young pecan
#

I mean you can literally live there.

#

So.

cursive summit
#

We haven't really had a proper nuclear disaster tbf

young pecan
#

I mean we did.

#

Hiroshima.

old marlin
#

depends on what you count as a nuclear disaster

cursive summit
#

The bomb?

young pecan
#

But y'know, people live in Hiroshima now, so ig the bomb is useless kek.

cursive summit
#

I can't think of a case where a nuclear reactor imploded uncontained

young pecan
#

That's because it hasn't happened.

cursive summit
#

Don't think that's ever happened

solemn remnant
#

hmm? happened today to me in the toilet

cursive summit
#

Again nuclear power is pretty damn safe

young pecan
#

See this is the answer. In all likelihood going to the beach without sunscreen one time is more cancer juice than almost every human alive ever sees from nuclear reactors.

#

They are truly overwhelmingly safe compared to all other choices.

cursive summit
#

See??

young pecan
#

WOAH BOI

Visual GPT. :O

cursive summit
young pecan
#

I did not.

cursive summit
#

OpenAI has an early AGI in labs

young pecan
#

??

cursive summit
#

They achieved literal AGI apparently

#

Their engineers been tweeting about it

#

Planned release sometimes 2027 or so

young pecan
#

Well that's interesting.

#

That's what, a minor technological improvement away from AI sentience?

cursive summit
#

There's apparently an absolutely massive model even bigger than Gemini, if you can believe, they are also working on releasing

#

Before AGI one, so 2025?

young pecan
#

Not surprising.

cursive summit
#

But yeah we should see Gemini really soon

#

And that's a massive step

young pecan
#

Look all I'm hearing is AI AFK gamer bot.

#

Finally I can not grind levels in MMOs.

#

And y'know, it'll actually behave like a human lmao.

cursive summit
#

That is extremely likely

#

Gemini especially cause it's going to have a memory of like a million tokens

#

Which is insane

young pecan
#

Gonna be fun for sure.

misty saffron
#

they should rename to closedai

cursive summit
#

Cause AI is bordering on the level of "high danger level global scale security threat", we should not allow random people to just train their models on state of the art technology

#

Open models will always have a place, but certain ones should be regulated and closed

gusty kiln

Basically the entire web page for the pixel 8 pro

for the next 10k years

mild dome
#

300 years if you use Molton Salt Reactors. Which from what I can see would be used for new reactors

#

Still a long time, but way better then 10k years. At the very least it means if a future post apocalyptic civilisation finds it, it's be safish to handle

old marlin
mild dome
# old marlin why 300 years for molten salt <:pepeThonk:662921537099399178>

They utilize shortbus neutrinos
"MSRs enable cheaper closed nuclear fuel cycles, because they can operate with slow neutrons. Closed fuel cycles can reduce environmental impacts: chemical separation turns long-lived actinides into reactor fuel. Discharged wastes are mostly fission products with shorter half-lives. This can reduce the needed containment to 300 years versus the tens of thousands of years needed by light-water reactor spent fuel."

old marlin
#

ah

#

you mean molten salt nuclear

#

thought you meant molten salt solar

astral haven
#

yea molten salt solar only has danger times in the weeks or even days lel

mild dome
#

Yeah sorry we were talking about nuclear billiards, and I didn't think to specify

A better explanation seems to be here
https://whatisnuclear.com/msr.html

What is nuclear?

Molten salt reactors are completely different types of nuclear reactors than those currently operating. They have interesting benefits, and a different set of problems. This page discusses what they are, what they can do, what issues they face, and their history.

astral haven
#

heres the crazy part tho

#

we actually have an incredible reactor already bombarding us with radiation

#

enough radiation to power the earth for a year for every day it runs

#

and its gonna run for the next billion years

#

literally just need to build a bunch of solar panels and water towers

mild dome
#

Not viable in all regions, but they should be considered first where possible. Also probably cheaper then nuclear

Funnily enough I think most of the "water towers" use a different kind of molten salt because it's too hot for water

astral haven
#

no i mean for power storage

#

and their viability is pretty incredible

mild dome
#

You mean punp water up, and drain down?

astral haven
#

yup

#

anything we get good at building becomes cheap

#

we just need to get good

mild dome
#

Yeah, would work well, provided the region has goodish weather and isn't too far away from the equator.

