then explain all the re encoded music that's available on youtube that is also on youtube music
anything that's not uploaded by the actual record label is grabbed from a youtube video

thick elk
#

I like having lossless music, even if other formats are transparent sound quality wise, it allows the files to be converted without any loss at any time.

#

Doesn't apply to streaming though

halcyon moss
thick elk
#

flac

final flame
#

if I'm going to use a service I want the sound quality to be consistent at what they are marketing
that means no re encodes
If they market 256kbps aac I expect that

#

and that goes for any format

#

main flaw of having so much user uploaded content

fair gull
#

man u must listen to some weird outlier tracks if its not uploaded by the label/artist

thick elk
#

When I still converted the music on my phone I went for 160 opus which really doesn't have any audible differences to lossless for the most part.

final flame
halcyon moss
#

back in my htc g1 days i did that with ogg :p

fair gull
#

i just bought a 1tb s10+ to store all my flacs directly on the phone

thick elk
#

I have a microsd in my phone with exactly that

fair gull
#

well i didnt wanna rely on microsd in case of speed inconsistency

halcyon moss
#

playing ogg on that device.. was interesting. barely able to and draining the battery super fast

final flame
#

I have a 256gb micro sd aswell in my phone for flacs too

thick elk
#

especially on my phone I may not always have an active internet connection so having a local copy is great, especially when traveling.

final flame
#

back in my school days I was out in the boonies where I would be lucky to get even 10mbit

thick elk
halcyon moss
fair gull
#

in my school days there was no flac sharing or even storing at home

#

everyone just had shitty mp2s or wav converted from somewhere

halcyon moss
final flame
#

:)

fair gull
#

no one wanted to bring a walkman

#

at best they brought the just released moto razer v3i

thick elk
#

When traveling I mean vacations and stuff, besides that there were a few places on my daily commute (between naarden and weesp and between weesp and diemen) where internet cut out for a bit, but that got fixed a couple of years ago.

fair gull
#

but ya i also used flacs for my bus commute to work but ended up basically replacing that with a new job

halcyon moss
#

offlining music is a thing in most of these apps

thick elk
#

Of course, but it's an involved process, it's different from oh let's grab discography x for now.

#

It's also not the only reason for keeping a local library. Local library is just more resilient. I am quite sure the same music could be played in 30 years.
I can also more freely choose the player to play the music from.

Apparently using mpv as a deamon used 98mb of ram

#

It doesn't have windows open
I run it using keyboard command

ashen spindle
#

Did you run out of ram?

wheat plume
#

no xd

#

Steam Deck got 16GB of shared RAM

#

I have increased the VRAM to 4GB though

ashen spindle
#

What’s the significance of it using 100mb ?

wheat plume
#

I just didnt think it would use that much because there is no window open and its playing music

cursive summit

Is it true that mini-led displays are vastly oversaturated?

#

From what I'm seeing, peeps are saying they are a lot less colour accurate than OLED

#

Is miniled actually better than IPS or not?

thick elk
#

Mini led is a backlight so there is nothing preventing a miniled ips from existing

cursive summit
#

I wish I had the opportunity to see a miniled on display somewhere

#

I like saturated colours usually, I wonder how much vibrant it is than IPS

thick elk
#

Well an IPS screen with a mini led backlight will have better contrast than an edge lit IPS screen.

#

Really that's about it, it's a better backlight tech than having larger zones or having it lit from the edge

#

should not impact the color gamut much as far as I know.

#

I feel like the messaging goes back to the days people advertized LED tv's vs lcd, while really it was LCD either way, just with a LED instead of a CCFL backlight.

