I dont see them having a good way to make profit

Good rule of thumb is if you want to own an IPO stock, buy it at 50% off it's high after listing

Kek yeah, it usually dips a bit after being listed

gib 540hz oled

540hz normal layout with BFI or similar oled on ultrawide I beg

Also Xilinx acquisition will be really big for their growth

I kinda wana try stacked 32:9s

gusty kiln

Effectively 4 monitors

cursive summit
gusty kiln
#

Yeah

cursive summit
astral haven
#

except significantly higher resolution

cursive summit
#

A bit of a weird product but eh

gusty kiln
#

A lot of the newer 32:9 are 240hz also

#

240 is the bare minimum now for main monitor

final flame
#

I hate how many monitors release and they just are too large for the amount of pixel density they have
for the average distance on a desk you'd be viewing from

cursive summit
#

165 is just fine

gusty kiln

For pleb eyes

ark

gusty kiln

No one buys it though

final flame

all the 1440p ultrawides

astral haven
#

the pixels are huge on that monstrosity

final flame
#

specifically the 32:9 1440p ultrawides

astral haven
#

and the 1440p ultrawides are often about the same pixel density as 1080p24 inch

#

yes

final flame
#

essenstially every corsair monitor sku

astral haven
#

you arent supposed to consider it like one monitor that you want to fully fit in your (acquity) fov

gusty kiln
#

32:9 ultra wide are the same as 1440p27

astral haven
#

^

gusty kiln
#

The corsair 45 inch one is dumb though

astral haven
#

its just 2 monitors extremely well stapled together

final flame
#

the issue with that is even 1440p 27 is kinda not that dense
27 inch 4k is ideal

astral haven
#

yes?

#

but its more convenient than buying many monitors

final flame
#

the proper viewing distance for a 1440p 27inch is 2 feet

gusty kiln
#

Also i want a kvm on all my monitors now

astral haven
#

🤷 2 feet is a little close for a standard desk

#

1 meter is the standard

final flame
#

my monitor is all the way back on my desk and I only reach 2 feet when I lean back in my chair

astral haven
#

what

#

arms length is 1m for the average adult

final flame
#

my desk depth is 30 inches deep

astral haven
#

yes so put your monitor at the back of the desk?

final flame
#

already is

astral haven
#

and sit up straight insead of slouching forward?

final flame
#

if I wanted to put my monitor further I'd need a wall mount

astral haven
#

oh also be aware that the more tv sized monitors have slimmer mounts

#

if your monitor raises and lowers, its moving your monitor more forward than the arc would sit

#

now the arc also has a super deep stand, but the monitor is mounted very close to the back

final flame
#

my issue with the arc is it's a bit too big for it's resolution as a monitor
you can get away with 4k 48" at 3ft which is a good distance to be away from it
but at 55 you need to have a far deeper desk, which the curve on the arc doesn't really allow

astral haven
#

you are curving it the wrong way

#

it was designed to be curved this way

final flame
#

lol

#

fair, definitly would be more useful that way

astral haven
#

if you curve it the other way it pushes further out from the desk, and then you need it to be mounted lower

#

but this way you can get a normal monitor experience+ extra

#

also this

#

lol

final flame
#

this is what makes me mad

#

45" at 1440p

astral haven
#

🤷 some people actually just have poor vision

#

and some people are rich enough to have enough space in their room to have a very deep desk

final flame
#

the image on their website is as blurry as this monitor is

astral haven
#

also keep in mind tho you gotta compensate for the extra width

#

thats only slightly less dense than a 1440p 32 incher

#

🤔 are you sure about there not being any issues?

astral haven
#

well hindsight is 2020

fickle ore
#

yea

astral haven
#

and who were you to know that meta would be leading the Open source AI charge

#

jumping from the least productive bandwagon to the most productive one

#

i was playing around with compressed llama 2 models yesterday and daaaaaamn are they awesome

fickle ore
#

Also sold my mini NVDA pos. at like 300 $ a while back when their TTM P/E was like 200. Seemed too risky but who could've guessed this. Not me 😄

astral haven
#

yup
otherwise their pe ratio would have been 300+

fickle ore
#

It's still crazy high I think but if they keep growing like this that's fine I guess. Though it's hard to grow 88 % yoy or qoq.

