops on Windows

They are a UX pain in the ass to use

astral haven
#

and palm rejection is up to the os

wheat plume
#

Not at all a smooth experience

steep creek
#

Same I never use them

astral haven
#

yea i have 3 fingers to swap between apps

wheat plume
#

I use them all the time on Linux...partially gnome desktop

astral haven
#

4 fingers is media controls

wheat plume
#

Yep
I love the media Gestures on Windows

#

I need those on Linux so badly

steep creek
#

I have this multimedia volume knob which Iโ€™ve gotten too used to

wheat plume
#

Oo nice

fair gull
#

they all worked smooth af

astral haven
#

trackpads

#

you cant implement a device as a touchpad over ps2

wheat plume
fair gull
#

now we get into touchpad vs trackpad again

#

i wont re-have this discussion

astral haven
#

the problem with ps2 is you have to perform all the conversion into mouse inputs in "hardware"

#

the os cant tell where your fingers are

steep creek
wheat plume
#

Oh damn

fair gull
wheat plume
#

I got volume up and down FN layer keys

fair gull
#

unless you wanna start fighting them companies of them touchpads

steep creek
#

Thatโ€™s cool

astral haven
fair gull
#

direct touch sucks anyway ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

wheat plume
#

Apparently my laptop has a clickpad
Not a touchpad

Since it doesn't have physical left and right clicks on it

#

Wtf xd

#

I tap to click

astral haven
fair gull
#

just like old ballmice are 2 rotary encoders but the computer component that device emulates is a mouse

astral haven
#

exactly

fair gull
#

so your point is nothing is anything

#

great

astral haven
#

a trackpad requires a touchpad be a physical component of the device

#

but the computer doesnt see the touchpad if it is using ps2

#

it sees a trackpad

#

actually are there ps2 signature pads?

fair gull
#

the computer couldnt care less what it is... it sees an HID device moving a mouse

astral haven
#

and thats not the case for a precision touchpad

fair gull
#

well not the mouse the cursor

astral haven
#

on a precision touchpad, the os is given a set of touch samples

#

the os then determines what happens from that

steep creek
#

Interesting stuff Iโ€™m curious of how it works so well

astral haven
#

software

fair gull
#

it doesnt work well

astral haven
#

its all software

lime rock
#

hi there,
is there any technical difference between 60he or TWO he?

fair gull
#

you blindly stab at a slab of plastic hoping your hand eye coordination and muscle memory can touch the right thing on your screen

astral haven
# fair gull it doesnt work well

if all you have used is ps2 attached trackpads
you have not used a windows precision touchpad
do not make claims about how well something works if you have not used it please

wheat plume
steep creek
#

I mean gestures like two fingers to zoom, scroll and so on, works pretty alright for me at least

astral haven
#

ye they work great for me, even better than the mouse based ones

wheat plume
#

On a touchpad you start at the center no matter where the cursor is on screen, usually

steep creek
#

Yep

lime rock
#

TY

astral haven
#

that also should be true for any trackpad

#

tho if you know your cursor is on the right, you might want to start on the right so you can bring it to the left faster

wheat plume
#

True

#

But you don't have to guess where anything is, unlike what Tony said xd

astral haven
#

yep

#

tony i think is mixing up hardware design and software implementations

warm night
#

a trackpad with absolute positioning like that would suck man

steep creek
#

Maybe itโ€™s just me but honestly canโ€™t tell much of a difference between the new surface / lenovo trackpads and the MacBooks, in terms of accuracy and gestures

warm night
#

imagine having to use that

astral haven
#

ive used them actually

warm night
#

it cant be nice but youll probably get used to it

astral haven
#

its better than the old style trackpads

#

no joke

warm night
#

tbf i play osu with absolute positioning on the tablet but thats gotta be different

astral haven
#

ye and for drawing its a different story

warm night
#

I feel like on a trackpad it's way worse

#

yeah

astral haven
#

but if you are doing stuff like general windows usage on a laptop, you can get used to it

#

you just gotta think of it like a really awful touchscreen

warm night
#

without the screen

#

its just a touch

astral haven
#

well there is a screen

#

its just not behind the touch

warm night
#

this is true

astral haven
#

think of it like an overhead projector

warm night
#

but a touchscreen implies you touch the screen

astral haven
#

or an elmo for you newfangled folks

warm night
#

a what

astral haven
#

smart board if you are a zoomer?