You cant copy/cut paste folders on MacOS??

astral haven

since when?

wheat plume

timestamped

astral haven

yea the menu doesnt include cut

wheat plume

or copy it seems

astral haven
#

if you want to cut and paste you need to drag the folder with the mouse

#

copy is there

wheat plume
#

wow

#

ok

astral haven
wheat plume
#

aha

#

this way to cut means you need to drag and drop or know keyboard shortcuts

astral haven
#

what i dont get is why you cant right click inside a folder and create a new document or anything else of use

wheat plume
#

and no one really knows shortcuts :/

astral haven
#

yea

#

actually does ctrl x work lemme check

wheat plume
#

Yeah it should, according to the menu bar items

#

it showed that shortcut

ashen spindle
#

I think people know shortcuts but if you try any os for the first time you wont know them

astral haven
#

dont think i can do it since im in a remote session :/

wheat plume
#

aah

#

Is there a way to get a MacOS ISO to try in a VM?

astral haven

legally, image a real mac

#

otherwise
🏴‍☠️

wheat plume
#

does Apple let you download the ISO from their site? like Microsoft does for Windows?

ashen spindle
#

lol

astral haven
#

apple has a network booting option built into the hidden partition on the mac

reef patrol
#

You don't download and install a MacOS. You boot into the recovery console, and then it takes over.

#

In the good old days it was even built into ROM.

astral haven
#

it autodownloads from apples servers on its own

wheat plume
#

o...

frozen ingot
#

apple only bundles their OS with computers afaik

#

don't think there's a way to buy mac os separately

astral haven
#

correct

#

you also arent legally allowed to run the macos installer on a non apple branded device

#

god damn it this mac keeps forgetting my resolution
why on earth doesnt it just remember to keep 1080p for this remote session that has always been and always will be 1080p

wheat plume
#

o.o

#

hek

astral haven
#

thats a disk image not an installer

wheat plume
#

yeah, can put that in VM and boot?

reef patrol
#

Also... ancient?

wheat plume
#

Yeah...those are ultra old versions

astral haven
#

theres instructions for making hackintoshes online forever

#

and good guy apple made the hardware secret key a plaintext lowercase english sentence

#

now you arent legally allowed to use it but they dont make it hard

halcyon moss
#

Keeping a hackintosh running takes effort, and it's a gateway to buying the actual thing

astral haven
#

yep
we us actual macs
just stuffed on a shelf and remoted into, but actual apple hardware regardless

#

upgraded with an aftermarket ssd, but still otherwise running great

#

this is the machine that feels smoother to use with apple configurator to me than our 2020 M1 Mac mini
its frankly embarassing that an ostensibly "NVME" drive feels less responsive than a sata drive

#

and especially it also has double the ram, and an alledgedly faster "8 core" processor

ashen spindle
#

but but apple said new storage needs to be soldered bc special sauce

#

so I think you must be lying

astral haven
#

yep definetly lying
especially considering this laptop also supports pcie ssds (proprietary form factor of course)

fair gull
astral haven
#

their on die ssd controller

thick elk
#

If only they at least upgraded the defaults to something more sensible for a modern system.

#

They use it for device encryption as well

#

Still it could work socketed, and they have had them in the past so really it's just cost.

fair gull
#

i mean mac studio is swapable ssds

astral haven
#

nope

#

the ssd controller is still on die

fair gull
#

and you can still swap the ssds

astral haven
#

the chips they swap are only the nand

#

and the nand doesnt have a built in controller

fair gull
#

yes but you can swap them

astral haven
#

but its not an ssd

#

and as such it has limitations to how you can swap it

fair gull
#

id say as its nand chips with address lines its an ssd

astral haven

thats called flash memory

sd and emmc are basically just SPI, and not a relatively complex state table

crude hatch
#

That mostly looks like resin printing which has a lot of detail so isn't a big challenge to make that stuff. The real challenge is making those models.

#

It's messy that's for sure but they are nice to have, especially as a compliment to an fdm printer

vagrant pagoda
#

AMD recently released a new graphics driver that boosts performance by double-digit percentages. This Radeon Software Adrenaline Edition update mostly focuses on “Forza Horizon 5” and “The Last of Us.” The performance uplift conferred, though, is not something you see with an everyday driver update. For example, Forza Horizon 5 is a whopping 67%...

crude hatch

They are typically not super crazy expensive from what I recall and isn't usually too much variance between models of them

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah

#

Wonder if it applies to xtx too

ashen spindle
#

doesnt matter

astral haven
#

look at the article for a half second?