#

Here in Oz we been looking at making artificial hotsprings for a sort of geothermal energy. Dunno how that's going

astral haven
#

oz?

steep creek

i wont use it much either, but its nice to have the option i suppose

astral haven
#

and i wont use it either, but only because apple isnt making phones with better cameras

steep creek
#

yea lol, i'd like to see more zoom on the cameras

astral haven
#

sony should be giving us a 48 megapixel 6x fingers crossed

#

and samsung is apparently going for a 50 megapixel 5x

#

very sad about the 10x going away, but 50mp 5x is more density than 10mp 10x

steep creek
#

yeah i read briefly about samsung introducing a new sensor for the s24 series, that might compensate a bit for the 10x going away

#

but ultimately would have to wait and see how it fares

astral haven
#

a new 50MP 1/2.52” sensor with 0.7”m pixels offering 5x optical zoom

#

still a smol boi

steep creek
#

hm, software cant only do so much as well

astral haven

ye
its all about the optics

steep creek
#

yep

astral haven
#

if they throw a f4 lens on there, its gonna be awful for 10x

#

throw a 2.8 on there and theres a chance

#

someone should go for it and put a f0.95 lens on a smartphone

steep creek
#

hah that would be interesting

#

tho given how its going, maybe they are focusing on just making clearer photos with way less zoom

astral haven

wdym you wanted your photos to be in focus?

ive been using an iphone se for the past 2 years, about to get a 15p from work, gonna see how that goes

#

btw not being able to reach the top right of the phone on android can be super ok, theres always options to customize everything, I already have my notifications bound to a swipe on the right side of my screen since i cant reach it already

#

and you are allowed to put your apps wherever you want on the home screen lmao

steep creek

yea i know on some of them you can also swipe in the middle of the screen to get the settings panel down

astral haven

thats a launcher thing

still though being able to change the launcher, lol

#

also seems that the max is fragile lel

steep creek

i also read it has heat issues, but not sure if these are few isolated cases or an actual issue

#

the 15 pro and max

astral haven
#

first iphone to fail the zach durability test since the iphone 7

#

he did the standard bend test and the back glass cracked

steep creek

ah yeah that was surprising to see

#

the finewoven case was also really fragile, a fingernail could leave a permament mark on it

astral haven

that im not shocked by

#

my current case is pretty fragile too

#

looks great tho

#

and it also has besides changing look held up extremely well

im sure it feels great too, just im not willing to pay 799 nok for such a fragile case hah

steep creek

actually looks really cool

astral haven

steep creek

yeah i prefer the camera design of the s21 as well, but other than that its not too bad imo

astral haven

y samsung

#

the 21 had such a nice bump, protective and intentional looking

steep creek

this cant be the same color as the s21 right? this one looks much darker to me

both

#

it also adds magnets

steep creek

hm yeah looks the same

astral haven
#

i have a magnetic mount in my car

hollow vortex
astral haven
#

around the edges yea

#

the back material is nylon cloth

steep creek
#

i have a spigen tough armor just out of habit, but now i dont take my phone out when running anymore

#

because of the watch, so i think ill look for a thinner and lighter case

hollow vortex
#

I use thick cases with all of my phones

#

the phone being indestructible is just too good to give up

astral haven
#

fair enough

hollow vortex
#

dropped this thing a few hundred times probably, not a thing happened

astral haven
#

so far tho ive mostly been careful outside of my house

#

and at home i use my phone in bed

steep creek
#

fair, it gives more assurance

astral haven
#

so worst case it falls of the bed and is only around a 3 foot drop

hollow vortex
#

one thing I want to recommend is having the phone case slightly more popped out than the glass screen

