still loom
#

It's just a better version

astral haven
#

thats why its got a new number lel

still loom
#

It's a 5nm chip

#

It's just named 4N

astral haven
#

its not a 5nm chip

still loom
#

It 100% is

astral haven
#

nope

ashen spindle
#

why do you think all the leaks had n31 so much higher in performance, because they also eventuall got that info and just didn't know that something was fucked up in the mass production

still loom
#

Do you research my friend

astral haven
#

its produced with a 5nm class node

still loom
#

A 4090 chip is 5nm

astral haven
#

it can be at best called 34nm generously

#

the process node that made it is based on 5nm

#

but that again is irrelevant

#

the nm numbers are a marketing excercise

#

a lower number means an improvement on a higher number and thats it

#

so its whatever tsmc says it is

ashen spindle
#

you two can argue that point, I cba xD
fact is the only way nvidia knew the real world performance of the 7900xtx in time to change the name for their cards and get it all sorted out, is if they have an inside mad literally giving them day1 info on it

#

which would explode into insane consequences if that ever came up and isn't even worth it lol

astral haven
#

except it wouldnt even be day 1 bc the 4080 timeline started along time earlier than 7000 series did

#

day like -100

ashen spindle
#

I'm being generous since I dont remember those dates just roughly when amd would've had the info and where that would place them

astral haven
#

point is it would have had to be insider info from real high up to be in time for nvidia

still loom
#

No one knows the actual performance of the card until close to the announcement

#

But specs are leaked

#

Between both companies

ashen spindle
#

ok, the issue is with the info you say they should know, they would expect the 7900xtx to be on par or beating the 4090

astral haven
#

^^^

still loom
#

No

ashen spindle
#

because on specs and infos that should be the case

#

yes

still loom
#

They didn't even try

ashen spindle
#

???

still loom
#

The made a tiny card with low power consumption

astral haven
#

they literally tried extremely hard

still loom
#

They didn't, they have more coming

astral haven
#

what

ashen spindle
#

huh

astral haven
#

its the largest card radeon has ever made

#

and it only has 1 chip...

ashen spindle
#

N32/33 are coming but those are lower tier cards lol

still loom
#

Yes but they are delivering price to performance, knowing they can't beat pure performance

astral haven
#

yes and they figured out that they had to do that literally within days of launch

#

marketing execs were told it would be alot better than it was

#

even amd doesnt make a mistake that bad unless it was only found out too late to correct...

still loom
#

I mean it's commendable that you think AMD think they can beat Nvidia on pure performance

#

They know they are behind

#

They aren't stupid

astral haven
#

you really havent followed tech for very long lmao

#

amd is very confidently wrong often

still loom
#

What's that got to do with them making the most powerful chips?

#

How many times has that happened?

#

It's their first chiplet design

#

And you think they thought it would be the most powerful?

ashen spindle
#

the cards can be clocked to above 3.5gz shader clocks on air cooler and it scales, the issue is you dont get those clocks in games but in blender or something, it was supposed to scale like that in games but something got fucked up

#

the chiplet part is not the reason why it failed

still loom
#

It's not, but it's also not the reason they would all of a sudden be the strongest

#

It takes time

astral haven
#

every single officially announced at an event gpu since polaris was thought to be faster than it ended up according to amd engineers

#

i mean consumer side

still loom
#

Idk why we are arguing about AMD anyway, they are useless πŸ˜‚

ashen spindle
#

well there is a chance they can fix it with a respin and we get rdna3 beating 4090 this year

astral haven
#

because nvidia prices their cards what they think will be competitively...

still loom
#

Maybe one day their drivers will add 20-30% to the 7900s... in like 3 years πŸ˜‚

astral haven
still loom
#

400 more than AMDs

#

Then they decided to increase it

astral haven
#

yet it sold consistently over 2k for the entire cycle

still loom
#

Yeah, but this time around mining is dead

#

But they still raised prices

astral haven
#

and at launch it was 1k more than amds closest competitor

still loom
#

They know what they're doing πŸ˜…

astral haven
#

you overestimate nvidias 5d chess

still loom
#

They own the majority market share and offer the overall better product so they know they can charge more

#

They basically own the entire laptop scene

#

When people think of AMD they think price to performance, and Nvidia knows that

#

Nvidia doesn't care about price to performance, they never did

astral haven
#

thats uh
verifiably untrue

still loom
#

They will put it just about close to a reasonable price

#

But always higher

#

To make more margin

ashen spindle
#

didn't you start out by saying nvidia based it on what they knew amd's performance will be?

