# clear aurora i cant pick between fedora and nobara

Looking at Nobara, it seems like a modified Fedora with some gaming related things preinstalled and some tweaks.
It could be fine to try out but, documentation may not always match with vanilla Fedora so you may have some more trouble finding the issue.
There is also a chance the distro being quite new just stops existing after a while, which is fine if you are just trying stuff out but not to settle on.
That being said for a first time you probably won't stick to anything anyway.

End of the day you can get mostly the same experience on any reasonable distro.
Differences mainly boil down to what the defaults are.
How up-to-date is the distro, more up-to-date also means you probably need to update more often, things change more often.
How wel documented your distro is.

End of the day it's a matter of trying things out, reading / trying to do things yourself and figuring out what works for you.

Personally I run Arch on my desktop, and Debian on servers.
I settled there quite a few years ago and have seen little reason to move.
Still in general I would not recommend vanilla arch, while you could read the docs you probably don't know what you like yet.
This makes picking the right things harder.

Anyway good luck on your journey

Probably an ease of asembly thing, you don't have to add another ribbon cable + it makes it easy to drop in a different motherboard based on the SKU.
If it works, it's not stupid, but the mechanism could definitely use some refinement.

And even then I bet only 1 in 100, if they sell that much, would actually wear them long term

#

VR didn't get mass adoptions for very good reasons, I don't see why this would get any

ashen spindle
#

this wont get mass adoption because it's not made for it

#

this is basically a public test/QA/dev device and mass adoption should follow with later revisions/versions

cursive summit
#

It's not made for it = a million expected sales?

ashen spindle
#

a million devices is no mass adoption

#

do you know how many quests are sold lol

cursive summit
#

A million devices sold in Apple's eyes is nothing but considering the price they want for it, do they even sell a million of their top end macs?

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

cost does not matter when you said mass adoption

#

mass adoption does not lower the number when it gets more expensive

cursive summit
#

So Apple is going to go the Meta route of selling underpriced goggles for 800$ or so just for mass adoption and make a major loss?

#

You can only get mass adoption when your price is approachable for most

ashen spindle
#

???

cursive summit
#

What are you question marking for

ashen spindle
#

this device is not for mass market adoption

#

so follow up are going to aim for that gradually

#

as for price, some parts will come down, for others, look at what people pay for an iphone

#

they dont need to hit quest prices

cursive summit
#

A million units sold sure does sound like they are expecting good sales

#

1 in 300 Americans or 1 in 500 Europeans buying one is fairly wide adoption

#

Though yes, mostly it's the R&D that matters here

#

Though Apple's marketing mill sure is trying to blow the whole thing up

ashen spindle
#

yes and its total numbers not release sales numbers

#

so them originally wanting a million is not like they expect a million and then another million the next quarter

#

also fun to see how many places call it apple reducing expected sales when the original numbers came from apple not being able to make that many

fair gull
vagrant pagoda
#

Decrypt? Never seen business or residential fiber with encryption

fair gull

well depends on how the fibre works

#

this was a passive network

#

so all endpoints get all packets

vagrant pagoda
#

Oh never used anything that shitty lol

fair gull
#

it works fine

#

its just a different style of doing fibre

vagrant pagoda
#

Both of mine are multiple gig

fair gull
#

usually cheaper as theres no active electronics on the road sides

vagrant pagoda
#

So passive wouldn't do them much good

fair gull
#

these also reached 10gig

vagrant pagoda
#

How would you put multiple 10g on a single wavelength?

fair gull
#

dont know but i know it worked

#

we hooked up a few companies and it worked fine

vagrant pagoda
#

Also no electronics on the roadside for mine, my length from my switch to DC is miles

fair gull
#

thats not sustainable

#

also dont believe that tbh

vagrant pagoda
#

It's dedicated 5g and 3g links

#

So they don't oversell on the link to me

#

So it's direct

fair gull
#

i highly doubt its direct

#

prob just a separate rack in a small network hut

#

cause thats how it usually is set up

#

idk if america maybe just does it entirely different

vagrant pagoda
#

Nah it's just multimode to DC from the local node

fair gull
#

but its completely unsustainable to run cables for each dedicated connection to a dc