#

it can prevent the ground from reaching the screen

astral haven
#

i broke my s8 the one time i brought it out of its case for cleaning

hollow vortex
#

oof

steep creek
#

yeah my phone rarely leaves the pocket / backpack when outside so for me its not a big risk anymore

hollow vortex

hollow vortex

astral haven

it landed on its back and flipped over and cracked the front i think

what gave it that much momentum

astral haven

nope i was washing it in the bathroom

#

landed directly on a corner on the tile

hollow vortex

that is comedically unfortunate

astral haven
#

yep

#

ended up still using it for 6 months and the front crack was pretty small for quite a while

hollow vortex

swapped to a new phone or replaced?

astral haven

bought the s21u on release, and the cracked screen gave me an excuse to save up

hollow vortex

I like the feeling of not using one

astral haven

that definetly depends on the phone

hollow vortex
#

true

astral haven
#

the s21 felt very grippy to hold without a case

steep creek

yeah my 14pm is just very uncomfortable to hold without one, the edges are sharp and its a bit slippery

the s8 felt like a greased weasel

Makes your device more bulky

#

Pointless, I know

astral haven

The problem killing premium Lite is not that I couldn't just block everything, but rather that I know blocking ads is just leeching off the platform.
Premium lite offered a nice middle ground for that.

I am not bothering to watch an ad, at least I can boost youtuber's algo performance somewhat

Why as much hate as it gets youtube is still a pretty good video platform, certainly not perfect but pretty good regardless.

steep creek

someone i know is still subscribed to premium lite, to my knowledge he hasn't recieved such a mail. maybe its country / region specific?

astral haven

and its definetly by far the most useful platform as well as the most varied

I just got it a few minutes before posting

so it could just be spread out over time.

You get: watchtime and merch sales
I get: ad free viewing and google not getting ad revenue

Pretty much

cursive summit

I love the new movement of plushie sales

I can't say I like every single youtuber selling shirts is something I like

thick elk

it's not like youtube is an easy platform to copy either, there are no good alternatives.

cursive summit

LTT at least sells some great useful stuff

But the new plushy movement is great, would love to buy a plushie from each of the peeps I am subscribed to

google has been trying to get rid of youtube forever basically

I have watched project farm or whatever the lad's youtube is called

So, they are "worth the money"

But not really worth buying cause why on earth would you spend 70$ on a screwdriver

hollow vortex

the cheaper stuff on amazon is lower quality

not really no

and alot of the more expensive stuff on amazon is lower quality too

I may have to rely on LTE internet in a new place for a few months. any recommendations on what router to get? they are pricy

thick elk

I personally prefer something from an established manufacturer that is actually less expensive in europe PB Swiss for example.
That being said in practice I found the cheap ones to be good enough, and actually cheaper chinese screwdrivers are plenty reliable.

hollow vortex
#

what of ltt stuff are you talking about apart from the screwdrivers

#

the box cutter?

astral haven
#

clothing?

#

all the cheaper stuff on amazon just falls apart

hollow vortex
#

yeah amazon isn't good for clothing

astral haven
#

and the screwdrivers have been objectively tested to be far better than normal stuff on amazon

hollow vortex
#

but there are stores you can just go and buy stuff from

astral haven
#

yea and they also sell low quality garbo

hollow vortex

60$ is a lot of money in most 3rd world countries and they sure as hell don't walk around naked

smoky frigate
thick elk

Anyway it is well established that you pay a premium for merch, even if the end product is good it will be at a higher margin.
Screwdriver being sort of a top end product here makes it different.

hollow vortex
#

you just buy it at high prices

#

it isn't costy

thick elk
#

Most people who would buy the LTT screwdriver are not deciding it on it's merrit and would otherwise buy a different premium screwdriver

astral haven
#

sure but im paying $30 in the store for a garment that was made for 12c in china

there is good chineseum and bad too, not surprising

smoky frigate
#

so it turns out there is one mobile network ISP near the new place, offering good coverage (radio tower right across a town in a crevice, same height) and a true unlimited plan for 30bux a month

#

should be fine. potentially great! hope it doesn't turn out to be crap. I'm taking a plan that can be flexibly cancelled, just to be sure.

