also you do some weird changing variables around which reads a tiny bit clunky. i put 2 comments into the convert_to_standard function that show a tiny bit better solution for a quick switch as it just uses self reference
oh and in one func you called convert_to_standard without storing the return value or using it so its an unecessary call to the func