vagrant pagoda
#

You can have 100s of links on one fiber though

fair gull
#

not if it goes from you to the dc

#

thats 1 link

vagrant pagoda
#

You can mix in and out wavelengths

fair gull
#

that doesnt matter though

#

you still only connect 1 endpoint to 1 output in the dc

#

thats highly inefficient

vagrant pagoda
#

You have say 30-50 local users

#

You mix that into a single link to the dc

#

Then split it

fair gull
#

ok so exactly what i said

#

active electronics

vagrant pagoda
#

No

fair gull
#

on the roadside

#

yes

vagrant pagoda
#

All optical passives

fair gull
#

so its passive

vagrant pagoda
#

Each end user only gets a single wavelength

fair gull
#

yes

vagrant pagoda
#

Well 2 wave links because it's duplex

#

But you can't see anyone else's data

fair gull
#

if its passive you can

vagrant pagoda
#

No

fair gull
#

well yes

vagrant pagoda
#

The beam split off the other wavelengths

#

So you only see yours

fair gull
#

thats one expensive way to do passive networks i guess

vagrant pagoda
#

How

#

Beam splitters aren't that much

fair gull
#

because now you need prisms that filter wavelengths instead of purely split the beam

#

way cheaper to just split it and send all wavelengths to all attached ONTs

#

and then encrypt packets per customer

vagrant pagoda
#

But I know if I unplug the module from their switch and put into mine. With no info it will get ips

#

It's just a normal splitter with filter/gates inside

fair gull
#

i highly doubt its a passive network ngl

vagrant pagoda
#

Never seen inside

fair gull
#

what you describe would be inbetween the normal pon and aon topology

#

id love to learn more though so if you figure out what the exact topology is please let me know

#

Didn't even know that sysinternals tool was even a thing

astral haven
#

most isps run singlemode to the neighborhood just like with cable
then they run massive numbers of fiber out of the active boxes, one to each customer

fair gull
#

thats not pon then is it

astral haven
#

yea because pons are dog slow and dumb as few people use them as possible
but they can do thousands if you really dont care about speed

#

just need to blow it to the apartments and drill for fibre

astral haven
fair gull
#

ok but no ones doing that in germany

#

also

ashen spindle
#

it is better as far as regulation forced it to be better, withing those regulations we have had issues with getting fibre pushed as the current gen tech

fair gull
#

theres a slight issue with how our laws work as they mandate that everyone should have access to a telephone line which now means internet aswell... this basically forces anyone who builts fibre to also rent it out to other companies after a certain time period to recoup investment

#

everyones waiting for someone else to build new stuff

#

lol

reef patrol
fair gull
#

although now the point was reached where small orgs started building fibre with crowdfunding basically

astral haven
#

wow im surprised germany is so far behind the us

#

we had that 10-15 years back, and about 5 years ago the big players started gobbling up those orgs

ashen spindle
#

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDSL#Vectoring the technology that essentially cucked us out of fibre being much more used

Very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) and very high-speed digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) are digital subscriber line (DSL) technologies providing data transmission faster than the earlier standards of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) G.992.1, G.992.3 (ADSL2) and G.992.5 (ADSL2+).
VDSL offers speeds of up to 52 Mbit/s downstr...

fair gull
#

and all because they didnt wanna built out fibre just for others to rent it from them

#

and now they have to anyway

astral haven
#

i assume they dont want to do that because there are price controls?

ashen spindle
#

I don’t remember the exact details because I don’t want to accept it being real that we are so shit when it comes to internet xD

pale sigil
#

Proper fiber is finally being pushed in the UK via government grants here, originally it was mainly only in cities.

#

There was only one company that could provide good speeds who used docsis

#

Shit upload though

sharp badger
fair gull
#

i paid 40bucks a month for gigabit coax at vodafone and t-online wanted more than that for 100mbit vdsl

astral haven
#

i mean price controls for renting out the fiber?

fair gull
#

oh no thats controlled by the company renting out as far as i know

#

most of the time its 5-6eur per customer per month

astral haven
#

then why do they care?
they make as much money as they want?

fair gull
#

because no one would get their contracts if everyone else offers 1gbit fibre for 25bucks

astral haven
#

so increase the price to rent the fiber out?

fair gull
#

1gbit fibre at telekom is 80eur a month

mild dome
#

We almost had fibre installed Australia wide here, but then our lefty government got replaced by the righty government and the righty government didn't want foxtel to face real competition so they downgraded it to "Fibre to the Node"

fair gull
#

btw 1gbit down 200mbit up

astral haven
#

blame it on chaina

pale sigil
#

If it's 200 up that sounds like coaxial to the house

#

Wait no ignore me

#

I learned recently the hard way that these dick head companies limit fiber uploads.