astral haven
#

at least if you are USA

smoky frigate
#

germany. you wouldn't think it, but network-wise, we are right in the shitter. I would expect that quality of the signal highly depends on locality, but since me and the tower are both situated on buttcheeks that are right next to each other (there is a town in accompanying buttcrack, with bad coverage lol), I don't expect it could possibly be awful

#

maybe I jinxed it by voicing my expectation. the alternative is 6mbps DSL (lol), which is utterly laughable

astral haven
#

sure but you aint getting 30 for true ulimited in the us at all

#

well thats 3x the speed of the dsl available here đŸ€Ł

#

next cheapest ISP is $60/mo

smoky frigate
#

you have an alibi, huge country with plenty of mountains in between. we have buttcheeks masquerading as geology and fit snugly into Texas

astral haven
#

sure but i live in one of the populated areas by some descriptions

smoky frigate
#

60 bucks for snail-pace internet is pretty unreal

astral haven
#

well no its not 60 for dsl

#

the dsl is 40

#

for 60 you get 300/10

smoky frigate
#

well that's miles above anything I can get

astral haven
#

id be shocked if you couldnt get that with a proper antenna over lte

smoky frigate
#

I could theoretically get Starlink, but waiting for the ancient satellite dish to triangulate Elon's fat ass in the sky is gonna make playing games online impossible

astral haven
#

thats not how it works

#

but no i mean with your cellular connection

smoky frigate
#

oic. Possibly. but I'm not going to break my bank over a router, I might as well install a cable TV connection in my home for 500-1k bux and enjoy internet over that.

astral haven
#

????
if you have the option of going cable, why bother with cellular?

smoky frigate
#

I don't, it would have to be installed

astral haven
#

if you can get it installed, its an option lel

smoky frigate
#

and physically installing a cable is about as much money as some of these high-tier LTE routers

astral haven
#

at work here weve gotten 5 digit quotes for installing cable or fiber

#

3 digits is definetly an option imo

smoky frigate
#

I've seen it quoted a few times. but before any of that, I'll make do with mobile internet.

#

it might be bad, but it might also be okay. hell, I might even keep it

#

only one way to find out 😛

astral haven
#

my point was more that if you spend a few hundred on directional antennas, you can get lte to be the speed of cable
and saves you 5 digits in the process

smoky frigate
#

what do you think the latency in games would be like?

astral haven
#

the higher the bandwidth, the better it would be

#

if you see 3 digits on any of these 3 graphs, its not gonna be a perfect experience

smoky frigate
#

thanks for that site! downloaded my current results for reference

astral haven
#

gah why

#

3 up

smoky frigate
#

oh boy. how will anyone ever beat that. /sarcasm

astral haven
#

well thats not fantastic

#

its only 1 result over 150 tho

smoky frigate
#

this line is getting cancelled anyway

astral haven
#

thats the dsl?

#

get a better cell lel

smoky frigate
#

16 mbit, what I currently have, yup. only got it 2 months ago, minimum length of the contract is 24 months. but since the new place has only 6 mbit, they have no choice but to let me out of the contract, since they can't provide the same speed at the new place. I will just have to wrangle with their bureaucracy for a while, which is always fun. fun!

shadow minnow
#

Ngl I wonder what may be causing that

astral haven
#

Routing, and shared lines

shadow minnow
#

Probably

astral haven
#

or possibly interference with the dsl

smoky frigate
#

it does explain why I usually get good latency, but sometimes it hangs

astral haven
#

big problem with dsl is it uses relatively low frequencies and really really long wires

smoky frigate

yuck.

dealing with the bureaucracy will be the worst aspect of it all, but I'll survive.

