oh i see hmm i wonder

final flame
#

The thing is how many will you be able to cram in the same space as bas

#

They also have to be able to be molded in plastic shells

#

What they show looks more like a surface mount component rather than a driver

astral haven
#

`While MEMS microspeakers have many perks, there is a downside—size, or rather the lack of it. Semiconductor fabrication is geared to produce tiny chips, not massive woofers, which places a limit on how MEMS speakers can be used. While it’s technically possible to produce larger, louder speakers that combine numerous microspeakers, this tactic comes with an unappealing price tag.

“USound says, ‘Let’s do a headphone with half a dozen of these,’ or other use-cases like a smartphone speakerphone and ringtone. Then you have to use these MEMS devices like LED pixels,” says Klasco. “But, well, the cost of a wafer is the cost of a wafer. Right? And now, they’re using six times as many chips, the cost went up six times, and they’re gonna need a whole bunch of packages. So, this doesn’t really scale.”`

#

“Is it an in-ear monitor for a musician? Sure. To replace balanced armatures? Absolutely. A 6-millimeter microspeaker in an earphone? Yeah, it’s going to replace those,” says Klasco. “Right now, for true wireless stereo, that’s the killer application for this device.”

final flame
#

They do realize how difficult it is to make a array of small speakers and make it sound like one right?

astral haven
#

yea thats why they are saying it doesnt scale

#

they are saying they are on par with a 6mm dynamic

#

the n400 are 8mm

final flame
#

Mhmm

astral haven
#

the truthear are 10+7.8

#

they aint audiophile grade yet

final flame
#

While driver size doesn't matter much

#

You have 30mm driver headphones outperforming large driver planars all the time

astral haven
#

thats more at the larger end

final flame
#

The er4 from etymotic use a single ba driver

astral haven
#

ba's practically fold the required size of the moving element

My 4090 FE is a ticking timebomb, and I am all for the lawsuit

reef patrol
#

The apple response to a real issue.

#

Maybe don't design a connector that fails this often.

#

Irrelevant as I see it

#

Hasn't been an issue up until now. It's clearly a poorly designed connector.

#

I don't use molex on my 1200$ GPU. Nor have I ever seen videos about that happening from a ton of individual sources.

Also molex sucks.

#

The hooks are so prone to going loose, it's fucking sad.

#

Cool. Was it on tech international news again and again?

misty saffron
#

I don't think I ever could've unintentionally plugged in the molex connector not all the way in

#

theyre too tight of a fit

reef patrol
#

Molex's main issue was always having one of the wires pop out of the connector, causing you to need to push it in weirdly to get it back inside.

misty saffron
#

hardly an issue, you can always visually tell if it's not plugged in correctly

#

I don't know what they did with the new connector but thats too many reports of it melting

severe phoenix
#

Yeah I mean, mine is connected with no gap but then with my insane finger strength I just plugged it all the way in the way I do with all my connectors

reef patrol
misty saffron
#

oh you mean WIRES

#

I've never seen that

#

on my psus at the very least, mustve been at least 10

reef patrol
#

This happens far too often.

#

Though more often on case fans and such. So there's definitely an element of shoddy manufacturing over just poor design of the standard.

#

But offtopic to "1200$ GPU bursts into flames over poorly designed new connector standard" though.

empty wren
#

Screw molex you need a key to remove individual wires

severe phoenix
#

USB all the things

empty wren
#

Would that not be the fault of the wire insulation melting due to the thickness of the wire not being sufficient for the electrons

severe phoenix
#

No more 24 pins for Motherboard power, USB to PSU!

USB to GPU!

There is only one solution. Disregard the machine, evolve the man.

severe phoenix

I'd honestly take some chinese slave labor craftmen ship as superior

empty wren
#

But if we compare to japan

#

They will make sure everything is neat and to end

severe phoenix
#

Japan also likes to make things hard to repair

empty wren
#

Yes but they have attention to detail

severe phoenix
#

For no reason

#

Japan is like "Ok we got this perfectly usable thing here, standard worldwide..."

#

Then makes their own, complex standard for no reason that no one else uses

#

And doesn't even perform better

empty wren
#

Depends on what it is

#

Frustrated me my dad's car has a well known issue with the oil leaking into a sensor

#

Only real solution right now is replace it when it is flooded

#

Thanks Nissian

#

However other times Japan can make great stuff

#

Mitutoyo has very nice calipers for $100

#

Price aint so bad for that one but it is still expensive

#

Can get a whole spool of insulated wire for less than that.