ashen spindle

the 67% is in a case where it was slower than a 6800 before

#

so its just a bug fix

astral haven

the bug fix applies to xtx too it seems

hmm it also applies to the 6950xt

yeah but it only puts them where they already where in other games compared to nvidia

wheat plume

aahhh

I hate 12 hour time :')

#

it makes the clock look really top heavy

ashen spindle

so change it?

astral haven
#

thats why the seconds are disabled by default?

wheat plume
#

Nah, id keep the seconds

#

but 24 hour best xd

misty saffron
#

why would you want seconds

astral haven
#

^

crimson wigeon
#

Because

wheat plume
#

I used to have a phone that did not let me change to 24 hour time

#

it was so fucking annoying

misty saffron
#

so you’ve added seconds on pc to spite it?

wheat plume
#

I think it was my Windows phone

astral haven
#

the only reason ive made any attempt at 24hr is so that i can get an intuition for it

wheat plume
#

huh?

misty saffron
#

i use 12 hour on pc because i can’t give enough fucks to change it

astral haven
#

when i hear 8p i intuitively know approximately how far from now that is

#

when i hear 20:00 i have to perform the conversion mathematically

wheat plume
#

Microsoft stole the switch design from Google :')

astral haven
#

since when lol

#

these switches were in windows 8

wheat plume
#

those are not the 8 switches

frozen ingot
wheat plume
#

this is the 8 switch

frozen ingot
#

google totes stole them from apple then

wheat plume
frozen ingot
#

they do though

astral haven
#

its the same thing except rounded instead of square lol

misty saffron
#

if anything, the design of those toggles was apple’s thing from… a real while ago

wheat plume
#

The circle fill the whole side of the toggle in Apple's one

astral haven
#

these toggles were ostensibly stolen from actual physical switches

wheat plume
#

it doesnt use the accent color either

ashen spindle
#

rectangle in rectangle or both rounded is how any switch looks like

wheat plume
#

yeh but the subtle designs

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

not a switch but a checkbox then

frozen ingot
#

are you sure about that

astral haven
misty saffron
wheat plume
#

the only difference between Windows 11 toggles and the Android Material You toggle is the size of the circle and the fact Windows on its always black while Android uses a different shade of the accent color

misty saffron
#

pretty sure apple would be the origin

frozen ingot
ashen spindle
#

Either way there are like 5 options of how you can make a moveable toggle like that, it's not that unlikely some look the same without them ever having seen the other

astral haven
#

^

frozen ingot
#

I miss the skeumorphic ios

misty saffron
#

i don’t honestly, neumorphism is the best of both worlds

ashen spindle
#

design changes and how you would add a toggle in that design hapepns to look like the same as another, really not unlikely

wheat plume
#

my linux theme also uses a material you style toggle

astral haven
#

also gotta remember windows 11 has been around for quite a while

frozen ingot
ashen spindle
#

so linux stole it from microsoft smh

misty saffron
wheat plume
#

this is more like te Windows 11 one

#

yeh...the font is fucked, I know

misty saffron
#

we get it, linux is very consistent

wheat plume
#

Nah xd

ashen spindle
#

I mean if there are rectangle switches and a design changes to round corners you change toggles to be round, done, looks the same now

wheat plume
#

if you stick to GTK apps or QT apps only

#

it is consistent

#

but mixing them makes it not consistent

astral haven
#

this is windows 10 lol

wheat plume
#

tiny circle

astral haven
#

its the same size as on 11

wheat plume
#

nope

misty saffron
#

is it though?

#

pretty sure they changed a lot with fluent design

wheat plume
#

The new Mica theme on 11 is much nicer than Fluent IMO

ashen spindle
#

bigger circle bc bigger box but looks the same relatively

wheat plume
#

being said, I prefer the blur sidebar of Fluent

wheat plume
misty saffron
#

yeah the pill is shorter

ashen spindle
#

because the entire switch is bigger

#

if you make the entire thing big ofc the circle gets bigger

Android is getting a new "Unknown tracker alerts" feature.