astral haven
#

but being the solitary company capable of delivering on the next hype cycle of tech 3 times in a row is insanity

fickle ore
#

yea lol

astral haven
#

gaming then crypto then AI

fickle ore
#

lucky or not? thats the question

astral haven
#

we shall see next time

#

if ofc we survive ai

ashen spindle
#

Before we need to survive ai ai needs to survive capitalism

astral haven
#

lol dont think thats gonna be a problem

ashen spindle
#

Chatgpt is amazing but what’s the revenue model to make profit

astral haven
#

chatgpt is whatever per month
hiring an intern is a heck of alot more than that

fickle ore
#

Something weird like the internet, they couldnt believe internet could make money at first!

astral haven
#

well thats a pretty bad example lol, there was a huge bust

fickle ore
#

xD

astral haven
#

as long as outfitting your team with chatgpt subscriptions outperforms hiring an extra intern, it will be hella profitable

fickle ore
#

If I ever get tasked to feed AI at my job they can go to hell

#

gonna sabotage so hard

astral haven
#

the problem is the current ai just learns by looking at outputs...

#

so if your work has deliverables already, and a history of them, you are screwed

#

at least eventually

#

you can buy 130 chatgpt subscriptions for the price of a single minimum wage entry level software dev

fickle ore
astral haven
#

you dont replace all the people

#

you just replace the lowest performing ones :/

#

thats how it always is

ashen spindle
#

there is also a current issue with copyright etc.

astral haven
#

thats not a problem for organizations with code

ashen spindle
#

well...

#

depends on the country

astral haven
#

use a lora with purely your own code and you are good to go

fickle ore
#

Tbh I wouldn't mind a 2k€/month welfare check either =P. So keep the AI coming bois.

astral haven
#

and about 90% of the boring part of my job can be automated by AI

#

the interesting part only probably 20% can get automated with pure software tools

ashen spindle
#

even just trained on own data isnt a clear case, there was a talk at devcom from a lawyer at devcom yesterday that a coworker went to and summarized but need to look at details next week

astral haven
#

the more useful part for coders however is searching for errors

#

if you could get an ai good enough to always warn you about bugs, that would easily displace about half of the software dev industry

#

(current)

ashen spindle
#

Ehh

#

Maybe

#

But that won’t replace people so cost comes back to topic

astral haven
#

now if you couldnt trust it to always warn you it wouldnt be helpful

astral haven
#

the printing press didnt "replace" the scribes

mild dome
#

One question you do get is will half the developers really be out of a job, or will they be utilised in other niches?

Eitger way I imagine companies will use AI as an excuse to reduce wages

astral haven
#

it just made the people who used them 100x more productive

astral haven
fickle ore
fickle ore
#

Can't have only 10% of the population working and rest on welfare

astral haven
#

as long as productivity (i mean real goods productivity) outstrips the rate at which jobs are replaced you are all good

astral haven
#

technically you just need 10x but thats not practical

fickle ore
astral haven
#

remember 100% of humans used to be used for food production and preparation

#

people will find stuff to do

#

now what are the chances that real productivity increases faster than people are displaced from jobs? low

#

but it can possibly be a good result if we try

astral haven
solemn remnant
#

capitalism has ruined the world

astral haven
#

capitalism has ruined the world the least out of the options we are aware of

#

capitalism got started around here

solemn remnant
#

ban tradable shares, distribute wealth, give every newborn a personal capital account or a trust which gets topped with universal income until they come of age, no equities, give workers freedom to move between companies freely, tax only corporate revenues

#

capitalism started when east india company was divided

astral haven
#

thats not capitalism

solemn remnant
#

megacorporate shit capitalism which gives companies all the power was cemented in 1929 and 2008

astral haven
#

no it was cemented in the 16th century
it just took a while for humans to figure out how to optimize it past the point of being beneficial for humanity as a whole

solemn remnant
#

that's kind of the timeline, but the no morals only profit thinking really started with EIC

astral haven
#

🤷 thats very much not what it looks like in history

#

more people are suffering now by a factor of 10
but we have a factor of a million times more people

solemn remnant
#

yes

astral haven
#

there are problems, but we are using the best framework we have as of yet discovered

solemn remnant
#

just follow my above framework, also give everyone psychedelics

#

or just abolish work altogether, don't we have enough capital already for everybody