#

I mean I guess if someone does not like slightly tedious stuff fine

#

But making a cable: removing sleeving, twisting wires, crimping and inserting contacts into the housing aint so difficult

#

Only issue maybe I guess is getting custom colors in like whatever quantity

#

Hope the fan is on the side panel side

#

Also sounds quite compact

#

Are you gonna have a tiny gpu too

#

Probably some zotac one?

#

Yep I imagined a cube or box

#

Interesting

#

What is their stuff made of

#

Like acrylic or something?

#

Yeah cast acrylic is easy to machine

#

Oh I see

#

So this a whole bundle?

#

No wonder then

#

I think I paid roughly close to that sourcing your recommendations

#

But no blocks

#

In fairness to them, water cooling seems like a lucrative business and I am guessing they earned their name or something

#

At least they post pictures I guess

#

Good for them i guess

empty wren

#

I SAWED MY CPU BLOCK IN HALF

#

Jokes aside what other materials are they made from

#

Copper, aluminium, polycarbonate?

old marlin
#

acetal

empty wren
#

Ah delrin cool

old marlin
#

and ig nickel for plating

#

aluminum less so

#

only place where you find aluminum in custom water cooling is something like the ek kits

#

since it doesn't behave well in mixed metal loops

reef patrol
old marlin
#

but yea

empty wren
#

Is okay they probably have a #💬│general channel that is polluted with people asking the same answered question

old marlin
#

acrylic imo does not belong in waterloops KEKW

#

it's just a horrible material for durability

reef patrol
#

But it's pretty. 😦

#

Wish EK would just not use it on the PORTS.

#

(Yes I realize that doesn't leave a lot of space on CPU blocks where it's most prevalent 😛 )

old marlin
#

would be hard/expensive to engineer something to not do that?

#

unless they split the top cover in half

#

into an acetal part with threads

#

and an acrylic part as a window

reef patrol
#

Yeah they'd basically need to do most of it without acryllic and have a small window to see flow or something.

old marlin
#

I mean ideally you would not see flow to begin with

reef patrol
#

wat

#

You should always be able to see a faint but obvious stream of tiny microbubbles even in a good loop.

#

Yeah that was a huge success...

empty wren

Does ek not use threaded metal inserts?

They had to replace both of my blocks and tubing when mine clogged.

Welcome to YouTube XD

wheat plume
#

COSMIC desktop looks, interesting...

#

can do this too

#

they have any layouts

thick elk
#

I personally feel like it's gonna be one of those projects that flourish for a couple of years and then wither and die

wheat plume
#

Its backed by System76

#

I doubt it will die

#

They sell hardware which will have this by default

#

People are making jokes

#

"This is the KNOME desktop we all wanted"

#

:')

#

Both the panel and dock on the left 🤔

thick elk
#

However it largely depends on how much financial resources System 76 has to support the project vs what they get out of it

wheat plume
#

System76 makes hardware and their own OS called PopOS, based on Ubuntu + Gnome desktop

#

They make their money from this hardware

#

and also sponsors and donations

thick elk
#

Unity had large backing until Canonical reprioritized.

wheat plume
#

I miss Unity desktop ;-;

#

the HUD and global menu was the best thign ever

#

the theme was shit IMO but you could change the theme to something that looked better

thick elk
#

Global menu's are nice if they actually work consistently

wheat plume
#

They work fine on Plasma
other than Firefox .-.

#

ffs Firefox, plz

thick elk
#

There is a firefox build that fixes that, but no they really do not work everwhere

wheat plume
thick elk
#

Lots of Gnarbage applications don't handle them well

wheat plume
#

Oh yeah, Gnome apps dont have menu bars at all

#

totally removed them for existence

#

They are doing a MacOS approach to the app window design

thick elk
#

I still think gnome applicatoins are a mistake, needlessly fragmentary only applicable to linux when you primarly target gnome

#

They look very out of place pretty much anywhere else

wheat plume
#

Plasma does a great job at themeing them tbh

thick elk
#

They try but that doesn't change that the way the ui works is just very much just gnome

wheat plume
#

but the widget design is out of place in plasma

#

yeah

thick elk
#

Not just plasma any operating system or desktop that is not gnome

Dear Microsoft:

frozen ingot

pale sigil
thick elk
#

Firefox is pretty bad but luckily not as bad as chrome / edge / brave / safari / whatever else I am missing

pale sigil
#

Why is brave bad

reef patrol
#

It doesn't give back Chromium features that Chrome nix for no sensible reason.

wheat plume
#

Why does GNOME insist on making an entirely new console app from scratch within GTK4 instead of upgrading gnome-terminal onto GTK4?

reef patrol
#

That you no longer can fully disable, and more recently now cannot remove the full thumbnail from either.

wheat plume
#

at least Chrome supports global menu

thick elk
#

Honestly my main reason to keep using firefox is that I am used to the control their ui provides me, addon support be it at a limited capacity on android.