astral haven
still loom
#

So they knew the could price the 4090 out of any competition

still loom
#

Not to the moon, but in general comparable they are usually $100-200 higher

still loom
#

As you well know, watching an AMD launch

ashen spindle
#

the specs nvidia knew from leaks in whatever form were wrong since amd themselves "knew" of different specs

astral haven
#

and amd didnt discover that bug until way too late to do anything about it

still loom
#

Where are we going with this anyway? Are you saying Nvidia don't overprice their cards by at least 100-200$ every gen?

astral haven
#

overprice is an opinion

ashen spindle
#

we were saying that nvidia did not price it based on amds performance, because they did not know it based the pre release specs

still loom
#

I buy Nvidia always, I'm fine with it

#

But AMD users will say different

astral haven
#

but i can assure you that the 1080ti and 3080 reference cards were not overpriced

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

you said nvidia knew ahead of time what amds performance is and thus made the 4080/4090 different tiers then before, and they just didnt knew the actual specs in time for that

still loom
#

I said they knew about specs

#

They always do

#

Just like Intel and AMD do with eachother

#

Nvidia and AMD do aswell

#

Always

#

It will never not happen

astral haven
#

but the specs were wrong

still loom
#

So?

ashen spindle
#

they knew specs yes, but not the specs that the cards launched with at all

#

the specs they knew would make the cards like 20-40% better or so

still loom
#

You're telling me the specs were wrong until the launch date, even by all the engineers at AMD's labs

#

They had no idea what their own specs were through the entire development process

ashen spindle
#

not until launch date but very close to it yes

astral haven
still loom
#

Ok we are done here, have a good night xD

ashen spindle
#

the issue they ran into is related to making the die, either on mask or etching label or something

astral haven
#

do you not remember the 3ghz snafoo?

ashen spindle
#

you cant find that in pre silicon validation

#

and a respin to fix an issue at that stage takes 6+ months

#

this isn't some amd fanboy coping because if they cant deliver it, it doesnt matter and I wont buy something because of the potential it had

#

but that's how it happened

astral haven
#

well I will lel
but only if it fails so hard it doesnt even leave the es stage lmao

ashen spindle
#

ok sure xD

astral haven
#

πŸ˜›

ashen spindle
#

but based on early specs this would've been the second run of uhh, what gen was it where radeon heavily beat nvidia till their refresh, was it the 5870?

#

with like half the die size so nvidia had to cut prices

#

dont remember which gen that was

astral haven
#

far as i remember, the only dx9 or later card where amd had an outright advantage was the 290x

#

but the 480 was a giigaaaantic die compared to the 5870 and used alot of power

ashen spindle
#

@highyieldYT @mooreslawisdead @Gordonung TSMC said that hybrid bonding is N7 on N7 and N5 on N5. I asked about N7 on N5 and they didn't outright say yes or no, which makes me think noone has asked for it. They confirmed future nodes will allow N5 on N3, or N5 on N2, or N3 on N2, or N3 on N5 etc.

vagrant pagoda
#

@astral haven it's true. That's why TR can OC and TR Pro can't.

astral haven
#

but tr pro can oc

#

its only multiplier locked

#

the 5990wx can use north of 600w easily, and it can clock higher than stock with a bit of bclk tweaking

vagrant pagoda
#

You can do that with epyc in some boards too

astral haven
#

yep

old marlin
astral haven
ashen spindle
#

well if you make a lot of stuff a lot of failures will naturally come out

astral haven
#

^

old marlin
astral haven
#

intel is just one of the companies that is least secretive about their indev products

old marlin
#

none of their X86 replacements did

#

phi didn't

ashen spindle
#

well it kinda did stick around aside from itanium

astral haven
#

phi was x86

old marlin
#

itanium afaik still costs them money

astral haven
#

and phi went on to start atom

old marlin
#

iapx failed HARD

ashen spindle
#

and itanium and phi helped them lots to make arc from what raja said

old marlin
#

how did itanium help make arc

#

I doubt arc will ever make them back what they paid for itanium

astral haven
#

itanium was extremely fast

#

itanium was intels first risc design

#

and basically every new architecture since was risc

#

including arc

ashen spindle
#

idk whatever they learned making it was applicable, no clue if that means physically or logically fir their designs

vagrant pagoda
#

Just never relased

astral haven
#

5990x == 5990wx

vagrant pagoda
#

No

#

5990x is quad channel

astral haven
#

and it was using an 8 channel iodie

#

just fused down

old marlin
#

after iAPX they made the i960

astral haven
#

ok it was their first high performance risc design

old marlin
#

which was risc

#

it was also high performance at the time

vagrant pagoda
#

Iodie is irrelevant it's how it's packaged. Tr has always had more power and ground pins

astral haven
#

[citation needed]

old marlin
#

larabee was a big failure

#

optane was as well

astral haven
#

larabee was cancelled before it could do anything

vagrant pagoda
#

It's literally why it has less memory and pice lanes

astral haven
#

optane was a complete success, however it wasnt intel's

old marlin
#

is optane still a thing?