#

It's bullshit

#

ATM I get 500/500 but as soon as I leave the trial they'll cap my upload

astral haven
#

convenient

#

then theres me who is relying on my work internet to back my phone up because my upload at home is practically 10m on 300 down

#

speaking of i found a really cool app that lets me upload all of my filesystem to a google shared drive
and I can even make it sync 2 ways if i want
its called autosync

potent ridge
#

Hi

astral haven

hello

astral haven

stateside theres an affordable network option where its 1 gig symmetrical for $50
same $70 for unpoor folks

#

$20 in this case but ye

#

its good stuff

halcyon moss
#

It is, providers do not like it. But in nl providers must allow it

#

In the end... Most of the time you put the modem in bridge mode

#

Or let it be put it that mode..

analog sinew
#

that's why i use snipping tool more these days

pale sigil
#

That is annoying

#

Sharex is a pita with Minecraft too

cursive summit
#

Unless you use screenshot tools

#

You can use snipping tool but I find that a bit slow and meh

#

Yeah and that's slow and unwieldy

astral haven
#

if you have 5 it takes a screenshot of all 5 lol

astral haven
cursive summit
#

Completely missed the point

#

winkey shift S is a really damn unwieldy keybind

astral haven
#

so press the single button in windows settings to apply that to the printscreen button?

#

i find winshifts to be faster than printscreen tho since I dont have to move my hand

coarse cloak
#

idk why but any hotkeys that uses winkey are overcomplicated for me, and i use powertools every now and then

cursive summit
#

Anyways I just prefer Lightshot since that also comes with basic editing

astral haven
#

what

cursive summit
#

Which is why I find it really damn useful

#

Lightshot to me is snippy, intuitive and easy to use

ashen spindle
#

well you dont want your shortcuts be something the average idiot hits constanyl by accident and it also makes sense to have winkey+ others as macro button for windows fuctions

cursive summit
#

None of the in-built Windows ones come close

astral haven
coarse cloak
#

the time it takes for me to remember a hotkey that uses winkey is half the time i need to press prntscrn
skill issue from me tbh

cursive summit
#

Win shift S does not allow for quick editing

astral haven
#

since when?

cursive summit
#

Since now?

coarse cloak
#

winkey ctrl is fine for me
winkey shift is weird

cursive summit
astral haven
cursive summit
#

None of these are for drawing tools

astral haven
#

because you havent taken the picture yet

cursive summit
#

Lol so I have to then click on a notification, do the editing there and only then I have my ready image?

#

When lightshot is an all-in-one fast package?

astral haven
#

the notification allows you to take the screenshot in a single keypress, and edit it later on your own time

cursive summit
#

That's the whole problem

#

Edit it later

#

I either want to edit it, or not

#

Why is it a 2 step process?

ashen spindle
#

do you edit every single screenshot you take?

cursive summit
#

No, but I have the option right there to do it right after I took a screen snip

astral haven
#

how many keypresses is it for lightshot from nothing to image in clipboard

cursive summit
#

2

#

Printscreen -> save

astral haven
#

including drawing?

cursive summit
#

Well with drawing it'd be 3

astral haven
#

and only for a small portion of the screen?

cursive summit
#

Any portion

astral haven
#

how do you select in 2 presses?

cursive summit
#

Printscreen -> select area with mouse -> save?

astral haven
#

thats 3

cursive summit
#

Not counting mouse

astral haven
#

yes counting mouse lmao

#

otherwise its 1 for anything you do with windows snipping lmao

cursive summit
#

If I just want a general snip, shift + printscreen takes a fullscreen one without entering the selection GUI

#

Click save or ctrl+s

#

If it did autosnip you wouldn't be able to edit it on the spot

astral haven
#

so thats the difference

cursive summit
#

Yeah and it's still far more user friendly that whatever winkey shift S is

astral haven
#

instead of requiring an extra keypress every time, its a button that you only need to press if you need to edit