#

we need love, not labor

astral haven
#

shares are a key portion of how money flows in capitalism, so thats out
distribute wealth is the whole crux of the issue, its not a solution its a description of the problem
equity is shares
worker freedom is also a description of the problem not a solution, theoretically they have freedom
and define corporate revenue, there are plenty of companies that have tiny revenues and outsized impact, or companies that are tiny but technically have a ton of revenue thanks to providing services to many many people

solemn remnant
#

maybe if shares are suddenly votes which you can't buy or sell, everybody in the company has one and then they decide about everything from distribution of profits to what to do next together. make everything smaller, abolish mega-corporations and banks

astral haven
#

no the monetary part is entirely nescessary

solemn remnant
#

would be cool if we found a way where everybody was working for the common good, and not for the 1%

#

of course all of this is not realistic and I'm not serious, we're fucked unless some kind of a world-wide revolution happens

astral haven
#

🤷 as long as production goes up faster than inequality, its still an improvement

pale sigil
#

I miss having a static IP address

mild dome
#

Fun fact: megacorp head honchos hate capitalism, they wish to eliminate it by destroying competition.

Hence why capitalism tends to kill itself if not properly managed.

Ensuring that the worker has the power ensures good capitalism. Which is why megacorps hate unions

I would like to see you attempt to break a nokia 3310 in your regular use

astral haven
#

do you ever replace a phone before it has the chance to get broken tho?

crisp granite
astral haven
#

well then you are guaranteed to break your phone

#

some folks just upgrade phones when they can

steep creek
#

i just have a rugged case and screen protector on mine. case looks worn down but phone is flawless lol

astral haven
#

i have just a regular case, and a quick wipe makes it look flawless

crisp granite

yah that works too. just the rugged gives me more assurance when im outside and such

What does that entail I wonder

Sony WH wired?

astral haven

sounds like you are unaware of the mdr-z1r and ier-z1r

final flame
#

it's "sony interactive entertainment", not the sony division known for audio

cursive summit
#

You are right

#

Wtf does SIE want from Audeze

final flame
#

probably has something to do with the maxwell

cursive summit
#

Yeah they'll prolly be hard-pushing now for gamer branded headphones

#

I hope there's still room for hi-fi

final flame
#

they better not mess with anything else, Audeze's quality has been good since they are mostly hand made in california

grim pasture
#

Audeze have some noisecancerling tech dont they

#

and the planar magnective drivers

astral haven
#

that would have been sony electronics

final flame
#

"noise cancelling tech" that's a general blanket term
all noise cancelling headphones rely on the same underlying technique to remove sound

astral haven
#

actually its probably for the DSP

#

audeze is known for making awful hardware with excellent dsp

final flame
#

eh not really

astral haven
#

am i confusing them with another company?

final flame
#

audeze doesn't even use dsp, they physically are unable to for their hifi headphones

grim pasture
#

maybe this tech

final flame
#

not really, audeze is known for their planars but there are other companies making competent planars

#

Hifiman for example

grim pasture
#

thats how hyperx did it

astral haven
#

that part would be more up sony electronics aisle

grim pasture
#

they using audze drivers

astral haven
#

hyperx uses takstar drivers

#

and no dsp

#

since when did they start using audeze drivers?

final flame
final flame
#

hyperX didn't do anything, looks like they just made a deal with HyperX to include their drivers

astral haven
#

yea but thats a rebrand of an audeze product not a new product

I was responding to this..