steep creek
#

Iโ€™m pretty sure our smart board in elementary school had absolute positioning

warm night
#

oh

#

yeah smart board

#

used those in school

astral haven
#

elmo is the old version of the smart board

#

and the overhead projector predates the elmo

warm night
#

i see

#

we had projectors still

#

theyd just project onto the board

astral haven
#

not a digital projector

#

1s

warm night
#

oh yeah wait ik now

astral haven
#

An overhead projector (often abbreviated to OHP), like a film or slide projector, uses light to project an enlarged image on a screen, allowing the view of a small document or picture to be shared with a large audience.
In the overhead projector, the source of the image is a page-sized sheet of transparent plastic film (also known as "foils" or ...

warm night
#

yeah

steep creek
#

Hah the memories

wheat plume
#

Anyone else's school never figure out how to get the projector aligned to the screen properly ?

warm night
#

we had one of those for when we had like an assembly

steep creek
astral haven
wheat plume
#

At my school
More than half the image was falling onto the wall behind the screen

astral haven
#

oh lol get rekt

warm night
#

in ours they always had the image contorted in the worst way possible

astral haven
#

yea our installers here were pretty competent

warm night
#

barely legible

wheat plume
#

And going off the sides too cause the screen was 3:4 and the projector was 16:9

#

.-.

steep creek
#

This was in elementary though so kids will be kids

warm night
#

lol

#

all ours were 4:3 except this one classroom that had a cool 16:9 touchscreen one

wheat plume
#

Xd

warm night
#

but it was massive and 1080p so it looked pretty meh anyway since the room was small and you were always close to it

astral haven
#

anyways imagine if the smartboard was on your desk, and the projector was still facing the wall

#

you could eventually get used to it

warm night
#

ye

astral haven
#

it also had the big advantage of not requiring any gesture to get from one side of the screen to the other

warm night
#

yeah thats true

astral haven
#

with those ancient tiny trackpads it could take 3 swipes to get from one side of the screen to the other

warm night
#

glad to have missed that era

steep creek
#

Personally still prefer a touch screen as much as possible

#

Just find itโ€™s quicker to for example close a program when my cursor is on the opposite site

astral haven
#

same

#

tho i have 7 screens at work and i can reach the 2 of them that are touchscreens

#

so for the others i kinda need something pointer based

steep creek
#

Thatโ€™s fair. I use just the laptop for when Iโ€™m at university so it works out

astral haven
#

yea a laptop without a touchscreen is a tragedy

steep creek
#

I really canโ€™t get used to it

astral haven
#

if you dont want to use it, dont, but dont make me suffer

steep creek
#

Yea also I like standing up and working sometimes, and being able to lay the screen more flat like on those yogabooks is very nice

warm night
#

wish i had touch

#

or a laptop that didnt spin up the fans to ps4 level of noise if i open more than 3 tabs in chrome

#

besides that its pretty good

wheat plume
steep creek
#

Haha yeah I can relate to that, mine spins up so loud when just idling / charging

wheat plume
#

MacOS got that part right

steep creek
warm night
#

luckily its silent when im just taking notes and stuff

#

would be pretty awkward if i had a jet engine equivalent in front of me during a lecture

astral haven
wheat plume
#

The cursor spends most of the time on the left side of the screen

So having the window buttons on the left makes more sense

astral haven
#

but only if you put them at the very top

#

otherwise if you click at the very top of the screen, you wont hit the window buttons

steep creek
#

It depends on the application, in visual studio code for example the run code is on the top right, my cursor usually hangs out there most of the time

astral haven
#

at the top right corner, you can flick to that location and your cursor will naturally end up on the button

#

macos, flick to the top left and your cursor will end up on the menu button

wheat plume
#

Bruh
..... Use a fucking monitor

#

No wonder your experience was shit

#

Oooo m.2 SSD slot too

#

Color price differences...

warm night
#

how do you get light black

#

if you add lightness to black doesn't that make it grey

wheat plume
#

Also the image makes the black one look less dark than the light black xd

warm night
#

also is it just me or does light black look darker

#

yeah

wheat plume
#

Xdd

#

Steam Controller V2 maybe???