#

its always 1 keypress to get an image onto your clipboard

rough osprey
#

isnt the Windows tool just Printscreen?

astral haven
#

optionally

cursive summit
#

2, considering you still have to select a portion of your screen, Carmonben

astral haven
#

thats only if you told it to

cursive summit
#

Not to mention lightshot has additional functionality of 1) Uploading image to the web 2) Upload the snip to google image search

astral haven
#

ok there you go

cursive summit
#

Or printing, for some reason

astral haven
#

finally new features that are not just "being less convenient"

cursive summit
#

They are still more convenient dogekek

coarse cloak
#

ShareX > lightshot
unless you need to choose what to do with the screenshot all the time

cursive summit
#

Ah yeah I also have that off

astral haven
#

šŸ¤”

cursive summit
#

I completely forgot it actually does do that out of the box for some reason

astral haven
#

biggest advantage tho is you dont have a window to deal with once you have taken the screenshot

#

its always 1 button and 1 click to have an image of whatever you want ready to go
aaaaand it doesnt require any extra software, without any uploading by default, tho it would be nice to have an option that isnt relying on the online clipboard
tho it does have support for nearby share if you want to send it direct to your phone

#

because it immedately appears in the clipboard, you get both the unedited and the edited versions of the screenshot saved too

#

well at least until you restart your computer

cursive summit
#

Lightshot does also have functionality to save as file on the getgo right after snip

#

From what I'm seeing win shift S only saves into clipboard

#

That's again more presses just to save as image on desktop or wherever

#

Well, whatever, if that is what you feel productive with, that's fine, I just find that really unwieldy

astral haven
#

its 2 buttons if you forget about mouse

#

4 if you dont

#

yes and/or yes

#

windows 11 fixes that

#

1 month of pain now is better than 2 years of suffering and 1 month of pain later imo

cursive summit
#

Use debloated win11

#

Then you don't have to deal with the terrible features

#

Cause yes, it does actually suck dogekek

#

Man they just have to change features to claim they are doing something new

analog sinew
#

wtf

#

who comes up with that shit

#

"lets umm take the place where we show icons and hide them"

cursive summit
#

I am still perplexed why they had the mindset that changing the right click context menu, I think it's called, was a good idea

#

Instead of right click -> properties, now you just have to bother with clicking another button and only then are the useful options showed

#

Like, why

astral haven
#

not sure what you mean by that?
you just drag them down like you used to

cursive summit
#

And some peeps just say "Oh just change that in the registry" or whatever, the fact is, why am I supposed to undo Microsoft's work to have a better functioning product?

#

What was the point of that change

astral haven
#

it was to get rid of virus like stuff that would show up there

analog sinew
astral haven
#

also btw you go straight to the complete right click menu by holding shift just like on macos

reef patrol
astral haven
#

which is real dumb but that is how it is

#

they probably arent gonna get rid of shift tho

#

its been a thing forever
i think since at least 8.1

#

our av provider's only way to scan a specific file is the legacy menu :/

#

but yea mcafee and kaspersky throwing 3 menu items into the menu each and many other programs doing the same ruined it for everyone

cursive summit
#

Microsoft to me has shown time and time again that even it comes to OS stuff, they have no clue what they are doing

#

Their technological stuff is good, but when it comes to QoL it's atrocious

astral haven
#

🤷 as if anyone else is doing any better

cursive summit
#

Windows 11 is just a downgrade over 10, and 10 seemed like a downgrade over 8/7

astral haven
#

the only os that is improving faster than windows is dex

cursive summit
#

After 10 becomes unsupported, I am ditching Windows for Linux or whatever else is available in 2025 or so

#

I am done with Windows being just ass

analog sinew
#

MuskOS

astral haven
#

lol

astral haven
cursive summit
#

That's where I started

cursive summit
#

Vanilla, which was a horrible experience

#

And a debloated one which was better by a country mile

#

But had issues with compatibility cause it removed too much bloat dogekek

#

I have experience with Linux so I will proceed with that once 10 expires

astral haven
#

linux is near windows 7 in terms of functionality and form
some people like that sure
but that was such an insanely long time ago in terms of ux that its really painful to use