So maybe Audeze will stay good as well

astral haven
#

bose still has the crown, just they dont put it in their consumer products

grim pasture
final flame
#

and never will be

astral haven
#

audeze has some special sauce, but its mostly dsp and tuning, and others have done tuning just fine

grim pasture
#

I was still only responding to what @prisma crag wrote about the patents

final flame
#

There have been many audio companies that do planar drivers
Hifiman, 7hz, Moondrop, Meze, just to name a few

astral haven
cursive summit
#

They prolly source them from the factories

#

Very few audio companies actually make the drivers

astral haven
#

takstar manufacturers planar drivers

cursive summit
#

Most of them are just sourced generic ones and tuned up

astral haven
#

and audeze used some (takstar units) in the distant past

final flame
#

audeze afaik doesn't make their drivers in house at their california location
they source them from whatever factory they have ties to

astral haven
#

are those even the official aviation units?
the ones ive seen are usually larger and sturdier looking

#

tho i suppose thats a small plane not a jet liner

#

hunh

#

yea i dont see them advertising a higher end unit

#

interesting

final flame
astral haven

yea but the units i remember didnt have bluetooth at all
definetly were old units tho

"Both devices use "custom-designed planar magnetic drivers", which we won't pretend to understand but appears to be a Good Thing. Apparently, the Pulse Explore earbuds will be one of the first sets to utilise this tech."

astral haven
#

Sure but wireless is nice

grim pasture
#

maybe they add the codec to maxwell xD

#

unless there is a hardware limitation

final flame

you can't add hardware functionality after the fact

#

you *may be able to depending on how the decoding is but that's unlikely as it seems this is only for 2.4ghz connections

not over bluetooth

astral haven

How are we to know they aren't using the same codec under the hood?
Unless Maxwell dongle is just Bluetooth?

I just can't imagine having to plug in one more thing into the extension power cables

Ngl Frank, you have lied plenty before, not sure if I should trust you

#

But eh I haven't looked into the topic much and Quintosh seems to agree that AMD isn't forcing anyone into exclusivity, so fair enough

crimson wigeon
#

Tbh kinda surprised the FSR3 announcements have nothing to say about Starfield

cursive summit
#

Did they give us any dates on 7800XT reviews?

#

Watched a GN breakdown on slideshow specs but didn't hear anything on them getting cards

also "nothing stopping them" doesnt mean that amd isnt providing monetary or support incentives if they dont
they could to it, but it would have a downside for them without azor having to lie

#

not saying this is happening, but you cant trust it to not be happening

cursive summit
#

Same with 30 to 40 series tbf

#

Other than 4090, which is just a "maxi-card"

astral haven
#

keep in mind its a fused off china edition

#

they very well could have fused off features like nvidia did with the a800

ashen spindle
#

It’s also a bit weird of a conclusion saying it’s little evolution of a functioning vs a broken product

astral haven
#

the a800 on paper is an a100 but it has features and clock speeds cut down just enough to comply with the restrictions

cursive summit
#

Ah they are finally launching the all-in-one switch

#

September 6th

#

I guess they closely tied it to FSR3 to work better together

ashen spindle
#

Wonder what anti lag+ is

cursive summit
#

I hope it's more than just a switch and there's more to it

ashen spindle
#

Anti lag we know

hdr 🤷

cursive summit
#

What's even the hype on HDR10+?

astral haven
#

doesnt have licensing costs

#

its also able to enable itself apparently but i dont buy that

cursive summit
#

So, I understand the HDR10(+) vs Dolby Vision comparison in movies

#

Why would I need that in games?

astral haven
#

if theres an advantage in movies why wouldnt there be an advantage in games?

cursive summit
#

But they have nothing in common?

astral haven
#

what

#

i dont think you get it at all

cursive summit
#

What, will we HDR the cutscenes?

#

I mean, sure, why not

astral haven
#

no
the entire everything

#

bright objects will be bright and dim objects will be dim

#

torches. flames, flashlights, the sun

#

shadow detail

crimson wigeon
#

Imagine getting flashbanged in a game and it actually making you blind because SO BRIGHT

cursive summit
#

Ahh I got it completely wrong

#

HDR10 seems to be a colour spec of sorts

astral haven
cursive summit
#

Kinda like sRGB I am guessing?

astral haven
#

thats missing the point

cursive summit
#

I thought it was limited to motion picture like movies only

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah but with proper HDR there's a decent contrast ratio so it'll be that much more intense, no?

astral haven
#

actually thats not true

cursive summit
#

... right

#

But is this a panel tech or game tech or GPU tech?

astral haven
#

HDR started in movies

cursive summit
#

Where does the HDR10 spec lie

astral haven
#

its a method of storing data