astral haven
#

bad photoshop lel

coarse cloak
#

why would they do it like that

astral haven
wheat plume
#

Fuck off xd

astral haven
#

๐Ÿ˜›

#

actually tho that was their next set of controllers

#

using very similar tech, and the deck even can play the same games

coarse cloak
#

edge is in MacOS too?

wheat plume
coarse cloak
#

that's amazing

ashen spindle
#

its just a chromium reskin now basically

coarse cloak
#

yeah, current edge is fine as a browser
if it's not "googled" to the ass like chrome

#

ungoogled chromium is the way for me when I need chromium fork

wheat plume
#

All browsers on Mac are just Safari with different UI anyway

#

Or is that iOS?

steep creek
#

iOS

#

And iPad os I suppose

wheat plume
#

Yeah

astral haven
#

macos allows custom browsers

steep creek
#

Edge isnโ€™t too bad but I donโ€™t use it much

coarse cloak
#

yeah

astral haven
#

says something that the most effective antivirus on macos is windows defender lel

wheat plume
#

Defender is on Mac?? Xd

astral haven
#

yup

#

and even on ios tho its of very limited use on ios

wheat plume
#

O o

astral haven
#

yea defenders performance gets something like 30x worse without cloud

#

yea i think they rebranded it

#

weelllllll

#

windows server does routing

#

not well, but you could run your entire stack on windows

#

at work we use windows for about half of the services a home router would be in charge of!

vagrant pagoda
#

you can run the entire network on windows servers

#

and loads of networks do that

#

that was almost standard in the 90s/200s

astral haven
#

the one problem is windows server for NAT is not good

#

it is very very inefficient

vagrant pagoda
#

not important for the target market of enterpirse though

astral haven
#

what???

#

how fkn rich do you have to be to not use nat???

#

actually nowdays its not even a matter of money, its a matter of when did you get founded

vagrant pagoda
#

they had multiple class as back then lol

astral haven
#

yea only some companies

vagrant pagoda
#

and thats who ms made ms server for

astral haven
#

we were outerino back then

#

and microsoft wasnt just targeting companies as old as them, they were targeting newer companies too

#

the entirety of the dotcom bubble was built on nat

#

people vastly underestimate the use of windows server

#

the only difference is windows server installs have been sitting and working in server closets with minor maintenance for 10 years

#

and slowly people migrate some stuff to a different platform like websites and stuff

#

but theres still a ton of them lying around

cursive summit
#

Well that's your own fault Su

#

Moats are best castle defence

DIG A DITCH

pale sigil

Im never buying a pixel phone at launch again

why buy anything at launch if that is a concern

pale sigil
#

It's my first proper launch product haha

#

Except for maybe the 5600x I got but expected to be cheaper after

marsh glade
#

Why buy any flagship phone at all?

pale sigil
#

Actually tbf my last phone I got at launch but it was the opposite

#

You got a discount

#

Pixel 7a ain't flagship though

old marlin
#

the 7a is 6 months old now

#

ah, almost 5 sorry

pale sigil
#

Ok and? I'm still salty about it was my point.

old marlin
#

oh I thought you were talking about a recent thing, not something that happened 5 months ago

pale sigil
#

Nah

#

I just got reminded because now even the pixel 7 itself is much cheaper than 7a launch price

old marlin
cursive summit
#

Also flagships last a long time, so I'd buy one just to have the best experience for a long time

#

At least I don't really buy phones every 2-3 years, and then they are mostly mid-range 300$ ones

tranquil onyx
#

But the real question is why upgrade your phone every year?! I donโ€™t

cursive summit
#

Poco X3 been lasting me a good long time now, not a bad chinesium phone

#

Really really wanting a Sony Xperia though

tranquil onyx
#

Iโ€™ll be upgrading my iPhone 13 to an iPhone 15 in August of 2024 ๐Ÿ™‚ I go with the base models of iPhone, the one with the two cameraโ€™s ๐Ÿ™‚

cursive summit
#

Whatever floats your boat

old marlin
#

at this point at least

tranquil onyx
#

I donโ€™t mind either phones.. a phones a phone, itโ€™s all I ever use it for ๐Ÿ˜‚

old marlin
#

why upgrade to the 15 then?

cursive summit
#

Huh, isn't the wifi chip built-in into the SoC on androids?