The new "Unknown Tracker Alerts" feature announced at I/O 2023 will be coming to devices running Android 6.0 and later starting this month. The feature allows you to receive notifications when someone else's Bluetooth tracker is travelling with you.

Tapping on the notification will help you learn more about the tracker, how to disable it and view a map with the history of the tracker moving with you. You can also tap the "Play Sound" button and the tracker will emit a sound to help you locate it without the tracker owner's knowledge.

If you bring the device to the back of your phone, some Bluetooth trackers can tell you their serial number or additional info about the device owner, such as the last four digits of their phone number.

Also you can manually scan for trackers around you.

#

IDK if this includes Apple Airtags

#

Google is delaying the launch of its Find My Device network and trackers because of Apple.

Along with the announcement of Unknown Tracker Alerts (which currently only works with AirTag), Google said it will not launch the Find My Device (FMD) network "until Apple has implemented protections for iOS."

Also, Google has confirmed to 9to5Google that alerts for unwanted use of AirTag trackers are currently based on a custom implementation that differs from the upcoming specification. Android is implementing these alerts now to allay user fears, as Apple's tracker is quite widely available.

Google is working with other tracker manufacturers (Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security and Pebblebee) to expand interoperability as part of a joint industry FMD specification.

The FMD network was originally scheduled to launch during the summer, but is now expected to launch before the end of 2023.

Amazon treats its warehouse workers like machines.
They get like 1 piss break every four hours, and even then its like 5 minutes. Since it takes 10 minutes to travel from your assigned workstation in the warehouse to the bathroom the only option is plastic bottles

halcyon willow
#

Every Amazon driver that I've seen come to my house look like they have PTSD

#

Like they've seen some shit

#

always immediately take a picture and get back in the car

#

How exactly is that a bad thing?\

#

Don't be like that lol, just tell me

mild dome
#

Also to add: Amazon has the cheapest prices, and yet at the same time the fastest shipping, but somehow its owner is one of the richest men alive today. This means in Amazon is cutting corners somewhere, and those corners are the workforce

As I mentioned before they got warehouse workers practically jogging around collecting stuff so they don't have to hire additional workers to get it done on time. They use contractors who are often underpaid to deliver the items, and if they don't deliver on time they get penalised quite badly

#

So on one side you got Amazon practically monopolising a logistics industry
And on the other you got them abusing the heck out of their workers who make that industry

#

Also Amazon solution to processing any returns: Destruction
This includes unopened Macbooks, because its apparently cheaper to destroy these goods then to have a team sorting it

#

Like bros could donate this shite

until you actually have the traffic they do

raw zephyr

you can host it on cloudflare for free.

#

if it's a static site

fair gull
#

firsat only one node, thats static and doesnt even talk about speed

#

ok but you dont get all of that nor do i imagine its per location

#

prob just in total for all thewir locations

#

also youll have a lot more traffic than 1tb

#

video hosts try to use the least amount of bitrate for a video for a reason

#

if its a tiny hobbyist blog id just host a webserver as those usually come with a few tb of traffic a month or some fair use traffic aka dont try to congest it for less than 15bucks a month

#

and many of them offer 500-1000gb of ssd storage

#

a tiny blog wouldnt use a cdn

#

they dont use those because of the cdn

raw zephyr
#

indeed, i didn't read the previous messages, but it's definitely suitable for a static website

fair gull
#

cloudflare is usually used as many also use it for dns and ddos protection

#

netlify prob just has good pricing and github is free

raw zephyr
#

i use cloudflare for the dns, i will mess around with cloudflare tunnels when i finally build my nas

fair gull
#

ah ya netlify has a free tier thats why

#

so while a cdn is sort of included its not why they choose those platforms

#

i think you got the whole case upside down. the users dont choose to host on a cdn... cloudflare, netlify and github just are setup to use CDNs regardless of what the user wants

#

i think most of them arent trying to avoid managing a server or something but literally just dont wanna pay when theres a free solution unless the paid option has something they absolutely need

#

and most of the stuff i have seen on there is usually just static pages

#

of guides or something