There is no way to prove that apple doesnt have a way to collect data

because people make bs claims, and we dont need those claims to stand

#

i do trust that apple does

#

but thats not the same as being able to prove it

#

prove that ios isnt the wild west

#

the problem is you have zero insight on what the phone is running

#

I can right now check every process that my phone is running, how much memory it is using

#

down to the kernel

#

need to fiddle with a few settings and turn on a debug mode but its still an option

halcyon moss
#

Can you trust the kernel though

astral haven
#

I cant, but its possible in theory, and has apparently been done

#

if i wanted to trust the kernel, i would get a phone that lets me install my own kernel

#

and thats a possibility while remaining within the android ecosystem

shadow minnow
#

You can’t entirely trust your phone still tbf, microcode and hardware exploits will always haunt us

astral haven
#

sorta
if you can affect the kernel, you could in theory run your own fuzzing on the hardware to check

#

and im pretty sure that both ios and android are designed in a zero hardware trust manner

shadow minnow
#

I mean hardware in terms of temperature change causing an instruction to be changed, very hard to do precision needed but not impossible stuff

astral haven
#

sure but you cant run those tests on an ios phone

if you can install your own kernel, you would

astral haven

It’s always a Swiss cheese model imo.
You can add layers upon layers of security but you can’t ever guarantee the holes won’t align, you can just make it way less likely

astral haven

young pecan
astral haven
#

sure but it pretty frequently allows NSO group to do that...

young pecan
#

Android does a bunch of that as well so thank fuck it’s not as bad as normal Linux. Still sideloading gives it more Wild West than IOS does.

astral haven
#

the problem is more the proof

young pecan
astral haven
#

you actually can make proofs about what android does

young pecan
#

We have absolutely plenty of proof for what an iPhone does, what? That’s like the entire goal of jailbreaking and reverse engineering.

#

People like unc0ver have well understood what’s happening deep in IOS for quite literally more than a decade.

astral haven
#

sure but its actually difficult to prove that that is what the iphone will always do

young pecan
#

And android is somehow immune to that? No.

astral haven
#

android itself is

#

android phones arent sure

young pecan
astral haven
#

i can chose to install a copy of android that has no updates

#

even if connected to the internet

young pecan
#

And yet you can’t prove a future.

astral haven
#

yes i can

#

if i can prove that x will never change, then x will not do something that it doesnt currently do in the future

young pecan
#

No you really cannot. Nothing and nobody can prove the future preemptively. You can make educated guesses but that’s about it.

#

Thanks quantum mechanics.

astral haven
#

aeon thats actually not true

#

you only need the given i think therefore i am to be able to make truth proofs

young pecan
#

I mean if you want to be technical about it it is very true because of quantum bullshit. But if we go by phones? Also true.

astral haven
#

quantum bullshit doesnt climb steep energy gradients

#

and functional software is an extremely steep gradient

young pecan
#

What?

#

That’s literally called entropy.

#

You can absolutely have quantum bullshit climb energy states. It doesn’t on average, but it does do it.

astral haven
#

the only way to climb steep gradients is to pull entropy from somewhere else and apply it

#

however given a bounded system, you can in fact make proofs

young pecan
#

Yep, and thanks to quantum tunnelling that’s actually possible in reality. Unfathomably unlikely but possible.

#

Thanks quantum bullshit.

astral haven
#

quantum tunnelling doesnt climb gradients

#

it bypasses gradients to directly acheive a low energy state

young pecan
#

It can go the reverse.

#

Quantum tunnelling isn’t a guaranteed head toward a lower energy state.

astral haven
#

sure but it doesnt stop in the middle of a steep enough gradient within the lifespan of the universe

young pecan
#

So what you’re saying is there’s a chance. weSmart

astral haven
#

just because something has a chance of existing doesnt make it true

young pecan
#

Does it by definition not make it true?

#

Unlikely to the extreme but still a true fact.

astral haven
#

for reasonable definitions of true? yes

young pecan
#

Pfff. We use scientific and mathematical proofs here.

#

Not this lame ‘probably won’t happen’.

astral haven
#

and you cant make scientific or mathematic proofs without probability

young pecan
#

Right and probability wise it’s probably not happening. But what you’re telling me is there’s a chance.

astral haven
#

at least not ones that are predictive

young pecan
#

Scientifically there is a chance.

