On linux my experience is that most things work fine, except for some third party XInput (not to be confused with xinput) controllers.
Often because they do wacky things to work with windows.
On my 8bitdo ultimate controller, when I got it the easiest way to get it to work is put it in switch mode, but that means losing the analog triggers.

What's bad isn't necessarily the controller, but that:

1. They used one of the cheaper models out there. For mission critical applications most others would spring for something more premium, at the very least for the comfort of those using it if not for extra reliability.
2. they relied on Bluetooth, a notoriously touchy wireless standard
3. They used wireless at all, when a wired solution would have been more reliable
4. Absolutely no redundancy incase the bargain bin battery powered Bluetooth controller died. No spare controller, no spare batteries, no backup wire, no control panel
5. They stuck weird nipples to it

TBH I think the biggest design fuckup on the sub is the window, followed by the hull. They didn't want to spend the money on a Window certified to go 4000 meters deep. Picking a cheaper one certified to go 1300m deep. Then with the carbon fibre hull it's practically impossible to analyse if the material is suffering fatigue defects.