astral haven
astral haven
vagrant pagoda
#

Wut

astral haven
#

the problem is that intel didnt own the factory

old marlin
#

so it also failed

astral haven
#

define failed

vagrant pagoda
#

Tr and TR Pro have the same number of lanes to the chipset

old marlin
#

it underperformed hard

#

profit wise

#

underperforming in a technical sense was prob only iAPX

astral haven
astral haven
old marlin
astral haven
#

the factory was sold off and repurposed before they could turn a profit

vagrant pagoda
#

They are power

astral haven
#

no ion

#

threadripper has about 700 NC pins

vagrant pagoda
#

If you stick a epyc in a tr board it kills it

astral haven
#

NC = no connection

old marlin
#

OHNONO

astral haven
#

some of those data pins ended up over old supply pins

astral haven
# old marlin OHNONO

yea itanium was completely useless because of how terrible the risc compilers were

old marlin
#

like twice

#

still not as bad as iAPX

#

but still bad

astral haven
#

itanium was their first risc processor
and the mistake was making the compiler do the heavy lifting of the parallelization while putting little to no effort into the compiler

vagrant pagoda
old marlin
#

also

#

not their first risc processor

#

i960 predates it by like a decade

#

and was still in production when itanium came out

astral haven
#

iapx was not risc

old marlin
#

i960 was risc

#

and iAPX had the same stupid problems with compiler problems

astral haven
#

i960 however used a risc instruction set

#

itanium thought they could fix the risc issues by making a vliw instruction set on top of a risc processor

#

but it just made things worse

#

but again tho itanium was fast asf

#

if you had something that could use it it was the fastest cpu available and it wasnt even that close

#

but it was too much work to switch over

#

intel learned their lesson from that

#

thats why they spend so much on actually developing other peoples software these days

#

arc is vliw risc like all the other gpus afaik

#

like itanium was supposed to compete with power cpus
and ibm had a massive installbase and was not sitting still in the slightest

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

lmao what

#

they have a monopoly on mainframes and quantum computers
both require software, but the main part is the whole having a mainframe/quantum computer...

vagrant pagoda
#

IBM sells mainframes as packages with software solutions

astral haven
#

well no shit

#

but the whole key part is that they are the only company making the hardware too...

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah but starting with the system/360 Ibm started pushing the complete stack as a sale

astral haven
#

🀷

vagrant pagoda
#

Which is why the 360 was the first computer with comparability between models

astral haven
#

ibm is a hardware tech leader

#

they are not a software company first

vagrant pagoda
#

You could start on a little baby 360 and then upgrade to one of the massive building size ones

It was the environmental conditions, if I drop my cards in water it doesn't matter if it was previously running simulations or games....modern "news" irks me too much these days

well a normal person would not store >40 cards in unhealthy condition and then sell them

it wasnt mining directly but still only because they were used for mining

Anyone wise in the ways of monitors? Looks like I'll finally get a refund from Lenovo for my buggy monitor. And I've been looking around for a replacement - But it feels like there's a big leap from the budget range I'm in to anything with more features.

https://eu.aoc.com/en/gaming/products/monitors/cu34g2x-bk
https://deals.dell.com/en-us/productdetail/fu8e

These are the two that are basically identical in both features and price (450€ ish), but if I want anything more like say... actual HDR or Gsync (whether official or "technically works but it's AMD) and we're right up in the expensive Alienware/Dell super monitors at almost twice the price immediately.

ashen spindle
#

Buy better internet connection

wheat plume

Download speed doesn't depend on how powerful your computer is xd
Unless it's a large download like a game or large video
Then the speed of your storage can limit how fast you can download it

#

bruhhhh

#

im downloading like 100gb of a game and i wanna play it today

1.7mb a second dawg

I know

because?

wheat plume

TWM have been around for decades in Linux but never had animations for when you open and close and move windows around

those were just inherited from the fact it was running a full desktop underneath it

well, AMD GPU drivers are built into the kernel, so that probably doesnt have much impact on boot speeds either for those dGPUs

thats not how that works

wheat plume

Nvidia GPU drivers need to load kernel mods and shit