#

A small one, but there is.

astral haven
#

not rigorously

crisp granite
#

...oh my god can we just skip to the bit where one of you is calling the other a gypsy or weak sperm?

young pecan
#

Doesn’t matter, it can still happen.

crisp granite
#

this is going NOWHERE

astral haven
#

@crisp granite actually you are the only one wrong here, we are narrowing in on the core of the disagreement still

young pecan
#

Shhh, Debil. Arguing over the fact that quantum mechanics can make literally anything happen at any time for no reason is the best.

astral haven
#

aeon at least has a defensible position

young pecan
#

Hey it’s true. Quantum bullshit does quantum bullshit.

astral haven
#

sure

#

but quantum bullshit doesnt change predictions

young pecan
#

It doesn’t which is why you can make a guess on the future, not a proof on it.

#

Hence my original point.

astral haven
#

i will predict that i am currently not inside the sun, and will remain as such for the next 20 years

#

anything with lower probability than me being inside the sun within the next 20 years i will treat as untrue

young pecan
#

Which is a very good educated guess but quantum mechanics tells us that can very much change for no reason.

astral haven
#

well no

#

quantum mechanics says we cant be certain about that

young pecan
#

Well yes. A star could form on top of you. That’s valid with physics.

"You can't predict everything! There is a 1/100^10^100 that a quantum whatsit causes all software everywhere to suddenly transform into spyware usable by Google!"

young pecan
#

So it makes changes on prediction when you observe it, but when you don’t you haven’t collapsed a waveform so it can really do anything it wants.

young pecan
mild dome
#

Do you know what a googleplex is?

young pecan
#

I am aware and quantum bullshit makes it look like a joke.

#

But it could happen regardless.

astral haven
#

but making predictions that rely on that happening will not be useful to us

young pecan
#

While this is true, I am technically correct. The best kind of correct.

mild dome
#

I mean there's more of a chance that the universe just ends right now then functional spyware is produced from quantum shenanigans, but you aren't planning on dying in the next hour due to it

astral haven
young pecan
#

Ah but technically and logically speaking it is not wrong.

astral haven
#

again that depends on your definition of wrong

young pecan
#

Say what you will but the universal laws define it is possible a Google Pixel develops Chinese spyware out of nothing.

mild dome
#

Carmon, he isn't going to admit it

young pecan
#

Admit what? I’ve become very technically correct. :D

astral haven
young pecan
#

This is very true. But as the original statement said, you cannot guarantee a future proof, you can only ever make a very good future educated guess. That was my initial argument here and I’m yet to see it disproven.

#

:)

astral haven
marble grove
#

idk which server to ask this so im just doing it here, should i upograde from a 2070 super to a rx6800 xt?

young pecan
#

That’s a very good educated guess.

mild dome
#

For the everyman it's enough

astral haven
#

then we disagree on the definition of guarantee

young pecan
#

A guarantee is by definition a 100% chance of happening. If quantum bullshit plays even the slightest game it is not 100%.

astral haven
#

that definition of guarantee is useless because it cannot be used in reality

mild dome
#

Like as pointed it, it's more likely the Earth gets quantum tunnelled into the sun, then quantum whatsits creating usable software out of nowhere that suddenly replaces EVERY existing copy of that original

young pecan
#

Nobody even one time mentioned every copy would need be replaced and it’s not even up to developing software in the first place.

mild dome
#

Going "WeLl AhKawrLy QAtum DudEnaMIcs" doesn't make you clever

young pecan
#

Say a quantum bullshit happens and tunnels into your NAND and fucks a single bit, like a very unfortunate bitflip, this causes sudo to not have a password. Technically exploit that can be used by existing spyware.

astral haven
#

but you can build software that requires thousands of coherent simultaneous bitflips

#

and its actually not that hard to do

#

and its pretty frequently done

young pecan
#

Nowhere is it defined all of them can’t be flipped in the same picosecond.