  • in the last quite a lot of years no chromium based browser has given me any good reason to switch.
Breakages on google software I just see as shortcomings of google and refuse to ever make them a cause to do anything but not use them.
#

Also I want to do at least my part in preventing chromium explorer from becoming more of a thing.

#

I know we have at least safari but they don't provide the right kind of voice here

#

I wish firefox remained more open though, old addons while fragile did some great things.

frozen ingot
#

chrome/chromium is still the best browsing experience by a country mile imo

#

rather annoyingly because I don't like google

pale sigil
thick elk
#

I think my strongest argument for using firefox is that I like a certian ui layout I cannot replicate on any other browser
I also just got used to it too much over the past pretty much forever I used it

#

Something stupid like ctrl+shift+p not opening a private window bugs me

severe phoenix
#

Firefox saved me from Internet Explorer

#

How can I turn my back on it?

pale sigil
#

Easy

#

It's shit at a lot of websites

severe phoenix
#

Chrome is worse

pale sigil
#

You ain't wrong

thick elk
#

It's mostly fine imo, I have not had much issues outside of garbage google websites

pale sigil
#

But there are many chromium browsers

pale sigil
wheat plume
#

youtube testing a new layout!!!

thick elk
#

Still if you want browser extensions on android and want to sync between android and desktop are there good alternatives

pale sigil
#

And is annoying to Dev for

wheat plume
pale sigil

thick elk

Dev tools are what I got used to, actualyl mostly nicer to work with than chrome

especially for css

wheat plume
#

Since their proton update

pale sigil
#

Which was?

wheat plume
#

Jan 2021

thick elk
#

I also have not had much trouble with slow sites, only some garbage bloated webapps that really don't like it if you open them as usual in multiple tabs

#

Even discord works just fine in firefox

pale sigil
#

It's slow

wheat plume
#

its really not

pale sigil
#

Benchmarks are not great real world but they even tank on them

wheat plume
#

I just tried minecraft.net on firefox and chrome and firefox was slightly faster

pale sigil
#

I miss Firefox dearly but sweet Jesus

thick elk
#

Every time I try something chromium based I find no real noticable speedup

pale sigil
#

Again not the best use of real world but still

#

It's abysmal here too

wheat plume
#

ok

#

Tor is not faster

#

than any of those browsers

#

maybe wtf ever Puffin is though

severe phoenix
#

Firefox is the best

wheat plume
#

Firefox is mega fast now

pale sigil
#

Lana what do you define as fast

severe phoenix
ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

it loads pretty much the same time as Chrome

ashen spindle
#

latest phoronix test on linux has them close but aside from wasm chrome still is just better

#

not in 1s vs 10 second loading time obviously

severe phoenix
#

What does all this mean when my webpages load in under a second?

wheat plume
#

^

#

it cant see a different in loading times between them

ashen spindle
#

then congrats on not visting anything but pure html pages I guess?

thick elk
#

I am just saying real world I mostly have not had a lot of cases where the difference was noticable, things that ran like chrap on firefox mostly also ran like crap on chrome

wheat plume
#

youtube loads just the same on both

frozen ingot
pale sigil
#

@wheat plume tor network is slow

#

You're mixing up browser and network

thick elk
#

Tor browser is based on firefox lts I think, so it's bound to perform worse than regular firefox

severe phoenix
#

One thing that is nice about Edge and Chrome though is they can play HDR

#

never actually use it do watch HDR stuff

#

But that's nice

thick elk
#

I don't have an hdr screen (real one) and on linux it does not work either way so there is that

wheat plume
#

tbf, Chrome does match system theme really well

#

and uses global menu

pale sigil
#

But ye I miss Firefox so much

wheat plume
#

Then use it

#

its perfectly fast

severe phoenix
#

It's faster than you with a hot grill on memorial day.

