Basically, large companies probably do not get to make good merch.
It's either go to a trusted supplier who handles it.
They really would not incentivize one or a couple of people doing hard work researching, testing and maintaining quality.
Bureaucracy will just get in the way on a large organization, and the incentives are low.
Outsourcing it mostly to a larger merch making company is generally the road to take.
Same with gaming chairs which as much as we dislike them are still popular in general.

We coat our PCBs with a layer of... something to prevent shorts from spills. If you want to solder on the board, you need to get the coating off again. So... not uncommon at all. 🙂