#

again

#

its near the same level as dex

#

and dex is 3 years old and runs on phones

#

oh wait no its 5 years old
3 years old when my phone released

cursive summit
astral haven
#

thats tizen not dex

#

and tizen is ancient

cursive summit
#

Dex also has that though?

astral haven
#

you can cast desk to their screens, but thats just miracast

#

it runs on phones (or tablets)

#

its basically an android launcher that first released in 2019
but its already more useable for me than macos is...

cursive summit
#

Seems those smart displays from Samsung are just basically TVs

astral haven
#

macos fullscreen is still such an atrocity, and they dont even have support for window snapping

astral haven
cursive summit
#

Which is still better than Win11 dogekek

astral haven
#

???

#

look fam
windows has 10s of thousands of features, with hundreds of millions of options available
linux has thousands of features with millions of options available
macos has 100s of features with 100s of thousands of features available (and millions of features paywalled)
and tizen os has 10s of features with 100s of options available

cursive summit
#

Yeah sounds like I'd rather use dex over win11 anyways

fickle ore
#

i love windows 11

astral haven
#

dex is on the order of 100s of features however with 10s of millions of options available

#

the only real problem with dex is that android's audio handling is simply not robust enough
one of the missing features is the ability to chose a mic for example

#

like on what planet would I want to use my phones built in mic when i plugged in a usb mic???

empty wren
#

Give it some time, not that long ago external microphones became a feature in camera apps on android

astral haven
#

sure yea but its been 5 years, and 3 of pandemic...

#

if you cant video call properly?????

empty wren
#

If only more competition existed I guess since really the only other provider of a proper desktop mode is motorola

astral haven
#

and only samsung allows you to run native, tho they limit it to the tablets which is moderately unfortunate

empty wren
#

That does seem a bit odd considering how much smaller a phone screen is compared to a tablet

astral haven
#

well it makes sense, dex is optimized for larger screens

#

oh and thats not to mention the complete inability to run more than 1 monitor

#

and the extremely limited resolution support

empty wren
#

1080p max?

astral haven
#

better than macos where your processor melts if you use an unsupported resolution, but black bars are awfully annoying, and that only happens if your monitor supports one of the native resolutions

astral haven
empty wren
#

Oh I see now

#

Also when you mentioned native do you mean dex can run on the tablet screen with a mode key or something?

astral haven
#

correct
except its more when you launch dex you have the option of native rather than just wired or wireless external

empty wren
#

Wow cool now if only there were more applications

astral haven
#

the entire of the android app system works

#

the missing parts are os level features

empty wren
#

Well not all apps play nicely I imagine

astral haven
#

yea

empty wren
#

Like chrome or probably any browser works like desired minus extensions maybe Firefox could be used if extensions are necessary

astral haven
#

samsung browser supports extensions natively lol

empty wren
#

Well that works I guess lol

astral haven
#

yea its not great

#

regardless im far more happy just using a surface

empty wren
#

Surface is great but the keyboard material seems to fall apart

astral haven
#

i dont have a keyboard 🤷

#

astral haven
empty wren
#

astral haven
#

my backpack has a laptop sleeve, but its shared with a bunch of stuff

#

its very unsafe, but its still fine for now

empty wren
#

ah alright

astral haven
#

is it rumored what they are gonna announce?

#

sony has ceded action cams to gopro and the chinese clones :/

#

ooh interesting
rumor state aps-c, ibis, 4k120 fx30 sensor, ai autofocus

#
#

i want sony to just shoot for the moon with a slow motion camera and make a fullframe 960fps that crops to apsc with 2k fps and 1 inch (ish) 4k fps

#

Why tf does my mom's bridge cam from 2016 shoot 4x faster than my milc that cost twice as much from just last year...

even if not most mobos support it

#

like legit just fw update

#

put in new CPU

#

and you are golden for like at least 2 more years

cursive summit
#

Also Gigabyte has that nifty feature of self-updating the firmware

old marlin
#

at which point you might wanna consider picking up a new GPU

cursive summit
#

No need to preload the firmware and anything

#

It just downloads off the internet by itself

raw zephyr
#

my friend recently did that upgrade, 3600 -> 5800x3d, only the cpu nothing else

old marlin
#

would not trust that

cursive summit
#

I did use that, and it works well

#

And that was on AM3 platform

#

Or FM2

#

I do think they will announce it this year

old marlin
#

very much doubt it

cursive summit
#

So they are preparing for launch I imagine

old marlin
#

the switch still sells like hotcakes

cursive summit
#

It's so funny that OLED was not even really a big launch for them

#

yet it became so big

old marlin
#

only over twice the units of hte ps5

cursive summit
#

I forgot what the story was with the OLED, but it was not a mainline product

#

They did something else or something, scrapped that product and were like "we need to make up for the r&d or something", and launched whatever