#

Why is zenfone 10 wifi-7 compatible but xperia only 6e, both being on snapdragon 8g2

tranquil onyx
#

@old marlin the only reason why I upgrade is because itโ€™s free for me to upgrade after the two year contract is up ๐Ÿ™‚

pale sigil
#

I've been considering selling my pixel 7a tbh

old marlin
tranquil onyx
#

It does ๐Ÿ™‚

old marlin
#

would prob be cheaper to not have a contract that offers that though

pale sigil
#

Id rather have a slower phone with superior battery

old marlin
tranquil onyx
#

Not really @old marlin

pale sigil
cursive summit
#

But seriously I'll prolly be getting an Xperia 1 at some point, cause that's the best looking phone, with an amazing screen, 3.5mm jack, great internals

old marlin
#

huh

#

how long does it last?

tranquil onyx
#

It equates to the same price.. in the long run @old marlin

pale sigil
old marlin
#

instead of when you want to

pale sigil
#

3-4hr sot if lucky

old marlin
#

wtf do you do with it

pale sigil
#

Discord, Whatsapp and rarely something else.

tranquil onyx
#

Iโ€™m not forced, itโ€™s when/if I want to.. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I can say: no I will continue with this phone.. etc.. and still have this phone for another 2 year contract

old marlin
#

what drains your battery so quickly then

#

cause that ain't right

#

that's not great battery life

#

but also not as bad as you get it

old marlin
pale sigil
#

Idk but I'm not the only one

cursive summit
old marlin
#

your provider doesn't do that because they are so nice to you

old marlin
tranquil onyx
#

I like contracts though.. @old marlin instead of having to save up for 3 months.. so I can buy an iPhone 15 flat out..

pale sigil
tranquil onyx
#

Doesnโ€™t matter

old marlin
#

if you need to save for 3 months to buy a phone then at least properly save for it

#

instead of paying more over the course of 2 years

#

for a phone you admit to not needing

tranquil onyx
#

2 years is good for me ๐Ÿ™‚

old marlin
#

that is impressive

pale sigil
#

You see

#

I almost got the a54 or even 34

old marlin
#

giggle smaller battery than an apex pro mini

#

so far really happy with the A54, has the usual samsung bs tho

#

aka it just installs 6 apps without asking

#

you gotta let it install all of them, THEN delete them

#

otherwise it might reinstall them

pale sigil
#

@cursive summit I don't even have any games other than chess installed lol

old marlin
#

lasts me ~2 days

pale sigil
#

Background apps are Whatsapp, discord and Gmail.

tranquil onyx
#

Oh damn!! Long battery ๐Ÿ˜‚

pale sigil
#

Pixel 7a has bad idle too

old marlin
#

the endurance rating is not how long it lasts in total just fyi

pale sigil
#

People suspect it's the modem or antenna

#

As it constantly pings none stop

tranquil onyx
#

Oh ok.. thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ @old marlin

old marlin
#

oof

#

the 7a is capped at 18W charging

pale sigil
#

Ye

old marlin
#

the a54 is "only" at 25W

tranquil onyx
#

Phones should support 100 Watt Fast Charge ๐Ÿ™‚

old marlin
#

which isn't that good

#

but could be worse

old marlin
#

and charges at "120W"

cursive summit
#

Controversial take but, I don't think battery really matters

tranquil onyx
#

Alsoโ€ฆ canโ€™t wait for phones, batteries etc.. to switch to Graphene.. runs cool. Never overheats, near infinite charge cycles, can charge a phone in 10 minutes from 5% or so to 100% the benefits of Graphene Batteries will be perfect ๐Ÿ™‚

old marlin
cursive summit
#

12 hours of charge imo is good enough for a phone to recharge after, let's say a workday

#

At least I'm not particularly annoyed with battery charge on my Poco at all, holds well and charges whenever necessary

old marlin
#

I had a poco before

#

charged quite quickly as well

cursive summit
#

Pocos charge extremely quickly

old marlin
#

but miui is just absolutely horrible

cursive summit
#

Just the chinese lack of care for battery life lol

#

Watt it up

tranquil onyx
#

Has anyone here heard of Graphene Batteries?! ๐Ÿ™‚ I have!!