#

:)

astral haven
#

execpt it is

young pecan
#

Ah but is it? The way entropy works it’s possible for a bit to flip for no reason just in the phone with no external fuckery.

astral haven
#

thats not how entropy works

young pecan
#

That’s exactly how entropy works. It’s just a measure of how evenly spread out energy is, but give it can happen in reverse, that is entropy can fall just like it can climb, it is possible for the bit to flip.

astral haven
#

wait wtf

#

excuse me how have you solved the problem????

young pecan
#

Lemme go find a thing.

astral haven
#

the reversal of entropy is literally the biggest problem in everything

mild dome
#

Aeon be here with his perpetual engine about to make infinite dollars

astral haven
#

the only reason we are still working on physics is to figure out how we can reverse entropy

mild dome
#

Well that and because it's cool as fuck

astral haven
#

well then its fun and not work 😛

mild dome
#

Aeon is probably gonna bring up the demon gate?

young pecan
#

Ok yeah I can’t find the specific graph I wanted without digging through a 2 hour YouTube video or 70 page scientific document but basically entropy follows a bell curve which is slightly skewed toward high entropy. It can just randomly reverse or even instantly heighten the entropic value but it’s exponentially less likely the more severe you make it.

astral haven
#

thats a misunderstanding of what entropy is

#

yea the demon gate is a good example

young pecan
#

I’m dumbing it down pretty hard for the sake of discord.

#

Fuck talking about quantum bullshit and entropy in a more refined way than quantum bullshit.

astral haven
#

yea but theres no disguising entropy reversal

#

if you think entropy can be reversed, you dont understand it deeply enough

young pecan
#

That mistakes what entropy fundamentally is. It can reverse but almost always doesn’t.

#

It’s essentially up to quantum bullshit.

astral haven
#

you are mixing up energy gradients and entropy

young pecan
#

No, I know the difference.

mild dome
#

I think he's referring to a statistical model that shows on occasion if you have a box full of gas you might on occasion see all the gas cluster in a corner effectively giving you a concentration of energy for a brief period, and therefore seemingly reversed entropy until it disperses itself again.
However you cannot get such a system to perform useful work

young pecan
#

Wait true. Entropy does have 2 primarily used definitions in physics.

#

Thanks scientists. -_-

astral haven
#

welllllll thats an opinion

#

from my understanding the information theory and the physics entropy are the same

young pecan
#

Like if we go by the thermodynamics definition it’s possible to reverse locally through quantum bullshit and quantum foam, but that’s like
I don’t actually know how big that number would be in scientific notation.

astral haven
#

im not sure what you mean by 2 definitions in physics tho

#

again no aeon

#

thats a misunderstanding of what the entropy itself is

young pecan
#

Going by which definition?

#

Again the thermodynamics one is the one people understand as entropy which isn’t really the whole picture.

#

It sorta ignores universal ‘budget’.

astral haven
#

it doesnt?

#

now sure people can get tripped up by the thermodynamics in an imperfect information system

mild dome
#

The universe is a closed system (at least from what we've seen), and we can see it running down

astral haven
#

then they confuse themselves about the sources of energy and presto entropy reversal

mild dome
#

One day even blackholes will fart out their last energy

young pecan
#

From what we can see in 3 spacial dimensions? Yes.

#

But we know we have more than 3 spacial dimensions and then quantum bullshit comes in and causes problems.

astral haven
mild dome
#

You need to work with what you can find, and sofar we have not found a source of energy outside the universe

#

Let alone an outside source of infinite energy

young pecan
#

We haven’t even found an edge to the universe, start there before talking outside of it.

mild dome
#

We can't see an edge because light isn't fast enough

young pecan
#

As far as we know it stops at the planck length and time but that’s only as far as we can math it.

mild dome
#

There likely isn't even an edge

astral haven
young pecan
#

Right and that’s why entropy is unsolved.

astral haven
#

its as solved as orbital mechanics

mild dome
#

I will repeat carmon, this is a god of the gaps argument

astral haven
#

and the amount of unsolved it is is less than the chance of me being inside the sun within 20 years

young pecan
#

Because you can force particles into existence that appear from nothing and don’t take energy from anything we can detect. We literally just don’t have an end answer. Insofar as anyone can tell entropy is perfect when applied to the universe assuming it’s a closed system but that’s really not at all confirmed. Only guessed with math that breaks down once we try going too far.

#

That’s not grounds to call anything confirmed.

astral haven
#

uuuuuh citation needed big time

mild dome
#

He's talking virtual particles

#

These immediately annihilate, producing no net energy