#

From what I read they did not expect it to be a big hit

#

yet it's a pretty damn massive hit

#

Nintendo effect

raw zephyr
#

i bought the nintendo switch at launch, played 2 games, installed homebrew, never touched it again

cursive summit
old marlin
#

amazing

cursive summit
#

But I do hate how shit the console works

old marlin
#

I mean their catalogue is prob the best one of all current consoles

#

since they have unique titles

cursive summit
#

They are let down by the hardware

old marlin
#

and not just the next "third person press forward"-game

raw zephyr
#

the games are great, i personally don't play anything on it, but when little cousins come over they play on it all the time

old marlin
raw zephyr
#

i like how "casual" the switch is, you can hand the console to your grandma and she will be able to play

#

games like mario party and others

cursive summit
old marlin
#

also FFXVI got to enjoy the top spot in japan for an entire week

cursive summit
#

Design the game for "hard" mode, but allow journos to play on easy

#

Or old peeps and non-gamers

raw zephyr
#

that's not how the game was designed

old marlin
#

the game is designed around the combat

#

if you take that away it just becomes a boring open world

#

like botw

raw zephyr
#

elden ring is a sequel to the souls game, imagine how die-hard souls gamers would be angry, because you decided to give the game difficulties or make it easy

#

no casual is ever gonna play elden ring, it's not the main audience

old marlin
#

bruh

#

the durability is such a stupid system

#

I have the honest belief they tried to make botw as soulless as possible

ashen spindle
#

Not to mention total console amounts of each heh

#

Shows how big the switch really is

old marlin
#

300k sales in a week is huge

#

beats totk on first week

cursive summit
# old marlin 300k sales in a week is huge
Forbes

While Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are marred with technical problems and suffering from series-low critic and user review scores the games are…also absolute sales monsters, showing the series is stronger than it’s ever been before in terms of player interest.

#

Such a disgrace yet so much sold

old marlin
#

not just japan

#

we don't get global sales data

#

but japanese is transparent

ashen spindle
#

Yeah compared to that FF16 3 million sales or more now seem low, but if you compare that to 15 you need to keep in mind that launched on pc and people expected more and they hyped it up after 13 was… a game…

#

16 I think will sell better than 15 just more sales later on rather than frontloaded like 15 and the pc port can be massive if done right

old marlin
#

15 launched on pc way later though

ashen spindle
#

Did it? I thought it was at the same time

old marlin
#

nope

#

no

#

it was physx flex title on launch

#

with a benchmark tool that did hairworks like 2 kilometers in the distance

#

and for clothes

ashen spindle
#

Ohh it was ps5 and Xbox right

old marlin
#

ps4

ashen spindle
#

Err yeah

cursive summit
#

hairworks
Ain't that the feature Nvidia designed to boot out all the competition cause it worked like shit on anything that isn't Nvidia?

old marlin
#

yep

#

which is funny

#

because most physx compute was not done on the gpu

#

also physx still runs like crap in a lot of titles

#

like borderlands 2 with physx imo is straight up unplayable even on modern high end hardware

#

but that game is spaghetti code hell

ashen spindle
#

Hm no pc release really puts that in perspective how hyped 15 was after 13 lol oh well I imagine 16 on pc will reverse that number haha

old marlin
#

he also makes my fps disappear

ashen spindle
#

The only thing it’s ā€žmissingā€œ is having a hit like bury the light but you don’t get that just because you want to xD

old marlin
#

so claptrap can get off of that damn elevator

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

Oh yeah it was so many years kn development hell

#

Im sure even now they already are having a better revenue since the dev time for 16 was shorter compared to that haha

old marlin
#

they better do

#

and maybe don't waste it on nfts this time

ashen spindle
#

Oh they won’t