thick elk
#

Any good examples of sites that perform significantly worse on firefox and are not owned by google?

wheat plume
pale sigil
#

Outside of Google? (Fuck you Google) I had issues all the time tbh

severe phoenix
#

Try it?

pale sigil
#

It depends on what the site is really

#

But Reddit for example

#

Significantly worse on Firefox

ashen spindle
#

the reason I switched to chrome back in the days was that twitch wasn't playing nice on firefox

pale sigil
#

Even now things are broke

ashen spindle
#

probably better now but no reason for me to go back really

pale sigil
#

Twitch was shit too

#

Nah twitch is still meh on Firefox

thick elk
#

Never really watched much twitch, reddit seems fine though

pale sigil
#

Seems fine till you move over, blame @spiral belfry

wheat plume
#

Reddit's images loaded faster than Firefox for me but the site wasn responsive for another second afterwards

pale sigil
#

He used to mock me for being a Firefox purist

wheat plume
#

but on Firefox, it all loaded together and was responsive sooner

pale sigil
#

But then I started devving for it and switched and couldn't go back

ashen spindle
thick elk
#

Okay I noticed the lazy loading being a bit more slugish on youtube video's indeed

#

Well I will est with adblockers on both as it's a real world test

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

still not the same comparison since they dont interact the same with the browser

thick elk
#

But yea I do notice a difference in comparison, still not that big a deal compared to the benefit.

ashen spindle

you can compare it for real usecase but comparing browser vs browser cant be done with modifications

But you can't use it.

wheat plume

ooh..

thick elk

Regardless, for me the tradeoffs in performance are definitely worth it.

severe phoenix

Just strange is all

ashen spindle
#

oh the biggest thing that phoronix also didnt test was HW accellerated video playback for vp9 at more than just 1080p or similar bitrates

severe phoenix

Holy shit it can draw up to 45w in handheld

ashen spindle

pretty sure chrome has the edge there

severe phoenix

No wonder the battery dies so fast

severe phoenix

VRR range is 48-120

ashen spindle

yeah god of war drains battery so fast on the ally compared to the steam deck /s

thick elk
#

But as for me, I stuck with firefox during their real dark period, the troubles right now are noting compared to that. I do really wish firefox renewed a focus on gaining performance parity as they are indeed falling behind in the current world of javascript frameworks optimized for chromium

wheat plume
#

The world has too many JS libraries that all do the same shit

thick elk

JS libraries exist for a good reason, it makes it take a lot less effort to develop at the cost of overhead.

frozen ingot

firefox had a good run, it was excellent in the 2000s

thick elk
#

I do certainly hope they can narrow the real world performance gap as with that fixed it looks a lot more appealing across the board

spiral belfry
#

It's probably ok for the generic internet, but when you do anything more than look at Facebook, it sucks 😅

thick elk

It works fine for most sites I use, facebook is probably a bad example here

spiral belfry

Is there any good chromium based browser that synchronized with a browser with addon support on android?

I would end up using IE before using Firefox tbh 😂

As for where IE would be an improvement, if outlook switched back to IE as a rendering engine that would be a huge improvement

Haha tbh I have no desire to make a landing page

#

What's shocking is Edge is actually really nice

spiral belfry
#

Oh I use edge exclusively now 😅 works better than chrome, which going back to teenage me would hate me

thick elk
#

For me it really boils down to a few factors, and weighing them somewhat neutrally I still stick to firefox:

Most of my browsing of sites in on ones that perform great even on firefox. This may be because it’s mostly simpler news like site instead of the reddit front page.
I do not want to live without userscripts on android and want to sync between my phone and desktop.
I really like my ui layout on Firefox, which is not something I can get comparable on chrome.
I got used to Firefox and it’s keybindings are quite engrained so it would take some effort to switch to something else.
On the chrome side yes there is a substantial performance uplift on certain sides but those are mostly not sides I regularly use.
Some extra features may be developed for just chrome but the number seems mostly insignificant.

Subjectively there is the matter of me wanting to help prevent a browser engine monopoly (or duopoly with safari).

#

As for using Edge, there is no real harm, it offers a quick path to migrate away from it if things go south, I personally would refuse to use it on Windows though out of principle.

boreal horizon

New cars are mostly leased/sold to companies

fickle ore

Business leasing often comes with insane discounts + tax deductions

ashen spindle
